Hell yeah ...been getting some miles on! Where were you? Submit those pics! Been caught in a few brutal storms, couple minor repairs, snapped a belt, hung with the family, met a few new folks, joked, smoked, ate, drank, BBQ’ed, tattooed, backyards, barnyards even a corn field and a whole lotta road connecting them. eroism is a word that is sometimes tossed around too lightly. When we attach the label “heroic” to everyday actions and activities we water the word down and we take something away from true heroes. On the other hand, real “heroes” are often the first to deny that they are, and who are often a little bemused by the attention given to them for actions that they see as “Hey, anyone would have done the same thing in my shoes.” But to me, that last is the key to the question of what is and is not heroic – the “in my shoes” part. Many of us would never learn the answer to “what would you have done” because we would never have donned those shoes to begin with. That, to me, is a clear distinction between the everyday and the heroic. Yesterday I stood at the funeral for U.S. Army Sgt. Louis Fastuca, of West Chester Pa., killed on July 5th when the enemy attacked the vehicle he was in. Sgt. Fastuca is a hero – not because he died – everyone dies – but because he raised his hand and took an oath and donned a uniform for a duty that is inherently dangerous. In other words, he knew that if he put on these shoes it could cost him his life, ...but he put them on anyway.

Politics Biker Style By Charles Umbenhauer

While the calendar says it is August and this riding season has been a hot one that has offered numerous events for bikers to choose from, I am going to ask you to flip the calendar to September and draw a circle around September 25. That is the date that we will be celebrating the tenth anniversary of the “Ride to Gettysburg.” As the ABATE lobbyist I spend most of my time cooped up at the state capitol or in my office in front of a computer screen. Unfortunately, I miss a lot of events but the Ride to Gettysburg is one that I always look forward to and have enjoyed watching it grow over the years. There were a few that due to weather became a real challenge but they all happened and enjoyed a great deal of success both from the standpoint of participation and raising funds for the Gettysburg Monuments project.

Registration begins at 11:00 AM and the ride leaves promptly at 1:00 PM. Donation is still only $10 per rider. Can’t beat that. Each year it seems that we are joined by more State Legislators and more riding groups and various clubs. Like I said, everyone is welcome. If you find yourself somewhere in the middle of the pack during the ride you won’t be able to see the beginning or the end of the procession. It stretches out for a mile or two. It is always an impressive sight with the God Bless America Color Guard leading the parade and the police escort from beginning to end of the ride. Kids are always welcome, in fact we encourage you to ride your children and then after the ride take your own tour of the battlefield. Hope to see many of you on the ride this year. www.abatepa.org

While ABATE of PA has sponsored the ride it is open to anyone who wants to join in and have an afternoon of good riding, meeting new friends and old and collecting one of the free Readshaw Raiders pins compliments of Comcast. The ride kicks off from Commonwealth Avenue that is located behind the Capitol in Harrisburg and proceeds straight down Route 15 to Battlefield Harley Davidson in Gettysburg where everyone is treated to a chicken dinner and entertainment. R.I.P. Dennis Lee Hopper (May 17, 1936 – May 29, 2010)

Dennis Hopper, Actor and Iconoclast, Dies By THE NEW YORK TIMES Dennis Hopper, in the film “Easy Rider,” which he directed, edited and starred in. Dennis Hopper, whose portrayals of drugaddled, often deranged misfits in the landmark films “Easy Rider,” “Apocalypse Now” and “Blue Velvet” drew on his early out-ofcontrol experiences as part of a new generation of Hollywood rebel, died at his home in Venice, Calif., He was 74. According to the Times obituary written by Edward Wyatt, Mr. Hopper died from complications of prostate cancer. His death was first reported by Reuters. Mr. Hopper, who said he stopped drinking and using drugs in the mid-1980s, followed that change with a tireless phase of his career in which he claimed to have turned down no parts. His credits include at least six films released in 2008 and at least 25 over the past 10 years. Most recently, Mr. Hopper starred in the television series “Crash,” an adaptation of the Oscar-winning film of the same title. Produced for the Starz cable channel, the show had Mr. Hopper portraying a music producer unhinged by years of drug use. During a promotional tour last fall for that series, he fell ill; shortly thereafter, he began a new round of treatments for prostate cancer, which he said was first diagnosed a decade ago. Inverting a famous line of dialogue spoken by Peter Fonda in “Easy Rider,” Manohla Dargis wrote of Mr. Hopper in The New York Times: Dennis Hopper — actor, filmmaker, photographer, art collector, world-class burn Page 8

out, first-rate survivor — never blew it. Unlike the villains and freaks he has played over the decades — the psycho with the mommy complex in “Blue Velvet,” the mad bomber with the grudge in “Speed” — he has made it through the good, the bad and some spectacularly terrible times. He rode out the golden age of Hollywood by roaring into a new movie era with “Easy Rider.” He hung out with James Dean, played Elizabeth Taylor’s son, acted for Quentin Tarantino. He has been rich and infamous, lost and found, the next big thing, the last man standing.

Learn to Play Winning Blackjack #101

For those who are not aware, the State of Pennsylvania will soon be offering table games at their Casino’s. One of the most popular table games at Casinos today is BlackJack. Although it seems to be a simple game, it is not. The house has the mathematical edge and you need to known how to approach each hand to even the odds. To help those of you who are looking forward to the table games to learn the skills and tricks of the trade,we will be featuring one article each month dealing with a different part of the game. Stay with it and in no time you’ll be playing like a PRO. For past articles contact Blackjack101@FLBPA.com

Part 2 Buying Chips Once you are seated at a table, you’ll need to purchase some chips from the dealer for your bets. Wait for a break in the action, and place your cash out in front of you on the table felt. (Some casinos offer no mid-shoe entry, so you might have to wait until the dealer shuffles to join the game.) An appropriate buy-in amount is anywhere from 10 to 20 times your average bet. If you are a $5 bettor, this means a buy-in of $50-$100 is typical. Don’t try to hand your cash to the dealer. For security reasons, he can’t take anything from your hands. Simply lay the cash on the table; he’ll pick it up and change it for an equal value of playing chips. You won’t be getting any change back either. He’ll change the entire amount, push the chips across the table to you, and then drop the cash into a slot in the table top. Chip colors are fairly standardized in the casino industry, with red chips representing $5, green chips representing $25, and black chips representing $100. You’ll also see $1 value chips (usually white) or $1 tokens (silver) on the table as well. Some casinos also use a $2.50 chip that is usually pink in color. Chip colors above the $100 denomination vary widely, with purple a common choice for $500 chips. Take a quick look at the chips to make sure that you know the values, and that you were given the correct amount for your cash. If you have any questions, just ask the dealer. Part of his job is to help players learn the game.

you. Once the hand is over, the dealer will move around the table to each position in turn, paying winners and collecting the chips from losing hands. After the dealer has paid you, you can remove your chips from the circle, and place your next bet. If you want to let your winnings ride, you’ll need to form one stack of chips from the two or more stacks on the table after the dealer pays you. Remember, big chips should be placed on the bottom. Cashing In When you’re finished playing, you’ll want to take your chips to the cashier to exchange them for cash. If you have groups of smaller denomination chips in front of you, the dealer will probably want you to “color up” your chips. This simply means exchanging groups of smaller denomination chips for larger valued chips. Wait until the end of a hand, then simply push your chips out in front of you between the betting boxes, so it can’t be confused for a bet. The dealer will count down the chips, and return to you a smaller stack of chips of equal value. You can take these to the cashier for cash, or to another table. Premise of the Game The basic premise of the game is that you want to have a hand value that is closer to 21 than that of the dealer, without going over 21. Other players at the table are of no concern. Your hand is strictly played out against the hand of the dealer. The rules of play for the dealer are strictly dictated, leaving no decisions up to the dealer. Therefore, there is not a problem with the dealer or any of the other players at the table seeing the cards in your hand. Indeed, if you’re playing at a shoe game, the player cards are all dealt face up. In any event, when you’re just learning to play, don’t hesitate to show the dealer or other players your cards and ask questions.

Making a Bet On the table felt in front of your position, you’ll find a circle or box for your bets. Before each hand begins, place your desired bet into the circle in one stack. Once the cards are dealt, you aren’t allowed to touch the bet in the circle. If you are betting multiple denominations of chips, place the larger valued chips on the bottom of the stack, and the smaller value chips on top. Once the cards have been dealt, you aren’t allowed to touch the bet in the circle. Next month If you need to know how much you have bet Values of the Cards for doubling or splitting (explained later), ask • the dealer they will count down the chips for FLBPA.com / August 2010

All jokes are submitted by our readers. We dont know where they came from or who wrote them. Just enjoy!!!

The Value of a Drink ‘Sometimes when I reflect back on all the wine I drink I feel shame. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the vineyards and all of their hopes and dreams . If I didn’t drink this wine, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, ‘It is better that I drink this wine and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver.’ ~ Jack Handy WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may leave you wondering what the hell happened to your bra and panties. ~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ‘I feel sorry for people who don’t drink. When they wake up in the morning, that’s as good as they’re going to feel all day. ‘ ~Frank Sinatra WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may create the illusion that you are tougher, smarter, faster and better looking than most people. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ‘When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.’ ~ Henny Youngman WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may lead you to think people are laughing WITH you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ‘24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not..’ ~ Stephen Wright WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may cause you to think you can sing. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ‘When we drink, we get drunk. When we get drunk, we fall asleep. When we fall asleep, we commit no sin. When we commit no sin, we go to heaven. So, let’s all get drunk and go to heaven!’ ~ Brian O’Rourke WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may cause pregnancy. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ‘Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.’ ~ Benjamin Franklin Page 18

WARNING: The consumption of alcoh ol is a major factor in dancing like a retard. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ‘Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.’ ~ Dave Barry WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may cause you to tell your friends over and ov er again that you love them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To some it’s a six-pack, to me it’s a Support Group. Salvation in a can! ~ Dave Howell WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may make you think you can logically converse with members of the opposite sex without spitting. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And saving the best for last, as explained by Cliff Clavin, of Cheers. One afternoon at Cheers, Cliff Clavin was explaining the Buffalo Theory to his buddy Norm. Here’s how it went: ‘Well ya see, Norm, it’s like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That’s why you always feel smarter after a few beers.’ WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may make you think you are whispering when you are not P.S. L.I has sponsored this message to inform you that we have 3 drink specials a week. See you there!

Where Were You?

Perkiomen Chapter AMCA PERKIOMEN CHAPTER AMCA 2010 National Meet 2010 NATIONAL MEET Oley, Pennsylvania . April 23rd - 25th, 2010 words, ridin’ and pix by lutz

Crockers! Indians! Vincents! and Harley Davidsons! Ohh my!! Every April the Perkiomen Chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America host their National Meet at the Oley Pennsylvania Fairgrounds near Reading Pennsylvania. A nation wide club with thousands of members (maybe an understatment!) that enjoy ridin, restoration and ownership of some real cool old and sometimes rare motorcyles. This event in Oley is one of the many events similarly done by different chapters thoughout the United States that bring members out in droves. This year’s antique motorcycle show featured the Crocket Motorcyle and the cool part was that these are not just museum peices but daily riders, too. Sitting back and taking in all the scenes and listening to the talk from those attending you know all involved in the club are very passionate about their love of motorcycles. lookin for that special part from OEM, aftermarket or right off the barn floor! You’ll probably find it here. Bring you wallet as some things are not cheap but well worth it when you find that one particular thing you’ve been looking for for years! People camping out, talkin about upcoming meets (like Rhinebeck), ridin around on some cool iron, it definetly takes you back. Maybe take a ride through the Pennsylvania Dutch Country, grab some food and something to drink at the food corrall and rest a bit because there’s lots of walking here to catch in the many vendors and members selling parts. Almost too much stuff to do in one day, that’s why many stay all 3 days. Next year take a walk through time and check it out... Now, where did I see those shovelhead cases....................

July & Aug MOOD OF THE MOMENT. I have never seen planets in this configuration before. 7 out of 10 ‘planets’ are involved. The forces that make things happen are in a tug-of-war with each other during this time. Push and pull between Jump and Hold On with a grinding power to Break and Give Birth. Out with the Old and in with the New. It is a kind of Birth happening. Something big and extreme is happening. The world may feel it as an economic collapse or string of natural disasters. It is significant. Something new is coming and the meaning of it will be understood only after it is Here. ARIES. Uranus and Jupiter both moving into Aries now. Uranus is an 84 year cycle and it will be in Aries for the next 7 years. Expected the unexpected. Incredible urge for freedom and individuality. The old and routine bore you now. Jobs and relationships seem like a burden. You have this electric restless feeling that you have to break out of the rut and do something new. Nothing has to be wrong with the old. You just need something new. If you do not break out, you will feel depressed. If you do, then others who need you will feel depressed. What to do.

TAURUS. There is more to heaven and earth than meets the eye. This is not a time to be so grounded in the material world. Physicists can only find 4% of physical matter. 96% is unseen and unfound. This is a time for you to go for the 96% where reality is. Channels are opening up inside you now for other forms of consciousness and psychic abilities. Clairvoyance and seeing the human aura are possible abilities for you now. Not your normal way of same same in the world, but these are not normal times. GEMINI. You have had a tendency to make a friend with everybody, but now is a time to pick and choose. Look for the people and groups that are into consciousness-raising. Look for the people who are strange, unusual, extraordinary in some way. They stand out in a crowd and somehow seem like they don’t fit. Make a friend with these people, but don’t expect the normal emotional bonding from them that you would with others. They come and go. In this you will find that expanding awareness that you have been looking for. CANCER. Happy Birthday Beloved. Nothing stable outside you now. Everything in an uproar. Change, change, change. Forget about security for awhile as an individual. Band together. Be with family, tribe, or commune. Meet the people in your neighborhood. Form a cooperative with common interests and common goals. Share your resources. All For One and One For All. The energies may not affect you personally, but the people around you will. One thing about you that never changes is that you feel what others feel and what happens to them, happens to you also. LEO. Happy Birthday Beloved. What happens now gives you a new view on things, a new meaning to life, a new consciousness to be aware in a new way. It is a time of awakening. Absolutely positive for you to take a long travel to a new and exotic land. Absolutely positive for you to take a new look at that book you purchased, but you never fully read. Good to take some steps of cleansing the body to clear the mind. Good to join a consciousness group or find an unusual teacher who can open your third eye. VIRGO. Good to pay attention to the material world and to get your resources organized and in order. Next year you will begin to not care about all of that and good now to do what you can do so that you have something to rely upon and not have to think about it anymore. Take inventory and make a plan. Keep your investments conservative, low-risk, and long term. There comes a time when the mind lets go of its grip and you can just melt into contentment. It is not peace that you want or even bliss. Contentment is the highest state of being there can be.

Page 24

LIBRA.. Saturn in Libra until 2012 right now being challenged by Uranus (change, freedom) and Pluto (crisis, transformation). The energy now is about putting your feet so firmly on the ground that no wind can knock you down. It is about being like a tree with roots so deep, deep, deep that you can withstand any storm. Saturn is the Aloneness of being with the presence of yourself. Saturn is the foundation and the rock upon which to stand. It is a practical, earthy, organizing time to make yourself self-sufficient and strong.

SCORPIO. Ordinary day to day conversation is boring to you now. People are just too superficial in what they say and their words carry no depth. It is the real meaning underneath the words that you want to know. You either question deeper, deeper until they get uncomfortable or you know better than to say anything at all. You are searching for authenticity and depth now and nothing else will do. You have to know the secret. You have to know what is hidden. You have to know the cause and the original source. SAGITTARIUS. The grass may be greener on the other side of the fence, but it is the grass beneath your feet that is important to you now. It is a good time to think small, to see the trees and forget the forest. It is a good time to think near and close. Sometimes you have your eyes so far over the horizon that you trip over the crack in the sidewalk in front of you. Take pleasure in the little, little things in life that you can see, touch, feel, and smell. Come back to your basic six senses and enjoy the routine parts of your life. CAPRICORN. Pluto in Capricorn until 2024. During this time, there will be a process of death and rebirth, of crisis and consciousness, and trauma and empowerment. It starts off with a bang right now with a Uranus (change, explosive) and Saturn (fixed stability) T-Square. All kinds of challenges going on. It is a process of purification and cleansing the superficial until you get to the root and the core. This is where you find the Truth of that which is eternal and never dies. This is where you find your power and transform. AQUARIUS. Revelation and revolution in your mind. This is one of the most creative times of your life. New ideas, new thoughts, and new ways of communicating happen for you now. The 3rd Eye opens up and ‘Eureka!’, you suddenly See. Good to study how the unconscious mind works now with processes like nlp or the 112 meditations of Shiva. Good to search for anomalies and other unusual oddities that do not fit accepted ‘fact’. Good to think outside the box and to trust in sudden leaps in intuition. Good to know what you do not know. PISCES. Soft, kind and caring precious one, Don’t be a thief. Because you are such a good listener, people tell you their problems and suffering. You try to help. Sometimes you try to help by feeling their pain with them. It doesn’t work. Now, two people are suffering. Don’t try to steal people’s suffering. It belongs to them. They earned it and they need it to help them grown. Just listen and Be There for them and receive, but don’t hold onto it and don’t try to take it away from them. What is theirs is and what is yours is yours and there is a difference between the two.

Where Were You? Northeast riders mc RIDERS MC NORTHEAST 15th annual ANNUAL hawg wild pig roast 15TH HAWG WILD PIG ROAST May 6th, 2010 . Philadelphia . Pennsylvania words, ridin’ and pix by lutz 70+ degrees and a smokin party over in the City of Brotherly Love... What else could you want on a beautiful June Spring day? Well if that’s what you where lookin for it wasnt hard to find, checkout the Northeast Riders MC 15th Hawg Wild Pig Roast. The Northeast Riders MC have been around for many years and equally have thrown some much awaited parties like the Hawg Wild Pig Roast in the Spring and the Fall Ball in the Fall. The party was held at the Philadelphia Ukranian Club, with lots of room to hang out as there was lots to do. Many clubs and friends of the club came out to party and the Northeast Riders MC definitely had all bases covered. The food was great with fresh cooked pig on the bbq, dogs, burgers, beans, salads and dont forget dessert!! Lookin to wet your whistle ? Beer, soda, water, more than enough for everyone. Catchup with a bro you haven’t seen in a while, maybe checkout the vendors or listen to some live music from the band “LeCompt.” And what would a biker bash be without games? There was the jap smash with guys and girls beating the sh@t out of a jap bike with a sledgehammer (good way to blow off some steam!) there was a slow race, a keg toss (good thing someone drank/drained them kegs... they’re too heavy full!) and, of course, the “weenie bite” with the winners getting some cool trophies. But the climax of the day, which many looked foward to, was Bebops infamous wet t-shirt contest, it was a good way for the girls to cool off and the guys to get warmed up! The Northeast Riders MC put alot of effort into this party and make sure all there have a great time, already lookin towards the next one, see you there! Page 30

Gettysburg Bike WeeK FOOTLOOSE, FUN, FRIENDS, FOOD, FANS, FIREWORKS, FANTASTIC! These are my “F” words to describe the 9th annual Gettysburg Bike Week held at the All Star/Eisenhower Complex. They got their motors running, and got out on the highway. The gates opened July 8th at 10:00 a.m. and non-stop action lasted four days. Mustang Sally rocked the field on Thursday. Kashmir & Bon Journey jammed out on Friday. Joy Ride and Back in Black packed every bail of hay. The bike show drew a large crowd with several excited first time winners. If you think you see the same bikes entering the shows all the time, you’re wrong. There were many really cool cycles on display that I’ve never seen before, and I’ve seen my share of bikes at shows. (See the names of the winners listed in this issue.) A big “Great Job” to Bob Farrell and his team for overseeing the bike show and awards. Did you miss participating in the field games, or poker runs? Well there’s always next year! Show us your Tatts! Congratulations to the tattoo winners, both male and female, for their colorful adornment of ink. Rubber reeked and roared at the Burn Out Pit. Talk about drawing a crowd to this event. How can you not watch this costly, for the participants, competition? Tire shredded, fender melted, and backlight blown out. Wow! What an applause both Rod Raffensberger & Greg Plank received from the spectators. A winner was hard to determine. So we had to applaud again. It was decided they were both winners. Rod and Greg split the money and the plaque will read two names for 2010 as the burn out pit winners. It was a first. We had “dual” winners. Who doesn’t love a parade?! This was truly my highlight of the week. (Not counting my 1338 mile trip to Vermont.)So where was my view of the parade...... in the front seat of the police cruiser with Officer Brand Briggs. This was his 9th consecutive year leading the parade. I hope he enjoyed my company. I tried to contain my excitement. I didn’t want him thinking I was some crazy bitch riding shot gun. I was all business. Page 32

FLBPA.com / August 2010

The parade route was carefully co-coordinated, and the miles of spectators were waiting for the motorcycles to rumble down the road. With one camera on my lap, and the other in my hand, I managed to wave at everyone that was waving at us. Through the back window and side mirror I was able to see the 4 mile long biker participation of the parade.I was anxious to get to the round about in town, so I could face the bikers heading the other direction. What a sight! I have chills just writing about it.Mayor Bill Troxell and his wife, Honey took their traditional seats in the side cars of Adamson’s Susquehanna Cycles. In this historic town: flags were flying, hands were waving, the crowd was cheering, and I was snapping away. It was a moment I absorbed deeply. Now for my acceptance speech. Thank you Mr. Bernie Yannetti for getting me a front seat in the parade. Can I reserve my seat again for next year? Thank you to the Local and State police, along with the residents of Gettysburg.I would also like to thank Nora Farrell, the volunteer coordinator, and Larry Racey and the complete Bike Week committee for their hard work and planning. A huge thank you to the Sponsors and Vendors in the Village. Without you, there wouldn’t be a bike week! Be sure to check for the information about 2011’s bike week on the web. www.gettysburgbikeweek.com Last, but not least, my husband Steve. Thanks Honey. I couldn’t be everywhere at once. You were a big help. Until next time....... See You in the Fast Lane! Alicia Helfrich York

ASK THE ATTORNEY By: Lee D. Gaber, Esquire 1-888-CYCLE-LAW LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com This month, as I began to write my column I had just learned about a tragic accident that occurred in Lancaster County, PA, wherein five of six motorcyclists were killed after a horrible collision with another vehicle. At press time, the exact cause of the accident was still unknown although it appears that the driver of the other vehicle came into the lane that the motorcyclists where occupying. Five were pronounced at the scene and the remaining passenger was in critical condition. Although I am involved with many serious accidents on a regular basis, this is one of the worst I have heard about in a long time. This was echoed by one of the investigating State Troopers who indicated it was the worst crash he had seen in his twenty years of service. Although I do not believe I know any of the individuals personally, I want to express my deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of all of those riders whose lives where tragically ended while enjoying a sport that we all love. I was moved to comment on this particular accident due to its severity and would like to remind each and every one of my readers that there is an inherent risk that we undertake every time we get on our bikes. Therefore, I would ask all of you to not only wear protective gear, but to be increasingly vigilant when riding, as there are more and more drivers who are driving while distracted. As such, it is extremely important to always use caution when approaching every intersection, stop light or stop sign. We must remain as vigilant as possible to avoid any potential obstacles which could lead to an accident. In my opinion, after twenty years of handling motorcycle accidents, the most common cause of accidents are drivers making left hand turns and pulling out from stop signs right in front of an oncoming motorcycle. Those two scenarios make up about 80-85% of the accidents I see. The remaining 15-20% consist of a variety of situations including everything from being hit from behind, to coming around a curve and being faced with an automobile which has taken the curve wide, to wet roads and/or debris on the roadways. In some of these cases, speed plays a roll in the causation of the accident. However, in many cases there simply isn’t much we can do to avoid impact. But, to decrease the odds of a collision, when approaching an intersection you should always assume that the other driver does not see you. This will put you in a defensive posture and will increase your reaction and avoidance time, if necessary. While this is no guarantee of avoiding an accident, any extra advantage might just be enough to avoid an incident. I often tell my wife, and my children, that I would rather slow down and avoid a possible accident than argue about who is at fault later. Again, my deepest sympathies go out to all of those who knew and loved the riders that were tragically taken away from us as a result of this senseless accident and I wish the very best to the passenger who is still fighting to recover. I hope you find this information informative and if you would like additional information on this topic, or any other, I can always be reached at LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com or 1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888-292-5352).

Sincerely, LEE D. GABER, Esquire

Grilled Venison Tenderloin Medallions Submitted by: Wayne D’Angelo, Pa.

Ingredients and Directions: Slice the venison tenderloin into one inch sections. Wrap each one, around the edge, with a strip of bacon. Use thin sliced bacon, and toothpick it into place. Season the venison medallions with a bit of cracked black pepper and salt. Cook quickly over hot charcoal until medium rare to medium. After two minutes on each side, check the internal temperature. Medium rare is 145 degrees Fahrenheit... medium is 160F. Remove the grilled tenderloin medallions from the grill and serve immediately. Just before serving, brush on hot, melted butter. It’s decadent, but ooh, what a taste! Venison tenderloin charcoal grilled in this manner can be accompanied with a baked potato, grilled zucchini squash, and hot grilled and buttered French bread.

Melody’s Chocolate Coffee Pudding Cake Ingredients: 1/2 cup flour, all-purpose ½ cup pastry flour, whole wheat ¼ cup sugar 1/3 cup cocoa powder 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1 large egg ½ cup milk 1 tablespoon butter, unsalted 1 tablespoon canola oil 2 teaspoons vanilla extract ½ cup chocolate chips (semi-sweet) 1 ¼ cups coffee hot and brewed ½ cup brown sugar packed ¼ cup walnuts chopped, toasted or pecans 1 powdered sugar for dusting Directions: Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat a 2-quart baking dish with cooking spray. Whisk all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Whisk egg, milk, oil and vanilla in a medium bowl. Then add to the dry mixture, stir with a rubber spatula until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips. Spread evenly the batter into the prepared baking dish. Mix hot coffee and brown sugar in the measuring cup or a bowl and pour over the top of the batter. Sprinkle with nuts. (It may look a little bit strange now, don’t worry. During baking, cake forms on top and sauce is underneath.) Bake the pudding cake until the top springs back when touched lightly, 35 minutes. Let cool for at least 10 minutes. Dust with confectioners’ sugar if desired and serve warm.

TEEN DRAG RACER REMAINS UNDEFEATED

She’s 15, cute as a button, weighs about 80 lbs., attends high school and drag races motorcycles. She is in the 1100 cc class, going up against adults, was undefeated in 2009 and is continuing the streak in 2010.

typically the other way around. Ashley’s best time so far is 5.12 seconds at 100 mph on a 500 ft. track and without wheelie bars. She also works on her drag bike and is able to pull the motor apart and reassemble most of it without supervision.

Ashley is currently trying to make her mark in the next class, the 1450 cc Pro Modified Class, and has placed second in the two races she ran. She continues to work very hard to sustain and surpass her standing as a dragster and has tremendous support from sponsors like M&A Excavating, DeTurck Racing & Fabrication (Ashley’s Dad), Debs Decals (Ashley’s mom), Hot Rods Total Biker, Abbi Electric, Cooter III Trucking, The RPM Shop, Guinthers Auto Body, Eye Candy Customs and Mike Miller Photography.

When she was only five years old, Ashley DeTurck wanted to know when she could race motorcycles. “When you can ride a bicycle without training wheels,” her dad, Lonnie DeTurck, told her. Three days after the training wheels came off, Ashley began riding a Yamaha PW50 that belonged to her brother, Jessie Miller, who is 6 years her senior. She ran her first race in 2000.

I asked Ashley the obvious question, “why?” Ashley’s grandfather raced at Reading Motorcycle Club for 4 or 5 years before moving to the big track and finally pro stock. He passed away 5 years ago and the bike he used to race sat idle for about 3 ½ years. Ashley picked it up one day and asked if a small motor could be added to her Grandpop’s bike. It ‘s the same bike Ashley uses today. She’s convinced that Grandpop rides on the back with her.

What’s next for Ashley? Like most teenagers, she is anxious to turn 16 and acquire her license. Unlike most teens, Ashley is excited because acquiring her license means she can finally join leagues such as AMA Drag Bike, AHDRA and NHRA Pro Stock.

Ashley races about once a month at www. pro109.com RMC Raceway located at Reading Motorcycle Club in Oley, Pennsylvania. She has won over 40 awards. In 2003, Ashley finished #4 Good luck, in the nation in the now defunct AJDRL Ashley! See you on the drag strip (American Junior Drag soon! Racing League) which ran races as far away as Florida. Ashley loves the competition. She loves to EDITOR’S NOTE: If you are interested in line up against the fastest sponsoring Ashley, please contact Lonnie racers at the track to chalDeTurck at DFCYCLE@aol.com. lenge herself. Where Were You? Battlefield Harley Davidsons Birthday Bash WHERE WERE YOU? “Pick up the pieces”, the megahit song from the 1970’s Average White Band was being heard and seen live at Battlefield Harley Davidson’s 10th Birthday Bash on June 27th. If you weren’t there, you missed a wonderful performance from this great soul & funk band! Jen and Dave LeVan, the Battlefield HD owners, graciously thanked all of us; their customers, and Staff for the continued support over the past ten years. We should be thanking them for always throwing a “good time” our way at their dealership. I have to say that was the first time I heard them shoot their cannon off. I always seem to miss that part? It was awesome. Happy Birthday from Fast Lane Biker PA Magazine. See You in the Fast Lane! Alicia “BBA” Helfrich York
