NICOLLET COUNTY FAIR

Fairgrounds busy throughout year, board eyes improvements By DANA MELIUS dmelius@stpeterherald.com When visitors to come to this year’s Nicollet County Fair, which runs Aug. 8-12 in St. Peter, many will journey through the unassuming complex called Johnson Hall. Beginning a day before the official fair opening, the fairgrounds’ largest hall plays host to 4-H judging, then reopens the morning of Aug. 8 as the premier location on the fairgrounds. But Johnson Hall doesn’t just stand empty after the annual celebration in St. Peter. It remains a busy place throughout the year. A 22-member fair board has seen a gradual increase in events scheduled at the Nicollet County Fairgrounds, located in north St. Peter. There might be a toy show in January, a dog show in May, or a high school rodeo in June. After the annual Nicollet County Fair in August, there’s a car show in September and, beginning last year, the popular regional Maker Fair, where arts and crafts take center stage. But the cold and rain which hit the Maker Fair last October created some difficult conditions for vendors and attendees. Virtually none of the fairgrounds is paved, and a lack of indoor space meant many were left outside to the elements. Windy Block, president of the Nicollet County Fair Board,
said directors are aware of the need to upgrade. But it comes at a cost. “The facilities are 20 years old,” Block said. “We’re trying to sock away money for improvements. We’re putting money back into the grounds.” Still, it costs plenty to put on the Nicollet County Fair. “We generate enough money to make expenses; we’re not going into the red, but we need more to make improvements above and beyond,” Block added. The St. Peter community has been generous, he noted, in supplementing fair revenues with grants and donations. The Carl & Verna Schmidt Foundation has donated funds to expand the bleacher section of the grandstand. And other businesses have often partnered with the fair and events. Block said a priority is to upgrade the gravel roads and parking area, paving sections to make it easier for people, particularly senior citizens and handicapped individuals, to access and move around the fairgrounds. Johnson Hall, which Block says is the fairgrounds’ biggest money maker with a slate of special events, has had one air conditioner replaced. But the other one needs to replaced, as well, he said. And the bare-bones building needs to have its doors and ceiling tiles repaired. The entire facility could use improvements to make it more energy efficient,

according to Block. Still, the hall continues to be a popular location for weddings, anniversaries, trade shows and craft fairs, as it’s large enough to accommodate up to 500 people. And even if vendors need to move outdoors, many enjoy the grassy open space in the middle of the grounds. Helena Shanks, a co-owner at River Rock Coffee in downtown St. Peter, said her business weathered the cold of last October’s Maker Fair and has been
invited back for this year’s event. She and barista Maren Reser shivered under their tent along with other vendors last year, but they’ll be back. “But I sure hope it’s not as cold this year,” Shanks said. That won’t be the problem for the fair. The long-range forecast for Aug. 8-12 has a low of 59 degrees, a high of 83, and only a chance of rain for that Friday. Block, fellow board members and fairgoers should like that prospect.

Annexstad learned a lot about herself while teaching others about dairy farms
By ASHLEY MURTHA amurtha@lecenter.com
Princess Kay of the Milky Way Emily Annexstad has had a busy schedule year-round, but she learned something along the way. Annexstad was crowned 2017 Princess Kay of the Milky Way just before the Minnesota State Fair opened last August. She spent the year fulfilling her duties as Dairy Princess, representing dairy farmers from across the state. “The first thing I did was spend every day at the State Fair last year,” Annexstad said. “I’ve always loved the State Fair and always wanted to spend every day there. I love the energy that people who attend the Fair have and their willingness and excitement to try new foods or talk to the Dairy Princesses.” She spent the rest of the year attending media interviews, fairs, classroom sessions and other community events.
“Any opportunity to talk to people and share dairy farmer stories is something I get to attend,” Annexstad said. Annexstad also promoted the Fuel Up to Play 60 program which helps kids eat better and stay active, which was featured as a part of Super Bowl festivities. The group was launched by the National Dairy Council and also has a partnership with the National Football League. Though Annexstad has been fulfilling her duties all year, she said that this summer has been her busiest time by far. “June is National Dairy Month and I’ve gone to many celebrations and events,” Annexstad said. She has also done some nursing home visits throughout the year. “A lot of them grew up on farms, too, so it’s fun to hear their stories and talk about the changes in farming,” Annexstad said. “Even though a lot of things have changed, we still
have the same values of caring for our animals and providing nutritious food for others to enjoy.” At every event, Annexstad got the chance to talk to a variety of different people and tell them about the dairy farming community. “I’ve enjoyed it so far,” Annexstad said. “I’ve always enjoyed taking to people. Sharing all of my farmer stories and talking about dairy to different communities is something I really enjoy doing.” Annexstad said she learned a lot about herself through the whole process as well. “I learned that I really enjoy talking to people,” Annexstad said. “That first week at the State Fair, I thought it might get overwhelming, but I ended up loving every minute of it.” Through talking to people, she learned that many of them

He’s a Lafayette Area Lions, inthe New Ulm Farm-City Hub Club, a board member of the New Ulm Area Foundation, and a board member of the Brown County Rural Electric Association, which serves Brown and Nicollet counties. “Being involved in the community has always been something ingrained in me,” Tom said. Patti is active in church activities, the Lafayette Band and is a past 4-H adult leader for the Bernadotte 4-H Club. “4 Hers talk through their project with a judge, which makes children comfortable with adults and presenting in front of people,” Patti said, which is one of her favorite aspects of the program.
Emily Annexstad has been Princess Kay of the Milky Way since last year’s State Fair. She has visited classrooms, nursing homes and festivals over the past year, talking about dairy nutrition and farming. (Herald file photo)
Family life Tom and Patti raised four children on the farm, where local community, church and 4-H involvement was a constant. Son David, a mechanical engineer, and wife Micaela live in Wisconsin; daughter Anna is working on a doctorate in food science at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana; son John is preparing for the priesthood, and
son Daniel is at the University of Minnesota completing a degree in agricultural fields, including animal science and agronomy. He has an internship with WinField United, a subsidiary of Land O’Lakes, this summer. Daniel has shown interest in returning to run the farm. “They’re all pursuing what they planned on right from high school,” Patti said. They’re proud of all of them for finding fields that fit their personalities and passions. David, Anna, John and Daniel were active on the farm and highly involved local 4-H, starting at age five, and FFA programs with livestock and nonlivestock projects. “They were very interested in the animal projects,” Patti said. “They had great experiences and friendships from 4-H.” When their children were all at home, they would camp a few times each summer, visiting state parks. Invariably, they’d camp at the state fair, too. “Now, I’m just very happy when we’re all together,” Patti said. After more than 40 years in a hog enterprise, that dissolved last year, leaving just corn and soybeans for now. Tom said the challenges for agriculture are the cost of inputs and the amount of debt farms must carry. “You don’t buy new, you get by with less,” he said. “Technology has become a big part of ag-
riculture, but all that has cost.” Technology gives farmers more data to be better farmers, making more precise applications of seed and fertilizer, for example, Tom said. Each year, the University of Minnesota recognizes more than 80 families through the Farm Family of the Year program. “The farm families receiving this year’s honors exemplify what makes Minnesota agriculture strong,” said Bev Durgan, Dean of Extension, in a news release. “They bring innovation, science and hard work to farming. They care greatly about the land and animals and delivering quality products to consumers worldwide.” In Nicollet County, past recipients chose the current year’s farm family of the year based on the family’s “demonstrated commitment to enhancing and supporting agriculture and community involvement,” the release said. The Hayes family will be recognized in ceremonies at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 9 at the annual Minnesota Farmfest on the Gilfillan Estate near Redwood Falls and at 1 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Nicollet County Fair in Johnson Hall. Tom and Patti Hayes were told by the Bastians, who were named farm family for 2015. “It’s a total honor,” Patti said. “There are a lot of deserving families.”

Continued from page 4 really want to know where their food is coming from. “People want to hear what it’s like to grow up on a farm more than I realized,” Annexstad said. “I think people become more removed from farming and now they are becoming more interested in where food comes from which makes it really vital for dairy farmers to share their stories and experiences. People want to connect and want to know where food is coming from.” After Annexstad passes the sash on to the next Princess Kay the day before the Minnesota State Fair, Aug. 22, she will continue her college career, heading into her third year at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. She is studying agricultural science and agricultural communications and marketing at the school. “I’m excited about new leadership roles in different organizations on campus, like the Gopher Dairy Club,” Annexstad said. “After college, I hope to be

I really enjoyed talking to people, so I want to be in marketing or human relations within the dairy community.” During last year’s State Fair, Annexstad, along with the other county dairy princesses nominated for the Princess Kay of the Milky Way title, all had their heads carved into 90 pounds of butter and Annexstad says she
still has hers. “It’s still in my family’s basement freezer,” Annexstad said. “It’s good for a few years in the freezer, but I hope to have a community corn feed or some other kind of event sometime to give thanks to the community and everyone who has supported me on the way as well as use up some of that delicious butter.”

Nicollet County Fair Board president Windy Block stays active in community By PAT BECK pbeck@stpeterherald.com Windy Block is one of the most active volunteers in St. Peter. But as a leader of many groups, he knows it would not be possible to complete community projects without the help of volunteers. Case in point: As president of Nicollet County Fair Board, Block leads a 22-member board of directors, plus he has to recruit and assign duties to dozens of people. However, Block always finds people willing to serve. “Everybody in the community is always willing to pitch in,” Block said. “If you don’t get involved, you’ve got no reason to complain.” In his 40th year as a member of the Fair Board, Block, 73, is in his fourth year as president. He also served as St. Peter fire chief for 35 years until 2010 and compared that to being Fair Board president. He said both are like coaching people to do things. Block tries to assign volunteers duties they’re interested in doing. For example, he said if somebody likes washing dishes, he would guide him or her into that job. A labor of love Volunteers each have their own expertise, so they specialize in supervising those activities. For example, some specialize in demolition derbies, some in harness racing and some in truck and tractor pull. “Sometimes you have to put people in jobs they don’t like if a job has to be done,” Block said. Block said fortunately he has help from the Fair Board members, plus executive secretary Ann Volk, co-treasurers Brian and Jan Kuiper and his “right hand man,” Vice President Don

A token payment is given to Volk and the Kuipers, but all other volunteers, including the Fair Board, are not paid. “It’s a labor of love and stupidity,” Block joked. “All of the people are passionate about the county fair. If you want to get off the Fair Board, you have to die.” Block is not planning to retire. “I’m in it for the long haul,” he said. “It has its ups and downs, but the day after the fair, we have an appreciation dinner, and it’s all worth it.” New to the fair Each year, the Fair Board adds something new to the fairgrounds. This year, Mankato’s Vine Faith in Action, with help from Nicollet County Pubic Transportation System and TRUE Transit, is offering free rides to the fair from anywhere in Nicollet County (excluding St. Peter) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Aug 4. Reservations are due Aug. 7. That day is also senior day, in which there is free parking on the fairgrounds for ages 55 and up. Golf carts will be available for
rides around the grounds. Admission is free. New children’s events include the Children’s Ag Zone with jumping into the straw maze and corn pile and riding farm pedal tractors around the hay maze for 8 years and younger. Plus there is a new cow milking station to test farmer skills, a new chicken coop, children’s puppet theater, children’s gardening on Saturday in Johnson Hall, beginner paint at 6 p.m. Thursday near the beer garden and FFA members ag education demonstrations. The battery-powered Kid’s Power Wheel Demo returns prior to the adult demolition derbies on Friday and Saturday, plus kids can drive the power wheel around the track at noon Sunday at the auto races. “Kids get a big bang out of that,” Block said. A church service will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday in Johnson Hall with the Rev. Shelly Olson of Scandian Grove Lutheran Church. In addition to the fair, special events are held nearly every month. In the last few years, the Winter Slam demolition derby

has been added in February. The Maker Fair craft show was added in October. The high school rodeo is in June, car show in September, dog show in May and toy show in January. Weddings, anniversaries, graduations, business events, trade shows and other celebrations are held in Johnson Hall. Good place to meet people Block thinks the fair is important for people to meet people. “With texting and emailing, people don’t do a lot of face-toface communication any more,” Block said. “It’s good to talk to people in person.” Block, who had a tractor and a mower, started out mowing, doing construction work and clean barns at the fairgrounds. A Fair Board member asked him, “You’re always down here, how about being on the Fair Board?” He has been on the Fair Board ever since, although he was diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 1982.
“The good Lord gave me the knows the majority of the people opportunity to stick around and we deal with in the fair. It helps keep giving back,” Block said. that Windy has a background “And I have a very understanding with the city, veterans and everyfamily and wife, Diane. I sleep thing.
