VISITORS CENTER

At roughly 2:00 p.m., September 7, 1876, eight men rode into town, intent on robbing the First National Bank of Northfield. It would later be called a textbook JamesYounger bank robbery, and it began with three members of the gang entering the bank and announcing that it was a holdup. The three desperados ordered three bank employees to open the safe, but were told the vault was locked and couldn’t be opened.

On the street, local citizens began to arm themselves when a merchant discovered the robbery in progress. Upon their discovery, two gang members sprang to their horses and began shooting and yelling at the townspeople to leave the street. This forced the other three robbers into the fray. The first to fall was a Swedish immigrant named Nicholas Gustafson, who remained on the street because he did not understand English.

The battle lasted only seven minutes, but when it was over two robbers lay dead in the street and two more were badly wounded. Six outlaws fled south, and the largest manhunt at that time in U.S. history ensued. The Younger brothers were captured and Charlie Pitts was killed near Madelia, MN. Jesse and Frank James escaped the posse and made it to Missouri.

The heroes that day included J.S. Allen, A.R. Manning, Henry Wheeler and others. But the biggest hero was Joseph Lee Heywood, who died because he would not open the bank vault and betray the trust of the bank owners and his fellow Northfield citizens. It is the extraordinary courage of these townspeople that we honor on the weekend after Labor Day each year during Defeat of Jesse James Days.

The Town That Stood

HISTORY - In 1855, John Wesley North settled in what would become Northfield for the great hydrologic power potential and abundant natural resources. North built a saw mill, then a grist mill and a bridge. In 2015, Post Consumer Brands purchased MOM Brands (Malt-O-Meal) and continues to operate a mill in the same location established by North. In fact, Northfield is the only place in the world where Malt-O-Meal hot cereal is produced!

WINTER ACTIVITIES

Cross-Country Skiing

Miles of well-groomed trails await your skinny skis. Try the trails at Cowling Arboretum at Carleton College, River Bend Nature Center, or Nerstrand Big Woods State Park.

Ice Skating and Hockey

Indoor open skating is available at the Northfield Ice Arena from November through March. Outdoor facilities can be found at five city parks, Northfield High School and Carleton and St. Olaf colleges.

Sledding hills on either side of the Cannon River

Most folks are aware of the two prestigious colleges that anchor Northfield’s east side (Carleton College) and west side (St. Olaf College). But did you know both colleges sport outstanding hills for premium sledding? For years, locals have taken advantage of the easy-to-access hills to wear out their kids and get the best sledding south of the river. Head over to Old Main at St. Olaf (off of Lincoln St. S.) or Bell Field at Carleton (east side of campus) to sled the winter away. Enjoy it while you can, because the trek up the hills will catch up with you.

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing trails are abundant when snow conditions are right. The natural lands at St. Olaf College and the Arboretum at Carleton College are great spots right in town, or head out to nearby Caron Park, Nerstrand Big Woods State Park, or River Bend Nature Center. Everywhere

Northfield loves its art. It’s everywhere. From its nationally-recognized liberal arts colleges to the halfcentury old arts guild, from sidewalk poetry to local art displayed in city hall, Northfield residents can’t get enough. Why don’t you join us and appreciate some of the finer offerings of life?

28 ARTS EVERYWHERE
Gallery show at ‘The Guild’ Northfield’s Arts Guild.

Take one stroll through Northfield, Minnesota, with its many sculptures and sidewalks engraved with poetry, and you’ll know you’re in a place where the arts take center stage. Whether you’re inclined toward cultural museums and fine art galleries, upbeat music and live theater, or simply discovering the innovative creations of true craftspeople, Northfield has it and can’t wait to share it with you.

Northfield Arts Guild

Let’s start with the most obvious entry on this list. The Northfield Arts Guild, founded in 1961 by artists of various disciplines, is the purveyor of all-things artsy in the fair town of Northfield. And The Guild is far from a one-trick pony. The Northfield Arts Guild offers more than 100 events annually and 40 weekly art classes.

From art galleries to exhibits, from classes to dancing, from theater in the Northfield Arts Guild Theater to theater in Central Park, there’s a little bit of everything offered by The Guild for a fan of art. In 2013, more than 1,200 local artists’ work was exhibited, more than 400 students took classes and 31,000 people passed through the doors of the Northfield Arts Guild.

Carleton College

Carleton College’s arts calendar is nothing short of exceptional, featuring a wide array of concerts, film screenings, and theater productions. Also, be sure to check out Carleton’s Perlman Teaching Museum, which emphasizes the role that art plays in posing questions about life. The museum offers two impressive galleries and fully equipped support space.

St. Olaf College

Across the Cannon River to the west stands historic St. Olaf College, where the performing and visual arts are a big deal. St. Olaf embraces music, theater, dance and the visual arts. If you can score tickets, the renowned St. Olaf Christmas Festival is an experience that can’t be described. The show is so revered, it airs annually on Twin Cities Public Television. Elsewhere, St. Olaf offers a vibrant art showcase and is well-known for its innovative theater productions and dance performances. The Flaten Art Museum is a must visit for an art lover.

Sidewalk Poetry

When walking around Northfield, don’t forget to look down or you might miss

the city’s famed sidewalk poetry! The Arts and Culture Commission launched the Sidewalk Poetry Project in 2011. Each February, a competition is held whereby local residents may submit up to two short poems for consideration. Beginning in May, the winning poems are installed in sidewalks throughout the community, followed by a celebratory Capstone Event held the third Thursday of August in Northfield’s downtown Bridge Square.

Riverwalk Market Fair

The Northfield area is full of talented artists and artisans. Each Saturday morning, from May through October, Bridge Square in the heart of Northfield is turned over to vendors and a rotating list of musicians who kick off the weekend with warmth. From handmade jewelry to woodworking, pastries to produce, and a guest musician each week, the lovely Riverwalk Market Fair is always a treat to peruse and enjoy.

Northfield Sculptures

When you’re not looking down at Northfield’s sidewalk poetry, simply look around and you’re bound to see the many beautiful sculptures placed around town.

Out and about on the town

The historic Carnegie Northfield Public Library, recently renovated and heralded as the best public library in the state, by WCCO viewers, is art in itself through its architecture. Inside, a wonderful literary collection awaits. Outside, a rotating sculpture created by high school students can be found on the corner of Division Street and Third Street. If you make it to

Northfield City Hall, enjoy the rotating works from local artists. It truly is a citywide effort and appreciation.

Local Venues with Live Music

Live music can be found almost every day of the week in downtown Northfield. From Irish, jazz, and bluegrass jam sessions to piano balladeers and original indie rock, there’s something for everyone. Head to the Contented Cow to catch performances at their indoor or outdoor stage. You’ll find the Keepsake Cidery, Dawn’s Bar, Imminent Brewing, and Tanzenwald Brewing Company rocking most weekend nights.

The homes and neighborhoods of Northfield are a fascinating blend of the historic, traditional and contemporary; and new developments have remained sensitive to facilitating community connections.

Close to the city center you will find tree-lined streets and predictable lots completing John North’s original, orderly grid plat design. There are stately, 19th-century homes that stand as a testament to the community’s prosperity and optimism as it came of age. There are more modest, but no less romantic, two-story homes, many with sprawling front porches that promote neighborhood conversation. The homes have been well maintained. Many have been restored to their original design, and others have been gracefully adapted to suit

contemporary living patterns. The growth in the latter half of the 20th century produced a new look with the custom-built ranch housed placed along curvilinear streets and cul-de-sacs as the city gradually expanded its borders. In more recent years, there has been the rapid addition of large, distinctive homes that favor threecar garages, first in developments east of town and more recently on the northwest edge of town. There have also been a number of town home and twin home developments that have proved popular with empty nesters, retirees or single professionals;

and apartments are located throughout the community.

A number of area communities are considered part of Northfield’s extended family. They offer a more intimate, cluster lifestyle that combines country living with the benefit of nearby neighbors.

Known as a community that supports education, Northfield is home to two prestigious liberal arts colleges and supports its public and private schools.

NORTHFIELD PUBLIC SCHOOLS

VISION: We prepare every student for lifelong success by developing critical thinkers who are curious and ready to engage in our society.

The district features many schools for you including three elementary schools, a middle school, a high school, an alternative high school and sponsors several charter schools. Community education is offered through Community Services and includes early childhood education, adult basic education and programs for adults with disabilities.

CHARTER SCHOOL

Arcadia is a public, project-based, progressive school serving students in grades 6-12. Arcadia’s mission is to prepare students to transition intellectually, emotionally, and ethically to higher education, future employment, and engaged citizenship. Through collaboration and student-driven projects, students: express themselves creatively through the visual, literary, and performing arts; use technology with innovation, imagination, and responsibility; develop critical thinking and creative problem solving skills; construct knowledge and meaning for themselves; value, advocate, and strive for the wellness of the whole person; and are empowered to act as local citizens within a rapidly changing global community.

EDUCATION

PRIVATE SCHOOL

St. Dominic School, Preschool-8 grade, inspires children to excel as confident leaders, critical thinkers, and responsible citizens, in a Catholic values-based community. St. Dominic School welcomes people of all faiths and backgrounds and teaches the whole child: mind, body and spirit in a right-sized class setting. The school has partnerships with Groves Academy for grades Preschool-3rd in Literacy, Kahn Academy for grades 4-5 in Math, Bellevue University for all grades in Civics, and STEM with local partnerships in all grades.

HIGHER EDUCATION

Northfield is also home to two colleges, Carleton College and St. Olaf College. Carleton College is a private liberal arts college founded in 1866 when the Minnesota Conference of Congregational Churches unanimously accepted a resolution to locate a college in Northfield. The school was named for William Carleton who donated $50,000 to the institution in 1871. The 200-acre main campus is home to 2,044 undergraduate students and employs 212 faculty members.

St. Olaf College is a private liberal arts college founded in 1874 by a group of

Norwegian-American immigrant pastors and farmers. The college is named after the King and the Patron Saint Olaf II of Norway and is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Known as “the Hill,” St. Olaf is home to 3,040 undergraduate students and employs 246 faculty members.
