The Waves is een ruimtelijk ‘album’ gemaakt door de Noorse componist Espen Sommer Eide. Het album bestaat uit een reeks werken die elkaar opvolgen in de ruimte en zowel apart als gezamenlijk te beluisteren zijn. De opnames vonden plaats in 2018 en 2019, waarbij Espen Sommer Eide samenwerkte met musici en kunstenaars. De opnames resulteren in een vinyl album en worden tegelijkertijd gemixt tot muziekstukken die weer in Marres worden afgespeeld.

READER,

IN FRONT OF YOU LIES THE PAPER WITH WHICH WE PRESENT THE 11TH EDITION OF FASHIONCLASH FESTIVAL. THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THIS PAPER AND HOPEFULLY ALSO FOR VISITING THE FESTIVAL. WE PROUDLY PRESENT; ALL THOSE INVOLVED AND PARTNERS WHO HELP SHAPE THE FESTIVAL AND ALL DESIGNERS AND ARTISTS WHO WILL SHARE THEIR CREATIONS WITH US. The world we live in is constantly changing and every era has its own challenges and victories. We share one world with many unique souls, but not always in desirable and fair circumstances.

In 2009 we started FASHIONCLASH with a mission; contribute to a better world through fashion projects. Because designers are able to translate the zeitgeist in an imaginative way into the current context, but also to speculate about the future. Today’s generation designers see fashion as a mission. They explore the limits of their discipline, question the (fashion)system and engage in dialogue.

For these searching innovators, the festival is a stage to show work and to get in touch with the broad public.

At FASHIONCLASH we are also constantly on the move. Not only has the festival period changed, we have also abandoned working with an overarching festival theme. With the change of the period we enter a new dynamic and with that possibly new adventures and benefits (and undoubtedly also disadvantages).

The most important thing is to maintain the festival as a relevant platform and free space for avantgarde fashion makers and the adventurous audience. The festival is an ode to the art of fashion, artistic freedom and the independent free spirit. That is why there is no overall theme but a variety of visions about fashion and the world with themes such as sustainability, politics and inclusiveness.

The connecting link on which the content of the festival program is based are the core values of ​​ FASHIONCLASH; namely 'Clash', 'Fashion Makes Sense' and 'Community'. Clash stands for crossovers and initiating interdisciplinary collaborations, Fashion Makes Sense for placing fashion in a social context with the aim of contributing to an inclusive and sustainable world and Community for public engagement and sustainable growth of the FASHIONCLASH Family.

The program, composed in The Shows and The Route, will take place from 1 to 3 November at various locations in Maastricht. In the SAM-Decorfabriek you can enjoy fashion shows, performances and exhibitions on Friday and Saturday night. The beating heart of The Route program can be found in the Sphinxkwartier, where you can discover new fashion narratives at Lumière Cinema, Bureau Europa and The Student Hotel.

Lovers of crossovers with theater can enjoy the performances of young theater makers and students of the Maastricht Theater Academy at Marres. And there is much more to experience in De Brandweerkantine, de Bijenkorf, Mosae Forum and Kumulus.

Voor deze zoekende vernieuwers is het festival een podium om werk te tonen en om in contact te komen met het brede publiek.

Bij FASHIONCLASH zijn we ook voortdurend in beweging. Niet alleen de festivalperiode is veranderd, ook het werken met een overkoepelend thema hebben we losgelaten. Met de verandering van de periode begeven we ons in een nieuwe dynamiek en daarmee mogelijk nieuwe avonturen en voordelen (en ongetwijfeld ook nadelen). Het belangrijkste is, het onderhouden van het festival als een relevant platform en vrijplaats voor eigenzinnige modemakers en het avontuurlijke publiek. Het festival is een ode aan de modekunst, artistieke vrijheid en de onafhankelijke vrije geest.

Daarom is er geen overkoepelend thema maar een verzameling van verscheidene visies over mode en over de wereld met thema’s als duurzaamheid, politiek en inclusiviteit.

De verbindende factor waarop de content van het festivalprogramma is gebaseerd zijn de kernwaarden van FASHIONCLASH; namelijk ‘Clash’, ‘Fashion Makes Sense’ en ‘Community’. Clash staat voor crossovers en het initiëren van interdisciplinaire samenwerkingen, Fashion Makes Sense voor het plaatsen van mode in sociaal-maatschappelijke context met het doel om bij te dragen aan een inclusieve en duurzame wereld en Community voor het publieksengagement en het duurzaam voortbouwen van de FASHIONCLASH Family.

Het programma, vormgegeven in The Shows en The Route, voltrekt zich van 1 t/m 3 november op verschillende locaties in Maastricht.

In de SAM-Decorfabriek kun je op vrijdag en zaterdagavond genieten van modeshows, performances en exposities. Het kloppend hart van The Route programma vind je in het Sphinxkwartier waar je de nieuwe mode narrativen kunt ontdekken bij Lumière Cinema, Bureau Europa en The Student Hotel.

Liefhebbers van crossovers met theater kunnen gedurende het festival in Marres de performances bewonderen van jonge theatermakers en studenten van de Toneelacademie Maastricht.

Berend Brus is a fashion designer who is inspired by people who create their own reality and driven by his need to converse about societal issues. Even though his work touches upon serious subjects and carries significant weight, it is always accompanied by a wink and a great

sense of humor. He sees his work as a celebration of freedom, individuality and expression through fashion.

NL Berend Brus is een modeontwerper die zich laat inspireren door mensen die hun eigen realiteit creëren en die gedreven wordt door zijn behoefte om te praten over maatschappelijke kwesties. Hoewel zijn werk serieuze onderwerpen raakt en van groot belang is, gaat het altijd gepaard met een knipoog en een groot gevoel voor humor. Born in Brazil and just recently graduated from the University of Westminster, Bruna has always enjoyed experimenting with textiles and shapes, while trying to escape from the seriousness and simplicity that contemporary fashion seems to perpetuate.

A shot that was like a torch on the fire that it would be accessing. Precision, attention to detail and tailoring blend with the world that changes and transforms continuously. That shot reborn as an artistic expression to tell a story, a feeling, a problem. Each garment represents a detail, a specific moment. Art, politics, society and intimacy come together as an instrument of diffusion to the public, a microphone of words.

De focus van ODE AAN OMA collectief gaat over nostalgie, genderneutraliteit en het gebruik van verschillende duurzame materialen en vakmanschap. Dit komt voort uit het gebruik van de kennis en verhalen van de oudere generatie en door interdisciplinair te werken.

ODE AAN OMA is a collective existing of three young fashion designers: Debbie Jellema, Jasmijn Taken and Mirte Luijmes, graduated in 2018 from the HKU University of the Arts. Having their own qualities and perspectives of fashion they make a diverse collective. The main focus of ODE AAN OMA collective is about nostalgia, gender-neutrality and using different sustainable materials and craftsmanship. This stems from the use of the knowledge and stories of the older generation and by working interdisciplinary.

NL Roos heeft een obsessie voor het menselijk lichaam en al zijn complexiteiten. In haar collecties vertaalt ze deze fascinatie naar mode en lingerie door gebruik te maken van een zeer directe en conceptuele taal. Roos Boshart Prins Roos has an obsession for the human body and all its complexities. In her collections she is translating this fascination into fashion and lingerie, using a very direct and conceptual visual language. Her way of working is driven by idealism, which results in statement collections where the concept is as important as the garments themselves. With all her work, she wants to trigger the audience to think about what they see and create their own opinion. Even though her work is mainly raw, she always adds some humor and sensuality into her designs.

NL Het werk van Carlijn Veurink initieert samenwerkingen tussen verschillende disciplines. Dit kan dans, theater, mode, creatief schrijven, muziek, etc. zijn. Ze probeert nieuwe manieren te ontdekken waarop een kostuum een autonome en sculpturale rol kan spelen in een uitvoering. Haar achtergrond in productdesign zie je terug in haar constructieve en systematische benadering van mode. Haar show tijdens FASHIONCLASH Festival 2019 is het resultaat van een samenwerking met creatieve schrijver Jante Wortel.

She tries to discover new ways in which a costume can play an autonomous and sculptural role in a performance. Her background in product design reflects in her constructional and systematic approach towards fashion.

Her work has explored a vast variety of different and unusual materials. She investigates the boundary between art and fashion and aims in challenging garment perception. Aiming to present fashion in a new and exciting concept, she challenges notions such as fast

NL Makins is recent afgestudeerd aan de Master van de Zweedse School voor Textiel in Borås, Zweden. Ze is geboren in Zuid-Afrika en opgegroeid in Perth, Australië. Haar werk heeft een groot scala aan verschillende en ongewone materialen onderzocht. Ze onderzoekt de grens tussen kunst en mode en streeft naar een uitdagende perceptie op kleding. Met het doel om mode te presenteren in een nieuw en opwindend concept, daagt ze begrippen uit als fast fashion, traditionele designmethodes en kleding constructie.

We stretch up the meaning of objects, break with habits and exaggerate the expectations we have of objects through physical and philosophical research. With our work we advocate for a more humane relationship between man and object. By creating products, film and performances with a humorous touch we invite the public to cross predictable standards.

In his ongoing artistic research process, he goes on a quest to challenge normativity. Being queer and disabled himself, intersectionality is at the core of his work. His focus is on how performance is linked to fashion, costume, clothing and uniform.

NL Anne en Joy hebben elkaar leren kennen tijdens hun studie aan de kunstacademie in Berlijn en hebben samen hun eindopdracht ontwikkeld. Ze zijn het erover eens dat de disciplines textiel en mode niet alleen op elkaar voortbouwen en van elkaar profiteren, maar eigenlijk niet werken zonder elkaar. Anne and Joy got to know each other during their studies at the art school in Berlin and developed their final project together. Part of this process is a practical examination of clothing through deconstruction and the use of sculptor techniques like casting. Her work is characterized by the use of non-textile materials like hair, liquid rubbers or foam. The field of tension between clothing and fashion is one of her artistic research fields.

Sara Ama Duah heeft een artistieke benadering op de ontwikkeling van kleding. In haar praktijk richt ze zich op kleding die losstaat van het dagelijkse gebruik. Onderdeel van dit proces is een praktisch onderzoek van kleding door deconstructie en het gebruik van beeldhouwtechnieken zoals gieten. Arvid & Marie do research on how humanity collides with its technological creations.

They investigate the Chinese e-commerce platform Alibaba where anything and everything is for sale. But how does a website understand its own products? What is a shoe to an algorithm? How is a suitcase defined?

A conglomerate of stuff accumulates and takes over the body. They are fake, those objects are representations of the data that describes them online. Each of these curious items are the most recommended product of its type, carefully chosen by an algorithm to appeal to our online cravings. The choices of the Alibaba algorithm stick to our skin.

Hanneke & Tosca call themselves movement designers. They joined forces after graduating from the ArtEZ Product Design department. Playfully they experiment with objects, film and performance. With their work they advocate for a more humane relationship between man and object and for a revaluation of daily habits and products.

For the costume ‘SICK OF SINGLE SOCKS’ they use the washing machine as the base.

They wonder about the fact that the washing machine eats their socks. And about the unusual habit of humans to crawl into the machine. Where do the socks go? And how would it be for humans to run along with a wash?

Voor het kostuum ‘SICK OF SINGLE SOCKS’ gebruiken Hanneke & Tosca de wasmachine als uitgangspunt. Ze verwonderen zich over het feit dat de wasmachine hun sokken eet.

En over de vreemde gewoonte om als mens in wasmachines te kruipen. Waar blijven de sokken en hoe zou het zijn om als mens een wasje mee te draaien?

My design work consists on capturing Zeitgeists. Recently, I have been focusing on the fine lines between fantasy and reality and how our social media driven culture increasingly blurs those frontiers.

With the project Kayfabe I portray the final goal of the online persona. One we create with our minds, hearts and actions and shape the image we want others to perceive from us, leaving our real identity in the background. An Instagram profile is nothing else but a micro reality show, entertainment, a fantasy marked as real, in other words; it’s a Kayfabe.

Fenna van der Klei seems to have a magnifying-glass in order to see and explore. The mesmerising colours and arousing textures she discovers suggest to be of a whole other universe, even though they are native to Planet Earth. And exactly this is where she finds her ground control to take off. Taking a geologist’s attitude, Fenna analysed and combined Tartan and Japanese traditional clothing to make new types of weaving and so created GURIDDO for the CLASH Project 2019. Fenna van der Klei joins unusual material combinations and cutting-edge technologies in order to reinvent the way textile surfaces and textiles are produced.

‘Fashion Frontier’ is an armoured identity ready to explore uncharted territory in the fashion world.

Fransje is always exploring how materials can be used in an unconventional way, pushing boundaries and reinventing techniques.

With her ‘Standing Textile(S)’-collection she has been testing the possibilities of weaving, creating her own method to 3D-weave free form sculptures and interior objects. For the Clash Project she not only re-imagined the definition of textile, but that of ‘wearable’ textile, resulting in a 3D-woven wearable for the 3-dimensional body.

Risja Steeghs is a multidisciplinary artist working along the lines of sculpture, installation and performance. Her work focusses on the bed as a metaphor for the body’s becoming and its incessant qualities of rebirth. Within her work she explores notions of transformation, rebirth and how we as humans occupy space in this world.

For the CLASH project she created a garment out of overproduction coated in see-through rubber to create a unified piece with a fleshy texture, acting as a second skin.

The work questions our relationship with mass-consumption & mass-production, as well as acting as an extension of the wearers’ body.

Risja Steeghs is een multidisciplinair beeldend kunstenaar die werkt met sculptuur, installaties en performance. Haar werk focust zich op het bed als een metafoor voor het ontstaan van het lichaam en zijn eindeloze kwaliteiten van wedergeboorte. In haar werk onderzoekt ze noties van transformatie, wedergeboorte en hoe wij als mensen ruimte in innemen in deze wereld.

Voor het CLASH Project maakte ze een werk van overproductie. Deze losse kledingstukken bedekte ze met een laag rubber om zo een werk te creëren dat functioneert als een twee huid. Het werk is een reactie op onze relatie met massaconsumptie en massaproductie in de modewereld.

Through her wearable sculpture, GermanIranian artist Siba Sahabi explores the relationship between the human anatomy and geometry. In the first century B.C. Roman architect Marcus Vitruvius Pollio studied the proportions of the human body in an attempt to define universal beauty. Many artists followed his path including Leonardo da Vinci. In 1490 he sketched a man within a circle and square and entitled his work ‘The Vitruvian Man’. Inspired by the contrast of human anatomy versus geometric aesthetics Siba created this abstract sculpture. The architectural structure consists of ten interwoven triangles that express the unsolvable task to measure human beauty by means of geometric laws.

CLASH PROJECT 2019 — THE 11TH EDITION \ Since the beginning of FASHIONCLASH Festival in 2009, CLASH Project invites 10 artists and designers per year to translate their work into wearable catwalk pieces. Participants from different art and design disciplines are challenged to transfer their practice, both materially and conceptually to a different medium. CLASH is the perfect opportunity to step out of your artistic comfort zone, to play and experiment with other forms of art.

The participants are professionals who represent various artistic disciplines, such as fine art, product design, performance and photography. All disciplines except fashion are possible. The CLASH Project has become an iconic project, forming one of the highlights of the FASHIONCLASH Festival and its outcome is always refreshing, captivating and trendsetting.

Therefore, for me, fashion is inherently connected to culture, society and politics. My designs are filled with layers of meaning that come together in a desire to create something new, something different. By combining new with classic, my designs strive to be innovative yet still recognizable, making it possible to reach a broad audience. My designer aspiration is to question and challenge the meaning and interpretation of fashion and to open a dialogue on cultural social issues through fashion design.

Jolieke Kessels is an alumnus from the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design. She explores the possibilities of traditional handcrafts and their use in contemporary fashion. With knitting and crochet being two often reoccurring techniques. Unconventional materials and craftsmanship are combined in refined garments. Jolieke finds inspiration in the slowness of traditional techniques and garments.

Her collections often being dreamy, feminine and delicate. Every piece is like a beautiful gem.

As I have been involved in the urban dance scene from my early childhood onwards I am eager to combine design and dance and open up the subculture hip hop to a broader mass.

My main inspiration is rooted in my heritage. Through my family’s background in the world of sports I have a great connection to activewear and got to know this world from the perspective of an athlete. This shaped my vision for the design and the style my brand communicates.

NL Het merk LIPKA gaat over interdisciplinaire creaties, het bouwen van een platform en het tonen van de schoonheid van uitwisseling. Omdat ik vanaf mijn vroege jeugd betrokken was bij de urban dance scene, wil ik design en dans graag combineren en de subcultuur van hiphop openstellen voor een bredere massa.

Mijn belangrijkste inspiratie is geworteld in mijn erfgoed. Door de achtergrond van mijn familie in de sportwereld heb ik een intensieve band met activewear en heb ik deze wereld leren kennen vanuit het perspectief van een atleet. Dit vormde mijn visie om te ontwerpen en de stijl die mijn merk communiceert.

Do all of these luxury products really make our lives easier? Or does this new luxury have a more cultural value than a real value? This superfluous behavior has to do with a certain temporality, something that is perishable. With this I want to show the flip side of luxury products.

Emerging designer Annaiss encourages a radical change in her society as looking at the lack of creativity and exposure in the Peruvian fashion system. Building up not only an emerging fashion movement, but also a collaboration environment through the small industry.

The brand identifies itself as a crossover between color and heritage and aims to transmit the identity of her country through her garments.

Her paths towards vision are always hued with precise, analytic structures and the embrace of disorder, accompanied by a refined sensitivity. She has worked in the fields of theatre, dance, performance, design & film-making.

Deze positie kan worden gemanipuleerd door naar het ideaal te streven en dominante trends te volgen. Als ontwerper is het deze handeling van het manipuleren van de identiteit en het zelf dat me fascineert. Mode kan worden gebruikt als een middel om levensfasen in kaart te brengen en als een manier om ons verlangen om op te vallen als een uniek menselijk wezen te visualiseren. Als ontwerper twijfel ik aan het idee van identiteit en verander ik onze kijk op identiteit binnen de visie van manipulatie en modificatie. Mode verbergt het individu, maar wordt het niet.

The identical and unique position of the individual is often positioned by physical appearance. This position can be manipulated by striving for the ideal and pursuing dominant trends. As a designer, it is this act of manipulating the identity and the self that fascinates me. Fashion can be used as a force to map and visualize life phases and our desire to stand out as a unique human being. As a designer I question the idea of identity and alter our view on identity within the vision of manipulation and modification. Fashion conceals the individual, but does not become it.

NL Achter wholina staat Julina Vanille Bezold, een Zwitsers-Duitse conceptuele lichaamsontwerper, wonend in Europa. Door de lenzen van de kunsten werd ze opgeleid tot modeontwerper en waagde ze zich ook aan trans disciplinaire benaderingen zoals wetenschappelijk ontwerp. Haar werk vertelt verhalen over de botsing van tegenstellingen in de menselijke natuur en haar omgeving. Haar wegen naar visie zijn altijd gekleurd door precieze, analytische structuren en de omhelzing van wanorde, vergezeld door een verfijnde gevoeligheid. Ze heeft gewerkt in theater, dans, performance, design en film.

ANNAISS YUCRA MANCILLA werd in 2017 opgericht als een manier om "ARTIVISM" te creëren via mode in Latijns-Amerika. De opkomende ontwerper Annaiss moedigt een radicale verandering in haar samenleving aan door te kijken naar het gebrek aan creativiteit en bekendheid in het Peruaanse modesysteem. Zo bouwt ze niet alleen aan een opkomende modebeweging, maar ook een samenwerkingsomgeving via de kleine industrie.

The message of every collection is always hidden, not explicit. That's what I want; to attract people's attention and make them reflect.

NL Iedere collectie is voor mij een communicatiemiddel, een manier om over te brengen hoe ik denk over de wereld waarin we leven zonder al te voordehand liggend te zijn. Ik zie mode als een middel om een verhaal te vertellen en gedachten en meningen van alle kanten van de maatschappij te delen. Alles van vandaag is gerelateerd aan het verleden en aan onze wortels en culturen die zo verschillende lijken, maar in feit zo gelijk zijn. De boodschap achter iedere collectie is altijd verborgen, niet expliciet. Dat is wat ik wil; de aandacht van mensen trekken en ze laten reflecteren.

The concepts worked are histories that the designer lived. The natural, the original, the warm, the home, the simple, the marginal and the brutal are a source of inspiration for the work. The brand is looking for the national identity and sustainable production processes. The clothes based on up-cycling combined with biodegradable cotton are farmed by collaborations in the Chaco province.

The patterns are zero waste. The garments are in universal sizes and genderless.

NL GARCIABELLO is geïnspireerd door het alledaagse. Het werk stamt van de provincie Tierra del Fuego, Argentinië.

De gebruikte concepten zijn de geschiedenissen die de ontwerpster leefde. Het natuurlijke, het originele, het warme, het huiselijke, het eenvoudige, het marginale en het brutale zijn een bron van inspiratie voor het werk.

Het merk is op zoek naar de nationale identiteit en duurzame productieprocessen. De kleding gebaseerd op upcycling in combinatie met biologisch afbreekbare katoen worden gevormd door samenwerkingen in de Chaco provincie. De patronen zijn zero waste.

De kledingstukken zijn in universele maten en uniseks.

La Cambre in Brussel, Central Saint Martins in Londen en Esmod in Parijs met jaarlijks betaalde beurzen voor het winnen van de hoofdprijs van modewedstrijden zoals AOF International Competition, Kolon Fashion Awards en Korea Fashion Design Awards.

Sinds hij werd geselecteerd als een top 10-finalist voor de Mango Fashion Awards, behaalde hij zijn Masterdiploma in Fashion Design aan de ArtEZ Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Arnhem en startte hij zijn modelabel.

Maarten Van Mulken is a fashion designer and label based in the Netherlands. The main focus of the label is on womenswear collections, but there are many side projects variating from menswear, performances and objects.

The created collections are based on concepts that are meant to disrupt normal life, referring to different fields within art and combining them with current social issues. The style can be described as dark, twisted and vibrant. Next to the label he is working for a theater company in Antwerp called Troubleyn, where he is the clothing designer for several theater productions.

De gecreëerde collecties zijn gebaseerd op concepten die bedoeld zijn om het normale leven te verstoren en verwijzen naar verschillende gebieden binnen de kunst

en gecombineerd met hedendaagse sociale kwesties. De stijl kan worden omschreven als donker, gestoord en levendig. Naast het label werkt hij voor een theatergezelschap in Antwerpen, genaamd Troubleyn, waar hij kostuumontwerper is voor verschillende theaterproducties.

The use of print is a distinctive aspect of the brand as it helps the designer communicate the narrative of the collection through the use of illustration. The label is womenswear with a playful twist.

Demonstrating growth and how you wouldn’t get the woman without the girl that came before. Celebrating the layers of human beings and the stages of life through fashion.

Het DNA van het merk gaat over de rauwheid van een zorgeloos kind zijn en dat niet verliezen in de druk om volwassen te zijn; altijd onthouden om van het leven te genieten en een innerlijke vrede in je te houden. Het gebruik van print is een onderscheidend aspect van het merk, omdat het de ontwerper helpt het verhaal van de collectie te communiceren door het gebruik van illustratie. Het label is dameskleding met een speelse twist. Het toont groei en hoe je de vrouw niet zou krijgen zonder het meisje dat er eerst was. Het vieren van de lagen van de mens en de levensstadia door middel van mode.

Dutch / @teun_seuren TEUN is a menswear designer, focusing on collections with a message. Within his collections he poses questions and plays with different perspectives on them. Subjects such as gender, homosexuality, vulnerability and the phenomenon “manipulation” are themes that both fascinate and frustrate him. This frustration is an enormous drive for him, often adding a certain deepness to the messages in his work. He profiles himself as a designer with a fresh perspective, one in which the male and female identity become homogeneous. This is expressed with color, material, shape and sensitivity. Especially sensitivity is vital to him.

NL TEUN is een herenkledingontwerper, die zich concentreert op collecties met een boodschap. Binnen zijn collecties stelt hij voortdurend vragen en speelt hij met verschillende perspectieven hierop. Onderwerpen als gender, homoseksualiteit, kwetsbaarheid en het fenomeen ‘manipulatie’ zijn thema’s die hem zowel fascineren als frustreren. Deze frustratie is een enorme motivatie voor hem die vaak een bepaalde diepgang geven aan de boodschappen in zijn werk. Hij profileert zichzelf als een designer met een fris perspectief waarin de mannelijke en vrouwelijke identiteit homogeen worden. Dit uit zich in kleur, materiaal, vorm en gevoeligheid. Vooral de gevoeligheid is belangrijk voor hem.

He read them, analysed them and, together with musician Frederik de Clercq, mashed them up into a symphonic opera somewhere between spoken word and a semi-anecdotal song lyric. In this dreamlike transformation, Hendrik Kegels reveals the desire to exceed our physical and mental boundaries. During the performance, the audience is taken on a night-time spacetrip. A journey full of planets and stars, given shape by a whirlwind of words, synths and beats.

Her graduate collection ‘induviae’ was showcased at the curated LCF BA 2018 Press Show, being highlighted in diverse art and design publications such as Dazed and Confused, Dezeen and Something Curated.

While studying, she worked at Christopher Kane, Simone Rocha and Roksanda studios, allowing her to deepen her knowledge and creative practice within fashion industry context. She received the Best National Emerging Designer Award at Sangue Novo competition at ModaLisboaLisbon Fashion Week after presenting 'A complex form', obtaining a scholarship to study MA Fashion Design at Polimoda. During the Sangue Novo contest, she also won her participation at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2019.

NL Klaskie combineert alle kunsten in een wereldbeeld waarbij echt zijn het belangrijkste is. Het is een label dat zich niet aan de normen wil conformeren en waarbij anders zijn wordt gevierd. Het wil mensen aan het denken zetten en beslissen wat normaliteit is en of het zelfs bestaat.

NL Het concept van mijn ontwerp is gebaseerd op het hebben van een keuze. Omdat er niets krachtiger is dan een keuze hebben! Multifunctionele kledingstukken zijn een must in mijn collecties, want dat is een manier om de klanten keuzevrijheid te geven in de manier waarop zij kleding aan hun behoeften zullen aanpassen.

Vrouwen in mijn familie hebben me geïnspireerd voor dit concept, omdat we verschillende lichaamsvormen en maten hebben, maar we hebben een vergelijkbare stijl. Dankzij mijn ontwerp (aanpassing van lengte, tailleomvang en volume) kunnen we hetzelfde kledingstuk op zoveel verschillende manieren dragen!

NL Het label Natalie Dufkova is gebaseerd op een opvallende en jeugdige stijl, die op het eerste gezicht je aandacht trekt. Het is bedoeld voor de draagster die haar persoonlijkheid wilt benadrukken en in haar eigen stijl gelooft. De filosofie van het label vloeide voort uit het samensmelten van jeugdige stijl, luxe en originaliteit.

FASHION AFTER FLOOD In 2019, Taskforce Fashion will focus on Fashion After Flood, in which 15 Dutch fashion designers are tackling a current social issue: the rising (sea) water level.

If climate change continues at its current pace, then Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam will disappear completely under water in 2300*. The Veluwe has than become an island on which Arnhem, Ede and Apeldoorn hardly have a place.

Maastricht has become the base for coastal towns such as Tilburg and Eindhoven. FASHION AFTER FLOOD In 2019 richt Taskforce Fashion zich op Fashion After Flood, waarin 15 Nederlandse modeontwerpers zich buigen over een actueel maatschappelijk vraagstuk: de stijgende (zee)waterspiegel.

Als de klimaatverandering doorzet in het huidige tempo, dan zijn Amsterdam, Den Haag en Rotterdam anno 2300* volledig onder water verdwenen. De Veluwe is dan een eiland geworden, waarop Arnhem, Ede en Apeldoorn ternauwernood een plek hebben. Maastricht is de uitvalsbasis geworden voor kustplaatsen als Tilburg en Eindhoven. Dit toekomstscenario* - dat eerder dit jaar aandacht kreeg in Vrij Nederland, schetst een mogelijke realiteit die niet alleen om verbeeldingskracht vraagt, maar ook om oplossingsrichtingen voor nieuwe samenlevingsvormen, businessmodellen en ontwerp-praktijken. *Scenario schets Dr. Kim Cohen Universiteit Utrecht, Vrij Nederland, 2019

TEAMS In teams of five, the designers zoom in on three cities in the Netherlands: Maastricht, Arnhem and Amsterdam. From various angles - as a designer, as a Dutch person and as a human being they look at the future of these cities through the eyes of fashion and develop innovative ideas and solutions that accelerate thinking about a future with water. They are guided in this by architect and urban developer Tim Prins, fashion industry expert Susanne Vegter and industrial designer and design thinker Tjeerd Veenhoven.

‘Instead of a collection of colour, shape and material, Lonneke and I wanted to bring the image back to the essence: the pure. We tried to find the statement of the ‘clash’ in image and let go of fashion and put creation and search for boundaries within different disciplines in a broader perspective. That’s why we started experimenting with transparency, in figural and literal sense. It was mostly about the interaction between Produced, Nature and Transparency. I tried to become a literal blank canvas. ‘In plaats van een bonte verzameling aan kleur, vorm en materiaal wilden Lonneke en ik het beeld terugdringen naar de essentie; het pure. In beeld het statement van de 'clash' opzoeken. Om te beginnen laten we de fashion los, maar zetten we creatie en het opzoeken van grenzen binnen de verschillende disciplines in een breder perspectief. We zijn gaan werken met transparantie, zowel in figuurlijke als letterlijke zin: wat de natuur produceert.

De wisselwerking (driehoeksverhouding) tussen Produced, Nature en Transparency. Ik word in het beeld letterlijk een blanco canvas. Vanuit mijn lichaam ben ik de grenzen van transparantie en ‘zijn’ op gaan zoeken in combinatie met materialen van buitenaf. Materialen die geïnspireerd zijn op wat natuurlijk is en daarom transparant, dus niet ongelaagd.’

EN \ MOTHERWOMB ‘MOTHERWOMB by Savanah Avery is a ready-to-wear “plant based fashion” brand. I create gender neutral clothing by knitting and weaving responsible plant fibers, which are botanically dyed, cooked and formulated by myself. Producing alternatives to animal based materials. A socially and environmentally conscious process which effectively reduces unnecessary waste.

The brand is looking for the national identity and processes of sustainable production. The clothes are based on up-cycling combined with biodegradable cotton. The patterns are zero waste, universal size and genderless.

NL \ DORA DUBA GARCIABELLO is geïnspireerd door het dagelijkse leven. Het werk is afkomstig uit Tierra del Fuego, Argentinië. Het merk is op zoek naar de nationale identiteit en processen van duurzame productie. De kleding is gebaseerd op up-cycling in combinatie met het gebruik van biologisch afbreekbaar katoen. EN \ TENSEGRITY Aurélie Fontan is a sustainable fashion designer, with a focus on bio-design and circular economy.

Her work represents the “techno-craft” concept, where feminine, inspirational and eco-friendly luxury womenswear is produced from the latest technology and unconventional techniques.

EN \ 46°02‘43.6“N 1°24‘40.3“W ‘My work is intuitively focused around the process of natural dyeing. In my diploma ollection I confronted naturally dyed fabrics with industrial refined materials. My aim is to show that the very traditional craft of natural dyeing is in no sense outdated, especially within the current climate crisis.’

My collection, made out of used materials, shows the power of this vulnerability.’

EN \ Obroni wa wu (‘Death White Men’s Clothing’) ‘Obroni wa wu’ also known as ‘Death White Men’s Clothing’ explores the life of second hand clothing material in the context of Ghana and the Netherlands. What kind of impact does the ‘donated’ clothing have on the people who receive it?

Linda is working on an archive sharing sender-receiver stories of second hand clothing.

NL \ Dark Matter ‘Ik heb het gevoel dat ik een productieontwerper ben voor mijn onderbewuste innerlijke wereld, waarvan ik denk dat deze verbonden is met iets universeels. Kleding heeft een natuurlijk aandeel in dit landschap. Er is geen strikte lijn tussen de binnen- en buitenwereld: het is doorlaatbaar als een huid, die zowel angstaanjagend als mooi is.

Mijn collectie, gemaakt van gebruikt materiaal, toont de kracht van deze kwetsbaarheid.’

The planned events consist of lectures, interviews, conferences, debate afternoons, expert talks and matchmaking meetings. EN \ APHORODITE OF ANTHROPOCENE ‘While my work is mainly inspired by nature and the relationship between the human and natural world; I am very interested in the ambiguous concept of how nature is in the 21st century. “Aphrodite of Anthropocene” discusses aesthetic standards of post-human era, and how we recognize “nature” while living in a time where the line between virtual and reality are significantly blurred.’

Cube design museum bouwt haar rol binnen de creatieve industrie verder uit en wordt een fysieke ​en digitale ontmoetingsplek voor matchmaking, stimulering en valorisatie tussen de Limburgse creatieve industrie, het mkb en het onderwijs.

"Aphrodite of Anthropocene" bespreekt esthetische normen van het post-menselijke tijdperk, en hoe we 'natuur' herkennen terwijl we leven in een tijd waarin de grens tussen virtual en realiteit behoorlijk vervaagd is.’

During the festival you can visit and experience multiple activities and events within The Route program at various locations in town.

The program consists of exhibitions, performances, talks and workshops and is largely free and accessible to a wide audience.

The Route program will also showcase exhibitions at Mosae Forum and De Bijenkorf (Showpieces), a dance performance by House of Confetti at Kumulus (2 November), a workshop by JOIN Collective Clothes at the Brandweerkantine (1 November) and several other activities.

Tijdens het festival kan men in het The Route programma op diverse locaties in de stad meerdere activiteiten en events bekijken en beleven.

Het programma bestaat uit exposities, performances, talks en workshops en is grotendeels gratis en toegankelijk voor een breed publiek.

Het gehele Marres ‘Huis voor de Hedendaagse Kunst’ zal tijdens het festival worden omgevormd tot een Performance Huis. Je kunt hier genieten van crossover performances van jonge theatermakers en studenten van de Toneelacademie Maastricht.

Ieder jaar zijn er duizenden mode afstudeerders over de hele wereld die met hun afstudeerwerk hun dromen en kijk op de wereld vertalen in mode creaties. Het mooie aan de afstudeershows en werken met jonge talenten is dat het eindeloos blijft inspireren. Ondanks de ‘alles is al een keer gedaan’ uitspraak en dat er geen radicale veranderingen in de modevormgeving meer plaats vinden, weet de jongste generatie met hun werk een vertaling te maken naar de huidige tijdsgeest. Na tien jaar werken met jong talent hebben we veel voorbij zien komen, daarbij zien we dat nieuwe generatie modeontwerpers ons keer op keer iets vertellen over de tijdsgeest en dat de collecties daardoor altijd vernieuwend aanvoelen.

Class of 2019 is a project that is developed specifically for the FASHIONCLASH Festival. The new festival dates (November 1-2-3) gave FASHIONCLASH the opportunity to visit all the Dutch graduation shows in the months of June / July to scout new talent. For this, FC got help from a number of scouts who were all successful former participants of FASHIONCLASH Festival. With the help of the scouts Nina Willems, Marlou Breuls and SCHUELLER DE WAAL, a selection has been made of a number of works.

These are presented in the form of an exhibition, not a "best of", but a translation of the zeitgeist of the 2019 generation.

SCOUTS Marlou Breuls (1991) is a Dutch fashion designer based in Amsterdam. Breuls graduated in Fashion Design in 2016 at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute (AMFI), after which she developed her own label in 2016. With her graduation collection, she won the Lichting 2016 audience prize. Breuls currently works at Stone Fashion as a technical designer for the outerwear label Creenstone. She also works regularly for Icelandic singer Björk and American singer Sia. Nina Willems (1986) graduated in 2011 from the Theatrical Performance course at the Maastricht Theater Academy.

Before that, she studied Neuropsychology for three years at the University of Utrecht. After graduating, she worked as a director's assistant at the Veenfabriek, Toneelgroep Maastricht and made her own solo performances for FASHIONCLASH, Over het IJ Festival and Cultura Nova. Nina explores the boundary between theater and science.

SCHUELLER DE WAAL equals fashion designduo Philipp Schueller and Rens de Waal. The label and design studio SDW create fashion statements and capsule collections in which they express their belief in Fashion as Therapy.

SCOUTS Marlou Breuls (1991) is een Nederlandse modeontwerpster die gevestigd is in Amsterdam. Breuls studeerde in 2016 af in Fashion design aan het Amsterdams Fashion Instituut (AMFI), waarna ze in 2016 haar eigen label ontwikkelde.

The scouts look back with great pleasure on the fresh mentality of this researching generation of designers. They do not shy away from engaging in social issues and dare to be vulnerable with their personal stories. The recurring topics at all academies were sustainability, craftsmanship, gender diversity, LGBTQI + community, escapism and well-being. In addition, the designers noticed were those who take time and pay attention to the making of clothing instead of making fashion.

This generation is also concerned about the influence of technology on people and society. The feeling that this generation mainly gives us is the urge to create togetherness.

It is beautiful to see that ‘The Class of 2019’ does not stand for a generation of fashion students seeking to become the next star designer, but curious creative minds longing for collaborating with each other, addressing and aiming to solve social and environmental matters and together making an impact through fashion."

“These designers think it is very important to treat clothing with care. They pay attention to their material choices, to the techniques used (knitting, embroidery), to the people who will wear their clothing. They make personal pieces that you can wear for life. They look for extremes; what is feminine, what is masculine, how far can you go in it? Can you let go of the structures and look at the people behind them?

Furthermore, this generation is actively looking for their roots and asking how it shapes their identity. They investigate their cultural background, the subcultures in which they were raised.

They take those influences and mold them into new forms."

This exhibition is a modest summary of the findings of the scouts. Surprising stories, forms and concepts have been discovered at all academies. A number of graduates from 2019 such as Sophie Wantia, Esra Copur, Iris Otten and Marie Lamberechts have been selected for other FASHIONCLASH Festival program components. The Body Alumni, the graduates of MAFAD Academy from Maastricht, will present their collections during the Show program on Saturday, November 2.

The scouts kijken met veel plezier terug op de frisse mentaliteit van deze onderzoekende generatie ontwerpers. Ze schuwen niet het aangaan van sociaal-maatschappelijke onderwerpen en durven zich kwetsbaar op te stellen met hun persoonlijke verhalen. De terugkerende onderwerpen bij alle academies waren duurzaamheid, ambacht, gender diversiteit, LGBTQI+ gemeenschap, escapisme en welzijn. Daarnaast vielen de ontwerpers op die tijd en aandacht nemen voor het maken van kleding in plaats van het maken van mode. De invloed van technologie op mens en samenleving houdt deze generatie ook bezig. Het gevoel dat deze generatie ons vooral geeft is hun verlangen om saamhorigheid te creëren.

“Deze ontwerpers vinden het van groot belang om aandachtig met kleding om te gaan. Ze geven aandacht aan hun materiaalkeuzes, aan de gebruikte technieken (breien, borduren), aan de mensen die hun kleding gaan dragen. Ze maken persoonlijke stukken, die je voor het leven kan dragen.” Ze zoeken extremen op; wat is vrouwelijk, wat is mannelijk, hoe ver kun je daarin gaan? Kun je de constructies loslaten en kijken naar de mens daarachter?”

Verder gaat deze generatie actief op zoek naar hun roots, en bevragen hoe die hun identiteit vormgeeft.

Ze onderzoeken hun culturele achtergrond, de subculturen waarin ze zijn opgevoed.

Deze expositie is een bescheiden samenvatting van de bevindingen van de scouts. Bij alle academies zijn er verrassende verhalen, vormen en concepten ontdekt. Every year there are thousands of fashion graduates all over the world who translate their dreams and view of the world into fashion creations. That is the great thing about the graduation shows and working with young talents, it continues to inspire endlessly. Despite the ‘everything has already been done once’ and that there are no radical changes in the shapes of fashion, the younger generation knows how to translate their work into the current spirit of the times.

After ten years of working with young talent, we have seen a lot of different things, among which we’ve noticed that the new generation of fashion designers repeatedly tell us something about the zeitgeist and that this causes the collections to always feel innovative and progressive.

The fashion designers that shape this exhibition see fashion as a mission.

They belong to a generation of designers who explore the boundaries of their discipline and question the system and the fashion industry. With their works, they operate in the transdisciplinary domains of fashion, social design, visual arts and they always work with the final user/consumer. This way, they introduce contemporary themes such as inclusiveness, gender, consumption and thus new narratives for fashion.

Gino Anthonisse investigates the role of wonder in his work by creating an alternative reality. The monumental silhouettes from his previous work have a sculptural character. In his new work, he will further implement this by making clothing that no longer needs a body.

An experiment where performance, clothing, photography and sound come together to form sculptural "life-size collage installations".

De sprekers zijn modeontwerpers die hun artistieke vaardigheden weten te combineren met ondernemerschap en zo introduceren zij nieuwe duurzame businessmodellen voor mode.

'Obroni Wawu', ook bekend als 'Death White Men's Clothing' is een tijddocument dat het leven van tweedehands kledingmateriaal onderzoekt in de context van Ghana en Nederland. De Nederlandse perceptie van het doneren van tweedehands kleding wordt als een positieve oplossing gezien - de donateur helpt de armen en vermijdt dat kleding naar het stort gaat. Maar er is weinig bekend of gecommuniceerd over wat er gebeurt met de gedoneerde tweedehandskleding. Welke impact heeft de 'gedoneerde' kleding op de mensen die het ontvangen?

The project looks at sport as a system which privileges and excludes certain social relations and which reproduces conservative values of an age gone by. By considering the body as a learning tool, the research investigates how sport systems impact our mode of thinking and social interaction. In response to that, Multiform develops an education tool kit, consisting of new uniforms and sport games, the kit offers innovation for the teaching of inclusivity and discussion about diversity within education.

Combining her educational background with her fascination for the performing arts, she positions herself as a contemporary jewelry artist. She is fascinated by the influence an object has on our daily “performance” or as we can say the construction of our own identity. By redefining everyday objects, in materiality and functionality, she constantly explores the boundaries of body ornaments. Questioning and reflecting on present-day systems are her main source of inspiration. She believes everything is a jewel, everybody is a performer and everywhere is a stage.

People always want more, more and more. We measure our happiness with the amount of wealth we possess. We think we can achieve an improved version of ourselves by collecting more items. It will never be enough. But when does this end? Does it even have an end? In our film the clothing has the leading effect on the character. The desire for wanting more made the character dependent on the clothing. It has lost its function to think, making it a puppet in the grasps of the clothing.

I start my process by making observations in society. I observe how people dress, behave and how this communicates to me. By doing this, I’m able to reflect on the fashion system itself and general logical ways of doing. In my work I try to make sense of all this chaos by making my own rules and systems, mostly by inventing a logic that is not actually logical. My work consists of practical visuals, taken out of their context, bright colors and a focus on materiality and layers.

Ik observeer hoe mensen zich kleden, gedragen en hoe dit overkomt op mij. Door dit te doen, kan ik nadenken over het modesysteem zelf en algemene logische manieren van doen. In mijn werk probeer ik al deze chaos te begrijpen door mijn eigen regels en systemen te maken, meestal door een logica te bedenken die niet echt logisch is. Mijn werk bestaat uit praktische visuals uit hun context gehaald, felle kleuren en een focus op materialiteit en lagen.

Mensen willen altijd meer, meer en meer. We meten ons geluk met de hoeveelheid rijkdom die we hebben. We denken dat we een verbeterde versie van onszelf kunnen bereiken door meer items te verzamelen. Het zal nooit genoeg zijn.

Maar wanneer eindigt dit? Heeft het zelfs een einde?

In onze film heeft de kleding het leidende effect op het personage. Het verlangen om meer te willen maakt het karakter afhankelijk van de kleding. Het heeft zijn functie verloren om na te denken, waardoor het een marionet in de greep van de kleding is.

ANELIA ANTOVA BULGARIAN @ANELIYANTOVA My work concept is based on the fragile connection between some sort of my own fairy tale and the reality which we are occupying. I aim to create a world where the boundaries are so flexible that they can stretch to the end of the Universe. The design should provoke delicately - not too loud but also not too silent. In the end it is a dance between me, the clothes and the whole universe. Everyone is invited to join.

NL BUMAGN staat voor authenticiteit door middel van kleurrijk denken, plezier halen uit het bedenken van verhalen en karakters die zich focussen op de absurditeit van het leven en de worstelingen van de menselijke conditie laten zien vanuit een humoristische invalshoek. Aan de hand van een duurzame aanpak streven we ernaar de hedendaagse modecultuur uit te dagen, evenals het algemene beeld van wat duurzame mode is of zou kunnen zijn.

Bij BUMAGN eten we iedere dag een lepel kleur voor het ontbijt en geloven we dat mode leuk moet zijn en creëren we de mogelijkheid om in volledige vrijheid je eigen individualiteit uit te drukken.

Hiske Hottinga is a sustainable fashion designer, based in Rotterdam. In time, Hiske started to learn the importance of fashion and communication. In 2016 she graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academie as a creating pioneer in fashion. Using her passion for nature and her fascination of the diversity of beauty in all her strangest and sometimes even absurd forms, she started her own studio in 2017. Fashion allows her to unravel expressions in a language none are familiar with, occasionally herself included. ''Syllables known by everyone, comprehended by none''.

HAESUNG BONG SOUTH-KOREAN @HAESUNG_BONG Haesung Bong is a native of Seoul, South Korea and moved to Europe upon graduating from Kookmin University; where he studied at La Cambre in Brussels, Central Saint Martins in London, and Esmod in Paris with all-expenses-paid scholarships from winning the top prize for fashion competitions such as AOF International Competition, Kolon Fashion Awards, and Korea Fashion Design Awards. Since being selected as a top 10 finalist for the Mango Fashion Awards, he attained his masters’ degree in Fashion Design from ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem, The Netherlands and also started his fashion label.

Jimmy Junichi Sugiura is a craftsman, designer and artist who has a background in the bespoke shoe industry and creating works that locate at the intersection between design and sculptural art. He started his career as a collector of antique footwear and always gets great inspiration from the history of shoe design and developed the core idea of “Classic as Simulacra, but Avant-Garde”; totally classic but there is no original copied from. He questions the radically challenging possibilities of shoes, both as a human ergonomic tool and conceptual sculpture by throwing questions to viewers and ask them to rethink and debate “Is this a shoe?”, “What is a shoe?”.

JOSE ALEJANDRO JARAMILLO NARANJO COLOMBIAN @ALEJOJNAJ The Project talks about primitive knowledge and part of my moral education as scout, in opposition to a society which has generated a consumerism thrifty of time, eliminating manual works. Part of the moral is expressed by means of handwritten Morse codes, under tissues that are made with electronic cables that show the fusion between my knowledge, the manual (such as knotting and weaving), and the automated society in which we develop. Trying to understand the society as a system that has generated a consumerism thrifty of time, where actions and manual processes have been replaced by technology an automation.

Pushing traditional aesthetic boundaries; her work is multifaceted in its engagement with the worlds of fashion, art, craft and performance.

Jo is constantly seeking to re-describe, abstract and transform the generic fashion template to find another realm for fashion to exist beyond superficial commercial trends by using social observation, psychology and philosophy that relates to real human life experience. NATASCHA WANVESTRAUT ITALIAN @NWOFFICIAL_ Natascha Wanvestraut is an Italian womenswear designer and illustrator. Growing up in the South of Italy, Naples, she was surrounded in a family environment by creativity, passion for making clothes and fine art, which was of great influence and inspiration on her work.

Her artistic sensibility blends playful approach with a sophisticated spirit, combining minimal lines and unexpected details.

Handmade craftsmanship, refined fabrics and the use of color are essential to Natascha’s eclectic vision. The effect is modern and quirky, naive and feminine. Through her creations she wants to transmit a vibrant energy leading to uniqueness and individuality.

Een deel van de moraal komt tot uiting in handgeschreven morsecodes, onder weefsels die zijn gemaakt met elektronische kabels die de fusie laten zien tussen mijn kennis, het handwerk (zoals knopen en weven) en de geautomatiseerde samenleving waarin we ons ontwikkelen. A COLLABORATION BETWEEN FASHIONCLASH AND STUDIO EUROPA

With Dress to Protest, FASHIONCLASH and STUDIO EUROPA are calling on young people to participate in design workshops that bring people from different backgrounds together to exchange ideas about Europe.

With the imaginative power of fashion, they shape their visions and personal stories about Europe.

What do young people think about Europe and today's challenges? Dress to Protest does not literally call for protest, but in a playful way it focuses on awareness that the clothing we wear tells, consciously and unconsciously, something about our identity, values and norms. The project makes a connection with the verbal and non-verbal communication strength of fashion. Fashion as a means to tell stories, to represent personal identity, to share visions and to put urgent issues on the agenda.

Because fashion as a second skin tells your environment what relationship you want to have with it and at the same time shows what your heart beats for.

Dress to Protest uses fashion as a beautiful instrument to actually mean something in the debate on political, humanistic and social issues in Europe.

DRESS TO PROTEST DURING FASHIONCLASH FESTIVAL Since April 2019 several Dress to Protest workshops where organized. In this workshop young people from Maastricht and the region where invited to create their own Dress to Protest outfit.

Giovanni Brand, Lieve Fikkers, Finn Borath and several others students from the Maastricht Institute of the Performing Arts will create an installation that will showcase the workshop results. In addition, they will develop the Opening performance (Friday Nov. 1) for FASHIONCLASH Festival.

DRESS TO PROTEST DURING MAASTRICHT EUROPE DAYS: PRESENTATION 8 DECEMBER 2019

Wat vinden jongeren van Europa en de uitdagingen van vandaag? Dress to Protest roept niet letterlijk op tot protest, maar richt zich op een speelse manier op het bewustzijn dat de kleding die we dragen bewust en onbewust iets vertelt over onze identiteit, waarden en normen.

Het project legt een verband met de verbale en non-verbale communicatiekracht van mode. Mode als middel om verhalen te vertellen, om persoonlijke identiteit te vertegenwoordigen, om visies te delen en om urgente kwesties op de agenda te zetten. Omdat mode als tweede huid je omgeving vertelt welke relatie je ermee wilt hebben en tegelijkertijd laat zien waar je hart voor klopt.

- Research: Our goal is to become a Centre of Excellence for multi-disciplinary Europe-focused research with a clear societal impact. We want to promote and build a wealth of knowledge that is increasingly accessible to the media, policymakers and the general public.

- Events: all year round, from interactive lectures to street parties and festivals, we offer citizens the chance to take part in the great European dialogue. Join in! Listen to experts, discuss, contribute, argue and become a part of this living lab working on the solutions for our future.

Within the events branch we hope: to stimulate a creative conversation through different disciplines.

What is the mission of Studio Europa?

Our mission is to stimulate active, critical debate with citizen engagement at its core through year-round events open to all.

You have several interdisciplinary projects, why are you looking for a connection with art, music, fashion, etc.?

These disciplines are easily accessible.

This way we can forms that are known to make the topics that are important to us tangible for the general public.

In addition, culture is meant to look at issues and it is also easier to reach different target groups.

Dress to Protest is a project by Studio Europa and FASHIONCLASH to start the dialogue around Europe through fashion.

What is so important about this project and what do you want to do with the results?

What is so important for Studio Europa in this project is that we will reach more young people through the workshops and the attention around it. Young people are the future, but politics is often a "far from their bed" show. Thanks to this project, we can consciously focus on euregional and regional young people from different backgrounds, interests and educational levels and bring them together to create awareness and talk about political topics.

During the opening of FASHIONCLASH Festival 2019, the results of the Dress to Protest workshops will be presented by performers from the Maastricht Theater Academy. Then we invite designers to make a Collection of Europe. They come to Maastricht for a week at the end of November to work here in the Fashion Lab. These results will be presented during the Maastricht Europe Days on 8 December 2019.

One of the workshops will take place during 75 years of Freedom in Maastricht, which is celebrated on 12-13 September and where all kinds of activities are organized that are linked to the liberation activities.

Wat is Studio Europa?

Aangezien Maastricht een echte Europese stad is met een mix van talen en culturen, een universiteitsstad is met 50% Europese studenten en het Erfgoedlabel voor het Verdrag van Maastricht draagt, is het de geboortestad van de Europese Unie zoals we die nu kennen. De stad realiseert zicht dat we dit levendig moeten houden, aangezien er nog altijd ruimte voor verbetering is. Dit willen we samen met burgers en inwoners doen door middel van de volgende 3 doelstellingen.

- Onderzoek: Maastricht wil het kenniscentrum zijn voor multidisciplinair onderzoek naar Europese thema’s. En die kennis willen we breed toegankelijk en toepasbaar maken in de maatschappij. Voor media, beleidsmakers en bovenal Europese burgers.

- Erfgoedlabel & Europa-archief: Maastricht als geboortestad van het huidige Europa draagt trots het Europees Erfgoedlabel voor het Verdrag van Maastricht. Dit verdrag uit 1992 legde de basis voor de Europese Unie en het Europa zoals wij het vandaag de dag kennen. Die geschiedenis brengen we tot leven met allerlei (onderwijs)activiteiten en evenementen voor iedereen.

- Evenementen: Het hele jaar door organiseert Studio Europa evenementen, van interactieve lezingen tot straatfestivals. We nodigen iedereen van harte uit om deel te nemen, mee te discussiëren, bij te dragen, en onderdeel te worden van de actieve werkplaats van Europa. In Maastricht werken we samen aan oplossingen voor onze toekomst.

Binnen de events tak hopen we: een creatief gesprek te stimuleren door middel van verschillende disciplines.

Jullie hebben meerdere interdisciplinaire projecten, waarom zoeken jullie de connectie met kunst, muziek, mode, etc. op?

Deze disciplines zijn laagdrempelig en toegankelijkheid. Zo kunnen we d.m.v. vormen die bekend zijn de onderwerpen die voor ons van belang zijn tastbaar maken voor het grote publiek.

Daarnaast is cultuur bedoeld om vraagstukken te bekijken en bereikt het ook makkelijker verschillende doelgroepen.

Dress to Protest is een project van Studio Europa en FASHIONCLASH om het dialoog rondom Europa te starten door middel van mode. Wat is zo belangrijk aan dit project en wat willen jullie met de uitkomsten hiervan doen?

Wat voor Studio Europa zo belangrijk is bij dit project, is dat we door middel van de workshops en de aandacht eromheen meer jongeren bereiken.

Jongeren zijn de toekomst, maar politiek is vaak een ‘ver van hun bed’ show. Dankzij dit project kunnen we ons bewust richten op euregionale en regionale jongeren met verschillende achtergronden, interesses en opleidingsniveaus en hen samenbrengen om bewustzijn te creëren en te praten over politieke onderwerpen.

Welke projecten staan er nog op het programma?

Bij de Europese verkiezingen blijven de jongeren thuis, terwijl zij juist pro-Europa zijn. Daarnaast gaan ze voor bepaalde onderwerpen wel de straat op, dat is voor jongeren de manier om hun stem te laten horen. Ze zijn krachtig. We willen ze stimuleren en laten nadenken over wat Europa betekent binnen de thema’s identiteit, duurzaamheid, migratie, bewegingsvrijheid, vrijheid van meningsuiting, gender gelijkheid, etc. Dit zijn de formaliteiten die veiligheid waarborgen en de mate van duurzaamheid reguleren. Jongeren maken een keuze voor de toekomst en mode is daarin een grote speler.

Met Dress to Protest roepen FASHIONCLASH en STUDIO EUROPA jongeren op deel te nemen aan ontwerpworkshops die mensen met verschillende achtergronden samenbrengen om ideeën over Europa uit te wisselen.

Met de verbeeldingskracht van mode geven ze vorm aan hun visies en persoonlijke verhalen over Europa.

Because Maastricht is a true European city with a mix of languages and cultures, a university city with 50% European students and has the heritage label for the Maastricht Treaty, it is the birthplace of the European Union as we know it today. The city realizes that we have to keep this alive, because there is still room for improvement. We want to do this together with citizens and residents through the following 3 objectives.

Which projects are still on the program?

Young people stay at home in the European elections, while they are pro-Europe. In addition, they do take to the streets for certain subjects, which is the way for young people to make their voices heard. They are powerful. We want to encourage them to think about what Europe means in terms of identity, sustainability, migration, freedom of movement, freedom of expression, gender equality, etc. These are the formalities that guarantee safety and regulate the degree of sustainability.

Young people make a choice for the future and fashion is a major player in this.

Tijdens de opening van FASHIONCLASH Festival 2019 worden de resultaten van de Dress to Protest workshops gepresenteerd door performers van de Toneelacademie Maastricht.

Daarna nodigen we designers uit om een Collection of Europe te maken. Zij komen eind november voor een week naar Maastricht om hier in het Fashion Lab te werken. Deze resultaten worden gepresenteerd tijdens de Maastricht Europe Days op 8 december 2019.

Een van de workshops zal plaats vinden tijdens 75 jaar Vrijheid in Maastricht, wat gevierd wordt op 12-13 september en waarbij allerlei activiteiten worden georganiseerd die gekoppeld zijn aan de bevrijdingsactiviteiten.

MIEP’S Branko is een van mijn gemakkelijkere doelen. Ik weet dat hij van honden houdt, maar nogmaals, ik ben geen gewone hond. Ik ben Miep, de Office Manager.

Uiteindelijk denk ik dat Branko het geweldig zal vinden als ik de catwalk zou lopen in een van de 5 shows, omdat de pers van me houdt en het goed is voor de media-aandacht, omdat dit FASHIONCLASH nog meer inclusief maakt en wie houdt daar niet van?

It is almost that time of the year again. An exciting but busy time, at least for me as Office Manager. Of course, I am talking about the FASHIONCLASH Festival. The greatest project for young designers and creatives in The Netherlands. The project I have been wanting to be part of since 2012, but only got to sit front row and walk the runway at 1 time before and honestly, that was only because I made sure my mom heard me barking for her.

Branko is one of my easier targets. I know he likes dogs, but then again, I am not just your average dog. I’m Miep, the Office Manager. In the end, I think Branko will love it if I would walk the catwalk in one of the 5 shows, because the press loves me and it will be good for media attention as this would make FASHIONCLASH an even more inclusive company and what is not to love about that?

Now the real challenge is Jessie. I don’t know what to think of her. Sometimes she puts her hand out to pet me, but when I want to sniff her, she pulls away.

What does that mean in human language? This relationship can definitely be labeled as ‘it’s complicated’. Jessie often eats cheese, which is my favorite snack.

She even puts this delicious fig stuff on there. I try my best to grab a piece of her cheese during lunchtime, but I think she doesn’t really want to share. The only thing I can do here is not ask for cheese anymore. Maybe that will make her like me more.

Then we have Maxime who, just like Branko, loves media attention. Which is not that strange as she takes care of communication for FASHIONCLASH. Maxime actually really likes me, but I don’t trust her. Why? Because she has two cats at home. She has tried to bring them to the office, but I won’t allow it. Who needs arrogant cats, when you have me?! She does like to cuddle and I know she misses those stinky hairballs at work, so maybe I need to suck up to her a bit more. Who knows, maybe she will put my face on the next FASHIONCLASH poster.

Het is weer zover. Een spannende maar drukke tijd, tenminste voor mij als Office Manager. Natuurlijk heb ik het over het FASHIONCLASH-Festival.

Het beste project voor jonge ontwerpers en creatieven in Nederland. Het project waar ik sinds 2012 deel van wil uitmaken, maar waar ik tot nu toe alleen nog maar 1 keer eerder op de eerste rij mocht zitten en op de catwalk mocht lopen en eerlijk gezegd, dat was alleen omdat ik ervoor zorgde dat mijn moeder me hoorde blaffen.

And finally, there is Laura. What can I say. Laura and I are bff’s. She babysits me when my parents need a break from me, she always keeps a bit of lunch on the side for me, she cuddles me, lets me lick her nose from time to time and she knows the true value of my job title. I love Laura, even though she squeezes me a bit too hard sometimes. I assume that’s because she can’t control her enthusiasm. There is no need to think about strategy here, she wants me to join my team everywhere they go.

So, there you have it. I have till the 1st of November to get my priorities straight and set the plan into motion. Hoe dan ook, ik heb gewerkt aan een strategie om ervoor te zorgen dat ik weer op de catwalk kom. Het was cruciaal voor mij als Office Manager om mijn personeel te observeren en erachter te komen wat ik moest doen. Ik dacht dat mama en papa (Nawie en Laurens) het makkelijkst te overtuigen zouden zijn, maar ik kan niet vergeten dat zij ook de mensen zijn die me huisarrest kunnen geven. Ze zetten me soms gemakkelijk bij oma af en doen dan alsof ik op minivakantie ga. We weten allemaal dat ik niet voor de gek kan worden gehouden, dus besloot ik om extra lief en gehoorzaam te zijn voor papa en mama, maar een beetje gemener voor oma - Sorry omie, zodat ze niet wil dat ik kom logeren tegen de tijd van het festival. Ik ben daarnaast extra braaf geweest door te luisteren en mijn stem niet zoveel te verheffen op kantoor.

Dan hebben we Maxime die, net als Branko, van media-aandacht houdt. Wat niet zo vreemd is, want ze zorgt voor de communicatie voor FASHIONCLASH. Maxime vindt me echt heel leuk, maar ik vertrouw haar niet. Waarom? Omdat ze thuis twee katten heeft. Ze heeft geprobeerd ze naar kantoor te brengen, maar ik sta het niet toe. Wie heeft arrogante katten nodig, als je mij hebt?! Ze houdt van knuffelen en ik weet dat ze die stinkende haarballen op het werk mist, dus misschien moet ik wat meer bij haar slijmen. Wie weet zet ze mijn gezicht wel op de volgende FASHIONCLASH-poster.

En ten slotte is er Laura. Wat kan ik zeggen. Laura en ik zijn bff’s. Ze past op me als mijn ouders een pauze van me nodig hebben, ze houdt altijd een beetje lunch voor me over, ze knuffelt me, laat me van tijd tot tijd aan haar neus likken en ze weet de echte waarde van mijn functie.

Ik hou van Laura, hoewel ze me soms een beetje te hard knijpt. Ik neem aan dat dat komt omdat ze haar enthousiasme niet kan beheersen. Het is niet nodig om hier aan strategie te denken, ze wil dat ik ga waar mijn team gaat.

Dus daar heb je het. Ik heb tot 1 november om mijn prioriteiten op orde te krijgen en het plan in gang te zetten.

Anyway, I have been working on a strategy to make sure I will return to the catwalk again. It was crucial for me as Office Manager to observe my personnel and figure out what to do next. I figured that mom and dad (Nawie and Laurens) would be easiest to persuade, but I can’t forget that they are also the humans that can put me on house-arrest. They will easily drop me off at grandma’s and pretend I’m going on a mini holiday. We all know I can’t be played for a fool, so I decided to be extra sweet and obedient to mom and dad, but a little meaner to grandma Sorry nanna, so that she doesn’t want me to sleep over by the time of the Festival. Besides that, I have been extra good by listening and not raising my voice at the office as much. I call that: Miep 1 - Personnel 0.

Nu is de echte uitdaging Jessie. Ik weet niet zo goed wat ik van haar moet denken. Soms steekt ze haar hand uit om me te aaien, maar als ik dan aan haar wil ruiken, trekt ze haar hand weg. Wat betekent dat in mensentaal? Deze relatie kan zeker worden bestempeld als 'het is ingewikkeld'. Jessie eet vaak kaas, wat mijn favoriete snack is. Ze doet er zelfs dit heerlijke vijgenspul op. Ik doe mijn best om tijdens de lunch een stukje van haar kaas te pakken, maar ik denk dat ze niet echt met mij wil delen. Het enige wat ik hier kan doen is niet meer om kaas vragen. Misschien zal ze daardoor meer van mij gaan houden.
