2023-2024 Houston County Guide

Welcome to Houston Co. Welcome to Houston County, Minnesota!

H

ouston County is located in the southeastern corner of Minnesota. It is bordered on the east by the Mississippi River, Winona County to the north, Fillmore County to the west and Allamakee County, Iowa to the south. It is about 24 miles from north to south and nearly that from east to west, divided into 17 townships. The county’s location made it a natural entry point into Minnesota when settlers were moving west. The opening of the land office in Brownsville in 1854 handled the early land claims in the county. Houston County is in the Driftless area, which is the small area of the Midwest that escaped glaciation in the last glacial period. Deeply carved valleys, limestone bluffs and hardwood woodlands are characteristics of the beautiful topography. The natural springs and trout streams, the Root River and abundant wildlife make this a destination for hunting, fishing, camping and snowmobiling. Beaver Creek Valley State Park is located 3 ½ miles northwest of Caledonia. Agriculture is one of the largest industries with good farmland soils of windblown loess. The communities found in the county are Brownsville, Caledonia (the county seat), Eitzen, Freeburg, Hokah, Houston, La Crescent, Money Creek, Sheldon and Spring Grove.

The Eitzen Lions host the annual Eitzen Family 4th of July Fun Fest, which causes the population to swell to about 5,000 people during the three-day celebration.

HOKAH

Hokah is one of the most unique communities in southeastern Minnesota. Originally a Native American village, it is named after their leader, Chief Wecheschatope Hokah. It is located between Thompson Creek Bluff and the Root River and has become an ideal recreation spot. The area is known for excellent recreation, hunting and fishing. Visitors can take a ride down the Root River in a canoe or tube and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The community also features a “sand bottom” community pool. Hokah boasts four city parks, and a scenic walkway in which to enjoy Como Falls.

HOUSTON

The city of Houston is located in the beautiful Root River valley of Southeastern Minnesota. Houston is a unique combination of a charming, small-town feel and modern conveniences. The city has an excellent school system and a variety of locally-owned businesses. Whether you like to bike, hike, hunt, bird or nature watch, Houston is an ideal setting for outdoor enthusiasts year-round. We are the eastern terminus of the Root River Bike Trail System, and our Trailhead Park features a Nature Center, natural playground, primitive camping and much more. The city is also home to the International Owl Center, featuring Great Horned Owls and more. Houston is home to South Park, featuring a new public archery range and boasts two new public ball fields at multipurpose Bluffview Community Park. Volunteers in the community host a variety of special events

throughout the year, including the International Festival of Owls, Root River Triathlon, Houston Hoedown, Taste of the Trail, a fall arts festival, and the Houston Hollidazzle.

LA CRESCENT

La Crescent was founded in 1851 by Peter Cameron and was originally called, “Camerons.” Peter and his wife, Emma, were two of the town’s most colorful characters. Peter tried to dig a canal to change the flow of the Mississippi River so it would flow closer to La Crescent and bypass La Crosse, Wisconsin, across the river. He died 10 weeks before its scheduled completion in 1857. The canal was never finished, although it can still be seen in aerial photographs of the city. John S. Harris arrived in La Crescent in 1856 and soon gave the town its identity as the “Apple Capital of Minnesota,” a title that the city copyrighted in 2002. Despite the belief ‘by 99 out of 100’ people that apples could not grow in Minnesota,” Harris planted his first apple trees here in 1857 and experimented with them until he grew trees hardy enough to withstand the severe Minnesota winters. He planted thousands of apple trees and hundreds of varieties, a full half of which he said were complete and total failures. Harris became known as “Father of the Orchardists” in Minnesota and was also a founding member of the Minnesota State Horticultural Society. Since 1947, La Crescent has celebrated this apple heritage annually with a weekend festival known as Applefest. Boasting over ten parks in or near city limits, La Crescent also enjoys an aquatic center, community arena and lively business district.

SPRING GROVE

Nestled in the southeastern corner of Minnesota’s bluff country is the historic small town of Spring Grove, a city surrounded by rolling fields and breathtaking views. Spring Grove is home to the area’s best outdoor recreation: hunting, camping, snowmobiling and endless possibilities for the active family. With four city parks, Spring Grove has plenty of green space and new playgrounds. Spring Grove is truly a place that you want to call home. A family friendly town with a 5-star rated K-12 school, an exciting family swim center, multiple shops and restaurants and a digital movie theater with stadium seating. Visual and performing arts are loved and nurtured through theater, music and art programs. Learning and enrichment opportunities are provided through the school, Ye Olde Opera House, Giants of the Earth Heritage Center and Bluff Country Artists Gallery. A unique blend of talent and togetherness make Spring Grove truly “pretty. neat. small town.” 

T

The Heart of Quilt Country

he area is known for its rich barn quilt tradition. Barn quilts are painted quilt squares, usually fashioned on boards and then mounted on a barn or other building. While cloth quilts are usually made up of a series of squares of the same pattern placed together, a barn quilt is almost always a single square.

‘Quilting the Countryside,’ began as a creative barn improvement project for a local family highlighting their 1928 barn. An 8x8 foot square of plywood was painted in lively colors in a traditional quilt pattern and hung on their rural barn. The idea quickly caught on and over fifty beautifully painted wooden quilts now grace rural barns throughout Houston County celebrating our valued agricultural heritage. The pattern for a particular barn quilt may be chosen for a myriad of reasons. Often the barn quilt is a replica of a painted quilt that resides on the property or honors a loved one. A pattern may be selected because of its name; Corn and Beans is popular among farmers.

Sometimes, the barn quilt is simply one whose pattern is appealing to either its creators or its owners. A map and more information can be found on page 11. 

Beaver Creek Valley State Park

L

ocated just outside of Caledonia, Beaver Creek Valley State Park is a treasured gem. Nestled in the blufflands of southeastern Minnesota, Beaver Creek Valley State Park is known for its clear streams fed by the “Big Spring.” Its streams are home to brown and native brook trout. In spring, wildflowers that blanket the woodland hills and valleys attract migratory songbirds like the rare Acadian flycatcher, Cerulean warbler and Louisiana waterthrush. These birds nest in the park. A hiking trail meanders along the stream and up into a maple, basswood and oak forest. Campers are lulled to sleep by the murmuring stream.

WILDLIFE

The great diversity of plant species contribute to a great diversity of wildlife. Deer, raccoon, muskrat, mink, badger, red and gray fox, an occasional beaver and wild turkey may be spotted in the park. Another interesting animal that resides in the park is the timber rattlesnake, which is seldom seen. If you encounter one, please leave it alone; they present little threat to the visitor. Birdwatchers flock to the park to see the treasured Acadian flycatcher and the Louisiana waterthrush.

LANDSCAPE

Beaver Creek Valley State Park is in the Blufflands Landscape Region. It is a nature lover’s paradise because of the diversity of natural communities. Bottomland hardwoods such as black ash, willow, box elder, cottonwood and elm grow in the valley while a mix of maple, walnut, basswood and oak thrive above the valley. Small patches of native prairie and oak savanna occupy some of the south and west-facing slopes in the park.

12

HISTORY

Historically, the area attracted European settlers because of rich agricultural soils, hardwoods and the many streams that made milling possible. Archaeological surveys indicate that the valley was once an Indian village site.

GEOLOGY

The park is situated in one of the most interesting geologic areas in Minnesota, the “driftless area.” The area covers 10,000 square miles in adjoining parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois, which were untouched by the most recent glacial advances. However, as the glaciers receded, torrents of meltwater poured into streams and rivers, carving deep rugged valleys. These rocky walls are made up of a layer of sandstone sandwiched between two layers of dolomite, which were deposited by inland seas between 450 and 500 million years ago. 

Welcome To Houston

elcome to Houston. We’re growers, creators, innovators, educators and a whole lot more. We work hard, but enjoy rural valley life in our little corner of the driftless in Southeast Minnesota. Most of all, we’re proud of our community and invite you to share it with us.

A

Visit, live or dream of scenic bluff country, have a hoot at the International Owl Center, explore our parks and trails, experience local events and businesses or just plain have a good time. Find us on the Root River Bike Trail or on the Root River itself. Houston offers a number of outdoor fun including several parks, outdoor events like the Root River Triathlon and Houston Hoedown. See www.houstonmnchamber.com for more info. 

Visit the International Owl Center

three-week old owlet fell out of her rickety nest high in a mature pine tree in the city of Antigo, Wisconsin one fine spring day in 1997, forever changing the way the world looks at owls. She was cared for at the Raptor Education Group, Inc. in Antigo, but the injury to her left elbow was too severe for her to ever fly and live in the wild. So she got a job as an education bird working at the Houston Nature Center through a string of serendipitous events. As Alice’s popularity grew, naturalist Karla Bloem thought it might be fun to throw a “hatch-day” party to celebrate the day she hatched in early March. With live owl programs and a few kids activities, the International Festival of Owls had its humble beginnings. Alice has made her mark on the world in numerous ways. Besides touching the lives of tens of thousands of people in educational programs, Alice also provided the impetus for removing Great Horned Owls from Minnesota’s unprotected birds list (Alice now holds Special Permit #1 to recognize her work on this issue). She also prompted Bloem to begin a vocal study on Great Horned Owls,

which had never been done before. And of course without Alice, there would be no International Festival of Owls and no World Owl Hall of Fame. Today the International Owl Center houses seven educational owls, five of which still come to work and two of whom are retired: Alice, Iris and Ruby (all Great Horned Owls), Uhu the Eurasian Eagle Owl, Piper the American Barn Owl, JR the Eastern Screech Owl and the center’s newest edition, Bea the Burrowing Owl. The International Owl Center is located in Houston. See their website at www.internationalowlcenter.org or Facebook page for current hours and admission.  2023-2024 Houston County Guide

Welcome To Hokah

H

okah, Minnesota is a small town of about 600 located where Minnesota State Highway 44 meets the Historic Bluff Country National Scenic Byway on Minnesota Highway 16. The city was founded in 1851 and is named after a local Native American chief, Wecheschatope Hokah. The word “hokah” itself means “root,” much like the Root River that flows through at the foot of scenic bluffs of the Driftless Area. The river provides opportunities for canoes, kayaks, and fishing but Hokah’s main attraction is the beautiful Como Falls, the site of countless weddings, get-togethers, and happy memories. Beyond the falls lies the truly unique Hokah Pool, a spring-fed, sand-bottom

C

pool with no chemicals for an experience unlike any other. Out of the water, Hokah boasts four parks, horseshoe courts, and a ball diamond with a temptingly-short right-field porch. As you head out of town, either up the ridge, or down the river, or further down a trip on the Scenic Byway, you’ll understand why the proud folks of Hokah live by the words “Hokah Forever.” 

Visit Como Falls in Hokah

omo Falls is located within a municipal park in Hokah, at the east end of Falls Street. It is a short but picturesque waterfall on Thompson Creek, just before the creek meets the Root River. Ed Thompson first dammed up the creek named for him in the early 1850s to use the waterpower for corn and saw mills. A side

effect was the creation of Lake Como, which became a popular resort area. Como Falls Park is located behind the Fire Station in Hokah, and is accessible either from there (9 Mill St.) or from the municipal pool (20 Como St.). From the back of either parking lot, just follow the crushed stone trail. 

Welcome To La Crescent

ocated in the southeast corner of Minnesota, La Crescent is nestled between the Mississippi River and the picturesque bluffs. John S. Harris arrived in La Crescent in 1856 and soon gave the town its identity of “Apple Capital of Minnesota,” a title that the city copyrighted in 2002. Despite the belief “by 99 out of 100” people that apples could not grow in Minnesota,” Harris planted his first apple trees here in 1857 and experimented with them until he grew trees hardy enough to withstand the severe Minnesota winters. Since 1947 La Crescent has celebrated this apple heritage annually with a weekend festival known as Applefest. La Crescent has entertained a number of businesses throughout its history, but the one that has endured the longest is the apple industry. Around the 1940’s La Crescent had about 40 small orchards in and around the city. Although the number of orchards has dwindled to less than a dozen, the acreage is about the same, as the orchards have been expanded in the bluffs farther away from the city. La Crescent grows gourmet apple varieties not found in most other places. About 80% of its apples are sold in Minnesota, although they are also exported to surrounding states and Canada. Meanwhile, people continue to flock to the beauty of La Crescent. Visit https:// www.cityoflacrescent-mn.gov.
