– EDITOR’S NOTE –
“To inspire and to be inspired”
I don’t know about you, but I always love it when TV shows feature fictionalised versions of the fashion industry. I don’t claim by any means to know a lot about it, but it always fascinates me to see what people think this industry is like. Essentially like watching every well-known fashion industry stereotype in one friendly, sixty-minute bite. Predictably, the fashion is the villain. But, as ever, the truly remarkable thing about this fashion industry is to seem stunningly scripted. With clever touches such the above, and cutting lines like - “She’s too fat.” / “She’s only a size six!” / “Exactly. Tell her to come back when she’s got an eating disorder!”, I have no doubt that the fashion TV shows scriptwriters are back to their absolute best.

– INTERVIEW / DESIGNER –
IKA BUTONI A mix between Indonesia and China You created the Bali Fashion Week. How this adventure started? Ika Butoni is a fashion designer and creative artist. When we first checked out her work we tought that her creative flair and outfits was incredible and wanted to know more. I was delighted when she agreed to complete an interview for Fauve Magazine. Read on the discover, amongst other things, which fashion designer Ibu Ika is inspired by!
May you tell us a bit more about yourself? Where do you come from? Where do you live? Mardiana Ika, Born North Sumatra, Pematang Siantar. Moved to Jakarta with the family at young age, last studied at the University of Indonesia, Faculty of Letters, later at the Hong Kong Far East Dress-making School, followed by the London College of Fashion. Worked for L’Estelle D’Ore before staring Butoni. Live between Bali – Hong Kong – Haarlem When did you first realize that you were going to pursue fashion? And what is your number one passion beside fashion? My passion was Painting, but then it was very costly to spend on the Al Greco paints if one could not sell the work like many beginners. Hong Kong started the Hong Kong Fashion Week in 1970s. It gave me idea that I could swirl my talent as a painter to be an illustrator/ designer.
Bali Fashion Week started when the Indonesian economy tumbled, presidents replaced one after another. Killings in campuses, burning of minorities houses, mass women raped, heads paraded over bamboos.. There were no compassions, self value were on the lowest, therefore no value were placed on others.. After considering throwing my passport away, I realised that was the time and responsibility to show my dedication to my country. Therefore I decided to firmly plant my feet back in my homeland and stated the First Fashion Week in South East Asia-Australia. Entering the fifth year of the Bali Fashion Week, my team support began to start fashion weeks in their regions: ~ JFW - Jogya Fashion Week Afif Syakur ~ JFFF - Jakarta Food and Fashion Festival - Musa Widyatmojo ~ ITAF - Juliab Koersen ~ JFW - Jakarta Fashion Week - by family of my mentor at the University of Indonesia, who came to Hong Kong to ask me to return to mother land, instead of forming factories in India and China. ~ IFW - BFW team APPMI. I felt it was time to support other fashion weeks in Indonesia, since there are so many mushrooming now, understanding there are only limited numbers of designers in the country to share The Events. I realised at early stage then, that many designers/ manufacturers were not equipped with the ground knowledge of the industry. Rather than continuing ‘the umbrella’, I thought of
– 10 –
working from the ‘grass roots’. In 2006 with Christian Fritz – German - We started BEDO - Bali Export Development Organisation - www. be-do.org to help the UKM - Small to Medium stage manufacturers with support and training facilities. Now with the ECP Holland+BEDO, together with the Ministry of Trade, we manage to have the third batch of manufacturers ready to take part in the Vietnam Life Style on 16 - 23 April 2014, followed by trade fairs in Europe. Spending my time in Hong Kong / Europe, and in Bali, I feel grateful to still manage and to have the balance. In some way it makes my design more ‘ripe’ as I always try to improve my knowledge as I travel. Also, what was the most valuable thing you learned about “la Mode”? La Mode exist to make the wheels of garments business more interesting. People always look for something new. Without which they don’t have to make changes to what they wear, season after season. When people have good earnings, they are excited to go out to spend, be it socializing with friends, attracting their opposite sex etc. they need to impress others with new outfits. These go into the bigger picture, Magazines, Life Styles, Tutoring, Gourmet, all about presentation, there goes ’La Mode’. What is your signature? I left Indonesia with a beautiful name, Mardiana Ika. I was always proud of it, until people called me in abbreviations like Mardi, Ana, Diana. Therefore I requested them to call
me Ika. Selling to Japan in 1985 as the first export to crack on, with the company name Butoni, the Japanese used to address me as Ika Butoni. Obviously they felt comfortable with it, so I finally accepted it to be the brand label. What are you known most for? Ika Butoni is known for fashion presented with handcraft. Using most difficult techniques, Ika Butoni has given employments to thousand of workers spreading from China, India and Indonesia since 1985.This gives more motivation to the future to help create jobs in the world. How would you describe the ‘Ika Butoni’ Woman? Ika Butoni Woman is a woman with self confident, active in daily life without having to fuss around the outfits she wore, as the Ika Butoni outfits give comfort in movements to the wearers. She has only the tasks and the future to be concerned about. What is that makes fashion, Great/Superb FASHION? What is that X-factor quality that lifts a garment or a collection to higher level? Fashion should connect to the NOW factor, while great and superb creations may not always be linked to fashion. They may be ART. The X-factor in Fashion has to include surprises in the NOW genre, not to forget the superb quality and finishing to the unusual fabrics used. Nowadays they combine Hi-Tech in these surprises..
Where do you seek inspiration? It used to be going to places, traveling far to seek inspiration. As life ripening, it takes sitting anywhere comfortable, with favourite music ( very important), fabrics selected and a touch of research materials, I would be ready. Can you describe the work involved in utilizing textiles and prints for your new collection? I am always excited with finding new ways to explore the fabrics, like a child in the play room.. Whatever comes to mind would be tested, inventing different technique and making new textiles, finishing it with print over the surface. How do you discover your textiles? Do you travel the remote parts of Indonesia in search of that certain fabric? I don’t travel to remote parts of Indonesia, although that would be exciting, as one would not find fabrics that could be produced in quantities. Our Hi-Fashion garments’ order reached 3000 pieces/ style. I am not ready to skip my beauty sleep nowadays worrying about productions going wrong in quality. The orders enough to give jobs to many. How could you describe your personal style? Different to what you design or produce? Personally I’m comfortable leadinga simple life, not caring if people knew me, as my creations speak for themselves with world class designers
– 11 –
ordering my collections. I am a painter who loves to create amazing work, but like to stay behind to enjoy the next one. What is your favorite piece of clothing in your closet? A tee-shirt and old pair of pants. If you could give women one piece of fashion advice, what would it be? If they are smart and active women, they would not be victims to the so called Fashion. They’d know how to choose the fashion/ garment to enhance their importance of their presence. If they are the victims, I am not the expert to advice them. How do you see yourself in 10 years? Still ‘painting’, still ‘playing’, still having fun, although the calling to veer the direction will be more towards empowering knowledge, creating more jobs.. Last one! Tell us something about yourself that nobody knows, yet! I lead life in the Glam world, but I am very detached to having to show my car and chauffeur in front of the five star hotel after an event. Therefore I live by the sea in Bali/ Hong Kong where people don’t care about your wealth. After all, who cares... www.ikabutoni.com

No More Plain: Print and Pattern Dare to Wear?
for sharing the vision. And then, some stores are also pushing prints whether online or selling large volume in stores.
BY RAI The year of 2014 could be the year of print and pattern. Rather than showing something plain, some designers indulge us into a fashionable risk. The question is; do you dare to wear? Once, a friend of mine is saying that she got crazy to see ladies with floral prints dress everywhere; in the office, restaurant at lunch and even at the bar after works. “Isn’t it that too much?” she said. She might be missed the annual trend report of 2014 (if it sounds so important). Since, it’s obvious that floral print is one of the trends that will be a barometer of fashion taste by now. Besides, there are also geometric, ethnic futuristic, and camouflage that superimposed on a basic colours. Even though, patterns have been showing for the past several seasons, 2014 appears to be the season of the print. Not to mention how many designers using pattern as their key communication tool
The reason behind it perhaps, because a pattern brings the images of being bold and expressive and could be presented in a variety of ways. Floral for example, it could be soft, romantic, hand-painted floral, abstract or flat floral. Its application might be formal or romantic feel. Let us see some of the designs, like jungle floral Hermès, or ancient motifs by Dolce and Gabbana. Floral were also used by several of the big names as well, such as Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors. They used mid-sized floral in simple two-colour patterns. Meanwhile, Marni and Emporio Armani layered multi-colour flowers and foliage to bring depth and dimension to the patterns. We see floral everywhere, from dresses to t-shirts, shorts, skirts, blouses, and also printed on bags and shoes. Have you found one? Nowadays, the image of feminine become bias by the floral print. Officially, men also can leave their chalk stripe, pinstripe, hounds tooth, or plaid patterns wardrobe into floral patterns by now. They are so easy to find too.
– 20 –
Prada’s floral menswear collection for Spring/Summer 2014 is quite impressive. The style is a dark take on the tropical foliage. Label Ami from Paris, presents the botanical prints, while House of Hackney, London-based offer prints are equally lush. River Island on another hand, produces aloha noir feel includes prints verging on floral tapestry. The choice is hard, between sweat-shirt of Hackney or bomber jacket featuring a botanical print from Ami? It’s not just floral defines romantic; fauna prints do it too as well. We could see over-scaled or microdot bird placement, a horse, cheetah, photographic animals, quirk illustrative animals, or appliqué embellished. From Dolce and Gabbana to Alberta Ferretti to Antonio Marras, aren’t them loveable too? Animal motif trend seems to be best applied to tees, knitwear anda accesories, range from small animal to repeated animal prints to large. Interesting to see some brands that using different animal motif. Topman offers print a blue and white zebra fish print. Paul Smith put colourful zebra motif into their knitwear, hoodies, and tees. Ted Baker is offering printed small
silhoutte of deer, dogs and foxes. Burberry Prorsum has owl and dog motif tees and knitwear, McQ Alexander McQueen has a denim shirt with small hummingbird motif. At last Marc Jacobs tee featuring animals from turtles to cockatoos to elephants to lizard. Related to this trend, last year at Jakarta Fashion & Food Festival (JFFF), BD+A design reported fashion trend forecasting for 2014 called ‘Tradition Revolution’. There are four theme that perhaps will be trend fashion in 2014; Demotic, Cardio Mind, Saga City and Asilum. Demotic used the traditional roots combined with global and modern lifestyle. The result is edgy and extreme collections with impression of cosmopolitan look. In this theme; including Ethno futuristic, Geometric luxurious, and Technical glamorous. We have seen Priyo Octaviano couture in last issue, and now we know where the inspirations come from. Related to print and pattern, another theme is Asilum which is showing eclectic, theatrical, illustrative, folk, street and anti-consumerism. This is also including arts, graphic, and abstract painting. The bright colours meet vibrant and gold accent.
Then add some more application or embroidery. All of the stuff becoming attractive looks.
Not to mention, we also can find camouflage printed bags, shoes and belts.
Geometric patterns and shapes, which is used to associate with interiorr design, now been incorporated into a wide variety of fashion accessories and collections. From geometric-patterned dresses to studded-shoes, some designers also serve to add an intricate amount of details to an ordinary outfit.
But please not to wear them all in one look. It’s more to do with the colour composition for example a camouflage blazer in shades of orange or citron. There are some colours for camouflage, and my favourite is monochromatic grey version when worn as t-shirts or jacket. Camouflage for men, represented by Valentino, Dries Van Noten and many famous designer houses.
Geometric shapes similar to the color-blocking and anyone can wear this trend. The key is to avoid highlighting our troubles area while doing so, ensure the neutral colours fall on that areas. Have you seen Beyonce with safari party crop top and geometric print skirt Topshop? Speaking about print, not to forget about camouflage patterns. From Rihanna (who release a series of camouflage collections) and then Pharrel Williams with his boldcamouflage shirt under blazer, we can say, this pattern also everywhere by now. We used to see them in clothing items like military jacket and parka, but now, we see them as well in button-down shirt, t-shirts, knitted tops, casual pants, shorts, jeans, skirts, dress and blouses.
– 21 –
Women will have nothing to consider about wearing print compare to men. It took a bit longer to make them confident or perhaps it’s time for men to have “more fun with fashion”, right? After all, some designers already celebrate the year of 2014 as the year of print and pattern with their impressive collections. Now, it’s your turn!*

TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR...
bones by VERONICA produced in the bone and new bone is replaced. As we age, bones degrade faster than we replace.
In Spanish there are several phrases that make loving reference to the area more resilient and enduring of your body, your bones. “ I’m crazy for your bones “ or “ I’m in love up to the bone marrow” are expressions that indicate such a deep love that makes your partner love that part of your body that no one can really see, but that is also so important.
Here are some good habits and tips that can easily help continue to have a strong, healthy and sexy skeleton:
Your skeleton is the pillar and support for your movements. Maybe you got one bone cracked or broken, but with a little help they welded them back together allowing you to continue taking steps through life. The bones will give you support and allow movement. They protect your brain, heart and other organs. In addition, bones store minerals such as calcium and phosphorus, which help you to keep them strong, and release these substances to other organs when they need them for other uses. It is never too late to take care of your bones. There are many types of bone disorders. The most common and sure you’ve heard on more than one occasion is osteoporosis. With osteoporosis the bones become weak and are more likely to fracture. We know that bone health depends largely on the lifestyle we lead and that your food can be a decisive factor when you want to take care of your bones. They are alive. Every day your body replaces old cells
- Diet. When it comes to strengthening bones, there are two key nutrients: calcium and vitamin D. Calcium keeps bones and teeth structure, while vitamin D improves calcium absorption and bone growth. Good sources of vitamin D include egg yolks and fish. Fruits and vegetables also contribute other nutrients that are important for bone health. Sources of Calcium: Yogurt. Most people get vitamin D through exposure to sunlight, but some foods, such as yogurt, are fortified with vitamin D. It is also a source of calcium. Milk is the best source of calcium. Cheese. It is also a rich source of calcium, but do not abuse, it contains too much fat. Sardines. These small fishes contain high levels of vitamin D and calcium. Eggs. Although eggs contain only 6 % of the daily serving of vitamin D , are a quick and easy way to get it. But eat it completely because the yolk is the one with the vitamins.
– 22 –
Salmon, 150 grams contain more than 100% of the daily dose of vitamin D.
There are also risk factors that unfortunately cannot be controlled:
Spinach. They have a lot of calcium, plus fibre, iron and vitamin A.
- Age. The chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age.
Sesame seeds, they are a natural source of calcium that immediately assimilates your body.
- Sex. If you’re a woman, you are more likely to suffer from osteoporosis. Women have smaller bones than men and lose bone faster than men due to hormonal changes that occur after menopause.
However, most people do not know that beyond the control intake of calcium and vitamin D, it is also important to reduce sodium in the diet to prevent osteoporosis. High sodium intake increases urinary excretion of calcium, and the kidney reabsorbs sodium preferably before calcium. Thereby reducing dietary sodium improves calcium retention in the body and decreases the chances of developing diseases such as osteoporosis. - Physical Activity. No exercise and stay inactive for long periods of time can increase the likelihood of developing osteoporosis. Like muscles, bones become stronger (and remain stronger) with regular exercise.
- Family history. Having a close family member with osteoporosis could increase the chances of getting it too. Many people have weak bones and do not know. That is because usually bone loss occurs in long term and it is painless. If you want to know the health of your bones, you can perform a bone density test , which measures the resistance density and whether or not you have osteoporosis. It will also indicate how likely you are to fracture a bone. This test is quick, safe and painless.
- Smoking, it can prevent the body of using the calcium from the diet. - Alcohol. People who drink heavily are more likely to develop osteoporosis. - Drugs. Certain medications can cause bone loss.

LEONE STAVE A talent to know !
BY FAUVE
Could you name some of the videographers and/or photographers that have inspired you and helped to shape your approach to fashion photography?
I’ve been following Leone’s work for quite some time and it just keeps getting inspiring. He has a nack for videography and it clearly shows. I decided to find out a bit about him and what his goals are for the future and current project
That would be Nick Knight. His works impressed me with the uniqueness and quirkiness I never saw any other photo/videographers works. And I can’t not mention Nicoline Patricia Malina too, her work is definitely inspiring!
Leone, Can you tell us a bit more about yourself? Where do you come from? Where do you live?
What style do you mainly shoot? I don’t have a particular style. But I believe people can see a signature touch in my works. I do edit my videos in certain way, love quirkiness.
I was born in Jakarta on 11 august 1977, you can say I’m head to toe Jakartian! Always been a curious kid who wanted to learn about everything. What led you to a career in videography? Do you have formal training in your background? I was a devoted skateboarder since very young age. Once my father gave me a Handycam so I could record my scatting sessions. I guess that was my very first videographic experience. I do not have any formal training in videography, but when at the age of 21, I got the chance to work within a production team, I gladly took the job. We would produce materials for online TV, cooking, traveling programs, all kind of things. My job was quite easy back then, I would simply roll the cables, but as time passed by I finally could try to work with a real professional camera, I learned in process, by observing and remembering.
What are the biggest campaign you worked for? That would be campaigns for Matahari department store, L’oreal and Kerastase, also Pond’s, Sony, Pocari Sweat and Honda. Can you explain your videography philosophy that “reality is perception, and perception is reality”? Each person has it’s own reality, which depends on character, personal history, cultural upbringing many factors! Person has it’s own subjective way of seeing things and for them it becomes an objective reality. With my works I believe I can trigger viewers imagination, and which way it leads, depends on their perception.
– 24 –
You have a beautiful way of showcasing the vibrancy and textures of garments. What types of fashion inspire your creativity? There is no certain type of fashion behind it. I simply catch the beauty I find during the shoot, textures, colors, details, face features, shadows and shapes. And deliver it to viewers to enjoy the motion picture. Your films have incredible energy, and the music seems to flow perfectly with each scene. Do you create the song mixes for them as well? What role do you feel music plays in the overall final films? Music plays a huge role and is very important for the films. Every movement can be associated with a sound and this is how emotions are translated. I love music a lot. By the end of every movie editing I know which music I’m going to use. What’s your earliest memory of being on a film set?
You mostly work with NPM photography (Nicoline Patricia Malina) she is one of the best photographers in Asia, how it is like to collaborate with such great artist? We share similar vision on beautiful imageries and fashion, so it’s a really inspiring, while also being effective and efficient collaboration everytime. You pay close attention to detail in your films. Are you that meticulous in the rest of your life? Yes I am! I’m a perfectionist in all aspects of my life, from my wardrobe to working place and to folder organizing. Do you have any advice for aspiring videographers? Just keep doing your own style, keep it sharp, be original :)
Do not forget about everything :D http://www.vimeo.com/leonestave www.nicolinepatriciamalina.com

natasha Usually No Words, Only Photo!
BY JUL A sunny monday in Bali, I met with prolific and enigmatic photographer Natasha. Fresh off her woman ‘eyes imagery, she reveals why she loves fashion photography and how she’d become the island woman photographer! She opens off! Natasha, can you tell us a bit more about you? Where do you come from? Where do you live? I was born in a small city in Siberia in Russia. There wasn’t really anything to inspire me to become an artist there. I am ended up studying Marketing and found I was quite good at it, but I never loved it. I wanted something more. Then I moved to the vibrant city of Moscow. The city was alive! Which was a huge change for me. I really love that period of my life - I could
not even imagine there being so many talented, inspiring people in the world, and they were all under the same roof of my new magic city. For the first time in my life I was able to experience art cinemas, exhibitions, decadent parties, and culture at its best. For many enjoyable years I built a good career in marketing in Moscow. But then something came over me and I just booked a oneway ticket to Bali, and that was it. Was it a bit scary? Yes of course!! I had been dreaming of learning how to surf for years. But instead of just dreaming about moving to a tropical island, I took the courage to actually do it. And then I met the LOVE of my life, and the question of ever going back to Russia simply evaporated. What led you to a career in fashion photography? Do you have formal training in your background? My love for photography was a love that grew like heating up an oven. The love of my life is a talented
– 34 –
photographer; so talented designers, models, and photographers constantly surrounded me. And one day I just thought, “I want to try this too!!” So I picked up a camera and taught myself. And then all of a sudden I was sharing a love for photography with the love of my life. He really helped me skyrocket my skills by granting me access to the best photo equipment and a fully equipped studio, and of course he has always been generous with his secrets and advices. How long have you been a photographer? About 3 years. How would you describe your style? I`m not sure what my style is just yet. I am still learning and growing, as I am quite new to photography. But the one thing I know I always want to accomplish in a photograph is the element of emotion. When someone looks at my photography I want them to stop and really feel something.
Could you name some of the photographers that have inspired you and helped to shape your approach to fashion photography? I really enjoy the work of : Helmut Newton , Ellen von Unwerth , Steven Meisel & many others. What would we find in your camera bag for a typical assignement in studio or in location? Canon 5d mark III and 24mm, 50mm, 85mm and a some magic fairy dust… :) What style do you mainly shoot? I shoot in whatever style I am feeling connected to in that moment. I see beauty and magic in everything, and I use whatever style I feel will most effectively communicate the beauty and magic I see through my unique perspective.
As you look through the viewfinder, what is the most critical moment in the capture of your image? Photography is an art of spontaneity and intuition. The connection of these two things to the viewfinder is what I am trying to do every time I pick up the camera. How important is Photoshop in your final images? Photoshop is blessing, but it’s not everything. It’s the cherry on top, but it’s the cake that people want to eat. So first I focus on getting the image perfect as in, and then I do a little sprucing up in Photoshop for utter perfection. What is your favorite image you have shot recently? Just a girl on the beach. She wasn’t even a model, she was just a beautiful creature who knew how to move, and together we captured a mood that was really extraordinary.
– 35 –
If not fashion photography, what would you do with your time? Since I’ve discovered photography it has opened up a whole new world for me. So far I’ve only explored portrait, beauty and fashion photography. I plan on travelling to and documenting all the wondrous places that I’ve read about and dreamed of going to. What has been the best advice given to you by another photographer? Keep shooting. Thanks Natasha! Fauve wishes you luck, and, keep offering us more of your amazing photography work ;)

By Katya “Every man should build a house, plant a tree and father a son” That old proverb that most of us are familiar with since childhood. But how many people are living up to these three tasks nowadays? The bringing up the son part is still quite an easy task for most of the population. I know a few people who have planted a tree. Or a bush; or at least a couple of flowers. But I know only one person who has built a house – my grandpa. He actually built two. Almost all by himself, with a moderate help from my father. Our country house took him seven years to build, but he enjoyed every moment of it. He is 90 years old this year and now lives in the countryside in the second house he had finished building few years ago.
Building a house was never easy, but it was definitely less complicated in the old days then it is now. With all these inspectors, permits, regulations, licenses, expensive materials, tools etc. it’s almost impossible nowadays to build a house on your own. Or at least that’s the impression we have.
cool in the times of hot weather and keep warm, when the weather is cold. Thick walls make them soundproof. They are also extremely durable. Comparing to modern apartments or houses that need repairing once every few years, some cob houses can stand for a few hundred years.
I will tell you a secret. You can build your own house from scratch with your own hands. Its might cost you less then a car. And (should be a favorite part of all tree huggers) – it will be completely green and eco.
The main building materials for these organic architectural homes are straw, mud and sand. So the buildings are fire resistant also and can’t be damaged by insects, such as termites. And here comes the best part: cob houses are extremely cheap and also super cute. Imagine the fairy tale ginger bread house or the hobbits house in the Shire. Google “cob house” images and you’ll understand what I’m talking about.
Cob houses have been around for many hundreds of years. They are so easy to build that a dilettante can do it. Even elderly people and children can assist with the construction and be a part of the project. No special equipment needed – your own hands and feet do most of work. These houses are
– 38 –
So, lets say you’re willing to give it a go and are ready to build
a cob house all by yourself. Where does one start? There are numerous books and websites on natural building, as well as open workshops held all around the world. There is even one place here, in Bali, where you can learn cob construction in practice. Zahara Urban Farm was founded 5 years ago by Tasha Davis. Tasha first came to Bali when she was a little kid in 1979. “I’ve been around for a very very long time. It was just beach and rice fields, everyone here knew each other, we watched sunrises and sunsets together. It was freedom, it was magic. Now it’s all about corporations, big hotels, people with fat wallets that just want to lay on a daybed next to the pool in a luxe hotel and be
served with drinks and food. Bali is not that accessible anymore for people with the sense of community, for backpackers and simple world wanderers. And this is what I am trying to change with my earth building project. Anyone can come and stay with me and help. Its completely free of charge, you just have to participate in the building or demolishing process in exchange. I, myself, got first introduced to cob building by my friend in Candidasa, who ran an Earth Oven project. I got so inspired! I totally loved getting in a mud and straight away decided that I need to build a cob house on a piece of land that I owned. I wanted to spread a word around, so in time my land became a homestay, more people came, more houses were built, both

from cob and bamboo. That’s how Zahara Urban Farm started.” Zahara Urban Farm welcomes anyone who would like to learn and help with expanding the project. Those who have ever stayed and worked with Tasha has only good words to describe the experience. Tasha’s enthusiasm is contagious and when you leave you take with you a knowledge, that one day will help you to build your very own house. You can then plant a tree next to it and see it growing together with your kids. karma KONVERSATIONS Monsoon Memories
by SWATHIMAA In my experience, Bali has the best monsoons. They’re wonderfully convenient. Random raindrops — big enough and, if they hit you, hard enough to remind you of hale in Germany — start to fall each mid-afternoon like clockwork. Then, the deluge begins. It means, each morning, after your wake-up call from the front desk, you have time to enjoy the sun, wind, and deepening your pale pink-to-bronze skin; then, together with friends, gather for a poolside lunch, leaving an inchthick coating of SPF 108 sunscreen covering the surface of the pool. The afternoon rainus-interruptus thus allows us time to pause and reflect, to contemplate the past and present, and see as far as we can into the future. I’ll go first. They say, “The world is as you are,” so let’s first shine the light of our
prescient insights on the little island, currently hosting your sunsoaked restoration.
none enjoy going in the ocean; it’s rather terrifying to them. That is, until recently.
Once you find yourself beyond the raucous and restless, late-night, club-resto lights and sounds of the greater Kuta-Seminyak area, Bali almost completely rolls up its streets and locks its doors not long after sunset, except for the occasional convenience store, just like in the Old Days, before tourism usurped Bali’s economy kings — the export of rice, processed fish, and rattan, teak furniture. “It takes a village,” and, here, every village is basically an extended, self-contained, group of families, tied together for generations by common residence and faith. Few travel farther from their homes than their feet can carry them, there and back in a day, unless they need to putter around the island for work; few care for outsiders, unless they’re helpful and required for their family’s sustenance. Except for fishermen and the occasional surfer, the Balinese have left the ocean to the priests as a place of ritual; almost
Like all the island and coastal cultures in this part of the globe, as the modern world has encroached on their quiet lives, enthusiasms for much of what the outside world offers has grown exponentially, just like everywhere else. But, it hasn’t reached the point, yet, where a fully integrated crossculture has taken root. Still, they try as hard as they can to make us feel right at home. But, unless those of us living and working here learn the language fluently, marry into a family, and by extension accept Balinese traditions as our own, we’re all still ‘bule’ to them.

Yet, they’re genuinely kind, helpful people. When I first came to this wild paradise, along with some beautiful friends, we got trapped on a back road, late at night, in a torrential rainstorm. The road in front of us was washed out. There were no streetlights in either direction. We were 5 minutes from
our villa but our driver didn’t know another way to get there but the road we were on. The street turned into a raging river, water lapping up over the sides of our car, and the odds we’d get anywhere, much less home, were dipping into the single digits. There’s no AAA, no roadside service you can always call, in Bali. You take your chances and hope for the best. Suddenly, there was a tap on the window. The rain was so loud we didn’t hear the boy pull up on his motorbike. Soaking wet, he asked if he could help. We had no idea how to tell him where we wanted to go. There are few street signs in Bali. The only thing we could think to do was to show him pics of the place, where we were staying, on our camera. It wasn’t until we showed him one of the closed front-gate that he smiled and motioned us to follow him. He’d never been inside, of course.
We followed him through the town, going back the way we came then through another town and another until the road we were on was barely wide enough for our car. As we went down an incredibly steep hill, he had to stop, get off his motorbike, and drag a huge branch out of the way; otherwise, we weren’t going any farther. After 60 minutes of this, in the pouring rain, he stopped and motioned us to pull closer. We thought, for sure, he was going to tell us he was lost and we were out of luck. When we turned down the window to talk with him, he smiled and pointed at our camera then at the front-gate across the road. He’d taken us home. We were ecstatic! We all thanked him and everyone started pulling money out of our pockets to show him how grateful we were. But, he wouldn’t take any. None. He smiled and drove off. What an angel! This is Bali, ladies and gentlemen. The little things, the human things,

count here. Sure, you can dance your panties or your pants off all night, in clubs where almost skyclad, young Indonesian women and men will do their best to hang all over you; go to restaurants where the only common language the help speak is almost exclusively from the menu; and, you can try to make a deal with a taxi driver or local shopkeeper, who’ll overcharge you every time, if they can. But, that’s only about money. If you let them, if you’re willing to look deeper, they’ll steal your hearts. Let them. It’ll be one of the best memories you’ll take home with you, I promise.

In the State of Fashion Blogging
BY Angelina What are a fashion blog and bloggers? Back then, bloggers were gaining tremendous popularity because of their fun, accessible style and uncensored opinion, a cherished antidote to aspirational fashion magazines readers no longer related to. But what glitters is not always gold. Have bloggers democratised fashion for the long run or are they too guilty of dipping into the industry’s less kosher sides? Fashion blogging beginnings: Individuality and naivety In the past, the fashion industry was proverbially hard to break into unless you were well-connected or rich. Along with early fashion blogs emerged the idea of the “democratisation of fashion”, which was supposed to shake fashion hierarchy to the core. In regards to bloggers, “democratisation of fashion” meant that if you had a cool, relatively high-traffic blog and great style that didn’t necessarily have to be all Chanel and Balenciaga, you could become part of the fashion industry without connections or education.
Fashion lovers were encouraged by the success of the first bloggers who quit their jobs to focus on blogging full-time and thousands of blogs started sprouting up worldwide. While many of those blogs were undeniably launched with the intention to catapult lithe, blonde, semi-stylish girls into online stardom, in the early days, fashion blogging was primarily about doing your own thing. It was honest. It was not nearly as calculated as today. Each blogger I was following five years ago had a distinct voice. They wore completely different things – you didn’t see the same handbag popping up on every other blog. They shared miscellaneous events from their life. Some of them posted political opinions. For many fashion enthusiasts misunderstood by their community because of how they dressed, fashion blogging was an outlet where they could finally express themselves without being judged. You only had to click the ‘Publish’ button to go from uptight coworkers staring at your frilly lavender blouse to readers applauding your uniqueness. After months of hesitation I started my own fashion blog. I was surprised how much my small town experience mirrored bloggers in fashion capitals. We went to
– 48 –
events as plus ones because no one in the industry knew we existed. 100 daily unique visitors was considered decent traffic. Extravagant gifting wasn’t a thing. I was exalted when a Swedish company sent me two temporary tattoos that took a month to arrive. Fashion blogging in 2013: Attack of the clones. Fast forward to 2013, the fashion blogging landscape has undergone major shifts. There are notable exceptions, but in general, fashion blogging is no longer about individuality. It’s about mediocrity. Fashion blogging today salutes reducing self-expression to a handful of common denominators: the ubiquitous Kenzo tiger jumper, Isabel Marant wedge trainers, ombré hair, Céline handbags, sheer maxi skirts. Individual fashion voices of the past have merged into one monotonous voice. Fashion bloggers look like each other’s clones. Fashion blogging today is about fitting in with the cool crowd. How ironic to think it originally emerged with the outcasts – people who loved fashion but couldn’t or didn’t want to be part of the cool crowd (the industry). Apart from the attack of the clones, you’d have to be blind not to notice fashion blogging has become unabashedly commercial. The main
issue here is an astonishing lack of transparency. I support sponsored content because bloggers need to pay the bills like everyone else, but keeping readers in the dark about it is unethical. Several top-tier fashion bloggers, as well as hundreds of smaller ones, are not in the habit of disclosing commercial affiliations and freebies. They deceive readers who believe bloggers endorse products they have purchased themselves, not received as a gift and got paid to promote them. We’ve seen it all before in fashion though – magazines failing to disclose advertorials and not giving editorial space to brands that don’t advertise in them. Another recent blogging gem is posting outfits consisting solely of pieces the blogger has received from brands. Is this really your style? Would you wear it if you didn’t get it for free? All of it? Do you read intelligent fashion blogs? Many people jump at every opportunity to accuse bloggers of being shallow, unethical and uneducated. But why do bloggers guilty of this so often have a massive following? When bloggers take criticism into account and share in-depth articles
or outfits not based on trends, we gather from the lack of feedback we receive that the vast majority of readers prefers the very things that give fashion blogging a bad rep – instant gratification, conspicuous consumption and absence of critical thought. There are many websites and forums dedicated to discrediting fashion bloggers (I say ‘discrediting’ instead of ‘criticising’ because comments on those websites often cross the line). People who frequent them read the blogs they ‘hate’ to get fodder for snappy discourse, boosting their traffic with multiple daily visits and rampant linking. Would it not be more fruitful to spend all this time supporting the bloggers you believe are ethical, have original style, are great writers? Or is this just another reflection of what people really like? Are fashion blogs the same as fashion magazines? The most popular fashion blogs share a single pivotal ingredient: aspiration. This is the same aspiration the fashion industry is relentlessly condemned for: portraying beautiful, unrealistic, unattainable lifestyles in editorial and advertising. It’s images of ultra-thin models with flawless photoshopped skin wearing
– 49 –
usd 10.000 outfits that make you buy perfumes and accessories – the cheaper products that drive approximately 80% of sales. Are top fashion blogs different from fashion magazines? Figures are slender, clothes expensive, locations cosmopolitan, food photogenic. For most readers, this lifestyle is beyond reach. A million girls would kill for this job. I don’t believe aspiration is detrimental by default, but if it exists in fashion blogging (and so prominently), it means fashion blogging is no different from the industry in general. As promising and refreshing as the idea sounded at the beginning, by conforming to industry standards, bloggers have not democratized fashion in the long run. In other words, you still have to be well connected or rich to break into the industry.

Top Seven Jewelry Trends for 2014
Bright primary colors and geometric shapes take center stage.
BY BEVERLY A new fashion season is beginning, which means it’s time to look at what will be hot for 2014 in jewelry trends! After researching runway, red carpet and market styles, I’ve discovered seven main trends to look out for this year.
It’s time to channel your inner kindergartner! Look for pieces in fun colors like bold red, primary yellow and bright green. You’ll also see geometric shapes in more styles to flatter everyone, like this sweet yellow boxy bangle from Céline. It makes a statement but could flatter a variety of outfits. All that glitters is gold. Ok, maybe not all that glitters, but gold is making a strong showing in jewelry (as well as in home décor trends). So pull back out those gold
– 56 –
pieces, and look for stores to be carrying more of this pretty metal. Between yellow gold and rose gold, there’s a gold for every skin tone. Be confident with gunmetal silver. If you’re going silver, consider using dark gunmetal tones. It makes a gorgeous contrast with clear crystals, or you could pair it with light pastel stones for summer. Gunmetal silver has an understated quality — bright or shimmering stones and crystals complement it best.
Go big and funky. Don’t be afraid to show your quirky side with jewelry. Go for that large jaguar pendant, layer on tons of bead necklaces, or pair your newest statement necklace with that crystal choker. Large, fun pieces are in style this year, so feel free to add a touch of playfulness to your accessories. There are no rules. If the proportions look right to you, go for it. Glow in Radiant Orchid. Pantone has chosen Radiant Orchid for the color of the year in 2014. Look for the deep purple hue to show up in statement necklaces, bangles and more. This rich color
looks beautiful paired with grays, other jewel tones, or as a pop of color with black or white. There are lots of options for you with Radiant Orchid. Get ready for statement collar pieces. Look for necklaces that fit close to the neck. While the long tassel styles that have dominated the past few years won’t disappear, collar pieces are starting to come back in. These don’t have to be large necklaces — a single, bold metal collar will make a statement. You can also play with adding in other trends like geometric shapes to make a unique and pretty collar necklace.
– 57 –
You can’t go wrong with vintage. This is near and dear to my own heart, and I’m so glad to see this trend continuing. Vintage style jewelry will make another strong showing in 2014. Look for pretty rhinestone earrings, glittery statement necklaces, and delicate bracelets that have a vintage flair.

HEART KINGDOM SNEAK PEEK-ERS BY AstriD
Sneakers are one of those trends (if you can call it that) that will absolutely never go away, after all who doesn’t mind the extra comfort they provide? It’s not just the functionally and convenience of sneakers that makes it a top trending item this season, it’s the style factor of pairing sneakers with dresses that has thrust the shoes as the image of breaking out of fashion rules and forging ahead new trends. “The moment of the model in six-inch heels and platforms, teetering down the runway doesn’t feel modern anymore,” Sasha Sarokin as a Buying
Director for Net-a-Porter told Business of Fashion. “It’s not only about the £700 designer shoe, but the sneaker she can wear in her everyday life.”
the aesthetic of girls who don’t usually step within a metre of a gym bag wearing a glamorous outfit completed by a pair of Air Max.”
Sneakers took to the runways in the most daring and impromptu fashion, giving us a reason to toss aside heels in favor of kicks. Oh! I’m getting egg-cited!
New Balance has become the champion of the trend. Despite being around for years, the Boston-based brand has suddenly reached its status. According to Asos, it is the second most popular sports footwear brand behind Nike – its sales grew by a mighty 900 per cent last year. People have been taken by New Balance’s minimal, understated design. Rihanna has been spotted numerous times in its W575s, Pharrell Williams is often papped in his and Céline’s creative director, Phoebe Philo, hit the runway to take her bow last year wearing a slouchy navy cashmere sweater, a pair of simple black trousers and the brand’s classic 620s, causing an influx in sales. Philo is also responsible for the revival of another pair of trainers in the minimalist camp – the Adidas Stan Smiths. The iconic all-white tennis shoes returned to stores last week and are already gracing the feet of every self-respecting fashionista. Sneakers are now the new heels, girls!
“Sneaker culture has been embraced by the fashion community”, says New Balance Marketing Director, Graham Dickens. Add this, Helen Attwood, Selfridges’ Shoes Buying Manager says, “There is something really refreshing about

HAPPY MIE
Hello? Is it mie you’re looking for?
the yummy dishes, mainly ChineseIndonesian noodles, evidently cooked with pride and from the heart. Open-sided and simple interiors come with communal concept, bench-style dining arrangements in dark woods (with the odd red silk cushion flung in for good measure) emitting a traditional Chinese charm not so common in Bali – more of a “Kalimantan Borneo” vibe, I was told. Happy Mie presents a homely, soul-kitchen environment: there’s no music, Wi-Fi or noisy TV screens blaring out Indo soap operas (hoorah!) and the only wall decoration, a massive photo menu above the open kitchen so you know your bakmis from your Bihun; And an amazing piece of Art from Bianca Timmerman. All a deliberate ploy, so that local or solo diners, warung novices, or whoever, can quietly chow-down without feeling intimidated or hassled. Grab a large glass of iced tea and embark on an odyssey of noodles and more. If like me, you’re a fan of Kwee Tiaw (Chinese-style white soft flat noodles made from rice flour) but can never find any on the island, you’re in luck, as Kwee Tiaw is star of the show here, served-up in a variety of dishes.
BY KATIE TRUMAN Or tasty home-cooked Chinese noodles and dumplings, or Indo favourites at time-warp prices? Then hotfoot it down to Warung Happy Mie in upper Kerobokan…. You may drive past it (which I did, twice), it may appear small, brightly lit and unassuming, but Warung Happy Mie is what I (and many other probably) have been looking for: great home-cooked warung
food with Chinese leanings and ridiculously well-priced. Happy Mie is a roadside family-run, Chinese-style warung, overseen by Yeanne (Make-Up Artist) her father and Chinese-Indonesian family (a cousin’s husband is the main cook), originating from around Java’s Yogyakarta area. Who cares about the no-frills décor (a total antithesis of what’s down the road in Kerobokan, it’s all about
– 68 –
I also seek out Hong Kong-style dumplings and here, they come in the form of Siomay (steamed) and Suikiaw Goreng (fried), delicate and moist filled with prawns and served on bamboo steamers, while fresh wontons, Pangsit, come filled with minced chicken. Look out for Chinese-style evening specials of sweet and sour stir-fried chicken. Indonesian favourites include, of course, mie (noodles): Bakmi Goreng (thin mie noodles),which also covers Bakmi Goreng Jogya,
a homage to the family hometown of Yogyakarta and Bihum Goreng (vermicelli noodles), wok-stirred with egg, finely chopped chicken or pork and bok choy greens.
include savvy foreign expats who live around this fast-developing Semer neighbourhood (between Canggu and Kerobokan) and even the odd designer, artiste or city slicker.
Classic Balinese staples, Nasi Goreng, Sop Ayam and Bakso (balls of either fish or pork in a sloppy noodle soup) also keep diners happy.
Slurping noodles beside me at the communal long tables, a well-known Chinese- Indonesian designer, who lives locally and apparently pops in regularly for his native comfort food.
All flavoursome enough, but spicing it up, try the house-made sambal; note any tastiness is not assisted by MSG, as this folks, is an MSG-free zone. What with Bali’s escalating – and in many cases, overinflated – dining costs (even in your local warung and padang) prices here are staggeringly cheap, the highest priced dish a mere IDR27,000 (yes you read correct) , with many dishes around the IDR 22,000 mark, keeping it real and rip-off free and perhaps mirroring the traditional interiors. Low pricing making it affordable for everyone to eat here; no wonder Happy Mie is popular, especially morning starts, supper time and the lunchtime rush.
Geez, I’m British and live a fair distance away, but you can bet your bottom Rupiah I’ll be popping in here regularly, too. With home-cooked, tasty ChineseIndonesian dishes and at these prices, looks like we will all end-up, “happy me’s!”
Mostly frequented by local and visiting Indonesians, patrons also

FASHION HOROSCOPE Aries
There should be dancing in the streets today, for you are part of a 6 billion strong survivors club, with some of the most challenging conditions, not of the year but in decades, finally over. While it will take several more weeks for things to ease back completely, you’re no longer moving towards challenging times and those challenging times will start receding in the rear view mirror from today. It’s time to celebrate, but also appreciate what you’ve learned in the process.
Leo
The Moon’s first visit to your financial sector since Venus returned is also the last before she leaves next week and financial matters as a whole take a back seat. Until then, this is a chance to put your financial instincts, desires and expectations on the same page, giving you a better sense of where things stand, what you have to work with and what you want to achieve, with the money gods smiling on you today.
Virgo
Taurus
As Mars, moving through your income sector, moves out of opposition with Uranus, for now the only planet in your financial sector, financial tensions that came to a head over the last few days start to ease back. It is the fact that neither will emerge the victor that puts you in a much better position on both the income and financial fronts, with a new sense of motivation and determination emerging, along with an appreciation of the need for balance.
Gemini
The last pin holding the extreme tensions of the last few days, which in turn were an escalation of all that has been building for weeks, is released today and this could create a dramatic falling apart, in terms of creating a fairly emotional day. Yet what is happening is a release of all that tension, which needs an outlet, but only because what has been holding you so rigid and almost trapped is gone. This is a good thing, a very good thing.
As the day progresses you’re likely to sense that something is shifting, that the tensions that had been building for weeks and locked into place over the last few days have finally lifted. What had a slow build up is likely to have a dramatic fall off on the other side, because most things have probably come to a head by now. With everything out in the open you’re able to begin the rebuilding phase, which is most likely to happen one word at a time. Just as tensions begin to ease and especially financial tensions, there is a rush of support from both work and professional forces that is providing a new and unexpected sense of confidence on the income front. With your professional instincts sharp, a clear sense of what you want professionally and the power to move mountains if you have to, this is the point where you’re able to turn financial instincts into a new sense of determination and motivation.
Cancer
Just as tensions really start to ease back, the Moon’s return to an adventurous part of your chart brings a reminder that it’s all about the journey, with a chance to start enjoying the breakthroughs that are now possible. As you not only wake up to the need for balance, but that the power to create that balance lies in your hands, you’re able to look to the future and ask ‘what now’, knowing you, not life has the answer.
Libra
Scorpio
One of the biggest challenges over recent weeks and more so over recent days, has been a challenge between staying productive and appreciating a need to pace yourself, knowing when to take time out. Where there have been work tensions you’re likely to find that from this has emerged an ability to work smarter, realising that it’s all about time management and boundaries. With Venus returning to your work sector next week to attract new opportunities, these revelations have come just in time.
–– 70 70 ––
Sagittarius
As the Moon makes the only visit to your home and family sector during Venus’ 4 week visit, there is a chance to get right to the heart of what is and isn’t important, giving you a new appreciation of the basics. As you near the end of what is likely to have been a short but intense week, home is where the heart will be, with both a chance to rest your tired bones and find some real pleasure. It’s the little things that will matter the most today.
Capricorn
The mechanics behind the tensions of recent weeks come undone today, with nothing keeping things wound so tight or bringing all the balance issues to a head. While tensions will dissipate a lot quicker than they built, with the Moon in your communication sector giving your emotional and intuitive responses a voice, this creates the potential to turn this into an opportunity for a breakthrough. Across the board, work to ensure the communication lines are open.
Aquarius
If nothing else, you’re emerging from some tense weeks with a new appreciation of a need for balance, but with the potential for a real breakthrough. With the Moon in your income sector you’ve got a nose for money as lucky Jupiter emerges from his final roadblocks and as he takes you into what are set to become some of the most successful and opportune months of the year for work matters and growth.
Pisces
While today may come disguised as a fairly ordinary day it is anything but and is instead the day when you can finally rest assured the storm has passed. The massive cosmic standoffs that have created so much tension over recent weeks and especially over recent days begin falling apart from today and with nothing to hold them back there is already a cosmic rainbow forming. Emerging from this is a new sense of resolve, especially when it comes to following your heart.
