Q&A:

By: Kelly Price

FMM: You are an award winning photographer, creative director, writer, producer / fashion film director and to our huge surprise you also pose for the camera. How do you manage your time and where do you get all these talents from? VP: I am a very organized person and I believe that anything can be accomplished if you set your goals high. Being at school I was always involved in extra curriculum activities. I don’t ever remember wandering aimlessly or just watching TV for hours and doing nothing. I was always busy, looking up to the scientists who changed the world, to the top musicians, designers – you kind of envy their accomplishments, but then you realize there is actually a lot you can do yourself with a little bit of effort and belief. Once you stop yourself from finding excuses, the sky is the limit. My personal strategy is based on making small steps and steadily progressing. I have photography books lying on the dining table that I read while I eat, then I have industry photo magazines that lay on the living room table and I browse through them while I watch TV. I have my workflow organized on my computer so then I check emails while I edit the images and my sketchpad is next to me, so I can write down ideas. Every year I order a black moleskin organizer, where I plan every single day making sure I’m meeting my targets, not missing

12 ||

any meetings, etc. I do work pretty much 24/7 and even in my sleep I’m coming up with some new concepts and all because I’m very passionate about my craft. Being very critical, I always try to do better than I did yesterday. By accepting your flaws, you grow and become better – that is my goal – to be the best I can be. FMM: What inspires you to also model? VP: I started modelling when I was 16 and participated in Miss Petite Teen International Model Contest. I won 3rd place and Best Model award. The experience of being in front of the camera gave me valuable feedback on how it actually feels to be a model, how to art direct my own photo shoots and communicate ideas to the photographer. This

helped me a lot when I began working on the other side of the camera as a fashion photographer. I was able to better communicate with my subjects and make them feel confident and beautiful. Besides I do a lot of self-portraits that allow me to channel my mood and energy through the images. Usually when I work with models I want them to play a certain character through the chosen wardrobe, makeup, hair and sets, as most of the time I don’t know them personally or well enough to create artistic portraits. In turn with my personal photo shoots I know exactly how I can deliver, what part of me I want to open to the public – it’s more about me as an artist and my personality not a fictional role. FMM: Do you remember your first shooting? Being a model or a photographer? VP: It was a small photo shoot I did with my sister in my hometown of Ventspils in Latvia. I came up with three characters I wanted to portray: they were a yacht lady with a silver case, who kind of went on a treasure hunting adventure ‘ala’ Ocean’s Twelve; then a ninja girl with the real samurai sword and a vintage poetess girl reading a book about Charlie Chaplin. It was super fun and this is when I realized I want to do more of this type of work. My very first photo shoots were done with my sister when I was 15 years old. She is also my all-time favorite muse; I have done photo series with her almost every year for the past ten years. FMM: What qualifies the lucky photographer to be able to shoot you? VP: I have done only couple of professional photo shoots as a model and it was a long time ago before I even started working as a professional photographer. This recent photo shoot I did was done by my very good friend and my first photo assistant Mariusz Jeglinski. I’ve been working with Mariusz for the past three years and I knew he would do a great job. Being a photographer myself

I am a perfectionist and I know modelling is not easy, you have to know your strength and deliver every single frame, reflect on the images and deliver better. I love when the models give me all they got – that’s why when I model myself I sometimes go overboard, I jump, I move, I give different emotions as I know how important is the attitude and the desire to perform at your best. It really makes a difference, makes the pictures look “alive.” FMM: Do you retouch your own modeling images? Being such a perfectionist is the process more difficult or easy? VP: Oh yes, I do! How did you know? Haha I told Mariusz – you shoot and I will edit. I have a very specific style of editing, it is quite edgy and it is all about the details. I’m a control freak and want everything to be perfect and if it’s not the way I do it – it is not perfect for me haha. FMM: Do you follow a diet plan? VP: My diet plan is called “listen to your body.” But on a serious note I don’t follow any specific diets and I cannot even count calories, I eat when I’m hungry; if throughout the day I had only two meals, because I was too busy to make lunch – I’ll be fine with that. But in general I try to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I don’t drink alcohol, I don’t smoke, I don’t eat fast food and I do CrossFit. Almost every day I cook at home and go out on Fridays and weekends. I love homemade salads and soups, and most of the times I grill chicken, fish or beef with a side of mashed potatoes or veggies. I also love dairy (specifically organic whole milk) and all kinds of fresh wholegrain breads. Occasionally I will make fresh squeezed juice or smoothies. Even though I don’t eat fatty cakes or pastries, I love to have cookies with coffee or tea in the evening watching RuPaul’s Drag Race Show. >>>>>

FMM: When do you feel most beautiful? VP: When I sing in the parking lot, haha FMM: What’s your favorite healthy treat? VP: I love going to the sauna, especially to the one with aromatherapy. Food wise, my favorite is fresh squeezed juice where I blend cranberries, oranges, apples and carrots. FMM: In your opinion what should be the very first step in pursuing a successful modeling career?VP: In modelling – your face and your body are your weapons, but if they’re not charged with the right energy and attitude – it is useless. I value professionalism, passion and ability to deliver on the highest level. I also love when models take risks, being spontaneous and open. If you have to shoot with that snake naked – go for it; if I ask you to pose with the ice cream – make me hungry

for it. I wish more models would be more open minded as that’s what the true super models are – confident, free and fearless. FMM: What does an aspiring model need to have before they can shoot with you? VP: I really love to see the diversity in model’s portfolio, the range. Not as much in terms of the different type of shoots she has done, like lifestyle, commercial, fashion, but more of the different characters, range of emotions. I want to see the ability of transformation. That is what is so spectacular about Kate Moss – she is like a plain canvas, but when you give her a character – she is phenomenal. I want to see the model, who can take directions really well, but also independent enough to take over and give me her best. I have had amazingly beautiful girls, who just couldn’t deliver, didn’t know their bodies enough to use them to >>>>>

their advantage and I had some girls, who were not as beautiful but had that drive and energy that made me excited. And if I’m excited – I’m going to capture some great pictures. FMM: Do you only work with professional models? VP: Not necessarily, I love working with professional models as then everyone is doing their job – they know exactly what they are doing which gives me the freedom to go even further – get some unique shots and push them to do something unexpected, something different. But sometimes if I like the look of a person – I would create a separate story for her/him. I have scouted a beautiful albino girl and came up with Marie Antoinette Fine Art Portrait shoot and those images ended up as the finalists in Exposure Photography book in 2011, then I worked with my CrossFit coach Reid Worthington as I loved his ginger hair and Viking body structure. After our shoot he was noticed by other photographers and appeared in fine art gallery projects. I really love scouting new faces and get inspired by strong personalities. For me – I can create art from anything as long as I’m excited about it. FMM: What do you think realistically are the odds of becoming the next supermodel? VP: I feel like the times of the original supermodels (Naomi, Eva, Hellen, Elle, Cindy, Claudia) are gone. Their charisma, lifestyle and talent became part of the modelling history. Nowadays, we have insanely beautiful Victoria Secret Angels, who make millions of dollars every year and appear in most of the ad campaigns and runway shows. To me they are beautiful no question, but I don’t see them as powerful role models. To my opinion there is a big wave coming up with non typical fashion

20 ||

M A G A Z I N E || FEBRUARY 2015

models and it is becoming a big trend. We see a lot of transgender models, plus size models, models with disabilities, mixed races. It is very empowering and refreshing; it makes us reconsider the beauty standards and be more open minded. It is possible that in a couple of years or a decade we will see more charismatic models overtaking the runways, models who will have the voice and will not be afraid to stand behind their principles. These models will be the next supermodels. FMM: Do you think a fashion model needs to be more than just tall and attractive? VP: Oh yes, for sure. As I explained before a pretty model with no core is ‘no bueno’. These things are quite important for me: 1. Know your body well, fluid posing is essential 2. Great attitude and energy – no one likes a beautiful “dead fish” 3. Be responsive – learn how to listen and take directions 4. Open your personality – surprise us, photographers love spontaneity, that’s how we usually we get the best shots 5. Don’t be vegetarians, so we can order pizza (I’m joking about this one FMM: What do you wish people knew about Viktorija Pashuta? VP: I wish people knew less about me, so I can pretend I’m a secret agent or something. FMM: Your favorite way to unwind? VP: Sports, music and drag racing in LA traffic.

JASON BASSETT ason Bassett is a professional photographer living in Miami, Florida. All he wants his photography to do is make you feel good. Underlying themes of love and nostalgia are heavily present in his editorial work. He mainly photographs fashion and nudes. There is usually either quiet candor to the mood, or something intense. Or maybe odd. All of the work harmonizes the concepts of purpose and randomness. Jason has traveled around the US exhibiting his photographic stories (places like Miami, LA , Orlando, Atlanta). Being featured on various sites and his widely viewed behind the scenes videos

has given him a platform to inspire, teach, and give some personal sense of beauty to the world. It’s quite a charming life. As a child he was fascinated by video games and the female heroes, which can be seen in some of his series. His works can be seen in a myriad of fashion magazines and other photography publications. He is the RAW artist Miami photographer of the year. Jason is emotionally and vibrantly passionate about each career move due to his nature of wanting those that connect to always be able to connect deeply.

Q&A:

By: Kelly Price

FMM: You were born in Beirut and now live in Canada, traveled all over the world from Asia to America, from Africa to Europe. How has your multicultural heritage helped you with your projects around the globe? RS: My heritage has enriched my taste, sense, self being, planning a photo-shoot I add a new dimension a new touch in the concept and execution that can go far beyond the images. FMM: Do you believe through fashion people can speak a common language all across the world? RS: Oh yeah, fashion is a medium of expression similar to photography, a language that goes far beyond the alphabet. FMM: You ever do your own styling for the shoots? If so, which ones? RS: I’ve done soooo many, especially when I started, since I needed to build my portfolio and I was everything, creative and art director, stylist, assistant, photographer, makeup artist, everything except the model of course. FMM: Do you have a preference for a location e.g. indoors, outdoors, city, coastal? RS: I love outdoors, since I went outside the studio the first time, I rarely come back in, I have a ‘love hate’ relationship with the studio, because I love the outdoors, it can express more, the scenery, background, elements all play a big role in my photography and location selection. FMM: What kind of gear do you use? RS: I use Canon 5D MIII and prime lens (35mm, 50mm, 85mm Sigma) Hasselblad 500c Film 85 mm, for my own satisfaction

40 ||

FAS HI O N

M A G A Z I N E || FEBRUARY 2015

FMM: Which is your favorite lens? Why? RS: The new 85 mm portrait art lens from Sigma, it’s the best price, quality and outcome, especially in low light and ambient light. FMM: Where do you look for inspirations? RS: Inspiration, I have written a whole article about inspiration in my blog: www.RSphotography.co/blog-2/ I personally get inspired from the streets and especially the ones of Paris; I simply fall in love, the amount of art, architecture, beauty, colors and history. Paris is a sure thing to get me in the mood in 2 seconds.

FMM: What were the biggest challenges you had to deal with on this shoot? RS: There are many big challenges in the desert: the equipment you have is the equipment you have, if you forget something, you can’t turn back. Then the sun, it is a killer, the heat; its harshness creates sweat and exhaustion. The sand gets everywhere and will be with you long after the shoot is finished. In the desert there is also extensive preparations, special cars, equipment, water, etc. FMM: How do you manage and deal with weather conditions? RS: I obtained a new skill as a weatherman; many times it worked to my benefit. With today’s technology, the data is available publicly; you simply have to know how to read it. The trick is to learn to read weather satellite maps.

FMM: What is your retouching/production philosophy? RS: I prefer simple, retouching edges, cleaning, and redefining highlights and tones. FMM: Any coming projects you’re excited about? RS: I will be doing my first solo exhibition. FMM: Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years? RS: 10 years is a long journey, that will take me in to new unexplored self-achievements, and new discoveries FMM: What’s the most important thing you want potential clients to know about you? RS: I will be able to provide a new dimension for their brand and collection.

TEHMINA SUNNY Making waves in Hollywood By: Elizabeth Price

IT WAS NEVER THE PLAN FOR TEHMINA TO PURSUE A CAREER IN ACTING; IT WAS A PATH THAT OCCURRED PRIMARILY BY CHANCE. AS A CHILD, SUNNY RECEIVED A SCHOLARSHIP FOR HER TALENT IN PLAYING THE VIOLIN, VIOLA, AND PIANO, WHICH DEVELOPED HER LOVE FOR THE ARTS. THEN WITH NO PREVIOUS TRAINING, AND BATTLING AGAINST THOUSANDS OF OTHERS SHE BECAME A FINALIST FOR BBC’S CROSSCOUNTRY SEARCH FOR ACTING TALENT. TEHMINA BEGAN ACTING IN SCHOOL PRODUCTIONS FROM THAT POINT ON, WORKING TO DEVELOP HER PASSION. Coming from an Indian family it was expected that Tehmina pursue a life based in academia, which would provide her with a more stable future. Tehmina went to school in England, at the University of Leeds, where she graduated with honors in business studies and marketing. Her focus was Business Information Systems with an emphasis on Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science. When asked why she chose Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Sunny says, “I am happy to admit that I am rather a geek and I think I always will be.” She had a passion for computers that developed at a young age, fascinated by the rapid evolving changes that led us to computers today. Artificial Intelligence was a subject that boggled her mind, and Tehmina felt very intrigued to study and learn more about it. Although Sunny spent most of her time focused on her studies, the University >>>>>

provided her with opportunities to participate in the arts so she did not have to abandon her passion altogether. Following suit, Tehmina found a job after graduating that would provide her with that ‘stable’ life her parents wanted for her. It was not until European agent, Joe Hutton, reached out to convince Tehmina to go into acting that she gave the idea a real chance. After completing some research Tehmina chose to leave London and move to LA, in order to learn from a particular acting teacher, Margie Haber. It was with Haber’s direction that Sunny was able to transform the one time chance of nailing an audition, from a happenstance occurrence to a concentrated and purposeful effort. In one of Tehmina’s first roles, she played Vina, in the movie The Ground beneath Her Feet directed by Mike Figgis. In this adaption, her character is a scarred woman whose life is chronicled through a span of 40 years. Her path is depicted as she weaves through love and pain among the male characters in the movie. The novel, The Ground beneath Her Feet was originally written by Salman Rushdie. Tehmina regrets that she was never able to meet the author, as she was unable to attend the opening night of the production. Tehmina adds that it was “a fabulous novel and working with Mike Figgis was a dream come true.”

In 2012, Sunny appeared in the Oscar award winning film Argo, directed by Ben Affleck. She was also hand-picked to play a role in the Oscar nominated project Children of Men, giving her the opportunity to work alongside stars Clive Owen and Julianne Moore. In the film, directed by Alfonso Cuaron, Tehmina plays a futuristic underground gang member. On television, Sunny has been cast in Emmy award winning productions including NCIS, Californication, Heroes, Undercovers, Aaron Sorkins’ The Newsroom, ABC’s Mistresses, and The Following with Kevin Bacon. From The Ground beneath Her Feet to Mistresses, Tehmina has evolved as an actor, playing roles in such diverse projects. She tends to lean towards Dramas and Thrillers, so to date much of her projects have gravitated toward this. However, Sunny also finds herself venturing into the world of comedy, as her dry quirky sense of humor is opening doors. Tehmina acknowledges that she has never been typecast as a Bollywood persona or character, but almost wishes she would be. “For some reason I’m not easily recognized in America to fit in to what they feel is a stereotype of an Indian female.” Tehmina explains that American casting tends to lean toward darker skin for Indian characters, and because of her lighter skin she >>>>>

is not cast in this genre of filming. Unfortunately, because of this oddity she has not had the opportunity to work on a Bollywood project, but would welcome the chance to participate in one. Sunny confesses that she was a bit of a tomboy growing up, and even loved to play football. “When other kids chose to participate in dance class or Brownies, I chose to learn martial arts.” She became proficient in karate and won medals for fighting in Taekwondo and Sankuki karate. Today her favorite type to practice is kickboxing. She has maintained a commitment to exercise to this day. Tehmina explains, “I enjoy working out and its definitely part of my daily routine,” even going as far as to call herself “a gym rat”. She works to vary her routines based on the muscle group she is focusing on. Sunny does anything from lifting weights, to cables, to TRX, and incorporates cardio too. Tehmina’s passions extend far from inside the gym. Tehmina says, “I’m a foodie, one of my loves is trying out different dishes and making them, trying to perfect flavors. But I do spend the majority of my time focusing on acting, which feels like a full time hobby, which I enjoy very much.” Additionally, Sunny conveys to Most her interest in fashion, “To me, clothes are pieces of art. Vintage pieces, new pieces, I just adore them all.” She admits that she will even buy a pair of shoes or an item of clothing with no intention of wearing it. Tehmina has an eye

for beautifully designed and crafted pieces, and enjoys adding pieces to her personal collection. Furthermore, Tehmina has dedicated herself to help The Rape Foundation provide comprehensive care to rape and sexually abused victims. Tehmina joined the project when one of her close friends asked if she would like to get involved. “It is a cause that has helped so many and just hearing stories from victims is heart breaking, but hearing their survival process is so powerful.” In the future Sunny hopes to delve into directing. She is presently focused on producing and acting, but is open to anything that lands in her lap. In the meantime, fans can look for Tehmina in the new TV show CSI: Cyber, airing in February. She will also be in the TV show Battle Creek with Josh Duhamel and Kal Penn, also on CBS. Tehmina also tells Most “I’m excited for the release of a video game I have been working on for the last two years, but I have to keep the name under wraps until its release.” If Tehmina’s new ventures are anything like her pervious appearances, we have a lot to look forward to!

Director

HU WEI’S ‘Butter Lamp’ wins 70 prestigious film awards By: Kelly Price

W

e are excited to have the opportunity to talk with Hu Wei, award winning director and screenwriter. Hu Wei is an only child, born in the ’80’s under China’s ‘One Child Policy’. He studied in Paris with his parents’ support and encouragement He is the only in his family that is in the arts industry. So it would be fair to say he is wholly responsible for his great talents. He attended Ecole Nationale Superieurd des Beaus-Arts where he studied plastic art. He also studied at Le Fresnoy which is a national art studio, similar to a higher art research institution. Wei said at Le Fresnoy there is more of an emphasis on artistry, conceptuality and originality of artists’ work. Wei feels that all forms of art have their own language. He continues to draw as it is a part of his life. He does not have a preference to any on of his artistic talents, and said “the important thing is expression.” Film is multi dimensional which paintings or sculptures can not represent. And conversely film or imagery can not represent the texture of oil paintings nor the feel of sculpted materials.

62 ||

FAS HI O N

M A G A Z I N E || FEBRUARY 2015

Wei’s short film, Butter Lamp, is only his 3rd film yet has proven to be hugely successful, receiving 70 awards. Butter Lamp is fiction, yet has only one professional actor. The film is about a photographer who discovers Tibetan nomads and photographs them in font of various scenic backdrops. All of the Tibetan nomads in the film are indigenous people, none of them had any acting experience. Wei said it was very difficult to find Tibetan people to participate. He said they take precautions when dealing with the Han Chinese as a result of long standing trust issues. Another reason they had trouble finding people to participate was they filmed in the summer, which is the time most Tibetans are searching for the expensive caterpillar fungus used in traditional Chinese medicine. Also the filming was done without any official permission, which created difficulties and obstacles. Filming “outside the system” Wei stated was challenging “especially in a place as sensitive as Tibet.” >>>>>

64 ||

There were also logistical challenges with the making of Butter Lamp. There were psychological and physical difficulties the whole film crew faced in the Tibetan high altitudes. Wei also said there were challenges with communication and effective implementation working with over a hundred unprofessional (sic) actors and actresses.

T

he film captures the Tibetan nomads traditions and beliefs. In some scenes the nomads wear a mix of western clothing and very traditional Tibetan items such as the nambu, an 8” wide sash often made of yak wool. Tibetans rely heavily on yak for clothing, nourishment, fuel, shelter, most all things vital to their daily survival. The yak can symbolize strength, safety, wealth or luck. This symbolization or offerings can be displayed in butter lamps with the burning of yak butter. In Wei’s multi-award winning film, what is he offering the viewer? When asked if he felt there was anything about the movie that critics were not recognizing he replied, “yes, there are messages I hid in Butter Lamp that are not very easy to interpret.” Wei would not divulge which scenes nor the messages. A few teasers, there is a message with the village chief and the message is related to changes happening in Tibet right now. >>>>>

Wei said there were tons of things he was surprised the Tibetans did during filming. He explained how the original production was delayed 2 years because when they first arrived the Tibetans thought the film crew was there to get them to participate in political propaganda. They believed this as they had seen pictures of Tiananmen Square, the furry of some radical Tibetans escalated and they smashed a camera and hurt a photographer.

T

here were also inspirational things the nomads were willing to do, for example the scene where the elderly woman holds the framed picture of the 11th Panchen Lama who many Tibetans believe was abducted by the Chinese government. Before this scene was filmed each actor was asked to give his consent since participating could bring them trouble. Their dedication to their beliefs demonstrated by their participation in this scene was Wei’s motivation to originally make Butter Lamp. While Wei is proud of all of the awards Butter Lamp has received, the Chinese Independent Film Festival (CIFF) award has special importance as it is the first independent film festival in China and the first screening of Butter Lamp by any Chinese film festival. The CIFF had its own struggles and at one point it was even banned. But the ClermontFerrand Short Film Festival is a very influential festival and the Grand Jury Award from the AFI Film Festival is very important as it is the most influential international festival in North America. Wei shared that he will continue making short and feature films. Within all genres of film

Wei prefers cinema d’auteur. He will be a part of a group exhibit this month in Rome. He’ll be showing a work about Eastern Cameroon. As Butter Lamp has taught us something of the nomadic Tibetans with Wei beautifully capturing their innocence and strengths, we look forward to seeing Eastern Cameroon through Wei’s award winning perspective.

hotographer Angel Colon describes his work as portraying “an unspoken emotion,” and having a “sudden spark of spontaneity.” With a focus on beauty, fashion, and portraiture his work has been featured in several international publications and media. Telling a story through images comes naturally to Angel, and he has worked with many different mediums for his visual story-telling, but photography has always remained his one real passion. He believes that fashion or beauty photography is so much more than simply taking a photograph; he is always striving for those key moments of realness, energy, movement, and true emotions in his images. In his eyes, photography is a constant learning experience and a never-ending transformation. “It’s art…. It’s life.”

ulti-talented seems to be the obvious description for Emrhys Cooper. Cooper’s talents deserve to be described grandly, to do so adequately would probably sound like it was written by his bragging mum. Cooper acts, dances and more. His mum is a profound inspiration to the success of all his work, he describes her as incredible. As he speaks of both of his parents, one can tell he has been greatly influenced by both. He says his parents were caring and supportive, which was critical, allowing Cooper to follow his artistic dreams. They taught him to go after anything in life and that he was capable of anything. These ideas were taught to him when he was very young. His parents told him, “There is no dream too big to go

after.” Cooper says his mother is a talented artist also and he believes that in 2015 she will make her mark. Cooper had plenty of time to dream growing up. He was raised in a very small village in Devon in South West England. Cooper says that there was not much to do growing up there and that his parents were not wealthy, but he said, “They showered me with love.” This was always evident when his parents supported his dreams, always providing opportunities to attend dance classes and various competitions. Cooper studied at Laine Theatre Arts College. He has continued to study acting beyond college. Cooper continually pushes himself to learn new >>>>>

things and to challenge himself. A combination of his natural talents and education create an impressive list of artistic gifts. He dances tap, contemporary, ballet, jazz and hip hop. Even with all of his skills and experience, when he has free time he tries to continue to take voice and dance lessons. When asked if he has any ideas to create a project with a dance form not seen regularly, he replied, “I love to think outside of the box and challenge myself to create something original and unique. My goal is to move and inspire people through dance.” tepping beyond dancing, he also choreographs, sings and writes music. Cooper co-wrote the song Hypnotized and starred in the music video with Rachele Brook Smith. Lest he be pigeon-holed, Cooper also is an award winning book narrator. Through a friend he had the opportunity to audition at Random House Audio. He was selected to narrate the children’s book Neversink, written by Barry Wolverton. This narration won him the Earphones Award from AudioFile Magazine. Accepting the narration job was more than just the simplicity of reading a children’s book. Cooper shared he is dyslexic, which makes reading a struggle and reading aloud a true challenge. Clearly this was a challenge he mastered. He has gone on to narrate several more books and he is proud to say that it gets easier each time. Proof that he has mastered narration is evident in his selection to narrate the book Silent House. Silent House was written by Orhan Pamuk, who in 2006, received the Noble Prize in Literature. When asked which among his talents is his favorite, it was hard for him to select one, as he feels so passionate for all of them. Cooper said,

“What you could say is that I have a passion to create.” Currently he is focusing on acting and feels lucky to be in a career that he is passionate about. The number of movies Cooper has acted in is approaching a dozen. In most of these he has been the lead but I am sure in Mamma Mia he had no problem deferring to Meryl Streep. He has also appeared in at least a dozen TV shows both in Britain and America. He has successfully made it “across the pond.” MOST asked how Parting Shot was made. The 48 Hour Film Festival program, Make Your Mark, is a competition to make a short film in forty eight hours. Parting Shot was such a film. Cooper was asked by his dear friend and actress Tehmina Sunny, if he wanted to help. The next day they were filming Parting Shot. He said he had wanted to work with Sunny since he first met here so he was happy to collaborate on the Make Your Mark project. They had forty eight hours to write, act, edit and complete the filming. They not only completed their film within the time allowance, but they made it into the top ten films screened in Los Angeles. nother of Cooper’s projects was the lead in the movie Kushuthara: Pattern of Love. This movie was filmed in the kingdom of Bhutan. This Asian country holds tightly to its traditional Buddhist lifestyle. Cooper was the first Western actor to star in a Bhutanese feature film and was honored by the opportunity. He described the experience of making the movie as, “life changing.” He was able to see a very different lifestyle, nothing that compares to the hyper activity of the entertainment world. Cooper said, “Their view on happiness and life has touched my heart and I will never forget that experience.” When asked how the Bhutanese lifestyle surprised >>>>>

him, he explained, “Westerners are constantly striving for more and materialistic things are more important that we like to let on. They, on the other hand, are content with the life they’ve been given, thus they’re more happy because they have peace knowing what they’re doing is enough.” Kushuthara: Pattern of Love was released in December 2014 in the USA. In regard to the release of his movies and general PR for any of his projects, MOST asked Cooper if/how he uses social media to promote his work. He said he is still getting a grip on the various medias, as they require quite a bit of attention and seem to be overlapping. Since he tries to be professional and honest and does not want to push his views or projects on anyone, he wants to be careful working with social medias. He also stated, “I also try to keep it positive, there is enough negativity in the world, I don’t need to add to it.” He does like the ability to interact with fans via social media. He recently appeared on the TV

show Person of Interest and live tweeted with fans throughout the show; he said it is fun to hear the fans’ thoughts. e talked about Cooper’s struggles and disappointments. He shared he has had more than can be imagined. “Being an actor it is hard not to take rejection personally” he revealed. But he has a strong support system and a great team of agents who constantly push him forward. When asked about his legacy, Cooper said he hope to be a part of some films and TV works that will be remembered. And he believes if he follows his passion he will have success. Today he is feeling blessed to have had a wonderful Christmas with his family in London and is excited to see the opportunities in 2015. Currently he says he has no idea what is next and he has decided to embrace the unknown.

MALTESE MARC By Darcy Tharp

“I TRY THROUGH MY PHOTOS TO SHOW MY PERCEPTION OF BEAUTY AND EXPLAIN MY UNIVERSE. PHOTOGRAPHY IS MY TRUE PASSION.” Fashion

photographer Maltese Marc has always been attracted by the artistic world and studied at a photography school in France but considers himself to also be self-taught, and admittedly a bit sensitive. He is specifically drawn to the technical side of photography, the aesthetics, the attention to detail, and playing with light. The light changes day by day he explains and as such, “it brings a different perspective on the world and my pictures. It is a reflection of everyday life and how it changes.” He attempts to always give his undivided attention to the image and to the model and believes that communication between people is the most important. To show the best of someone and always achieve a better image he strives to project himself in that moment, to have a feeling and a connection, and to stop, see, and capture it. Maltese Marc creates his beautiful, captivating images with either a Leica S2 or his Nikon, and today he can be found working at his studio in Marseille, France where he also resides. “I trust in my instincts along with my imagination and improvisation.”

NICK WECHSLER

FAN FAVORITE JACK PORTER ON ABC’S NOMINATED SERIES REVENGE

By: Darcy Tharp

“He’s taller, and more of a man – he can fix stuff and mix a drink. I can break stuff and drink a drink.” he “shorter” but just as handsome, actor Nick Wechsler tells Fashion Most how he and his character, bar-owner and fan favorite Jack Porter on ABC’s nominated series Revenge, differ. Jack is the sexy, funny, and un-pretentious character in the Hamptons (where the show takes place) that we are all always rooting for. And in real life, Nick is just as down to earth as Jack with no interest in “summering” in the Hamptons, “I’m not opposed to it, but I don’t have cause to go to the Hamptons. It’s probably a beautiful place, but the imbalance of wealth alienates me, and it makes me uncomfortable.” This could be due in part to the fact that Nick grew up with seven brothers born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico and probably the reason he developed his unique brand of twisted humor, which reveals itself when he says the only food he cooks is “pop-tarts,” and his favorite food in general, the “white man’s Indian food: Chicken Tikka Masala.” >>>>>

The charming leading man may not have a passion for cooking, or sports for that matter, disclosing that “Honestly, I’ve never understood sports fanaticism because to me it’s arbitrary – like where you happen to be born dictates what team you root for. I think you should root for whoever you want.” But he divulges that, “I do play sports. I play dodgeball-more than any adult should.” In fact though, it is music he loves, and as a zealous concert goer, he finds singer and song-writer Mike Patton, best known for being the lead singer of the alternative metal band, Faith No More, to be his longest standing idol. “He’s hands-down the greatest vocalist in rock music right now and ever as far as I’m concerned. He’s also had a tremendous influence on my musical and artistic tastes.” s an artist from a young age, Nick headed for Hollywood immediately following high school graduation, to pursue his dream of acting. Shortly after arriving in L.A., his dream was fulfilled when he was cast as Kevin “Trek” Sanders, a child prodigy conceived at a Star Trek convention, in the syndicated series Team Knight Rider. With his career gaining momentum, he then landed his breakout Teen Choice Nominated role as Kyle Valenti in the WB series Roswell. After the show wrapped, Nick went on to land recurring roles in such series as: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Without a Trace, and Vanished, as well as guest starring roles in Crossing Jordan, Cold Case, Chase, Malcolm in the Middle, and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. His work on the big screen includes roles in the feature film Fling, and independent films Chick’s Man and Lie To Me.

owever, it is still Nick’s current show Revenge which is responsible for giving him what he considers to be his most memorable moment in his career so far-the moment when Jack’s dog Sammy died. “I’ve gotten more compliments on that moment than I got in anything in my career. Emily, his co-star on Revenge, and I talk about it, we both talk about it in the press because we both felt it. It’s where we most lost ourselves and felt true. She herself said that she’s never felt that since. It was just this beautiful thing – where we lost awareness of the set and the camera. It’s the most real that I’ve ever felt, and I’ve been chasing that feeling ever since.” Nick makes every scene feel that real, yet as easy as he makes it look on camera, he dishes that upon arriving at the set each day, he gets there “in a blind panic to cram my lines into my brain hole. Despite having studied for many hours before each scene, I still get there and blank the moment they say, ‘Action.’ I have jitters that I have to get rid of by cramming lines.” Whatever his process is, it obviously seems to work for him and his sense of humor is never far away as he always attempts to make the main character, Emily, laugh when the director yells “cut.” His own character has not had an easy life, and Nick has done superbly at portraying Jack’s numerous ups and downs and emotional scenes, as he has had to live through loved ones dying all around him at the hands of the powerful, amoral characters whom he and his friends work hard to take down. >>>>>

Nick says that he and Jack are both “fiercely loyal, and we’re often too moral for our own good. We both also have a really hard time letting go of injustices.” This is apparent in that Nick is an avid supporter of the AIDS Walk Los Angeles and New York which he first participated in with a friend. “While there, I heard people’s personal stories about having struggled with the disease at a time when there was a huge stigma to have it. You hear the numbers, and it’s a far-off thing, but then you talk to people who have heartbreaking stories. That’s what made me want to come back and support the cause year after year.” Nick advises that, “We should listen to people, contribute what we can, and just be a part of the awareness.” Listening and trying to help people is why Nick revealed that there was a time when he was really interested in being a therapist.

ight now though if he was not acting or residing in L.A. he perhaps would be interested in writing or living in England. His fondness of England came from dating “this really lovely girl, who used to live in Bristol. I traveled there a lot to see her.” England to him, “just felt more handmade than where I grew up and most parts of America that I’ve been to, and I loved that. I could really feel its history-I could feel the smallness of so many of the buildings and the narrowness of the streets. It wasn’t like a grid, and I just thought it was beautiful.” England is indeed a gorgeous place, but hopefully neither Nick nor his counterpart Jack will be leaving us anytime soon, and we can continue to enjoy and cheer for him on-screen for quite some time.

A point of view of the world we live in by:

JERI LAMPERT

PHOTOGRAPHY “Steppenwolfe Series”

rowing out of my deep connection and interest in the novel “Steppenwolf” by Herman Hesse, this new artistic project of mine, the “Steppenwolfe Series,” is an ongoing visual expression of my own feelings of displacement and alienation from the society which I live in. Much like the title character of Hesse’s work, I feel a willful need to distance myself from my environment, despite a contradictory desire to be part of that same environment. My “Steppenwolfe Series” is a visual attempt to capture the same feelings of loneliness and isolation. My subjects are often anonymous, wandering people, dark and mysterious, walking through the back alleys of society. The scenes are often in decaying environments, which represent the sagging of society around us all. You the observer are a voyeur looking in at characters in a scene that are unaware of you, looking off at some unknown and unattainable goal, locked in an insubstantial inner world. “”Ah, but it is hard to find this track of the divine in the midst of this life we lead, in this besotted humdrum age of spiritual blindness, with its architecture, its business, its politics, its men! How could I fail to be a lone wolf…and in fact, if the world is right, if this music of the cafes, these mass enjoyments of these Americanized men who are pleased with so little are right, then I am wrong, I am crazy. I am the Steppenwolf who I often call myself; the beast astray who find neither home nor joy nor nourishment in a world that is strange and incomprehensible to him.” ~Herman Hesse

TATIANA SHABELNIK FMM: What made you decide to pursue a career in fashion? T.S: Becoming a fashion designer was not a random decision. It has been my big dream since I was a little girl. I grew up under communism and life wasn’t easy economically or politically. Good quality clothing, shoes, accessories etc. were not easy to buy. When I was 8 years old, I really wanted a pair of German leather shoes that cost 1/3 of my mom’s salary, and my amazing mom bought them for me anyways. (Her salary as a physicist at the Academy of Sciences of Belarus was 120 rubles and the shoes cost 32 rubles.) My mother raised me by herself. To make extra money, she completed a two-year course in sewing and learned not only how to sew to perfection but also how to build patterns from scratch. I remember her coming home every day at seven p.m. from her day job and sitting behind the sewing machine till midnight. I grew up surrounded by copies of Burda and other fashion magazines. At a very young age, I could distinguish the feel of different fabrics. When I was 7, my grandmother taught me to knit. I learned how to sew at school, but my mother was my most influential teacher.

When I was sixteen, I was to attend Fashion Designer Program in another city. I couldn’t leave my mother and grandmother, so life prepared a different route for me. I enrolled in the library science program at the Belarusian University of Culture and, upon completion of my Master’s Degree, taught library and information science for five years before going to Louisiana State University [LSU] to pursue my Master’s Degree. My childhood dream of becoming a fashion designer never died, though. At the age of 44, I decided that it was better late than never and started a new course in my life. FMM: What are your qualifications as a fashion designer and how do you think your education has prepared you to work in the industry? T.S: I haven’t completed a fashion designer degree; instead I consider myself a natural-born artist. In 2012, I began to study fashion formally in the Otis College Continuing Education Program. I do not know how many years it will take me to complete a degree in this way. I joke with my mom about it and tell her that maybe, by the age of 90, I will have a degree ... if I really need it! While taking classes in the Otis program, I created a line of >>>>>

gorgeous shawls and scarves that I sew myself. From shawls and scarves I moved on to the planning and launching of “Contrast,” a sophisticated, avant-garde line of clothing for women. When I visited my mother in Minsk in the summer of 2013, I brought all the leather and fabric with me, hired sample-makers, and, in a couple of weeks I was ready to show my collection at my first in life fashion show – “Mamont” Festival of Modem Arts and Avant-garde Fashion show in Minsk. A few months later in the fall of 2013, I competed at RAWards, and was chosen as one of three finalists for the Designer of the Year in Los Angeles. FMM: What do you think are the biggest challenges for the emerging fashion designer? T.S: In most cases, emerging fashion designers are people who hold day jobs while working on pursuing their dreams of fashion. This is my case. I balance my full-time job and my civic responsibilities as an active member of the Rotary Club of Pico Rivera with my entrepreneurial goals as a fashion designer. Balance is the biggest challenge, and certainly the same is true about money and funding. One needs a lot of money to start a fashion business, especially regarding fashion PR. FMM: What skills are most important for a successful career in fashion design? T.S: First and foremost, NEVER GIVE UP YOUR DREAMS! I also have a long list of other skills and requirements that I think a successful fashion designer should possess: artistic talent, ambition, self-motivation, charm, phenomenal people and communication skills, commitment, competitiveness, confidence, efficiency, flexibility, initiative, independence, strong leadership and business skills, high and positive energy, humor, imagination, organizational and strong writing skills, excellent computer skills, huge passion for

fashion, patience, resourcefulness, daring and networking abilities. FMM: How do you handle stress?
 T.S: We all face stress on a daily basis. It is all about how you respond to it. I can handle any type of stress and stay calm. A number of people asked me, as I worked on my show backstage at L.A. Fashion Week, how I could stay so calm. My answer was: “What is the worst thing that could happen?” If you enjoy fully what you are doing, you should not feel stress; you should enjoy the process. Even when mistakes happen, you will learn from these mistakes and next time you will do much better. FMM: How would you describe your personal style?
 T.S: My collection was inspired by my tremendous passion for travel and learning about other cultures. Bold bright colors and shapes as well as color-blocking elements derive from my longtime admiration for the work of Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky and Belorussian-French artist Marc Chagall. My collection incorporates fusion colors along with the current trends. My ambition with this line is to produce clothing that people will want to wear in everyday life. Very comfortable, yet stylish—these qualities have always been the goal of my designs. Every woman has to look sexy and feminine, too. I believe that adding a little touch of “drama” is essential even though I want my clothing to be wearable and not simply designed for the runway. My clothing certainly should WOW a runway audience but at the same time I want that runway audience to know that this clothing is made for them. My designs draw on a host of influences and inspirations, including the colors and styles of Belorussian folk dresses. By reflecting my >>>>>

heritage in these designs, I have produced clothing that connects contemporary life with my homeland and my past. FMM: Where would you like your career in fashion to lead you? T.S: My big dream is to be a full-time fashion designer with customers all over the world. It will take a lot of work but I know there is nothing that is impossible. FMM: What do you think are the current and future trends in fashion? T.S: I have read about many trends, but I believe that designers are the ones who should create them. I designed my own collection before I read anything about any trends, and then I found that the majority of what I’ve done is described by these trends. I call it intuition.
According to Glamour, in the spring of 2015 the color yellow is supposed to be popular: from amber and canary to saffron and marigold. Black-and-white also will be a trend with variations of textures, patterns, and silhouettes. Blue-and-white combinations, as well as kimonostyle trench coats, that some fashion magazines say have been “spotted all over the runways.” According to Vogue, suede is going to be very much in style, bingham “covering everything from baja mini dresses to mink fur coats.” I have it for my new collection. FMM: Do you have a preferred material to use for your design? T.S: My collection CONTRAST is done from leather, silk and chiffon. My preference is working with natural fibers. My new collection will use natural fibers and leather as well. FMM: Tell us about your design process? T.S: I start by selecting fabrics. Just by looking at a certain pattern, I decide what design I will

do. I can find a beautiful trim and it can inspire the whole outfit or a beautiful piece of leather that immediately tells me what I am going to do with it. I sketch everything myself. Once the sketch is done, I contact a digital flats-maker and illustrator. Once flat design is done on the computer, I connect with my sample-makers over Skype because they are in my home country of Belarus. Then, I send them all the sketches, flats and illustrations and explain everything in detail. FMM: Do you have an inspirational process or each season is different? T.S: It is hard for me to talk about many seasons because I have done only one collection so far and have been in fashion for less than two years. I am currently working on an Autumn/Winter collection and it is already in the hands of my samplemakers. If I get sponsors, I will be able to show my new collection either in New York or Los Angeles as I have invitations from producers in both cities. FMM: How do you promote your brand? T.S: Since May 2013 I have done six runway shows. Along with the shows in Minsk and RAWards, in March of 2014 I showed my collection at LA Fashion Week with Style Fashion Week at LA LIVE and in September at the Orange County Fashion week. I have also done several photo shoots. One was done for the look book on my website. Two more were done with an awardwinning photographer, Viktorija Pashuta. My collection has also been featured in a number of editorials with Viktorija’s photos: MOST Fashion Magazine, Elements Magazine and Avant Garde Magazine. I was also featured in the newsletter and magazine of Claremont McKenna College, where I work full-time as a web manager. The Los Angeles Times published two feature articles on me. I was featured in Whittier Daily News, LA Fashion Magazine, Fusion Magazine,

and a number of fashion blogs. I was interviewed three times by radio stations, including Premier Russian Radio, which is for all Russian-speaking populations in the United States and Canada. I am also part of the cast of the documentary “Emerging” that is coming out in 2015. I also promote my line with the website that I designed and maintain myself: www. tatianashabelnik.com
 Social media plays an important role in promoting my brand. I have two Facebook pages: one for my clothing line, and another for T & R Accessories, a jewelry company that I founded together with my friend, Rebecca Zimberlin, in 2014. Video coverage of my collection at L.A. Fashion Week (March 2014) and Orange County Fashion Week (September 2014) is available on Vimeo channel:

Since June 2013 I produced six fashion shows. I have done most of the work myself starting with hiring stylists, choreographers, casting models, selecting all the music, editing the music, arranging a crew to work back stage, bringing photographers and videographers, inviting all the guests/buyers. I basically handled every single detail. My fashion shows are not a straight runway but a merge of dance, choreography and fashion. That takes much more time to prepare than a regular runway show. FMM: What should we expect from your design in 2015?
 T.S: What to expect? How about a surprise? There will be more of CONTRAST in leather garments, and quite a few avant-garde and flowing long dresses. I have always believed that fashion and style can change the way people feel about themselves and how they perceive others.

FMM: How do you prepare yourself for the fashion shoot or show and what’s the average number you do for each per year? T.S: As I already mentioned, I had three photo shoots for my current collection “CONTRAST”. For the first photo shoot I casted the models together with my stylist, and hired a make-up artist. For the second two editorial photo shoots Viktorija Pashuta handled everything. I sent her images of the collection that I already had and she helped to identify which ones we were going to photograph, what could be submitted to fashion magazines and she arranged all the models and make up. I also had my teacher, Angelica Itomura from Downey Make-up Academy (I took a ten-week bridal makeup class with her) bring her team to help with hair and make-up.
