FASHIONCLASH presenteert de ‘Fashion Makes Sense Award’ (FMSA), een terugkerende stimuleringsprijs voor jonge ontwerpers. Het doel van het project is enerzijds talentontwikkeling en ondersteuning van duurzame ontwerpers en anderzijds een breed publiek bewust maken van vraagstukken gerelateerd aan duurzaamheid. FMSA is bedoeld voor de nieuwe generatie, duurzame ontwerpers en labels met vernieuwende ideeën. Deze prijs is bedoeld om veelbelovend talent te stimuleren om na te denken over duurzaamheid en ondersteuning te bieden in het ontwikkelen van een verantwoorde collectie.

FASHIONCLASH presents the ‘Fashion Makes Sense Award’ (FMSA), a returning motivation prize for young designers.

This project aims to develop talent and support sustainable designers on the one hand and raise awareness of sustainability related issues with a larger audience on the other. Na een zeer succesvolle editie van Fashion Makes Sense Award in 2018, is FASHIONCLASH ontzettend trots om dit jaar de 3e Fashion Makes Sense Award te presenteren. Nu duurzaamheid een steeds prominentere positie op de globale agenda aanneemt, is FMSA een nog belangrijker project geworden voor FASHIONCLASH, maar ook voor ontwerpers over de hele wereld en de hoeveelheid aanmeldingen die we hebben ontvangen zeggen genoeg.

After a very successful edition of the Fashion Makes Sense Award in 2018, FASHIONCLASH is very proud to present the 3rd Fashion Makes Sense Award. With sustainability becoming an even more prominent subject on the global agenda, FMSA has become an even more important project for FASHIONCLASH, as well as designers all over the world and the amount of applications we’ve received speak to this.

We have chosen 10 finalists that will present two outfits; one at Cube Design Museum and one in an exhibition during FASHIONCLASH Festival 2019 at the SAM-Decorfabriek. The contestants are in the running for the Jury prize of €2.500,- and the Audience prize of €1000,-! The winner of the Jury prize will use these funds to create a sustainable collection.

The winning designers will be announced during FASHIONCLASH Festival 2019.

We hebben 10 finalisten gekozen die allen 2 outfits presenteren; één bij Cube Design Museum en één in de expositie tijdens FASHIONCLASH Festival 2019 in de SAM-Decorfabriek.

De deelnemers zijn in de running voor de Jury prijs van €2.500,- en de Publieksprijs van €1000,-! De winnaar van de Jury prijs zal het geldbedrag gebruiken om een duurzame collectie te ontwerpen. De winnende ontwerpers zullen tijdens FASHIONCLASH Festival 2019 bekend worden gemaakt.

FMSA THROWBACK NL

Vorig jaar vond de Fashion Makes Sense Award plaats tijdens het Festive Fashion Dinner in Château St. Gerlach tijdens de 34e IAF-conventie (International Apparel Federation). De avond zat boordevol entertainment en natuurlijk de prijsuitreiking. Na het tellen van de offline stemmen voor de publieksprijs van € 500, - en een intensief overleg door het jurypanel voor de juryprijs van € 2500, -, kregen drie ontwerpers een prijs toegekend.

Last year, the Fashion Makes Sense Award was held at the Festive Fashion Dinner at Château St. Gerlach during the 34th IAF Convention (International Apparel Federation). The evening was packed with entertainment and of course the award ceremony. After counting the offline votes for the Public prize of €500,- and an intense deliberation by the jury panel for the Jury Prize of €2500,-, three designers had been granted an award.

Het professionele jurypanel bestond uit Iris Ruisch (M-ODE.net), Milou van Rossum (moderedacteur bij NRC), Borre Akkersdijk (BYBORRE) en Olgun Aydin (Manager Supply Chain Sustainability, Puma). Naast de uitreiking van de outfits van de finalisten genoten de gasten van theater performer Nina Willems, die 'Dialogue between Fashion and Death' presenteerde en van een muzikale uitvoering van one-towatch artiest Cousin.

The professional jury panel consisted of Iris Ruisch (M-ODE.net), Milou van Rossum (fashion editor at NRC), Borre Akkersdijk (BYBORRE) and Olgun Aydin (Manager Supply Chain Sustainability, Puma). Besides the presentation of the finalists’ outfits, the guests enjoyed performances by theater performer Nina Willems who presented the ‘Dialogue between Fashion and Death’ and a musical performance by one-to-watch artist Cousin.

Op 2 november worden de winnaars van de Fashion Makes Sense Award 2019 bekend gemaakt tijdens FASHIONCLASH Festival 2019. Met deze award wilt FASHIONCLASH ontwerpers motiveren die met een passie voor de wereld en haar inwoners creĂŤren.

Tien ontwerpers laten hun werk zien aan het publiek en een jurypanel zien, in de hoop uitgeroepen te worden tot de winnaar van de Fashion Makes Sense Award 2019. De ontwerpers vertellen je op de volgende pagina’s in hun eigen woorden over de collectie, wat hen inspireerde en op welke manier zij duurzaam werken.

On November 2nd the winners of the Fashion Makes Sense Award 2019 will be announced during FASHIONCLASH Festival 2019. With this award FASHIONCLASH wants to motivate the designers who create with a passion for the world and humanity.

JOIN Collective Clothes JOIN Collective Clothes van Anouk Beckers (1990) schept een context om gezamenlijk het gebied van mode te verkennen.

Anouk gebruikt het kledingstuk als een hulpmiddel om waarden en gewoonten in de mode te verkennen door deconstructie, assemblage en reconstructie van kleding. Haar praktijk biedt nieuwe perspectieven op mode en duurzaamheid door te ondervragen hoe kleding wordt geproduceerd en door tegelijkertijd een aantal van de belangrijkste waarden van de mode uit te dagen, zoals eigendom, identiteit, originaliteit en authenticiteit.

JOIN Collective Clothes is een modulair kledingsysteem dat mensen uitnodigt om samen kleding te maken. Een open source handleiding legt uit hoe je vier verschillende vormen kunt maken die samen een complete outfit vormen.

Iedereen wordt uitgenodigd om een kledingstuk te ontwerpen en te maken.

JOIN Collective Clothes JOIN Collective Clothes by Anouk Beckers (1990) creates a context to explore the field of fashion collaboratively. Anouk uses the garment as a tool to explore values and habits in fashion through deconstruction, assemblage and reconstruction of clothes.

Her practice offers new perspectives on fashion and sustainability by interrogating the way garments are produced while also challenging some of fashion’s core values, such as ownership, identity, originality and authenticity. JOIN Collective Clothes is a modular clothing system that invites people to create clothes together. An open source manual explains how to make four different shapes that together create a complete outfit. Everyone is invited to design and make a piece of a garment.

SCREENCATCHER Let me introduce you to the creative world of 3D virtual fashion design. I have the urge to get people out of their regular way of living by offering surprising and interactive designs, while introducing the exiting implementations of virtual design within the current fashion system. Because I believe that the combination of free creativity and smart technology have the power to make a change.

I want to surprise people by creating interactive impulses with the use of Augmented Reality. I’m taking the virtual 3D designs out of their perfect surroundings, and placing them into our own world, with the use of your mobile device.

Ik wil mensen verrassen door interactieve impulsen te creëren met behulp van Augmented Reality. Ik haal virtuele 3D ontwerpen uit hun perfecte omgeving en plaats ze in onze eigen wereld, met behulp van je mobiele apparaat.

The 3D virtual design programs gave me a new platform to design and experiment, keeping my own waste at a minimum. The physical translations of the end-products are made out of PVC waste-banners and flags, in collaboration with festivals.

De 3D-virtuele ontwerpprogramma’s gaven me een nieuw platform om te ontwerpen en te experimenteren, waarbij ik mijn eigen afval tot een minimum beperk. De fysieke vertalingen van de eindproducten zijn gemaakt in PVC-afvalbanners en vlaggen in samenwerking met festivals.

A fashion graduate from the Edinburgh College of Art, Aurélie’s work represents the “techno-craft” concept, where feminine, inspirational and eco-friendly luxury womenswear is produced from the latest technology and unconventional techniques.

Een afstudeerder van de mode richting aan het Edinburgh College of Art, het werk van Aurélie vertegenwoordigt het ‘’techno-craft’’-concept, waarbij vrouwelijke, inspirerende en milieuvriendelijke luxe womenswear wordt geproduceerd met de nieuwste technologie en onconventionele technieken.

A dress from her graduate collection was engineered in a science lab with the help of grown yeasts and bacteria, which she grew herself. The TENSEGRITY collection stands as utopia for the fashion of the future. A fashion that builds on technology and craft to reach sustainably and ethically produced luxury clothing. From living organism creating textiles to up-cycled waste, these highly feminine and textured silhouettes demonstrate how circular economy and innovation can be combined in luxury ready-to-wear and couture.

Een jurk uit haar afstudeercollectie werd ontworpen in een wetenschappelijk laboratorium met behulp van gisten en bacteriën, die ze zelf heeft gekweekt. De TENSEGRITY-collectie is een utopie voor de mode van de toekomst. Een mode die voortbouwt op technologie en ambacht om duurzaam en ethisch geproduceerde luxekleding te bereiken. Van levend organismen waarbij textiel wordt gemaakt tot upcycled afval, deze zeer vrouwelijke en getextureerde silhouetten laten zien hoe een circulaire economie en innovatie kunnen worden gecombineerd in luxe ready-to-wear en couture.

Dark Matter Ik heb het gevoel dat ik een productieontwerper ben voor mijn onderbewuste innerlijke wereld, waarvan ik denk dat deze verbonden is met iets universeels. Kleding heeft een natuurlijk aandeel in dit landschap. Er is geen strikte lijn tussen de binnen- en buitenwereld: het is doorlaatbaar als een huid, die zowel angstaanjagend als mooi is. Mijn verzameling, gemaakt van gebruikt materiaal, toont de kracht van deze kwetsbaarheid: wat erin zit komt door het oppervlak van de kleding naar buiten of externe elementen gaan naar binnen.

Donkere materie is een hypothetische vorm van materie. Het laat sterrenstelsels bewegen zoals ze tegenwoordig doen. Het is niet zichtbaar met het blote oog. Voor mij is het een analogie voor het onbekende.

Het symboliseert het feit dat we nog niet volledig begrijpen hoe alles met elkaar verbonden is, en dat de industrie die onze individuele lichamen kleedt het grotere lichaam schaadt waar we allemaal deel van uitmaken.

Dark Matter I feel like I am a production designer for my subconscious inner world, which I think is connected to something universal. Clothing has a natural part in this scenery. There is no strict line between the inner and the outer world: it’s permeable like skin, which is disturbing as well as beautiful. My collection, made out of used materials, shows the power of this vulnerability: what’s inside is coming through the surface of the clothes, or outside elements are moving their way in. Dark matter is a hypothetical form of matter. It moves galaxies the way they do. It is not visible with optical instruments. To me it is an analogy for the unknown. It symbolizes the fact that we don’t yet fully comprehend how everything is interconnected, and that the industry that dresses our individual bodies is harming the bigger body we are all part of.

(untitled) Nick Palmer ontving zijn BFA bij Parsons, The New School for Design, waar hij leerde over duurzaamheid en zero-waste patroon ontwerpen. Hij ontving zijn MA aan Central Saint Martins in Londen in 2018. In de loop van zijn professionele en educatieve carrière worstelde hij met de hoeveelheid afval die in de industrie werd geproduceerd en vond hij inspiratie in zijn archief van antieke Victoriaanse kledingstukken en voorwerpen, waarin stof werd samengevoegd voordat nieuwe kledingstukken werden gesneden om zoveel mogelijk stof te besparen. De visie van Nick is om luxe herenkleding te maken die gebruik maakt van upcycled stoffen en andere duurzame methoden zonder afbreuk te doen aan creativiteit of design.

Zijn Masters collectie bevat upcycled kralenwerk en met de hand gequilte kledingstukken gemaakt van de afvalstof van andere stukken in zijn collectie.

(untitled) Nick Palmer received his BFA at Parsons the New School for Design, where he learned about sustainability and zerowaste pattern cutting. He received his MA at Central Saint Martins in London in 2018. Over the course of his professional and educational career he struggled with the amount of waste generated in the industry, and found inspiration in his archive of antique Victorian garments and artifacts, in which fabric was pieced together before new clothing pieces were cut in order to conserve as much fabric as possible.

Nick’s vision is to create luxury menswear that utilizes up-cycled fabrics and other sustainable methods without compromising creativity or design. His MA Collection features up-cycled beadwork and hand-patchworked garments created from the waste fabric of other pieces in his collection.

DORA DUBA GARCIABELLO is geïnspireerd door het dagelijkse leven. Het werk is afkomstig uit Tierra del Fuego, Argentinië. Het merk is op zoek naar de nationale identiteit en processen van duurzame productie.

De kleding is gebaseerd op up-cycling in combinatie met het gebruik van biologisch afbreekbaar katoen. De patronen hebben geen afval, zijn gemaakt in universele maten en zijn ‘genderless’.

DORA DUBA is een verzameling die ik heb gemaakt in samenwerking met mijn grootmoeder Dora. Iedere keer dat we samen zitten bedenken we en maken we een kledingstuk met gerecyclede grondstoffen. De collectie is geïnspireerd op mijn kinderjaren. De relatie die we met mijn grootmoeder hebben opgebouwd, van Buenos Aires tot Tierra del Fuego.

DORA DUBA is een verzameling van al die handgemaakte gewaarwordingen die in een doos vol met geschenken zitten; kleding die ze zelf maakte met oude kleding of ongebruikt textiel, een servet of een bloemenzakdoek, een vanillecake, een handgeschreven brief en alle geuren uit mijn grootmoeders’ huis.

DORA DUBA GARCIABELLO is inspired by the day to day. The work originates from Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. The brand is looking for the national identity and processes of sustainable production. The clothes are based on up-cycling combined with biodegradable cotton. The patterns are zero waste, universal size and no gender.

DORA DUBA is a collection that I made in conjunction with my grandmother Dora.

In each meeting we think of and make a garment with recycled raw material.

The collection is inspired by my childhood.

The relationship that we built with my grandmother from Buenos Aires to Tierra del Fuego.

DORA DUBA are all those sensations that were lodged within a box full of gifts, made at hand; clothes that she made herself with old clothes or textiles in disuse, a napkin or a flower handkerchief, a vanilla cake, a handwritten letter and all the perfume of my grandmother’s house.

46°02‘43.6“N 1°24‘40.3“W Ik ben Barbara Stutz, een Zwitserse mode- en textielontwerper. In maart 2019 voltooide ik mijn studie Fashion Design aan de Academie voor Kunst en Design Basel. Mijn werk is intuïtief gericht op het proces van natuurlijk verven. In mijn afstudeercollectie confronteerde ik natuurlijk geverfde stoffen met industrieel geraffineerde materialen. Mijn doel is om te laten zien dat het zeer traditionele ambacht van natuurlijk verven in geen enkel opzicht achterhaald is, vooral in de huidige klimaatcrisis.

Voor het verfproces gebruikte ik afvalstoffen zoals bloembladen en uienvel of natuurlijke pigmenten van plantaardige bronnen zoals hout en gedroogde duindoornbessen. Mijn ambitie is om bewust modestukken te ontwerpen die uniek zijn in de manier waarop ze zijn gemaakt, zoals hoe het textiel is geweven of hoe de stof is geverfd. Daardoor creëert het een nieuwe relatie met een kledingstuk, wat leidt tot meer waardering en duurzaamheid.

46°02‘43.6“N 1°24‘40.3“W I’m Barbara Stutz, a Swiss Fashion and Textile Designer. In March 2019 I completed my studies in Fashion Design at the Academy of Art and Design Basel. My work is intuitively focused around the process of natural dyeing. In my diploma collection I confronted naturally dyed fabrics with industrial refined materials. My aim is to show that the very traditional craft of natural dyeing is in no sense outdated, especially within the current climate crisis.

For the dyeing process I either used waste materials like flower petals and onion skin or natural pigments from plant sources such as logwood and dried buckthorn berries. My ambition is to consciously design fashion pieces that are unique in the way they are made, like how the textile is woven or how the fabric is dyed.

Therefore it creates a new relationship with clothing, which leads to more valuation and sustainability.

OBRONI WA WU (‘DEATH WHITE MEN’S CLOTHING’) Linda Valkeman is een op onderzoek gebaseerde ontwerper die zich bezig houdt met de interface van ontwerp en antropologie. Ze definieert zichzelf als een ‘Material Teller’ en probeert te onderzoeken hoe de betekenis van objecten, stijlen en esthetische vormen in tijd en ruimte verandert.

Consumptiepatronen, materiële migratie en neokolonialisme zijn onderwerpen die van invloed zijn op en verschijnen in haar werk.

‘Obroni wa wu’, ook wel ‘Death White Men’s Clothing’ genoemd, verkent het leven van tweedehands kledingmateriaal in de context van Ghana en Nederland. Welke impact heeft de ‘gedoneerde’ kleding op de mensen die het ontvangen?

Linda werkt aan een archief met afzenderontvanger verhalen van tweedehandskleding.

Elke look in haar verzameling vertegenwoordigt een ‘kledingpaspoort’, dat inzicht geeft in de beweging en identiteit van de items. Als curator van deze kledingidentiteiten wil ze gedachten oproepen en een dialoog starten over donatie en consumptie van kleding.

OBRONI WA WU (‘DEATH WHITE MEN’S CLOTHING’) Linda Valkeman is a research-based designer who straddles the interface of design and anthropology. Defining herself as a ‘Material Teller’ she aims to explore how the meaning of objects, styles and aesthetic forms change over time and space. Consumptionpatterns, material migration and neo colonialism are subjects that influence or appear in her work.

‘Obroni wa wu’ also known as ‘Death White Men’s Clothing’ explores the life of second hand clothing material in the context of Ghana and the Netherlands. What kind of impact does the ‘donated’ clothing have on the people who receive it?

Linda is working on an archive sharing sender-receiver stories of second hand clothing.

Each look in her collection is representing a ‘clothing passport’, which gives insight on the movement and identity of the items. As a curator of these clothing identities she wants to trigger thoughts and start a dialogue on clothing donation & consumption.

Ik creëer gender neutrale kleding door het verven en weven van verantwoorde plantaardige vezels, die door mijzelf botanisch worden geverfd, gekookt en geformuleerd. Zo produceer ik alternatieven voor op dieren gebaseerde materialen. Een sociaal en milieubewust proces dat effectief onnodig afval vermindert.

I create gender neutral clothing by knitting and weaving responsible plant fibers, which are botanically dyed, cooked and formulated by myself. Producing alternatives to animal based materials. A socially and environmentally conscious process which effectively reduces unnecessary waste.

Ik hoop te kunnen onderwijzen en daarmee de vraag naar ‘transparantie’ binnen onze huidige industrie te initiëren. Het normaliseren en de-stigmatiseren van duurzaamheid. Zodat het relevant en toegankelijk kan zijn.

I hope to educate, initiating a demand for ‘transparency’ within the present of our industry. Normalizing and de-stigmatizing sustainability. So it may be relevant and accessible.

My first collection which shares the name “MOTHERWOMB”, depicts our earth in a distant future as a desiccated desert land. The only survivors being a tribe of bugs who climb from between the dry ground of the Savanna, to dance for rain.

The movement of each garment conveys a sense of euphoria. The collection energetically applies luxury to sustainable design. A satirical, utopian preservation of the beauty of our world.

Mijn eerste verzameling die de naam “MOTHERWOMB” deelt, toont onze aarde in een verre toekomst als een uitgedroogd woestijnland. De enige overlevenden zijn een stam van insecten die omhoog klimmen tussen de droge grond van de savanne, om te dansen voor regen. De beweging van elk kledingstuk geeft een gevoel van euforie.

De collectie past op een energieke manier luxe toe in duurzaam design. Een satirische, utopische conservering van de schoonheid van onze wereld.

APHORODITE OF ANTHROPOCENE Hoewel mijn werk voornamelijk geïnspireerd is door de natuur en de relatie tussen de menselijke en de natuurlijke wereld; ben ik erg geïnteresseerd in het dubbelzinnige concept van de natuur in de 21e eeuw.

“Aphrodite of Anthropocene” bespreekt esthetische normen van het postmenselijke tijdperk en hoe we ‘natuur’ herkennen terwijl we leven in een tijd waarin de grens tussen virtual en realiteit behoorlijk vervaagd is.

APHORODITE OF ANTHROPOCENE While my work is mainly inspired by nature and the relationship between the human and natural world; I am very interested in the ambiguous concept of how nature is in the 21st century. “Aphrodite of Anthropocene” discusses aesthetic standards of post-human era, and how we recognize “nature” while living in a time where the line between virtual and reality are significantly blurred.

I use recycled materials and botanical dyed natural fibers to make a highly crafted collection; I think sustainability should be a choice we could make while designing any kind of fashion. I apply different craftsmanship in the collection and try to reform the clothing production process through deconstructing and reconstructing existing manufacture methods. By using traditional techniques like botanical dye and hand weaving, I hope to use these techniques and materials more artistically and conceptually. If we could rethink tradition, we may find a way to connect generations and sustain local culture.

Ik gebruik gerecyclede materialen en botanisch geverfde natuurlijke vezels om een zeer bewerkte collectie te maken; Ik denk dat duurzaamheid een keuze moet zijn die we kunnen maken bij het ontwerpen van elke vorm van mode. Ik pas verschillend vakmanschap toe in de collectie en probeer het kleding productieproces te hervormen door bestaande fabricagemethodes te deconstrueren en te reconstrueren.
