Rice County
Fair
July 17-22, 2018
2018 County Fair offers new attractions along with old favorites By CLARE BENDER cbender@faribault.com This year, the Rice County Fair — which runs July 17-22 — is offering several new events that are sure to draw people in. “I get feedback on Facebook with what people like at the fair,” said John Dvorak, the fair’s executive secretary. “You try to bring back what people are interested in. Fair board members have some ideas also. It’s just a lot of
time different venues for entertainment with their schedule and what their schedule allows is an important part.” One of the most anticipated attractions includes the new barn that can be seen at the fairgrounds’ front entrance. The construction of the barn began in early June and has been in the process for about a month and a half. The unveiling will be Wednesday, July 18, with a dedication at 6 p.m.
Don Hora, who helped build the barn, said when asked what he was most excited about when it comes to the barn, “When it’s done.” Dvorak hopes that more people will be drawn to the DNR building, which, in the past, has often been forgotten about. The DNR building will display wonderful opportunities to explore and learn about different species of animals. There will be a butterfly exhibit, which will
highlight the environment and eco systems. There will also be a TV set up to play a video about various environmental issues. Additionally, there will be a wild things exhibit which will showcase various exotic animals. Also new this year, on Friday afternoon a group called The Oz Brothers will walk around the fair dressed as characters from The Wizard of Oz. The University of Minnesota’s Raptor Center will also be
at the fair on Saturday, July 21. In the past, they have brought a bald eagle that will hopefully intrigue and amaze fairgoers again. Fortunately, for the folks who are looking forward to familiarity, there are several returning acts, which include The Whitesidewalls, The Jolly P’s, and other entertainers including magician Brodini and Tuey the Juggler. On Wednesday night at the grandstand, there will be the mega jump for bicycles.
Children can join in on the fun. On Wednesday evening, the Kids’ Pedal Tractor Pull should also draw many children to join in the fair fun. There will also be a Children’s Barnyard that will include live animals. Children will have the opportunity to see baby animals such as bunnies, a calf, goats, and more. The Rice County Historical Society will

The bench honors the deceased Master gardeners (Clare Bender/Faribault Daily News).
Bench honors deceased master gardeners, brings a sense of calm By CLARE BENDER cbender@faribault.com By the entrance to the Rice County Fairgrounds is a calm and beautiful garden sanctuary. There is a fountain, beautiful flowers and garden decorations — all maintained by master gardeners. New this year, there is a bench to honor and commemorate deceased master gardeners. The bench was installed only last week, but it is here now, just in time for the Rice County Fair. Started in 1972, the Master Gardener Volunteer Program, which is connected to the University of Minnesota, uses research-based horticultural practices and skills to promote healthy lifestyles. The program focuses on ways to help people
and communities gain better access to become knowledgeable about the world around them, and how they can give back to the planet and the community. Master gardeners are volunteers who not only love to garden but also devote their time to instilling these thoughts and values around them and in their community. Currently, there are 19 master gardeners in Rice County. Each county has its own group of master gardeners. According to Debbie Hofmaster, a master gardener, the program raises money through Rice County Horticulture Day, which takes place at St. Olaf College, typically in the first or second week of March. The event includes speakers who address certain topics, such as flowers, plants, bees and butterflies. This
day includes silent auctions. Also, the program receives donations from different vendors. “We do these types of projects to support our community, so we would really like to thank everyone that supports us,” Hofmaster said. The Rice County Fair will provide a good opportunity for people to sit and enjoy the beauty of the garden. The master gardeners developed this “teaching garden.” The garden includes several sections: the Shade Garden, the Butterfly Garden, the Sun Garden, the Rain Garden, and a water fountain feature. Also, the master gardeners donated the gazebo that is near the garden. Hofmaster, whose idea it was to install this bench, said that she hopes people will come
to relax and “find calmness” as they sit on the bench and enjoy the beautiful garden. Rosanne Busch, who has been a master gardener for 10 years, agreed. Additionally, Busch encourages people to come and visit and ask questions. “For a lot of people, gardening is work, but if you love gardening, it’s not work, you just go out and putz. It doesn’t sound like work, if you call it putzing,” Busch laughed. Anyone interested in becoming a master gardener should contact Program Coordinator Barbara Montanye at the Rice County Extension Office at 507-332-6164.
