EDUCATION

Gustavus Adolphus College

Gustavus Adolphus College, founded in 1862 and formally located in St. Peter in 1876, plays a key educational and employment role in the St. Peter and Minnesota River Valley region. The college, on the western bluffs of St. Peter, has rebounded and rebuilt in spectacular fashion since the 1998 tornado which hit the St. Peter community.

The four-year liberal arts college, under the leadership of President Rebecca Bergman and the Board of Trustees, has been growing and building. Capital improvements continue to broaden the college’s campus footprint and opportunities.

Gustavus is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and has an enrollment of over 2,000. The college employs over 700 people.

Students can earn bachelors of arts degrees in 72 majors in 24 academic departments and three interdisciplinary programs. The college offers a wide variety of student opportunities to complement its educational offerings. There are more than 110 recognized student groups and organizations, including about a dozen studentrun religious organizations. The college campus boasts over 20 academic and service facilities, as well as more than a dozen residence halls and apartment or townhouse complexes. Up to 90 percent of Gustavus’ students typically reside on campus.

The Gusties are members of the Minnesota

Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC), affiliated with the NCAA Division III. The college offers 23 varsity athletic programs for its students. Also, some 80 percent of students participate in the 30 intramural athletic offerings and nine club sports.

Gustavus’ athletic facilities host many student and regional events throughout the year. The Lund Center for Physical Education and Health has been named one of the finest small college sports complexes in the U.S. The facility involves nearly 85 percent of the student body with its varsity, intramural and personal fitness programs. The Swanson Tennis Center, a domed indoor tennis facility, offers memberships for juniors, adults and families.

The beautiful 340-acre campus also includes the 135-acre Linnaeus Arboretum.

Students also participate in many fine arts and music programs. The Hillstrom Museum of Art and the Schaefer Fine Arts Center, which includes the Kresge Dace Studio and Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall, are popular among students and the public. And the Bonnier Multifaith Center provides spiritual opportunities for all.

Study abroad opportunities in more than 40 international sites are available for Gustavus students, and 50% of students have studied abroad. Students have access to the award winning student dining options from the C. Charles Jackson Campus Center. Also, Gustavus students are active in pursuing internships, with

over 60% doing so, most in specialized service learning environments.

A Gustavus landmark, Christ Chapel, plays host to cultural events throughout the year – many of which are open to the public – including the popular Christmas in Christ Chapel, which rings in the holiday season each December.

Among the many annual conferences and seminars hosted by Gustavus is the fall Nobel Conference, an annual event that began in 1965. The conference typically attracts some 5,000 people each year, including students and educators from high schools and colleges throughout the nation.

The topic of the 61st annual conference (2025) is Sugar: Bringing Sweetness to Light.

St. Peter Public Schools

St. Peter Public Schools moved into its $55 million state-of-the-art high school on the city’s west side in fall 2017. Improvements also were made throughout the district’s facilities and has helped transform the district’s curriculum and learning opportunities.

The capital improvements and reconfigurations of buildings and curriculum

reinforce the district’s “Learning Matters” message. And District 508 encourages its faculty and employees to be lifelong learners.

The district encompasses St. Peter, Kasota and portions of southwestern Le Sueur County, along with sections of eastern Nicollet County. It has several sites: St. Peter High School for grades 9-12 at 2121 Broadway Ave.; the St. Peter Middle School for grades 5-8 at 100 Lincoln Dr.; North Elementary School for grades 2-4 at 815 N. HISTORY

St. Peter’s rich history grew from a settlement originally called Rock Bend in the early 1850s. The community is one of the oldest cities in Minnesota, and it serves as the county seat of Nicollet County.

The Dakota Indians were the first to live in the area, settling along the Minnesota River and utilizing a natural ford, which came to be known as Traverse des Sioux. In 1851, an historic treaty was signed on this site by the Dakota Indians and the United States government, ceding 24 million acres of land to the federal government. The Nicollet County Historical Society offers troves of information on this event.

St. Peter is said to be founded by Captain William D. Dodd in 1853. The current name was provided by members of the St. Peter Co., based in St. Paul. Willis Gorman, the second territorial governor of Minnesota, was a member.

A plan to make St. Peter the state capital in 1857 very nearly succeeded. But state lore claims an original bill to make St. Peter the capitol disappeared until after the legislative session, halting efforts to replace St. Paul.

As the community grew over the years, it absorbed the community of Traverse des Sioux to the north.

When the Civil War began in 1861, St. Peter provided soldiers for many military units. One of the community’s founders, Capt. Asgrim K. Skaro, was killed during the Battle of Nashville in December 1864 while leading his company. Others participated in the Dakota War that began in 1862.

St. Peter provided four other men who served in military units at various times and also served as Minnesota governor. Henry A. Swift was in a local militia and Horace Austin served in a Minnesota unit in the Dakota War. Andrew R. McGill served in the Civil War. John A. Johnson served in the Minnesota

National Guard.

The first state hospital in Minnesota began in St. Peter in 1866, initially using a large building downtown until the first building on the current site was completed. Today, the facility is known as the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center and employs about 1,400 people.

Gustavus Adolphus College came to the community in the 1870s. Its Swedish roots helped it work with the Nobel Foundation to establish an annual Nobel Conference that brings outstanding scientists and thousands of visitors to the campus.

With very few exceptions, St. Peter has been the home of the Nicollet County Fair since the mid-1800s. The site also hosts car shows, dog shows, rodeos and other events.

St. Peter has rebuilt after several disasters. The community experienced a large fire in 1887 that destroyed a considerable portion of its business district. A tornado in 1924 destroyed or damaged several buildings. The Minnesota River has also flooded frequently, with especially severe floods in 1881, 1951 and 1965.

And in 2023, the community observed and celebrated its rebuilding with the 25th anniversary of the 1998 tornado, which tore through the heart of St. Peter, as well as the community of Comfrey and Le Center. One life was lost. Hundreds of structures were affected; many could not be repaired. Thousands of trees were also uprooted and destroyed.

St. Peter has recovered and is in better shape than ever. Today, the community is proud of how it reshaped itself, hitting the reset button in some ways and taking full advantage of the challenge and opportunity that was presented. The city’s rebuild has served as a model for others, and city officials have often been called on to assist with response to other disasters.

AGRICULTURE

St. Peter’s economic roots run deep in diverse ways, but few businesses are as closely tied to its history as the agricultural community. Nicollet County’s rich farmland places itself among Minnesota’s top crop- and livestockproducing regions.

Nicollet County agricultural land totals over 275,000 acres, with 660 farms, according to the most recent (2022) Minnesota Census of Agriculture. While St. Peter and North Mankato, on the county’s east side, dominate population, the central and western regions of Nicollet County -- near and around the communities of Nicollet, Lafayette, Courtland and Norseland -- are rich in farmland.

The most recent statistics show the county ranks in the top quarter statewide in total agricultural production, including top 10 in highest bushel per acre corn production in the state, according to a 2023 USDA report.

According to the Minnesota Census of

Agriculture, the market value of products sold in a year in Nicollet County from agricultural operations is just short of $600 million, with net income after expenses at about $171 million. These numbers represent increases from the previous 2017 census.

A large portion of Nicollet County’s agricultural business is in the livestock sector, frequently ranking among the top pork producers in the industry. The county ranks sixth in the state in market value for the sales of hogs and pigs, 10th in milk from cows, and 12th in poultry and eggs, according to the census.

Nicollet County agriculture is part of the state’s significant presence in the United States markets, with over $21 billion total, according to the department. Minnesota is the fourth largest agricultural exporting state in the U.S., topping $7 billion, accounting for one-third of the state’s total export market.

HEALTH CARE

River’s Edge Hospital and Clinic continues to serve the local community and recently put the finishing touches on a $33.8 million renovation and expansion.

Former CEO George Rohrich called 2017 “maybe the hospital’s best year ever” in recapping the finances. Rohrich retired at the end of 2019.

The newest CEO, Paula Meskan, was promoted from within in early 2021. She began her tenure at the top in March 2021. She worked with her other administrators to push the hospital through the tough years of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the future looking even brighter now on the other side.

The addition and renovation to River’s Edge added eight patient rooms and two operating rooms and moved the entrance from Dodd Road to an eastern facing one on North Sunrise Drive. Officials hope the hospital will be able to accommodate more surgeries, more specialties and have rooms for emergency room admittances and swing beds. The hospital is currently licensed for up to 25 beds.

The hospital had posted a strong cash positive year in 2015 and has ever since. That’s due, in part, to an ongoing partnership with Mankato’s Orthopedic and Fracture Clinic. The hospital is the site for hip, knee and shoulder replacements. Spine surgeries have also started there.

The city-owned facility is a Level IV Trauma Center, providing emergency room physicians, nurses, paramedics and technicians 24 hours a day, and has also expanded its Urgent Care services. River’s Edge Hospital also provides emergency ambulance services to the greater St. Peter area. Funding is provided in part by the River’s Edge Hospital Foundation.

For more information, see riversedgehealth.org.

The River’s Edge campus, on St. Peter’s northwest side, also includes the Mayo Clinic Health System in St. Peter, which offers services on the west wing of the facility. More at mayoclinichealthsystem.org.

Mankato Clinic’s Daniels Health Center, at 1901 North Old Minnesota Ave., is named in honor of one of St. Peter’s first physicians, Asa Wilder Daniels. More information at mankatoclinic.com.

The River Valley Birth Center of St. Peter, at 526 W. Park Row, opened in May 2014, but began offering midwife services in 2009. More information at rivervalleybirthcenter.com.

Long-term care

St. Peter is also home to several longterm care facilities, ranging from senior living apartments to memory care accommodations.

There’s Heritage Meadows Senior Living; the Benedictine Living Community of St. Peter; Ecumen St. Peter’s two sister communities –Prairie Hill and Sand Prairie; Pheasant’s Ridge assisted living and memory care; and Good Samaritan Home Care services.

Among other St. Peter health care facilities is the state operated Regional Treatment Center, established in 1866 and located on over 400 acres of land on the city’s south edge.

Health and Human Services

County-based health care services are provided by Nicollet County Social Services, now located in the new Health and Human Services building. The Health and Human Services team led the local response during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, 2021 and into 2022. For more, visit co.nicollet.mn.us or call 507-934-8559.

PARKS, TRAILS & OUTDOOR RECREATION

St. Peter has over 20 parks and nature areas that offer a variety of amenities.

The crown jewel of the 11-acre Minnesota Square Park on Highway 169 features an updated pavilion, opened in 2019. At $1.6 million, the multi-purpose facility is larger and higher quality than the previous one. Minnesota Square Park is also the center for the city’s most beloved and biggest annual celebrations – the Old Fashioned Fourth of July and the popular Rock Bend Folk Festival.

The St. Peter Veterans Memorial is located at the northeast corner of Minnesota Square Park.

Newest among St. Peter parks is the joint project adjacent to the new St. Peter High School, Community Spirit Park. The school district and city joined forces to develop the 62-acre park, with 13 multi-purpose fields for soccer and other activities, as well as two baseball fields, two softball fields, and plenty of green space just north of the school building.

There are also plans afoot for a possible sculpture park at Levee Park, at 101 S. Front St., adjacent to the St. Peter Chamber of Commerce building. The redevelopment of the small, 1.3-acre park along the Minnesota River is expected to include a riverwalk and an art garden with statues and sculptures. The Arts Center of Saint Peter is spearheading the project.

Another new project, started by residents

in summer 2019, was to build a new dog park in town. The River Valley Dog Park Association raised over $30,000 in funds, and the city contributed the rest to get phase one done in 2020. The new park is located on land at the intersection of North Swift Street and St. Julien Street.

In 2023, community members took the site of the old library building and turned the empty lot into St. Peter Plaza, a small outdoor event space suitable for markets, live music and more.

Nicollet County operates the 628-acre Seven-Mile Creek County Park, just south of the city, off 169. It offers 8 miles of trails, as well as trout stream fishing, playgrounds, two volleyball courts, a ball diamond, picnic shelters, picnic tables, grills, restrooms and a boat landing to the Minnesota River.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

St. Peter has a rich history as an arts and heritage town, proud of its backstory and culture. And it’s growing in regional recognition and activities.

Every year, St. Peter celebrates Winterfest in late January and early February, featuring a classic rock concert, a wrestling show, and a polar plunge. Then comes St. Patrick’s Day, with a whole lot of green in a community parade, plus music, food, drinks and more fun around town. The Old Fashioned Fourth celebration is the community’s longest running, having started in 1972, and it brings in thousands annually. Oktoberfest is another annual event in St. Peter that is held in the downtown each year, celebrating all things German, especially beer.

At its hub of the city’s A&E happenings is Minnesota Square Park, which hosts some of the most popular music and arts events in southern Minnesota, including the Ambassadors Blues Fest in June, The Minnesota Original Music Festival in July, and Rock Bend Folk Festival in September. A new festival planned for 2025 is John Denver Fest; the late singer’s first wife, Annie Martell, is from St. Peter. At the center of Minnesota Square Park is an aesthetically pleasing and usable pavilion, newly opened in 2019, and the huge space has room for multiple stages, thousands of guests, vendors, play areas and more.

Up the hill in St. Peter is Gustavus Adolphus College’s Hillstrom Museum of Art and its Theater & Dance and Music departments, which offer a wealth of events and performances by students and guest artists that are open to the public. A black box theater on campus offers an alternative option to the standard theater space. Find a calendar of events or purchase tickets online at gustavus.edu/finearts.

Another new addition to the community arts and performance spaces is the 750-seat

auditorium in the new St. Peter High School. The SPHS theater department opened the venue with the rousing, sell-out performances of the musical “Footloose” in November 2017 and also hosted the 20th anniversary observance of the 1998 St. Peter tornado. It continues to be a popular destination for theater and music, both from high school and outside performers.

The arts flourish throughout the St. Peter School District and private schools in St. Peter with choir, band and drama performances throughout the year.

Another entertainment option in the St. Peter community is the 2nd Story Comedy venue, which opened in 2023 in the downtown at 303 S. Minnesota Ave.

The Capitol Room at 419 S. Minnesota Ave. is a popular wedding venue, but it also hosts public events, like The Holiday Classic in December and Galentine’s Day in February. The renovated former armory building dates back to 1913 and is conveniently located in the heart of the downtown, just a walk from the city’s bars, restaurants and breweries.

The St. Peter Plaza, which opened in 2023, offers a number of smaller-scale events, like markets and live music. Its purpose is to serve as a community gathering place.

There’s also a long list of events — from films to music — at Nicollet County Historical Society’s Treaty Site History Center. Find the schedule at nchsmn.org/events.

Like to dance? St. Peter Just for Kix offers classes for students from preschool through high school. Call 507-276-8989.

And we can’t fail to mention the long history of the Govenaires Drum and Bugle Corps. The Govenaires is a highly competitive performing arts organization which calls St. Peter home and has entertained crowds across the country since 1927.

Food and Drink

New to town is Paddlefish Brewing at 108 S. Minnesota Ave. in the downtown, the city’s first brewery since Engesser Brewing Company closed in the 1940s. Less than a year later, Tremendous Brewing opened as well, taking over the old fire station building at 227 W. Mulberry St.

Popular sit-down restaurants in town include 3rd Street Tavern, China Town, El Agave, Great Wall, Jake’s Pizza, Lakeside at Shoreland, Minnesota Wing King, Nicollet Cafe, Niesen’s Riverside, and Patrick’s on Third. In addition to a number of fast food and stop in food option, the St. Peter Food Co-op offers sandwiches, a burrito bar and more popular lunch options. Bars include the American Legion, Blaschko’s Embassy, Flame Bar, and Red Men Club.

Arts Center of Saint Peter

The Arts Center of Saint Peter, which offers performances, exhibits and classes, continues to shine within the community. The center’s staff and volunteers are frequent participants at the many St. Peter festivals and community events. Its Souper Bowl fundraiser in late winter is growing in popularity, with some 400 handcrafted pottery bowls available for purchase.

Throughout the year, the center spearheads fun community-wide events, such as the popular Jesus Christ Superstar revival and singalong. Tell Me A Story is an ongoing storytelling and musical program that gives residents a chance to open up and get to know others in an intimate environment.

Founded in 1979, the center was established to share and cultivate the fine arts through year-round exhibitions, performances, education and outreach.

The center features two galleries with new

exhibitions approximately every month, spotlighting regional artists, writers and musicians, to solo and group shows by artists of national renown. The lower gallery also serves as an intimate performance venue with seating for up to 100.

A new upstairs space has opened up fiber arts opportunities at the nonprofit, including weaving, knitting and crotcheting.

Classes have been offered through partnerships with St. Peter Community & Family Education, and also individually by Arts Center staff, taught by area artists committed to helping students and adults experience and enjoy the creative process. Classes, including those at its heralded Clay Center, range from introductory sessions for children, teens and adults to drawing, printmaking and weaving.

The Arts Center has also teamed up with the Minnesota Regional Treatment Center and Department of Human Services to host performances and shows by patients at the St. Peter facility. Another new development spearheaded by Arts Center staff and the city of St. Peter’s Parks Department is plans to develop an arts garden and sculpture park at Levee Park, highlighting the works of and inspired by former St. Peter resident Paul Granlund.

Visit the center at artscentersp.org or call 507-931-3630.

Hillstrom Museum of Art

Located in the lower level of the college’s C. Charles Jackson Campus Center, the museum is named for 1938 Gustavus graduate, the Rev. Richard L. Hillstrom, who donated many of the works in its collection.

The museum is free and open daily to the public while classes are in session. Visit gustavus.edu/finearts/hillstrom or call 507-933-7200.

TREATY SITE HISTORY CENTER

More than 10,000 annually visit the Treaty Site History Center, located on Highway 169 on St. Peter’s northern edge. It features three exhibit rooms, displaying Nicollet County’s rich and intriguing history.

Exhibits also interpret the 1851 Treaty of Traverse des Sioux between the Dakota people and white settlers. The museum shop features

a variety of memorabilia, including local and related history books for adults and children. Extensive archives provide information about the historical heritage of the area. The archives contain manuscripts, family histories, photographs, church and cemetery records, obituaries and microfilmed newspapers from Nicollet County. Maps and several publications

are available to researchers and genealogists. Admission is free for Nicollet County Historical Society and Minnesota Historical Society members. Call 507-934-2160 or visit nchsmn.org.

OLD-FASHIONED 4TH OF JULY

St. Peter’s Old Fashioned Fourth of July celebrated has been operating since 1972. The Fourth of July takes place on a Friday in 2025, the perfect start to a long weekend.

Residents roll out the red, white and blue carpet during the Old Fashioned event, held annually at Minnesota Square Park following the grand parade. The event typically brings in over 10,000 revelers.

The festivities, sponsored by the St. Peter Area Chamber of Commerce, begin with the 10 a.m. parade that starts at Washington and Broadway avenues before winding its way south to Elm Street and Minnesota Square Park.

Thousands, young and old, dressed in their patriotic finest, welcome the parade — complete with area marching bands, local organizations and the Shriners and their mini cars — one of the largest in the state.

But that’s not nearly all. An afternoon picnic in the city’s beloved park includes food vendors, a hot dog eating contest, a beer tent, kids activities, music, classic cars and fun for the whole family. There’s even a Freedom Fun Run, which features a 5K and 8K race with chip

timing. For the youngsters, there’s a 1-Mile Kids Run and a Toddler Trot.

But what would the Fourth of July be without a grand finale? When the sun goes down, the sky above the Nicollet County Fairgrounds lights up with fireworks, a fitting end to a perfect day.

Get involved

For more information, to volunteer or enter the parade, contact the St. Peter Area Chamber of Commerce at 507-934-3400 or visit stpeterchamber.com.

NICOLLET COUNTY FAIR

The tradition of the county fair is alive and well in Nicollet County, creating memories here since 1872.

The fair takes place in August at the Nicollet County Fairgrounds at West Union Street in St. Peter.

The demolition derby, tractor pull and talent shows return each year, as do plenty of other fun activities.

Of course, there will be plenty of animals, carnival rides, exhibits and that irresistible fair food. Admission is free, though there is a small

fee to park on the fairgrounds

While the March 1998 tornado that ripped through St. Peter devastated the fairgrounds, today’s fairgoers will notice the restored barns and other buildings ready to welcome visitors.

Senior citizens are special guests of the fair on Friday, when two outstanding Nicollet County seniors are recognized annually at a special program. Children’s Day at the fair is Saturday, with special entertainment and reduced price tickets for carnival rides.

Sunday, the fair’s final day, is set aside

to recognize Nicollet County’s century and sesquicentennial farms, those that have remained in one family for 100 or 150 years, respectively.

The fair features 4-H exhibits and demonstrations, live music, an amateur talent show, and livestock and animal judging.

Midway amusements run each afternoon

and late into the evening, providing thrills for those who love to ride. Bingo is a regular fair feature, as are an assortment of food stands and the Jaycees Beer Garden. Be sure to stop in and experience the fun.
