Politics Biker Style

by Charles Umbenhaur A.B.A.T.E.

Politics Biker Style By Charles Umbenhauer I have been at the motorcyclist’s rights game for three decades. I can also say that I have done it quite successfully. We modified our helmet law in 2003 and we have not had any serious attempts to reinstate a mandatory helmet law for all riders. As I continue to contact legislators in an effort to gather information for this years Voters Guide, I still have not detected any interest in revisiting the helmet issue here in Pennsylvania. I recently read that the Governor of Missouri vetoed their most recent helmet repeal bill. In 1999 Missouri was also successful in lobbying a helmet bill through the Legislature and onto the desk of then Governor Mel Carnahan who also vetoed that bill. I can only imagine what the frustration level in Missouri is after having to rebound once here from a veto. It has been said and I will certainly concur with the fact that any real threat of a helmet law is going to come at the Federal level. Today, I had something come across my desk about a workshop that was to be held in late August in Washington DC to develop a national strategy on highway safety to focus on identifying and creating opportunities for changing our highway safety culture. There was quite a bit of chatter about motorcycle issues and helmets. Here’s what they say… “The use of a compliant helmet has been proven as the most effective means of preventing serious head injury and death in a motorcycle crash. States pass and repeal laws requiring helmet use, largely based upon the EFFECTIVENESS OF VARIOUS LOBBYIST rather than on the merits of the legislation. Riders freedom to choose whether to wear a helmet must be measured against the social cost of caring for riders who are seriously injured and permanently disabled in crashes when such disabilities could have been prevented by helmet use. Their costs affect insurance premiums and health care costs for everyone. Thus, raising the issue of mandated helmet use to the national level may overcome the burden faced by state legislators, and allow for a comprehensive level of protection unaffected by geographic boundaries. This, alone, may be the single most effective means of reducing motorcyclist’s fatalities in America.”

health costs are attributable to motor vehicle accidents, and the cost associated with the treatment of motorcyclists injuries account for less than 0.001 % of total US health care cost. Only a portion of that less than 0.001 % cost is attributable to unhelmeted motorcyclists, and the majority of that cost is paid by privately purchased health insurance. What remains, spread across the taxpayer base- which includes millions of taxpaying motorcyclists- is insignificant.” So, let me remind you that ABATE of PA is a motorcycle rights organization that defends your rights at the state level. We need to start reinforcing the support that is available to us through the American Motorcyclist Association and the Motorcycle Riders Foundation which both maintain offices in Washington, DC and actively work to protect the rights of America’s motorcyclists. That means, you have to dig into your pocket and pay some dues. Just like us they can’t operate on a shoestring. You can go online at the ABATE website and click on Links and you will be able to go to both of these organizations and join! Trust me; there are dark clouds on the horizon. Let’s not wait until the last minute and hope that we will be able to mount a defense. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation will be having their annual Meeting of the Minds on September 25 and 26 in Peoria Illinois. ABATE of PA is sending four representatives and a contribution of $5,000 in support of the MRF. The conference is open to anyone who is interested so if you have the time and the bucks, it might be in your best interest to check it out.

Learn to Play Winning Blackjack #101

For those who are not aware, the State of Pennsylvania will soon be offering table games at their Casino’s. One of the most popular table games at Casinos today is BlackJack. Although it seems to be a simple game, it is not. The house has the mathematical edge and you need to known how to approach each hand to even the odds. To help those of you who are looking forward to the table games to learn the skills and tricks of the trade,we will be featuring one article each month dealing with a different part of the game. Stay with it and in no time you’ll be playing like a PRO. For past articles or more info contact Blackjack101@FLBPA.com

Values of the Cards

Part 3

•An Ace can count as either 1 or 11, as explained below. •The cards from 2 through 9 are valued at their face value. •The 10, Jack, Queen, and King are all valued at 10. The suits of the cards do not have any meaning in the game. The value of a hand is simply the sum of the point counts of each card in the hand. For example, a hand containing (5,7,9) has the value of 21. The Ace can be counted as either 1 or 11. You need not specify which value the Ace has. It’s assumed to always have the value that makes the best hand. An example will illustrate: Suppose that you have the beginning hand (Ace, 6). This hand can be either 7 or 17. If you stop there, it will be 17. Let’s assume that you draw another card to the hand and now have (Ace, 6, 3). Your total hand is now 20, counting the Ace as 11. Let’s backtrack and assume that you had instead drawn a third card which was an 8. The hand is now (Ace, 6, 8) which totals 15. Notice that now the Ace must be counted as only 1 to avoid going over 21. A hand that contains an Ace is called a “soft” total if the Ace can be counted as either 1 or 11 without the total going over 21. For example (Ace, 6) is a soft 17. The description stems from the fact that the player can always draw another card to a soft total with no danger of “busting” by going over 21. The hand (Ace,6,10) on the other hand is a “hard” 17, since now the Ace must be counted as only 1, again because counting it as 11 would make the hand go over 21. The Deal of the Cards Once all the bets are made, the dealer will deal the cards to the players. He’ll make two passes around the table starting at his left (your right) so that the players and the dealer have two cards each. The dealer will flip one of his cards over, exposing its value. In the shoe games, the players cards will be dealt face-up, and the players are not allowed to touch the cards. If you’re just beginning, you’ll probably want to start at the shoe game where you don’t have to worry about handling the cards. In the hand-held games, the player’s cards are dealt face down, and the players pick up the cards. When handling the cards in a hand-held game, here are a few important things to re-

member. •You are only allowed to touch the cards with one hand. If you’re a poker player, this can take some effort to break old habits! •You must keep the cards over the table. •Any additional cards that the dealer subsequently deals to your hand must be left on the table, not added to the cards in your hand. Once the cards are dealt play proceeds around the table, starting at the first seat to the dealer’s left, also called first base. Each player in turn indicates to the dealer how he wishes to play the hand. The various player decisions are covered in their own section below. After each player has finished his hand, the dealer will complete his hand, and then pay or collect the player bets. How the Dealer Plays His Hand The dealer must play his hand in a specific way, with no choices allowed. There are two popular rule variations that determine what total the dealer must draw to. In any given casino, you can tell which rule is in effect by looking at the blackjack tabletop. It should be clearly labeled with one of these rules: •“Dealer stands on all 17s”: In this case, the dealer must continue to take cards (“hit”) until his total is 17 or greater. An Ace in the dealer’s hand is always counted as 11 if possible without the dealer going over 21. For example, (Ace,8) would be 19 and the dealer would stop drawing cards (“stand”). Also, (Ace,6) is 17 and again the dealer will stand. (Ace,5) is only 16, so the dealer would hit. He will continue to draw cards until the hand’s value is 17 or more. For example, (Ace,5,7) is only 13 so he hits again. (Ace,5,7,5) makes 18 so he would stop (“stand”) at that point. •“Dealer hits soft 17”: Some casinos use this rule variation instead. This rule is identical except for what happens when the dealer has a soft total of 17. Hands such as (Ace,6), (Ace,5,Ace), and (Ace, 2, 4) are all examples of soft 17. The dealer hits these hands, and stands on soft 18 or higher, or hard 17 or higher. When this rule is used, the house advantage against the players is slightly increased. The dealer has no choices to make in the play of his hand. He must simply hit until he reaches at least 17 or busts by going over 21. Next month

HUMOR IN THE FAST LANE

Compiled by the Chief

All jokes are submitted by our readers. We dont know where they came from or who wrote them. Just enjoy!!!

Why Italians pass their handguns down through the family. An old Italian man is dying. He calls his grandson to his bedside... “ Guido, I wan’ you lissina me. I wan’ you to take-a my chrome plated .38 revolver so you will always remember me.” “But grandpa, I really don’t like guns. How about you leave me your Rolex watch instead?” “You lissina me, boy. Somma day you gonna be runna da business, you gonna have a beautiful wife, lotsa money, a big-a home and maybe a couple of bambinos. Somma day you gonna come-a home and maybe finda you wife inna bed with another man... Whatta you gonna do then? Pointa to you watch and say, ‘Time’s Up’?”

A little guy is sitting at the bar staring at his drink when a large, trouble-making biker steps up next to him, grabs his drink and gulps it down in one swig. “Well, whatcha gonna do about it?” he says, menacingly, as the little guy bursts into tears.“Come on, man,” the biker says, “I didn’t think you’d CRY. I can’t stand to see a man crying.”“This is the worst day of my life,” says the little guy.“I’m a complete failure. I was late to a meeting, and my boss fired me. When I went to the parking lot, I found my car stolen, and I don’t have any insurance, I left my wallet in the cab I took home. I found my wife in bed with the gardener and then my dog bit me.“So I came to this bar to work up the courage to put an end to it all. I buy a drink, I drop a capsule in and sit here watching the poison dissolve; then a wise guy like you shows up and drinks the whole thing!” Charlie was installing a new door and found that one of the hinges was missing. He asked his wife Mary if she would go to Home Depot and pick up a hinge. Mary agreed to go. While she was waiting for the manager to finish serving a customer, her eye caught a beautiful bathroom faucet. When the manager was finished, Mary asked him, “How much is that faucet?”The manager replied, “That’s a gold plated faucet and the price is $500.00.Mary exclaimed, “My goodness, that is a very expensive faucet. It’s certainly out of my price bracket.” She then proceeded to describe the hinge that Charlie had sent her to buy.The manager said that he had them in stock and went into the storeroom to get one. From the storeroom the manager yelled. “Ma’am, do you wanna screw for the hinge?” Mary paused for a moment and then shouted Page 18

back, “No, but I will for the faucet.” Little Larry attended a horse auction with his father. He watched as his father moved from horse to horse, running his hands up and down the horse’s legs and rump, and chest. After a few minutes, Larry asked, ‘Dad, why are you doing that?’ His father replied, ‘Because when I’m buying horses, I have to make sure that they are healthy and in good shape before I buy. Larry, looking worried, said, ‘Dad, I think the UPS guy wants to buy Mom ...

One morning, the husband returns the boat to their lakeside cottage after several hours of fishing and decides to take a nap. Although not familiar with the lake, the wife decides to take the boat out. She motors out a short distance, anchors, puts her feet up, And begins to read her book. The peace and solitude are magnificent. Along comes a Fish and Game Warden in his boat. He pulls up alongside the woman and says, ‘Good morning, Ma’am. What are you doing?’ Reading a book,’ she replies, (thinking, ‘Isn’t that obvious?’) ‘You’re in a Restricted Fishing Area,’ he informs her. ‘I’m sorry, officer, but I’m not fishing. I’m reading.’‘Yes, but I see you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment. I’ll have to take you in and write you up.’ ‘If you do that, I’ll have to charge you with sexual assault,’ says the woman. ‘But I haven’t even touched you,’ says the Game Warden. ‘That’s true, but you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment.’ ‘Have a nice day ma’am,’ and he left. I recently picked a new primary care doctor. After two visits and exhaustive Lab tests, he said I was doing ‘fairly well’ for my age. (I just turned 65.) A little concerned about that comment, I couldn’t resist asking him, ‘Do you think I’ll live to be 80?’ He asked, ‘Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer or wine?’ ‘Oh no,’ I replied.. ‘I’m not doing drugs, either!’ Then he asked, ‘Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs? ‘I said, ‘Not much... my former doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!’ ‘Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?’ ‘No, I don’t,’ I said. He asked, ‘Do you gamble, or have a lot of sex?’ ‘No,’ I said. He looked at me and said,... ‘Then, why do you even give a shit?”

Where Were You? Carlisle Bike Week

W

hat do you do on 102 acres? You walk around the annual summer Carlisle Bike Fest at the Carlisle fairgrounds. That's just what thousands of Bikers did the weekend of July 23-25. This is another bike event that falls on my list of the top three "must attend" motorcycle events. This show had plenty to feed your appetite for motorcycles, and much more. Tradition has it that my girlfriend, Angie, and I take the first day off from work, the Friday of the three day event. We saddle up and hit the road early in the morning to get that front field parking, because we always find ourselves back at our bikes to unload our goodies we purchased. Saturday, we invite our husbands and friends to join us, but Friday is our day to shop, and meet people for hours. It's an all day affair, and we look forward to it every year. Demo rides were popular. I watched Kawasaki, Yamaha, and Victory round up the riders and off they went. Page 20

Meanwhile, motorcross freestylists soared through the air performing their stunts and jumping 65’ gaps from ramp to ramp. FLBPA.com / September 2010

What’s a biker bash without a beautiful babe signing autographs? I first met the stunning Playboy model, Jesse Layne, back in March. Since then, I enjoy scouting (not stalking) her out at bike fests for my husband to pose with her. Seemed to be Steve’s biggest smile of that day. Speaking of Babes..... The GarageGirls, Sara Liberte, and Jody Perewitz were on hand to announce the winners of The Ultimate Biker Makeover. Contestants submitted their stories to the Garage-Girls for public voting. They were asked to explain why they thought they were deserving of an Ultimate Biker Makeover. This was extremely exciting for the Grand prize winner, David Bardwell of Texas City Texas, and Runner-up, Judy Reed of Battlecreek Michigan. Both winners were awarded a ton of prizes from a vast variety of sponsors. Prizes consisted of riding apparel from head to toe, cleaning products, new tires, and much much more. Visit www.garage-girls.com to get the complete story. Page 22

Inside the dealer mall there were plenty of cycles and clothing to shop for while trying to stay cool. The electric fans which were seen everywhere, just seemed to circulate the hot air around without any real good cause. Vendors outside were also set up with their own fans as well. Some even had “kiddie” pools under their tents. It got to be a silly site seeing the baby pool around one of “FLB’s own” bad ass boys of Keystone Choppers. Everyone desperately tried to stay cool. Saturday’s bike giveaway winner was Marianna Horowitz of Boiling Springs, PA. She won the 2010 Kawasaki Ninja 250R. Sunday’s bike giveaway winner was Galo & Rosalie Alvarez of Dover, PA. The 2010 Harley Davidson Sportster Iron 883 found a new home in Dover. The swap meet area is always full of interesting items for more than just your rides. I get a kick out of the guys that dash from stand to stand rattling off “hey man, do you have...” or “I’m looking for....” Hunting handle bars to finding fenders, the rows of vendors made it possible to find your treasured parts. I’m a lucky lady to have such a great bike event in my “back yard.” It’s a short ride from York to Carlisle. My calendar is marked for next year. Why not mark yours too! Thank you to the Carlisle Events staff. It was another awesome fun fest! www.carlisleevents.com See You in the Fast Lane! Alicia “BBA” Helfrich York

MOOD OF THE MOMENT. Yeah, I’ve been talking gloom and doom about Pluto in Capricorn for years now and for months Saturn and Uranus have been square. It has all been happening and everything is right on schedule. It is Pluto time, but there are other sides of Pluto I would like to talk about. Pluto has to do with Transformation. Osho was a Pluto Master and most sannyasins have strong Pluto aspects in their charts. This energy is not a stranger to us and we are equipped to ‘handle it’, as much as anyone can, and to use it in the best possible way. Pluto also has to do with archaeology, war, crisis, death, terrorism, atomic bombs, oil and anything underground. These energies are all connected and the best possible archaeological sites are graveyards and where mass destruction has happened before. Discovery of an 18th Century sailing ship beneath the debris of the World Trade Center is incredibly archetypal. Profound new discovery of something very old will be made and maybe finally, finally we will have evidence of the world civilization that came before us. ARIES. Harmony on the outside with others or harmony on the inside within yourself. It’s a choice. Do your thing or do your duty. Run free with the wind blowing in your hair or get a haircut and look respectable. This is a time of dilemma between the ‘I’ and the ‘We’. You may feel stuck in your relationship now or take it for granted. There is a duality of feelings between heaviness and restless anticipation to expand. You may withdraw into your aloneness or unconsciously have an argument to break the tie TAURUS. You are genetically engineered to be comfortable and stable. But Now is not the time. Now is a Mars transit two different ways. It is about energy and adrenaline, action and adventure, power and passion. It is the primeval kundalini energy that makes life happen and the body to move. In relationship, it is about the pursuit with passion or flight or fight. In your work, you have the energy to get things done. In your spiritual life, it is good to do catharsis or moving meditation. Good to not move any part of your body any faster than you can stay aware. GEMINI. Unexpected, unpredictable, unknown and unexplained in-the-moment zen kind of time for you now. Nothing bad or painful particularly. Not even confusing. Nothing you have to be prepared for. Changes just speed up, that’s all. It is like someone pressed the button on the washing machine of your life that says “Spin and Tumble”. Nothing you have to solve. Just respond to what appeals to you and ignore or dodge the rest. Whatever you put your hands on now tends to slip and disappear through your fingers.

Page 24

LIBRA.. Sociability, charm and compromise are your hallmark and none of that is going to happen at this time. Saturn transit in Libra and a feeling to withdraw into yourself and be alone for awhile. Uranus opposite and relationships with others becomes unpredictable and everybody do their own thing. Pluto square all of this and it throws the spice of intensity and urgency into the whole puzzle. The paradox is that you will have lots of invitations to come out and play, but maybe there is a piece of work you want to do instead. SCORPIO. Back in the saddle again. From a feeling of inertia and being stuck in invisible mud to a feeling of the river flows again and the fruit of life is within your grasp to be picked. Mars transit in Scorpio one month a year gives you the energy to go and get whatever it is that you want. Venus transit in Scorpio means you won’t step on someone else’s toes to get it. Passion and romance are at a peak at this time and you may find yourself a little bit magnetically irresistible. SAGITTARIUS. It is rather unusual, but nothing happens for you during this time. Nothing happens to you, for you, at you, with you, under you or above. It is rather remarkable really. It has never happened before. No threat, no promise. No pain, no pleasure. No demanding, no delivery. No sorrow, no ecstasy. No awareness, no understanding, no ignorance. No arguments, no agreements, no promises. Nothing happens. Nothing. Like a ghost that doesn’t know it is a ghost, you pass through everything. Amazing.

CANCER. Security and attachment are correct for you, but how to do that in a changing world? Saturn and Uranus square Cancer now and Pluto opposition for many years to come. You are in for the long haul. It is going to take some time because the changes happening inside you now are to be permanent and profound. It is the final and most significant step in your evolution. It has to do with being in your center in the center of the cyclone and always, always feeling the presence of yourself. That is what attachment really is. LEO. The thing about you and money is that you are one of the few people who know how to spend it and what to use it for. Money is codified experience. Money is the ticket to get through the door of where you want to go. And with Uranus/Jupiter on the cusp of your solar 9th House, maybe you want to go somewhere far, exotic, fulfilling, different than you have been before. It is a good time for a long trip to expand your mind and consciousness. Go somewhere you have never been. Something different is the key.

CAPRICORN. Well, my friend, to be honest and true and to give the most practical advice that I can, it is a good time to bend over and kiss your sweet ass goodbye. Existence has played a good joke on you. You are genetically programmed to organize things into efficient structures that will last the eons of time. Yet, Existence itself is transitory, changing and nothing survives for very long. Most life on Earth is wiped out every 27 million years anyway. The best thing you can do is take care of yourself

VIRGO. Happy Birthday Beloved and many, many more. Now is the time to learn as much as you can so you can forget it all later when Neptune transit begins next year. People think knowledge and learning is a cumulative process that goes on and on until clarity is achieved. Not really. Clarity is not achieved until you drop the mind and you have to have something to drop. It is the dropping that gives you clarity, not knowing more and more. But you have to know more and more so that the dropping makes a bigger bang.

PISCES. There comes a time next year when you just don’t care about money anymore. It is just not on your mind. You have to write notes to yourself to remember to think about it as just one of those necessities that has to be done. The subject becomes the gap, the scotoma, the blind spot in your thoughts. That is why this is a good time to build yourself a nest egg and to be busy at your work to make as much of it as you can. The stars are right and the force is with you. It happens in unusual and unexpected ways.

AQUARIUS. It is your nature to be cool, calm, and detached, but this Neptune transit you have been going through since 1998 might have changed all of that. There has been a kind of swimming in the ocean of feelings of the collective unconscious and your intuitions are stronger than ever. So far it has been a generalized vague energy hard to define. Now, as the outside world becomes more clear, the paradox is the energy still turns to the inside world, but in a more intense and focused way with purpose and determination.

Where Were You? Thunder in the Valley® Roars Through Johnstown

T

he 13th annual Thunder in the Valley took place in beautiful downtown Johnstown, PA on June 24th through the 27th. During the four days of this nationally known rally, bikers flooded the streets of Johnstown from all over the country, with visitors from as far away as California. Visitors even enjoyed free live music, foods from vendors from across the state, and of course the abundance of motorcycle gear and accessories. Some of the bands that preformed at this years rally included the ever popular Mini Kiss, who just recently stared in a nation wide Dr. Pepper commercial with KISS. Other bands that drew crowds to the area included the only officially sanctioned Blues Brothers, The Stickers, The Connipitions, The Michael O’Brien Band, and Full Kilt. These and other bands rocked the 200,000 plus crowds that attended the rally over the four days. To feature each band individually, three stages were constructed at the Biker Mall, Train Station, and Central Park gazebo. Other attractions that drew crowds at this years rally included a daredevil stunt show preformed by the American Hell Riders Wall of Death, which features the world’s steepest race track, and a full sized wrestling ring featuring the wrestlers of AON wrestling. Thunder enthusiasts lined up for two parades over the course of the rally. The first parade that was held was the Hot Night/Cool Lights night parade that was held on Thursday June 24th to kick off the beginning of the rally. On Saturday the 26th The Thunder Grand Parade rolled down Main Street as bikers were able to showcase their bikes along side AON wrestling, The Blues Brothers, and Vintage Cars. For younger attendees, a children’s parade made its Fway the down Page 32 L B Pfrom A . c oCity m / Hall S e p all tem b eway r 20 1 0 to Central Park.

One fiery attraction that brought spicy food lovers to Thunder in the Valley was Biker Billy. A nationally known, four time best selling cook book author, guest of the Tonight show and Regis and Kelly, spiced up the streets of Johnstown with this fiery cooking demonstrations. For bikers who were in the market for a new ride, patrons were able to test ride select models of Yamaha and Cam-AM Spyder and Kymco bikes. Bikers who had brought their own motorcycle could visit vendors who specialized in custom parts, lighting and accessories. Other biker friendly vendors sold items which included leather goods, sunglasses, patches, jewelry and clothing. FLBPA.com / September 2010

While many people think that Thunder in the Valley is only held in the city, there are different locations that participate in Thunder in the Valley recognized events. Near by Windber played host to Windber Rumbles, the StarBoyz, and team Contraband Harley Stunt Riding. Ebensburg held Wheels and Wings, which is a festival that had a car and bike show and of course wings. Richland Fire Department had live music and a stunning fireworks show, while Green House Park hosted the A.B.A.T.E Official Welcome Party. All of the events and locations add to the amazing atmosphere that is Thunder. Visitors who chose to stay before and after Thunder were able to ride their motorcycles on the worlds Steepest and Slowest Vehicular Incline and view other attractions around Johnstown. Other attractions included the Flood Museum, The War Memorial, and the beautiful scenery which surrounds downtown Johnstown. Thunder in the Valley 2010 was a complete success. Every year more and more bikers flock to the area to see what all Thunder has in store. Mark you calendars for June 23-26, 2011! ASK THE ATTORNEY By: Lee D. Gaber, Esquire 1-888-CYCLE-LAW LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com Before discussing this month’s subject, I briefly want to clarify last month’s column wherein I compared the rates of four different insurance companies. Just so there is no confusion, currently, the law in Pennsylvania requires that every insurance company licensed and authorized to sell motor vehicle insurance, is required to allow the stacking of uninsured/underinsured motorist benefits. In other words, if you have more than one vehicle, whether it be a motorcycle or an automobile, on a single policy of insurance, you are entitled to stack the uninsured/underinsured motorists benefits. The only way to give up this right is to sign a waiver indicating that you wish to reject the ability to stack the coverages. Currently “stacking” is only an issue when you have two separate insurance companies; one insuring your motorcycle, and one insuring your automobiles or, you are insured with one company, but they have written separate polices for your vehicles. In these cases, almost all automobile policies that I have read, prohibit you from stacking the automobile coverage on top of any uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage you may have on your motorcycle insurance policy. This is generally the case even if both of your policies indicate that you have selected the stacking option. This prohibition on stacking these coverages, if your vehicles are insured with two different insurance companies, has been upheld by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. This brings me to this months specific column question – Can I stack my automobile coverages on top of my motorcycle coverages if all of my vehicles are insured with the same insurance company, even though my insurance carrier choose to write two separate policies of insurance placing my automobile(s) on one policy, and my motorcycle(s) on another? The only company I am currently aware of that allows “stacking” in this situation is State Farm. However, this issue is currently pending in front of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, under the caption GEICO v. Ayers. Recently the Supreme Court agreed to review the Superior Court of Pennsylvania’s decision, wherein the Superior Court upheld the prohibition of stacking automobile insurance onto motorcycle insurance even though all of the vehicles were insured with the same company and both policies indicated that the stacking option was chosen by Mr. Ayers. In this case, the Superior Court allowed GEICO to rely upon the “household exclusion”, written into their automobile policy to disallow Mr. Ayers, who was injured while operating his motorcycle, to stack his automobile benefits on top of his motorcycles’ underinsured motorist benefits. Had GEICO chosen to place all of Mr. Ayers vehicles onto one policy, there wouldn’t have been any question that he would have been able to stack the coverages. Although it is uncertain how the Supreme Court will rule, their decision is of great consequence to many of my clients/readers, especially these days when the national companies like GEICO, Allstate, Progressive, etc., are practically tripping over themselves to gain a bigger share of the motorcycle insurance business. As a result, I am beginning to see more client’s who have both their automobiles and their motorcycles insured with the same company, as opposed to having two separate companies. Given the increasing amount of advertising these companies are investing in, I expect the trend toward consolidation of insurance policies with one company to increase. Therefore, I am hoping that the Court rules in favor of Mr. Ayers and allows for the stacking of automobile and motorcycle policies written with the same company, even if they are placed onto two separate polices. This would obviously be of great benefit to anyone seriously injured by another who is either uninsured, or underinsured. I hope you find this information informative and if you would like additional information on this topic, or any other, I can always be reached at LeeGaber@cycleattorney.com or 1-888-CYCLE-LAW
