SUPPORTING OUR NATIONS WARRIORS
BY WAYNE “rock” (of the marne) LUTZ
This Veteran’s Day: “The Rescue of Streetcar 304” On my left wrist I wear a POW/MIA bracelet. The name on my POW/MIA bracelet is Colonel Thomas W. Dugan, U.S. Air Force. Col Dugan was a pilot with the 8th Bomb Squad, 7th Air Force, shot down over Laos in 1968. In 1978 Col. Dugan’s status was changed from MIA to “Died while MIA” at age 35, body not recovered. The bracelet bearing his name is worn around the edges, scuffed and scarred from many years of wear. I don’t take it off. In fact, that bracelet will remain on my wrist until one of two things happens: 1. The remains of Col. Thomas Wayne Dugan are recovered and identified, or: 2. I die. If that sounds a little over the top, consider what these pilots went through in the mid to late 60s. The United States launched three major air bombing campaigns in those years – “Operation Rolling Thunder,” “Operation Barrel Roll,” and Operation Steel Tiger. Much of this dangerous flying took place over Laos, which was the route of the Ho Chi Minh trail, a supply chain utilizing a system of trails leading from North Vietnam to the South, over which troops, food and military supplies traveled. Maintaining the Ho Chi Minh Trail was a top priority for the Communists in the North, and at any given time it was heavily defended by Soviet-made MiG fighters and surface-to-air missiles and anti-aircraft batteries. Our American pilots were engaged in an all out, high-risk air war. According to Phillip Jennings in “The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Vietnam War,” “Barrel Roll pilots ended up providing close air support for the Royal Lao Army and anti-Communist Laotian tribes fighting the Pathet Lao in the North Vietnamese. The operation was a closely held secret because of the alleged neutrality of Laos. The manifest reality on the ground, however, was that the North Vietnamese not only had 40,000 troops fighting alongside the Communist Pathet Lao to overthrow the Laotian government, but were using Laos as a supply line and staging area for their ongoing invasion of South Vietnam.”
Page 2
Despite the danger and loss of American planes and pilots, tens of thousands of enemy troops were killed and thousands of tons of food, equipment and weapons were destroyed along the trail through Laos. But many of the pilots shot down there were lost to us forever, and if there is one thing an American military man cannot stand, it’s leaving a comrade, whether dead or alive, behind. The following story, also from that above referenced author, illustrates the lengths to which an American will go to rescue or recover a fellow American. It’s the story of “the Rescue of Streetcar 304.” Navy pilot Lieutenant Kenny Fields, flying an A-7, was shot down at Techpone, Laos, in May 1968, on his first combat mission off the carrier USS America. Shortly thereafter a rescue pilot was shot down nearby. By the time Fields’ rescue was complete (forty hours after he ejected) the Air Force had flown 189 sorties, four pilots had been shot down, and seven aircraft were lost or heavily damaged in the effort to rescue him. One of the pilots shot down became a POW for five years. This uniquely American mentality is on display on a small scale by each POW bracelet worn by each American across the country and down through the years. And there is no better time than on Veterans Day to look at the bracelet and think about the man behind the name engraved there, and to dwell on the depth of honor and sacrifice that this one bracelet represents. An unknown author wrote, “A veteran is someone who, at one point in his/her life, made out a check, payable to the United States of America, for an amount of “up to and including my life.” This Veteran’s Day, think about all those checks, especially those that were cashed, and what they mean to our freedom. www.warriorswatch.com

humor in the fast lane Compiled by the Chief
All jokes are submitted by our readers. We dont know where they came from or who wrote them. Just enjoy!! PUNS 1. A vulture boards an airplane, carrying two dead raccoons. The stewardess looks at him and says, “I’m sorry, sir, only one carrion allowed per passenger.” 2. Two fish swim into a concrete wall. One turns to the other and says, “Dam!” 3. Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, so they lit a fire in the craft. Unsurprisingly it sank, proving once again that you can’t have your kayak and heat it too. 4. Two hydrogen atoms meet. One says, “I’ve lost my electron.” The other says, “Are you sure?” The first replies “Yes, I’m positive.” 5. Did you hear about the Buddhist who refused Novocain during a root canal? His goal: transcend dental medication. 6. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. “But why?”, they asked, as they moved off. “Because,” he said, “I can’t stand chess-nuts boasting in an open foyer.” 7. A woman delivers a set of identical twins and decides to give them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named “Ahmal.” The other goes to a family in Spain ; they name him “Juan.” Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, “They’re twins! If you’ve seen Juan, you’ve seen Ahmal.” 8. A group of friars were behind on their belfry payments, so they opened up a small florist shop to raise funds. Since everyone liked to buy flowers from the men of God, a rival florist across town thought the competition was unfair. He asked the good fathers to close down, but they would not. He went back and begged the friars to close. They ignored him. So, the rival florist hired Hugh MacTaggart, the roughest and most vicious thug in town to “persuade” the friars to close. Hugh beat up the friars and trashed their Page 6
store, saying he’d be back if they didn’t close up shop. Terrified, they did so, thereby proving that only Hugh can prevent florist friars. 9. Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and, with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him (Oh, dude, this is so bad, it’s good…..) a super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis. 10. And finally, there was the person who sent ten different puns to friends, with the hope that at least one of the puns would make them laugh. No pun in ten did.
The teacher asked the class to use the word ‘fascinate’ in a sentence. Molly put up her hand and said, ‘My family went to my granddad’s farm and we all saw his pet sheep. It was fascinating.’ The teacher said, ‘That was good, but I wanted you to use the word fascinate, not fascinating’. Sally raised her hand. She said, ‘My family went to see Rock City and I was fascinated.’ The teacher said, ‘Well, that was good Sally, but I wanted you to use the word ‘fascinate.’ Little Johnny raised his hand. The teacher hesitated because she had been burned by Little Johnny before. She finally decided there was no way he could damage the word ‘fascinate’, so she called on him for his offering. Johnny said, My aunt Gina has a sweater with ten buttons, but her tits are so big she can only fasin eight.’

Glenview Alliance Cruise Night
By: Alicia “BBA Helfrich
Another annual cruise night was held at the Glenview Alliance Church in Glen Rock, PA. On August 20th cycles and cars cruised into the parking lot and field sporting their shiny toys. The weather was great, and again, this Biker Ministry gave away door prizes, along with free food and drinks. They even had free registration to enter the show for trophies. Join in next year. www.glenviewcma.org See You in the Fast Lane! BBA

30 YEARS OF BRINGING JOY! “For The Kids” Toy Run participants made their first run on December 13, 1980 from a parking lot at Broad Street and Cheltenham Avenue. Approximately 50 motorcycles toured through the city streets following the lead of Mike Horton and Denny Waldman, the chapter’s president and treasurer, respectively, who conceived the idea to dispel the bikers’ “bad guy” image. Through the years, as notoriety of this successful toy collection has expanded, so has the wealth of support. Celebrities such as the Honorable Seamus P. McCaffery, former Mayor of Philadelphia & Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Former State Representative Teresa Forcier, the Philly Phanatic, Santa Claus, recording artist Meatloaf, and actor Randall “Tex” Cobb, have given their time and talent to endorse our event. A special Thank you goes to Pierre Robert of 93.3 WMMR, Cavanaugh’s River Deck, Finnegan’s Wake, Tony Luke’s, the Philadelphia Police Department, the supporting sponsors and vendors, and all of the Bikers that hailed from the Mid-Atlantic Region to bring the joy of Christmas to the children and a smile to their faces. “If we can help take a child’s attention away from his or hers illness or pain for even five minutes, then we’ve accomplished something.”
Well, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. So after 30 years of hard work and dedication, the largest motorcycle parade in the World, the Toy Run “For The Kids” is over. The parade itself has gotten so big that the City of Philadelphia and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia can no longer handle the large numbers of participants anymore. The 2010 Toy Run had an estimated count of 115,000 participants, by far the largest turnout ever. A.B.A.T.E. of Pennsylvania’s Delaware Valley Chapter 63 would like to extend a huge Thank You to all who participated over the past 30 years!

Where wereBy:you? Alicia “BBA” Helfrich Delmarva Bike Week
BIKER BABE ALICIA’s FOUR DAY ADVENTURES AT DELMARVA BIKE WEEK 2011 Ahhh... in Ocean City Maryland on two wheels, in September. We all know what that means. It was DELMARVA BIKE WEEK (DBW) and OC BIKE FEST. This year I headed out in the dark of the early morning without rain. My girlfriend, Joanne, drove her cage which was loaded. We decided to pack alot this year, including the larger cooler, and not just biker boots, but high heels and more for those nights out on the town. We were ready to party. We hit Winter Place Park in Salisbury, our first stop. Did you notice the Fast Lane Biker Banner on the fence? Tradition for me is to stop at the food vendor who makes a great breakfast sandwich every year. It’s a wonderful feeling seeing the same vendors, and new ones, year after year. I was on a mission for another girlfriend who sent me a text message asking me to buy her a fox tail if I saw them. She wanted it for her bike. Well, give me a job to do, and I “git ‘r done.” As we walked around the huge park property I spotted the fury, bushy, tails in the distance at Leon Leather’s stand. I was excited to see my friend Charlie Ransom of the American Motor Drome’s Wall of Death. What a cool dude he is, and he has the sweetest smile. Thanks Charlie for our annual hug and photo shoot with me and Joanne. Andrew from Wild Bill’s Old fashioned soda company was all smiles when I surprised him. It was good to see you too. By this time the band was playing on the stage at 11:00am. Bikers were starting to ride in one after another, and purchases were being made. I always buy myself the annual DBW patch and pin at the same official DBW stand. I get anxious wondering what the new t-shirt logo will look like each year. This year’s T was a motorcycle, a sunset, and a nice silhouette of a busty Broad on the back. Personally, I didn’t think the stone parking lot was as full at noon as year’s past. I said to Joanne “where are all the bikes?” The people were there, but the bikes were not. We took the air conditioned shuttle bus to the Perdue Stadium. Well... here were the bikes! I think the bikers got smarter this year, and parked at the stadium, on the nice, smooth, black top and shuttled to the rocky lot of Winter Place Park. There was alot more to see at the stadium this year, which made for the shuttle worth the wait. After spending many hours at these two event locations we were O.C. bound, and headed out of Salisbury on 50 East. You can always count on the radar guns pointing in your direction. It’s such a great stretch of road, I really wanted to go full throttle into O.C. but I knew better. “Maryland’s finest” hides in the bushes, just like the Big Bad Wolf, and since I ride a red bike, they weren’t getting this Lil Red Riding Hood.
Page 16
So I had my schedule of places and things I wanted to do, and friends I wanted to see and hang out with. Joanne is one of my coolest friends, and she knew I was there for business and pleasure. She goes with my flow, and I go with hers. (We’ve been friends since age 3.) Since it wasn’t suppose to rain until “possibly” LATE Saturday night, I was planning on checking out the 1st Annual O.C. Bike Fest at the Inlet that day, and do alot of riding. It’s still Thursday, our first day, and we rode into Ocean City stopping at Hooper’s event, met some friends, then headed onto a bayside bar. As we were enjoying the bay scenery the winds picked up, the sky turned black, the band covered their equipment with tarps, the plastic drape coverings were lowered to protect the deck bar and patrons, and everyone took cover because the rain started pounding down. What are the odds that Joanne and I experience our first earthquake and tornado all within 3 1/2 weeks?! It was official. A tornado touched down in O.C. MD, and what were the odds a friend of mine had the condo roof partially taken off? Ocean City is 10 miles long, and it hits there? BAM! So needless to say Joanne and I helped them out as they went to another friend’s ocean front condo to stay. Our duty was to help with a few essentials. We went on a shopping spree so they would have food and beer in their new oceanfront place. It was as if we were on a scavenger hunt. We managed to take in a couple of tequila shots while waiting for ribs and angus burgers to be made for all of us. We certainly were not counting on our first night to turn out the way it did, but friends were in need, and we helped. Friday’s weather was wonderful. We hit some more hot spots, bars and restaurants and enjoyed the biker scene until Joanne got an emergency call early afternoon. She had to drive back home. Do you remember me mentioning earlier that we packed alot, because she had four wheels? I gave her some of my belongings to take back home to York, because I didn’t have my tour pack. (I didn’t need it.We had her car.) I had two days left in O.C. and a friend mentioned I could borrow their tour pack. Cool. Hence, I kept a few more things behind in my hotel for the duration of bike week. (I needed those high heels for dancing. LOL) With hugs and kisses, I wished Joanne a safe trip home and my prayers were with her. I tried to have a good time the rest of my stay, but she and her son were on my mind. I’m sure glad I have alot of friends. I hooked up with some others I knew were in town for DBW.
Page 17
Saturday’s weather was the pits! It totally sucked. It rained all day. This was my day to spend hours at the Inlet’s O.C. Bike Fest event, and just RIDE! It never happened. It rained and rained. I was so disappointed. My other friends mentioned they were heading home a day early. I said “Please get me that tour pack before you leave.” Well apparently the pack was in the other trailer, and not the one that was in O.C. with them. What else can happen? I purchased an O.C. MD logo canvas zipper bag at a gift shop, and crammed my stuff into the bag and my saddlebags. What a site I was heading home the next day with my canvas bag wrapped inside a big, yellow, plastic , Sunsations bag strapped on my bike like a hobo. I always travel with my bungee cords, and cargo net. Back to Saturday, and the terrible rainy day. I hung with friends. There’s only three things to do when you’re at the beach, and it’s raining. Go shopping, go to the movies, or go to the bars. I did not shop or go to the big screen. The streets were bare of bikes. Only cagers and the buses were seen cruising up and down Coastal highway. With a rainbow colored umbrella, bought at a gift shop, my friends and I made our way to two bars. We had some good laughs and enjoyed the shoulder to shoulder with everyone. The drinks were flowing. I turned down a couple who wanted to give me money to “get my t*ts out.” I had to keep it professional. I was working ya know. (The money would have been nice for such a simple task.) I had a hard time getting past the idea of a full day wasted because of the down pour, and what could have been a fantastic day of riding. Oh well, I got over it. Not really. It was 7PM and the rain stopped. I headed to my hotel, changed into those high heels, called a taxi, and went to the place to be! Dead Freddie’s on 64th street was where most of the action was all weekend. Walt and Caroline of Fastlane Biker Delmarva know how to throw a party. Thursday through Sunday they had “adult themed games”, live music, plenty of contests, the mechanical bull, the Strip Club Choppers stripper pole for dancing, FLB babe photo shoot, and much much more. I was asked to perform on the pole (That was a compliment. Must have been the heels.), and I was asked to enter the Cougar contest (Not sure that made me feel good. I felt old-er.) This biker babe was on the job, so “I watched” while snapping pictures. Dead Freddie’s had plenty of vendors to visit in the parking lot. I said hello to my friend Pearl of Fat Bottom Girlz, before I said my goodbyes to the FLBDELMARVA family. I will never miss their bike week action. It is the place to party, dance, and have a great time with friends with plenty of activities to entertain you. I had a blast Saturday night despite the earlier hours of the day, in the rain.
Page 18
I hopped in a cab back to the hotel, and guess what? Yep, it was raining. After not being able to sleep Friday and Saturday night, due to the rowdy bunch below my balcony until 5:30am, I decided to pack my bags and head out early Sunday morning. It looked like it was going to rain any minute. Well, I swear, I had my raingear on, like everyone else, and when I pulled out of the parking lot it started. With the rain and a frown on my face, and memories of another DBW on my mind, I headed for home alone, with my yellow bag as my passenger. Eventually the rain stopped. Two hours from home an “old school” looking dude, covered in leathers, on a very loud, turquoise Harley Davidson was on the highway with me. We gave the “biker wave” and passed each other off and on through the traffic. Where am I going with this? I’m about to tell you. We paired up and rode HARD & FAST together for a very long stretch. It was my best ride home from DELMARVA Bike Week. I was all smiles, and it felt awesome! Yes mom, I made it home safely from another adventurous trip. See You in the Fast Lane AND see you next year for DBW. (See the banner picture with next year’s dates.) Alicia “BBA” Helfrich York

Faster... And faster... Let go and trust the soul of the beast. Mindless instinct blurs reality. Two speeding wheels Welded now into one racing heart Melting into the passing horizon beneath. Frightening beauty Morphs into unbridled passion. Fears frozen in place, Left behind with the present, Unable to catch the future, Already past. Crossing the line now, and then To the untapped consciousness of life; Leaving it to follow, Too late. Still faster... And faster... Another Good Mile By: Rod Hatter Ridin' down the highway sun in my face. Bug juice and road tar all over the place. As my lady sits back we head for the hills. Both of us loving how great the ride feels. ‘Round the corner we go into the trees. It's just our luck to hit a swarm of bees. Ooch! Ouch! Awe! We feel the stings, down in the arm pits. Behind her arms swing. So down the road we set up our camp, and pull out those stingers in the light of a lamp. Both her and I crack a big smile. Just another adventure on another good mile...........
Old man ... Your vest is well worn It has seen better days, Like when it hung beside your bike In the middle of the living room The leather still strong and street black. Old man.. Your steed has carried you far Through wind and rain And narrow pass roads Hidden in winter's whiteouts Or clicking and cranking down While you both rested In summer campgrounds Beside rivers and hills A day's journey up ahead... Old man... Your memories are packed In saddle bags and photos Of bike runs to Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, While the horizon of Connecticut Held you steady with traces Of your Yankee family ties And roads that brought you back Again and again. Old man... Your life has twisted into knots So much lost, never to be replaced A mean streak fills in the spaces Left by roads that just led nowhere Rusting your chrome and stripping love From your heart like a thief in the night Old man... ASK THE ATTORNEY By: Lee D. Gaber, Esquire 1-888-CYCLE-LAW LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com
This month’s column actually deals with some GOOD news on the insurance front for a change. Normally when I comment on insurance issues the news is generally bad. However, I recently learned that the Erie Insurance Company has requested that they be allowed to offer motorcycle coverage that is capable of being stacked onto Erie automobile coverage. Although the change has not yet taken place, the fact that Erie is requesting it, is a positive sign and signals to me that Erie is likely to start competing for motorcycle insurance business. That usually means lower premiums due to increased competition. To the best of my knowledge, the only company that currently allows you to stack your motorcycle policy onto your auto policy is State Farm. However, that assumes that you have purchased the “stacking” option on both polices. I assume the same would also hold true for Erie. This should be welcome news to anyone who currently has Erie Insurance and wants to insure their motorcycle with Erie. On another note, I recently received a call from a client advising that his private health plan in PA has an exclusion written into the policy allowing the insurance company to deny coverage if he is involved in a motorcycle accident and is not wearing a helmet”. Although, I haven’t seen the language, I have no reason to disbelieve that the language is in the plan. Whether this exclusion would hold up if it was challenged legally, I don’t know. This is the first time I have heard of any type of helmet exclusion, but if challenged and upheld, it may become standard language in many health policies. This is clearly the exception to the rule right now, however I fear that as insurance companies are becoming increasingly restrictive, this language could find its way into more health insurance policies. The only similar language I have seen, has been found in Union sponsored health insurance plans in New Jersey, wherein many of them have restricted the coverage they provide if the injuries occur while operating a motorcycle. I will keep all of you informed when and if I find out more information about this topic. In the meantime, just to be safe, you may want to review your own health policy contract to find out if this language is in your policy, because it could have a devastating effect if you are ever involved in an accident without a helmet. On a final, note, if any of you are currently renting a home or an apartment, it is imperative that you purchase renters insurance. This insurance will cover your personal possessions if they are stolen, damaged or destroyed, be it by flood, fire or theft. It also protects you against liability in the event someone is injured while visiting your home. Many people are under the misconception that if you are renting, the owner of the property will have insurance that will covers your personal effects. This is absolutely not true. In order to be personally protected, you must purchase this coverage. It is normally very reasonable and can be a life saver if you ever experience a loss as described above. I hope you find this information informative and if you would like additional information on this topic, or any other, I can always be reached at LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com or 1-888-CYCLELAW (1-888-292-5352). got strep? Know the signs of Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Strep
Sometimes when children present with difficult behaviors they are given a mental health diagnosis without considering whether an infection might be the root cause of the disorder. When the child’s behaviors are the result of strep antibodies attacking the basal ganglia of the brain, the condition is known as PANDAS: Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Strep. Once the condition is triggered by strep, subsequent exacerbations can be caused by other bacteria or viruses such as the flu. Here are some of the symptoms of PANDAS.
▢ Obsessive-compulsive behaviors: can include repetitive behaviors, excess fear nnnof germs, hair pulling and eating disorders ▢ Motor and verbal tics (Tourette’s) ▢ ADHD symptoms (hyperactivity, inattention, fidgety) ▢ Separation anxiety (child is “clingy” and has difficulty separating from his or her ccccaregivers ▢ Mood changes (irritability, sadness, emotional swings) ▢ Sleep disturbance ▢ Nighttime bedwetting and/or daytime urinary frequency ▢ Fine/gross motor changes (e.g. changes in handwriting) ▢ Joint pains
