1/2 Boy 1/2 Man The average age of the military man is 19 years. He is a short haired, tight-muscled kid who, under normal circumstances is considered by society as half man, half boy. Not yet dry behind the ears, not old enough to buy a beer, but old enough to die for his country. He never really cared much for work and he would rather wax his own car than wash his father’s, but he has never collected unemployment either. He’s a recent High School graduate; he was probably an average student, pursued some form of sport activities, drives a ten year old jalopy, and has a steady girlfriend that either broke up with him when he left, or swears to be waiting when he returns from half a world away. He listens to rock and roll or hiphop or rap or jazz or swing and a 155mm howitzer. He is 10 or 15 pounds lighter now than when he was at home because he is working or fighting from before dawn to well after dusk. He has trouble spelling, thus letter writing is a pain for him, but he can field strip a rifle in 30 seconds and reassemble it in less time in the dark. He can recite to you the nomenclature of a machine gun or grenade launcher and use either one effectively if he must. He digs foxholes and latrines and can apply first aid like a professional. He can march until he is told to stop, or stop until he is told to march. He obeys orders instantly and without hesitation, but he is not without spirit or individual dignity. He is self-sufficient. He has two sets of fatigues: he washes one and wears the other. He keeps his canteens full and his feet dry. He sometimes forgets to brush his teeth, but never to clean his rifle. He can cook his own meals, mend his own clothes, and fix his own hurts. If you’re thirsty, he’ll share his water with you; if you are hungry, his food. He’ll even split his ammunition with you in the midst of battle when you run low.. He has learned to use his hands like weapons and weapons like they were his hands. He can save your life - or take it, because that is his job. He will often do twice the work of a civilian, draw half the pay, and still find ironic humor in it all. He has seen more suffering and death than he should have in his short lifetime. He has wept in public and in private, for friends who have fallen in combat and is unashamed.. Page 2

He feels every note of the National Anthem vibrate through his body while at rigid attention, while tempering the burning desire to ‘square-away ‘ those around him who haven’t bothered to stand, remove their hat, or even stop talking. In an odd twist, day in and day out, far from home, he defends their right to be disrespectful. Just as did his Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather, he is paying the price for our freedom. Beardless or not, he is not a boy. He is the American Fighting Man that has kept this country free for over 200 years. He has asked nothing in return, except our friendship and understanding. Remember him, always, for he has earned our respect and admiration with his blood. And now we even have women over there in danger, doing their part in this tradition of going to War when our nation calls us to do so. As you go to bed tonight, remember this shot. . ... A short lull, a little shade and a picture of loved ones in their helmets. When you read this, please stop for a moment and say a prayer for our ground troops in Afghanistan , sailors on ships, and airmen in the air, and for those in Iraq , Afghanistan and all foreign countries. Of all the gifts you could give a US Soldier, Sailor, Coastguardsman, Marine, or Airman, prayer is the very best one. Prayer Wheel ‘Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Amen.’

Warriors Watch by Wayne “Rock” (of the Marne) Lutz pHOTOS BY Heather Salazar

Supporting our Nations Warriors This Veteran’s Day: “The Rescue of Streetcar 304”

On my left wrist I wear a POW/MIA bracelet. The name on my POW/MIA bracelet is Colonel Thomas W. Dugan, U.S. Air Force. Col Dugan was a pilot with the 8th Bomb Squad, 7th Air Force, shot down over Laos in 1968. In 1978 Col. Dugan’s status was changed from MIA to “Died while MIA” at age 35, body not recovered. The bracelet bearing his name is worn around the edges, scuffed and scarred from many years of wear. I don’t take it off. In fact, that bracelet will remain on my wrist until one of two things happens: 1. The remains of Col. Thomas Wayne Dugan are recovered and identified, or: 2. I die. If that sounds a little over the top, consider what these pilots went through in the mid to late 60s. The United States launched three major air bombing campaigns in those years – “Operation Rolling Thunder,” “Operation Barrel Roll,” and Operation Steel Tiger. Much of this dangerous flying took place over Laos, which was the route of the Ho Chi Minh trail, a supply chain utilizing a system of trails leading from North Vietnam to the South, over which troops, food and military supplies traveled. Maintaining the Ho Chi Minh Trail was a top priority for the Communists in the North, and at any given time it was heavily defended by Soviet-made MiG fighters and surface-to-air missiles and antiaircraft batteries. Our American pilots were engaged in an all out, high-risk air war. According to Phillip Jennings in “The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Vietnam War,” “Barrel Roll pilots ended up providing close air support for the Royal Lao Army and anti-Communist Laotian tribes fighting the Pathet Lao in the North Vietnamese. The operation was a closely held secret because of the alleged neutrality of Laos. The manifest reality on the ground, however, was that the North Vietnamese not only had 40,000 troops fighting alongside the Communist Pathet Lao to overthrow the Laotian government, but were using Laos as a supply line and staging area for their ongoing invasion of South Vietnam.”

The following story, also from that above referenced author, illustrates the lengths to which an American will go to rescue or recover a fellow American. It’s the story of “the Rescue of Streetcar 304.” Navy pilot Lieutenant Kenny Fields, flying an A-7, was shot down at Techpone, Laos, in May 1968, on his first combat mission off the carrier USS America. Shortly thereafter a rescue pilot was shot down nearby. By the time Fields’ rescue was complete (forty hours after he ejected) the Air Force had flown 189 sorties, four pilots had been shot down, and seven aircraft were lost or heavily damaged in the effort to rescue him. One of the pilots shot down became a POW for five years. This uniquely American mentality is on display on a small scale by each POW bracelet worn by each American across the country and down through the years. And there is no better time than on Veterans Day to look at the bracelet and think about the man behind the name engraved there, and to dwell on the depth of honor and sacrifice that this one bracelet represents. An unknown author wrote, “A veteran is someone who, at one point in his/her life, made out a check, payable to the United States of America, for an amount of “up to and including my life.” This Veteran’s Day, think about all those checks, especially those that were cashed, and what they mean to our freedom. For more info please visit

www.warriorswatch.org

Despite the danger and loss of American planes and pilots, tens of thousands of enemy troops were killed and thousands of tons of food, equipment and weapons were destroyed along the trail through Laos. But many of the pilots shot down there were lost to us forever, and if there is one thing an American military man cannot stand, it’s leaving a comrade, whether dead or alive, behind. Politics Biker Style By Charles Umbenhauer

The cold chill of November is upon us. November also brings a new election cycle here in the Commonwealth. We will be electing 203 Members of the House of Representatives and 25 Senators along with a new Governor and Lt. Governor. In the meantime the 2009-2010 Legislative Session is over and all legislators have gone home to their districts and some time off for the holidays. Everyone who is successful on November 2 will return to Harrisburg in January and the process begins anew. ABATE of PA had three bills that we were diligently working on but unfortunately due to “political games we were unsuccessful and will have to reintroduce those bills in January and hope for better results.

a reduction as seen in 2009 it will give us a leg up on the fight. However, and I am concerned that the statistics may not be in our favor it gives the Frankel gang some ammunition. We will continue to fight the good fight in Harrisburg but it would be more than a little helpful if nothing else, you spend a little bit of that Christmas cash this year on an ABATE membership for $25. It could make all the difference in the world if enough riders want to continue to ride free in PA and are willing to put their money where their mouth is. We can be contacted by calling 717-731-8955 or online at abatepa.org Happy Thanksgiving. www.abatepa.org

I suppose we should take the high road and look at what did not happen that actually was in our favor. Representative Dan Frankel had introduced legislation that would have reinstated a mandatory helmet law for all riders in PA. In this case, fortunately, his efforts failed and his bill never saw the light of day in the House Transportation Committee. Now with that said, heed my warning. With a new session and a new Governor and a good dose of new legislators, Dan Frankel will no doubt reload and take another shot at our freedom to choose. We will not be caught sleeping. As in every session since the modification of our helmet law in 2003, we have fought back any attempt to revisit the helmet issue. We will not know for several months what the 2010 statistics were on motorcycle accidents and fatalities. If we are lucky enough to repeat Page 6

Where Were You?

Pride and Ride Fox 43’s Pride and Ride drew 1300 pre registered riders, and nearly 2000 showed up for the 50 mile ride across York County. News Anchor, Evan Forester, led the ride through the by-ways and highways of York and the surrounding area. The ride ended at the Sovereign Bank Stadium. There, bikers and spectators could grab a bite to eat or throw back a few brews. Three bands performed, while tattoo artists were busy with their “ink jobs.” Again, another great weekend of sun and fun on two wheels! See You in the Fast Lane! Alicia BBA Helfrich York

HUMOR IN THE FAST LANE

Compiled by the Chief

All jokes are submitted by our readers. We dont know where they came from or who wrote them. Just enjoy!!!

An attractive blonde arrived at the casino. She seemed a little intoxicated and bet twenty-thousand dollars on a single roll of the dice. She said, 'I hope you don't mind, but I feel much luckier when I'm completely nude'. With that, she stripped from the neck down, rolled the dice and yelled, "Come on baby, mama needs new clothes!" As the dice came to a stop, she jumped up and down and squealed...'YES! YES! I WON, I WON !' She hugged each of the dealers and then picked up her winnings and her clothes and quickly departed. The dealers stared at each other dumbfounded. Finally, one of them asked, "What did she roll?" The other answered, "I don't knowI thought you were watching.'

A biker is riding down a back road in Alabama .. A sign in front of a restaurant reads: HAPPY HOUR SPECIAL Lobster Tail and Beer "Lord a'mighty," he says to himself, "Thems my three favorites!"

A guy finds himself in front of the Pearly Gates. St. Peter explains that it’s not so easy to get in heaven. There are some criteria before entry is allowed. St. Peter asked the guy, “Were you religious in life? Did you attend church services?” “No.” answered the guy St. Peter told him, “That’s bad. Were you generous? Did you give money to the poor? To charities?” “No.” answered the guy “That too is bad. Did you do any good deeds? Helped your neighbor? Anything?” “No.” answered the guy St. Peter was becoming concerned. Exasperated, St. Peter said, “Look, everybody does something nice sometimes. Work with me, I’m trying to help. Now think!” The guy said, “There was this old lady. I came out of a store and found her surrounded by a dozen Bikers. They had taken her purse and were shoving her around, taunting and abusing her. I got so mad I fought through the crowd, and got her purse back. I then helped her to her feet. I then went up to the biggest, baddest biker and told him how despicable, cowardly and mean he was and then spat in his face”. “Wow,” said Peter. “That’s impressive. When did this happen?” “Oh, about 10 minutes ago.

Doug Keim Creative Cycles

Americana The Build

Early in 2010 Doug Keim from Creative Cycles, Inc in Wall, New Jersey was contacted by David Zuckerburg from RIDES / XXL Magazines regarding several bikes they wanted to build in conjunction with Harley-Davidson Motor Co.. After lots of talk and face to face meetings the deal was done. Doug then spent time focusing on ‘what the bike’ needed to be to please all those involved. Time was then spent on the phone with the person that the bike was to be built for. That person is none other than Mr. Pharrell Williams of music industry fame as well as being the founder of Billionaire Boys Club / Ice Cream Brand Clothing. Doug asked question after question, attempting to find out what Pharrell liked and what he didn’t like. After careful consideration to all of the fact finding, he then spent a ton of time searching the H-D accessory catalog along with and several aftermarket parts catalogs to come up with ‘just the right’ group of parts and accessories for this build. As you can see, the result of all this effort is a Harley-Davidson “Cross-Bones” like no other. The concept behind the bike was to come up with a modern high tech Harley that still reflects on the early days of Harley-Davidson, as well as the early days of our great country and the struggles we faced. It was decided to build a bike that was U.S. Military in color and feel, with a combination of vintage and current styling. In looking over the bike, I think they got it right. So how did Doug, Chris and the Creative Cycles crew get to this point, well it wasn’t just a ‘bolt to-

Where Were You? OASIS OF HOPE RIVER RIDE AND POKER RUN On Saturday, October 9th, by 10:15am riders were on their way for a beautiful ride through the countryside of York and Lancaster counties. The ride included two State parks, river views, and plenty of fall foliage. Food, poker hands, and a silent auction were waiting for the bikers at Kline's Run Park, along the river, in Wrightsville after the ride. Oasis of Hope is "a faith-based safe house specifically designed to restore lives and build life/occupational skills for victims of domestic minor sex trafficking Debbie Colton, the Founder of Oasis of Hope, and Tracy Hagen Powell, and the 45 people who attended rose over $2200.00 with all the proceeds used to build and open the Oasis of Hope House. The house will be built in a secluded part of northern PA. U.S. Assistant DA, Gordon Zubrod spoke about "Realities of Local Busts and Needs." Another speaker was Nancy Winston, Director of Shared Hope International. www.sharedhope. org This benefit sure opened my eyes, and dismissed my ignorance of human trafficking. This doesn't just happen in "other" countries. It's going on right here in the United States of America. Yes, your daughters are, and can be victims of this horrific business.

SCOPE OF THE PROBLEM: (Taken from the National Report on Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking) * At least 100,000 children are used in prostitution every year in the United States. * The average age of entry into prostitution is 13 years old. * Prostituted girls are often controlled by a pimp who recruits them into sex trafficking by posing as a boyfriend, caretaker, and protector. * The three primary manifestations of child sex traffickingin America are: pimp-controlled prostitution, familial prostitution, and/or survival sex. MOOD OF THE MOMENT. The planets that were in such terrifying aspects this summer have lightened up. Saturn has passed on deeper into Libra and Uranus has gone retrograde back into Pisces. Pluto moves steadily on doing its job of salvaging and rebuilding the mistakes of the past and what has decayed. Thousands of bridges need to be rebuilt, thousands of old oil wells need to be capped, pollution needs to be cleaned up, and research to find new solutions needs to be continued. The next big unexpected BP-type crisis probably will not emerge until the summer of 2011. This is re-building time. Meanwhile, I am still looking for news of this revolutionary archaeological discovery I expected. Pluto, by definition, is very secretive and it is hard to find out. ARIES. Freedom is coming, but first you have to let go. Let go of anything heavy that is holding you back. Let go of what gives you certainty or security. Let go of old habits. Let go of anything that is not compatible with your True Self. Like an overloaded plane too heavy to lift off, throw out the baggage and even the chairs and the pilot too. Time to fly is coming soon my friend and open skies will be beckoning you to become one of the winds. Forget any temptation to argue with others about their beliefs or yours. It will just hold you back.

TAURUS. Well, well, well, love, relationship, and friends are happening for you now during this time. It is a problem of abundance. The average person has time or space for only 5 or 6 close friends at the most. You are going to have more invitations than that. So pick the people that give you the most joy and uplifting spirit and absorb their auras and drink your fill. Be like a camel because the desert of retreat and aloneness is just a couple of years away. Both are necessary and complimentary. Good to see both sides at the same time. GEMINI. Mars opposite Gemini during this time gives a tendency to argument from others. They may be unnecessarily critical or aggressive toward you. They want to go left and you are going to the right. They want to take a taxi and you enjoy the walk. Compromise is not easy at this time so your choices are to separate or to have an outspoken disagreement. Not to worry. Arguments are just another form of communication and enemies are just another form of relationship. Good to know all sides and to mix the spice with the sugar sometimes…. also, remember to slow down. CANCER. Success or failure? Good news or bad news? Trauma or transformation? You will never know. It is the Osho story of the farmer and the horse. What smells like shit turns out to be fertilizer and what looks like fertilizer creates a dead zone and fish kill in the Gulf. Dominance and power issues with others now just to help you find your inner strength and grow. Sudden new insights and knowledge now that expand your horizon. Thoughts of changing your career or goals in life, but duties and responsibilities at home are holding you back to consider the practicalities before you jump LEO. The juice for you now is in the home. Good to be there and to spend some time to make it even more pretty to express your individuality. Home is where the heart is and now is a time when you can make anyplace you are standing give you a sense of home. Good to have parties or groups or meditation meetings in your home and to invite friends over you have not seen for awhile. Be the graceful host and give your guests a sense of home where they are always welcome and invited. It is your sense of inner security that is your gift to others now.

VIRGO. Mars square Virgo during this time. You tend to be critical and angry toward yourself. Drop it. Not your fault. If money is short, it is not a failure on your part. It is just a Saturn transit and this too shall pass. If you are worrying or thinking too much, it is good to drop it also. Despite all your thinking and knowing, a Neptune transit is just beginning and things are supposed to be vague, unknowable and hard to come to conclusion. Put your focus on what you know for sure in life and ignore the rest.

Page 24

LIBRA.. The more the world changes around you and the stronger the chaotic winds blow, the more you are in your center and stand firm. This is not a time for compromise or sociability or even group activities. This is a Saturn time of aloneness and self-sufficiency. If you have a choice between the hard way or the easy way, then choose the hard way. Purposefully choose the struggle. Test yourself. Strengthen yourself. Keep your back straight and your eye on the ball. Follow the rules that are right for you and re-evaluate your plans for the future. SCORPIO. Venus in Scorpio during this time makes you not only tolerable to live with, but a joy. You are at your charming best and people are more relaxed with you because you are willing to compromise and maintain harmony. You consider the others’ needs and feelings as well as your own. Venus has to do with beauty and so it is a good idea to go with the flow by getting yourself new clothes and dressing up. Pay attention to the beauty in your environment and immerse yourself in beautiful places. Beauty above you, Beauty below you, Beauty to the left and right, All is Beauty. SAGITTARIUS. Happy Birthday Beloved and many more. Mars transit in Sagittarius gives you the energy to go, go, go. You might find yourself restless and hard to sit still. You might find yourself provoking debate over ideas just for the fun of it. You might find yourself more impatient than usual and avoid long lines. It is a good time to be physically active and go jogging or walking. This is an impulsive time so monitor your speed so that you don’t go any faster than your awareness can keep up. Speeding tickets are expensive these days. CAPRICORN. First, you are hard at your work making twice the effort to get half the results. Slowly, slowly, the career goes until it is better organized and a new foundation is laid. Second, you become busy with networking and linking up with friends, allies and resources. Third, there comes a quiet time when nothing seems to be happening and you go inside. Fourth, there comes a time around December 13-15 when a sudden surge of energy, an event with a powerful impact, that requires all of your resources to cope from the depths of your soul to survive. Not a good time to walk into a bar full of Hells Angels and shouting out, “Fuck You!”. AQUARIUS. A lot of energy now is about your work and making money. Time to be down to Earth and practical again after this long, long gah gah Neptune transit is almost past. Something about women and friends involved in your work, maybe as customer, boss or colleague. Something about beauty in your work and making the product or services more pretty and attractive. It is a good time to shine and some sudden, unexpected positive monetary results may happen. Good to accumulate the money now because later you are not going to care about it. PISCES. Busy, busy at your job and probably some success at it too. Get everything done now that you can get done and make yourself secure so that you don’t have to make so much effort later on. You begin to get a little non-ambitious in the Spring of 2011 and the feeling becomes even stronger in 2012 and beyond. This is when you melt away into the universe and you become part of the All-Is-One. So be like a squirrel and gather all your nuts together and store them away. This is a good time to use your self-confidence and enthusiasm to achieve what needs to be done

Bike Blessings are not just at the start of the riding season. I found this out while at another event, and picked up a flier for the 3rd annual Bike Blessing held at the Victory Church in Lancaster. Fun entertainment by The A Team stunt riders was exciting to watch. Free food and drinks were provided as well. Who doesn't like to judge other rider's bikes? There was a bike show also going on. Of course I put my vote in. Whether a motorcycle event is big or small, it's always what YOU make of it. I always make it a fun time, and always leave making new friends.

Where Were You?

By Biker Babe Alicia (BBA) Helfrich

York Bike Night here and gone. York's Harley Davidson 26th annual Open House never happened. Damn, someone dropped the ball when they announced no open house this year due to Harley's "restructuring." This "restructuring" consists of plans to demolish buildings, and to empty out"/vacate the west campus. Little did people know.... the plant was still open for touring, though they were not offering demo rides or their hot dog, and french fries stand. If you wanted to buy goods at the Harley dealerships that were usually there during open house under tents, tough. Go ride to them. They're not far from York. There was still plenty to see and do in York, and the surrounding area such as Gettysburg, Harrisburg, and Lancaster. The out of town bikers who planned their yearly vacation around this annual open house obviously went somewhere else. I had the opportunity to go to Fast Lane Biker's 1st annual Seaside Heights, NJ rally, and I stayed home to cover York's weekend bike activities. I was very curious as to what the turn out would be. Year's past, was a blast, and I made it to the past decade's open houses. Friday night, as usual, was the annual bike parade. Yep, I rode in it. Couldn't get my girlfriends out of the bar to join me. It was a good time. What makes the parade a good time is the line up an hour before. I love hanging with other iron horse riders. You get to meet some interesting people and motorcycles.

What is, and was, a big "turn on" to me is when the 2,000, yes 2,000 bikes fire up, and twist the throttle! I do believe my "WHOOHOO" was heard among all the rumbling of cycles. What a feeling! The parade turn out was 100% positive. The streets were packed with on lookers, and cell phone cameras. This was the 16th annual bike parade! Food and band entertainment was found around the square of York, but the shoulder to shoulder, "excuse me, let me through" was not experienced. There were already hundreds of bikes, and people parked along the streets, to watch the parade, and party in the bars afterwards. I was certainly one of them. Hotels and businesses lost a lot of money/ revenue because of York H-D's announcement of "no open house," even though they were a presenting sponsor?? You "Yorkers" know that San Carlos/ The Hop is a rocking awesome time, with the parking lot full of vendors, and activity...... well this was not the case this year. There were only four vendors that I counted selling their goods. I did get my chair massage from Bonnie, my friend, and Steve bought me an early birthday gift. A really sharp leather jacket. Thanks Honey. It was not the same, and it sucked. I'm getting harsh here, only because it is upsetting. Maybe things will turn around next year. Maybe more bikers will take an interest in York county again, and not let the News media splash the negative announcement on their television station hour over hour, day after day. Morning broadcast. Evening broadcast. Come on now. Enough. We all got the message HD was not holding "THEIR" open house. I guess we all have to wait until next year. Do we want Harley Davidson's Plant to determine a good time in York, or do we want to make a good time happen ourselves? You decide. FLBPA.com / November 2010

Winebrenner’s Open House October 2nd 12-5pm Literally hundreds of bikers showed up for this annual event. It was my first, and will not be my last. The Razorbacks and Redneck Punks were performing on stage, and got the crowd dancing. The burnout pit was open all day for those guys who got the itch. $10.00 logo cups got you an unlimited amount brews. All proceeds raised went to local charities. See You in the Fast Lane! Part 4

Splitting Pairs

When you are dealt a matching pair of cards (remember, ignore the suits), you have the ability to split the hand into two separate hands, and play them independently. Let’s say you are dealt a pair of eights for a total of sixteen. Sixteen is the worst possible player hand, since it is unlikely to win as is, but is very likely to bust if you draw to it. Here’s a great chance to improve a bad situation. If you are playing a hand-held game, toss the cards face-up in front of your bet just like a double down. Then, in either type of game, place a matching bet beside the original bet in the circle. Note that you must bet the same amount on a split, unlike a double-down, where you are allowed to double for less. The dealer will separate the two cards, and treat them as two independent hands. Let’s say you draw a 3 on the first 8, for a total of 11. Many casinos will allow you to double down on that hand total of 11 at this point. When this is allowed, the rule is called “Double after Split”, predictably enough. Regardless, you can play the first hand to completion, at which point the dealer will deal a second card to the second hand, and you can begin making play decisions on it. If you get additional pairs (in the first two cards of a hand), most casinos will allow you to resplit, making yet another hand. The most common rule allows a player to split up to 3 times, If you get additional pairs (in the first two cards of a hand), most casinos will making 4 separate hands, with 4 separate bets. If double after split is allowed, you could have up to 8 times your initial bet on the table if you chose! Some casinos restrict resplitting, and some allow unlimited splitting. Another fine point is that you are allowed to split any 10-valued cards, so you could split a (Jack, Queen) hand. However, this is usually a bad play: Keep the 20. The other complication for pair splits concerns splitting Aces. Splitting Aces is a very strong player move, so the casino restricts you to drawing only one additional card on each Ace. Also, if you draw a tenvalued card on one of your split Aces, the hand is not considered a Blackjack, but is instead treated as a normal 21, and therefore does not collect 3:2 odds. Some casinos allow resplitting Aces if you draw another, while many do not allow resplitting Aces although they often do allow resplitting of any other pairs. With all these restrictions, you may wonder whether it makes sense to split Aces. The answer is a resounding YES. Always split pairs of Aces.

net effect is that you break even (assuming you bet the full half bet for insurance.) This is why the bet is described as “insurance”, since it seems to protect your original bet against a dealer blackjack. Of course, if the dealer does not have blackjack, you’ll lose the insurance bet, and still have to play the original bet out. In the simplest description, Insurance is a side-bet, where you are offered 2:1 odds that the dealer has a 10-valued card underneath (“in the hole”). A quick check of the odds yields this: In a single deck game, there are 16 ten-valued cards. Assuming that you don’t see any other cards, including your own, the tens compose 16 out of 51 remaining cards after the dealer’s Ace was removed. For the insurance bet to be a break-even bet, the hole card would have to be a ten 1 out of 3 times, but 16/51 is only 1 in 3.1875.

The situation is often thought to be different when you have a Blackjack. The dealer is likely to offer you “even money” instead of the insurance bet. This is just the same old insurance bet with a simplification thrown in. Let’s ignore the “even money” name, and look at what happens when you insure a Blackjack. Let’s say you bet $10, and have a Blackjack. You would normally collect $15 for this, unless the dealer also has a blackjack, in which case you push or tie. Let’s assume that the dealer has an Ace up, and you decide to take insurance for the full amount, or $5. Now, two things can happen: 1) The dealer has a Blackjack. I tie with the $10, but collect 2:1 on the $5 insurance bet for a total profit of $10. 2) The dealer does not have Blackjack. I lose the $5, but collect $15 for my BJ. Total profit, again $10. In either case, once I make the insurance bet, I’m guaranteed a profit of $10, or even money for my original bet. So, casinos allow me to eliminate the insurance bet altogether, and simply declare that I want even money for my blackjack when the dealer has an Ace showing. You’re probably thinking that sounds like a pretty good deal. You’re guaranteed a profit even if the dealer does have Blackjack. Just remember that the guaranteed profit comes at a price. You’ll win more money in the long run by holding out for the $15, even though you’ll sometimes end up empty-handed. Nonetheless, many players are adamant that they prefer to take even money when offered. Just be aware that you’re costing yourself money when you make that choice. The basic strategy player should simply never take the Insurance and Even Money insurance bet, even the “even money” variety. Card counInsurance is perhaps the least understood of all the commonly available rules for Blackjack. This is not nec- ters on the other hand can often detect situations where essarily a bad thing because the insurance bet is normal- more than one-third of the remaining cards are ten-vally a poor bet for the player, with a high house advantage. ued, and the bet is then a profitable one. So, unless you know the bet is favorable, just ignore it. However, that’s not always the case. So, here we go: If the dealer turns an up-card of an Ace, he will offer “Insurance” to the players. Insurance bets can be made by betting up to half your original bet amount in the insurance betting stripe in front of your bet. The dealer will check to see if he has a 10-value card underneath his Ace, and if he does have Blackjack, your winning Next month “Surrender” Insurance bet will be paid at odds of 2:1. You’ll lose your original bet of course (unless you also have a Blackjack), so the Page 40 FLBPA.com / November 2010

ASK THE ATTORNEY By: Lee D. Gaber, Esquire 1-888-CYCLE-LAW LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com This past month the weather Gods once again smiled on Lansdale Bike Night, as they have been doing for 12 of the last 14 years, thereby insuring a spectacular turn out of tens of thousands of bikers all having a great time. I am always proud to sponsor this event as it brings together bikers from every walk of life to eat, drink and most importantly, check out many of the coolest bikes around. For those of you who have never been, it’s always the Saturday after Labor Day and I highly recommend attending next year and if you do, make sure you stop by my booth and say hello! I was also privileged to sponsor and ride in the Montgomery County Fallen Officers Ride on October 2, 2010 which raises money and pays tribute to local officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty! While these events are different in nature, they afford me the opportunity to speak to many different bikers and probably because many of my columns involve insurance issues, I am always asked for my opinion regarding which insurance companies I think are the best when it comes to motorcycle insurance. Those who read my column on a regular basis know that my opinion varies on this topic, however, I remain steadfast in my opinion that ultimately the insurance company you choose is not as important as the amount and type of coverages you choose. In other words, I would rather you be with a company that I consider difficult to work with, but have great coverage, than be with a great company but have purchased minimum coverage. Ultimately, if you have good insurance coverage, no matter who the company is, if we fight hard enough and long enough, justice will prevail. However, if you have not purchased the correct coverages, there will be nothing to fight about. With that being said, I recently became aware of a feature that is being offered by the Rider Insurance Company. I mention this, because I believe it is the first time I have seen true “replacement value” instead of “actual cash value” when it comes to making a claim for collision coverage, which covers damage that occurs to your motorcycle. It is my understanding that Rider will reimburse you the full amount it would take to repurchase the same motorcycle you are operating at the time of the accident if you bought your motorcycle new and have owned it for less than one year. I am uncertain as to how they handle accessories, but in the one situation I had, my client was reimbursed the full purchase price instead of what would normally be a depreciated value of at least 20-25% less than the price of a new motorcycle. Obviously my client, who did not even know he had this benefit, was ecstatic when I told him about this feature. Although there may be other insurance companies who offer this option, this is the first time that I had run into it and thought it worthwhile to report on. I have also seen some very reasonable quotes from Rider lately, so combined with this feature, in my mind this makes them a worthwhile competitor in the ever increasing number of insurance companies that are now writing motorcycle policies. Does this mean that Rider is the “best” insurance company???? Well, there are just too many insurance companies for me to make that statement. However, inasmuch as most major companies have begun to write motorcycle policies, we all have more choices and the increased competition, should eventually force premiums down for all of us. Lastly, I recently came across an excellent website sponsored by the PA DMV called “livefreeridealive.com”. Rather than going into everything it contains, I suggest that you spend a few minutes exploring the site as there is a great deal of information along with some pretty cool videos that I think you will find interesting. I hope you find this information informative and if you would like additional information on this topic, or any other, I can always be reached at LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com or 1-888-CYCLE-LAW (1-888-292-5352). Sincerely, LEE D. GABER, Esquire The one and only, “Cycle Attorney”

If you notice over browning after 30 minutes, reduce heat to 350 degrees F . Serve warm, or at room temperature.

“Cages & Cycles” IT’S CALLED CRUISE NIGHT

All types of Bikes, Cars, and Trucks were welcomed at the Glenview Alicia Alliance Church Biker Ministry Cruise Night. This car and cycle show was held in Glen Rock on August 21st. A rain date was scheduled, but not necessary. For the three hours this show took place, the lot filled up quickly. Door prizes, cycle & car prizes, free food and drinks was a great way to spend a summer evening. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the registration was also FREE.

The Simple Life ~by Sorez The Scribe A decent job to pay the bills A ride to call my own A righteous ol’ lady waiting for me Whenever I get home An open road with cagers few On a brisk cold sunny day An open door with welcoming arms And a warm embrace A moonlit highway A fresh paved road Another gear up on the throttle The simple life is the one I live As long as there’s roads to be traveled
