We all long for the thrill of flight, what could be more exciting than the crackling whine of a piston engine? A biplane shifts and sways and slides through the wind as its wooden propellor pulls it forward through the sky, less a magestic albetross than an angry bee. Nimble, and sometimes graceful, but fighting against the pull of the earth, remaining aloft only through the furious batting of it’s seemingly insufficient wings. Sometimes you outgrow the life that you’ve been handed and only the furious beating of wings will propel you fast enough to break free. Scott

Amelia Earhart Amelia Mary Earhart, fille de Samuel “Edwin” Stanton Earhart (1868-1940) et d’Amelia “Amy” Otis Earhart (1869–1962), est née à Atchison, Kansas, dans la maison de son grand-père maternel, Alfred Gideon Otis (1827-1912). En 1920, un baptême de l’air lui donna la passion pour le vol. Elle devint apprentie infirmière puis assistante sociale et se paya des leçons de pilotage, économisant assez d’argent pour s’acheter un biplan jaune vif, Le Canary. Le 22 octobre 1922, Earhart atteignit l’altitude de 4300 m, record pour une aviatrice à cette époque. En 1928, elle acquit une notoriété phénoménale en traversant l’Atlantique avec deux compagnons de vol. À l’âge de 34 ans, le matin du 20 mai 1932, Earhart partit de Harbour Grace dans la province de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador. Après ce vol en solo d’une durée de 14 heures et 56 minutes, elle se posa dans un pré à Culmore, au nord de Derry, en Irlande du Nord : elle devint la première femme à traverser seule l’océan Atlantique en avion. Hilary Swank l’a incarnée en 2009 au cinéma, dans le film de Mira Nair, Amelia. En 1994, un téléfilm a été réalisé sous le titre Amelia Earhart, le dernier vol avec Diane Keaton dans le rôle d’Amelia. Amy Adams incarne Amelia Earhart dans La Nuit au musée 2. Sharon Lawrence l’incarne dans le premier épisode de la deuxième saison de Star Trek : Voyager.

Le mythe Les premiers pilotes d’avion étaient considérés comme des dieux. Ceux de la Pan Am faisaient tomber les filles. Mais l’un des premiers à s’envoler n’a pas eu autant de chance. Dans la mythologie grecque, Icare se brûla les ailes à trop se rapprocher du soleil. Pas de chance. Abbas Ibn Firnas, 880 apr. J.-C. est le 1er homme volant. À 70 ans il crée des ailes en bois recouvertes de soie et garnies de plumes. Il se lance depuis une tour de Cordoue, et même s’il se fracture deux côtes lors de l’atterrissage, il resta quelques instants à planer dans les airs. Vers 1500 apr. J.-C., Léonard De Vinci s’évertuait à inventer des machines volantes en s’inspirant du vol des insectes et des oiseaux. On retiendra l’hélicoptère et sa machine volante. En 1783, les frères Montgolfier sont les 1ers à rester dans les airs grâce au ballon à air chaud. Clément Ader, s’est autoproclamé 1er homme ayant volé dans un avion motorisé.

Le vécu L’aéroport de Beauvais-Tillé fut construit durant les années 1930. Amélioré par les allemands pendant la guerre, il a aussi servi aux Alliés à la fin du conflit. En 1956, il s’ouvre au trafic commercial et devient le 3ème aéroport de Paris. L’aéroclub de Beauvais-Tillé a été créé le 6 juillet 1979 par trois passionnés. La flotte de départ était constituée de deux avions : Rallye, Cessna 150.

Planes Boeing Stearman A75N1 / n° série : 75361 Version PT17 à moteur Continental W-670 de 220cv / Hélice bois Sensenich Envergure : 9,81 m / longueur : 7,39 m Vitesse maximale : 180 km/h Ce biplan servit de formation aux futurs pilotes de l’U.S. Army et de l’U.S. Navy dans les années 30. Voltige et vol sans visibilité, tout ou presque lui était permis. Une taille imposante et un train d’atterrissage à toute épreuve. Le boeing Stearman A75N1 est un avion qui aime se faire remarquer au sol comme dans les airs. Des couleurs éclatantes, jaune et rouge. Il a toutes les qualités et surtout les défauts pour former les meilleurs. Après la fin de la guerre, des milliers d’avions sont vendus sur le marché civil.

Lui vole vers l’Amérique latine. Il est retrouvé au Nicaragua dans les années 50/60. Criblé de balles, on dit qu’il a participé aux guérillas. Rapatrié en Europe, il n’est plus que l’ombre de lui même. De 1992 à 1995 il est totalement reconstruit par Philippe Ciepiela, un passionné. Il retrouve ses couleurs et son allure d’antan.

P 52/53 - Amelia Mary Earhart, daughter of Samuel “Edwin” Stanton Earhart (1868-1940) and Amelia “Amy” Otis Earhart (1869–1962), was born in Atchison, Kansas, in the house of Alfred Gideon Otis (1827-1912), her maternal grandfather. In 1920, her first flight inspired her passion for flying. She became an apprentice nurse and social worker and paid for flying lessons, saving enough money to buy herself a bright yellow bi-plane, which she called the Canary. On 22nd October 1922, Earhart reached the altitude of 4300m, a record for airwoman at the time. In 1928, she became hugely famous by crossing the Atlantic with two co-pilots. At the age of 34, on the morning of 20th May 1932, Earhart took off from Harbor Grace in Newfoundland. After a solo flight of 14 hours and 56 minutes she landed in a field in Culmore, North of Derry in Northern Ireland: she became the first woman to complete a solo transatlantic flight. Amelia everywhere and forever. Hilary Swank portrayed her 2009 in the Mira Nair movie, Amelia. In 1994, a television film called Amelia Earhart, the Final Flight with Diane Keaton in the role of Amelia. Amy Adams plays Amelia Earhart in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. Sharon Lawrence portrays her in the first episode of Season 2 of Star Trek: Voyager.
