FAUVE ISSUE 03

Page 1

editor’s note Producing the first two issues of Fauve Magazine was a real initiation process and this edition, the third, feels like just the beginning. Feedback continues to be incredibly positive, and people’s responses directly reflect the motivation for bringing Fauve to print. Each issue of Fauve is an invitation to taste the rich creative juice that flows through and around Indonesia, and beyond the bubble. I do not perceive Fauve to ever become static, or fixed to a formulated model, I hope it will continue to reveal itself through each new issue. If Fauve can begin to inspire people to enjoy their lifestyle, their fashions, their passions, their environment… and ultimately themselves, then it’s serving its intended purpose.

Fauve Magazine will continue to unfold and change through 2012, but some things will stay the same. It will always be free, although you can subscribe and Fauve will be posted to you. Fauve will continue to be graphically enhanced, integral, interactive and eclectic and the simplicity supports the diversity of expression evident in each new edition. A big thanks you to everybody who has contributed so far, in so many different ways. It’s been an absolute pleasure to open the portal of this publication, to share and meet with so many on this journey, and to be witnessing the process unfolds. Hoping you enjoy engaging Fauve.

Producing each edition of Fauve Magazine allows me to find new and unique ways of being Fauve, challenges turn into profound learning curves and every issue has been an entirely different journey to direct.

A photographer, graphic designer & a mum! she is a “do it all”

by YONI

Born in Jakarta but raised in Sri Lanka, Rachel Mantiri was already a well traveled girl before she moved to Bali in 2011. Originally a Graphic Designer, she tried her luck in Photography and is doing this with much success. I had the pleasure of meeting her at Zen Garden where she showed me her work and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised in how talented this young woman is. Why did you made the move from Graphic Designer to photography? After I finished my high school in Sri Lanka, I moved to Singapore where I studied Visual Communications and start working as a Graphic Designer for a fashion magazine called ‘Catalog’. I have always been interested in Art and Digital Composing but it was at that magazine that I got interested in the world of fashion photography. One day I borrowed my father’s camera and start shooting randomly and felt great passion for it but I am still working as a Graphic Designer. What is it that makes you interested in photography? When I moved to Bali after 6 years in Singapore I lost my camera at the beach and with this my interest for a while. At that time I worked for I-Mag as a Graphic Designer and there my passion for photography gradually grew again as they do a lot of photo shoots. This made me feel like shooting again and being a photographer so I bought a new camera. I have always admired the outcome of photos especially after editing. When I bought my first camera from a client I enjoyed shooting because you can make the world look surreal and not so much of what you see. Is that what makes you different from other photographers? I don’t like to be seen as a regular photographer. In my opinion, most photographers prefer to capture images as close to the real thing. I mix my photos with graphic illustration and transform it into an artwork. Fashion

photography is a whole new thing for me, my first job was for a fashion brand called Lulu Yasmine and I had so much fun during that shoot that I got the taste for it and now I want more. As you mentioned before, you are still a Graphic Designer. That must take up a lot of your time right? Yes, I am still working as a Graphic Designer i’ve set up my commercial design services under the name “B-Project”. Where I built websites for companies and help with their branding by designing logo’s like I am doing now for Fauve Magazine. But the one compliments the other as I combine Graphic Designs with Photography. Talking about time, you are a brand new mum, how do you manage your time with a baby and all? Actually, my son is the driving force behind my career, without him I would never had the courage to be a freelancer. It pushed me in being independent and set my own rules. It learned me how to manage my time and my son learned me how to be a better person. It is hard at times but it’s also a good challenge and challenge is fun. Any plans for the future? Many! But right now i’ve set up my freelance design business and intend to run a proper design agency. While also building my portfolio for photography. Luckily I met make-up artist and artistic director Julhenry at the shoot of Lulu Yasmine, he is helping me to become a better fashion photographer and helps me to built my confidence as these kind of shoots are still new to me. We at Fauve Magazine would like to wish Rachel all the best and good luck for her career and everything that she deserves which can only be good things. rachel.mantiri@gmail.com www.b-project.asia www.moodscape.tumblr.com 17

Your legs are the pillars that hold your body; they take you around, running or dancing. But it is not easy to have beautiful legs, they require great care and there are several elements that can alter their appearance and health. Many women experience swelling, especially during hot weather and during pregnancy. Often this heaviness is caused by fluid retention and poor circulation. This last one is also a cause of varicose veins, which can become very painful as well as unsightly. The dry skin is another ongoing battle. Many women find it difficult to get a skin soft and hydrated in this part of the body. The hair may be a cause of this difficulty, because most hair removal methods are not very delicate with skin. Once the hair returns, the smoothness and softness of the skin disappears. Finally, one of the greatest enemies of the lower extremities of women is cellulite, which seems to haunt women since adolescence. As we can see, your legs deserve great attention! Fighting cellulites helps to mitigate most of the other issues and following some guidelines and routines can help to reduce these effects.

28

Diet is one of major factors in prevention. Maintaining a natural diet and reduced in salt content is important, since it favors the retention and hinder blood circulation flowing. Animal fats are also not desirable because they increase the viscosity of blood. You can start adding to your diet foods rich in potassium. Potassium, unlike sodium, has the property to remove the water. FRUITS & VEGETABLES: Avocado, Banana, Dates, Kiwi, Mango, Melon, Orange, Papaya, Artichoke, Beetroot, Mustard, Turnip greens, Spinach, Potato, Pumpkin, Tomato, Zucchini OTHERS: Chocolate, Cocoa, Lentils, Milk, Nuts, Peanuts, Yogurt Cellulite occurs when fat cells that are responsible for storing fat grow abnormally, obstructing the blood circulation, tissue oxygenation and elimination of toxins. As a short term plan against cellulite, you should start changing a bit your lifestyle and take good care of your diet. Start cleaning your body from the inside eliminating toxins that your body does not need. You can include in your diet herbal teas, fruit juices and vegetables and remove alcohol and carbonated drinks, coffee and any processed food or drink that has artificial preservatives. Finally, avoiding animal fats is also important.

This is a Decalogue with some other tips that can help to improve your plan: 1. By midmorning, drink three tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar diluted in half a glass of water. 2. It is also advisable to eat or drink citrus juices (lemon, oranges, grapefruit, etc) 3. Reduce salt intake, it makes your body retain fluids. 4. Avoid crossing your legs when sitting and do not wear very tight clothes, when sitting, does not help blood circulation. 5. You can take fresh Pineapple in the morning and evening, as it has few calories and is rich in bromelain, an enzyme that promotes the absorption of proteins preventing the formation of cellulite. 6. Mix 7 tablespoons of Coconut oil, 7 drops of Lemon oil and 1 tablespoon of Grapefruit juice. Apply to the area with cellulite through massage 3 times per week. 7. Doing aerobics or cardiovascular for 30 minutes at least three times a week. It is also advisable to run, swim, bike or any exercise that speeds the metabolism.

Finally, Zen Garden in Bali suggests a soup and salad that will help from inside at the same time that your palate enjoys: CELLULITE BOOSTER: Juice in blender 1 cucumber, 1 lemon and 1 tablespoon honey 3 times a day (the first fasting at 7:00 am, the second at 11:00 am, the third at 5:00 pm) for one week. PUMPKIN & APPLE SOUP: 2 cups cooked pumpkin + 1 apple + 1 small onion + 1 cup vegetable stock or water + ½ cup milk or soy milk + ½ teaspoon curry powder + 1 clove garlic + olive oil + salt & pepper to taste Chop the onion finely and sauté in a large pot with a tablespoon of olive oil, when transparent add the apple previously peeled and the crushed garlic clove. Then add the half teaspoon of curry and cook for a couple of minutes. Add the cooked squash and cup vegetable broth or cooking water. Mix everything in a blender until it becomes creamy, add the milk and season with salt and pepper to taste. balizengarden@gmail.com Facebook @ Zen Garden Bali

8. Drink plenty of water. 9. Place a blanket or pillow under the mattress, sleeping with your legs slightly elevated promotes blood circulation. 10. Dry skin brushing, it promotes blood flow. Use a natural bristle brush; go over the affected areas with gentle circular movements. Homemade cream for cellulite: Caffeine would fight cellulite by helping to redistribute the cells; it also strengthens the veins reducing varicose ones. The sugar will also make a soft scrub on your skin. Ingredients: 1 & ½ cups of brown sugar + ¼ cup freshly used coffee grounds + ¾ cup olive oil Mix everything and massage legs with the mixture 3 times per week. If stored in a tightly sealed bottle, it can last for two weeks. For good smell, you can add 2 teaspoons of cocoa powder. Remedy for Varicose veins: Place a few drops of tea tree oil on a cloth dampened with cold water and then applied over the inflamed area. Infusions of rosemary honey and elderflowers have also soothing properties for varicose veins. Remedy for Swelling legs: This mixture of oils is ideal for a gentle massage every day. 100 ml of virgin olive oil or almond oil + 30 drops Cypress oil + 20 drops of Rosemary oil + 10 drops of Geranium oil + 10 drops of Lavender oil + 5 drops of Peppermint oil. 29

So there I was at Petitenget Café celebrating the Independence of Katie Holmes with my two besties, sipping an Americano with vodka, and in walked THAT chick. We used to be bff’s, but it was one of those sick twisted relationships where I tried unsuccessfully to get her to break up with the married man she was dating and we talked about her and how she so wasn’t fat (she was and is) waaay more than we ever talked about me. A year ago when my clothing brand went huge in Australia she got jealous and made up a reason to hate me and spread a bunch of uncreative and unfun lies. I was so betrayed and then I was so over it. No more charity casesif someone can’t get it together, that’s their problem! My astrologist Mariana said it was because Venus opposition Chiron in my 5th started the day I had to go into Kuta for a business meeting - I must have picked up some majorly trashy energy. So after ignoring THAT chick’s presence and enjoying my five Americanos with vodka with my girlfriends, I went home and burned

some cleansing sage, put a double-terminated quartz on my third eye chakra and really thought about everything going on in Bali at the moment. Women sticking together is as likely as Tom Cruise coming out of the closet. And since neither of those things are going to happen in this universe, I just wish bitches could find a real reason to hate. I mean, I can be a know-it-all-have-it-all ego sized-2 bitch, why not hate me for that instead of making shit up. Ladies have to realize that no-one and nothing is going to make you happy- it’s an inside job. That’s why I moved from my little town in Nevada to the big city of Los Angeles, then came to Bali. Not to find myself, but just to BE. Plus have you tried the oxygen facials at the St. Regis? When I got back to Bali from my boob job in Thailand last month, I realized I had been missing out on a LOT. I felt so rejuvenated- I spent a week in a Thai Ashram after the swelling went down and I cried about my dad and that time he forgot my 10th birthday and then denied it and then bought me a Volkswagen Jetta. That totally didn’t even make up for it, you can’t buy my love and c’mon, a Jetta? It just proves he doesn’t even know me, I am totally an Audi girl. Anyway, I came back to Bali and I was GLOWING and my boobs looked AMAZING, like a perfect C cup. Don’t tell anyone. But if people know, whatever. And I had totally lost 3 pounds, a fantastic side effect of meditating is that you forget to eat! Om shanti om! So what did I miss while I was away? Apparently some model from Krasnoarmeisktusk, Russia has been sleeping around while her husband is out of town. So fabulous if that’s their arrangement! They’re living the bohemian lifestyle, that’s what Bali is all about - I love couples finding their own “normal.” A certain owner of a certain Seminyak magazine has fini with one fantastic chameleon and started up with another exquisite muse. And not even any dramz in between, I kind of love it, so functional, so chic. In other news, Joel Houston of Hill Song United, a major Christian Rock band, showed up at From1Secret Gallery (owned by Yaz who never killed anybody!!!) with his Brazilian model girlfriend Esther. They were super charming and low-key, and bought a bunch of the more scandalous pieces of artwork OF COURSE. I hope Joel and Esther are waiting till marriage to fuck, or God is going to be totally pissed about both that and the nudie pics in the villa foyer.

So I love the new ass-toning machines at 3V Gym, and the classes make you sweat without looking like a monkey on a ceiling fan. And I heard that a certain Japanese gym freaked effed one of the new instructors - a great way to burn calories and practice some tantra. I wonder if he wore a heart rate monitor? Ok, I have reliable source that says a certain Russian lass slept with a French pro surfer. He was from Rip Curl, I think? I can’t keep the surf brands straight, they make you look like a tourist from Dallas. Anyway what is the deal with pro surfers, can we please take a poll or something? Do they really fuck better than equally hot non-pro surfers? I’m confused. I tend to avoid pro-surfie types, they generally don’t have very good manners. Ugh! I’m not your mother or a hooker, although judging from your general conduct your mom totally knew how to work a pole. Professionally good-looking people, however, that’s different. Our very own Katie Stone, model, presenter, shining intellectual star and bubbly personality extraordinaire is moving to Jakarta to star in a feature film. Coming to a theater near you! Skinny Mongol was seen with a male model in Mint, hands down his pants, while the girlfriend wiled away, oblivious. The three of them would make such a cute couple! And at Zen Garden, one female and one male model, after splashing in the pool, went to the toilet together for 30 minutes. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t take 25 minutes to wash your hands… Right, so I forgot to introduce myself! I’m Shanti, and I’m your resident shaman. I’m here for questions you might have on how to live a chic bohemian lifestyle, so fire away! I’m also here to keep you up to date on everything juicy happening on the island, and how to make sense of the madness. How will you know if that snakeskin bag is boho chic or post-apocalyptic bleak? Does Karma Kandara recycle? If he doesn’t go down on you, does he really love you? Why are you with him in the first place? Who is being the bigger selfish cuntface, you or your bestie? What aromatherapy oils reduce cellulite AND expand your consciousness? I’m here to help. XOXO shanti.says@gmail.com

FROM bucharest to bali to vogue!

BY YONI International Model, Claudia Mirea was born and raised in Bucharest, Romania. Modeling wasn’t always her passion especially after her first experience. She even stopped for a while but to pick it up again when her agent told her that she was going to Milan. Lucky for all of us, the agent was very persuasive otherwise we would have missed out on all the beautiful photo’s that she helped creating. I had the pleasure of meeting Claudia and this is what transpired.

What do you think of this Fashion World? It’s exciting, especially in the beginning. There is always something new because fashion changes from season to season, although it can be very superficial as well. As a young girl you have to be careful with the people you are surrounding yourself with. It also matures you pretty fast. It can be a tough world and in my opinion, only the strongest will survive and get to the top.

You started modeling at a pretty ‘old’ age of 19, why did you decide to become a model? After high school I wanted a year off school before studying Psychology but I remember my mum telling me “if you don’t want to go to school this year young lady, you going to find yourself a job because I don’t want lazy bums around my house”. That made me think of what I wanted to do but I couldn’t come up with anything. One morning my mum had managed to get me a job at a cheap shoe store and that made me even think more as this is not the job I wanted to do. My boyfriend at that time introduced me to the modeling world and he told me that it might be a good way to spend my time. To be honest, in the beginning I was not sure as I don’t know this world and its unknown territory for me. I tried it for one month in my own country and then my agent, Romanian Model Georgia who owns Tres Jolie agency, suggested I should go for a short trip to Istanbul, this idea scared me a little bit as besides that I was new to this world it was also the first time I would leave my country. Finally, after support from my parents, I decided to give it a try but when I came back I must say I was pretty disappointed and told my agent that I wasn’t sure if I would want to continue working as a model. She then sent me to Milan which ended all of my fears, I started to enjoy it and make a living out of it, it’s the best thing that has happen to me.

You are now based in Bali, how do you like the modeling here? When I came to Bali for the first time last year, I met some friends who told me that modeling is quiet good here so with my second visit I intended to stay longer and signed myself with So Wanted Agency. Since then I have done a lot of photo shoots. My last campaign was for 69 Slam with fashion photographer Bianka and artistic director Jul, he’s my favorite little guy. I am not planning to be in Bali for a very long time but for now it’s my sweet, sunny home.

Before coming to Bali, you have traveled the world and worked for many designers. Who have you worked for? I have worked for many designers known and unknown, Emilio Pucci, Christian Dior, Valentino, Fila and for magazines such as Elle and Marie Claire.

You were recently on the cover of I-Mag, can you describe the feeling when you see yourself on a cover of a magazine? I remember that shoot very vivid, it was the Bonnie and Clyde shoot. First of all, I was very pleased that they chose me for that shoot, it was one of the best I had ever done, thanks to the creative team that was behind it and thanks to Cisco, the other model, we had great chemistry together. When you see the end result and the editor choose to put you on the cover that gives you great confidence as a model. It’s an amazing feeling. All that traveling and spending your days on the set can be very tiring, what is it that you do to unwind? Normally I like to spent time with my boyfriend but as I am single now I enjoy being on the beach. I have just been introduced to snorkeling and diving and I get the feeling that this will become my favorite ‘thing’ to do. Being with friends and family makes me feel good too. Live life with love and passion! That’s my motto because we will never be this young again.

HARD ROCK 41 and Still Rockin’ !!

If you love music, memorabilia, shop for merchandise, good food and great times, Hard Rock is the place! In 1971, two music-loving Americans founded the first Hard Rock Cafe in an old Rolls Royce showroom in London, and an icon was born. Four decades later, Hard Rock celebrates Founders’ Day (still true to) the brand’s core mantra “Love all – Serve All.” On Tuesday, June 14, 2012, Hard Rock Bali including; Hard Rock Hotel Bali, Hard Rock Cafe Bali and Hard Rock Radio Bali celebrated 41 years since the first day it was born. This is the time of the year when we get together as a family and party in pure hard rock style. On this day, to honor 41 community heroes from Bali’s Fire Brigade and 41 children from orphanage for street kids were invited to enjoy a burger bash and to release 41 turtles to their habitats. Hard Rock’s Burger Badge Bash is offered to police, firefighters, emergency medical technicians or other community servants in recognition of their dedication and service to the community. “On this 41st Anniversary of Founders’ Day, we look forward to celebrating with local heroes and all Hard Rock fans around the world. Today we will honor and serve those who serve and protect us everyday.” said Andrew Khoo, General Manager of Hard Rock Hotel Bali. In true spirit of Founder’s Day, Sara Wijayanto, an Indonesian rising star, performed at a foam party. She performed 4 songs and her voice is certainly as great as she looks. After the performance, Sara signed a guitar for Hard Rock Hotel’s memorabilia collection at Splash Bistro. Getting metaphysical with Swathimaa, Spiritual teacher & jewels Creator by KATIE

Our in depth discussion on Spirituality as a way of relating with ourselves within the constraints and challenges of our humanity, learning to discover and witness our “true self” and how that takes us to a deeper level of “being-ness” with ourselves and others. We journey through the berth of spiritual understanding today and the spiritual truths of our time. Can you tell me a little about your background? I was born in Berlin, attended international schools in Syria and Germany. I spent a long time in LA. However, my life has been in Asia more than 10 years. I lived in Penukonda, Southern India for 5 years, studying with one of the most remarkable, enlightened masters of our time. His name is Sri Kaleshwar. Meeting him was the greatest blessing of my life. Spirituality for me, up until maybe a year ago, was a non-factor in my life. I suppose you could say my connection to my own spirituality was severed. For me, it wasn’t so easy to draw a bridge. And yet, here you are today, exploring it. I believe for many the search for spirituality starts with the desire to know about yourself and/or the need to heal yourself. My journey started at a young age; I was only 11 years old and I wanted to know who I am, why I was here. Nobody could answer that but I knew I needed guidance. So, I spent a lot time in libraries reading books on psychology, philosophy, various religions, met visiting buddhist monks, talked with priests but none could explain the process of revealing that truth to myself. They all made it sound like it was a mystical, abstract, almost unattainable quest, realized by only a chosen few. I refused to believe that. It just didn’t feel true. During this time of my awakening, I also started having unexpected, spontaneous experiences, supernatural experiences, like lucid out-of-body experiences, I started seeing spirits and other things. It scared me at first as I didn’t know what was happening to me or why but somehow my perception of what we call ‘reality’

had expanded. I wasn’t doing drugs or anything. I wasn’t making this up in my head, I had proof. Now, it was an undeniable truth to me that there was something ‘more’ in us, and I was determined to find out what that is. I had a similar feeling growing up. This sense that there was more to the world I was encased in. I found out what I was really looking for was a way to relate to myself. Exactly my point. Having a relationship with yourself means becoming conscious of who you are and what you are not. Especially as a young person you are so easily influenced by family, society and what other people think you should do. You blindly trust they know what they are talking about and follow this ‘outer’ guidance until this deception grows so painful that you invite change. Ultimately, the best guidance system is our inner guide. That’s why it’s so important to encourage children early on to find their own voice, follow their heart and be their own person independent of parental expectations. People are starting to talk about all the issues today, regarding the distractions and busy-ness of life, the virtues that we value which seem skewed when drawn in parallel to what spirituality really means, which is to me ‘to just be’ is enough. And society and culture resist this idea madly. Yes, people are becoming keenly aware that a balance between the material and spiritual, inner world is necessary. But most people don’t trust yet that being ‘spiritual’ is something they can maintain or ‘be’ in the ‘real’ world. That’s why spirituality is still kind of treated like a tourism. Ubud is a perfect example. People come here to get away from the distractions and busy-ness and to dedicate time to change, to have the space to find clarity, healing and direction to navigate their life authentically, and to just be, like you said. But we need to maintain that sacred space in our everyday lives if we want to consciously co-creating our reality. 53

Segueing into Sexuality…. I had a plasticized version of what I thought sexuality was. Maybe it was using sex as a bargaining chip or as a means to get other needs met, but not really exploring it inside myself but what I could get from expressing sexuality outside of myself. Enjoying love and sex at the same time I find to be quite a complicated internal process. Yes, that’s a great topic. You’re a model, let’s take fashion and advertising as an example. They use young, attractive women bearing a lot of skin and basically screaming “sex!” with that post-coital look in their eyes to spark desire and get people to buy. Men buy because they want to have sex with that woman, women buy because they want to be that woman. Sexuality is used as manipulation to get what you want. Young women are taught these subliminal messages and then find success in implementing them. So, now they got the guy they want, using their sexual power, and sex becomes a form of pleasing and control. Has little to do with love, doesn’t it? Someone wrote, “Underneath the sense of abandonment lies the sense of invasion”. That need to please, but also that fear of invasion by the person your with. How can there not be fear, if your sexuality is not motivated by love? Sexuality from a spiritual perspective means two people, two souls are merging with each other and if they’re hearts are open, they can experience pure divine energy time and communicate on a very deep level. It’s an incredibly powerful experience. I think more than anything, women are scared and confused about their power. Having taken a spiritual path with your teacher, Sri Kaleshwar, in India, what is a lesson you can impart on how relationship, love and suffering unite? Well, staying on the subject of women and their power, what women don’t know is that their sexuality and the ability to give birth is what makes women 8 times more powerful than men. If a woman meditates for 1 hour, it takes a man one day of meditation to build the same of amount of energy in their soul. It’s true. Women have an extra “chakra” or energy center, called the Womb chakra that men don’t have. It’s the most powerful chakra of them all, a pure place of creation power. But it’s also the place where we hold our karmas and illusions. Sexual energy which we refer to as ‘Kama’ energy, is also the power behind our desires, it’s strong attachment energy. Our desires are often inspired by our illusions, and therefore can lead us on a path that turns to suffering. In other words, if we don’t get what we want, we suffer to the point of heartbreak. If women knew how to use, strengthen and purify their womb chakra, how to use their sexuality and how to use the union time with their partner, they could heal their negative karmas and heartbreak, heal their partners and relationships, even give birth to enlightened children. I’m not exaggerating. Women 54

could be of great service to humanity. This is a secret, ancient spiritual teaching my teacher revealed some years back from ancient palm leaf books. We call it the ‘Holy Womb Chakra process’, I also teach this in seminars and retreats. How do we change in relationships? First of all, in relationships, everyone needs to take responsibility for their own blocks. Blocks are habitual, energetic patterns i.e. unworthiness, fear, anger, selfishness, anxiety, impatience etc. You can’t change the other person, that is not your job. Everyone has blocks, and every person has to learn to handle them on their own. The relationships shouldn’t become the battleground of your blocks. When they come up, it’s better to walk away and be silent and deal with the pressure of your blocks in private, then to express them to your partner. I know that’s not easy, but it’s the best way. If you have honesty and good, open communication in your relationship, you can later express your internal struggles without emotion and drama. If you respect each other’s private time and support one another lovingly and patiently, both you and the relationship can grow together, without growing apart. How do we begin to relate to each other and ourselves in a healthier way? Intention is the key. Most people are in relationships because of their expectation of what they want out of it. People don’t think so much on what they want to give to the relationship. So you have selfish people that are more committed to their blocks and desires than to the love and happiness of the other person. That just doesn’t work. The ideal partnership is when you think more on the other person than yourself, giving them what makes them happy, giving them peace, letting them truly be at ‘home’ with you. And the other person having that same commitment to you. If the intention in a relationship is to serve, then the dynamics change. Then it’s not about trying to control or manipulate or worrying if they still love you. If you can seal that commitment you don’t have to act out of a place of fear. How do we learn to cope with or accept our so-called, “bad” qualities? Well, acceptance is the first step. Embracing yourself, and knowing, you are not your blocks. I think one reason we hold on to them so tightly is that we fear a loss of identity. If I’m not my blocks then who am I? If I’m not jealous, angry, afraid, judgmental, etc then who am I? We can’t imagine to just be love, peace and truth, it seems too hard. Too hard?! It’s too hard to be any other way. So the real question is, how do I change and release my blocks? In my experience, the most effective, lasting way is to energetically transform and diffuse them. In our tradition, we do that with the

repetition of sacred sound vibrations, specific mantra meditation processes that are designed to purify these blocks. It’s quite amazing how quickly people can heal and change in a beautiful way. What is the essential question we need to ask ourselves? “Who am I? What am I here to do? What is my purpose? “ How did you find a guru, a teacher, who could guide you on your spiritual path? When I was still living in LA, I became increasingly aware that I wasn’t living my highest purpose. The high life and parties became a distraction to the pain of not living my truth. I felt empty and unfulfilled. I knew spirituality was my calling, but had no idea how to sustain that or even start that. I was 24 and felt really lost. So, I made a deal with God and I offered something in exchange for being guided to my true path. Six months later, I found myself at the gates to an ashram in Southern India. Now, I didn’t consider myself exactly an ashram chick but upon entering the grounds, I instantly knew I was home. I was HOME! I finally had found what I had been looking for my entire life. The search was over. I had no idea who this guru was or what they were teaching there, but the deal was fulfilled. I had arrived. How did you begin teaching? My teacher, Sri Kaleshwar, gave me a little push. I was so inspired yet so terrified in the beginning. He sent me out from the ashram “to heal & teach as many people as possible” after my first year of studying with him. I had never healed someone and was terrified of speaking in front of people, let alone teaching the highest spiritual knowledge. I was a blond, 26-year old woman. Who would listen to me or come to me for healing? Well, my fears proved themselves wrong. It was the most natural, intuitive thing to me, once I actually did it. And many came and got healed. It was amazing to experience the energy during the healings, it was really miraculous what happened. I’m so grateful.

are considered natural power objects and he taught me the secret process to unlock and activate the full power of these Rudraksham. That’s why SHIVALOKA is real soul jewelry. You can’t find this kind of empowered sacred jewelry anywhere. You can feel the difference. How do you do mantras with Mala beads? Traditionally, a mala has 108 beads, with a 109th bead called the guru bead as the pendant. You don’t count that, and you never cross over that bead. You start at one end of the mala holding the first bead between your thumb and middle finger. You never use your index finger. Then you start mentally repeating the mantra. When you’re done you move your fingers to the next bead and repeat the mantra again, and so on. 108 repetitions is the minimum required dosage to creating change and healing. Correct pronunciation of the mantra is also very important to make sure you receive the full benefit of your practice. How did the idea of Shivaloka come to you? I was in Bali on a silent retreat and the vision came to me as I was meditating. I thought, wouldn’t it be great to create mala beads so beautiful and powerful that everybody would want to wear them. That everyone can benefit from their divine power, whether they believed in them or not. I don’t consider myself a designer but an expert on the energy. Each of our SHIVALOKA jewelry pieces has a specific power or benefit. You can choose by your intention, i.e. healing heartbreak, protecting from negativity, or creating peace of mind. I see many of our customers becoming soulfully attached to their SHIVALOKA jewelry. It makes people happy. What is the spiritual truth of our time? Life is short. Follow your Heart!

How did your jewelry line, Shivaloka, intersect with your spiritual journey that began in India? Our teachings are based on meditation with mantras, sacred formulas. We use malas (prayer rosaries) to count the repetition of mantras. I had a spiritual center in Hong Kong, and needed malas for my students to start their meditation practice. We used malas strung with Rudraksha seeds. In India it’s revered as a holy bead and is worn by saints and sadhus since ancient times. One of the knowledge systems I learned from my teacher in India was on natural and supernatural power objects. Rudraksham 55

ANjA I met Anja on a Wednesday evening at her house where she greeted me with a warm hug and a lovely smile. We had a long evening discussing many subjects and I was surprised to notice what a sensitive, kind and gentle person she is. We spoke about a lot of things including places she had visit, boy drama’s, childhood memories and most important, about her education.

by CLAUDIA Anja was born in a small village in Germany near ‘The Black Forest’ called Schwartwald where she grew up until the age of nineteen. Despite the fact that most friends of her age barely knew what to do next, she knew exactly what she wanted to become in her life, she decided that she wanted to move to Waldshut where she started studying at Klaus Boerrnert Univeristy, specializing in make-up and special effects for one year. After she finished her studies she volunteered to work at a french hair salon called ‘Mod’s’ in Karlsruhe, another city in Germany. She did this for one year and when that year was over she put all that she had learned into practice in the Stadttheater and Festpielhaus, both theathers in the german city of Baden–Baden. Here she did make-up for three years and worked with a lot of artists including opera singers, ballet dancers and actors. By the end of those three years she finally became qualified as a make-up artist. Realizing that the world has much more to give, she soon made her way towards fashion T.V. channels such as BBC and the german TV channel SWR as well as videoclips for german singers. After this, Anja lived in Basel in Switzerland and Strasbourg in France, where she worked as a freelancer for a few years. She then took one year off and went to Asia for a holiday with her sister. Here, Anja fell in love with Asia and decided to give it a chance. In her own words she said ‘Eight years ago I went to Thailand with my sister where i madly fall in love with Asia and its wonderful people. This convinced me and my sister to travel a little more, so after Thailand we went to the Philippines and then last stop was Bali’. Curious to know more, I started asking her all sorts of questions about her journey and this is what transpired. Describe yourself in five words: Creative, Sensitive, Confident, Ambitious, Secretive. What is the biggest mistake you have ever made in your life? I don’t believe people make mistakes . That word ‘mistake’ shouldn’t even exist. I personally have no regrets about my life. I just simply believe that everything happens for a reason. Going a bit through your work, tell me what you love about your it? Many things! First of all that I can be creative, it’s fun to play with many colors and thinking about that, a face of a person feels like a canvas of a painter so it’s a wonderful feeling to just open up and start creating. I also love to work in new location and this job requires a lot of new places. But the best thing about this work and I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks this way, is the fact that this job doesn’t feel like a job at all. Just because I don’t have to go to the office like many others do every morning gives me an amazing feeling and makes me love it even more! What kind of brands did you work for? Bazaar magazine, Elle, Imag, Yak, Avant Garde, Ok magazine, Roxy, Oakley and of course for some of the designers in Bali. And what brands of make-up do you like to work with? I don’t have a special brand, I like many. The brands that I use at the moment are Mac, Dior, YSL.

What is the reason? No reason in particular but the fact that they good and professional brands. Have you worked with celebrities before? Yes. Many german celebrities at BBC channel and of course at SWR in Germany and recently with the Australian Idol, Guy Sebastian and his wife Jules Sebastian for OK magazine. What do you like to do in your free time? Reading, hanging out at the beach with friends, spending time with my kitty Mong Pai, shopping and if time allows me I love going on trips. Do you like adventurous trips? YESSSSSS. Any future plans? I don’t know, I make no plans for the future but when I leave Bali I’ll go back to Europe. Imagine if your doctor told you that you have only one week to live, what would you do in that week ? (Puzzled expression) I would travel…oh, no it’s only one week right? If I have no time….I think I woud spend that time with my family. makeupanja@yahoo.com

ARIES Life is likely to be especially busy and diverse this month, making fashion both less and more important at the same time. Neglect it too much, to a point where you’re dealing with fashion emergencies and your fashion choices will take centre stage, for all the wrong reasons. But get organized ahead of time, knowing the importance of having something ready that allows you to look and feel good at a moments notice and fashion will take on a necessary, but background role.

LIBRA For the first time since Jupiter left your financial sector earlier in the month the Moon returns to your income sector and this is a bigger deal than you realize. Since as far back as April 2011, the Moon’s monthly visits to your income sector have put him in opposition with forces on the financial front, making it hard to focus purely on his message. This time the Moon’s voice will come through loud and clear and it brings clues of big opportunities ahead.

TAURUS You reach a dramatic turning point on both the income and work fronts this July, to a point where even if this isn’t immediately apparent, this is when the tide turns. This will be more evident from next month, giving you time to prepare behind the scenes. With new income and work options opening up over the coming weeks, it’s never been more important to look and feel the part. See creating the right professional look as an investment not an expense.

SCORPIO With Venus now in direct motion in your financial sector and with the backup of lucky Jupiter, you should be feeling a lot more financially confident than you’re likely to be feeling. In fact, you could even be experiencing a slump, as reality brings you back down to earth. However, it’s Jupiter’s alignment with the South Node in your financial sector and opposition with the North Node in your income sector that will dominate the next month that gives you a chance to iron out the real goals you want to go after.

GEMINI Just as you’re enjoying a real turnaround on the romantic front after Venus, planet of love turned direct in your sign few days ago and Saturn turned direct in your romantic sector earlier in the month, you may start to encounter some relationship and/or personal pressure. This will gain in intensity over the coming days and will last for around a month. However, this nothing to fear, simply Jupiter getting his first and only real reality check in what is the early days of a 12 month period of growth, opportunity and expansion. CANCER With the Moon in a playful and romantic part of your chart and Jupiter challenging a work till you drop attitude, a lot of your self-imposed expectations are being challenged. With Uranus slowing down in your career sector, ahead of his retrograde turn in a few weeks’ time and Mercury doing the same, ahead of his retrograde turn in your income sector, you’re being questioned about what the rush is for. LEO As the Moon makes his monthly visit to your home and family sector, drawing your attention to matters on the home front and possibly evoking some emotional or intuitive reactions, you’re likely to be dealing with some challenges that are dividing your attention. With the needs of others likely to be strong, it’s where this means that you miss out or that you’re not getting to do what you want, that a sense of rebellion may be taking place. VIRGO Just few days after Venus turned direct in your career sector she’s still moving fairly slowly and while you have Jupiter there to push things forward, chances are you’re encountering roadblocks. During the 12 months that Jupiter will spend in your career sector and the expansive opportunities this will create, he’ll face just one real roadblock of any major significance and you’ve just reached it. It’s forces on the home front that step in the way, but in a way that gives you a chance to deal with any work/life balance issues early in the game.

SAGITTARIUS Just when you should be feeling on top of the world, with Venus now in direct motion in your relationship sector and lucky Jupiter providing some powerful back up, you may be experiencing some self-doubts. This is likely to be felt both personally and within your relationships, as some of Jupiter’s grandiose ideas and expectations seem to come down to earth. However, this is not only temporary, but a chance to ensure that you’re chasing the right dream. CAPRICORN Venus’ early days in direct motion in your work sector and Saturn’s early days in direct motion in your career sector, have shifted your professional focus to the future, but both are still moving slowly. This, coupled with the fact that Jupiter is getting his first real challenge since returning to your work sector, could see some disillusionment set in. However, this is more a sign that things are getting real, giving you a chance to look at the more practical details. AQUARIUS As the Moon makes his only visit to your career sector while the Sun is in your work sector, but the first where he’s able to bring some clear and uncluttered messages, you’re able to get your first real sense of the huge opportunities ahead. While things won’t start to move on the career front until August, they will flow on from the work opportunities already developing. It’s your professional instincts that provide some real clues on how to play this. PISCES Take any work/life balance issues that are coming to a head seriously, without over reacting or sweating the small stuff. Yet forces on the home and career fronts are going head to head but with Mercury, planet of communication and smart thinking spending his first weekend in your work sector, you have the intellectual savvy to work smarter. You’re waking up to the fact that you really can have it all, but also that this is something that needs to be worked at.
