2018 County Fair offers new attractions along with old favorites By CLARE BENDER cbender@faribault.com This year, the Rice County Fair — which runs July 17-22 — is offering several new events that are sure to draw people in. “I get feedback on Facebook with what people like at the fair,” said John Dvorak, the fair’s executive secretary. “You try to bring back what people are interested in. Fair board members have some ideas also. It’s just a lot of
time different venues for entertainment with their schedule and what their schedule allows is an important part.” One of the most anticipated attractions includes the new barn that can be seen at the fairgrounds’ front entrance. The construction of the barn began in early June and has been in the process for about a month and a half. The unveiling will be Wednesday, July 18, with a dedication at 6 p.m.
Don Hora, who helped build the barn, said when asked what he was most excited about when it comes to the barn, “When it’s done.” Dvorak hopes that more people will be drawn to the DNR building, which, in the past, has often been forgotten about. The DNR building will display wonderful opportunities to explore and learn about different species of animals. There will be a butterfly exhibit, which will
highlight the environment and eco systems. There will also be a TV set up to play a video about various environmental issues. Additionally, there will be a wild things exhibit which will showcase various exotic animals. Also new this year, on Friday afternoon a group called The Oz Brothers will walk around the fair dressed as characters from The Wizard of Oz. The University of Minnesota’s Raptor Center will also be
at the fair on Saturday, July 21. In the past, they have brought a bald eagle that will hopefully intrigue and amaze fairgoers again. Fortunately, for the folks who are looking forward to familiarity, there are several returning acts, which include The Whitesidewalls, The Jolly P’s, and other entertainers including magician Brodini and Tuey the Juggler. On Wednesday night at the grandstand, there will be the mega jump for bicycles.
Children can join in on the fun. On Wednesday evening, the Kids’ Pedal Tractor Pull should also draw many children to join in the fair fun. There will also be a Children’s Barnyard that will include live animals. Children will have the opportunity to see baby animals such as bunnies, a calf, goats, and more. The Rice County Historical Society will
