When Art Meets Fashion; Stunning Collections! When art meets fashion, there must be something interesting in there. This year, some collaboration between fashion designers and artists become more promising.

impressive. One of the items is pullover with spelled “London” in Japanese letters.

BY rai

Alexander McQueen expands the label McQ to Asia. And guess what? They are proudly inviting a popular manga artist from Japan, Yoshiyasu Tamura, who creates a comic book strip print. The result is a stunning piece of art! They design prints inspired by Japanese youth culture with character as a samurai warrior on the streets of Tokyo. The designs appear across the collections; on T-shirts, sweatshirt dresses, as patches on denim and leather, and all over a giant puffer coat. With the dark background, the comic manga looks stunning and

Collaboration between art and fashion, actually, is not a new phenomenon. Back in 1937, an Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli together with Salvador Dali produced a surreal, lobster-print gown made of silk organza and synthetic horsehair. Then, 30 years later, around 1960s, a turning point in the relationship between art and fashion, especially with the evolution of Pop Art. Thanks to Andy Warhol and Yves Saint Laurent. Warhol who began his career as an illustrator for fashion magazines, finally launch a series of a-line paper dress under the title The Souper Dress. Saint Laurent then, released his Pop Art collections. Saint Laurent also made a dress inspired by artist Piet Mondrian. The dress released for Autumns

– 10 –

season, with a simple A-line, tidy shift silhouette and graphic black lines (running both horizontally and vertically) and white and primary colour blocks. The dress is made up of many individual pieces of wool jersey and becoming an icon for Western fashion at that time. Another important event is in 2001, when Marc Jacobs collaborated with artist Stephen Sprouse on a line of graffiti-splattered handbags for Louis Vuitton. The collaborations of two talented designer-artists sparked a trend in fashion designer and artist collaboration, resulting in a flood of similar alliances over the past decade and until now. Take a look back in the year 2012, where Hermes has at least three contemporary artists to collaborate in their creation. They are German artist Josef Albers, French artist Daniel Buren and Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto. The collaboration produced limited edition scarves.

In the same year, Louis Vuitton ever asked Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama, who well-known for her use of polka dots, and a retrospective exhibition of her artworks. The luxury brand ever invited Takashi Murakami, Tokyo-born pop artist collaboration as well in 2007. Surprisingly, last year, Indonesian artist, Eko Nugroho was invited too by Louis Vuitton for scarf designs. Together they produce a giant shawl design by Nugroho. Brand Marni has teamed up with artist Brian Rea for their pre-autumn winter bags and T-shirts. The interesting aspect of this collaboration is Rea’s graphic designs which depict unusual urban situations with a metropolitan feel. It is not the first time collaboration for Marni. Before this, they use artworks by Rop van Mierlo, a series of painting Wild Animals. Loewe, in other hand has worked with Spanish artist Antonio Balester Moreno on a colourful range of traditional ‘manton de Manila’ scarves. Coach is transporting the bright collections with paintings of James Nares, from canvas on a frame to canvas in the shape of a tote bag. This is getting more exciting for fashion world. And a good collaboration is mutual beneficial. Fashion collaborations are ways for artists expand their profiles globally, and for fashion to get more audiences. Murakami become famous after working with Louis Vuitton. Who knows, Tamura will have the same popularity after McQ collaboration. Interestingly, not only for the collections items, the collaborations sometimes also happen on the presentation, boutique interior and visual merchandise. This year, we will not forget two big events that memorable about collaboration between designer and artist. Designer Miuccia Prada, for her spring 2014 show in Milan, invited six contemporary artists to create murals to decorate her catwalk. The result is imaginary inspired bold but surprisingly wearable dresses and handbags for the collection. That six artists; four muralists are Miles ‘El Mac’ Gregor, Gabriel Specter, Mesa and Stinkfish, plus two illustrators Jeanne Detallante and Pierre Mornet. A muralist creates

larger-than-life outdoor art that exists to draw attention away from the surroundings. Meanwhile, an illustrator is working on a comparative micro universe. Both of them already proved that how impressive their works. Two weeks after that, designer Karl Lagerfeld presented his collection for Chanel transforming the exhibition hall in to an art-fair style, whitewalled hangar. Some canvases were ornamented with planks in the style of artist John McCracken, others framed like old-master work. Many pieces were accompanied by little red dots reminiscent of those seen on “sold” paintings at gallery shows. What make this collaboration collections difference than ordinary one? Fashion might be always changing in a short time, but not art. Just for

– 11 –

example, the dress from Yves Saint Laurent’s Mondrian collection. Wall Street Journal noted that the price for the dress around 3,000-4,500 French francs in 1965. But, in 2011, a version was sold by Christie’s in London for 30,000 pounds. Another good sample is Issey Miyake’s series of collection in 1996 that collaborated with Japanese mixedmedia artist Yasumasa Morimura. The photogenic top, originally sold for 175 US dollar, but now is going for around 2,600 US dollar on Ebay. You get it, now? So, we might not know and expect, the art works for fashion that we see now, could be worth higher in the future. In fact, we already fall in love with the collaboration. It’s time to make art more fashionable.* Images: stylenoir/fashionslop/wsj

natasha gan Bright Me On!

BY fauve

Where do you live? 3 years ago I decided with my family to move to Bali.I am based here most of the year. When did you first realize that you were going to pursue fashion? I knew I wanted to design clothes when I was very young around 10.

Natasha Gan is a fashion designer and creative artist from Australia. When we first checked out her work we thought that her creative flair and outfits was incredible and wanted to know more. I was delighted when she agreed to complete an interview for Fauve Magazine. Read on the discover, amongst other things, what Natasha Gan is inspired by!

And what is your number one passion beside fashion? My family.

My mother was a dress maker, so I was always playing around in her work-room from a very young age. I would spend the weekends rummaging around through all the fabrics and trims, dreaming up my own creations. I began taking it more seriously around the age of 13, enrolling in the local TAFE program to study patternmaking on weekends and by 16 was selected to study fashion design at East Sydney Technical College. It was during that time I was really able to formalise my skills and gain the confidence to get into the fashion business. .I moved to Sydney then for a few years and then straight to London. In my second interview there, I landed a job designing for two of the most well-regarded, high-fashion retailers there, Topshop and Hennes. It was extremely hectic but exciting, and helped me develop an in-depth knowledge of the industry. The immersion in that kind of environment really empowered me to launch my own label.

You created these amazing colorful and powerful prints. How this adventure started? This has been a new thing for me. Moving to Bali I have been really draw to the the incredible colours you see if your everyday travels around Bali. I have an amazing garden at home which I draw inspiration from as well. Also, what was the most valuable thing you learned about “la Mode”? Never give up! What is your signature? The focus has always been on creating a progressive, strong, and sexy collection.I keep ahead with an innovation of fabrics and texture, colourful prints. Natasha Gan embodies a contradiction of strong and tough silhouettes with a balance of softness- of course with quality finishes and a dedication to detail.

hand embroidery. This is something new for me so it’s a challenge to see how far I can go.

What are you known most for? I was always known for more sexy structured pieces but in the past few years after living in Bali I am known for the colourful prints I put in my collection. How would you describe the ‘Natasha Gan’ Woman? All my designs are catered to the young professional who is not afraid to express herself. What is that makes fashion, Great/Superb FASHION? What is that X-factor quality that lifts a garment or a collection to higher level? I think when it all works everything just fits together. The colour, the fabrication, the fit of the garment, the quality and of course the silhouette.I love the newest. Where do you seek inspiration? Everything inspires me. I do a lot of travelling for work and get to see so many cultures which I draw a lot of inspiration from. Living in Bali, I have been really drawn to and influenced by the wide selection of lush colours and exotic prints, which really shows in the designs of my past few collections. Can you describe the work involved in utilizing textiles and prints for your new collection? This new collection I am really excited about as I am changing direction a little and working with lace and

Any collection there is a lot of work involved. From developing the theme or what has inspired you for the collection and then starting the sourcing of fabrics, trims and of course working closely with the graphic designer to develop all your new prints. Working with the embroidery. Alot goes on. How do you discover your textiles? Do you travel the remote parts of Asia in search of that certain fabric? I travel monthly mainly into Asia and spend a lot of time searching for new techniques and fabrications. China is continually developing new ways to work with textiles. So its extremely important to constantly be searching. If you could give women one piece of fashion advice, what would it be? Have fun and feel confident. Last one! Tell us something about your next collection that nobody knows, yet! I have attached in a different email my mood boards for next collection to give you a feel of what I am doing. www.natashagan.com.au

Mandarine takes it away Chop sticks at the ready for a new Hong Kong barbecue restaurant !

BY katie truman

You can’t exactly miss it on Jalan Laksmana; a cute building squashed in amongst Seminyak’s non-descript monstrosities; it’s typically traditional Chinese-style exteriors of intricate carved wood and grand entrance, walls ablaze in pillar-box red and red silk lanterns, almost resembling a Chinese temple lifted straight out of Hong Kong. This continues within, with customized merchant-shop interiors of red and yellow walls decorated with quintessential Chinese wood decorations and dainty blue and white ceramic plates and lengthy food counter lined with wooden drawers replicating a traditional Chinese medicine store. Bamboo bird cage lanterns hang overhead. In most restaurants, it’s prudent not to look down, but here I implore you to glance at the floor, charmingly handpainted with Koi fish and water lilies, like stepping over a pond! It’s not rocket science to work out Mandarine is a Chinese restaurant, but specifically a niche, Hong Kong Barbecue eaterie with typical barbecue dishes and more – the

giveaway, glistening duck and chicken carcasses strung up in the window . Mandarine’s concept is Chinese warung style, simple, fast food, without fuss, emphasized with stylish but bench-style seating and tables in smooth woods that accommodate groups to singletons. Good news for fans like me of this food type, as even down “Eat Street” you won’t find another like Mandarine and it’s a culinary variety that still seems to lack across Bali (and if it does exist, most likely ensconced in five-stars). Even better, prices here are very affordable, it’s all accessible slap-bang in central Seminyak and unlike many Chinese kitchens, Mandarine is around 90 per cent MSG-free. An extensive choice of dishes, listed on a blackboard, has been carefully selected by Chinese-Indonesians, who evidently know their stuff. Obviously, barbecue dishes are signature, with choice of daily barbecued Roasted Duck and Chicken, Hainanese Chicken, Crispy Skin Pork and Char Siu (sweet marinated ) Pork; these can be ordered in a choice of individual, half and whole portions (Duck from Rp65,000 to Rp250,000). In the line of research, I sample all five; not surprisingly, delicious barbecue duck is a best seller, but all barbecue meats are super lean, moist and to-die-for tender, even better dipped in fresh house-made sauces, such as plum (a must-have duck accompaniment), ginger and chili with a moderate kung fu-punch. A good way to indulge is Mandarine Special BBQ Combo, with three choices of meats with sauces, plus soup and noodles or rice – here, tasty Hainanese Rice –for around Rp70,000.

– 22 –

Actually, Mandarine like their combo “Set” concept (which is good, as it takes away a lot of deliberation); other Set options cover Hainanese Rice, Porridge and Noodles. A La Carte section, cooked a la minute with larger portions for two, covers some classic Hong Kong dishes including Crispy Fried Cereal Prawns with chili and garlic (unusual dish but learn this is typical Hong Kong), Salt and Pepper Squid, Black Pepper Beef and my favourite, Sweet and Sour Chicken (Rp 45,000) a yummy and nostalgic throw back to Chinese takeaways back in the UK, with its glazed chicken, pineapple, red peppers onion and chili – pork or fish are alternative options. As a dish, along with others, I rarely get my hands on in Bali, a real treat. For those on the run, a daily Buffet Section comes ready prepared at the counter, dishes (from around Rp 20,000) may include Kung Pao Chicken or Beef with Black Bean Sauce. Other Mandarine treats feature Deep Fried Shrimp Wonton (another favourite that has been solely missed) and to round things off, typical Hong Kong dish, Fried Sesame Balls, the moist Azuki (red bean) paste inside not too sweet, like some desserts. The only things missing are fragrant Chinese loose leaf teas and fortune cookies at the end, but as Mandarine is a new, evolving restaurant opening May this year, these may appear later! In that great Chinese tradition, takeaway is available, and for those unable to make it out, home delivery caters for the Seminyak ‘hood. lily jean less is more

Which is your preferred season, Spring or Fall and why? Definately spring. Love to use colors and show a bit of skin. Spring/Summer makes people happy!

BY katya

How would you describe the ‘Lily Jean’ Woman? She is a beautiful woman who shines from inside, she is in touch with her intuition, is curious and adventurous. She loves wearing clothes that are confortable that shows her femininity and power!

A lot of celebrities wear your gowns to big events. Does what they wear draw interest to the particular gown worn, or to the Lily Jean brand as a whole? Not sure I understand this question Is there anybody that Lily jean is dying to dress? Every woman we dress is inspiring, to see their joy and self confidence grow when they slip into one of our pieces brings us joy and a sense of accomplishement.

What are your basic design principles? Practical, timeless and efortless looks that will enhance a womans personal style. Lily Jean women create their own idenity by using our pieces and this is what makes her a creative individual.

What do you love most about fashion? The creative process of making beautiful. So much appriciation and love for the whole team who make this possible. There is so much creativity here and the people that we work with make our thoughts and inspiration a reality.

Where do you seek inspiration? In books, my surroundings, my trips, my friends and especially nature.

What do you hate most about fashion? The superficial, catty conpetitive side of things gets really boaring really fast.

What does your average day entail? I don’t think i’ve ever had an “average day” – especially in Bali. I meditate, it helps me prepare for the day then I exercise, take my baby girl to school. During the week I spend my days in the office creating (LOVE) and doing administation work (fun! Not!).

What can we expect from your next collection? The new collection is bohemian, hippie chique. We were inspired by the 70’s globe trotting people of that era: Jane Birkin, Bianca Jagger and Janis Joplin, interpreted in a Lily Jean style!

What message do you try to convey with each collection? We like to make women feel beautiful and empowered. It’s important to us that when they try on a Lily Jean style they feel like superwoman, that all their dreams and desires are achievable. The world is our oyster girls!

If you could give women one piece of fashion advice, what would it be? Less is more www.lily-jean.com

“I have been following Nicole’s work for quite some time and it just keeps getting creative and exciting. She has a nack for fashion photography and it clearly shows, but in her own way, different as any other photographers.. I decided to find out a bit about her and what her goals are for the future and current project.”

– interview / photographer –

nicole Talented as Hell!

taking photos till the developing process of films. After a view years of travel i got convinced to study it. So i attended the art school in melbourne for a view years.

BY fauve

Nicole, can you tell us a bit more about yourself? Where do you come from? Where do you live? What led you to a career in fashion photography? Do you have formal training in your background? I was born and raised in africa. With 14 years i moved around from italy to switzerland. Ended up for now in bali. So i still kinda figure out where i’m from and where life will carry me. I remember taking photos since age 9 and ever since i knew thats it. Thats what i love and like to do in life. Not sure if i can say i have a career in fashion. Its more likely to say that my projects sometimes crosses path with fashion photography. As i enjoy to work on my own projects/ideas and collaborated or combine the fashion world in it. My background of the knowledge came manly from myself. I thought myself everything out of books from

Could you name some of the photographers that have inspired you and helped to shape your approach to fashion photography? Im inspired everyday from people i meet and the surrounding of nature. But to say some of many names. My favourite and always will be is annie leibowitz. She inspired me in my young age. Followed by robert mapplethorpe and guy Bourdin. What would we find in your camera bag for a typical assignment in studio or on location? I always got some kind of camera in my pocket is it my first camera the canon a1 or at the moment most likely the Rolleiflex. What is your approach to lighting? Do you prefer artificial or available light? Lighting depends on the image i got in mind and how i want to achieve it. But i prefer to work with natural light, but also enjoying latly the combination of both. What style do you mainly shoot? A lot of nudity haha. No im trying and always was fascinated of the female body as a sculpture and somewhere down the road got stuck with it. But i would say my photography is from conceptual to fine art all together a mix.

– 37 –

If not fashion photography and videography, what would nicole is doing with her time? If im not shooting or writing down new ideas. I started to write more peotry for my concepts to approach new styles images or whatsoever. Otherwise i go for a little surf, a run with my dog, read, write and live life i guess. What has been the best advice given to you by another photographer? It wasnt exactly a photographer it was more my philosophic teacher. He inspired me since the day I met him. And i always go back for advice. Gerhard L Lischka always said let your passion take you through life. And believe in nobody else than yourself. And go see the world dont waste your time studying it. Who is your biggest inspiration? This is a hard one. I can’t define just one person for this. Its combined with all factors in life, who i meet who i got influenced. But if have to call out one its always gonna be annie leibowitz and Gerhard L Lischka. Thank you nicole for sharing a little bit more of yourself with us. We wish u continued success and to offer us these amazing photographs of yours ! Cheers Nicole

Joan Rivers and how her sharptongue affects the fashion world

BY rai

I do not remember since when, but for sure, every time after awarding night, I always cannot wait to watch the “Fashion Police”. I adore the dress that Rihanna wears at the MTV Movie Award 2014, but I need to know what fashion-critique Joan Rivers say about it. Because she always has something ‘bad’ to say and sometimes hardly to say; it’s true. That day, Joan Rivers sit along with her co-host of “Fashion Police”; Kelly Osbourne and George Kotsiopoulos, plus Zendaya as guest-host. They discuss about who wear who at the MTV Movie Award 2014, start with “Five Must-see Look” theme. First, they have Lupita Nyong’O who wears Chanel mini dress. Joan does not like it. She says, the dress might be beautiful but she looks over hardcandy with it. So it’s a big No.

Then, they have Jessica Alba with her Kenzo skirt. Wait, Joan gives us that look; the look when she wants to puke or something because it’s so ugly. She says Jessica looks too young with the skirt and did not match with the top and the shoes she is wearing. Joan is not satisfied. So it’s a big No again. Number three; they have the rising star singer Iggy Azalea who wears John Galliano pink dress. “She’s horrible”. Yes, that’s exactly what Joan says about Iggy’s dress. Joan continues saying that Iggy’s too much pink and her body is not suit with the dress. Not to mention how Joan also gives bad comment toward the hair do. It’s a big No. Next victim is the fresh and young actress Shailene Woodley with her Balmain’s dress. Everyone might say she looks gorgeous and stunning. But, Joan Rivers has another opinion. She says it’s the ugly green and not suitable for the event like MTV Movie Awards. Ups! So sorry Woodley, Joan thinks that green is a dull colour of that time. You should be careful to choose the right colour another time. And we have Rihanna at number one. She looks very great with white – 44 –

satin robe over a plunging playsuit by Ulyana Sergeenko, a Russian haute couturier. But wait, what Joan Rivers say about it. “What the hell she is wearing, she just looks ready for bed.” OoW! That’s Joan Rivers. Her sharp-tongue sometimes pain in the ass, but on the other hand it is true. She just wants to give a comment (or compliment) because she cares. Like her co host of Fashion Police, Giuliana Rancic says; it’s her service to us all. And now, depend on how people accept it. It doesn’t mean Joan Rivers always give a big No to everyone. She ever praises Nicole Kidman with her Vivienne Westwood dress or Jennifer Lawrence with her Dior Couture. Who is this lady that conquers the fashion world after succeed as comedienne? Joan Rivers was born on June 8, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York and her full name is Joan Alexandra Molinsk. Once, her agent Tony Rivers advised her to change her name, so she chose Joan Rivers as her stage name.

It seems that she was born to be a comedian. Before tune into fashion red carpet 20 years ago, Joan Rivers actually ever worked as a fashion coordinator for Bond Clothing Store and as a publicist for Lord and Taylor. Not many people know this.

Hosted by Joan, “Fashion Police” has some interesting regular segments. Besides the Five Must-See Looks of the Week, there are Rack Report, Busted!, Gotta Have It! Make it Stop!, Hot Ticket and Guess Me from Behind.

Then it starts when Joan hosted the 1994 Golden Globes red carpet alone before her daughter Melissa Rivers joined her for following year’s Oscars. They bring their comedy criticism to the red carpet, and change the way red carpet coverage a lot. Thus the famous quote “who are you wearing?” was born.

One of my favourite segments is “Bitch Stole My Look”, in which two or more stars are shown to have worn the same outfit on different occasions. In this segment, Joan Rivers and the panellists discuss the stars in question and declare which person looked best in the outfit. Both the loser and the winner are the subject to ridicule, which is so much fun.

Joan Rivers with her critical approach being recognized by the public. And then, some actors begin asking what she thought of their attire. Then, the rest is a history. Everyone needed to know the opinion of Joan Rivers. The move from stand-up comedian to the host of red carpet and then E!’s Fashion Police was perfectly natural for Joan Rivers. She never stopped being a comedian, instead it looks like she redirected her jokes toward a new topic; fashion.

Joan River’s death on Thursday, 4 September 2014 is a bit shock. It is, of course, the loss of a legend especially for some people who get inspired by her. What’s next for “Fashion Police” without Joan Rivers? Comedian Kathy Griffin says Joan Rivers is a legend, a friend, a mentor, an icon and wildly funny. “She is one of a kind”. Ellen Degeneres tweeted that Joan Rivers will always be a pioneer and she paved the way for a lot

– 45 –

of comedians. Presenter Ryan Seacrest says Joan was traillblazing, hysterical, and thoughtful. Actress Lindsay Lohan says “we’d fuss but love was there”. Among many people who do not like the way Joan Rivers make hilarious joke, singer Demi Lovato takes it as compliment. She says, ”You made fun of my boobies just last week and it was an honour.” For sure, fashion world will be no longer same without Joan Rivers. Like it or not, her sharp-tongue give a bit change toward fashion, especially for big names in the Hollywood. There will be no one who dares to criticize Rihanna and saying Versace dress is a dull and ugly. I do not know exactly, but i think, some people and certain generation will miss the famous quote of her, “who are you wearing?” at the red carpet. And her hilarious joke when she addresses her thought. And ‘the look’ at the moment she sees the ugly dress at the award event. Don’t you agree with?* Images: eonline

karma KONVERSATIONS

IT AINT ABOUT LONG, LONGER OR LONGING

by SWATHIMAA

On a pale day in the wilds of Siberia, Dostoevsky wrote, “The mystery of human existence lies not in just staying alive but in finding something to live for.” Okay, maybe it was a Moscow suburb. No matter. Ions later, on a sunny day in L.A. Will Smith said, “Life’s not in the amount of breaths you take. It’s the moments that take your breath away,” or something schmoltzi like that — of course, the producers, who paid Kevin Bisch to write those lines for the bumbling buddy-chick flick, “Hitch”, paid Will to say them. It’s just as likely Kevin found them somewhere online, himself, if you think about it. Anyway, the sentiment’s the same, more or less. It’s part of our DNA to want, wish for, dream of and long to have something mysteriously “more” in life. We live for that. Sitting here in the warm Bali sunshine, slathered from wrists to toes in organic coconut oil, the mysteries of my MAC teetering on the side tray to my left so as not to mess with my glorious tan, I find myself pondering our longings and the lives we build upon them… and, with your permission, I figured it’s worth discussing. I’ll go first. We long to love, hate, win and vanquish. We long for revenge, for respite, for solace, forgiveness, for sex, for money, power, peace, promotions, and someone to honestly listen to our complaints and still tell us, “It’ll be all right.” We long for everything to be all right, and for some things to be all

over; that is, when we’re not longing for other things to be all encompassing and evermore ( a really nice massage immediately comes to mind). We long for a flatter tummy, tighter skirts, longer legs, half-off sales, safer (and faster) cars, handsomer homes, higher heels, taller men, smarter men, kinder men, more generous and talented men, altogether in one, if you please. We long for more joy, less pain, more laughter, less heartbreak, more alternatives and less confusion. And, if you don’t mind, we want better friends, weaker enemies, more tolerant neighbors, bigger bank accounts, fewer bills, smaller bills, more free time, and really hot clothes that look better on us than they do on anyone else. Oh, and really cool tattoos. We long for straighter hair, curlier hair, thicker, thinner, longer, shorter, blonder or darker and definitely stronger hair; and, a stylist we can trust not to bring us to tears…ever. We long for proof. We long to be right. And, we long to be accepted — unless you’re stupid-as-sin or insensitive-as-anyblockheaded-ex-boyfriend. We long for exotic people, places and things and long to be home in our own bed again. We long for a more functional family, a more compassionate credit rating and a less dispassionate lover/ partner/spouse/mate. There’s nothing singular about our longings. They fill most every moment in time and every inch of space. The only prerequisite: that we’re still breathing; other than that, we’re all good-to-go. If you ask me, there’s nothing sad… or mad…about that. Variety is the spice of Life. The recipes we write for ourselves and the meals we get to eat may not always go as planned, but whatever happens, there’s always something on the menu. If we don’t like the selection, we have a perfect right to pop into the kitchen and whip up something for ourselves. If there’s any question in that, it’s only a matter of the congeniality of the fellowgourmands seated at our designated

– 54 –

table. There’s no famine to the feast of our longings. There’s also no need to fret that longing for something implies there’s a lack in you. And, there’s no need for remorse when a particular tidbit of your longing remains unrequited. Being satiated by stuff, filled to the brim, is overrated. Somebody — somebody biblical, I’m sure — said, “A rich man entering heaven is like threading a camel through the eye of a needle,” or something like that. It’s because most rich folks are already miserable. They’re already in hell. In the material world — and, after all, that’s the table we place 99% of our longings on — “more than enough” doesn’t exist. There’s always more… and it’s never enough. Gluttony leads to bloat; bloat leads to vomiting; and, vomiting is completely inappropriate table manners, to say the least. It all leaves a bad taste in your mouth, a potential bugger of a headache, and a pit to the depths of your soul — or so they say. Still, until we experience them for ourselves, the rest of us long for a rich man or a rich man’s wife or a rich man’s life or a rich woman’s power and the problems that money can fix. And, after that, we long for something or some things else. Dostoevsky isn’t light reading. There’s a lot of that going around. Like soulful waiters reciting the specials, they glumly or gleefully hint that the courses our longings wish on Life’s menu are all garnished with human foibles. I know…it’s a mouthful. But, it follows, right? There’s no material bromine that’ll overcome gluttonous longings or satiated desires. There is, however, an entrée, which fits the bill — and fills your tummy, your heart, and your mysteriously longing mind. If you’re going to go long, long to know your Self, who you truly, soulfully are. It’s the most extraordinary thing on the menu. Some say you’re Divine, with a capital “D”. Try it. You’ll see… it’s wonderful!

WATERCESS MALAM Move onto the dark side global treats, big bowls of signature flavourful salads, detox juices and Sydney-style, rustic breakfasts. BY Katie Truman

Batu Belig’s Watercress Café now makes it double the fun, extending hours, menus and sensational cuisine possibilities… even a new garden bar thrown in for good measure. Fans of Watercress Café (and who isn’t, a popular café-restaurant on increasingly happening Batu Belig street) have been repeatedly drawn to the trademark fresh, gourmet rustic-inclined dishes inspired by Mediterranean, Middle-eastern, South-east Asian and Pan Pacific cuisines; healthy, nutritious and vegetarian-orientated – with locally sourced earthy fresh produce at around 90 per cent organic – that still manages to taste scrumptious. Daytime highlights include divine “Lunchtime Showcase” chilled cabinet, displaying freshly-prepared

Regulars will be mighty pleased however to hear about two new exciting developments from the Watercress team and brainchild, an inspired Byron Bay native, eco-warrior and discerning foodie. The former garden courtyard out front has been converted to a rather refined-meets-casual Garden Bar: street side and part covered, recreating again boho chic and quirky flourishes that Watercress seems effortless at. This newly launched intimate space comes with tables and chairs hand-crafted from recycled crates, chandelier lighting and vertical garden. A new menu of exquisitely crafted cocktails – what’s hot, cosmopolitan and contemporary from across the globe – covers “Rude Mexican,” “Raspberry and Rhubarb Martini” (signature of a famous London hotel) and Mojitos, with fresh mint plucked from their gardens. San Miguel on tap and an affordable selection of well curated, superb

– 56 –

wines, from the highly knowledgeable Sommelier on board, also feature. Even better, complimentary Tapas come served with cocktails and wines. Open from 5pm until late daily, Garden Bar is perfect for hanging out and watching the world go by or pre-dinner drinks, waiting for your table (book ahead, folks, even dining here Monday night was pretty busy) and new Watercress Malam evening dining, kicking off 6pm, Monday to Saturday. Watercress Malam still offers the same “Eat Fresh, live well!” mantra, with fresh, natural deliciousness, wholesome abundance, generous portions and very reasonable prices, all made from the heart. However, Malam reveals a new separate menu and chef team; cuisine post-dusk perhaps a tad naughtier and heartier than daytime, with more protein-rich delectably savoury, emphasis, such as succulent char-grilled meats and grilled seafood. What I’d sum-up as rustic, home-cooking yet global gourmet comfort food, with Pan-Pacific influences and Asian twists.

Dining ambiance also takes a different nuance: daytime Watercress is lunch-rush, buzzy, chatter and sunshine-filled, while evenings get s-l-o-w-e-r, accompanied by soft lighting, candlelit tables and a lingering, leisurely pace where great food is enjoyed with equally great friends, families and lovers. For me, Watercress Malam is quite honestly all excellent stuff, but Starters (around Rp. 40,000-95,000) were wondrous highlights, small dishes served on wooden platters and like most Watercress dishes, accompanied by tasty, freshly-pounded sauces. These include sublime Tuna Tataki, daintily sliced on banana leaf and smears of wasabi mayo sauce, with wild leaves, seaweed and watercress, the seared tuna accentuated with bonito soy sauce; Sweet Potato Fish Cake balls with tarte sauce and Garden Fresh Rice Paper Rolls dipped in piquant sweet chili sauce – I could eat all these by the bucket loads. Watercress is noteworthy for its yummy salads, and here, From the Garden, Big Greek Salad, with

crumbed, gooey feta cheese is no exception. Meat eaters finally get their wishes, with top quality succulent steaks, including Char-grilled 200g Black Angus Rib Eye and Lamb Chops with minted yoghurt imported from Australia, plus Pork Ribs (suveed for five hours for ultratenderness, highlighted with tangy barbecue sauce). These all popular, but top-notch, locally sourced seafood is a key signature, such as Grilled BBQ Mahi Mahi and premier Tuna Steak, enlivened with mango salsa, sweet potato crisps, leafy house salad and coriander pesto. And from the whopping portioned, “Feast For Two!” (Rp.195,000-300,000) – focusing on an overall sharing concept – don’t miss the Shared Seafood Platter, overloaded with catch of the day, crumbed calamari and king prawns, hand-cut chips, BBQ corn and organic house salad (or alternatively Shared Mixed Grill and Shared Ocean and Earth). Ending on a perhaps needed wicked note, indulge in House Desserts, especially Sticky Date and

– 57 –

Fig Pudding, with hot butterscotch sauce and organic vanilla icecream, washed down with premium Revolver powered coffee. Besides all the above, Watercress Malam is a welcome addition to the Bali dining scene, offering a very affordable, gourmet, European-style café-restaurant in the mid-range bracket, (so casual, you could just come off the beach and dine), helping fill a glaring island gap between warungs-budget conscious and pricy high-flyer establishments. 21a Jalan Batu Belig, Batu Belig, Kerobokan, tel: 0361 7808030; www.watercressbali.com Watercress Malam, Monday to Saturday, 6pm till 10.30pm-ish or when guests leave, (Watercress Café general hours, Monday to Saturday 7.30am-11pm, Sunday 7.30am-6pm). Ps. If you’re in the Canggu area (Jalan Pantai Berawa) don’t miss Watercress’ team’s new venture and daytime café, Milk and Madu!

yoga BY veronica

We are like to have easy access to us sessions, gestures, herbs and foods that help us to improve our health naturally, preventing diseases and ailments easily. Some are well known, others are surprising and unexpected. In this new section you’ll learn (or review) some of these gifts of nature and history. Yoga is one of these amazing gifts to us, originally from India, it is suggested by archaeological remains showing yogic positions that it probably existed 3,000 years before BC. No doubt that is a very ancient practice, and even Hindus claim that yoga has always existed. For those living in Bali, it is easy to try different styles and teachers, as well as events and courses related to this field. Regardless of who leads the class or preferred style, the truth is that it provides many physical, mental and spiritual benefits. It is a holistic system that works on all levels. PHYSICAL LEVEL - Energy and Vitality. The body gets rid of toxins, improves circulation, increasing oxygenation and recovering its ability to heal naturally. In the gym, you sacrifice flexibility in order to get strength. But yoga allows to combine both at the same time. - Preventive Medicine. It stimulates the metabolic and anabolic processes. Your body becomes more resistant to diseases and external stimuli.

Studies suggest an improvement in conditions such as arthritis, arteriosclerosis, chronic fatigue and asthma. - Health for Your Spine. It helps to maintain a young and straight back. It also prevents deterioration of the discs through blood flow and flexibility. Our way to walk becomes more beautiful and graceful also making us more attractive! - Anti Aging. Seniors also improve stability and balance preventing falls associated with osteoporosis, so common in old age. - Stimulates the Internal Organs. One of its most notable effects is in the endocrine and neurological system. - Helps reduce Cardiovascular Risks. It helps to manage anxiety, plus clears the mind and bring attention to the present moment. The inner silence reached with meditation can silent disturbing thoughts. - Promotes Inner Harmony. Also the ability to believe in yourself and the intuitive ability to effortlessly realize what to do, how and when. - Improves Relationship with Your Physical Being. It helps to accept yourself physically. - Combats Loneliness. Although you can practice alone at home and this path is followed by many yogis, most prefer to be part of a group to follow the instructions of a teacher. It involves being part in a shared activity feeling part of a group with whom we share preferences. - Helps to Improve Your Relationship with Others. All this makes you feel happy and at ease with yourself. You will become more sensitive favouring more positive relationships with others. At the same time, you will be someone nicer to be with. In summary, the practice of yoga gives you so many benefits that you should not hesitate to at least try it sometime. You may have to try different styles until you find the right teacher who provokes on you that excitement to move you on.

fashion HOROSCOPE Aries As Mercury returns to your financial sector today he’ll find the Moon already here, along with financial forces that have been regrouping ever since Mars left 2 weeks ago. With your financial instincts sharp, as Mercury’s smart head for money kicks in, you’re able to get a read on the influences in play and of where to from here. You’ve had a chance over the last 14 days to let things settle and now it seems you’re back in the game again. Taurus A day after the Moon left your work sector and New Moon energy ran its course Mercury leaves today, taking even more focus off work matters, just in time for the weekend. However, with the Sun staying on and Venus returning in 2 days’ time, this is merely dialling things back for a few days, with a chance to let things settle. In the meantime, the focus shifts to your relationships today, with the Moon stirring your emotional responses and Mercury returning to get the communication lines open. Gemini Just 2 weeks after Mars, warrior planet of the cosmos left your work sector, having done his job of getting massively powerful but slow forces up to speed, Mercury returns today to usher in a more intellectually savvy phase. With the Moon having returned yesterday you’ve already got an intuitive edge, with Mercury returning to give you a strategic edge as well. What you have today is a chance to regroup, exploring new ideas while listening to your emotional, intuitive and imaginative responses. Cancer Mercury’s departure from your home and family sector today should bring you to a point where you’re able to make a firm stand, especially with a New Moon earlier in the week already giving you a lot of traction. However, with Mercury due to return for a double dip visit next month and Venus returning next week there’s a need to keep your mind and your options open. In the meantime, the playful energy in the air is encouraging you to take

your professional hat off or at least find a balance between work and play. Leo Just 2 weeks after Mars left your home and family sector, leaving you with a clear sense of what you’re fighting for, but also a chance to let things settle, Mercury returns to usher in a more strategic phase. With the Moon already here stirring your emotional responses and a lot happening behind the scenes, Mercury’s first job will be to ensure you have your head in the game and the communication lines open. Virgo At a time when the personal and/or relationship tensions of the last 6 weeks are finally behind you, the stars come together to make this an important day for ensuring the communication lines are open. With Venus, planet of love spending her last weekend in your sign but the Moon and Mercury in your communication sector, you’re able to look back on the journey so far and the wakeup calls received, knowing that following your heart and communication are the way forward. Libra Having the Moon in your income sector as Mercury returns today will ensure you not only have a nose for money, but returning just 2 weeks after Mars left that there is a seamless transition into the next phase. It’s Mercury’s smart head for money that allows you to start looking at more specific options and with Mars having smashed or seriously damaged any glass ceilings, to swap the sledgehammer for a scalpel. Scorpio While the Sun won’t return to your sign for another few weeks, with Mars having just left 2 weeks ago and Mercury returning today, in all but name this is something that has already begun. It’s Mercury’s return today that applies you to take your mental focus off the past and away from internal review and reflection, for now anyway and to start getting your head around new options. Missing is any urgency, though you’ll find it easier to think clearly and express yourself.

– 63 –

Sagittarius Despite the fact that Venus, in her last weekend in your career sector, the Sun in his first weekend in your friendship sector and Pluto his first in direct motion in your income sector will all want your attention, a lazy and reflective vibe is more likely to see you crave time out and a chance to hear yourself think. The only truly urgent factor today is a need to keep your professional hat on, but even that is more about listening to your heart and what it’s telling you. Capricorn While, with the Sun in his first weekend in your career sector, there’ll be no time to take your professional hat off any time soon, the Moon and Mercury’s return to a more social part of your chart will at least try and balance this. It’s been 2 weeks since Mars left you with a competitive and team spirit and with social matters once more coming to the fore you’re able to focus today on ensuring the communication lines are open, while trusting your gut is likely to put you in the right place at the right time. Aquarius It was 2 weeks ago that Mars left your career sector, leaving you with your professional passions and fighting spirit fuelled, but taking away any urgency. This gave you a chance to let things settle and for powerful forces behind the scene to consolidate your position. With the Moon having returned yesterday your professional instincts will be sharp as Mercury returns today to get your head in the game and the next, more strategic phase underway. Pisces While Mercury’s departure from your financial sector won’t take your focus off money matters or bring a need to take your money hat off, it will bring a sense of adventure into play, reminding you that it’s not always about the money. Returning to an adventurous part of your chart 2 weeks after Mars left you with a passion for adventure and a hunger for life’s richer experiences, this is a chance to start walking the talk.

research I went to beauty school. I wanted to write a chick flick film set in a spa much like the movie “Beauty Parlour”. While at school and researching various beauty clinics, spas and salons I realized that most of these places didn’t have strong business systems and operating systems

BY katya

Single moms, high school dropouts, women who love and want to beautify other women but lacked in the support and structured needed to be empowered as viable businesswomen.

Bali is somewhat of a mecca for beauty and spa treatments. For years and years it has been famous for traditional massages, fragrant body oils and 3-hrs spa packages. There are also a number of aesthetic clinics and hair salons. But where does the girl go to get all of these experiences in one place? The asnwer is AMO spa. The moment this place was opened it became a hit among both islanders and tourists. We sit down and talk with the owner of AMO – actress, supermodel and extremely enchanting woman Navia Nguyen.

When I had Raine and we decided to take a time out for the 1 year in Bali, I thought would sit down and write not only a script for my personal creative self expression, but create the operating procedures, systems and manuals for spas, salons and aesthetic clinics to streamline their operations.

How did it all start? First of all, how did you find yourself on this island? My then husband now ex-husband surfs...

I am and continue to be genuinely amazed, moved and inspired by how quickly Amo became a raging success and we are launching our 2nd location based off of all systems and a software program we designed next month.

And then the idea of the Amo Spa was born. How did this idea come to you? I had been in the film business and when I was pregnant I decided to step away from the production end of films and do some writing so as

I originally opened Amo spa only to test my formula, concept and systems. To gain the practical useful experience to then apply to the procedures that I wanted to re-evaluate and streamline.

You are from New York. What are the main differences between big city spas and Bali spas? Urban spas take into account con-

venience, efficiency and ultimately the results. I am a New York City girl through and through and I don’t want to spend 4 hours just to get a mani, pedi and blow out. Urban spas are essentially geared towards the grooming and maintenance that is essential for every non-feral female or male... Bali spas are geared towards an experience or break from the rat race, a moment to yourself where you can relax and sit in the awe and wonder of this beautiful world in and outside you. An experience of your own inherent joy and unlimited potential and loveliness. Bali is now my home and I am moved every time I ride through the rice paddies on a full moon night. Amo is an amalgamation of all the effectiveness of an urban spa and all the feel good of a Bali or relaxation spa. I am a girl who believes you can tap into your joy, light and happiness and reflect that outwards with glowing skin, flirty lashes and Chanel nail laquer in Dovima. Who is your typical client? Our clients are mostly well-travelled global nomads, high-end expats, and internationally educated locals. People who know quality and are savvy to the value we bring and the prices we charge because they are connected to what’s going on around them and have a balanced appreciation for everything from our music, cocktails to oxygen facials. Amo Spa’s concept is a lifestyle or way of life spa. We do no advertising and have a mostly repeat and loyal client based usually referred by word of mouth.

What are the biggest joy and the biggest challenge of spa business? My co-workers, clients, the results we produce and my co-workers, clients and the results we sometimes can’t produce. What are your personal favorite treatments in Amo? I love the whole messy tactile wet vigorous experience and smooth skin results of our Amo Body Scrubs in our wet rooms. The Diamondhead Microdermabrasion and Oxygen Facials ( Make Me

Beautiful Package) are so thorough and effective because we use high tech machines with high frequency, cold pressure, steamers and etc that I don’t feel like I’m just wasting my time. And last but not least, We have over 1,000 colours of nail polish across brands like OPI,Debra Lippman,NUDE to CND Vinylux and Shellac...What girl doesn’t love that candy store experience of a cheap, easy, instant pretty me experience!!!!!

– 65 –

Are there any new treatments coming our way? Any big plan for the future? We launch our 2nd location in next few months. The new Amo Express is a fine-tuning of our personal grooming treatments using quality products, high tech in an unpretentious homey environment. Basically its like going to a spa in a New York Townhouse in Bali complete with rooftop garden for massage, body scrubs and organic spray tanning...

heart kingdom ROCK THE JACKET! BY AstriD

In this post, I will cover the most timeless and basic piece you need to create an awesome and classic wardrobe. It’s definitely an investment piece, so you don’t need to be afraid to splurge, spend a little bit more than you used to. It’s a classic and you can wear it a couple of times, never out of date! Also, it makes everyone looks like a babe in it! Who doesn’t love a Biker Jacket? It pairs well with just about everything in your closet. It’s best friends with your denim pieces, and gets along just as well with your feminine lace and chiffon. Just like any wardrobe mainstay, it’s a smart to seasonally update how you style the key piece or risk looking stale. Biker jacket trend is here to stay – everyone from Rihanna to Cara has been snapped in one, and they are expected to hit the runway at fashion shows. A biker jacket is the cornerstone of great off-duty dressing.

Biker jackets have always had a point to make with their metal and their zips – but don’t look to the past. Why do they have to be black? Consider colour, and contrast biker style with a flimsy, floaty dress above flat ankle boots.

Something about the contrast between a tough motorcycle jacket and sweet filmy frock never gets tired.

So this is the jacket, If you feel stuck in a rut with your leather jacket, though, you aren’t the only one – a recent study found that a whole lot of us leave our jackets on the hangers because we can’t think of new ways to wear the biker jacket trend. Which is why these great new ideas have come just in time… – 68 –

…and this is HOW you rock it in a few ways!

While a crop top paired with a moto jacket seems tame by the pop songstress’ standards, we find the look delightfully daring for those willing to show a little midriff.

Ground a bohemian look with the alwaysmodern biker jacket

The ‘90s are (still) having a moment.

A ladylike skirt is practically begging for an edgy counterpart like a classic biker jacket.

Something about the contrast between a tough motorcycle jacket and sweet filmy frock never gets tired. Finish your outfit with neutral basics like a high top Converse to look more stylish.
