utumn for me is all about stability, no matter how boring it sounds. It’s about cooling down after the tumultuous fashion week, after the extremely busy September, post-vacation stress and excitements. It’s about doing the groundwork for a productive working year, and here comes the useful examples of our October issue protagonists. Be it Natasha Slater, Odilia Prisco or Rosario Alessandrello, these people are as much dreamers as workaholics. Details apart, the straightest way to success is persistence, determination and discipline. Fashion serves this mission as well; sport has never been so in, letting us be active with all possible kinds of sneakers. This way, even the most fashionable of us have no excuse not to run forward and succeed. In the new issue we give advice on all sectors of life, because autumn is also about balance. Work hard, play hard. To recharge after the daily routine drink bio wines, enjoy the best Milanese aperitifs, go for one-day trips in Northern Italy and top it all with a nice reading of our favorite exclusive interviews with the duo from Dsquared2 and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Ironic, comfortable, and irresistible, the new furry sneaker from Pierre Hardy was created to make us smile and make us walk without touching the ground.

CITY GUIDE AUTUMN IS MAGIC “Listen to the scent of heaven, earth colors, autumn is advancing.” Stephen Littleword would so welcome the season that unfolds after all the heat and fun of summer. Undoubtedly, October and November are months filled with a complicated climate as it gets colder. But there is good news! First of all, for those who want to get ready for the chill there are so many new clothes to buy. Secondly, in Milan and throughout Italy there are many events that you will want to follow. For example? In the city the pop icon Lady Gaga will be in concert; and in Rome the newest edition of the Film Festival will be unveiled. This festival attracts actors and directors from around the world. The fashion professionals will be following the Modaprima exhibition in Florence, which is dedicated to fast fashion. You see? Fall is full of colors and opportunities to live life! Valerio Venturi

LADY GAGA N OV E M BE R 4 T H | M M A S S AG O | M I L A N Awaiting the succes of “Cheek to Cheek”, the upcoming collaboration album by American singer Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, the fans of Lady Gaga can have their party in Milan, on November 4th, as the transgressive songwriter comes to the city to present the Artpop tour. Are you ready? As usual, the live show will be full of energy and full of entertainment. Gaga, described by Polish weekly “Wprost” as “an icon of modernity (and fashion) elevated by the power which she exercises over mass media, a prominent specialist in creating her own image”, is always generous with her “little monsters”. She dances, sings and screams, proposing ever interesting clothes and mise-enscene. With constant costume changes, backup dancers, and provocative visuals, Gaga’s music shows are often described as “short films”, very spectacular and cool. Some say she’s the queen of pop. If you’re a Gaga fan you should be at the Assago Forum of Milan on November 4th. “Every dollar I earn”, says Gaga, “goes on the show”. ticketone.it

ROMA FILM FESTIVAL

Jennifer Lawrence

16 T H T O 25 T H OF O C T OBE R In October the ninth edition of the International Film Festival of Rome will be held. The capital of Italy hopes to return to the glorious splendor of La Dolce Vita, from the two Oscar-winning icons Sorrentino & Servillo. This edition will be less academic and static than usual. Marco Müller, Artistic Director of the Festival, spoke of a “turnaround.” The Roma Film Festival wants to be a big event that is able to engage citizens and foreign guests on multiple levels, and to revive the social function of cinema. Where will this be located? The Auditorium Parco della Musica and at the other various theaters in the city and surrounding area. The most important awards will be chosen thanks to the votes and opinions of the public. There will not only be movies but also forty short films to watch. This year begins a new independent section and a parallel addition; “Alice In The City” is dedicated to children’s films with a jury of young people between 14 and 18 years of age. The focus is on emerging Italian talents and international proposals. If you like cinema come to Rome for this festival and for the Cinecittà World, the first theme-park in Italy dedicated to the world of cinema. It is designed by Dante Ferretti, Production Designer and winner of three Oscars. It has a western area inspired by the films of Sergio Leone and 20 attractions, 8 movie sets, 4 theaters, and 4 thematic restaurants. Rome will once more become an “Open city”! romacinemafest.it

There is a breath of fresh air in the presidency of the Torino Film Festival. The shrewd Tuscan director Paolo Virzi gives way to Emanuela Martini, the famous critic and essayist. The dates of the 32nd edition of the event are always held on the last days of November. In the past this was criticized for being too close to the feast of the Immaculate Conception. However, it remains the same time of this festival, which has turned to experimentation and the new languages of cinema. There is also an homage to the past. In fact, it is confirmed that this retrospective will be dedicated to Giulio Questi, one of the most eccentric and elusive Italian filmmakers of all time. The famous partisan had the honor of playing in “La Dolce Vita” by Federico Fellini. torinofilmfest.org

CITY GUIDE PERSONA

A GOOD RELATION Fashion & Beauty chats with the President of the Italy-Russia Chamber of Commerce, a partner of our magazine and the main institution of reference for the enterprises between the two countries INTERVIEW: Valerio VENTURI

Mr. Alessandrello, what is the story of the ItalianRussian Chamber of Commerce (Ccir)?

We began with one thing as our premise: there have always been relations between the two countries. With the Interchange, from the time of the tsars, and we continue to walk in the footsteps of this path. The chamber of commerce, which is 50 years old, was founded in ‘64, it was the first to be realized between Russia and a Western country.

ROSARIO ALESSANDRELLO Engineer, former business executive, and former vice president of Confindustria (Italian Industrial Confederation), he is now the president of the CCIR and leader of other institutions. He has been awarded the “Knight of Work” of Italy, and was also awarded the “Order of Friendship” by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

TIPS FROM ROSARIO ALESSANDRELLO 1. I SUGGEST TO VISIT TO THE MILAN OF LEONARDO DA VINCI, an artist that foreigners love very much.

2. SURELY IT IS WORTH VISITING THE MUSEUM AMBROSIANO, one of

be discovered. It’s not the tourist town par excellence, like Rome and Florence, but it is a perfect mix for the “accidental tourist” who explores after the business meetings are finished.

Leonardo da Vinci’s sketches

You’re also the President of the ItalianRussian Foundation. Can you talk about this?

Università Bocconi

When the USSR broke up the Chamber almost closed. I got in the game to keep it standing, to find new partners, private, in the new Russia. In one morning everything changed, but in 1995, with the new Russian leadership, we came up with the new Chamber of Commerce, the only one of its kind owned by both countries. So, it is an ancient relation....

Russia passed by the tsars to socialism, Stalinism, the end of Stalin, postsocialism, and the dissolution of the Union. Here there was the monarchy, wars, then the Republic. In spite of the changes, exchanges have always been very intense. Cold War or not, we have always had relationships.

The Foundation was born after the election of Putin. He made his first visit to Italy in Milan to speak to the business men. He came to the Palazzo Marino and there, when the Mayor Albertini asked what could be done to promote relations between the two countries, Putin said that I was a friend here, “Mr. Alessandrello, and I think he can help for the cooperation with the new Russia.” So, it was the idea of creating a cultural foundation that is regaining the history of the cultural exchange, Piccolo Teatro and La Scala, between the two countries, especially considering Milan. So, we “cover” all the topics: economic, cultural, social and inter-religious. Our patron saint, Ambrosio, is much celebrated in Russia. In 2001, the Foundation was inaugurated by the Russian Foreign Ministry. What does it mean, Milan is for Russians and foreigners?

When they want to do business or shopping they come here and discover a beautiful city. We do not realize it, but Milan is the second largest tourist city in Italy. It offers culture and shopping, B2B meetings, all members of the Russian region’s first leg is in Milan; it is the gate of Italy.

This year celebrates 50 years of the CCIR. What events are you planning?

We did the jubilee in Moscow and then the next year, during the Expo, we will definitely do something important. There are always cyclic appointments realized by the CCIR (ccir.it) and the Foundation. You can see the schedule on our site. (fondazione-italiarussia.it)

Accademia of Brera

What does the Expo 2015 mean for foreign countries?

There is interest in the Expo. Russia has the second largest space, many important people will come here.

Now, who is represented by ? Is there a part for fashion?

200 Italian companies, and 150 from Russia. Fashion is important, and it is represented by Mario Boselli, president of the Chamber of Fashion. What are the commercial exchanges?

It is complementarity between the two countries. Even in 2013, 19% of products in Russia were from Russia; the rest were imported, 66% from the EU, and Italy is the 2nd largest exporting country. We are the first buyers, of oil and gas, and this means we have tight relations. Why are you in Milan?

Because in Milan there is an important business community. The relationships have always been with the big Italian industrial groups that are based in Milan.

PERSONA INTERVIEW

T

he daughter of the singer and director Serge Gainsbourg and the actress and the singer Jane Birkin was destined to be in the art world. She produced several solo albums, and designed a clothing line, but cinema has remained her main passion. Her last two films were screened at the Venice Film Festival. The audience saw the director’s cut of the scandalous Lars von Trier’s «Nymphomaniac»; and the premiere of the French drama «Three hearts»: the story of a man who simultaneously falls in love with two women, unaware that they are sisters.

“Three Hearts” directed by Benoît Jacquot was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 71st Venice International Film Festival. But the critics called it one of the worst in the programme... I think it was just not understood. How would you describe it? As something very deep and intimate, in the best tradition of French drama. Some people say it’s “too aristocratic» because of the way the life of the lead characters is portrayed. ...If «aristocratic» refers to the story of the family that lives in the provinces and their lifestyle then I would probably agree with this opinion. Which book can you compare this film with? I think with works of Borges in the way that the heroines’ lives are interlaced; with the love games in Cortazar’s books; and perhaps with the oeuvre of Henry James because there is always understatement between his characters. Have you ever fallen in love with two men at the same time? Maybe, when I was young, unconsciously.

FASHIONANDBEAUTY . IT

Do you ever get a feeling that it’s the first time that you have ever been to the film set? Everything happens for the first time. With Lars von Trier I felt like a first-timer, so vulnerable and completely out of place, even though it was the third time I had worked with him. During the “Nymphomaniac” auditions in Copenhagen I thought I didn’t manage to deliver the essence of the heroine and express her emotions. What makes you feel uncomfortable about the films “Nymphomaniac” and “Melancholia” - naked scenes or the viewers’ perception of the characters?

Charlotte Gainsbourg at the Venice Film Festival 2014

I don’t know. It’s a good question. Anyway I don’t feel ashamed being naked in a scene. It’s useless to feel shame about movies containing sex.

What do you think makes a film real and successful? Cast: if the actors can make the audience believe in everything that happens on-screen. It works both for comedies and dramas. Who you can name as the new faces of French cinema? The first name that comes to mind is Pierre Niney. He is a great young theatre and movie actor. I believe in Melanie Thierry because she had a few successful films, two of them directed by Italians by the way. Melanie is beautiful, a bit dishevelled, eccentric, and fun. I also like Clèment Mètayer. He is only 23 years old but knows good music, politics, history of the costumes, and the 70s. It feels like he lived in that decade! Let’s talk about fashion. What is Charlotte Gainsbourg’s style? ...It’s a style between New York and Shanghai.

What other styles do you like? So called «New Gipsy», though it wouldn’t fit me. It is a gypsy style of travellers that respect the environment and live in harmony with nature. Their clothes are bright and full of crazy patterns. It’s not just the clothes, it’s symbols too.

and a low neckline straight away. In terms of the make-up it was cold and natural.

What items would you chose to make up that look? I would take layered Rochas skirts, something extravagant from Vivienne Westwood, a mantle from Chloe, coloured shawls, and Etro and Kenzo t-shirts.

How would you describe your style in brief? I think, it’s simple, natural and casual.

I think it’s very inspirational... I guess it is because I have recently read «The keeper of the light» by Anita Nair. It is a vivid and epic adventure of the Somali merchants in India in the 17th century. He went along all of the Great Silk Road. He saw diamond mines and survived a few sandstorms. What can you tell about the outfit you were wearing on the Venice Film Festival red carpet? I wanted to create a rock look. I liked Anthony Vaccarello’s short one-sleeved leather dress

Who is your fashion icon? I don’t have one. I have always adored different looks.

You have designed a capsule collection for the brand Current/Elliott. Tell us more about it. I took a few simple garments and accessories, looked at their essence differently and choice of fabrics. T-shirts and sweaters became incredibly soft, especially when you pair them. Denim became even more functional, and the shirts’ fits are now manlier. Which role would you like to play? Actually I haven’t thought of it for a very long time, and haven’t asked myself this question. You don’t need to stress yourself too much. Every time I am offered a role, I just try to do my best, and I think I have managed to perform at the top level. FASHIONANDBEAUTY . IT

ON THE FRINGES Forget about the roaring and rebellious Twenties and the hippies of the Seventies, fringes are back but in a new way. They’re forward and versatile in different ways and materials; leathers and tassels are just two of the stand outs so far. Whether they’re on clothes, bags, shoes or pants, it doesn’t matter, the important thing is that is covered by fringes.

The news that fashionable shoes are going to be comfortable in the coming season will probably make quite few of the female population very happy. Lovers of high heels can feel the ground beneath their feet again, taking a confident step due to the steady thick heel and a hidden platform.

9 Things That Inspire Me In November

The sky is overcast, leaves fall upon the ground and the weather is fluctuating. Autumn is a mid-season, which prepares us as the cold winter approaches. In fashion it is necessary to mix, to stir and to blend together colors and materials, rationality and instincts, fabrics and styles for a season which oscillates between simplicity and extravagance. The only important thing is knowing how to pull the right elements together, adding your own instinctive part, and the rest will come with the desire to experiment and express ourselves. 2. FASHION T REND

ll designers look into the past to get inspired and create for the future. Every season we see various influences taken from the previous decades and reinterpreted in a fresh, modern way. As one of the periods that brought many exciting changes, the 60’s are one of the most fun, vivid, daring, revolutionary and memorable decades which still influences modern day dressing so much. Dipping into that infinite source of inspiration, many big brands brought that mood back to life for the fall and winter seasons of 2014/15.

Swinging its way onto the runways, the 60’s trend was seen with all the biggest brands in Paris and Milan. Influences were different and some designers opted for prints, while the others went for cuts and silhouettes. What most of them had in common was the iconic shift dress that has that flattering A-line shape and shows off your legs. Gucci’s Frida Gannini did it in soft pastel shades of creamy leather, Saint Laurent’s Hedi Slimane went for his usual edgier black look, while the Valentino brand stayed true to the feminine, dreamy aesthetic that is so recognizable for this fashion house. Louis Vuitton wasn’t immune either, presenting their vision of a modern 60’s girl.

While the supermodels walked down the catwalk in Gucci, it wasn’t hard imagining Jane Birkin or Twiggy wearing most of those outfits. Taking a step back from her usual glamorous and dark evening wear, Frida showed a more wearable everyday look for a modern Gucci girl. And that girl was a modern 60’s muse, mixing textures, fabrics and cuts. The retro vibe was noticeable in the A-line shapes, coats, dresses and boots.

THE NEW 60’S Looking into one of the most exciting fashion decades, designers brought back the spirit of the 60’s for the fall/winter 2014/15 season. Look for your inner Twiggy and channel a retro mood TEXT: Ivona JOSIPOVIC, PHOTO: courtesy of press offices

From the school girl outfits done with short skirts and knee length boys, Hedi Slimane showed us his version of the sixties with his signature rock and roll attitude. From shapes, prints and lengths, everything revived the retro look in a modern way. Metallic shades and shiny fabrics that were used just as parts of outfits and details at Gucci, were here used for the whole piece, styling it with black items and leather jackets gave it a contemporary edge. The Valentino show was rich with optical psychedelic prints that remained true to their playful but feminine aesthetic. Polka dots, mini skirts, A-line cuts and knee high boots would put Mary Quant to envy. As the show went on, the mood went back to the

PROENZA SCHOULER

One of the most anticipated shows for the season was Nicolas Ghesquiere’s debut for Louis Vuitton. The intriguingly calm collection paid attention to the details instead of loud single pieces. Very wearable items gave a nod to the 60’s with boxy double-face little coats, swingy skirts and vinyl-effect Chelsea boots. Dries van Noten just flirted with the idea of the retro times by mixing in some optical prints that were very popular back in the

days. Incorporating them with his quite feminine pieces gave them an edge and certainly entertained our eyes as the show went on. Prada just gently touched on this influence with some geometric prints and mixed it all with the arts and social commentary that Miuccia is admired for. The sister brand Miu Miu indulged more in this feeling with shiny fabrics and shift dresses. Karl Lagerfeld didn’t resist either, but got inspired by pop art and the iconic Andy Warhol. He even went onto the stage that the show built into the now famous Chanel supermarket. Bringing humor and wit while intriguing the public has been his forte. Between all the Chanel tweeds there were a few prints that gave us a taste of Karl’s 60’s. FASHIONANDBEAUTY . IT

clectic, nonconformist, rebellious - these are the words that best describe the works of the dynamic Dsquared2 duo. 20 years ago, in 1994, twins Dean and Dan founded a brand that has become famous all over the world. We tried to f ind out the secret of their success.

Has there ever been a moment when you wanted to give up and do something else? Never! Our passion for fashion has always been very strong, we could have never imagined ourselves in anything else. We belong to the fashion world. How would you describe the Dsquared2 universe? Very simple: born in Canada, living in London and made in Italy! Our style emerged in Canada, but at the same time it reflects English trends, and ageold Italian tailor traditions. This blend has defined the Dsquared2 brand path. Do you always agree with each other, or are there moments of misunderstanding? If there is a disagreement, we try to f ind

FALL/WINTER 2014

Dsquared2 is a fashion empire with boutiques around the globe: in Milan, Paris, Tokyo, Dubai. How did you get into fashion? Why did you decide to become designers? We have always been passionate about fashion. When we were kids, we created outf its for our sisters, and advised them about what to wear. We had a lot of fun. That feeling of happiness made us think that it would be great to create something of our own. In the course of time the plans became reality, and eventually we have become who we are now.

a common ground, and if we can’t we just take up another idea that we both like.

Where do you f ind inspiration? Everywhere where there are positive vibrations. It can be a color, a song, a person, often, our trips. We are very curious, so every little detail, a mental image or an emotion can become a starting point for a new creation. You have co-operated with such brands as Ports, Versace, and

Diesel. Which of these alliances has inf luenced you the most? All of them! Every one of these collaborative projects has taught us something, and helped us to grow professionally. You always put on a real show on the catwalks. Your fashion shows are saucy and creative. What part does marketing play in your job? All our fashion shows are the products of our imagination and intuition. We prepare the show from the beginning to the end ourselves. We want to leave an imprint >

FASHION PERSONA on everything, whether it is a dress or the production design. All aspects of the show must represent our vision and our soul. We love our work and we want people to see and feel it! The marketing component in this case does not interest us much; obviously it can’t be underestimated, but we prefer to follow our feelings and intuition rather than marketing strategies.

Dsquared2 continues to expand. Apart from the clothing brand you have a perfume line, and recently you have opened a restaurant Ceresio 7 that has already become one of the most fashionable places in Milan. How do you do that? We have a very strong connection between each other, and we enjoy working together. We love what we do, and that pushes us to make new discoveries all the time. We constantly challenge ourselves. Yes, we have achieved a lot, but everyday we have new ideas that we try to bring to life. This is the beauty of our job.

WE HAVE ACHIEVED A LOT, BUT EVERYDAY WE HAVE NEW IDEAS THAT WE TRY TO BRING TO LIFE. THIS IS THE BEAUTY OF OUR JOB Is that true that you only wear your brand’s clothes? Of course! We like to match casual Dsquared2 items with the elegant ones. We prefer bright colors and unusual ornaments. And accessories, of course. It’s them that make the look unique. By dressing ourselves we underline our personality.

In our f irst collections we mixed casual with classic a lot. Later on we started creating a more formal style, but the clothes remained playful and eccentric. Today a Dsquared2 man is mature, f lexible, responsible and elegant, and he is a cosmopolite. The delicate taste distinguishes him.

You presented your first men’s collection in 1994. How has your perception of men’s fashion changed since?

How would you describe Dsquared2 women’s looks? She is conf ident, strong, and brave. She knows exactly what to wear and where to wear it. She likes daring accessories that make her look different. She wears heels with incredible ease. Dsquared2 woman is charismatic, she likes to solve hard issues, and she does it in style.

In 1983 you left Toronto to study in New York at Parsons The New School of Design. What is your best memory of that period of time? I have one vivid memory: it was the very first day of school. Our Professor walked into the classroom and said: “If you don’t breath fashion, you can leave the school right now!”. That’s when we realized that we are in the right place. We really breathed fashion!

You were born in Canada, live in London and work in Italy where do you feel yourself at home? We have strong ties with Toronto, London and Milan. These cities are so different, and each of them gave us a lot. Apart from work, where do you have differences? At work we normally complement each other, as well as in other areas of life. We both love traveling, sports, and even more to spend time with the families and friends. But it doesn’t mean we are as like as two peas in a pod. Thank God, no! Otherwise we would have been bored (laughing)!

Madonna, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Michael Buble - it’s just a short list of celebrities that worship your clothes. What role does music play in your work? Music is always with us, it accompanies us during the most important moments of our lives, including our work.

FALL/WINTER 2014

What is the difference between creating on-stage dresses and normal collections? Normal clothes are not supposed to be just impressive, they should be suitable for everyday use. I think this is the biggest difference.

Can you name each other’s best features? Dean: Dan is very sensible and caring. Dan: Dean is creative and sparkling! Diana Vreeland once said: “There is no beauty if there is no emotion”. What gives you emotions on the brink of turning 50? Our ability to feel all kinds of emotions about small things. What can be more fascinating?

he most awaited edition of Fashion Week has just passed and the shows on the catwalks have transformed the Italian capital into a bustle of models and fashion bloggers, journalists and photographers. Here the designers tell us the styles that will be, and this time, from looking at the past. Many are, in fact, the collections that have preferred to recover and reinterpret the Seventies; a choice that has surprised the foreign press in search for new styles and not interested in vintage.

Yet the creations of the designers have once again scored a point in favor of Italian style, representing the era in dozens of different styles and imagery. Fashion&Beauty followed the catwalks

and chose the most beautiful just for you. Starting with Fendi. With their glamorous collection Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Venturini marked most of the trends that will dictate the Italian haute couture fashion this summer: luxury, beauty and elegance. A collection that surprises for the choice of materials and for the multiplication of transparency: organza skirts in shades of delicate pale pink and aquamarine, alternate with tissue more rigid, almost plastic, capable of enhancing solid colors and metallic ref lections. The unforgettable short dresses, with an ultra-feminine bustier, and the iconic accessories (glasses especially), are an accent of elegance that makes every Fendi fashion show unique. An hommage to Optical Art for Fausto Puglisi, who pulled out his obsession with ancient Rome, clear shapes and solids, and a love for luxury. The dresses are in bright colors of orange, lemon yellow, and red cyclamen; with fabrics and solid bodied designs that are soft and shaped by tailoring. They are enriched with precious stones and Swarovski crystals, gold and bronze inserts. A nod to the Sixties and Seventies, especially in the fully metallic leather armor clothing. And perhaps the most reported and affectionate tribute to a past vintage hippie f lavor is made by Alberta Ferretti, who rediscovers tunics and fringes, embroidery and f lowers, alternating with vintage fabrics embellished tulle, lace and chiffon. The silhouettes are soft and snug, with short day dresses that aren’t too colorful but declined in shades of pink, blue and beige. Never so vintage is the collection of Max Mara, who closes our reportage. Woven floral prints, maxi skirts covered by flowers, and long dresses that are enveloping comprise the selection. The important dictate about accessories is no sandals this spring, but boots, the more nostalgic homage to the fabulous Seventies. FASHIONANDBEAUTY . IT

MONA LISA’S DESCENDANTS

S

trozzi is one of the oldest and most powerful Florentine families. Some time ago, the Strozzis played an important role in the political life of Italy, and became de facto rulers of the region. Many famous commanders, men of science and politicians belonged to the clan. Palla Strozzi, the scientist and diplomat, donated his huge fortune to the development of Florentine culture. Filippo Strozzi the Elder began the building of the family palace, the Palazzo Strozzi, that today is a Florence museum. To explain the power of the family, it is enough to mention that their secretary was Niccolo Machiavelli; and Lisa Gherardini, who belonged to the dynasty, was the subject of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

The modern history of the family, remarkably, is connected to Russia. The lawyer Girolamo Strozzi, Mona Lisa’s fourteenth generation descendant, married Irina, a daughter of the f irst Russian immigrants to Paris. The couple have two daughters - Natalia and Irina. They both speak perfect Russian and adore Russian culture. I had a chance to witness that when I was unexpectedly invited to the historic Strozzi villa. That morning, I was walking along Ponte Vecchio, admiring Florence’s architecture. The city was slowly waking up; the shops’ owners were opening their doors and preparing for a new day. I was feeling particularly elated and happy as I was going to church. The labyrinth of narrow, paved streets took me to the Russian Orthodox church, where the choir were singing wonderfully, their angelic voices filling the worshippers’ hearts with grace. During the service I saw a familiar face - it was Irina Strozzi praying on the other side of the church. She was with her daughters, and one of them was singing in the choir. I don’t believe in accidents: everything in life happens for a reason. In an hour we were heading to San Gimignano as I was invited to lunch at the Strozzi’s house. There was a laden table waiting for us in the living room, and an all-Russian menu. Irina Strozzi loves to receive guests. Tony Blair, Mstislav Rostropovich, Rudolf Nurieyev and other famous cultural luminaries and politicians have visited the house. After lunch, Irina and Natalia invited me for a walk in their delightful garden. I

breathed in the scent of century-old pine trees and admired the beautiful views of the Tuscan valleys spread at the foot of the villa. For a day, I learned more of the history of such an amazing noble clan; and now, whenever I come to Tuscany, I feel as if I was the guest of this warm family that has made such a contribution to the culture and history of the region.

it up a bit. Or I like to be both, because my personality is not only one person.

Have you heard about Natasha Slater in the coolest Milan nightclub, at Dolce&Gabbana’s private shows, or from the wide coverage of street style? In an exclusive interview, she shares with us her passion for work, fashion and challenges

What is your approach to a wardrobe? I usually choose one piece that I know is strong. I usually don’t wear a lot of accessories, that’s mainly because I lose accessories all the time. I have really bad luck with jewellery. So I just tend not to wear it very often, because every time I buy a piece of jewellery I wear it a couple of times and then it just disappears, which is quite annoying.

Your personal style? I’ve always loved fashion. I’ve always looked for interesting brands because I like to change my style quite often, but the thing that is consistent is that I’m always looking for something eclectic, a statement piece or something a bit different from ordinary. But I like to take references: sometimes I like to play with a classic style, or sometimes I like to do a more rock’n’roll style. I like to change. Your favourite brands? Right now the designers that I really like are Cedric Charlier, I really like Sacai, Arthur Arbesser, Fausto Pugliesi, Philip Lim, I love Alexander Wang, Balenciaga. What inspires you to choose an inf luence, a style, a mood? What inspires me is the constant search for new talent. I’ve always been interested in supporting new talent, I’ve always been interested in discovering new talent and that can come from fashion or music or

Do you have some favourite places in Milan for fashion, beauty…? If I need to do my hair I go to Toni&Guy in via Vincenzo Monti. When it comes to make up I buy MAC, I buy NARS. I keep my skin and care routine very simple. I use dr. brandt skincare, and I try to take vitamins and I’m trying to be healthy. The only thing I can’t give up is alcohol. the creative world. I like to wear clothes by people who have dared to be different and like to be creative and not just go with one specif ic type of look. How do you search for these designers? Now I’m using internet a lot for everything. I suppose because I grew up in the 80’s and in the 90’s I’ve got a lot of very strong references already about what I like, which is associated with music that I like, and the type of woman and person I want to be and how I like to think. So sometimes I really know what I’m looking for. I’m really inspired by the London style and I think that’s where street style comes from to be honest with you. I think it really comes from a London way of dressing. I will sometimes look at blogs, at street style, I go to matches.com, I go to thecorner.com, I’ll go to see Viale Piave, I’ll go to London, to Dover Street Market. I like designers who dress women in a way that is unexpected for women to dress. Not just sexy, gorgeous, cute; I also like that; but I like it when you can shake

FASHION WARDROBE of their outlook on life, so I can be really good friends with a 21-year-old and have fun and have really good friend who’s 60. I don’t really care. What do you like about living in Milan? I like the lifestyle, the high quality of life. I like the fact that it’s so familiar now, you know, I’ve been here for almost 30 years. I guess I like the challenge of it, there must be some sadistic and masochistic side of me, otherwise I would have left and gone somewhere else. I could probably have made a lot of things quicker in other places than here. Besides, you know that you’re not going to f it completely in this Italian way of life, so you don’t even bother, you just create your own thing, you create your own world. What do I like about Milan? I love my life here, but no one said it couldn’t change sometimes.

I DON’T REALLY LIKE TO SAY NO TO THINGS, I’M A YES PERSON. IF PEOPLE SAY TO ME “NO, IT IS NOT POSSIBLE,” I WILL JUST CHALLENGE THEM TO SAY YES I haven’t eaten meat in 25 years I don’t eat dairy products, I try to avoid gluten, I eat fruit and mainly a vegan diet. I keep myself healthy with a diet like that so I try to exercise as much as possible. I try to exercise every day and drink a lot of water. Which projects take up most of your time right now? Projects that take most of my time are the main 3 things I work on. One is working as a consultant for Dolce&Gabbana, another one is a recent consultancy for the Starworks group which is a very big PR agency in New York, London and Los Angeles, and now we’re beginning to work together, which is very exciting, and which will become a bigger part of my life. The other one is Punks Wear Prada, my nightclub, which is a bit unusual for someone who works in my industry, but I’m very passionate about it. You know, I’ve been very fortunate in my life. I don’t always go and look for things, a lot of things come to me. I don’t really like to say no to things, I’m a yes person. If people say to me “no, it is not possible,” I will just challenge them to say yes. I like to work in the fashion industry, in communications, and music.

What do you love most about your work? Communicating, meeting people, having the opportunity to share creative ideas and to see things unfold, working in a group of people, starting with an idea and then it turns into something bigger. I love to see a result of success, there is a lot of satisfaction in that. I don’t like it when it’s too easy. This October you are turning forty. What does this mean for you? This is def initely a new challenge for me. In the last 6 months I went through a bit of strange crisis about turning 40 and now I’m looking out for new opportunities to make my mark. You can’t go back, anyway, so you have to move forward. Most of what I’ve been doing is breaking down the stereotypes, like “you can’t do that because you’re forty” or making these silly statements or “you’re too old” or “you are too this”. Also the older I get, the more I can use my knowledge, but I can’t do that with my own vision. I have to accept that I need to listen to other people and I need to learn. I’ve always found myself with people of different age groups, and I never judge people on their age, but more

In the past she worked as a communications consultant at the National Chamber of Italian Fashion, for the events of White Milan and for a special project for Altaroma, as well as artistic director of the Italian Fashion Week in Dallas (USA). She is a professor at the Fashion and Costume Academy in Rome. She has written many books and, for the television channel Rai Uno, the program “Botteghe di moda”.

Tonino is the owner of one of the most famous multi-brand shops in Southern Italy. Apart from the women’s and men’s collection here you can also find a children’s fashion line. The carefully chosen items from Italian fashion designers are not the only reason to visit Tonino, the amazing shop windows, decorated by Asselta himself, are worth the trip. “The look I recommend for autumn and winter 2014/15 combines two big names in the international fashion world: Valentino and Emanuel Ungaro, both of whom have Italian heritage. In fact, Ungaro, who is also the founder of Avenue Montaigne, is of Italian descent, to be specific, from Puglia.

The story of the Cuccuini brand started back in the 60s, but Gino himself came to the family business in the mid 90s. He took the company to a new level by attracting international clients. “We are kind of a magic box for the buyers. They see the latest trends at first glance, but if they look around more they will definitely find something timeless”, says Gino. “When I was creating the look for Fashion & Beauty first of all I was thinking about a woman that likes a sophisticated, elegant style. I would suggest a shirt with trousers from Tom Brown with an amazing Alexander Wang coat. I prefer unisex shoes – I think one of the classic models of Church’s would look great. We can finish the look with the little purse from Pierre Hardy.”

of brands to the exclusive pieces of the interior. Franz Kraler looks more like a cosy sitting room where you can chitchat with old friends rather than a shop. For Signora Kraler it was important to create a warm, welcoming ambience. Here is what Daniela advises us to wear this winter: “I like women with a temper, as I am one of them. An oversized sheepskin coat with a long Prada fur will look good in the new season. You could wear a Givenchy print dress under it. To make it stand out chose very thick tights from Saint Laurent and the shoes from the same brand; for example, the Mary Jane model. Red patent leather shoes will bring sexuality into the look. And, as a f inishing touch the black Moschino perforated bag.”

GIORDANO OLLARI

(O’ boutiques in Parma and Reggio Emilia)

“First of all, every shop should be a place where you can relax and forget about problems. Going to a boutique should be a happy occasion for the client”, says Giordano Ollari, owner of the chain with the short name of O’. Talking to Fashion & Beauty the buyer decided to even the balance and create a winter look for men and not for women. “I choose a man’s outfit composed of Prada fur and shoes, Dsquared2 trousers and a Saint Laurent shirt. The man I see for this season is an introspective man who comes from the avant-garde theater world where the clothes speak, recalling a sense of overwhelming preserving elegance.” FASHIONANDBEAUTY . he crispy autumn weather has arrived and with it comes the family get-togethers, mugs of hot cocoa, and finding secret hiding places for all the holiday presents. Even though it’s cold outside there’s plenty of opportunity to keep our little ones super cute and stylish as they rush off to catch the school bus in the morning or are bundling up to play in the first flurries of snow. Just because we’re in the midst of the school season doesn’t mean that everyday fashion has to be boring. Actually, it’s a great time to liven things up! The principals of style have been doing their homework and have prepared a abundance of cheerful options. Their experiments in fashion are sure to score top marks from you and smiles from your little darlings. The first thing to remember this season is it’s all about color. No, not the primary colors, but the trend setting shades. Indigo, light and dark grays, pink, violet and bright, happy reds; this color palette is the backdrop for some fun textures and prints that are prevalent throughout most of the collections for boys and girls. Dolce & Gabbana took a page out of a fairytale book and brought to life whimsical attire for our little ones. The bold prints are from an enchanted garden of richly colored florals, fruits, and mosaic tile designs that can be found on everything from headbands to ballet flats. These are joined by the charming wildlife of bunnies, fawns, foxes, and birds, and we suspect they may be the very ones Snow White encountered in her adventures. Of course, every princess will find her prince and here again Dolce & Gabbana hit the target with monochromatic King Arthur prints on jumpers and fur trimmed

Top off the look with a flat cap, knit scarf, puffer vest, and leather high-tops for the chilly days, with pops of forest green and red for a winning and dapper look. Miss Blumarine kept it classy of course. Soft velvet skirts, dresses, and pants will be an elegant touch to any outfit. Lace and fur trim delicate pieces as glittery shine was used discretely, letting textures and colors do the talking. Any young lady would adore this collection that is classic and feminine. As always, high fashion is in the details, and the smart bows, which can be found on collars, cardigans, dresses and the knee high socks, pair beautifully with either the delicate florals or the vibrant cherry red roses that adorn cardigans and leggins. To accessorize Miss Blumarine shows that headbands, little handbags, cozy scarves, and arm warmers will do the trick. Pair this with a lovely ballet flat,

Sergio Rossi became the Avant-garde artist in shoe design by developing a brand new form of footwear, the Opanca. These are flat sandals with the sole resembling a cut sheet. Becoming an absolute hit, these graceful and almost weightless shoes combine simplicity of design and challenge.

THE LIST OF FAMOUS SHOEMAKERS AND TALENTED DESIGNERS BORN IN ITALY IS NEVER ENDING Ferragamo”; producing shoes, clothes, accessories and perfumery. The Casadei Maison, first appearing in 1958, became known throughout the world due to the ambitions of its founders’, Quinto and Flora Casadei. They managed to turn a small workshop into a desirable fashion brand producing shoes of excellent style and quality. Their fame blazed far beyond Italy. In 1987 Cesare Casadei became the brand’s new creative director and successfully extended the family dynasty, embodying the ideas and experience of his father. Crafts were often handed down in Italy. Thus, Sergio Rossi, descending from a family of shoemakers, learned the basics of shoemaking in his father’s workshop, went to work in Milan and opened his own shop in Bologna in 1960. It all began

with the sole shape design resembling a cut sheet. This model was named Opanca and became widely used by other shoe brands. Shortly after, Sergio’s talent was noticed by many fashion Maisons, but he won international acclaim while working with Gianni Versace. The son followed in his father’s footsteps, but now he works mostly on developing his own brand, Gianvito Rossi. Santoni is another Italian family brand, which has been producing shoes since 1975. From that time the company management has stayed true to its principles – artistic shoe masterpieces are always handmade of high quality leather. The brand’s signature point, hand coloring, lets each pair of shoes be unique in its own way. Now Santoni is ruled by the second generation of their dynasty, Giuseppe Santoni and his sibling Ilenia.

The Rado company was a pioneer in promoting ceramics. They used it as a basic material in watchcase production. Thus, in 1986 the first watches made of ceramic appeared, letting the jewelry world in on the secret of a brand new material. This success encouraged craftsmen to create new collections of gems. Chanel was the first to set its sights on jewelry ceramics. The Maison’s workers made a real revolution in 2000 by releasing the rings and bracelets collection “Ultra” in black and white ceramics with pave settings. Ceramic caught the fancy of Chanel jewelers so quickly that they decided to use it in all upcoming collections. Following the pioneer, several French Maisons paid their tribute to the technological century’s fashion. Guy Laroche launched a line with the self explanatory name “Ceramic”.

A BLAZER SHOULD BE SENSIBLE AND GO BOTH WITH A POLO SHIRT AND A CLASSIC SHIRT Marco Baldassari is certain that there is no need to choose between comfort and ref inement! Eleventy has created a blazer from the new jersey fabric that looks elegant thanks to the unique combination of cashmere and wool. This fall, I have chosen this comfy yet fashionable jersey blazer. Normally, knitted fabric is associated with sports clothing, but this garment is a totally different story. As

a result of mixing cashmere and wool, the blazer looks chic, especially in blue, beige and grey shades. A blazer in these colours is practical, and goes just as well with a polo shirt and sweater as with a classic shirt and a tie for formal meetings. We decided to go the extra mile and use the new jersey when designing the coat that is a perfect match for the blazer. We found inspiration in army archive photos.

CESARE ATTOLINI

MEN’S STYLE SUITS

In the 1930’s Naples was entitled as Italy’s skilled sewing capital. It was here where the refined men of style first appeared, thanks largely to companies like Cesare Attolini, Kiton and Isaia

The Italian likes to say: «If I did not do this work, I would pay to do it.» But Signor Paone has no reason to take extreme measures. His talent met with recognition, first at home and then abroad. There are always several tailors involved in every suit’s tailoring. This system is reminiscent of an orchestra where maestros cannot perform “da solo” - they always have to work together to a common beat. The most popular brand’s model is certainly K 50, because its production takes 50 hours. It’s very tight-knit and extremely difficult to implement, therefore only 50 sets are made per year. Kiton is constantly looking for new talents that are children from 16 to 21, whose life

72

FASHIONANDBEAUTY . IT

long dream is becoming a tailor. Top quality, support of young talent and soulful approach to their customers - here are three basic principles of the company. Signor Paone likes to remind his employees: «When using a phone, you should make love with a client.»

TEXT: Galia MILOVZOROVA, PHOTO: courtesy of press offices

MORE THAN A SUIT

KITON Ciro Paone launched his company in 1968. Tailoring men suits has always been his greatest passion, which is not surprising as he was born to a cloth merchant’s family.

ISAIA In 1920 Enrico Isaia (put the accent on the last letter to sound correct) opened a store of high quality fabrics in Naples, selling textiles to urban tailors. Shortly after he decided to set up a small laboratory next to the shop where the first suits with the Isaia label appeared. In the 50s his factory moved to the province of Naples, settling in the city of tailors called Casalnuovo

where 7,000 of the 14,000 people were engaged in garment making! The main distinguishing feature of the brand’s jackets is the so-called «Neapolitan shoulder». Green hands can get scared seeing the folds of fabric on the top of the sleeve, but there’s no waste. Tailors ruffle the fabric at this point on purpose in order to let a man move freely. Al Pacino and John Travolta are among the celebrity clientele of Isaia. CESARE ATTOLINI Vincenzo Attolini founded his company as early as 1930, immediately provoking a revolution in the men’s fashion world. He was the first to give up on the classical English approach to suit making. The Italian opened a new way to Neapolitan style, which is now synonymous worldwide with elegance. Signor Vincenzo had softened the jacket’s silhouette by rounding its shoulders, made a lighter lining and introduced, unusual for that time, the shape of pockets called “pumps” in Italy. Screen stars like Marcello Mastroianni, Vittorio De Sica and Clark Gable were

among the customers of Attolini’s tailor shop. The King of Italy, Vittorio Emmanuele III, and the Duke of Windsor, the former ruler of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, ordered their suits here as well. The latter was impressed when he came to Naples and saw Vincenzo’s work. Today the company’s staff includes 130 first-class tailors. There is nothing but scissors, threads and needles in the workshops – all suits are handmade, just like 80 years ago. Despite the huge demand, the founder’s son and grandchildren stay true to Neapolitan tradition and have no intention to start mass production. FASHIONANDBEAUTY . IT

Modern and elegant lipstick. Lips are enhanced by a nutritious and natural treatment: incredibly light and extremely bright

BEAUTY SAY IT WITH A GLAMOROUS KISS!

Maybe she is 20, 40 or 60 years old, it doesn’t matter, because she is incredibly chic and excels in the art of seduction “without the slightest effort”. In her purse her weapon of choice for fatal seduction is her KissKiss lipstick. The name is as bewitching as a secret love note. This is the magic wand from which she is inseparable. KissKiss is a story of seduction written by Guerlain in 1994. KissKiss lipstick is not like the others. It is an iconic symbol of love in various degrees. An ode to color, the meeting of great artists, and a prelude to the most beautiful kisses.

LE FALL ACCORDING TO CHANEL

9

The new make-up from the fall collection by Chanel is inspired by a color that evokes delicacy and poetry: rose. The shade is declined in endless variations, creating a palette of intense colors and delicate tones at the same time. We chose for our readers Joues Contraste, a blush which touches your cheeks with a soft innocence. In a delicate rosewood tone, the passionate color evokes the fleeting shadow of restrained emotion.

LIKE AN ARTIST

Dany Sanz, MUFE’s Creative Director, crafted Artist Shadow eyeshadows like a collection of haute couture colors. An amazingly rich palette of intense shades in 5 effects: matte, satiny, metallic, iridescent, and diamond. The range has been entirely renewed in keeping with the brand’s trademark codes: creativity, innovation, rigor, profusion, passion and generosity. Easy application, impeccable hold, instant and precise color effect – this newgeneration range of eyeshadows extends the boundaries of creativity.

ccording to Max Factor “A woman who does not wear lipstick must feel undressed in public.” The mythical inventor of the make-up, at least as we know it today, was not wrong. In fact, please, raise your hand all those who have never worn a lipstick, a lip gloss or a simple lip balm. Anyone? As expected: none.

Worn by the great Elizabeth I and by the actress Sarah Bernhardt, who was the first to use it outside the scenes giving rise to scandal and, of course, gaining an unquestionable success. It was also worn by Cleopatra (who seems to have preferred an iridescent and very dark texture), and by Madame De Pompadour. Lipstick has had mixed fortunes throughout history depending on the country and the time. In England, for example, in the eighteenth century a law allowed the annulment of a marriage if the wife had been wearing cosmetics (and therefore lipstick) before getting married. A century later in France the upper class women were asked to wear make-up, insisting on lipstick, to differentiate themselves from the poorer class, who was reserved to, more by necessity than choice, a more natural make-up. Over the years red lipstick became a strong political symbol, tied to a rebellious femininity, thanks to Elizabeth Arden who asked the suffragettes, then the

96

promoters of a new dimension of women, to wear her lipstick which she distributed herself through the streets during the demonstrations. Now it is celebrated throughout the twentieth century as a note of sensuality perfect for every woman. Most notably of all Marilyn Monroe who, in addition to the famous drop of Chanel No.5 without which she never went to sleep, only wanted her lips covered in a bright red lipstick, like her lips were in a blazing flame. The lipstick was called Lipstick in Flame and was, in fact, signed by Elizabeth Arden. And today? Today, the lipstick is all about red and, at the same time, everything but red. It offers a wide range of nuances and tints; from the Up the Amp by MAC, a full and vivid purple to Mademoiselle by Chanel, a natural pink that is just a little shiny, and Rouge Ecstasy by King George Armani, red and incredibly deep. Another to take note of is the Rouge in Love by Lancôme, which comes in 24 different shades, ranging from pink to plum and through to violet, so you can change it at any hour of the day. The cosmetic companies have flooded the market with hundreds of products, colors, textures and shades. So, how to choose from the selection and what to wear on your lips for the upcoming winter? Find out in the next few pages. We’ve prepared a small collection of the best must-haves that will help you to find your favorite lipstick!

BEAUTY CASE Which lipstick color are we going to choose for this winter? The answer is simple: red! Actually not a classic one, but a red enriched with dark pigments. Therefore, burgundy, plum, purple, and perhaps some deep reds and browns. Or lightened shades of orange and magenta, coral and pink, through to the more clear and nude blush tones. Which ones to choose? Obviously the best, and here they are!

3. ROUGE COCO SHINE INTIME, LÉVRES SCINTILLANTES SONGE, CHANEL

Your smile will come easy, thanks to a bright lipstick or a shining gloss. If you love their lipsticks you can’t help but to fall in love with Rouge Coco Shine Intime, a delicate, almost colorless pink that is opaque and bright on the lips. Just one application makes them more intense and enriched by this delicate nude pink. For those who love lip gloss, however, you can choose a crystal clear shine. Its name is Songe, and it has a lovely pink pearleffect, multi-colored hues, brings together all the colors in the collection and goes with every detail of your make-up.

1. LIPFINITY LIP COLOUR, MAX FACTOR

On their debut, backstage of the fashion show by Victoria Beckham SS14, Pat McGrath, Max Factor’s Global Creative Design Director, created the models’ looks with lips done using the new Lipfinity Lip Colour. Modern and fresh, Lipfinity Lip Colour comes in many shades, all recommended by the famous American make-up artist. Eleven shades of long-lasting, sophisticated and bright colors from a seductive coral red, an elegant gilded bronze to nude shades. This glamorous color palette gives you the freedom to create different looks inspired by the coolest, resilient trends of the season.

4. LE ROUGE ROSE EXTR AVAGANT, GIVENCHY

Givenchy took elegance as the symbol of its style and the extravagance as its inspiration. This fall they offer a small new make-up collection consisting of just two lipsticks. We have chosen the pink for you, perfect for lips who want to be daring. This is an unusual and seductive tint in the palette of darker shades that everyone will wear this winter.

5. EGO & CASHMERE, DIEGO DALLA PALMA

2. DIOR ADDICT FLUID STICK, DIOR

An incredible revolution in makeup, Dior creates Dior Addict Fluid Stick, his first hybrid lipstick. Neither a gloss, lip lacquer or lipstick, Dior Addict Fluid Stick is a ‘product for the lips’ of a different variety. It is a fluid, spectacular and almost impalpable, yet it guarantees the impact of brilliant glossy color and a ‘non-material’ feeling - a veil of sensational comfort. Here for you are the shades of Mona Lisette, Minuit and Intrigue.

100

FASHIONANDBEAUTY . IT

A dark, deep and glamorous touch of style, Ego is a numbered and limited edition black lipstick. Unique in color and in its light and creamy texture. Once applied the effect is luminous, seductive and unusual. It plays with transparency upon application and gives the lips character and a fascinating vintage effect. But, if you prefer a more classic effect on your lips Diego Dalla Palma offers you the best red ever, with a cashmere texture, perfect application control and a matte result without drying the lips.

It is a lie only for those who do not believe in it. Beauty is part of us, our world and our environment, and every face and every body has its own kind of special, unique beauty. I like to think that beauty is like a work of art. Also, I believe, it is a thing to take care of in order to remain perfect as long as possible. Beauty seems to be ageless. Is there a kind of beauty that goes beyond time and age?

Beauty is always ageless, and often reveals itself through the details; a well-groomed face with transparent skin, rosy cheeks, and hands with a perfect manicure. For many, it is a boring routine. I believe instead that it is an important detail. To constantly care for ourselves, this is what also makes us beautiful at any age. Let’s talk about products. What should we choose for autumn and winter? What must we remember for our beauty case?

Summer’s end brings the need to rejuvenate the skin from the long exposure to the sun. So, go ahead with the nutritious masks, restorative strategies and everything in our cosmetics that could help our skin to be more healthy.

Make-up also helps us to maintain the tan we conquered during the summer, thanks to the moisturizing treatments enriched with a light veil of color. They make skin more luminous and uniform. In most products we can also find vitamins and natural extracts to protect and enhance the skin’s texture. Don’t forget a volumizing mascara to have a look that’s sexy and deep, and a sheer lipstick that hydrates the lips giving them that certain ”something” that’s sensual and irresistible. For the winter, however, let yourself be seduced by next season’s fashion trends and bet everything on lips and eyes. Cosmetics begin to be masculine, too. Do you have some beauty tips for the gentlemen in our audience?

For instance, take care of your daily beauty routine, like using a good cleanser to use in the shower with the help of an exfoliant on alternate days. Then a moisturizer, many are replacing the aftershave lotion, and a product for the eye area. For the most insecure, a touch of concealer to hide little imperfections. Sometimes beauty is an attitude. What, in your opinion, is the best gesture of beauty?

Love yourself. Absolutely.

You mentioned a lot of collaborations with Italy...

It’s true! The collaboration with this country is very important. For example, it’s been 9 years since we founded «The Russian Cultural Mission» in Venice and Milan. As part of it we opened the Centre of Russian Culture Studies at the Ca Foscari University. We have held the Festival of Russian Arts in Rome for the past 10 years. It covers a wide cultural range: ballet, cinema, music, folklore,

folkcraft. Italians can get to know more about our country through this festival. One of the easiest and most accessible ways to know the other country’s culture is through its cinema. What role do Russian film screenings play?

We show Russian movies in different Italian regions very often. We also have round tables with Russian directors. This year, Mosfilm celebrates its 90th anniversary; hence we decided to

We have an active relationship with other countries: for example we organize the Festival of Russian Arts in Cannes. We also work with Italy a lot. From our Russian projects I would like to highlight «The Mobile Arts Academy». We set up creative schools in different regions, where talented musicians and artists from all over Russia teach workshops, perform concerts and put on exhibitions. And the best students of the «Mobile academy» then participate in international youth festivals in Italy, Germany and France. A NEW MICHELANGELO

M

ichelangelo Galliani studied art conservation in Florence and then sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, worldfamous for its marble quarries. Now he teaches rock properties at the Academy in Urbino. In his work Galliani mainly uses Carrara marble and lead. It seems like metal and stone have nothing in common, but for Signor Michelangelo they are parts of the whole. According to the sculptor, he is not trying to change the nature of these materials, but only helps them to “release their own soul.” Lead deteriorates in time, while marble, on the contrary, does not lose its former splendor. Stone is stronger than time, thus than death. Maybe that’s the reason why the maestro holds off completing his creations. He works gradually, making them piece by piece and often at long intervals.

114

FASHIONANDBEAUTY . IT

Galliani worships the talent of the sculptors Jacopo della Quercia, Medardo Rosso and Adolfo Wildt. He draws inspiration from Ancient Greece and the East with its Thai and Burmese statues. The cinema had a special impact on Michelangelo’s work – most notably the iconic movies of “The Elephant Man” by David Lynch, and “The Fly” by David Cronenberg. In his work Galliani pays

much attention to scientific progress, genetic experiments and mutations. His pieces straddle mythology and fantasy. Another issue concerning the sculptor is a gradual fading of personality. According to Galliani, it is very difficult to stay true to yourself and keep up personality in the world where one can clone living creatures and manipulate people. All his thoughts and experiences are reflected in his statues. Marble gets the most incredible forms, springing to life in Michelangelo’s hands, and the stone veins look like scars. The sculptor combines carved marble figures with fragments of raw material, both components are equally valuable to the master. In the words of Galliani, his work is a kind of evolutionary symbol. The image of the statues may change in time and start living their own life apart from the sculptor’s fate.

PHOTO: courtesy of press offices

Michelangelo Galliani is one of the most promising sculptors in contemporary Italy. He works a lot with marble and lead. Each statue has a strong symbolic meaning

past the Marble Mountains, listening to the light distant sounds of the sea, and it doesn’t matter anymore what you were looking for.

When did you start taking interest in sculpture?

I was 15 and studied at the Lyceum of Arts, being lucky enough to meet a great professor, who cultivated my love of art. Or, maybe, he made me discover the things that have always been deep down. Traveling to Greece effected me as well. When I was a child my father took me to see the ancient ruins.

What is it like to be a sculptor in modern Italy?

In recent years sculptors have been able to earn a place in the sun. Like others I went to search for marble like many famous masters from other generations before. I guess I would not be able to do something else. Nevertheless, it’s difficult to make a way in every field these days.

What are the main sources of your inspiration?

It’s everything I see, all of the things around. On the conscious and subconscious level I sift out information that later runs out of control at the most unexpected and bizarre times. For example, many ideas for my sculptures cross my mind while I’m driving. I would say almost all ideas appear like that or at least the best ones. Asking a sculptor about his dearest work is like asking parents about a child they love more than the rest. So, I’ll be careful and recast the question: Which of the statues triggered your strongest emotions while working?

But, you cannot ask what child among the others triggers the strongest emotions of his parents. Every kind of work inspires me in its own way, and even makes me feel butterflies in my stomach sometimes. I do not know why this happens, and I cannot control my reaction. What are the three virtues of a sculptor?

Today it’s hard to say who can be a sculptor as modern technologies in some ways allow almost anyone to become a sculptor. I can only list the things that matter to me - skills, creativity and courage.

Could you move to live abroad?

What are your future plans?

I have two exhibitions in Italy this summer, one of them in Trento, and the other in Corciano, Umbria. I’m also working on a project, but the details are kept confidential. I can only say that it will be called VITRIOL. Everything will be ready by May 2015, and I’m going to sneak as much Carrara marble as possible in the Apuan Alps.

I am very attached to things, perhaps even more than to people. When I talk about things I have in mind some specific emotions, feelings, colors, tastes. I like my studio as it is a place not only for work but also for meditation. Maybe if I moved my studio to a new place ... I think I could get used to life somewhere else. But I’m very picky and I know that I already live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world. In the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow.

Every age has its monuments. If you had to create a monument dedicated to modern Italy, what would it be?

Italy is a very controversial and still amazing country, so I find it hard to invent something that would express its very soul. Let us take a Rubik’s Cube or even better jade beads as a starting point, as they are excellent examples of craftsmanship and wit. All beads are connected with thread. You pick them up and feel that you’ve reached the end - but no, you lose the count and have to start afresh. It’s like traveling a first class train, when you drive

LOVE BRERA BUSINESS TOGETHER

TEXT: Sara BONDANI, PHOTO: courtesy of press offices

Born in the heart of Milan, an original TV project: a dialogue between the protagonists of design and business

M

ilan is known as the capital of design, and it is undisputedly a centre of attraction for businessmen and creatives. It was in this context that the “brainchild” of Francesca Abbati - TV blogger of the portal Syncronia - was born: the “Love Brera Business Together” project. It is a “container”, a TV format created to promote dialogue between internationally renowned companies and professionals; a nice talk show created to encourage interesting relationships and to talk about Made in Italy and haute-couture. All this takes place in the central district of Brera, the heart of architecture and fashion,

and soon the subject of a big redevelopment, in a picturesque location beside Academy of Fine Arts and Via Fiori. This historic district of Milan, whose fame is linked to the world of artists, has been able to retain the charm of its glorious cultural past, and has always been the place to discover the trends of the moment. Brera is the showcase of the excellence that is created here, the place where many projects can be born and consolidated: a perfect place for the philosophy of the new format. It began in mid-2014 - with the participation, among others, of the architect Claudio Nardi and Valerio Venturi of Fashion & Beauty -

and there is a second phase of construction starting in October. Thanks to leading figures in the world of creativity, the talk show of Brera designed to promote successful companies and professionals - enables the audience, directly at the event or via TV on Channel Ada, to discover products and people that have success around the world. Francesca Abbati guides the guests and accompanies them to a confidential meeting. The episodes will be broadcast on Ada, channel 84, a digital television channel completely dedicated to the art of fine living. It’s a TV show which is open to public. Red is common as well, it acts in the opposite way by warming and boosting the energy. There is also a whole area for thermal muds. It is divided into parts with different temperatures and humidity levels,

such drops help to prepare the body for wrapping. The relaxation centre offers some rare treatments as well, such as the Kneipp contrast baths for feet, Daoyin ancient body-mind health enhancing exercises, a spa for hair, and stone therapy – a massage using heated volcanic lava stones. And if you want some privacy you can book a private spa at the Abano Grand Hotel. Restaurant Giotto serves a delicious healthy breakfast specially created

for the start of your spa day. Chefs carefully chose not only the ingredients but the colors of the produce and foods. Every morning menu is characterised by its color. Red colored food consists of natural antioxidants, orange is detoxing, green helps you to relax, white food is to purify and violet is to drain off excess fluids. For dinner chose another hotel restaurant – Pietro d’Abano. Its gourmet cuisine is famous far beyond Abano Terme. All the dishes are made of purely seasonal organic products. “La Grande Carte” menu from the chef Claudio Casarin is made of two parts: the first one changes every day to satisfy the most demanding palates for the guests, while the second one consists of a selection of signature dishes. ALFA ROMEO  REVAMPED Alfa Romeo excites as their newest creation takes to the asphalt

to deliver. Though, it does seem that they couldn’t decide exactly what style of vehicle they wished to create. Should it be a drift racer’s dream, with its graceful pirouette deceptive of its heart-throbbing daredevil desires? A futuristic sculpture with curved contours that arc into the next century? A sleek, chic urban head turning roadster,

see what mechanized magic they would pull out of the little black Modena box. Fortunately, the craftsmen of Alfa Romeo, hard at work concocting their next masterpiece were ready

so couture, so well tailored that its Milanese heritage would be evident to all its admirers? Obviously their only choice was but to cleverly combine all these elements into their latest triumph.

Inspired by the golden age of the automobile industry they reinvented and rejuvenated the 1967, 33 Stradale. Classic car lovers will appreciate the modern interpretation of the body style which is composed of composite, low-density material that is 20% lighter than steel and corrosion resistant. This was taken into

account as the Alfa Romeo 4C’s design foundation was built on impeccable style and speed, as well as weights and measures as the four cornerstones of its creation. Because getting the math just right allows for the unique performance capabilities of its Alfa TCT dry twinclutch transmission which features an innovative Launch Control

lfa Romeo, if you live in Italy you are sure to be familiar with this iconic Italian brand, and rightly so. Being such a landmark, and having garnered acclaim due to their unique engines and designs for more than a century, car enthusiasts the world over looked to Alfa Romeo with hungry eyes to

function, optimizing the 4C’s systems to exploit all the available acceleration. Not to mention the Alfa D.N.A. Selector which allows the driver to choose which of the three settings, Dynamic, Natural and All Weather, is best suited for their current driving style and road conditions, the vehicle adapting to its environment as you view the digital instrument panel with TFT display. It changes configuration to provide you with the information

most pertinent to the specific Alfa D.N.A. setting. The engineered acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and reaching top speeds of 250 km/h from the rear wheel drive is truly exciting. With all that speed accessible from a mere press of the accelerator means that an equally impressive braking system is the logical element in its composition. That was achieved by the self-ventilating perforated

discs with Brembo callipers on the front wheels allowing the 4C to stop from 100 km/h to 0 in only 36 metres. Which means you can enjoy all the velocity and agility the 4C offers knowing that state of the art braking system is on your side. Inside the plush leather interior ensconces you in luxury. The contrasting stitching matches the exterior paint which is available in six shades.

The Alfa Romeo 4C with all of its sporty elegance is a clear example as to why the exotic luxury sports car industry has always been clearly tucked into the palm of the Italian brands. Alfa Romeo is still making the world take notice of their vision of the future 114 years later and with the significant 4C launch the next 114 years are unfolding to be nothing short of breathtaking.

LIFESTYLE BARS

MILANESE APERITIF

The happy hour tradition has long been ingrained in Italian culture, and in the capital of fashion cocktail hour has become an integral part of everyone’s Milanese lifestyle TEXT: Galia MILOVZOROVA, PHOTO: courtesy of press offices

S

ipping a cocktail served with free snacks is a good way for citizens to hold talks with business partners, meet friends, celebrate birthdays and just relax. After a long search, Fashion & Beauty has chosen the three most unique places, famous both for their aperitifs and exclusive design.

Happy Hour starts at 6pm and it is different from the standard aperitif, because in Roialto you get a huge number of various foods, not just a couple slices of cheese and focaccia. The bar is divided into 10 small gastronomic corners, each ruled by a certain chef. The menu offers Italian and French cheeses, cold cuts, raw fish, a mixed grill, polenta, vegetables and fruits. Sometimes oysters are served here as well. The only drawback of the bar is the extremely long line for a snack on Fridays and Saturdays. Therefore, we advise you to choose another quieter day to enjoy an aperitif. Roialto is open from Tuesday to Sunday at 6:00pm-2:00am. ROIALTO

MILANO CAFÉ The place with a straightforward name completely ref lects the essence of Milan. This cafe has up to date furnishings, an enormous space consisting of several halls and strikes with the opulence of interesting details. For example, the walls are covered with river stones, f ixed with a wire cloth. Cozy sofas, paintings, books and f igurines placed all around create an almost home-like ambiance and composed to relax. The life of this cafe is a round bar counter where Italians gather ready to rejuvenate after a long workday in the evening. Aperitif lasts from 6:00pm up to 10:00pm. Cocktails are served with Mediterranean snacks. Milano Café is open from Tuesday to Sunday until 02:00am. VIA PROCACCINI, 37, T EL (+39) 023 4930819, milanocafe.it

THE MENU OFFERS ITALIAN AND FRENCH CHEESES, COLD CUTS, RAW FISH, A MIXED GRILL, POLENTA, VEGETABLES AND FRUITS. SOMETIMES OYSTERS ARE SERVED HERE AS WELL GATTOPARDO One of the most stylish disco bars in Milan, it took up residence in a former church. The club owes its name to the famous movie by Luchino Visconti called “The Leopard” (it. “Gattopardo”). The film is set in Palermo during the Risorgimento. The club’s keeper, Pino Scalise, wanted to recreate the atmosphere of those times. Historical interiors were restored with some glamorous elements added. The central space in the hall is taken up by a huge chandelier, composed of 65,000 crystals. A DJ board is installed in place of the altar, and waiters are liveried. Despite the high class, this spot is open to both VIPs and ordinary guests that have equal rights regardless of their status. The club caught the fancy of Milan’s citizens, and that’s why fashion shows are often held here. Gattopardo’s disco bar is open from 6:00pm to 5:00am. ating and drinking in the Sempione area, near Sempione Park, just after the Arch of Peace, are thousands of opportunities for an aperitif or a dinner in one of the busiest and most beautiful areas of the city.

In the city there are many lovely areas to spend the evening. In addition to the city center there is also the Isola neighborhood, Porta Ticinese, Navigli (the nightlife center), and still Garibaldi and Corso Como as well. The life of Milan in the night begins around 6:00pm, with the “aperitivo. A time to meet friends after work for a chat, drinks and appetizers. Then the evening continues on

in the restaurants and even a disco. Milan is a capital of the worldliness: VIPs, jet set celebrities, sports personalities, starlets, models and yuppies. Here, there are places where you can go just to get noticed or to spend a relaxing evening out for dinner. As we mentioned, the Sempione area, near the Arch of Peace and Sempione Park, offers many places that are frequented by the youthful people of Italy outdoors in the summer, and by managers and professionals who like a trendy location in the winter. In addition to the many places to have a drink, there are excellent restaurants that are famous for the quality of their cuisine.

The Michelin Guide, for example, noted restaurants in zone two that offer excellent quality at reasonable prices, such as: La Cantina di Manuela (via Procaccini 41), Osteria Porta Prima (via Lomazzo 29), and the Unico (viale Achille Papa 30) that boasts a Michelin star is panoramic. The twentieth floor of Tower WJC invites you to come and try the cuisine from chef Felice Lo Basso in a refined level. Even when you are in Italy and you want to have a Japanese meal try sushi restaurants such as White Sushi, Oishii and Bomaki.

Where can you dine in a comfortable and chic place when you are in the Sempione area? At the Aquarius Restaurant, where the chefs serve dishes prepared with fresh ingredients that are of top quality, seasonal, and always cooked to perfection. Each month they present the best seasonal offerings to the table: mushrooms, truffles, mozzarella, fresh fish, etc.. The ingredients are excellent and the dishes are as good as they are beautiful.

This restaurant offers a menu based on f ish. Opened in 1976 by Franco Cavozza, who personally oversees all the details even today, it is a traditional, large, f ine place with nuances of the sea. In addition to the dishes on the menu you can just make a phone call to ask for specialties or special recipes. It’s a f ish lovers paradise!

The Jazz Café is the vision from the collaboration of three friends, united by the common idea to create a new drinking and eating experience. “We take care of the quality but we are fast, and we offer entertainment”. The kitchen offers delicious dishes and the staff are nice. It’s a place where it is easy to feel at home. The menu is extensive and well articulated, with meat, fish and vegetables. The desserts are homemade. FASHIONANDBEAUTY . IT

LIFESTYLE WINES

ORGANIC DELIGHTS

The positive trend of organic and biodynamic practices arrives in the world of wine. Here are a few tips to help you know what to drink and why, along with the different offerings available in the regions of Italy TEXT: Dario VENTURI, PHOTO: courtesy of press offices

G

reen wines are feeding the planet. The spirit of the time is to think green, to recapture the spaces eroded by the entropy of human cultures. Now in the vineyard the time and the rhythm of our ancestral nature has come together to create perfect wines that are organic. And with good prices, too. From the Langhe (Piedmont), to the Val d’Orcia (Tuscany), and to the South (Sicily, Puglia etc...), along with many other regions companies are producing organic and biodynamic wines. These wines are really great. We are many years away from the first organic wines that had a horrible taste. Today, even a wine without sulfites has the quality

136

FASHIONANDBEAUTY . IT

and the flavor of a great bottle. And what was a whim of a few people has now become a habit for everyone. But what are the differences between organic and biodynamic? There are two types of organic listings on wine bottles. Wines can be made from certified organically grown grapes, avoiding any synthetic additives, or - to take it a step further - “organic” wines are made from organically grown grapes, and are also made without any added sulfites (though naturally occurring sulfites will still be present). Biodynamic farming incorporates the idea of a vineyard as an ecosystem, and also accounting for things such as astrological influences and

lunar cycles. A little bit of superstition makes magic in a bottle. The wine “made from biodynamic grapes” means that a vintner used biodynamically grown grapes, but followed a less strict list of rules in winemaking. Sustainability refers to a range of practices that are not only ecologically sound, but also economically viable and socially responsible. But it’s a mistake to think that the ‘traditional’ wines are not healthy enough; added sulfites, for example, used for centuries - since the Romans and before - are few in the wines of good quality. The sulfur dioxide is present in nature and also the fermentation carried out by yeasts, present on the grape skins, can generate sulfites.

This special wine is by Bio Vio, the famous company of biologically sound wines in Bastia d’Albenga, Liguria. The Pigato reserve is very aromatic: “fat”, with the flavors of mandles and honey. A lovely wine, full of elegance. Perfect with seafood and fish soup.

From Monferrato, this Barbera comes from a single vineyard in a natural amphitheater facing south-east. The wine is made with special care and bottled after a few decantings and filtrations to keep the original characteristics of the grape. For pasta, pizza or for an aperitif.

Elected as the best Ligurian wine for its quality/rate ratio by Slow Wine, this is a very interesting Vermentino. Pale yellow with greenish hues and hints of Mediterranean herbs. Suitable to be paired with a salad, stuffed pumpkin flowers, pies, or a consummè. FASHIONANDBEAUTY . IT

The designer Paula Cademartori, in a very short time has conquered the fashion world with her versatile and colorful bags. And no wonder, her collections are so beautiful that they are considered true design objects. Every creation bears the name from a woman whom she admires for her strong personality and unique style, and this “Faye” (from Faye Dunaway) inspired from the art nouveau period has literally conquered us.
