Kenyon is home to the Boulevard of Roses and the historic Gunderson House. It is nestled along the north fork of the Zumbro River, just 40 miles northwest of Rochester and only 50 miles south of downtown St. Paul.

With downtown business improvements ongoing, an array of opportunities are available when you come to Kenyon.

Enjoy the countryside homes and farms helping to make Kenyon a great place to call home. In the summer you can participate in the annual Rose Fest celebration and see

the car show, dance and parade. We’ve also recently renovated a new police department building and are proud to house full time officers.

The Kenyon Business Park was completed recently, and we are gearing up for advertising new businesses to flourish here. We have had another new restaurant open recently, and have an ongoing restoration of the M.T. Gunderson House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Most recently, we’ve put new life in the old fire hall and have a community garden open for families wishing to grow food.

We’ve completed a number of new street improvements and for families looking to build or buy in Kenyon, we have plenty of lots left and are also looking for future expansion opportunities. The city has a great library and school, churches of nearly all faiths and top notch firefighters and first responders.

History of Kenyon

In 1855, the first settlers arrived in the area.

L.N. Bye settled in the north corner of sections 7 and 8. Christian and Sever Halvorson settled in section 18 just west of the Old Stone Church, whose construction didn’t start until 1871. L.A. Felt built the first building in town on the north side of the Zumbro in 1856. These four men were the first to open up the Kenyon area.

The following year in May 1856, James A. Day and James M. LaDuc came and made claims to where the village is now situated. LaDuc named it Kenyon after his alma mater, Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. The year 1857 was busy. A steam saw mill was built. It stood where

the swimming pool is now. In March, Stephen Bullis established Kenyon’s first hotel, “The Pioneer,” on the corner just west of Roseview apartments. The village boomed with the arrival of the Chicago Great Western Railroad in 1885. A store was opened by P.L. Berg in the area of Kenyon Ace Hardware. By 1893, the village had two hotels, a foundry and machine shop, a large brick school building, a tannery, two banks, a flouring mill and a weekly newspaper. A second railroad, the Chicago Milwaukee, came along in 1903.

The small village continued to prosper until 1908 when the “April Fool’s Day Fire” destroyed seven businesses along Main Street.

Momentum was regained after World War I and after the worst of the Great Depression. Kenyon Municipal Utilities

took over electrical service in 1932 and has maintained it ever since. Telephone service, started by Dr. Joseph A. Gates in 1901, was continuously improved until a modern exchange connected all residents with service.

The school in Kenyon was accredited in 1896. In 1915, the voters of Kenyon decided a new school building was needed. Work on the $62,000 structure was completed by mid-December that year and the building was dedicated in 1916. A new gymnasium/auditorium was added in 1938 and another addition was done in 1962. A new elementary school and Picha Memorial Field were constructed in 1954. Kenyon schools combined with Wanamingo in the fall of 1990 and became District 2172.

A new Kenyon-Wanamingo Middle High School was erected in 1998 alongside the former elementary building, housing grades 5-12. A monument to the old school building was recently constructed using the decorative egg and scroll pediment and cast nameplate saved from the original 1916 building, which was demolished in 2013.

Nielsen Memorial Preserve, in the Monkey Valley area southwest of Kenyon, a county park currently being planned as a low-impact nature area with trails, biking and canoe access.

All Seasons Activity Center: Located at 516 Second Street, the center features computer stations, youth activities, adult and senior activities, mini kitchen, crafts, darts, board games, table games, movies and more. It offers a place for people in the community to come together. During the school year the center is open for adult activities from 9 a.m. -3 p.m. weekdays and youth activities for grades four to six on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-6 p.m.; hours are subject to change and may vary in the summer.

Aspelund Peony Gardens & Aspelund Winery: Located at 9204 425th Street in rural Kenyon. With over 65 varieties of lovely peony plants to choose from, the

gardens offer a fragrant and beautiful place to visit in the month of June. The winery room overlooks the flower beds and visitors may sample a variety of award-winning fruit wines crafted on site. Boulevard of Roses: If there’s one thing that is iconic of Kenyon, it is the impressive Boulevard of Roses. People driving through town on Hwy. 60 are appreciative of the beautiful display of 100 colorful and fragrant tree roses planted along Gunderson Blvd. The history of the roses dates back to 1962,

when Kenyon resident Lloyd Jystad asked permission to plant 10 standard tree roses to ornament the boulevard. He was a city employee and donated his time to care for the roses.

The unusual roses attracted so much attention that Harold Severson suggested they plant 100 roses. The new larger display garnered national acclaim, and the Boulevard of Roses was officially dedicated on June 30, 1968. Today, Kenyon city workers care for the roses, burying them beneath the ground in the fall and unearthing them in the spring. The variety of blooming rose colors and fragrances are well worth a closer look during the summer months.

Historic M.T. Gunderson House: This local gem is located on the corner of Gunderson Blvd./Huseth Street. Built in 1895, this Victorian style home home is on the National Register of Historic Places and managed by the Kenyon Area Historical Society. Most of the vintage home furnishings are original to

the Gunderson Family and other pieces of Kenyon history have been added to compliment the collection.

Tours are available on the third weekend of each month in the summer and for certain events during the winter. People may book the home for special occasions such as a wedding, shower or birthday event at a reasonable fee. The KAHS holds fundraiser and educational events at the home throughout the year, such as the cookie walk during Christmas in Kenyon, a special Norwegian Holiday Dinner and book talks by author.

Kenyon Community Gardens: Two community gardens -- one near Trondheim Park and one with raised beds near First Lutheran Church-- offer residents the opportunity to grow nutritious food and develop a love of gardening within the community. Gardening provides benefits in mental health, nutrition and exercise, and the gardens were developed with grants through Live Well Goodhue County. A

designated giving plot provides fresh produce for the All Seasons Food Shelf. Find out more information at Kenyon City Hall.

Kenyon Country Club Golf: Located right off Hwy. 60, this nine-hole public course features long, green rolling fairways and many mature trees. From the 477 yards of the ninth hole to the 138 of the eighth, the course offers an affordable challenge for every golfer. Ladies Day is every Wednesday until 2 p.m. and Men’s Day is every Thursday after 2 p.m. The club is also available to host special events in a private setting with great views of the golf course from the dining room, patio and deck. Groomed trails in winter

Kenyon Farmers Market: Located in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church parking lot in Kenyon, all items at this farmers market are homemade/ handcrafted; no MLM companies are offered. Kenyon Historic Walking Tour: Here is a chance to learn more about local history and burn calories at the same

time! Pick up the walking tour book at City Hall or an area business and then set your feet on the 2.3 mile trek around town. The walking tour features 28 historic buildings of note, both business and residential, and provides detailed information about the architecture of each. It outlines the history of the buildings and gives a glimpse into the lives of the early Kenyon pioneers. Also included in the guide is a map of the Kenyon area churches, many of which are historic in their own right.

Kenyon Municipal Swimming Pool: Located at Depot Park, the outdoor pool has lifeguards on duty and features two kiddie pools plus a big pool with two large slides. Swimming lessons are offered throughout the summer in both group and private lessons. Lap swim and water aerobics classes are available on weekdays. Resident and non-resident season passes may be purchased at the pool, as well as daily admission.

Kenyon Public Library: Located in City Hall on the main street, the library has a wide selection of the newest book bestsellers as well as the latest DVD releases. As a member of Southeastern Libraries Cooperating, items not held at the Kenyon Public Library can be requested in from another member library. The library offers free Wi-Fi and has four public computer stations. These services are available with a free library card, available to area residents.

The library hosts a variety of programming events. Pre-school story time is offered twice weekly on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. There are two adult book groups that meet monthly, one on the second Thursday of the month at 4 p.m. and the other on the last Monday of the month at 1:30 p.m. New people are always welcome.

Pawsome Readers therapy dog Marley visits the library on the first Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to noon. The children’s Summer Reading

Program takes place in June and offers special events and prizes for meeting reading goals. The library’s annual book sale is held in August during Kenyon Rose Fest.

Kenyon Veterans Memorial:

On the east end of Second Street at the intersection of Hwy. 56 and County Road 12 stands the Kenyon Veterans Memorial Park. Originally referred to as “Cannon Park” for the cannon it contains, the park has grown into a true memorial to veterans past and present. The park was officially dedicated in 2017 following the addition of three memorial walls of honor. The walls feature the name, rank, branch and time of service

of the honored veterans. Plaques may still be added to the wall and forms are available at the park. Service and branch flags fly over paved walkways, making for easy access. During Kenyon Rose Fest, the park hosts a Field of Flags along with a memorial program.

St Rose of Lima Historic Church:

Located at 8778 County 11 Blvd, Kenyon, the historic limestone church of St. Rose of Lima sits in beautiful Cherry Grove Township. The church was built in 1878 by Irish immigrants and served the Catholic community until its last mass in 1961. In 2002, The Friends of St. Rose, Inc. began restoration efforts to preserve the church and its local heritage. St. Rose is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Several special events are offered at the church, including a Memorial Day Mass, the annual Ice Cream Social in August and and Candle Lighting Ceremony in December. What Makes K-W Great!

As we prepared for the launch of our new website years ago, the concept of a Twitter hashtag emerged. Staff and community members spontaneously responded to the trial run of #whatmakesKWgreat by tweeting out their positive observations about our school district. This simple idea has grown and it is now the source of the dynamic updates on our homepage. It tells the story of how we strive everyday to be a model, rural school district.

“What makes K-W great!” is an exclamation, not a question. While the trend across the country is to try to make big schools act more like small ones, we already have that mastered. Technically, the Kenyon-Wanamingo Public Schools offer overlapping layers of bonding social capital. In simpler terms, our students have the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive range of curricular, cocurricular, and extra-curricular activities

with very few restrictions. If a K-W student wishes to take a class, join a team, or participate in an activity they can. A K-W student will regularly see their peers, school staff, and community members in multiple settings, which adds value to their educational experience.

Layers of positive relationships make K-W great! We are the Knights and we have blended Kenyon, Wanamingo, and parts of the surrounding area into a culture that is symbolically represented by the traditional strengths displayed within a Knighthood. A Knight is not gender specific. Knights learn from their adult and upperclassmen role models about the core values of respect and service to others. Our Knights strive to be the best that they can be. They take pride in their school, their community, and are held to high standards.

Four-star rated early childhood programs and childcare are available

at both the Kenyon and Wanamingo sites. Our elementary school is one of the landmarks of Wanamingo. It is nestled into a residential neighborhood alongside one of the best baseball/ softball complexes that you will find in Minnesota. The middle level and high school program is located on an expansive site at the edge of Kenyon. Each developmental stage has its own school within a school home area there.

In June of 2018, we broke ground on facilities improvements at both campuses. In Wanamingo, the historic Evert Gym was updated, along with new music and art rooms. Kenyon added a new secure entrance and commons area, a fieldhouse, locker rooms and remodeled athletic fields. Both sites added state of the art indoor early childhood activity

centers. These site improvements will benefit the 900 students who reside in a beautiful, rural territory that spans 221 square miles. Easy access to state highways 56 and 52 ensure that both the Twin Cities and Rochester are only a short drive away.

K-W is a welcoming place that aims to serve residents and neighbors by partnering with families to customize the educational experience. This includes the recreation and adult learning and leisure programs offered by the Community Education Program. All residents will soon benefit from the unique spaces being added during our construction phase.

History of Wanamingo

According to the Wanamingo Historical Society, the town was named after a heroine of an Indian novel that was popular at the time. The original village began with the platting of 40 acres by James Brown in sections 25 & 26 in 1857. That land is located 1 mile west of present day Wanamingo.

In 1903, the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway Co. platted and sold lots for a new town where the present day township is located. With the rail line right in the township, growth came quickly thereafter and Wanamingo incorporated in 1917.

In 2003 — with its population then exceeding 1,000 — Wanamingo turned 100, and celebrated with a logo contest and pin, plays and a keepsake calendar. In 2023, the town hit 120 years.

Wanamingo still has an original old log cabin which sits at the south end of Main Street near the old water tower. The Wanamingo Fire Department celebrated a century of service to the community in 2013. :

The city has the honor of being the namesake for former Gov. Mark Dayton’s German shepherd.

History Dennisonof

A village that originally was part of Warsaw and Northfield townships in Rice County, Dennison was named after Morris P. Dennison, a settler near its site in 1856, on whose land the village was located. The little village was first settled by 1849 and incorporated as a village on December 3, 1904. Dennison became a city in its own right on July 20, 1907.

Its post office began in 1885, although there is some confusion as to whether it was named Spring Creek before the post office was established in Postmaster Gunnar A. Bonhus’s general store.

Dennison himself first visited Minnesota in 1849 from Vermont, brought his family in 1856, and filed a land claim, building a log shanty in the center of the city. He moved to Northfield in 1865 and died there in a farming accident in 1879.

History of Nerstrand

In 1856, Norwegian immigrant Osmund Osmundson moved to Wheeling Township in Rice County, where he homesteaded at the present site of Nerstrand, building a house and farm. In 1877, he built a store on what became the right-of-way for railroad tracks on what is now Main Street. In 1885, the Minnesota and Northwestern Railroad (later the Chicago Great Western Railway) was constructed, extending from Lyle, Minnesota, in Mower County to St. Paul. Osmundson platted the town on the line, naming it after his hometown of Nedstrand in Norway. Osmundson later became a state legislator.

Thorstein Veblen, who grew up just outside of the town, became a nationally renowned sociologist and economist. His farmstead is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Nerstrand’s first city hall was built in 1897. A newer one was built in 1907. That building, as well as homes belonging to Osmund Osmundson and another famous Nerstrander, Tosten Bonde, are also considered national historic landmarks.

Places to visit

Nerstrand Big Woods State Park

Located just a few miles up the road at 9700 170th St. E by Nerstrand, Big Woods features nearly 3,000 acres of the old growth woods that covered much of southern and central Minnesota before settlers arrived. The park offers environmental education, birding, a visitor’s center, camping and hiking on a variety of wooded trails. Additional features include Hidden Falls waterfall, spectacular spring wildflowers, and fabulous fall color. Wintertime activities include snowshoeing and cross country skiing, on occasion by moonlight. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Nerstrand City Hall

Built in 1908, the hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is one of Rice County’s best examples of municipal buildings constructed in the first decades of the 20th Century.

History of West Concord

Organized in 1884 along the path of the new railroad line, the village of West Concord gets its name from the nearby town of Concord. Many businesses and homes were built in the early days as the town grew. Building materials were plentiful and there were many good jobs.

The town outgrew several smaller schoolhouses and voters eventually approved a bond for construction money to build a brick school building. Completed in 1902, with additions built in 1914 and 1936, the school still stands and is now the West Concord Historical Society Museum. The gymnasium and stage section, which were built with the assistance of a Federal grant and WPA workers, are now the West Concord Community Center. By 1991 the West Concord School District combined

Valley Grove Church

Visit these two historic churches on a hill, built by Norwegian immigrants. The 1862 church is a stone building and the 1894 church is made of white clapboard. Valley Grove Church, with its cemetery and Oak savanna and prairie, is on the National Register of Historic Sites and is maintained and promoted by the Valley Grove Preservation Society. West Concord had a large stock pavilion which opened in 1919 on the north side of Main Street. According to accounts, it sold 110 head of registered Holsteins for a total of $42,655. Dairy and farming were big business for the area, and it was known to sell and ship dairy cattle both nationally and internationally.
