FARIBAULT
WAS FOUNDED BY FRENCH-CANADIAN
FUR TRADER
ALEXANDER
FARIBAULT IN 1855
Faribault, Minnesota, a city brimming with history and charm, owes its origins to the vision of FrenchCanadian fur trader, Alexander Faribault. Recognizing the strategic advantages of the Cannon River’s location, he established trading posts in 1826. By 1835, a permanent post stood, marking Faribault’s official beginnings and its role as Rice County’s seat. Alexander built one of the first wood-frame houses in the territory, which still stands, offering tours and glimpses into pioneer life. In Heritage Park, a striking statue by Ivan Whillock honors Faribault and Chief Taopi, symbolizing the intertwined histories of
settlers and indigenous people. Faribault’s commitment to education is a cornerstone. The city boasts institutions like the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf, the Minnesota State Academy for the Blind, and Shattuck-St. Mary’s School, contributing to Faribault’s vibrant intellectual atmosphere.
From early mills (including the Faribault Mill) and breweries (like Fleck’s Beer) to modern manufacturing, Faribault’s economy has been dynamic. Manufacturing remains a major driver, with a mix of homegrown and international businesses.
