Let me introduce myself:

My name is Biani Xavier I am a bikini competitor, certified personal trainer, entrepreneur, wife and a mother of two. Yes, I am a busy gal!! In this first issue of Most Fitness Magazine, I hope we will learn from one another what a magazine is, and what it can be, in our always changing world of media and technology. To start, let me say how much I love magazines. From my earliest years I have always enjoyed flipping through the pages of magazines, amazed by their images and stories. Whether a magazine is delivered to your doorstep or to your computer, printed on glossy stock or on cheap tabloid paper, appearing on your iPad or your cell-phone screen, it is still and foremost the work of an editorial team for a discerning audience, a beautiful and meaningful, package of ideas, words and images that a group of experts prepares for its readers. While technology efficiently delivers news stories to our desktops, laptops and mobile devices, magazines are all about context. How ideas and images are presented in relation to one another and within a larger point of view. Magazines are about trust and partnership: We, the editors, will strive always to keep you engaged and you, the readers, are free to engage with us. But enough theory let me tell you about this new exciting addition to the Most Magazine brand. We are honored to have Natalia Melo, Ms. Bikini Olympia 2012 as our cover model. hotographer Justin Grant discovered his affinity for portrait photography in the fall of 2002 when he borrowed his brother’s camera to photograph his two children. The results turned out surprisingly well, and Justin decided his life was in need of a big change, so he gave up his software company and become a full-time portrait photographer. Now, ten years later he is a proud, self-taught advertising photographer traveling the world on assignments. Today his client list is vast including companies and people such as: Sony Playstation, MGM Corp, Majesco, Matrix Fitness, Icon Fitness, City Creek - Taubman Group - SMZ, Maggie Sottero, The Light Group, Xyience, Christian Audigier, Rock’n’Roll Marathon, Miss USA Universe, Descente Ski Wear, Del Sol, Cariloha, KT Tape, and JayBird Sports. FMM: When did you book your first major fitness client? Describe the project for us. JG: My first fitness client happened to be Sony PlayStation. I was only one or two years into shooting and stumbled into a meeting with an art director. We talked about my inexperience, and I assured him that I would get things done. I flew out to San Francisco a few days later to shoot the cover of a fitness video game, “Kinetic.” FMM: You started with film camera-what’s your opinion of film versus digital? JG: I believe in the art form of film. It’s beautiful. It’s challenging and something I completely respect and admire. Yet, it’s also not for me at this time. I

10 ||

FITNESS

love digital. I love the power of creating images from whatever comes to my imagination. I like to create, and sometimes using ones and zeros works best for me. FMM: What is the influence of digital technology on your photography? JG: I don’t follow the latest greatest technology; it’s not important for me to have the newest camera on the day that it comes out. I feel you can create great images with the basics, and I tend not to buy new equipment until I need it. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m not shooting on a Canon 10D or anything ;) FMM: What type of cameras do you shoot with? JG: I shoot mostly with the Canon 5d Mark III. I have a backup Mark II, and I sometimes require a larger format camera for some jobs and then shoot with the Hasselblad 4D. FMM: What’s your favorite lens for fitness shooting and why? Prime or zoom? JG: I’ve recently switched to Prime lenses and kick myself in the ass for not doing it before. It makes such a big difference in quality. My primary lenses these days are the 1.2 50mm and the 1.2 85mm. FMM: When you go on travels, what lighting equipment do you take on a shoot? Do you prefer natural light? JG: I usually rent Profoto packages on location. Or, I haul my lights in a light travel bag. That is not

>>>

preferred! I also have an Elinchrome battery power pack kit that comes in handy. I like natural light, but it usually requires a kick with a little flash or large scrims, etc.

FMM: How would you describe your style? JG: I like to describe my style as anything dramatic. I hope my images are viewed as powerful. I want people to wonder how the hell it was made.

FMM: You are a self-taught photographer-how difficult was it to learn the skills on your own. What style of photography did you start with (fashion, portrait, fitness, etc)? JG: I feel I’m always growing and learning and have certainly not perfected the trade. However, I feel the beginning stages of learning came quickly for me. I worked my ass off, shot often, and experimented with reverse engineering until I felt I had the knack of a certain style dialed in. I started mostly with fashion and portraits, and I became interested in fitness photography a few years into it.

FMM: Whose work has influenced you the most? JG: Honestly, I don’t follow names. I see work all over the internet and in magazines that inspires me, but I couldn’t tell you who shot it. I feel like following photographers makes me feel envious and less productive, but I’m definitely inspired by the work of so many great artists out there. >>>

FMM: What do you believe makes a perfect fitness model? JG: Besides the obvious-being fit, I need a model to be powerful in the eyes. They need to work hard, yet be comfortable and easy going. FMM: What kind of tools do you use for post processing? Explain your work flow. JG: I use Adobe Bridge to sort through and organize my photos. I then do all of my post-work in Camera Raw and Photoshop CC2014. FMM: You have an amazing way of making your subject stand out in the image. Is it your lighting or the post production or both? JG: It’s absolutely both. I can’t bring out drama in post if the lighting wasn’t just right. I’m very meticulous with my lighting because I know what I can bring out later in post. The two combined together make photos come alive! FMM: Do you prefer color vs BW and why? JG: I really have no preference. I think each photo calls out to be either color or BW. I do love the

14 ||

FITNESS

M A G A Z I N E || APRIL / MAY 2015

power of BW though and feel they tend to be the most dramatic, but just not every photo is meant to be in BW. FMM: You also paint-tell us about your painting and what is your motivation? JG: I always sucked at drawing and painting… BAD. There was just something in me that wanted to figure it out. So I did, and I was absolutely shocked and thrilled to death. It’s been one of the most enlightening and exciting experiences for me. It’s a lot of fun creating something with hands on materials (oil and canvas) as opposed to the digital process. I feel every ten years I do a creative shift and it’s been ten years since I started photography. Painting and video have been my new outlets, outside of photography of course. ELIZABETH POUR Celebrity personal trainer and holistic nutritionist Elizabeth Pour shares her philosophy on fitness, health, and food

A workout should be 4% of your day, the other 96% of your day is filled with opportunity. Opportunities to eat cleaner, be more active, and change the habits that are keeping that 4% of your day from being successful. As a trainer I identify the limiting factors a person has that keeps them from achieving their fitness goals. With a specialized focus in holistic nutrition, food pairing, strength building, interval training, and physical therapy; it’s the unique combination I have developed that helps each client see results. The first step is getting out of your own way. You have to go into it a fitness routine knowing you’re going to start leading a healthier lifestyle, otherwise it’s only natural to adjust your habits to prevent change. Example: You do thirty minutes of cardio at the gym, so at lunch you reward yourself with a cookie because “you deserve it.” Newsflash. That cookie cost you more than your cardio. With diet, I believe food pairing and timing are key factors to getting results. Fad diets revolve around restriction and deprivation. Your body needs a balance to optimally function. If you deprive your body you may see rapid results, but you’re setting yourself up to revert back to where you started; or in most cases, worse off than where you started.

When I began training I had no intention of sticking with it. I graduated high school at 16, playing sports such as soccer and volleyball up until then. At that time I never had to focus on nutrition because I lived such an active lifestyle. When you’re young your relationship with food isn’t as apparent. Food is easier to think about as flavor vs fuel. As the years went by, my interest in food seemed to develop. It became a passion of mine that surpassed sports. After graduating I went to culinary school, to explore the food culture I loved so much. Learning how to prepare decadent meals was such an experience, but my weight took a toll. Without sports I had to look for other ways to stay active. I joined a gym where, like most people, I felt intimidated by big machines I knew nothing about. I started working with a trainer to get on track. With my athlete mentality, I started getting very interested in the most efficient ways to gain mobility and strength through exercise. I felt at that time there was a hole in the program. Why push yourself to do heavy bicep curls or to add weight to your bench press if it doesn’t make you stronger in your daily routine? Although some machines are great and serve a purpose, I felt that there were a lot of limitations. They restricted movement patterns that target functional mobility. I kept adding certifications to my resume as I was finding out how truly passionate I was about fitness. I was recruited to become a trainer at 18 and was a fitness manager by 19. I built up my technique in instructing Olympic lifts; one of the most improperly >>>

trained forms of exercise. I coached Nike boot camps in the area. I focused on core strength and flexibility daily. I wanted to create a way to make a whole-body approach to help clients be successful inside and outside the gym. I started implementing nutritional cooking into my programs and saw that teaching clients not only what to eat, but how to combine foods so they taste great and have the most benefits, dramatically changed their cravings and results. I took clients to the supermarket to help them see what nutrition facts and ingredients they needed to be aware of. This industry is very manipulative. Fat-free. Sugar-free. Both labels that really mean “don’t worry, we added a bunch of other junk instead.” There is always room to expand your knowledge when it comes to nutrition. Being well-informed about your food choices allows you to pick and choose where you want to be flexible. It’s all about balancing your program. I consistently work with clients to help them personalize their program to fit their needs. In 2010 I got in an almost fatal car accident that left me with two bulged discs and severe whiplash. I was determined to make a full recovery. I watched my body respond to corrective exercises and I knew there was still potential to speed up the healing with nutrition. Nutrient timing, which is vital in my clients program, played a big role in this. Food, when paired correctly, can decrease inflammation and help support muscle growth. I have fully recovered and my experience led me to push my body to its limits and place top 3 in numerous bikini bodybuilding competitions. The fun part is that you can really transform your body, within reason, to whatever esthetic or physical shape you want. Flexibility. Strength. Diet. Consistency. There is no cookie cutter answer to training, you just have to look at each individual and see what his or her best path is.

FFM: Do you have any aspirations to continue with your culinary education or work more on the food and diet side of things? EP: Yes, my focus has always been on nutrition! After my certifications for exercise nutrition, I began expanding to wholebody holistic nutrition. Four years ago I decided to do courses to get an internationally accredited holistic nutrition license. Most people that can’t lose fat, gain muscle, or have chronic aches blame their genetics. They don’t factor in years of neglect or malnutrition that is common in today’s society. The more research and experiments I did, the more I understood the body’s reaction to poor nutrition. Diet and cooking techniques have always been used in conjunction with the workout programs I developed. FFM: What is the craziest excuse you have heard someone give for why they can’t or won’t exercise or eat healthy? EP: “I’m allergic to sweat.” is probably the craziest one! At least people laugh when they say this; although I still may not get a straightforward answer later. I think the most common one would be “I want to lose weight before I start a fitness program.” FFM: What is the best tip you can give MOST readers for starting a journey towards a healthy life and achieving strength, flexibility, and their desired body? EP: The first two weeks are always the most challenging. Just make an effort to incorporate

28 ||

FITNESS

M A G A Z I N E || APRIL / MAY 2015

some form of exercise daily. It can be cardio (indoor or outdoor), weights, or stretching. Don’t limit yourself to a gym. Just stay active and slowly start progressing. A long-term goal can be very intimidating if you don’t have short-term goals to focus on along the way! Follow social media people that inspire you, start taking a class, subscribe to magazines, or get a trainer if you can. The more you surround yourself with fitness the more inspired you’ll become! FFM: How can our inspired readers get in touch with you to hire you as their personal trainer? EP: They can reach out to me on my website www.lizpour.com or on my social media @lizpour! FFM: What was the most difficult part of your recovery from your near fatal car accident? EP: Accepting that I was injured was difficult. Knowing what my body was capable of doing before the accident. Having to limit myself. I’ve always taught myself to push past limitations and goals but with fitness and health it’s about what’s appropriate for your body in the state it’s in... at that moment. Focusing on the now and trying to >>>

progress past where I was helped me see many different sides to fitness. I now feel more confident physically and esthetically. Most people never get the chance to see how amazing they can really feel. Fitness is about consistency. FFM: A lot of people say that an experience like that causes them to reevaluate their life and goals. Did that happen to you? EP: I didn’t feel the need to reevaluate my life. One of my goals has always been to be strong and healthy. Experiences makes you realize what

you can overcome and how valuable your health is. It doesn’t matter what your ambitions are. Your health is an energy source for your day and will limit you if you don’t take care of it. FFM: Any book or upcoming seminars our readers need to know about?  EP: Stay tuned; a lot is coming up in the next few months! You can follow me on Instagram @Lizpour or www.Lizpour.com for updates to see new tips, recipes, and events.

LINDSAY MC CORMICK “But that’s the definition of sports. It’s all about strategy...a chess match of sorts. Sometimes you make the right move. And other times you don’t.” Referring to the crazy end of this

year’s Super Bowl when the Seahawks made an interesting play decision that cost them the game, sports reporter and TV personality, Lindsay McCormick, is the voice of authority when it comes to all things sports-related. The blonde, Houston, Texas native grew up in a sports loving family and since college she has been on an unstoppable path towards sports broadcasting success as a female in a male-dominated world. She has found immense success with many networks, including, but not limited to: NBC “Sunday Night Football,” Fox Sports’ “Courtside Jones,” ESPN, and Esquire. com’s weekly “Monday Morning Cheerleader with Lindsay McCormick.” Most recently she was seen as the host of this year’s NFL Super Bowl live events, and got to experience the craziness and fun first hand. Fitness MOST managed to get ahold of Lindsay to find out what life is like as such a well-known and popular female sports broadcaster and get a peek into a life on the road filled with interesting personalities, numerous sports stadiums, and in general living and breathing sports! With a grandfather who was drafted by the Redskins, a dancer for a mom, a dad who played baseball growing up, and a brother who did

marketing for NASCAR races, Lindsay could not help but grow up loving sports. She says, “My family is on another level when it comes to sports. You should see my mom’s play-by-play text messages during games. When I was younger, I went to tennis camp every summer and played golf with my grandma, but dancing was my true passion. My mom was a dancer and put me in dance class when I was 2 years old. I started competing at age 7 and then transitioned into competing in ballroom after college.” However, it was her love of broadcasting that had Lindsay turning her passion for sports into a lifelong profession. As an intern for ESPN during her senior year of college, she learned from the best sports anchors and reporters in the business and produced highlights for shows including “SportsCenter,” “NBA Fastbreak,” and “Baseball Tonight.” She also began working with Eagle Eye TV and started interviewing NCAA players for the news and participating in press conferences with coaches, which further solidified her chosen career path. It is not only sports, but it’s anything health related that Lindsay feels passionate about. “I love finding new healthy restaurants, or recipes that give a unique healthy twist on typically unhealthy foods. I could live in a health food store. My favorite part of my week is when I get to go to the grocery store.” She reveals that if she was not working in broadcasting or sports, it would be in health or fitness or her other true passion, dancing. >>>

“I still take classes at the Edge Performing Arts Center in LA, but with broadcasting and hosting, I don’t have the time to devote to it to turn it into a professional thing.” owever, dancing, according to Lindsay, is the best workout one can do. “It works every single muscle in your body, while at the same time lengthening your muscles. Plus, you are having such a great time, you don’t even realize you’re exercising and getting in your cardio. I take class three days a week and then mix in a Pilates class or two with the Reformer machine. It gives me the same long and lean muscles that dance does, but also tones and adds a little definition.” With life on the road, you would think most people would have a hard time maintaining a fit body and eating healthy, but Lindsay reveals how she accomplishes just that and what her day to day routine can be like. “It varies based on the sports season and who I’m working with or covering that year. I love variety though. It keeps me fresh and on my toes. If I’m on the road, I’m working from 7am until after midnight most days. And once it does end, I’m prepping for the next day or sneaking in a late-night workout at the hotel gym around midnight.” She also divulges how she keeps her throat ready for those long days of talking, “I have to start every morning off with hot water with lemon and honey to get my throat warmed up in order to be able to talk for that many hours while working.” It definitely takes a great love of your job, combined with hard work and dedication to pull off days like that – and Lindsay manages to do it all with panache. Just as she also manages to expertly navigate a world where being a woman, albeit an advantage in certain situations, means a hardship in others, and having to prove yourself is expected.

In talking about her own experience as a woman in the business and therefore having to prove herself even more, Lindsay explains that it’s, “Every day of my life. And the more feminine you dress or look, the more you place a target on your back. If you ever see me wearing a dress, just know that I’m on my NFL A-game that day and could brief you on anything you ever wanted to know about a defense or the league in general.” That’s certainly good to know, and we will have to test Lindsay on that theory one day. Although, as someone so prepared and excellent at what she does, it’s safe to assume that Lindsay is actually always at the top of her game (or at least knows how to appear so)! She says that being a female also means you get stereotyped every time you walk into a room, specifically a network meeting. “The first few minutes are crucial and are your time to prove you can dissect defenses and know coverages.” To counter the “dumb blonde” stereotype, Lindsay came up with her own ingenious defense plan, if you can call it that. She started writing and doing radio and said her thinking is that, “No one can deny a woman is knowledgeable when she’s conversing with males on the radio and taking callers’ questions.” That’s an extremely good point, and hopefully our readers at Fitness MOST can learn a thing or two from Lindsay about refuting stereotypes. There’s no denying, however, that male reporters don’t have to deal quite as much with athlete egos and locker room antics from players as females reporters do. Lindsay said, “I once had a situation where a star athlete sent the team PR guy to ask for my number claiming to ‘want an interview at a later date.’ When I told the PR guy to relay the message that ‘he could set it up with our network and I didn’t want to give out my personal information,’ he refused to interview with me for the remainder of the season.” >>>

As someone who obviously spends a great deal of her time talking and interviewing all types of athletes and personalities, Fitness MOST had to ask Lindsay to tell us three things: who the most interesting person/people she has ever interviewed are, what was her most challenging interview to date, and who she desires to interview in the near future. As far as interesting goes, Lindsay responded, “I love any athlete that isn’t politically correct. Any athlete that will provide entertainment for readers or viewers and show that sports can be fun and a form of entertainment. With that said, I love interviewing Metta World Peace, Terrell Owens, Antonio Cromartie or Chad Ochocinco. They are true entertainers.” On the other hand, attempting to talk to someone who gives one-word answers must be the very bane of a reporter’s existence and Lindsay agrees that it is certainly true in her case, as she once had to interview an NBA player that answered every single question with a “yes” or a “no.” “I asked him about a particular play in a previous game, and he still managed to answer me with “Yeeeaaahh man.” My coworkers had worked with him before and warned me, but I thought they were joking. I was wrong! Luckily I still had 20 questions ready to fire at him to fill 3 minutes of LIVE airtime. It was awkward.” And last but not least, in answer to our question about who she desires to meet, she says it’s none other than Marshawn Lynch. “He gives reporters the same response and hates interviewing. I honestly feel bad for the guy and am glad the NFL is not fining him for his comments on Media Day at the Super Bowl. The mystery that surrounds him makes me want to find out more about him. Maybe that’s just the reporter in me.” Well the reporter in her is not only drawn to the mystery of the unknown and learning the quirks of famous athletes, but also understands that it’s

44 ||

FITNESS

M A G A Z I N E || APRIL / MAY 2015

quite often the fans who support their team every day and her co-hosts who can provide the most important and unique exchanges during an event, as Lindsay found out at the Super Bowl this year. “Getting to interact with the fans that came to watch what was happening on the NFL Experience Stage was my favorite part. Those are the diehard fans that never miss a game, save up their hardearned money to fly out to support their favorite teams, and support them with tremendous pride. They know every statistic in the book. Those are my favorite people to interact with.” Additionally, she admits that getting to host alongside some of her favorite male hosts and athletes, such as Joe Montana, one of the greatest QBs of all time, and feed off of them, teaches her a lot. While on the topic of the Super Bowl, Fitness MOST knew our readers would want a fun behind-thescenes tidbit from the most watched Super Bowl in history, and Lindsay tells us the best thing she saw. Surprisingly, it had nothing to do with football, but rather she dishes that she saw, on game day, Brazilian model and actress Adriana Lima eating a dessert parfait at the NFL Official Tailgate. “Who knew!?” exclaimed Lindsay. “She actually splurges occasionally and eats dessert. Probably not before the big fashion show though.” eeting and interacting with all these famous people every day as part of one’s daily job must be extremely entertaining, but Lindsay claims that actually her job hosting the 2012 NFL draft was her favorite so far, and she described what it was like for us. “The preparation for that was extensive though. I watched film on every player and could tell you anything you wanted to know about the top 100 guys. Every now and then an analyst would even come in my ear and ask for a name pronunciation. And I can’t think of two analysts more professional >>>

or entertaining than Pete Prisco and Will Brinson. I was constantly laughing every time we would go to commercial break. The best was when they would debate and go at it and I would have to be the ref between the two. It felt a lot like a Jon Bones Jones press conference. We found out that Seahawks owner Paul Allen was tweeting who was drafted before they even announced it, and the jokes were endless.” It sounds like Lindsay loves a good laugh, and really, who doesn’t? Yet, for Lindsay comedy is even more of a hobby than it is for some. “I’ve worked with Funny or Die on some of their political skits and play a TV Host in The Bounce Back movie with Bill Bellamy and Shemar Moore that comes out this summer, but I know I would miss sports too much if I transitioned to solely entertainment,” reveals Lindsay. “Sports are who I am. But as long as there is a sports connection to a project, I don’t mind trying new things. My dream show involves comedians and sports.” Hopefully, that can happen some day and Lindsay can be the trailblazer of a fantastic new concept. verything of course involves being on camera an incredible amount of time and in the public eye, and as such, Lindsay knows the importance of always looking amazing. We already found out what she does for a workout, so we also had to ask what she eats and take notes; because if this road-tripping, hard-working woman can do all she does and still stay svelte, then everyone can aspire to do the same. Her favorite food is this amazing vegan and gluten-free mac and cheese with coconut bacon and chives – yum! And she reveals that, “Even when I’m on the road, I’ll find time when I first arrive in a city to stop by a Whole Foods and get protein bars, snacks for the week, almonds and coconut water. I even had a cooler on the Sunday Night Football Bus with

almond milk in it. The guys on the bus made fun of me at first, but then were begging me for tips by the end of the season. For breakfast I usually order scrambled eggs with no butter or oil and a bowl of fruit from room service. Then I’m at the mercy of the ballpark or media room on game day. I will say that New York stadiums have a lot of great glutenfree options though.” Although, she hasn’t been to the famous Lambeau Field stadium yet, so perhaps she will find some delicious cheesy options there! In fact, that’s the only stadium she has yet to visit, and says she can’t wait to see the Lambeau Leap in person. It’s no doubt that Lindsay will very soon make it there, as well as interview anyone she desires, as she continues to be an inspiration for all those sports-loving women out there, and really all those sports-loving people everywhere!

JAY SULLIVAN Q&A FMM: Can you tell us about yourself and how you got started in photography? JS: I grew up with a great family in a small town in Maine. I have two older brothers and a mom and dad that are still married today. I was a normal kid who liked to draw, skateboard, ski, play music, I was a drummer in a few different bands in high school. I tended to raise a little hell from time to time as we do in sleepy little towns :) I did photography in high school and loved it but never thought of myself as a photographer and didn’t know a career was possible in it. Before art school, I spent a couple years in Vail Colorado where I got a job as a Mountain photographer taking pics of families, trick skiers and snowboarders and spring breakers. I loved it, and it was during that time I decided what kind of job I wanted to have… it felt good not just taking pictures, but making people like themselves. FMM: Are you a self-taught photographer? Did you start as a fitness photographer? JS: Somewhat... I think we all are in some way self-taught. I did go to art school and learned how to use a camera and process film and print and critique other people’s work and those fundamental things, but the real knowledge comes from experience. I had assisted different photographers for six years before I made it out on my own. I certainly learned what not to do from everyone, but what to do came from within. Finding a subject matter to specialize in came directly from working with an adventure photographer when I moved to New York back in 2001. One of his biggest clients was SELF Magazine and we traveled all over shooting fitness and fitness fashion / lifestyle and I decided then I wanted that to be my career. It had

52 ||

all the elements I cared about in photography… action, beauty, fashion & composition. I was surprised it was not more popular. FMM: Did you have to transition from film to digital? JS: Actually yes. I am fortunate enough to be one of the photographers that was trained in film in art school and started my professional career in digital. I honestly don’t think I would have made it if I had to rely on film… It is not only expensive, but very time consuming. Digital gave me the freedom to shoot and deliver the same day, which clients could not believe in the beginning. Now it is the norm. FMM: What was your first digital camera and what camera are you using today? JS: First digital camera was a Canon EOS 1D Mark II. I remember walking into Adorama one day knowing exactly what I wanted and the possibilities it would allow me to do. I threw down my credit card, and it was the most important $4000 I ever spent. I used it until two years ago when I bought a 5D Mark II that I use today. I like to use my gear to its fullest :) FMM: What is your all-time favorite camera/lens combination? JS: Depends on what I am shooting, but I’d say my go to is the 50mm f/1.2L. It has the right amount of width I like without influencing the shoot too much. I typically use this for action shots. For close up I use the 100mm f/2.8L pretty much every time, and for outdoor 70-200mm f/2.8L is my newest love. >>>

FMM: You have a studio in NYC, what percentage of your projects shot in the studio vs outdoor? JS: Yes, I do. I’ve been in it now for just over five years. It is my creative den of possibilities… being able to use the space and develop shots that have a signature look to them is everything to me. I do love shooting outdoors and seeing things in a completely different way, but when in NYC and having a studio means you shoot in the studio, it’s about 80% indoor and 20% outdoor. I even rent it to other photographers when I have days where I’m stuck in frot of the computer all day… people seem to enjoy it’s charm and I get to mingle with new people all the time. FMM: Do you offer workshops in your studio? JS: I’ve been asked to, but quite honestly I like the one on one approach. I love sharing my experience with upcoming photographers, but haven’t gotten the itch to share it to the mass market. There are a lot of shooters out there that do this kind of thing. I don’t consider myself that kind of photographer. FMM: You also design websites, how did you get involved with designing websites? JS: I do. I started dabbling with HTML when I built my first website and years later I’m still doing it. These days large scalable images and responsive websites are winning and I thought this would be a good place for my photography, so bringing those two worlds together just meant I could bring in more revenue to the studio and gave me another creative outlet. However, photography will always be my main focus. FMM: When you are out shooting fitness, how much of it is instinctual versus planned? JS: Interesting question… I always approach a shoot or picture-to-be with something in mind and somehow whether it is just being in the moment or it’s the talent in front of me or lighting, it shifts from a very planned thing to something else. Once I

shoot a test frame and see the nuance of the shot, things suddenly change. I try to adapt to it and strengthen the shot so everybody wins in the end :) FMM: What do you hope your viewers to take away from your work? JS: Well, I’m not the business of thought provoking imagery or timelessness, but at the very least I would like people to say, “ That guy gets it.” I put a lot of time into shooting action and movement based photography and figuring out not only how to capture something that looks interesting, but then how to light it so it brings more strength to a picture is something that takes experience. I’ve dedicated the past eight years to this kind of work and want that to come through so that the model in the shot can shine FMM: What advice would you give to our aspiring readers if you had to start photography all over again? JS: Hmmmm… if I had to start all over again I would have probably spent my earlier years in business school and marketing. I never realized how much of the photo business has to do with making sound financial decisions and creative marketing strategy. Especially now a days... if you have a great marketing plan you can wow a client even if you’re not that experienced. Clients love this stuff, and I wished I had done this more when I was starting out. FMM: Do you make any requests of your subjects in terms of preparation for your fitness photo shoot? JS: Depends on the kind of shoot I’m doing. If it’s a physique competitor then there is a routine they have to go through to deplete their bodies of water and make them lean out and more vascular right before the shoot. If it’s a newbie, it’s totally different. I ask them to do some research on what kinds of pictures they like and moves they can create and show them to me so I can help them >>>

achieve their goals. I find this helpful in getting them prepared for their first shoot. If it is an experienced model who specializes in fitness they pretty much know what to do and most of them maintain their bodies so they are always in top form. FMM: Are you very hands on with the post processing of the digital files? JS: Yes. I do 95% of my own post processing and retouching. I find for me it makes a better picture when there is the same eye from inception to completion. Plus I love the process of showing people a before and after. I find that a lot of people have never seen what is possible in a more natural way. They only hear the negative side of retouching which is a whole other discussion. FMM: Of all the images you’ve taken in your career, which is your favorite and why? JS: I don’t get too attached to my images for very long. I love it for a couple weeks maybe then I’m on to the next. I get sick of artwork quickly and just have to see something new and different. That said, I am still obsessed with this feature story that says a lot since I shot it six months ago. FMM: What’s the most important thing you want potential clients to know about you? JS: I love what I do and hopefully that shows in my work and in my nature. I want to deliver the best possible product, so that we all can be excited to share the work with others. It’s important to me that a clean atmosphere & positive energy are present on set. Big egos and forceful attitudes must be checked at the door. I believe that motivating people produces a higher success rate than criticism. This too comes with a lot of experience ;)

Q&A

By: Darcy Tharp

FMM: I love that you adhere to the principle that you walk a middle ground and are not a zealot, but rather you speak to the average woman and are committed to creating a healthy lifestyle for your own family and helping others do the same. What do you say about some people who take green living to the extreme? How do you differentiate or what is your limit? SU: I just think that taking “green” to an extreme can be very hard for most people to get their head around - where do you stop? I think it’s important to understand how “green living” fits into your current life style. If you really want to live your life with more compassion - more consciously, you can start making small changes where it seems appropriate, and in areas that matter to you. Where some people go whole hog by powering their cars of recycled restaurant oil, or eating a 100% raw diet, others like to make small steps. One is not better than the other. The key is to inspire others with your actions, not alienate them! FMM: Do you get to return to and visit England often, where you say it all started in your mother’s vegetable garden and were you were educated? SU: Sadly, I only get to go once or twice a year, but when I go, I do a long visit to see all my family and friends. Being with my mother always reminds me of the “vegetable” garden where I came from. My mother is also really frugal and cannot bear to waste one lettuce leaf, so it’s good for me to be around her because she’s so creative and resourceful.

FMM: What is your favorite meal that is both delicious and healthy? Complete with app, entre, and dessert? (You may be helping MOST readers plan their next dinner party) SU: Hmmm, okay: App: Roasted baby beet salad on a bed or wild arugula with toasted walnuts. Entree: Acorn squash stuffed with shitake mushrooms, chestnuts and various veggies, with pomegranate studded red quinoa on the side. Dessert: Vegan chocolate torte with vanilla cashew ice cream. FMM: What are the most challenging and rewarding parts of your job? SU: The most challenging part is the timemanagement factor! I have so many things going on that it’s really tough to give each area the time and value that it needs. I am leaning to delegate to try to work “smarter.” It’s also challenging not to let social media drain my time and energy too. The most rewarding part is when I just know in my gut that I am doing something (either on TV, in a talk, or in a book) that is going to help change someone’s life for the better. That is what it’s all about, and it makes the crazy early mornings and late nights SO worth it. FMM: If you had a meeting with the leader of every country in the world and could tell them anything you want, what would you say? SU: I’d say that you have to invest in education, and make this the TOP priority. When people get the information they need, they can make better choices. It is lack of a proper education that spawns most of the dire problems we face

today. When I learned about what we were doing to the planet, I started to change - had I not had a really good teacher in this space, I would never have known. Education expands our awareness and our consciousness to live better lives, and to understand that ultimately we are all in this together. What I do to the planet and others, comes right back to me. FMM: What can people who do not have the money for things like organic groceries, air filters, or bottled water etc, do to still try to live a healthier, green life? What’s the best DIY project of yours that you believe people should do? SU: Great question! First off, you have to figure out your priorities. Many say they don’t have the time or money, but you can always find a way. Cooking vegan food reduces your grocery bill enough to be

able to afford organic produce. An inexpensive water filter jug can save you tons of money that you might otherwise spend on bottled water. It’s always about making smarter choices. There are so many DIY’s, but off the top of my head, if you make your own almond milk, you can save money. Actually, if you make your own everything, you can save money (hummus, guacamole, soups, jellies etc). Also DIY skin care can save a lot of money too. FMM: I know you are a yoga teacher-do you mainly do that to stay fit or what is your exercise routine? SU: I exercise in some way 6 days a week, and I change it up. Sometimes I do yoga at home (just 20 minutes), and sometimes I go take a Pilates Plus (LOVE) class, or go spin. I walk the dog every day.

The key is that as I get older, I have to challenge myself. Without pushing myself, everything goes into decline (ugh - I know). Flexibility, strength, cardio and balance all have to be addressed in my workout plan. FMM: On your website you say you are a “Beauty Flexitarian” on the middle ground between “enhancement” and “the one nature intended”- What is one product or beauty routine you could not live without? SU: Vitamin C serum! FMM: We are excitedly awaiting the release of your fourth book, Gorgeous for Good- do you have any other projects you are working on at the moment? I don’t know how you find the time! SU: I am on Hallmark’s “Home & Family” show 2 days a week, as their resident healthy living expert, so I have to come up with a multitude of segments

64 ||

FITNESS

M A G A Z I N E || APRIL / MAY 2015

for them. I am about to create a very exciting app, and I am in the process of creating an online “Liveit Healthy” educational school. FMM: Can you tell us one exciting tidbit or tip from the book? SU: I can just tell you that it’s a 30-day program, which if you adhere to, will set you on the right track for the rest of your life. It’s easy to do, and is frankly a gift that I wish every woman would give to herself. FMM: In your previous life you were an actressany desire to be on a film set again? SU: None! The life of an actress is brutal. I did it from the age of 18 - 30, and that was enough. I achieved everything I wanted to do in that time, working with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and doing many West End plays in London - I think I just got it out of my system, and realized that I

wanted to put my creative energies into something more meaningful for me. FMM: Is your daughter going to grow up being into beauty as much as you are; does she like to help you and learn about what you are doing? What kind of legacy do you hope to leave behind for her? SU: She is just 13 and a little rebellious right now, so I am very careful not to push her too hard in the “healthy” department. I am just trusting that she will grow up learning by example. We model to our children what it is to live a great and useful life, and I am confident that when the time is right, she will evolve into a beautiful, kind, and compassionate woman. She is so much more mature than I was at her age. She is a musician and has a beautiful voice (something I never had!!!), so I hope she will use that talent to give people pleasure too. FMM: You have already achieved and accomplished an incredible amount-what keeps you motivated and fresh and excited about the projects you work on? SU: I just love to create. I am never happy sitting still for too long. I am always in my sweet spot when I am creating something - whether it is a new vegan dinner experiment, a book, or a huge event, I lose myself in what I am doing, and it feels fantastic. That’s what motivates me. FMM: Tell us about a time when you saw or heard first-hand from someone that your work was making an impact? SU: It was when my first book, Gorgeously Green, launched on Oprah in 2008. I started to get emails from women across the country - really moving emails that floored me because it gave

me a glimpse into how many truly good and thoughtful people there are out there -women who want to make a difference in a small way, no matter their resources. FMM: What is one beauty problem or issue that you desire to create something for in the future? SU: I would love to find a way to straighten hair without toxic chemicals. My daughter has very curly, thick/frizzy hair, and it would be a huge time-saver for her to be able to have it smoothed and straightened. But the only ingredient that will successfully do this right now is formaldehyde, which is a carcinogen. Oh - and I would love there to be a non-toxic alternative to Botox (for cosmetic and medical purposes). FMM: What is one thing you want the readers at MOST to know about you? SU: That I am the same as them! Underneath all our various differences, I think we all have the desire to be wanted, needed, and loved. As I get older, I realize that the key to getting whatever I need is to GIVE it first. I need to make the people around me feel wanted, needed, and loved first. I am so NOT perfect in every area. I just get up in the morning and strive to make some kind of a difference, and to live each day as beautifully as I can. Like most of you, my life hasn’t always been easy, but my biggest spiritual growth has come from the most painful times.

An international Training Coordinator and exclusive distributor of Kangoo Jumps in several European countries www.facebook.com/sebestyenkinga | www.kangooclub.ro

Ms. Sebestyen is a fitness enthusiast. She is an international Training Coordinator and exclusive distributor of Kangoo Jumps in several European countries. Kangoo Jumps are rebound sport shoes that are worn during choreographed programs from dance to boot camp. Sebastian has transformed

Kangoo Jumps rebound shoes into a national and international phenomenon since she began with the company in the mid 2000’s. Kangoo Jumps is a sport that has been practiced in Romania for eight years due to Kinga’s sustained promotion and support.

Sebaestyen uses Kangoo Jumps for more than just exercise. She has taken this exercise program and used it as a means to raise money and awareness for programs that provide assistance to children with cancer and their families. She organizes Kangoo Jumps for Life Charity Events, funds from these events have gone towards renovation of a wing of Fundeni National Hospital in Bucharest. These funds also supported the building of the Little Starts Center which enables parents of children suffering from cancer to receive counseling and logistical support. Sebestyen has launched and developed a fat burning program: Fat Burning by Kinga - the most fun way of losing weight, With Fat Burning by Kinga,

she has developed a special method to help get rid of the extra pounds, covering all aspects of a complete weight loss program, exercise, nutritional counseling, supplements, mentoring, monitoring and motivation! She is high energy and dedicated to all the programs she is involved with; she is infectious with a great follow-ing of supporters and fitness fanatics. FFM: How is it that you became so passionate for cancer support? KS: I have been working with lots of people my whole career. Some of them have been healthy, some dealing with diseases or recovering from surgeries. Originally Kangoo Jumps was used to aid athletes recovering from leg injuries. I am a very open and friendly person and I have developed strong connections with most of my clients. Therefore, I have a sense of what problems they are dealing with. I have also worked with people with cancer, including children. The exercise we do together lifts their spirits and makes them more confident. This is how I met the representatives of MAME Association which takes care of children with cancer. I proposed that we do an annual charity event and have people come and do Kangoo Jumps with me and donate money to MAME. We’ve organized six annual events and I am happy I had the chance to help. I am a mother of two and I know how important it is to know your children are healthy. When I first entered the >>>

hospital and went to the wing dedicated to kids suffering with cancer, I was amazed to see that they were all sleeping in tiny rooms, the parents could only sleep near them in chairs. We helped buy furniture, lamps, carpeting, etc. Now they have decent conditions to heal within. They all also have Kangoo Jumps boot and are happy. I was so happy when I saw the drawings them made for me. FFM: Is it just one cancer non-profit agency or several? Can you provide the names? KS: Until now I have only worked with MAME Association programs, but I am open to becoming involved with other activities that cherish life and health FFM: Can you share a couple of stories about some kids you have worked with through your cancer advocacy? KS: The kids we support are all brave and are examples to us. In spite of all of their suffering and the medical treatments, they simple cherish life more than we do. We take things for granted, complain that we don’t have the latest gadget or car. We kind of forget what life is all about and that love and support for others is most important. I have been blessed with two children who won the battle against cancer, who are now healthy and studying for careers of their own Their battles are examples for me and for everybody. The first Kangoo Jumps for Life was so successful that we used the funds to send a seven year old boy, Albert, suffering from leukemia to have surgery in Germany. Today he is strong and healthy and going to school like a normal child. FFM: You have the opportunity to travel to so many wonderful places. Do you have the

opportunity sight see? What do you like to do when traveling when you are not working? KS: I am the Kangoo Jumps distributor in several European countries. This is why I am always on the road. I spend one week in Romania, for example, then one in Bulgaria, Serbia or Sweden. I visit each country to take of a lot of business related matters, even though I have teams that are representing me. So when I travel for work I do not have time for sight-seeing. Sometimes my personal can be affected by so much travel. I haven’t had a normal vacation in a long time. FFM: When you do go on vacation do you prefer to relax, see everything you can or shop? KS: When I get the chance to vacation, I prefer to relax the first day and after that to visit as much as I can. I like to experience new things, to discover new cultures, beautiful places and traditional foods. I am not crazy about shopping, but I always enjoy sports while vacationing. At least half an hour of jogging or cardio, it is in my blood and I thank God for this. FFM: Could you explain the structure of all of your businesses and how they tie together, for example, is your Fat Burning by Kinga part of the Kangoo Jumps, do you have your own store to sell the Kangoo Jumps; do you have an exercise studio? KS: I am the official distributor of Kangoo Jumps boots in Romania and several other European Countries. which I created to achieve the best results with losing fat and weight. It involves personalized easy diet and fitness routines. FFM: You appear to be a high energy person, are you like that at home too? Do you find it difficult to unwind? KS: Yes, I have always been an energetic person due to my job and my lifestyle. My body and mind are trained to be strong and resilient to effort and stress. The exercise I have been doing all of my life help me be this way. Even my family is amazed how I manage to do everything, considering I am not in my 20’s anymore. FFM: How do you re-energize yourself? KS: I do not drink coffee, but I do get energy from grapefruit juice or fresh pineapple. I drink lots of water, take vitamins, use the sauna and have massages. FFM: Are you a foodie, do you enjoy cooking? KS: I do not have time to cook and that’s why I haven’t learned to become great in the kitchen. I am always on the road and eat in restaurants. FFM: Are there any sports you are not good at? KS: Any that involve balls, no good at volleyball, basketball, handball etc.

FFM: Do they still travel with you? KS: We used to travel together up until 4 or 5 years ago until they moved to Canada. Now I am the one that visits them. FFM: What are you most proud about each of them? KS: We have strong connections. They are my best friends. They are good kids, sincere. Alex calls me every day to see if I am OK, if I ate and slept enough. They want me to be happy. FFM: Do you have any sponsors, if so what can you tell us about them? KS: Nike provides the sport outfits. ProNutrition the supplementary food, vitamins, and protein bars, Tussled the still and mineral water. Tania Salon provides the eyelashes, hairstyle and skincare. FFM: I was reading about your recent birthday party. Clearly you have a large group of friends that care a lot for you. KS: It was the biggest and happiest surprise of my life. For my birthday, my friends from all over the world arranged via the internet and donated money so that they could bring my children from Canada to Romania. I didn’t know a thing about it and was amazed when I saw them coming with the birthday cake. I felt I had so many friends that loved and appreciated me.

FFM: Tell us about your children. KS: My daughter, Sunshine is 21 years old. She lives in Canada where she is a manager of a Mexican restaurant. She likes to cook. Last year she lost almost 70 pounds with Fat Burning. I am so proud of her. My son, Alex, is 18 and has been living in Canada for four years. He likes sports and lives a healthy lifestyle and wants to become a NHL professional.

SARAH LYONS

By: Rachel Greiner

arah Lyons was born in the 70’s in San Francisco, CA. The only daughter to a multi-talented, true hippie couple, Sarah was surrounded by artistic influence her entire life. Her grandfather was a nature photographer in Alaska. Her father was the Foreign and National News Editor for The Seattle Times. Both her mother and grandmother are known for their amazing vocals and her brother is a famous rock star, currently performing in the Las Vegas show Million Dollar Quartet. Despite omnipresent inspiration growing up, however, when career-minded Sarah saw financial opportunity for herself in the real estate market, she went for it. Residing in Scottsdale, AZ Sarah was doing quite well for herself, until 2008 when the economy suddenly crashed. The downfall of the market resulted in her unemployment and she knew she had to do something to overcome the economic battle she would soon be facing. Little did she know, this would be the fresh start she needed that would allow her to tap into her own channels of creativity. Excited to delve into something new, Sarah purchased an amateur lighting kit and a camera off eBay. She had always admired the work of photographers she’d seen online and recognized the situation as the perfect opportunity to try it herself, though she knew it wouldn’t be an easy transition - emotionally or financially.

“My biggest struggle was making sure I had a roof over my head! When things aren’t working, you need to recognize that and fix it to better yourself.” She quickly became completely immersed in honing her newfound skillset, focusing on all of the learning curves photography brings. Having worked as a model years earlier, Sarah started out working with some of her friends as her subjects, and put her experience to use with her ability to instruct her models in regards to their posing, body language and facial expressions. She experimented daily with Photoshop and other programming skills to perfect her unique style, and traveled to LA to shoot every chance she got. Eventually, after working with the likes of Playboy Playmates, television show hosts, and Maxim models her persistence paid off, landing her a >>>

growing list of magazine covers including FHM, Status Fitness and Planet Muscle. A long way from where she started, the most challenging part of her job these days is worrying about her gear getting damaged while traveling. …Well, that and the bone she has to pick with some others she has encountered in the industry. “It is challenging for me dealing with other photographers that work for free. It cuts into my livelihood and cheapens why we do what we do. Politically, I stay right with myself and don’t sell out by working for free.” Working with the best artists and stylists in the industry, and occasionally assisted by her lighting technician, Jez, Sarah has made a reputable name for herself with PictureGroove Photography. She prides herself on the all-inclusive shoots she provides her clients, which include wardrobe styling, hair & makeup, as well as the added option of a 90 minute one-on-one coaching

session designed to optimize clients’ results. “PictureGroove Bootcamp is mainly for women. It takes place the day before the shoot and we overcome objectives, look in the mirror at poses, facial expressions, body language and things like that. It helps people to not be so nervous in front of the camera.” Nominated as one of the Top 10 Fitness Photographers in the world, Sarah’s fun and lighthearted energy may be the only aspect of her shoots more renowned than her skill level. Known for her out-of-the-box way of thinking, she strives to make her clients happy with the results, having fun along the way. “Knowing that I can wake up and do what I LOVE doing makes me a very happy person. I love to laugh and have fun on my shoots!” Sarah has built her customer base by consistently impressing clients with her bold use of colors and textures, and says she personally >>>

would describe her style as “a little edgy with a colorful touch.” At this point in her career, Sarah is focused mainly on shooting in her home state of Arizona, where the weather is always ideal for her to get outside and get to work! She is always seeking new challenges in her craft and maintains her versatility, enabling her to cater to any client request. And, while shooting fit and glamour models got her foot in the door, she has since expanded her horizons booking shoots for families and high-end weddings as well. Thriving on growing with her business, when she doesn’t have her Canon in hand, Sarah stays busy with other exciting challenges photography has ultimately led her to. She is currently in the midst of starting her own line of fashion-forward bikinis, and manages PictureGroove Tanning, a mobile spray tanning company based in Arizona. “I think that things happened exactly the way they were supposed to. I would love to keep evolving as an artist, and I trust that will happen, with patience and hard work.”

BOBBY HOLLAND HANTON

By: Darcy Tharp

tunt double Bobby Holland Hanton, schooled in everything from gymnastics to high diving, to portraying superheroes sat down with Fitness MOST to dish on who his favorite actors are that he has portrayed, what the life of a stunt double is like, and give us an exclusive peek into a world that most people know nothing about. He tells us how he went from gymnast to semi-pro footballer, to portraying some of the most famous faces in Hollywood from Daniel Craig in Bond to Christian Bale in Batman, and Chris Hemsworth as Thor to name just a few. Bobby has always been a performer from a young age and grew up doing live action shows, pantomimes, modeling, and various TV shows, and he brings his hardworking attitude and dedication to every project he works on. To encourage others to get in shape, stay fit, and perhaps attain physical perfection like himself, he is opening his own gym in England in April. The Body Shape Studios opening first in Surbiton, Surrey is going to be offering the EMS

studio concept (Electro Muscle Stimulation) which is the most effective body shaping, weight loss, and muscle strengthening technology that is currently available on the market. Bobby also has some big, exciting movies on the way, coming out in 2015, and as is often the case with most things, it is the incredible work of the people in the background who are the forces behind making something happen, and happen brilliantly. Bobby is one of those people, and we can be sure to see his efforts shine through in all of his upcoming parts and projects.

FMM: It took you four years to become a stunt double-that takes a great amount of dedication, did you ever waiver from it or did you know it was a worthwhile effort and something you truly wanted to do? BHH: It can take longer in some cases, but it is roughly four years across the board with hard work. Once I decided that’s what I wanted to do, then yes I went for it. I worked in live shows to get enough money to then go and train with it to get my stunt qualifications. Once I was focused that’s all I wanted to do. FMM: You started out as a gymnast-do you ever miss it? What was the most challenging aspect of being a gymnast and competing? BHH: In some ways I miss gymnastics yes. It was my life from the age of 4 until I was 17 and it was 5-6 days a week, 4-5 hours per session, so I don’t miss that side of it! I didn’t have any time to do anything else. The most challenging thing for me especially in my later years in gymnastics and competing was the fact I was 6ft tall at the age of 16 and for a gymnast that’s the last thing you want is to be tall; so much harder to control your center of gravity! So I suffered competing because of it as my levers were much longer than most.

was similar to the SAS swimming test I think. It was a lot of breath holding after a lot of laps-an assault course under water, swimming with clothes on, etc. It was full on for an hour for the test, but I got through it and was very happy with my achievement as I took 6 months out of work to swim every day to pass it! FMM: Who was the coolest or most fun celebrity you have worked alongside thus far? BHH: I have been lucky enough to work with some great actors so far in my career! But I’d say the stand out is Chris Hemsworth; he is amazing, and as I am now in his contract I do everything with him and he’s a great friend and a great professional. He’s brilliant to work with and he really looks after me, so it’s great to work with someone closely who is also such a nice humble and down to earth guy. Channing Tatum is brilliant, and I loved working with him and we got along great. Also, Christian Bale on Batman was a true professional and an honor to work with.

FMM: When did you ever feel afraid or nervous during a shoot or stunt? BHH: To be honest a lot of stunts I do I have nerves at the beginning as it’s the unknown but that soon turns into an adrenaline rush and a buzz that’s hard to explain. I think that’s why I love what I do and keep coming back for more.

FMM: You were a semi-pro footballer, did you ever have aspirations to be a full-time pro player? What team do you support and cheer for? BHH: Yeah my football career started very late as gymnastics was my life until I retired at 17 so by the time I focused on football and gave it my all it was just a bit too late. As the standard of football as most will know is so high these days, you have to be committed from a very young age! But I did love my football and miss it a lot. I follow Arsenal and Roma.

FMM: What was the most difficult skill to qualify for during your training? BHH: The most difficult I’d say was swimming for me!! They had just recently at the time changed the test and made it much more difficult, and it

FMM: Describe for MOST what was the most fun movie or project you have worked on so far? BHH: The stand out for me was my first ever movie Bond Quantum of Solace stunt doubling Daniel Craig. It was such a huge opportunity; I was only >>>

23 at the time so it was full on but in a good way, and I learned so many valuable things. Batman the Dark Knight Rises was also incredible; I was stunt doubling Batman, a childhood favorite, with a great cast, great locations, and an incredible director. It was over all such an amazing experience and team! Thor and Avengers too were pretty huge and great memories for me. FMM: Have you ever been injured or had an accident during a stunt? If there were numerous, what was the worst? BHH: It’s the nature of the beast. We are always going to pick up little injuries, knocks, and bruises here and there; it’s part and parcel of what we do, but that’s why we have a long period of rehearsals before the film starts shooting so we can eliminate as much danger as possible! I had a fairly bad back injury while I was filming in the states on the Green Lantern which took me a fair bit of time to

recover. I did though and came back to full fitness, and the whole experience made me stronger. FMM: Have you ever turned down a stunt for any reason or simply because it was too dangerous? BHH: Errrrm…no, I haven’t yet to date! That’s not really something we do as stunt performers. Plus coordinators will pick the best person for the job; that’s generally how it works, and then rehearsals are the time to get it right and make sure you can do it on the day. FMM: Is there a specific stunt that you desire to do and have yet to try, or a burning desire to learn a certain one? BHH: There are a few things I would like to do... Like hang from a helicopter or do a 100ft high fall onto fire, but let’s see, hopefully one day I would also like to train and learn more car stuff as that’s >>>

something I have not done much of. You can never learn too much, and I’m always keen to learn. Ben Collins the Stig from Top Gear is a close friend of mine and keeps promising me he will take me out and train me but that has not happened yet! FMM: What is your day to day routine like in terms of fitness and diet and exercise? BHH: Depending on the job or the actor I am stunt doubling, it really depends on my routine. For example, if I am doubling Hemsworth as Thor, then I am training 6 days a week, sometimes twice a day and eating 6-7 meals a day to get to the size I need to be. It’s a job in itself, as he’s so big when he’s playing that character and naturally bigger than me anyway. But it’s up to me to get to where I need to get to, but I like the challenge. FMM: What are you working on currently and do you have any projects lined up? BHH: I don’t think I can say too much about what I’m currently working on but its huge I can tell you that much. It will be out later this year, along with some other big stuff coming up too which I’m looking forward to, so it’s a busy year ahead. I have a lot of big movies coming out this year: Jupiter Ascending, Avengers 2, Heart of the Sea, Star Wars, and Bond so it’s a big year all around. FMM: During a movie or commercial or shoot, have you found that you have been able to bring your own ideas, creativity, and experience to the project? BHH: Yes, the beauty of the job is that we do sometimes have creative input which makes it that much better! And we work with some great teams who have great vision and ideas so we all work together to get a great result. FMM: Is there something that you want MOST readers to know about the world of being a stunt double and about yourself? BHH: Yeah there’s a lot about it that people don’t realize. We are one of the first groups of people

on a movie and one of the last to leave when it comes to the shooting crew. As I said before, those rehearsal periods that are so important can sometimes be 12 weeks before the film even starts shooting, depending on how much action there is. So a lot of the time, we can be on a movie for 9 months; it becomes such a big part of your life so you care about the results a lot, and the main point of our job is making it look like it’s all the actor and that’s the most important!!! If the audience says “oh that’s a stunt guy doing that” then we are not doing the job properly. FMM: If you weren’t doing something fitness related, what would you be doing? What are your other passions and hobbies? BHH: Good question, I really don’t know!! My whole life has been performing; that’s all I know, so I’d like to think it would still be something in the industry, but for sure not something sitting still; that’s never been possible for me!

NOEL DAGANTA By: Darcy Tharp

“Personality on camera is important.”

Commenting on what makes for a great fitness model, photographer Noel Daganta is the man who knows. With a multi-cultural background, as a Filipino-American and a true love for his craft, Noel seamlessly melds his visual talents with a project’s specific needs and creates stunning images. As a US Navy vet, having served in the Gulf War and earning two combat zone medals, Noel went on to discover his true passion, that of filmmaking and especially photography. As a self-taught photographer, Noel began working in 2009, initially helping a good friend make it in the modeling world. He moved to Los Angeles, established his own studio in LA’s Fashion District, and quickly carved out a lucrative career for himself, photographing numerous models, actors, Hollywood celebrities, and TV personalities for various magazines and billboards all over the world. With spreads and ad campaigns in fitness magazines such as Muscle & Fitness, Oxygen, and Iron Man, he has also shot videos and done work for the British Broadcasting Corporation, Active Channel, and ESPN. He is one of the most published fitness photographers in the world in recent years and Fitness MOST Magazine was lucky to get ahold of the busy photographer to chat about his life, photographic style, upcoming projects, and how to be the perfect model.

personality on camera is important. Look great physically, have good tan when you shoot, bring appropriate outfits, and play with your strengths. Your strength could be a great personality, nice abs, great hair, great posing, etc. Also, practice your poses beforehand. Know what looks great on you and what makes you comfortable. The photo shoot is not the time to learn how to pose.

FFM: Tell us about your projects in British Broadcasting Corporation, Active Channel, and ESPN? ND: I mainly shot news, documentary, and video segments for BBC with correspondents based in LA-mainly BBC Mundo and BBC Persia. Active Channel videos were shot through the show “LA Muscle TV.”

FFM: Do you work only with established models? ND: No, I work with all clients. I only do paid shoots.

FFM: You have earned two combat zone medals during the Gulf War-Do you think the experience gave you a different perspective in photography? ND: No, not really. I’ve always been good visually.

FFM: How would you describe your style? ND: Commercial, magazine friendly, not too artsy, not too sexy, modern, crisp

ND: I felt validated because I was new to the ship and proved myself really quickly. FFM: Do you think your multi-cultural background gives you a different perspective in approaching clients and your craft of photography? ND: Not only in photography, but I think in life in general. I am more sensitive to different point of view, life or art, and the wider experience really gave me an edge of a better understanding about life in general. FFM: Your resume is full of accomplishmentsDo you believe you were born a talented artist or did you have to work very hard at it? What gives you the motivation? ND: I think talent in general is something you were born with. There is a range just as much as some people are born smarter than others. FFM: What type of cameras do you shoot with? ND: Canon 5d, 6d, 7d FFM: What advice do you have for the folks who want to get into fitness photography? ND: Only do it if you’re passionate about it. Just like in any other photography, only the top really makes money. FFM: Your hobbies include weightlifting and hiking-do you have routine? How do you manage to keep yourself disciplined with your busy schedule? ND: I am extremely busy right now but I keep fitness in my schedule at least 3 times a week whether its gym, cardio, or hiking.

FFM: You also shoot fashion-how do you balance your time between various styles of photography? Do you shoot from time to time just for yourself or are all of your shootings project-driven? ND: All my shoots are project driven. I cater to what’s needed. FFM: How much time do you spend in your studio? Do you prefer studio shooting or onsite projects? ND: I prefer outside shoots because they are more challenging. Studio is something I do all the time. However, I don’t like traveling for photoshoots unless it’s really worth it, creatively and/or financially. Traveling as a photographer with all your gears can be hard. FFM: What are your career goals in the next 5 years? ND: Direct films, be a successful entrepreneur, and do photography projects that I am really passionate about. TROY BYER

By: Darcy Tharp

“In order to ‘not lose yourself’ it is important to participate in activities that we personally enjoy – with or without our partner’s involvement. It’s also important to simply have alone time.” That’s the advice of the “Heartbreak Recovery Specialist” Troy Byer, who is talking about how to not to lose ourselves once in a relationship. She points out that merging identities happens quite often when insecurity is present, so it is imperative to stay true to what you love doing on your own. The best-selling author, actor, director, and producer has a multitude of insights into relationships and how to heal after heartbreak. Troy got her start as an actress appearing in a number of movies and TV roles, and later gained her knowledge into breakups from her own personal experiences. She has since gone on to counsel countless others and make a career out of writing, producing, and giving advice. Not only is she talented in the writing and film world, but she already has her MA in Depth Psychology and is currently studying to earn her doctorates degree. With her second book on the way and the release of her film on DVD and digital download coming out in April, Troy is constantly excelling in many areas. When asked what she enjoys the most of all her various projects, she responded, “I love it all. The most important thing to me is that whatever I am doing, it must be consistent with my brand’s intention and that is to “empower and inspire.” ell, empower and inspire she sure does. Troy can be seen as regular on the Steve Harvey show giving advice, offers her own one-on-one-guidance, and even holds heartbreak recovery counseling (HRC) sessions. She says that she’d love to be doing it even more often and dreams to one day have HRC meetings be as widely available as AA meetings. “I am a firm believer that no one should ever have to suffer alone. The suicide rate is so sad, and I am literally moved to tears when I think of the absolute

110 ||

FITNESS

M A G A Z I N E || APRIL / MAY 2015

pain one has to be in before deciding to take his or her life. If I could, I would just give the entire planet a big hug.” That is exactly why Troy is loved and revered by everyone who comes into contact with her. And it is easy to understand why, as she only desires to help and motivate people to be happy. Her personal experience with divorce is partly where she gained her understanding and realized the need for others to learn how to heal their heart in order to move on and find happiness again. She divulges that, “After my husband and I divorced, I chose to only acknowledge the great things about him. And as a result, we both experienced the pain caused by breakup, but very little suffering. My knowledge is derived from years of research and working with individuals suffering from heartbreak. Neuroscience has a lot to say about heartbreak and the literal impact heartbreak pain has on the body, specifically the brain.” Thus, she wrote down her action plan for how to be free after heartbreak and turned it into an Amazon best-selling self-help book entitled, “ExFree: 9 Keys to Freedom After Heartbreak.” The book contains practical practices for releasing, healing, and transforming lives – something that Troy is used to doing as an everyday superhero, rescuing scores of people from the throes of heartbreak woes! Asked to describe the most memorable in her career thus far, when she knew that she had changed someone’s life, Troy described a divorced couple she worked with who absolutely could not be in the same room for more than five minutes without bickering. “Their anger was actually hiding their sadness. Once we dealt powerfully with their sadness, all that was left for them to say was ‘I love you, I will always love you.’ They spent the next two years re-creating their relationship as parenting partners and shared several wonderful holidays together. I was very proud of the results we were able to create. Last year, the ex-wife called to inform me that her

ex-husband recently died from a very aggressive form of cancer, but as a result of the work we all did together, she had the privilege of being by his side and holding his hand until he finally took his last breath.” If Troy can help achieve something like that, then it seems anyone who has had an ex could learn from her. To further expand the message of her powerful book, Troy wrote and directed the movie based on it – “I Really Hate My Ex,” which will be released by Lionsgate this coming April. This is not her first time working on a film, nor will it undoubtedly be her last. Troy got her start as one of the original cast of the famous PBS show, “Sesame Street,” and remained a series regular until the age of nine before moving on to numerous national commercials and movies of the week. However, after growing up in New York City with only her mother and older brother, Troy’s life changed drastically when she was placed in foster care, due to neglect, and was then sent to live with her father in Idaho, whom she barely knew. But Troy still wanted to act, so after high school, she returned to New York City to study acting and soon landed a part in Francis Ford Coppola’s movie, “The Cotton Club.” This inspired her to move to Los Angeles and pursue acting full time where she was awarded with parts in numerous movies and a role on an ABC hit soap opera. Her screenwriting debut occurred in 1997 with the movie “B*A*P*S” starring Halle Berry, and after the experience and seeing how much her script was changed during filming, Troy decided to direct and star in her next screenplay. Titled, “Let’s Talk About Sex,” Troy debuted the trailer at the Sundance Film Festival and literally stood outside handing it out to film executives. That’s called dogged determination, which paid off for Troy as the film became involved in a bidding war, and ultimately picked up by Fine Line Features. She went on to make history as the first woman of color to write and direct a studio release film, with the Warner Bros movie, “Love Don’t Co$t a Thing.” Most people have many passions but not everyone can find a way to meld them together into lucrative careers, and yet, Troy

has managed to do so with her commitment to helping people and her interest and experience in the entertainment industry. he doesn’t stop with healing broken hearts though and is on her way to achieving another amazing milestone that will assist her in continuing to help people - her Ph.D. She currently has an MA in Depth Psychology with an emphasis in Community, Liberation and Ecopsychology. Troy recently switched her field of expertise and will now be earning her doctorates degree in Jungian Analysis with and emphasis on Archetypal Studies. She tells Fitness MOST, “My intention is to work with individuals and communities that are imprisoned by their own personal demons. By using elements of the natural world such as medicine walks (walks through nature in which you allow the earth to communicate with you by way of symbols) and grounding (prolonged physical skin contact with earth elements), I am committed to empowering and inspiring.” Thus, she stays true to her brand always and persists in finding new ways to so. With all this hard work, Troy still manages to take care of her health through hiking, yoga, Pilates, and conscious – eating and not putting anything into her body she does not respect, such as sugar or hard alcohol. She tells us, “I have tremendous respect for gorgeous, green vegetables and brightly colored fruit. I am not a vegetarian, but I eat very little meat. The other thing I do every day is I ‘oil pull’…it entails placing one teaspoon of oil (I use coconut or olive oil) in your mouth and swishing it between your teeth for 15 minutes. This process extracts toxins and also leaves your teeth pearly white.” Furthermore, she does Transcendental Meditations (TM) twice a day, 20 minutes each session, and says, “When I want to be really happy I play with my two-year-old nephew, Theo. He just makes me so absolutely happy!” Well we can all be happy that Troy takes care of herself so that she can carry on helping broken-hearted, lost people find their way back to the joys that life has to offer.

At the age of 20 Nathalia Melo decided to leave law school in Brazil to explore the world around her, giving her a chance to follow her true passion of health and fitness. Although she admits facing many challenges along the way, Nathalia’s big move was worth it. After some very intense training and encouragement from her friends she began competing in fitness competitions, soon amassing accomplishments along the way such as pro fitness wins, international magazine covers, and respected fitness trainer. Her intense dedication to the sport awarded her the 2012 Bikini Olympia Champion – Ms. Melo is the first Brazilian to win this award. Nathalia talks to Most about fitness and eating advice for those trying to improve their overall health. She came up in the fitness industry quickly and shows no signs of slowing down. With an international fan base, new ebook, website, and seminars we can expect to see a lot more of Nathalia. FFM: Before we start with our questions we want to congratulate you on your upcoming wedding, will you give your diehard fans a clue on the date or at least the month? NM: Thank you very much! Exciting times for me and my fiancé; I am getting married at the end of the spring, in June, so just a few months to go. FFM: You were born in Brazil and are of Italian descent-tell us a little about your family. What does your mother think of your pictures and magazine covers? NM: My mom is awesome!! In the beginning she had a hard time understanding the industry, because for her the bodybuilding industry was just the bodybuilding division and she was a bit skeptical about it. But, after she started seeing

me in magazines and in ads for my sponsors she was super proud. She even carries some of my magazines in her car, and when people ask about me she pulls all of her magazines out and started showing them off. Hahahaha...just mom’s stuff. FFM: As a kid growing up did you ever think you would get into bodybuilding? NM: I have always been very active and sporty; however, when I was growing up in Brazil, bodybuilding was not as big as it is right now. I always knew I would be involved in health and fitness. When I got into university in Brazil, I was studying law, but I never felt like it was something I could see myself doing for the rest of my life. So, I quit law school with 4 semesters to go and moved to the US. FFM: How big is bodybuilding in Brazil? Are you currently involved in promoting the profession in Brazil? NM: Bodybuilding is growing very fast in Brazil, but I am not very familiar with how things there work. I became involved in the industry after I was living in the US, so most of my competitive and professional career experience has been in the US, and now in Europe as I have been living here for the past two years. FFM: Are you a “rock star” in Brazil? NM: Hahaha...I don’t consider myself a Rock star anywhere. But, I do have a solid fan base in Brazil, as I was the first Brazilian to ever win the Olympia, which is the biggest bodybuilding competition in the world. FFM: What do you miss about Brazil? NM: Before moving to Europe I lived in South >>>

Florida, which has a very large Brazilian community. So, if I missed Brazilian food, there were restaurants I could go to, and if I missed the music, there were places I could go dance and listen to some Brazilian music. But, since moving to Northern Ireland, I miss having Brazilian things available whenever I want. There are not many Brazilians here. As a matter of fact, I have only met one in the 2 years I have been living here. FFM: At the age of 16 you moved to Louisiana in a student exchange program for a year-tell us a little about your experience. We heard that in school you had all straight A’s-is that true? NM: Living in Louisiana was awesome. I learned a lot about American culture and made friends for life. I am still in touch with the family I lived with back then, and it is pretty cool. I am not sure about the straight A’s, but I was actually a very good student, considering I didn’t speak any English when I first moved there. So, I had to work double to be able to understand not only the subject, but also the language. FFM: After a year you went back to Brazil and started law school, what made you interested in law? Did you have time to exercise while attending law school? NM: My grandfather was a lawyer, and I have always been very fair and liked to fight for what is right. But, after a while I realized that law wasn’t my passion. I surely did have time to exercise while in law school, and if I didn’t have the time, I would make the time. Being physically active always helped my productivity in everything. FFM: At what point in your life did you decide to leave Brazil? What prompted this change? NM: The city I lived in Brazil was very small and slightly backwards, if I may add. I knew there was

a bigger world out there, and I wanted to explore it. It was a very risky decision, as I was only 20 years old at the time, but I do not regret it one bit. It made me grow as a person, as a professional, and the ups and downs taught me many things I know I wouldn’t have learned had I stayed in Brazil. FFM: When did you meet IFBB Pro Christine Wan, what influence does/did she have/had in your career? NM: I met Christine Wan at the gym where I used to train, as she worked there. She had a very significant influence in my career, as if it weren’t for her I would not had known about the different divisions in the IFBB, and she would tell me every single day, that I should sign up for a competition and that I would be very good at it. FFM: When did you sign up for your first NPC (National Physique Committee) event? NM: My first NPC Competition was in 2009. FFM: You rose very quickly in this industry and won the 2012 Ms. BIKINI OLYMPIA. How did you prepare for your competition? Is it true you follow a glutes workout? NM: Every prep is different. Your body is constantly changing, and it responds differently every time. So, it is very hard to say exactly how I prepped for the Olympia. I think that the only common denominator all preps have is a lot of determination, discipline, commitment, and hard work. These are the only things you can control, as the sport is very subjective and you are being judged by people who have different views and tastes. FFM: Once you won Ms. BIKINI OLYMPIA, did you feel that all of the training was worth it? NM: Yes!!! 100%. It was a VERY intense prep. The months leading to the Olympia, Aug and Sep are

normally the hottest months in Florida, and there were days that I would be doing high intensity workouts on the track in 100 degree weather. It was brutal, but I wouldn’t change a thing. FFM: What kind of sacrifices did you have to make to get to the competition? Were there people in your life that didn’t understand? NM: I made A LOT of sacrifices, but I made them by choice. I wanted to do well in my competitions, and I knew that I would have to change my lifestyle completely if I wanted to be in the top spot. A lot of people had a hard time understanding my lifestyle change. But, I think this lifestyle change was good in order to see who were my real friends and who were my ‘’party friends.” The real friends stood by me and were always cheering me on throughout my journey. FFM: Who was your first major sponsor? NM: My first major sponsor was a supplement company that I stayed with for 5 years. FFM: How many companies are sponsoring your programs now? NM: My main sponsors are Better Bodies and Olimp Sport Nutrition FFM: How many days a week, and how many hours a day do you spend at the gym? Are there times you struggle at maintaining your workout regimen? NM: I train 6 days a week, and spend 90 minutes on average at the gym. When I am getting ready for a competition or a photo shoot, the intensity of my training increases. A lot of times I struggle to maintain my regimen, mainly with all the traveling I do for my seminars and appearances for my >>>

sponsors. But, I really enjoy training, and it makes me feel better, so I always find a way and the time to do it. FFM: Do you have any advice for people who are having trouble sticking to an exercise routine? NM: I think the biggest problem is that people normally want overnight results when starting an exercise/nutrition routine. However, nothing happens overnight. The changes can be slow, but small changes are better than no changes. So, my advice is to keep on going and to not compare your progress to anybody else’s. FFM: Can a child be too young to start a program? NM: If they are under professional guidance, and are healthy I don’t see a problem in kids working out. FFM: Give us good practical breakfast, lunch, and dinner ideas for when you are on the run. Breakfast- Overnight oats -Before going to bed the night before, put oats, your favorite protein powder, water, Desiccated coconut (or almonds) in a container with a lid. Leave it overnight in the fridge and in the morning it will be a delicious pudding texture “on the go” breakfast. Lunch- Low Carb Tortilla Wrap with Low Sodium Canned Tuna - You can mix the Tuna with a bit of black pepper, olive oil, and Greek Yogurt. Make a wrap with Romaine Lettuce and the tuna mix. Dinner- Baked Salmon with Sweet Potato Baked Fries and peas - Season the salmon with herbs, black pepper, and salt, wrap it in tin foil, and put it in the oven for 15 minutes. Cut the sweet potatoes in slices (I always leave them in bulk already sliced in the fridge), put

it on a baking tray and sprinkle salt, black pepper, and cinnamon. Put it in the oven for 15 minutes. Put the frozen peas to boil in water for 5 minutes. Or, you can just buy the microwaveable bags. **The prep time for all this is less than 5 minutes. FFM: Any upcoming books or seminars so people can learn and follow your instructions? NM: Yes. I have been doing seminars in many places, just last year alone I did seminars and training camps in 12 different countries. BernSwitzerland, Tampa- USA, London-England and Belfast-Northern Ireland are some of the ones coming up. To stay updated on my seminar schedule you can just go to my Facebook page (/ nathaliamelofit), where I always post information about my upcoming events. I will also be launching my eBook in a month, as well as my website-stay tuned! FFM: What do you enjoy doing in your down time? NM: I am not really a “down time” type of person; I can’t sit still! But, when I have some free time I like to travel and visit different places or just stay home reading books and spending time with my fiancé, in between work email checks, haha. FFM: What is something interesting about you that most people don’t know? NM: I am always around people, and I find myself a pretty sociable person. However, I consider myself a bit of a loner, and I like to do things alone. I will even go to the movies by myself, no problem. I think it is good to enjoy your own company. FFM: Tell us about your dog, he’s a Bernese Mountain dog, right? NM: Yes!! His name is Nacho, and he is a gentle giant. He is a pure Bernese Mountain dog. His parents were show dogs, but I think he wouldn’t be too good at it as he is very clumsy! Nacho is a big >>>

boy who weights almost 100lbs and still has some growing to do. He is the life of our home. FFM: What’s your favorite movie? Book? TV series? NM: I go through phases on what type of books I read, but I will always be reading something. My favorite chick flick - ‘’Last Night at Chateau Marmont” by Lauren Weisberger Biography - ‘’I am Malala’’ Motivational - ‘’The Four Agreements’’ Don Miguel Ruiz Movie - I like movies based on real life stories, and I thought ‘’Zero Dark Thirty’’ was pretty good. FFM: Are you active with your social media? NM: Yes! I am super active on my social media, and I do it all myself, as social media is a way you have to show who you really are and what you are about. I like to have the direct connections with my fans, so I read all their posts and try to answer as many as possible. FFM: Major plans in the next 2 years? NM: Well, I think that getting married, signing with a new supplement company, and launching my eBook are already major plans! But, on top of that I am also promoting my own show ‘’Nathalia Melo Classic’’ which will take place in Dublin, Ireland in October 2015. Nathalia Melo Classic is the first International IFBB Competition in Ireland, and I am also launching my membership website in a couple of months. So, a lot of exciting news!! FMM: What was the moment when you first realized you loved photography and could make a career out of it? JP: My first gig as a photographer was anything but planned. I was actually studying and working as a journalist in college when my editor tossed a camera in my hands one night and asked if I could take some photos to go along with an article I was writing. Granted, the photos looked terrible, but I loved the new medium of how I could craft and communicate a story. I spent my time after that trying to figure out how to actually take better images. FMM: Why fitness photography? Have you always had an interest in fitness, a certain exercise, or sports? JP: Fitness photography was something that I strategically got into. At the time most of my work was photographing for lifestyle magazines and the market was suffering. One by one I watched most of my clients close their doors and go out of business. So I was forced to forecast work that I felt could sustain my career that I still loved doing. I always enjoyed sports and working with athletes – but at the time the fitness industry was extremely small. It was a bit of a gamble getting into something I just believed would grow – but grow it did. FMM: Do have a routine before every speech, or anything you feel is a must for aspiring public speakers to know in order to give a great speech? JP: I think every speaker has their own unique approach before they get up in front of an audience. Personally, I spend a lot of time practicing and rehearsing my presentation before I ever give it publicly. This way when I present I can worry less about what words I am delivering, but more so how I am delivering those words for the greatest impact.

FMM: How did you become a public speaker? When was the most nervous you ever were before a big speech? JP: Much like photography, I somewhat stumbled into public speaking opportunities. At first I was being asked to present to fellow classmates in college on how I was building my photo business or what my approach was to the projects I took on. I spent a bit of time working in marketing after college and through that I was giving a lot of presentations, or helping my co-workers create their presentations. I chartered a Toastmasters International group to better my skills as a presenter and am still a member of the organization to this date. photography, marketing and personal branding. There have of course been presentations, which made me a little nervous going into them. But once I start presenting that all goes away.

well. Years ago we worked with a local school on an internship program – but since then we haven’t really. Not because we are not interested, just haven’t had projects that interns could pop in on.

FMM: You mentioned working with a great team, how did you manage to find such great talents? Do you take any interns? JP: I truly believe that building a great team is an essential part to running a successful photography business. I’ve been very fortunate to have the chance to connect with some great professionals with fantastic on-set abilities. My lead assistant I’ve known and worked with for the better part of a decade; we typically use the same makeup artists; we just brought on a very talented production manager and have a very creative videographer as

FMM: What defines the decisive moment of your photographs? JP: I truly believe a lot of people can take great pictures. There is a bevy of viable talents in this field. That is why my team and I strive to not just take pictures, but to make pictures that work for our clients. We want to focus on what our client’s goals are and help them achieve those goals with the work we do. That goal could be to get more magazines picked up off the shelf, or to sell more of a specific product or service. We keep that in mind when we approach the creative on our shoots. >>>

FMM: What has been your most memorable moment in your career so far? JP: That is honestly a hard question to answer since I consider photography such a survival type industry. There have been so many great moments in my career – but the best moments are the ones that ensure you can continue making great pictures. So perhaps it is a project that covers your bills for the next month or so and allows you to do some personal work. Perhaps it is a personal project that fuels your creative needs for a few weeks. Whatever it is that keeps you going in the industry. FMM: What percentage of your work is fitness related, and after working in so many various capacities and fields as a photographer, do you find that fitness related work is your favorite and most interesting thus far? JP: Fitness and sports portraiture is what we specialize in so a lot of people hire us based upon that style – whether it is individuals looking to grow their portfolio, magazines looking for that style in their publication or commercial clients in that industry. Now does that mean we cannot do other work? Absolutely not-one of my best clients is an architecture company, and I work on ad campaigns for country clubs and so on. However, I believe it is important for artists to develop a style that is unique and signature to themselves and they will live and die based upon that style. There will be clients who gravitate towards the work you do and some clients that will not. That is okay; you do not need every client. The goal is to target the ones who share the same view and vision as you. FMM: Who has had the most influence on you artistically? Where do you find inspiration? JP: The great thing about inspiration is that there

are endless sources of it. I am constantly tearing out pages in magazines, following photographers on Instagram, writing down inspirations from movies I’m watching or books I’m reading. Early on in my career it was photographers like Bruce Davidson or David LaChapelle, each with a very unique approach to how they told stories through images. Today it is a variety of sports and portrait photographers – but also filmmakers and writers. FMM: Did your marketing skills develop out of your own desire to be published after you had developed your craft as a photographer? JP: I actually worked in marketing for many years while I was building up my photography business. Although working in a corporate environment is not what a lot of people desire to do but I am very fortunate I was able to have that in my journey. I learned a lot about how to develop relationships, how to pursue work, how to get repeat business and more. I was also very fortunate to have had fantastic mentors along the way from my work in marketing, to fellow photographers and even one of my former college professors who shared with me invaluable knowledge on how to successfully grow my own brand. FMM: You created the Fit Model Guide, do you have a tip you can share to our readers from the book? JP: The FitModelGuide.com e-book has a few pillars but at its core it is about developing the right relationships to earn the right to pitch and be published. That comes from spending the time up front to learn about the publications you want to work with. What are they doing presentation-wise, what are their needs, their goals and what do they find important. After that it is about demonstrating to them that you can help them achieve their goals and why you are the best choice. That is the pitch. After that comes the delivery. Not just delivering, >>>

but super delivering. Reinforcing to the client why they chose to hire you. And finally, and most importantly, it is staying in touch. A lot of professionals fail to do this – but this is where some of the best opportunities can come from. The client already expressed they are willing to work with you. Why let that wither away? FMM: You are obviously a passionate, enthusiastic individual who loves new and exciting things, so what is your next unknown road you plan to travel down or next skill or interest you will explore? JP: There are a few irons I have in the fire. The first is that myself and a few colleagues are launching a new online network for the talent and photo industry at TheProExposure.com. For the last few years it has been a podcast on how to succeed in the talent industry; but we are taking it far beyond that to include articles, videos, and additional podcasts with information. I am also involved in the planning of a new conference for the talent industry, hosting a fitness show, as well as dedicating more time this year to personal work. FMM: For your project, Year of the Shot in which you challenged yourself to take creative, new, resonating shots, do you have a favorite shot that resulted from it? Have you discovered the next way in which you will challenge yourself creatively? JP: Year of the Shot was a yearlong creative experiment I put myself through back in 2013. The idea was to undertake projects or specific photos that I had never done before and might not be able to do. Some of the projects I did went well and I was very proud of the results. Other shots

where more of a learning experience on what not to do! My favorite shot stemming from it was one I did with wine pouring into a glass against a dark backdrop. I ended up winning an award for that shot – and it was one of the first ones I did with the project. This year, although I don’t have a site dedicated to it, I am undertaking a lot more personal work to extend my creative needs. I had one not too long ago which I had two rules, the first was that I was only going to shoot film (not digital) and the second was that I was only going to use natural light and no strobes. I was so ecstatic about the results. I have one in a few days at a great location photographing a runner, one in a few weeks doing a completely different style than I normally do. I think those types of shoots are essential to staying passionate about the craft of photography. James Patrick jamespatrick.com theproexposure.com fitmodelguide.com Instagram @jpatrickphoto

Top 5 Tips for Looking Beautiful at the Gym By: Angela Lanter

Listen ladies, I get it. When you go to the gym, you want to look hot, but in a, “I didn’t try too hard” sort of way. But one of the biggest complaints I’ve heard from women is how hard it actually is to achieve that effortless “no-makeup, makeup” look. Here are a few quick tips to help you look good while sweatin’ to the oldies.

1

Less is more. No, really! A caked-on face full of

2 3

Skip the eyeliner and shadows and reach for a waterproof mascara. Raccoon eyes are not our goal here.

4

Lipstick not required. Replace lip color with a lip balm that will last throughout your workout and moisturize those lips… Shiny, moisturized lips are always in style.

5

Set your face with a setting spray to help keep things in place as best as possible. MAC Fix+ is a great product to keep everything in check.

makeup with sweat streaks is never cute. Ever. Light hands are absolutely required to achieve a simple makeup look.

Your face really only needs two products - tinted moisturizer (or, my preference, CC cream) and some concealer to touch up any problem areas. You can set with a translucent powder if need be. This is a time to let your natural beauty shine through; let’s keep that skin glowing and dewy since you’re only going to be perspiring anyways.

Six products and five minutes is really all you need to keep it cute at the gym. You’re gorgeous just the way you are, so accentuate those beautiful features and be on your way.

Why having the right workout partner can make the difference By: Jessica Jessie, MCPT

hen I was a little girl, I dribbled and juggled soccer balls all day. Ultimately that helped me earn a soccer scholarship from Virginia Commonwealth University. As a professional NFL cheerleader for the Washington Redskins, weekly weigh-ins motivated me to learn everything I could about fitness and nutrition so I could perform on the field. Now I love my job as a master personal trainer and certified nutritionist. For three years, I used my knowledge and pushed my body to the limits as I competed in the IFBB bikini division (International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness). I’m proud to say that I graced the Miss Olympia stage twice and competed in the prestigious Arnold Classic. But I couldn’t have done it without great support. My life-long partner in fitness, motivator and best friend has always been my cousin Sarah.

146 ||

FITNESS

M A G A Z I N E || APRIL / MAY 2015

Sarah, an assistant professor in kinesiology and sports psychology at James Madison University, has always kept me on the right path. Whether we are working out together or simply talking about fitness on the phone, my cousin has pushed me in the gym as much as I have pushed myself. The benefits of having a workout partner are undeniable. A Stanford University study found that even just receiving a phone call about your fitness progress once every two weeks can boost the amount of exercise you do up to 78% (on average). And that’s just with phone calls! Having a workout buddy by your side in the gym can reap even greater rewards. Here are five benefits.

1. Ready, OK! Having a workout partner by your side can be the boost you need. Just knowing that you are supposed to meet at the gym or at the park for a run adds to the level of accountability. And when you need to do one more rep or one more set it’s nice to get positive encouragement from your number one cheerleader. 2. Form is everything. When you’re exercising and pushing yourself in the gym sometimes you are going to make mistakes. That’s why having another set of eyes on your form is critical. This will help you prevent injuries and achieve the physique changes you want even faster. 3. Check your ego at the door. We all like to think that we won’t get cocky when we start seeing the results we want but it can happen to the best of us. That’s when having somebody by your side that won’t diminish your accomplishments but will push you to go further can be essential. 4. Healthy competition. It’s only natural to want to keep up with your workout partner. In fact, there

is a phenomenon called the Kohler effect, where performance gains are seen in weaker individuals who don’t want to fall behind. I know that when Sarah and I work out together our intensity is always higher. 5. The Fun Factor. Training with someone who has similar goals and dreams is fun and keeps your spirits lifted. When you see them hit a new goal or break through a plateau you can’t help but smile. Always remember that true success is being happy with what you do every day. This is a lifestyle and if it is not fun it’s probably done. Though you can get healthy and fit on your own, having somebody by your side truly can be the difference. When I’ve had bouts with motivation or confidence, my cousin Sarah has always been there for me. And hopefully I’ve helped her along the way too. To reach your fitness goals, find the right workout partner who will have fun with you, compete with you and still be your number one cheerleader. If you do, you can accomplish anything! >>>

NOURISH YOUR PASSION - Staying motivated can be challenging. Try these three strategies to keep your drive alive. • Don’t just think it, ink it. Having goals to add five pounds of lean muscle, run a 5K or increase your bench press by fifteen pounds can be motivating end points to get us moving on a more regular basis. But people can more effectively achieve these results if they focus on the work needed to help them build up to these accomplishments. Even better, the most motivated people write down these long term and weekly goals and put them where they can see them when motivation is low. • Stop and smell the roses. Because progress isn’t always linear, it can be tough to maintain motivation on those days or weeks when we have plateaued or taken a step backwards. That’s why I advise taking a look back sometimes to see how far you’ve already come. I advise my clients to take weekly pics and to relish in their accomplishments. When they see that they’ve already had success, they stay motivated to keep going. • Curb Your Enthusiasm. This may seem counterintuitive but one mistake I see over and over again is when people get caught up in a wave of motivation (i.e., New Year’s resolutions) and make really big changes before they’re ready. If you’re someone who rarely exercises, getting to the gym five days on your first week might sound like a really great goal. But you’re more likely to have quality workouts and sustain your motivation over time if you start smaller and gradually work up to this routine. So ease off the gas pedal at first. You’ll still get where you want to go. BFF Nutrition plan – Don’t forget to hold each other accountable! Meal 1: 3 egg whites, 1 whole egg 1 slice Ezekiel toast

1 small container Greek yogurt (vanilla or plain) 1 apple or pear Meal 2: 1 Quest bar Meal 3: 4 ounces of turkey 1 cup romaine lettuce with 1 tsp olive oil and 1tsp Apple cider vinegar or green veggie (green beans, broccoli, kale) Meal 4: 1 scoop protein 100 calorie nuts Meal 5: 4 ounces of chicken breast or white fish (cod, halibut, tilapia) 3 ounces of sweet potato 1 cup green veggie (green beans or broccoli) Meal 6: Fat free Jell-O with fat free whipped cream BFF Workout plan – Push each other to power through this fat blasting workout going from exercise to exercise with little to no rest. Repeat three times for the maximum benefit. 1. Switch lunges - 30 seconds 2. Squats on tire (holding hands for even deeper range of motion) - 45 seconds 3. One leg lunge off the tire - 30 seconds for each leg 4. Planks - 60 seconds 5. Roman chair (lift knees to abs) - 30 seconds 6. Plyo jumps on box - 60 seconds 7. Partner on Sled for drags – 60 seconds 8. Standing calf raises (Hold onto your partner for support) – 60 seconds >>>

PRO BODY CHEAT SHEET

Lat Pulldowns Why? Lat pulldowns are the absolute best exercise to build a strong, sexy back. You can mix things up from time to time, but don’t ever neglect one of the ultimate body shapers. Execution 1. Take an overhand grip on the bar with hands 6 inches wider than shoulder width. 2. Pull the bar down to the upper chest squeezing your lats. 3. Return the bar to the start position overhead. Tips 1. Hand spacing matters. As your hands get wider the focus shifts to the outermost section of the lats under the arm pit. This portion of the muscle creates width across your back 2. Watch your range of motion. To maximize range of motion, stretch the lats at the top position and squeeze the lats at the bottom by pulling the elbows down and back as far as possible. 3. Spotters matter – Doing lat pulldowns with a partner can not only keep your form proper but can help you push through plateaus.

EVA SIMON Eva Simon was born in Budapest, Hungary in the late 70’s to hard working middle class family. Eva discovered her passion for photography at the age of 12 but never thought of it as a career she could achieve. She had different career dreams, such as being a window dresser, makeup artist and hair stylist. At the age of 19 Eva moved to Toronto, Canada where she drifted into modeling and acting. Parallel to this glamourous occupation in 2004, Eva began her “behind the scenes” journey after developing her computer skills and Photoshop knowledge she worked as a photo retoucher and later became a makeup artist/hair stylist. In 2006, Eva’s modeling career was still at its peak when she made a decision to purchase her first professional camera and started photographing her friends. Besides doing lots of self-teaching and practice she developed her photography skills rapidly from standing in front of the camera and learning from experienced photographers. That experience a creative eye and passion for beauty brought Eva to create a photography career and a name for herself extremely fast. In 2008 Eva moved to Florida, where she became a well-known name especially in the fitness industry with her photos that are now being published internationally... “Making women look and feel gorgeous is my high”

FFM: Would you say venturing into modeling first helped get your foot in the door with photography? When did you know that photography would be your future? ES: Actually, I can say that I started taking photos first. I photographed a wedding when I was 16 years old and I asked my girlfriend to pose for me when I was 17 years old. I started modeling when I was 20 years old. FFM: Were your parents supportive in your decision to pursue a career as a photographer? ES: My mother was great about it, she actually bought me my first professional camera. My father unfortunately passed away when I was five years old, but I’m certain that he would be proud of me and like what I do. He loved photography and worked as a camera operator in the 1980s. His job was filming commercials. He also worked as a lighting technician for fashion shows at high-end events in Budapest. I actually think that I inherited my interest in photography from him. FFM: Why did you ultimately switch from modeling to photography? Were you driven by your passion, or was it more of a financial reason? ES: It was passion. I like being creative just as much, or maybe a little bit more than posing in front of the camera, even though I was very good at posing. Now I help models pose. FFM: What was the first camera you owned, and what camera do you use today? ES: My first camera was a Canon 30 D, and now I have a Canon 5D Mark III. FFM: Being that you are self-taught, if you could go back would you prefer to have taken professional classes? ES: No! Unless they were free! I am mostly self-taught. I did take some private lessons and

coaching here and there from other photographers. Thankfully I became good friends with a lot of the photographers who shot me and they gladly traded time with me and gave me lessons in return for me modeling for them. Also, I was lucky enough to be the model in some photography classes and I made sure I was paying attention. I learned a lot! Every photo shoot I have done modeling I was watching how the lighting was set up and what gear the photographers were using. I also learned a lot from YouTube, and I worked as a photographer’s assistant for three years. FFM: Do you have a preference on shooting indoors or outdoors, and if so, why? ES: I am both but I’m definitely a “Flash Photography” photographer. Even outdoors, I like to use my lighting but I am slowly transitioning into shooting natural/available lighting. FFM: You have a good bit of experience in retouching, having worked for different photographers in the past; how long did that last and what did you enjoy most about the experience? ES: Yes I did do processing and retouching for other photographers and I liked that because I am a creative person and I was able to make an image better and make a woman more beautiful. Actually, before I became a photographer I did make-up and hair for a year. I love doing makeup and hair too. Since I was a teen! I used to beautify my girlfriends all the time. But returning to the question, I did retouching altogether for probably about four years on and off. FFM: How much time would you say you spend doing post production versus time spent actually shooting? ES: This is a good question. It’s really depends on the shoot. I shoot everything in RAW so after I download my images I put them through Adobe >>>

Light Room and I make sure the job is edited down to the best shots. I adjust white balance and exposure if I have to, then the retouching comes. I spend anywhere from 10 minutes to 40 minutes on a photo I retouch. It depends on the model and what needs to be done on the image. FFM: How would you compare the retouching process in fitness photography compared to other styles, such as fashion? Do you feel you have developed your own style of retouching? ES: I think retouching for fashion would be different. Most of the time a fashion model is young and her skin is still flawless, so there is not lot to retouch on her. Some of the fitness models are a little bit older and also usually wear a spray tan, which can often take a lot of correction. I guess we can say that I developed my own style in the retouching, however I really just go by the feel, there are no rules in what I do except the basic must do’s. FFM: In your opinion what makes a photo amazing and stand out from the rest, in terms of retouching as well as the photography style? ES: In terms of retouching the more natural the better of course, unless the goal is to create something crazy. I used to over-do it a little … I made skins really plastic. In photography what’s important is great lighting, good composition, good styling and art direction, good angles, and a hot model. But all this can go to waste if the model doesn’t pose well or cannot deliver the expressions we are looking for. FFM: When did you develop your interest in fitness photography, and what inspired you the most to go in that direction? ES: I do shoot many other style not strictly fitness, but yes, fitness models and nutrition companies are my main clientele. I also shoot a lot of boudoir, glamour, beauty and fashion along with

some catalogue work. I also get hired for lots of personal portraits too like family, engagement and pregnancy sessions. But when I started shooting I wasn’t exactly sure which genre of photography I would specialize in. I was basically shooting everything and a lot of bikini and glam, until one day a famous fitness model asked me to shoot her. I have to give her credit; it was Ava Cowan. She is very big on social media and credited my work when she posted our pictures. All of a sudden I was getting inquiries to shoot from countless fitness models. Basically I was pulled into the fitness and, which I enjoy very much. FFM: What are some tips you could give our readers with aspirations of making a career out of modeling, in terms of their preparation? ES: The most important thing is to practice. Practice posing in front of the mirror, shoot with many different photographers (but the good ones, you will not learn much from beginners.) And analyze your photos to see what works and what doesn’t work. FFM: How would you recommend models to go about finding the best fitness photographers, and what are the most important things they should look for? ES: It’s just like with any other photographers, they have to look at their portfolio. Depending what the model is seeking, there are many different photographers with different styles. FFM: Has your own modeling experience helped you to pose your subjects in fitness, and how so? ES: I did have to adjust. Since I was a commercial/ bikini/fashion model I had to learn what type of posing is best when shooting a fitness model. I actually learned a lot from certain famous and experienced fitness models who I shot. >>>

FFM: Is there a specific technique you use to achieve the separation of your subject from the background? Is that something you find to be important in fitness photography? ES: I either blur the background or use “rim light” that highlights the edges of the model’s body and hair. I do it almost all the time. FFM: When did you book your first major fitness client? ES: In the summer of 2009. FFM: Do you offer workshops, seminars, or one on one classes? ES: No, but I have been thinking about doing some workshops. I think I’d have a lot to offer. FFM: What would you like to accomplish in the next five years in the fitness industry? ES: Actually, I would like to move on to other genres of photography. FFM: How big a role would you say social media plays in your marketing strategy? ES: Social media is everything! Marketing is not exactly my strength, therefore I am very grateful to Facebook and Instagram. I really never had a marketing strategy pre-social media, but my business didn’t exist yet either. ellamy is a fitness and nutrition revolutionary. With husband Kaleb by her side, the Bellamys are a physically fit team working hard at realizing the goals of their clients. Fitness Most talked to the physical trainer about transformations and the journey to creating a fit and healthier lifestyle. Mrs. Bellamy, wife and a mother of two, hails from Northern British Columbia in Canada. In her early years, she led an unhealthy lifestyle. Caitlyn was a smoker who never exercised, had poor eating habits, and was underweight. After watching her mother compete in a fitness show at the age of 49, she made a plan to follow in her footsteps and get healthy. The transformation process was not an easy one. Unlike most people, Caitlyn didn’t have to lose weight; she was skinny with very little muscle mass. “I am what they call a ‘hard gainer’ in the fitness industry.” Adding muscle to her tall frame would be a slow process. “I wanted to look like the women in the fitness magazines I was reading,” recognizing that they had been training for years. Patience is extremely important, “I wasn’t going to achieve my dream physique in a few months of training.” The Bellamys started Revolutionary Fitness & Nutrition Consulting, being passionate about health, fitness, and spreading the word of how good nutrition and exercise can improve your quality of life. They offer one-on-one personal training, nutritional consulting, contest preparation packages, pose classes, as well as online training.

We discussed Caitlyn’s one-on-one training and her unique approach to getting fit. Her energy and passion for fitness and positive attitude is contagious. Those individuals who train with her get to experience that first-hand. “I push my clients in the gym to make sure they are getting out of their comfort zone, but I like to think I make it fun, so the pain is a bit more bearable.” Most of her personal training clients have been with her for years. Chanelle Young, one of Caitlyn’s clients, credits the fitness expert with “helping [her] to transform in more ways than just losing weight. She has helped [her] change [her] lifestyle for the better.” As a personal trainer, there is nothing more gratifying than seeing a client achieve their goals. “I think a lot of the time I am more excited than my clients are to see their progress.” Helping people feel better about themselves and gain more confidence is the most rewarding feeling. Often people are apprehensive about getting fit, as the goal often seems unattainable. Caitlyn cannot stress enough the importance of patience. “It has taken me seven years to get where I am today, the slower the process, the better chance they have of making this a lifestyle and not just a short-term quick fix.” She tells her clients that are trying to lose weight, “this is not a weight loss reality show, and you are not going to lose 10 pounds in one week.” Those people are training five to eight hours a day and are on very calorierestricted diets. The fitness expert assures us that losing one to two pounds a week is a more realistic and healthy goal.

When taking the first steps to physical fitness, Caitlyn encourages hiring a personal trainer. There is so much fitness advice out there, that many people are confused about which route will help reach their goals. “Talk to a qualified fitness expert who can help you design a personalized program for your needs and goals.” The journey to fitness can be difficult to maintain, so we asked Caitlyn how she stays strong and navigates cheat days. “I always tell myself, ‘I am the one who wants to do this, I choose this lifestyle.’” In regard to cheat days, the personal trainer is quick to correct: “No cheat days, but I do have a treat once in a while.” She never plans her cheat days because most the time, she will not have a craving, and it’s unproductive to force herself to eat unhealthily. She bakes cookies with her daughter and may indulge with a cookie or have a glass of wine with her husband. In addition to personal training, Caitlyn models and participates in fitness shows. Having always been a competitive person, she initially competed to win. Now, the fitness model competes to see how much she can better herself with each show. “Each year my physique progresses, and it is exciting to see the changes knowing that I can bring a better package to the stage with each show.” It’s what keeps her motivated to return to a competition year after year. While fitness is an important part of getting healthy, nutrition is just as vital. “Very low-calorie diets are a bad road that you do not want to take.” You will more than likely feel deprived and then binge, which is a vicious never-ending cycle. The personal trainer makes sure that her clients have a healthy balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fats in their nutrition plans, and teaches them how

to incorporate treats into their diets. “I don’t eat ‘clean’ 100% of the time, so I don’t expect my clients to either. If you eat well [nutritious, whole foods] 90% of the time, having a few indulgences each week is not going to ruin your progress.” Sounds like a program we can get behind! The fitness expert has signed with Magnum Nutraceutical. Magnum is dedicated to integrity in producing the highest quality of sports supplements on the market. They guarantee that all their products are made with 100% pharmaceutical grade ingredients and that their products are far more effective in a much shorter period. Caitlyn is currently using Hi5, 100% fermented amino acids, Opus, which is a stimulant free pre-workout/BCAA blend, and Rocket Science, their pre-workout performance intensifier. Her favorite, Quattro, is a lactose and gluten-free fourstage isolate protein blend that now comes in three different flavors. In addition to Magnum, Caitlyn is also sponsored by FITT4U Designs by Lynn Kingston. “Lynn is such a talented lady and it is always such an honor to wear her creations. She puts in the effort to ensure you are 100% satisfied with your suit.” The personal trainer believes that Lynn is one of the best suit designers out there.

copy-cats that the last thing I want to do is have her growing up thinking she has to be skinny or lean to be accepted.” Caitlyn tries to set an example so that her children will be confident, no matter what body shape they have. The Bellamys are a fit family and both kids enjoy eating healthy and being active. “As a family we walk the dog or play at the park, which is a great way to get in a little extra cardio,” says Caitlyn. They always try to make fitness more fun and enjoyable for the whole family. “We are offering a lifestyle, not a quick fix.” Caitlyn is adamant about one thing: “Stop comparing yourself to others,” which is exactly what she used to do when she first started. “When you are constantly surrounded by fit, beautiful women it is hard not to think, ‘Oh I wish I had her legs,’ or ‘Why can’t I be as muscular as her?’ You need to focus on your own progress. Your progress is all that matters.” Caitlyn Bellamy has helped hundreds of men and women change their lifestyle and reach their fitness-related goals. For her, there is no better feeling than knowing she has made a difference in someone’s life.

When discussing motherhood and body image, the personal trainer is cautious, particularly with her daughter. “I have become a lot more careful about saying negative things about my body in front of her. Children can be such little

CRYSTAL MILANA “A lifetime practice,” is how yoga instructor Crystal Milana describes what yoga means to her. A certified instructor at Sid Yoga Center in Towson, MD, Crystal’s passion, energy, and dedication to yoga impacts her students and those around her, inspiring people to gain and experience all of the benefits that yoga delivers. She believes that through yoga, “You learn to connect to your mind, body, and spirit, and how you can find peace within each of them. You learn the power of focused breath and being able to focus your mind. You also learn how to have a deeper connection to God or the universe through yoga.”

Like many people, Crystal’s first introduction to yoga started with a desire to add variety to her workouts and increase her flexibility. However, she soon discovered how amazing she felt after each class and loved the challenge of the postures and the friendly, family atmosphere. After seeing what a positive impact yoga had on her life, Crystal wanted to share that with others and get more of her friends involved. Thus, her motivation to become an instructor was born after about four years into her practice. “I fell more in love with yoga and the lifestyle of yoga more than ever before and that is when I realized it was my calling in life.” Crystal did her 500 hour Teacher Training

at Sid Yoga Center, and she revealed that for her the training was not difficult, as she enjoyed each moment of the training process. “I was actually a little sad after I had completed the last part because I loved being at the studio all day long, and I would learn so much each week that I was there. I felt like I could not get enough of it. I have an amazing mentor though and continue to learn from him all of the time. Before becoming an instructor, Crystal was an actress and model for ten years and still does some shoots. Thus, she has even more incentive to maintain her fit and healthy body. She does this through yoga obviously, but also through running

and eating healthy with a balanced approach to food, saying she loves to cook fresh meals at home and also to go out to eat where she gets her best cooking ideas from. Yet she does have a weakness for sweets, but knows that deprivation altogether is not the key, but rather limits herself to how much she has. As far as yoga goes, her favorite form for herself that she enjoys is Vinyasa, as she likes the flow from posture to posture. Crystal also loves to go for a morning run as a nice counterpart to yoga, telling us, “When I run is when I plan my day, come up with ideas, and just enjoy another way of being outside. It is a perfect balance to my yoga practice because >>>

when I run my head is filled with thoughts, I allow myself to totally zone out, and when I practice I allow myself to clear out the thoughts and become present in my body and in the space that I am in that moment.” s an animal and nature lover, who grew up in a beautiful part of Maryland right on the Chesapeake Bay, Crystal feels most at home and at peace connected to all of God’s creation when she is outside, especially practicing yoga by the water or in the early hours of the morning. “I have always been a morning person; there is something magical to me about the morning hours.” She divulges that yoga has overall made her feel even more connected to nature. She says that, “I now feel like it is my service to help protect what God has given to us here on earth. Yoga has helped me to understand oneness and how we are connected to every living thing. From a person to our oceans, a tree, a bird or a bee; we are all connected through God.” It is this connection that continually drives her commitment to make a difference, saying she desires to bring, “more peace into the world through connection-people connecting to themselves, people connecting to others and people connecting with nature.” Not only is she achieving this already by her classes and inspiring others to join the yoga lifestyle, but she is also devoted to bringing more awareness to protecting our waters through yoga, with the establishment of her foundation, Yoga to Save the Bay, that kicks off this spring. It will be to help protect the

Chesapeake Bay through clean up days in return for a free yoga class outside by the Bay and donation classes that will go to local non-profits that protect the Bay. Crystal’s compassion and positive attitude can teach us all a thing or two about giving back to our communities and being the best person we can be. Fortunately for us, Crystal can be seen here at Fitness MOST as a regular contributor, with a monthly column giving us advice and lessons in life from the perspectives of a yogi. One tidbit of advice she offers for beginners is, “There are so many different types of yoga; there is a type of yoga for everyone. Find the type of yoga that works best for you and remember that yoga is called practice because it is a constant practice not perfection. Let go of any judgments on yourself and be patient with learning the postures.”

Dr. BRANDY SEGURA It is said that “you choose your path in life” and that “you control your own happiness.” I’ve never believed these sayings more than I do now. However, a few years ago, I still

thought that I was stuck with the body that genetics gave me, which I was unhappy with. When I left my job as a physician I thought that I had left my one true path and passion in life and would never find that again. I had the mentality that I had to accept my life as it was and learn to be happy with what I had. Most people get stuck in this state and never find a way to escape. Luckily, I realized that I was wrong and took charge of creating the change I wanted to see in my life. I have read many transformation and success stories but the one below is the first one I’ve ever gotten to write. “I am a 36 year old mother of two and former Medical Doctor. I am currently a national bikini competitor, NASM CPT, online trainer, and am a sponsored athlete with Prime Nutrition, Natural Grade Nutrition, and B-Up Bars. I’m also an affiliate athlete with Six Pack Bags and Bodybuilding.com. I am a contributing writer for Bodybuilding.com, sportsnutritionsupplementguide.com, and also blog for Prime Nutrition.com. I have been featured on bodybuilding.com, Muscle & Fitness Hers, RxMuscle.com, Quest Nutrition Blog and in Muscle & Fitness Hers magazine. I am happy with these accomplishments, but I am looking to become even more involved in the fitness industry. I see every opportunity as a way to help inspire others and to try to reach out to those who may be in the situation I was in a couple of years ago.” That story may be pretty similar to what most fitness competitors write but the reason why it’s a success story is because of the story that it was

preceded by. Rewind to eight years ago, I was a surgery intern working 80+ hours a week, surviving on hospital cafeteria food with sky high cortisol levels and zero interest or energy to exercise. I began to gain weight easily and couple that with two pregnancies nine months apart, I weighed my heaviest at 175lbs on a 5’5” frame. I quit practicing medicine in order to care for my children and had some regrets about the decision to leave my passion in life forever. For an overachiever like myself, no goal to work for is quite frankly depressing. I became very unhappy and settled into just being an overweight mother. he turning point in my story and the catalyst for me beginning my fitness journey happened when I picked up a Muscle and Fitness HERS magazine and saw pictures of the competitors in the back pages. I had no idea that the fitness industry and competitions existed. I saw several stories of women and mothers who had made amazing physical transformations and began to compete in fitness competitions. I decided right then and there that I was done being overweight and unhappy and set a goal of competing in a bikini competition within one year. As a driven, goal-oriented person, I saw this as a challenge for me, and one that I was determined to do. I created a Facebook page and announced my goal to friends and family so that I could both inspire them to take the journey with me and to keep myself accountable. I began reading as much as I could about eating healthy and the proper diet and training to lose weight and build muscle. Four months later, I competed at the NPC Natural Pennsylvania and won second place in my height class. I was hooked! I am now a National level competitor and am competing to earn my Pro card. While I am determined to go the farthest I can in this sport, >>>

it has become so much more to me than just winning and trophies. I have learned a new way of living that has been carried over to my family. My husband and I now actually enjoy clean eating and being on a meal plan! We train together every morning and are teaching our kids the importance of being a healthy and fit person. In addition, as a personal trainer I have the privilege of changing the lives of people who were once in my situation. Showing them the correct way to train, pushing them beyond their limits, and being a source of motivation, inspiration, and most often, advice, I have found a new purpose in life and one that fulfills some of the reasons why I became a physician. I am excited to train every day and change the lives of those around me. Due to my background in medicine and a newly found love and talent for writing, I have discovered additional success and a new opportunity for my

skills. I am happy and enjoying a path in life that I never imagined. Every day is a new day for more opportunities and to be involved with the creation of a life that I never saw possible. ow that I have transformed my life, it is my goal to help those around me and to be a source of inspiration as well as information. I want to share my journey and transformation with the world and to show people what is possible. I truly believe that it is never too late to change and to be what you want to be. You have the ability to create your own path in life and to control your success and happiness. I have come to realize that no success or failure defines me, no man or woman can make or break me, and my age does not limit me. I am who and what I choose to be.

Have you heard of yoga paddle boarding, or under water spin classes? Maybe you have heard of trampoline workouts or aerial yoga. The first thought that usually comes to mind when researching these classes and fitness trends is, do they really work and how expensive are they? This column will explore fitness trends that may be slightly off the beaten path. She will look at the fitness fundamentals involved in the workout and if it is advertised accurately.

DYNAMIC IMPACTS WITH DORSEY OST Fitness is proud to have Associate Editor Charles Dorsey, Jr as a regular con-tributor. His column, Dynamic Impacts with Dorsey will take a detailed look at personal training, fine motor skills and aerobic conditioning to help challenge readers to perform, look and feel their very best. Dynamic Impacts with Dynamics will feature tips in relation to nutrition, weight loss, proper lifting technique, and form. It also utilizes techniques to workout with limited equipment and time based on information obtained from experts in the fitness and medical fields. Charles will dispel preconceived weight loss strategies while offering unique approaches to popular techniques. Additionally, Charles will take an in-depth look at fitness technology and explore its effectiveness. Together with tips and tricks, Charles will highlight success stories and transformations from people of all fitness and professional backgrounds. Charles attended Liberty University (LU), where he played football for four years and earned his BS in Business Management. Charles’ interest in bodybuilding started at LU after he won his first bodybuilding contest on campus, Mr. Liberty 1990 and 1991. While attending LU, Charles studied bodybuilding and nutrition from some of the best mentors in the sport, health, and fitness industries. Charles went on to become an accomplished bodybuilder, locally and nationally. Charles is also a Long standing Judge on the Na-tional Physique Committee (NPC).

With his 20+ years of experience in the health and fitness industry, Charles has earned the respect of fellow competitors, trainers and clients alike. With more than 15 years of quality Certified Personal Training, Charles is excited to bring his philosophy based on proper technique, motivation and dedication to helping clients surpass their goals. Charles is the owner of Dynamic Fitness, a personal training studio located in the United States. After Charles had won his first national bodybuilding competition, his Mother’s compliment was “You looked dynamic!” The description has stuck. His mom continues to be his most loyal fan and Charles continues to be her favorite son (ok so he is the on-ly boy among five sisters). His mother’s inspiration has motivated Charles to dedicating his life to helping others achieve their best. He accomplishes this by offering guidance and knowledge at several posing seminars and clinics. Charles and his Dynamic Train-ers make it their mission to help clients surpass their goals and lead a healthier lifestyle.
