INTRO FASHIONCLASH presenteert de ‘Fashion Makes Sense Award’ (FMSA), een terugkerende stimuleringsprijs voor jonge ontwerpers. Het doel van het project is enerzijds talentontwikkeling en ondersteuning van duurzame ontwerpers en anderzijds een breed publiek bewustmaken van vraagstukken gerelateerd aan duurzaamheid. FMSA is in het leven geroepen in samenwerking met Provincie Limburg en is in 2017 gelanceerd tijdens FASHIONCLASH Festival in Maastricht. FMSA is bedoeld voor de nieuwe generatie, duurzame ontwerpers en labels met vernieuwende ideeën. Deze prijs is bedoeld om veelbelovend talent te stimuleren om na te denken over duurzaamheid en ondersteuning te bieden in het ontwikkelen van een verantwoorde collectie.

FASHIONCLASH presents the ‘Fashion Makes Sense Award’ (FMSA), a returning motivation prize for young designers. This project aims to develop talent and support sustainable designers on the one hand and raise awareness of sustainability related issues with a larger audience on the other.

FMSA has been brought to life in cooperation with the Province of Limburg and was launched during the FASHIONCLASH Festival 2017 in Maastricht. FMSA is meant to motivate and stimulate promising talent to think about sustainability and to offer young talents support in developing a durable collection.

Na de eerste editie van Fashion Makes Sense Award in 2017 was het duidellijk dat het thema duurzaamheid onder veel jonge ontwerpers leeft en dat zij hierin graag een stuk verantwoordelijkheid op zich nemen. De aanmeldingen stroomden wederom van over de hele wereld binnen en daarom heeft FASHIONCLASH ervoor gekozen om Fashion Makes Sense Award als project jaarlijks terug te laten komen.

After the first edition of the Fashion Makes Sense Award in 2017 it was clear that sustainability is a vivid topic amongst young designers and they will gladly take responsibility in this. Applications from all over the world flooded our inbox again and that is why FASHIONCLASH decided to develop the Fashion Makes Sense Award further as a returning annual project.

Out of all the applications FASHIONCLASH has chosen 10 designers that are in the running for a prize. The FMSA consists out of two awards: the jury prize worth €2.500,- and the public prize worth €500,-! The winner of the jury prize will use these funds to create a sustainable collection, which he/she will present during the FASHIONCLASH Festival in 2019. The winning designers will be announced during the IAF Festive Fashion Dinner on October 9th 2018.

Uit alle aanmeldingen heeft het FASHIONCLASH team 10 ontwerpers gekozen die kans maken op een prijs. De FMSA bestaat uit twee awards: de juryprijs van €2.500,- en de publieksprijs van €500,-! De winnaar van de juryprijs zal met het geldbedrag een duurzame collectie ontwerpen die hij/zij mag presenteren tijdens het FASHIONCLASH Festival in 2019.

De winnende ontwerpers zullen tijdens het IAF Festive Fashion Dinner op 9 oktober 2018 bekend worden gemaakt.

Winnaar van de Fashion Makes Sense Award 2017, Birute MaĹžeikaite, verteld ons hoe het is om de Fashion Makes Sense Award te winnen en hoe deze titel haar persoonlijk en haar werkproces heeft beĂŻnvloed.

Winner of the Fashion Makes Sense Award 2017, Birute MaĹžeikaite, tells us what it is like to win the Fashion Makes Sense Award and how this title affected her personally and her work process.

Door het winnen van de Fashion Makes Sense Award ben ik duurzaamheid als een vak en medium voor expressie verder gaan onderzoeken. Duurzaam werken is niet de makkelijke route, maar het is heel belonend en ik geloof dat beperkingen soms leiden tot innovatie en een breder arsenaal van creatieve oplossingen. Mensen die hier gepassioneerd voor zijn of werken in deze tak van de mode hebben een ondersteunende community en ik had niet verwacht zo warm te worden onthaald. In de online zee van jong talent kan men makkelijk verloren raken. Het winnen van deze award heeft mij gepusht om mijn werk bij meer mensen onder de aandacht te brengen.

Iedereen heeft het erover dat duurzaamheid de toekomst van de mode is, maar het is aan ons als ontwerpers om het realiteit te laten worden en aan de consument om dit met open armen te verwelkomen.

Winning the Fashion Makes Sense Award allowed me to further explore sustainability as a craft and as a medium for expression. Being sustainable is not the easy route, but it is definitely rewarding and I strongly believe that sometimes limitations lead to innovation and a broader range of creative solutions. People who are passionate about it or work in this branch of fashion have a very supportive community and I didn't expect such a warm welcome. In an online sea of young talents, one can get easily lost, and winning this award allowed me to push my works further into the range of view of many more people. Everyone points out that sustainability must be the future of fashion, but it is up to us as designers to make it reality and up to us as consumers to welcome the effort.

G N I C U D O R T IN S T S I L A N I F 0 1 THE Op 9 oktober worden de winnaars van de tweede editie van de Fashion Makes Sense Award bekendgemaakt tijdens het IAF Festive Fashion Dinner bij Chateau St. Gerlach. Met deze award wilt FASHIONCLASH ontwerpers die met een passie voor mensheid en omgeving creÍren graag motiveren. Dit jaar zijn 10 designers geselecteerd om hun werk aan het publiek en een jurypanel te laten zien, in de hoop uitgeroepen te worden tot de winnaar van de Fashion Makes Sense Award 2018. De designers vertellen je op de volgende pagina’s, in hun eigen woorden, over de collectie, wat hen inspireerde en op welke manier zij duurzaam werken.

On the 9th of October the winners of the second Fashion Makes Sense Award will be announced during the IAF Festive Fashion Dinner at Chateau St. Gerlach. With this award FASHIONCLASH wants to motivate the designers who create with a passion for humanity and the environment. This year, 10 designers were selected to show their work to the public and a jury panel in the hope of being named the winner of the Fashion Makes Sense Award 2018.

Na het volgen van de vooropleiding aan de kunstacademie ArtEZ, volgde ik de opleiding Fashion & Design. Hier ontdekte ik dat de focus in mijn werk op textiel en print ligt. Ik liep stage bij Mary Katrantzou om meer te leren op dit gebied. In juni 2018 studeerde ik af met mijn menswear collectie ‘Out of the Grey’.

EN After following the pre-course at the art Academy ArtEZ, I started studying Fashion & Design. Here I found out that I want to focus on textiles & prints in my work. I did an internship at Mary Katrantzou to gain more experience in this area.

In June 2018 I graduated with my menswear collection ‘Out of the Grey’.

‘Out of the Grey - part II’ is het vervolg op mijn afstudeercollectie aan ArtEZ. Voor de collectie heb ik mij laten inspireren door foto’s die ik maakte van muren met afgebladderde posters, die laag na laag onthuld worden. Deze gelaagdheid werd het startpunt voor mijn collectie. Ik beschouwde de posters als levensgrote collages en gebruikte deze techniek om mijn silhouetten te creëren. Mijn patronen scheurde ik in stukken om ze vervolgens weer samen te voegen.

Zo ontstond er een kledingstuk bestaande uit verschillende stoffen.

Op dezelfde wijze maakte ik mijn prints.

‘Out of the Grey - part II’ is the sequel of my graduation collection from ArtEZ. My collection originated from gathered pictures from my own photography. These pictures show walls displaying damaged posters, that reveal layer after layer. For me this layering tells a story, which was the starting point of my collection.

In my eyes, the posters could be seen as a life-sized collage. I used this collage technique to create my silhouettes. I cut up my patterns to pieces and put them back together again creating a garment consisting of different fabrics. The same technique can be seen in my print design.

a n a z r a C Paolo Ik ben een in Londen gevestigde herenkleding-ontwerper die dit jaar afgestudeerd is aan de Universiteit van Westminster. Tijdens mijn studie ontstond er een instinctieve focus op mijn 3-dimensionale creatieve expressie. Deze focus en het feit dat ik in eerste instantie met mijn handen werk, om de vormen die ik in mijn hoofd zag realiteit te laten worden als een uiting van mijn emoties, werden een essentieel onderdeel van mijn werk proces.

Mijn afstudeercollectie ‘’THE BOY YOU STOLE’’, is een zeer emotioneel en persoonlijk protest tegen het misbruik van macht.

EN I am a London based Menswear designer graduated from the BA at University of Westminster this year.

During my studies, my 3-dimensional creative expression became an instinctive focus and working primarily with my hands to create imagined shapes from my head into reality as an output of emotion, became essential to my working practice. My graduate collection “THE BOY YOU STOLE”, is a highly emotional personal protest against the abuse of power.

Tree-shrub waxing and the hand dyeing of found historical linen, vintage French toile and hessian is reinvented, contrasting with innovative pineapple, bamboo and banana textiles, in the place of unsustainable modern equivalents.

Waxen met boomschors en het met de hand verven van gevonden historisch linnen, vintage Frans tule en jute is opnieuw uitgevonden en innovatieve ananas, bamboe en banaan textiel komen in de plaats voor niet-duurzame, moderne varianten.

s r e m e e r Nienke C Mijn collectie ‘UNPICKING COTTON’ onderzoekt de complexiteit van de kledingindustrie, de geschiedenis van de katoenindustrie en hoe we de kledingindustrie tegenwoordig bekijken. Tijdens mijn onderzoek naar de geschiedenis van mode begon ik me dan ook af te vragen; Heeft ons koloniaal verleden invloed gehad op de mode-industrie van nu? En hoe bekijken we deze industrie nu? Ik besloot dat het moest kunnen om mijn collectie ethisch verantwoord te maken. Al snel kwam ik erachter dat het niet mogelijk was om mijn collectie zo eerlijk, ecologisch en slaaf vrij te maken als ik wilde. Na de realisatie dat het voor mij, op dit moment, niet mogelijk is om een eerlijke collectie te maken, besloot ik dat de collectie een protest moest worden om te vertellen hoe lastig dit voornemen is en om de complexiteit van de industrie te benadrukken.

EN My collection ‘UNPICKING COTTON’ explores the complexity of the fashion industry, the history of the cotton industry and our view on the current clothing industry.

During my research into the history of fashion I started to wonder; has our colonial past had an influence on the current fashion industry?

And how do we view this industry today? While designing my collection I decided that I should be able to create a sustainable collection.

Soon, I discovered that it was impossible to get my clothing as fairtrade, ecological and slave free as I wanted. After realizing that I, in this point and time, wasn’t able to do so, I decided to make a protest piece of my collection to get the message out and emphasize the complexity of this industry.

h c t i v o b o Gal Yak Gal Yakobovitch is een Israëlische modemaker wonend en werkend in New York. Hij probeert een brug te slaan tussen nieuwe biomaterialen en oude productiemethoden. Dit doet hij door middel van Makemoretcollective. com, wat een ‘open source’ kennis uitwisselingsplatform is dat samenwerkingen tussen biomateriaal ontwerpers en traditionele uitvoerders aanmoedigt.

‘Mijn afstudeercollectie ‘Makemoret Collective’ is een surfer collectie gemaakt van zelf ontwikkelde, afbreekbare materialen door middel van technieken die voornamelijk gebruikt worden bij de productie van zeilen en traditionele surfboards.

De productietechnieken zijn vertaald naar een DIY variant en de biomaterialen in deze collectie zijn allemaal natuurlijke, lokaal gevonden materialen die de originele giftige materialen nabootsen. Omdat ik zeer geloof in een transparant ontwerpproces zijn alle materialen en technieken verkrijgbaar op Makemoretcollective.com in de vorm van tutorials en workshops, zodat andere makers hiervan kunnen leren en dit kunnen delen.’

EN Gal Yakobovitch is an Israeli fashion maker working in NYC. Bridging the gap between new biomaterials and old manufacturing methods, doing so by creating Makemoretcollective.com which offers an open source knowledge exchange platform that encourages collaborations between biomaterial designers and traditional practitioners. ‘My graduate collection - Makemoret Collective is a surfwear collection made from self-made biodegradable materials through techniques traditionally used in industrial surfboard and sails production. The manufacturing techniques were translated to a DIY practice and the biomaterials used for the collection were all natural locally-sourced materials that mimic the original toxic materials used in surfboard and sail production.

Because I deeply believe in a transparent process of design all the materials and techniques were made available on Makemoretcollective. com in the form of tutorials and workshops for other makers to learn from and share.’

Sophie Roumans is de ontwerper en oprichter van het label ‘Roumans’.

In 2017 studeerde ze af aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht. Afgelopen januari is het label officieel van start gegaan en heeft ze al veel leuke opdrachten mogen volbrengen. Het label richt zich op duurzaamheid door zo veel mogelijk gebruik te maken van restmaterialen. Afgelopen juni mocht Roumans de eerste collectie presenteren tijdens de allereerste editie van M-ode Amsterdam. Hierna kreeg het label ook een mooi podium bij de Modefabriek. Protegé vertelt het verhaal over onze moderne hedendaagse cultuur. Het is een zoektocht naar rust, in ons hoofd en leven. Protegé is wijsheid voor allen.

‘Inspiratie haal ik uit verschillende rituelen en culturen tegenover het stressvolle en drukke bestaan. Een verzameling van wijsheden uit het verleden en de toekomst.’

EN Sophie Roumans is the designer and founder of the label ‘Roumans’.

In 2017 she graduated from the HKU University of the Arts. Roumans officially took off in January of this year and she has already completed various fun projects. The label focusses on sustainability by using as much rest material as possible.

This past June, Roumans was asked to present her collection at the first edition of M-ode Amsterdam. After this the label went on to present itself at the Modefabriek. ‘Protégé’ tells the story of our modern-day culture. It is a search for tranquility, in our minds and in life. ‘Protegé’ is wisdom for all. ‘I take inspiration from different rituals and cultures clashing with the busy life we lead.

It is a collection of wisdom from the past as well as the future.’

Yasmina Ajbilou heeft twee jaar als hoofdontwerper en creatieve director de leiding gehad bij het label Ajbilou Rosdorff. Zonder Rosdorff zet zij nu het label voort onder use.less. Een woordspeling, zoals de ontwerpen van Ajbilou altijd speels zijn. Door een mix van verschillende materialen, gebruik van gelaagdheid, een fris kleurenpalet met als inspiratie Benneton uit de jaren 80 en een spel van streetstyle en avant-garde, is haar stijl te omschrijven als street couture.

Stoffen en materialen zijn voor Ajbilou ontzettend belangrijk De visie van use.less draait om het hergebruik van restmaterialen en het omzetten van deze op een innovatieve manier.

Dit doet zij o.a. door samenwerkingen op te zoeken met bijvoorbeeld Enschede Textielstad, die stoffen opnieuw weven van afvalstoffen.

Ook gebruikt zij restmaterialen uit de industrie.

EN Yasmina Ajbilou has led the label Ajbilou Rosdorff as head of design and creative director, but Ajbilou will continue with the label without Rosdorff, under the name use.less.

A play on words, just like Ajbilou’s designs. A mix of materials, the use of layers, a fresh color pallet with 80’s Benneton vibes as inspiration, a play on streetstyle and avantgarde, her style can be categorized as ‘street couture’. Fabrics and materials are extremely important to Ajbilou. use.less vision is about the re-use of left-over materials presented in an innovative, young manner. She realizes this by taking on partnerships with, for example, Enchede Textielstad which weave fabrics from waste material. She also uses rest products from the industry.

IO L E O P A L LO Lola van Poelvoorde, 28 jaar oud en ik kom uit Breda, Nederland.

Ik ben dit jaar afgestudeerd aan het HKU in Utrecht in de richting Fashion Design. Sinds het begin van mijn studie had ik al een hele grote passie voor bijzondere stoffen en natuurlijke materialen. Ik liep stage bij BluePrint Amsterdam en leerde daar de kunst van het verven met natuurlijke stoffen maar vooral met natuurlijke indigo. Deze kennis en het vakmanschap heb ik ook toegepast bij mijn afstudeer collectie, genaamd: ‘Glitter Boys and Wild West Stories’. De feministische man van nu is, naar mijn mening, een klein beetje de weg kwijt. Mannen zoals Trump en Kanye West snappen het concept van gelijkheid nog niet helemaal en vertonen enorm veel overeenkomsten met de ouderwetse Rhinestone Cowboy. Mijn collectie brengt de belachelijkheid en lulligheid hiervan samen met glitter, indigo, pink en ruig (nep) leer.

EN I am Lola van Poelvoorde, 28 years old and born and raised in Breda, The Netherlands. I graduated in Fashion Design from the HKU in Utrecht this year. Since the beginning of my education I was already really passionate about special fabrics and natural materials.

I interned at BluePrint Amsterdam and this is where I learned about the art of dying with natural materials and specifically natural indigo. I have also applied this knowledge and craftmanship in my graduation collection, which is called: ‘Glitter Boys and Wild West Stories’. The feministic man of this day and age is, in my opinion, a bit lost. Men like Trump or Kanye West do not fully grasp the concept of equality and show a lot of comparison with the old-school Rhinestone Cowboy. My collection connects the ridiculousness with the sparkles, indigo, pink and rough (fake) leather.

N N A M R E SAND SANDERMANN is een nieuw Deens damesmerk, gebaseerd op een concept waarbij enkel lokale restmaterialen met een ‘zero waste’ aanpak worden gebruikt. ‘Stories of Stranded Lives’ is geïnspireerd op de vuurtorens aan de westkust van Denemarken. Het bezoeken van deze plekken zet aan tot nadenken over de barre leefomstandigheden aan de kust voor families van scheepsvaarders in de 18de eeuw.

Verloren mannen die ze niet meer zullen terugzien. Wakker worden met het geschreeuw van de mist en schipbreuken op het strand na een storm. Aanspoelende brakstukken terwijl de stilte luider wordt. Terwijl we ons verdiepten in deze geschiedenis, dachten we aan het contrast tussen toen en nu en zagen we een strand vol plastic voor ons. We lieten overschot materialen en fournituren, gestrand in hun eigen levenscyclus, deze collectie vormgeven met golvende lijnen, ‘dip dyed’ breisels en volumineuze silhouetten.

EN SANDERMANN is a new Danish womenswear brand, based on a concept of using only local waste materials with a zero-waste approach. “Stories of Stranded Lives” is inspired by lighthouses on the west coast of Denmark. Visiting these sites made one think about the tough coastal life in the 1800s and the living conditions for families related to sailors. Lost men they would never see again. Waking up to screams from the mist and broken ships on the beach after a storm.

Wrecked things washing upon the shore as the silence increases. Diving into this piece of history, we thought about the contrast of then and now, as we saw a beach full of plastic waste. We let deadstock materials and trimmings, stranded in their own lifecycle, shape this collection with wavy lines, dip dyed knits and voluminous silhouettes.

s r e d j i n S Laura Met mijn afstudeercollectie onderzoek ik een nieuw (onbestaand) modesysteem die uitgaat van verandering door plek in plaats van tijd. In dit systeem zouden mensen tijdens het wandelen door de stad in elke straat iets van verandering toe moeten passen om erbij te blijven horen. Elke straat is een nieuwe sociale groep en je wilt koste wat kost niet opvallen en dus erbij horen. Dit kan zijn dat je je mouw moet opstropen of bijvoorbeeld een derde broek aan moet trekken. Met deze collectie heb ik geprobeerd een nieuwe logica te ontwikkelen. Een systeem in de chaos terwijl het systeem zelf chaos is. Alles loopt door elkaar heen en eigenlijk is niets echt mogelijk. Het is als een reflectie op hoe ik de wereld, de mode en mijn eigen creatieve proces ervaar.

EN My collection is about a new (non-existing) fashion system that is based on change through place instead of time. In this system people should change something about their clothes every time they enter a new social area during a walk through the city. The obsession with change is directly linked with the obsession of belonging and not standing out; every street requires another action in order to belong and blend in. It could be that you need to roll up your sleeve or put on a third pair of pants for example. I tried to develop a new logic with this collection. A system in the chaos even though the system itself is chaos. Everything is in disorder and nothing is actually possible. It’s like a reflection on how I see the world, fashion and my own creative process.

Portugese ontwerper Jessica António is J-ANT.’s wonderkind die zichzelf heeft toegewijd aan het creëren van collecties waarbij ze streeft naar een herleving van vakmanschap in de huidige mode-industrie. Duurzaam en gepassioneerd door textiel manipulaties, weet Jessica deze twee factoren succesvol te combineren om hier exclusieve, gedetailleerde ‘zero waste’ kledingstukken van te maken, die gedragen worden door artiesten als Cata Pirata en andere modebewuste individuen. Aan de andere kant combineert ze de extravagante stukken met casual items van een uniek hoge kwaliteit, comfort en esthetiek, voornamelijk samengesteld door het gebruik van haute couture naaitechnieken. J-ANT.’s collecties zijn vaak geïnspireerd door texturen en kleur structuren die in de natuur voorkomen.

Opgegroeid op een boerderij op het platteland in de Algarve, Portugal, heeft ervoor gezorgd dat de designer een speciale band met de natuur heeft. We zien dan ook regelmatig de natuur, zoals koraal en fossiel geïnspireerde texturen en structuren, duidelijk terugkomen in Jessica’s ontwerpen.

EN Portuguese designer Jessica António is J-ANT.’s brainchild and she dedicates herself to creating collections that strive for a craftsmanship revival in the fashion industry of today. Supportive of sustainability and passionate for textile manipulations, Jessica successfully combines these two factors to create exclusive and detail-rich, zero-waste garments, worn by artists like Cata Pirata and other fashion forward individuals.

On the other hand, she combines these extravagant designs with casual pieces of unique high-quality, comfort and aesthetics, mostly assembled by haute couture sewing techniques. J-ANT.’s collections are often inspired by textures and color structures found in nature. Growing up on a farm in the countryside in the Algarve, Portugal, has ensured the designer a special bond with nature.

Kies je kleding zorgvuldig. Ruim je kast ieder seizoen uit en op. Zo kun je goed zien wat je al allemaal hebt en wat er nog ontbreekt. Investeer in stukken van hoge kwaliteit om toe te voegen aan je garderobe. Op deze manier zal je een persoonlijke stijl ontwikkelen, in plaats van klakkeloos de laatste trends te volgen.

Verricht onderzoek naar merken die geven om het milieu en bewust produceren. Kleren zijn niet gemaakt om weg te gooien, maar worden voornamelijk gemaakt om ons te beschermen of om ons een gevoel van zekerheid te geven.

TAKE CARE A lot of damage is done in the after care. Treat your clothes with love by not washing them too hot, too long or too often. Only iron when it is really necessary and use environment friendly detergent.

Vivienne Westwood’s statement is probably the best and only way to scale down the effect the clothing industry has on the environment.

Choose your clothing well. Do a closet clean-out every season to really see what you already have and what is missing. Invest in quality pieces to add to your wardrobe.

This way you’ll develop a personal style, rather than following the latest trends.

Do some research on brands that care about the environment and sustainable production. Clothes are not made to throw away, but rather produced to protect us, to give us a secure feeling.

Het programma van de FMSA 2018 bestaat uit een expositie van de outfits van de 10 finalisten, die in de Bijenkorf te Maastricht van 1 t/m 7 oktober zal plaatsvinden. De award ceremonie vindt plaats op 9 oktober in Chateau St. Gerlach tijdens het galadiner van de IAF World Fashion Convention.

The FMSA program contains an exhibition of the outfits from the finalists at the Bijenkorf in Maastricht from 1 till 7 October. The award ceremony takes place on 9th of October at Chateau St. Gerlach during the gala dinner of the IAF World Fashion Convention.
