It feels imperative that Fauve Magazine remains something you can touch. Enjoy the times when you have space to yourself, even for just a moment or two. FA’ EMPEL The Princess Warrior

by YONI Indonesian supermodel and celebrity Fahrani Empel (Fa’ for short) is not just a pretty face, she is multi-talented; from designer to awardwinning actress to activist of preserving Borneo’s rainforests. I had the pleasure of meeting her after finishing an amazing photo shoot (another one) and this is what she had to say.

We all know you as a supermodel and actress but you have now launched your own line of sunglasses called CAST, can you tell me more about this? I love designing sunglasses and it’s not too time-consuming. I think my designs are fresh, unisex, original and fashionable. I design a new collection every six months and it now retails in selected stores worldwide including Hong Kong, Milan, New York, Berlin, Tokyo, Australia and Bali. I recently saw Madonna and Lady Gaga wearing your sunglasses on the internet. You must be really proud, how did you manage to get them wearing your designs and how did it make you feel? I have this amazing PR in Paris so I have to thank them. I was in Borneo at that time and didn’t have any internet connection. The day that I came out of the lake I saw it on the television. I can say that was a big day in my life. You talk about Borneo with passion and it seems that you have given this your renewed direction, tell us more about this project of preserving the rainforests. I applied via an on-line video to become an “Action Agent” and from the 150 applicants I emerged as one of the 15 selected finalists. We spent around 20 days in the heart of Indonesia’s Borneo rainforests which is a part of pioneering ‘Deforest ACTION’ project trying to stop the relentless deforestation. Indonesia’s forests are the world’s lungs, yet its deforestation is the worst, with forests cut down at the speed of 300 football fields per hour.

Most people are closing their eyes and turn the other way but how do you create awareness and how can we help? This is a long-term project. It’s my country, so if I can create awareness and educate all those young kids, it may make a difference, kids are our future. There will be a documentary released next year worldwide. This Australian-produced documentary is most ambitious project ever created and documents eco-warriors of 100 days in the rainforest revealing their challenging, grueling and rewarding work trough DeforestACTION. The rainforest urgently requires serious money donations and with my contacts in the fashion and movie industry I hope to create awareness through that. For further information and donations please check the website: www.deforestaction.com We have seen you a couple of times in FAUVE, what do you think of this magazine? I think it’s fresh and different than other magazines. It focuses on fashion spreads. I enjoy being in it a hundred percent besides that I love the creative team behind it especially Jul. What are your plans for the future? Any exciting things coming your way? I will keep working on CAST and spent more time in Europe, Berlin in particular and The US, especially in New York. I am going to base myself there and will be networking in each continent. Besides that, I will keep Borneo’s project going as that is closest to my heart. I found my spiritual answer with Project Borneo, helping others and not thinking just of myself. favelapunk.tumblr.com www.casteyewear.com dfa.tigweb.org

HEALTH BY VERONICA Your skin is the largest organ of your body, the layer that surrounds and protects your body. Whether in your face or your hands, it is the first thing they see other people. Whether in cold or warm weather, is always exposed to elements that can damage it. Women are more likely to pay attention to this, especially anything concerning with the pass of time and wrinkles. The passage of time is inevitable, but you can help nature so that hydration, appearance and oil levels are appropriate according to your age and weather conditions in which you find yourself. In some cultures, tan skin is considered attractive and others fight for a porcelain white skin. Whatever your choice, you can always follow some natural tips to help you maintain a fresh and healthy skin. Our grandmothers already knew that one of the most beneficial elements to get a fresh face is a good night’s sleep. Rest is essential when to regenerate skin cells and, above all, avoid unwanted dark circles and bags deface your eyes. Besides using an appropriate treatment to your skin type, it is best to follow a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. But this is not always possible, right? Two things we all know do not help keep skin smooth are cigarettes and alcohol. Consistency is important; never sleep without wiping your face since the night is when your pores need to be clean and ready to regenerate your skin. Ideally, you will do the same thing after getting up in the morning, especially advised for combination and oily skin. Collagen is the substance that makes the skin look firmer, younger and full of vitality. The sun damages the cells and thus the ability to produce collagen, so it is always advisable to use sunscreen to protect skin from the sun.

24

Your diet can also help your skin. It is better to avoid as much sugar and white flour as possible, they cause inflammation in the tissues and reduces the ability to produce collagen and thus the ability of the skin to stay young and beautiful. Stress has effects similar to sugar in the body, causing inflammation in the tissues due to hormonal changes that occur. Try to eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, omega3 fats and low-fat protein. Also foods rich in sulfur and zinc are recommended as cucumbers, celery, carrots, pumpkin seeds, seafood, fish, chicken, egg whites, beans, lentils, soy, milk, beans and others. NATURAL FACIAL CLEANERS Normal skin: As a makeup remover, a cup of milk mixed with 3 drops of sunflower oil. Apply with a cotton pad and then rinsed his face with water. Oily Skin: Dilute 1/2 teaspoon baking soda in 2 tablespoons water. Apply with a cotton ball in circular motions. Rinse with water. Dry skin: Apply with both hands a tablespoon of olive oil. Make circular movements. Let it absorb and remove excess water. NATURAL FACIAL TONICS After a cleanser, a toner helps to complete the cleanup at the end and the beginning of the day. Ice: Apply ice wrapped in a cotton cloth as a compress. Honey: You can apply on pimples to accelerate the healing process.

FACIAL SCRUBS Oily Skin: Mix 1/2 teaspoon baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest and 3 tablespoons water. Apply with your hand on oily areas of the face with gentle circular motions. Remove with water. Dry Skin: Mix 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1 of brown sugar and juice of 1 lemon. Apply with your fingers in circular movements. Remove with water. Deep Scrub: Mix 3 tablespoons of salt and almond oil 3. Apply on oily areas of the face, with linear frictions. Gently massage in a circular motion. It is contraindicated for sensitive skin. Dark Circles and Swollen eyes: Horror!! You got up and your eyes reflect the excesses of the night before ..... Use cotton soaked with cold chamomile first under your eyes, then soak a small cotton piece of cloth in milk almost frozen and wet under your eyes. To revitalize and get a rested appearance look on your face, you can apply apple juice mixed with carrot juice over your face. OTHER BODY AREAS Hands and elbows also require as much care as the face, if not more. They are continually working and are an important element when presenting to others. Hand Scrub: Mix the juice of 1 lemon with a tablespoon of sugar. Apply on hands massaging well to form a creamy substance until sugar is diluted. Leave on for 5 minutes and rinse well. For Rough and Dry Elbows: Rube them before bed with pumice and then with a slice of lemon. Finally apply an exfoliating cream. You can use the same as for the hands. Soft Legs: Apply a good dose of honey the day after waxing. Leave it on for 30 minutes, remove with water. NATURAL FACE MASKS Masks should be applied with rotary movements, following the direction of the muscles of the face and ever upward. For best results, you should put on clean skin and relax while the mask is on.

Zen Garden Bali suggests you some meals to keep a healthy and beautiful skin

Exfoliating and Cleansing Mask: Mix 1/4 cup of oatmeal and a tablespoon of honey. You may add 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt. Apply to clean, damp skin. Leave on for 15 minutes and rinse with water.

The Beta-carotenes combined with Parley and Broccoli make this drink rich in Vitamin C & Vitamin E, collagen sources. Zinc will also help to your natural skin defenses.

SILKY SKIN JUICE: Carrot + Broccoli + Parsley

To Reduce Wrinkles: Beat 1 egg yolk and add 1/2 apple pulp. Apply on face and leave on for 20 minutes.

FISHERMAN SALAD: Grilled a Fish or your choice, source of Omega 3, with some drops of Olive Virgin Olive. End the grill crusting some seeds (black & white sesame and pumpkin seeds). On a bed of Mix Green Organic Salad include some cucumber thin slices. Top with the grilled fish and add an Italian Vinaigrette (extra virgin olive oil & balsamic vinegar). Pepper to taste.

For Red or Flushed Skin: Whisk juice or 1 cucumber pulp with the white of one egg. Embeds a cotton cloth with the mixture and apply on the face as a compress for 20 minutes.

balizengarden@gmail.com Facebook @ Zen Garden Bali

For Dry Skin: Avocado and Lemon. Mash an avocado and blend on along with 2 tablespoons lemon juice and 1 corn oil. Apply over face brush. Let stand 10 to 20 minutes.

GOSSIP

by SHANti

Wow, you little psycho bitches have been busy this month. Personally, I have been flying back and forth from LA, and I know you guys have been up to plenty of mischief because that’s all I’ve been hearing about. Break-ups, dildos, lezzies, drag-queens, war zones, stalker ex girlfriends, stalker current girlfriends, fist fights in the surf and Tahitian honey, high season did not miss the local crew. First of all, there I was having apertifs at Potato Head in my new Prouenza top and killer Alexander Wang heels with the skinny Mongolian, Keren Chinese, Yaz and Fa. Keren dishes that she had just broken up with her boyfriend of five years. It all started because one day they decided to buy a dildo in Bangkok. She finally had to be more active than him! She was tired of getting f*****d for 20 minutes then having to dildo him for one hour every time they do it! Scandalous! The Japanese gym freak? Yeah that Japanese gym freak. Well she’s been with so many Indonesian men, but finally she’s attracted to a white-y from Tahiti by the name of J. Wonder what’s going to happen, is she really going to give up the organic home-grown local produce in favor of some foreign temptation? One weekday night I decided to go to the Bali Joe Bar with my gay husband the skinny Mongolian. We met up with our friend, this gorgeous model (you can see him on the 69 Slam billboard on Sunset Road). When we found him, he was being undressed by a drag queen on stage! I love it how models can be famous- he is the image of Calvin Klein in France, Benetton and so on- and unpretentious as well and can appreciate being slammed by a lady boy. Have to been to the Friday nights at Metis? Everyone effing loves it! Amazing drinks and I don’t even have to get someone to buy them for me. So there I was with my besties and I saw something very interesting. Ibu Make-up is a nasty girl, usually only attracted to foreigner. But there she was with her Indonesian instructor from the best gym in town, French kissing and really looking like they were in love. Even nasty girls can fall in love.

I was at Echo Beach in Canggu, sunbathing the other week with the new hottie I’ve been seeing (hands off her you freaks! You know who you are!) and there was some drama in the water. Some chick dropped in on a dude, and he straight up punched her! Then they paddled back out and got in a huge fight! Who punches a girl?!?! Indonesian surfy gay hottie #1 tried to break it up, girl ended up punching him! SO he backed off and put his hands up. Seems like the two psychos were just looking for a fight… Also you know those girls with huge personalities, everyone’s best friend but secretly a huge control freak? Well I know one such girl, and she was a raging bitch to me about 3 years back when I was just starting out. I guess she saw something she was intimidated by, and rightly so. But after her under-handing lying conniving gesture, I knew what she was really like. So aside from gaining, like, 15 pounds (I think they kick you out of LA at that point) her boyfriend just left her for another man. Girl you gotta get real! With everyone else and yourself! Andrew Campbell of I-Mag is back from Syria, this is pretty amazing actually. He lots a little bit of baby fat wink wink, but we hardly noticed he had any in the first place. Speaking of the I-Mag team, the new Americana ed has been dating a surfie from Oz, and his ex showed up in town to stalk him. Now she’s been stalking him online to see if he’s the real deal. Pauvrecita. Don’t worry, there is always another. And as for the BOMB! Fa finally told us who she’s been seeing. We’ll spill the name in the next issue, but we can say that she is a she, Fa is straightly gay at this point, and is the midst of a little lezzie drama. That sounds HOT. Well lots of love from me until next time you little psycho bitches. And don’t forget to email me in case you have anything you need to get off your chest, I know how hard it can be to keep a big juicy secret. And I’m here to help! shanti.says@gmail.com

NILUH DJELANTIK high heel’s empress Photo © Diego Verges 28

by KATIE Niluh’s passion for shoes began as a child. Today she is a world-class shoe designer and manufacturer, with celebrity clients Uma Thurman and supermodel Gisele Bundchen wearing her high heels. Niluh’s understanding and idea of femininity is expressed so clearly through her designs. Unrelentingly down to earth and with a girlish charm she chats with me about how her fetish for shoes began and how she created her High Heel Empire, Niluh Djelantik. Can you tell me a little bit about your background? Where you come from and your upbringing? I was born and raised in Bali. My mother was a single parent. I was born in a small village in Kintamani at the foot of Mount Batur. My whole generation of family was in the trading business. There are mostly women in my family. That gave us a strong personality. At the same time we spoiled the men. We treated them like princes. However, they had a lot of respect for us. There wasn’t male domination in the family. Its different than the Balinese culture, which is a patriarchy where the man is in charge of the family. Is your ambition and idea to go out into the world a part of your nature or by your mothers example? It was my mother and my youngest auntie. In Balinese culture, you don’t travel. Which I have done quite a bit of. The tradition stops us from traveling unless you are quite open minded and have a different kind of education in the family. It was my Aunt and my mother who wanted me to see what was going on outside of Bali. When I was 19, they decided to send me to Jakarta. I didn’t know I was going to continue my studies there. At the time it was just for holiday. It changed my life. Can you describe your company? How did it begin? I started it in 2003 with Nilou as our first brand as I wanted to do something that I love, and I love shoes. My idea was to go more up market. So we create a high quality leather sandals on our first collection. One year later, in 2004 we were in 20 countries. We also started developing for other brands. We re-branding Nilou with Niluh Djelantik in 2008. What do you love about shoe designing and how do you begin to design a shoe? To be honest, I’m not a shoe designer. I love shoes. But I don’t draw. I don’t sketches. I know the technical part of it. And I translate the design of the shoes right on to the shoes lasts. Its not like giving the drawing to the boys (her team of shoemakers). Most of the time I create the actual pattern on the shoe lasts and then I give it to the boys to make the finish shoes . I do it all directly onto the shoes, playing with designs and materials. I would not be able to make the shoes without the boys and they wouldn’t be able to translate the design without me. I work really closely with the boys. Since they are men, they don’t actually wear the shoes, So all small details that give the esthetic part of the shoes will be done under my direction. What are the inspirations for the designs? The inspiration come from many sources, As I spent most of my time at our atelier so I have endless opportunity to create and play with the materials we have and to show the design to the boys. I also love to look through the fashion magazines, lookbook and high end catalogues. I don’t follow their thought. But I like to combine all the different elements of designs I like to create a whole new shoe. With Niluh Djelantik shoes you can recognize the special touch that we put on every design such as leather stitching detailing, braided leather and also woven work on the shoes. Who is your favorite shoe designer? Yves Saint Laurent. His design very clean and elegant. I like the Tribute Collection. I own most of them. I’m a fanatic. As for our development I also collect other brand such as Manolo, Louboutin, Pierre Hardy, Jimmy Choo. We do

not copy their style as I am against it but I regularly buy these brand for more technical part or it, so the boys can learn from this high end brand about their technique and t shows the boys how we can create beautifully made shoes with our own signature. How did you know how to make high end shoes? Before I met the boys, I was already a shoe collector. I’d been working in Jakarta for almost 8 years. I learned about what makes a good shoe. You also see the finishing of the shoes by buying it. When we first started, we were making flat leather sandals, but not yet high heels. But I love heels. In 2004 when we enter Australian market that when we really started creating high heeled shoes with less quantity. Taking one week to make one pair of shoes to try before we start the production. How would you describe your shoes? They are beautiful. elegant, classic. Timeless style and comfortable. The shoes we created in 2005 are still the best selling in 2012, 7 years later. The customer never say its outdated. Some of 30 pairs of the same style in different colors. What were your greatest challenges in creating your success? To keep it together with the boys. Its more difficult to keep the brand than the build the brand. The culture of the Indonesian artists, you really have to keep them together to keep it disciplined and to respect the international customer and Indonesian customer in terms of quality and time. The nature of the artist think to create something using their mood. I let them play with their mood to make the shoe but we need to think from the customer’s point of view. Customer service is the most important aspect of keeping the brand going. This builds a sense of belonging. Especially if you are doing something purely handmade. Shoes are very different than anything other product. I don’t want to make it a global brand, I like it small. That is the challenge to keep the very same quality product for 9 years. What would you contribute your greatest successes to? To be able to do something that I loved as a full time job. I don’t call it a job. That is my biggest achievement. I don’t call myself successful, otherwise there would be no recognition of all the challenges that happen in life. I love providing beautiful shoes to all of the ladies out there who love high heels. How did you get celebrities from New York and LA to wear your shoes? and which celebrities wear your shoes? They came to our stores and bought the shoes that they love during their Bali visit. We also have some stylist who came and purchase the shoes for the the actress movie shooting purpose. Gisele Bundchen and Julia Roberts are some of them. what would you say you are most passionate about? I am most passionate about life. With life we have, we have the opportunity to experience the beauty of our everyday journey with the people around us, to learn from our experiences and mistakes, to share our joy and happiness as well as to be grateful what we have. If you could do or be anything/anyone else, what/who would that be? I am happy to be who I am. With all the flaws and imperfection that completes me. I do not wish to be anyone else. www.facebook.com/niluhdjelantik niluh@niluhdjelantik.com

SPIRITUALITY

karma KONVERSATIONS The Unequivocal Distraction of Contentment by SWATHIMAA

Welcome back. It’s been a month since we last chatted and while we can’t actually exhaust topics like these, I feel moved to chat anew. And, what’s more appropriate to chatter on about in the last sun-drenched, bikini-clad, oil-slathered, winecoolered, sweat-soaked days of summer than…contentment. I’ll go first. Spiritually speaking, ‘seeking happiness’ or contentment is oxymoronic. Actually, it’s more moronic than anything else. ‘Harvesting contentment’ is a more realistic way of describing it since happiness is an automatic side effect. A metaphor may help here. Richard Branson’s Auntie Joyce, who, in the 1970s, was the family funding force, which helped transform her gangling, dyslexic, “Virgin” nephew into a ubiquitous mega-visionary, was fond of saying, “Money doesn’t bring happiness. Money makes things happen.” It’s a force, a powerful means to many ends but not an end in itself — nor is its sole purpose “happiness”. Certainly, this applies to more than just seed capital. Like so many of life’s important things — those that inspire and influence us to create something, anything, everything that becomes part of our personal experience — money, though intangible in itself, possesses a tangible power. Yet, power never creates a singular result or side effect; it doesn’t work that way. A pebble thrown in a pond may make a single splash but it also stirs up the mud and sends ripples (plural) across the entire surface. In that same way, life, love, wealth, etc. are not solely about personal happiness, certainly not contentment. Life’s great intangibles are more about turning a glass that’s half-empty or half-full into one that runneth over. But, if happiness or contentment is what you’re shooting for, remember this: neither Cupid nor William Tell ever hit their targets by shooting straight at them; they aimed high; there’s a necessary arc; aim low and you’ll miss your mark. In life, love, and in money, aim for a side effect (like happiness) and you’ll miss out. Contentment implies an immovable feast. We’ve feasted and we’re happily, immovably sated. As a goal or life-choice, wanting to feel content, by definition, means we want everything to stay just as it is. The more contented we want to feel, the less we want to have to do to feel that way. We want life served on a silver platter. But, here’s the thing: if you want to be served, you gotta pay for the privilege. And, it doesn’t come cheap. Those who get ‘served’ seem to appreciate the feast — and the immovable aftermath — more than the ones who create and prepare it in the first place. The Served feel entitled. And, that’s the problem. Where does this inherent sense of entitlement come from? Karma.

Last time, we discussed the present karma of our world: our life circumstances are 80+ % negative and a mere 20% positive. But, it’s not just about the shit hitting the fan most everywhere you look. The source is not just external. One of the fundamental sources of all this negativity is internal: our predominant focus on egoistic self-satisfaction, which relies on personal contentment as a goal. Our own egoism is a magnet for our karma and 80+% of that is bad. Here’s the ironic truth: seeking happiness implies you’re not happy, which implies your underlying motivation is actually not happiness — it’s the need to fight against (or get around) the challenges you’re faced with, which includes outside negativity and your own internal blocks. So, naturally, you’ll fall for the quick fix, the magic pill offered by distraction. And, let’s face it, the world is filled with distractions. We make sure of it. It’s the discomfort of your internal battle with your blocks and negativity that pushes you to indulge in the pursuit of contentment, which throws you deeper into the cycle of karma instead of being free of it. Now, we have to amend our statement. Happiness is a side effect and seeking it is a self-perpetuating distraction. Neither of these is in line with the wisdom of the sages or Auntie Joyce nor are they the way to fulfillment. So, how do we transform ourselves from being half-empty or half-full into an overflowing cup of bliss? Here’s the secret: Life is God’s way of making things happen. By its very nature, its automatic by-product is happiness. Test this. To be one with happiness — not feel separate and needing to seek it — drop the whole “I want to be happy” thing. At least, drop the “I want to” part, the seeking, and allow yourself just be with it, to experience what’s happening, and be a co-creative part of it…and you’ll enjoy the automatic byproduct. To quote the song, “Don’t worry. Be happy.” If you track the path of real contentment, it doesn’t run from outside inward; it runs from inside outward. I’m not saying, don’t enjoy sunset drinks with friends or those new pair of Louboutins. Just enjoy each one for what it is, be grateful, and get on with it. Summer’s done. Autumn is coming. The leaves are changing — embrace how brilliantly they do it! Look forward, not back. Aim high. Be like the lotus that rises above it all in its glorious beauty. Be who you are and follow your heart. Whether you’re an ancient sage or a modern one or one in the making, the technique is the same: make something happen… and be happy. Invest in yourself, and, for God’s sake and your own, share with others. Happiness and contentment will be yours forever. Big hugs. monica ku by julhenry From a small town of Bali to the London fashion school and now based and back in Bali. Indonesian fashion designer Monica Ku (1984), explains her creative path and experiences as a clothing designer. Following the debut of a line of haute couture in London for Emilio de la Morena, today Monica pursues her own fashion brand which includes two ready-to-wear collections presented in Australia, France, and Indonesia. Passionate, determined, with an imagery that is so vast that each collection comes as a complete surprise. I meet her in her house in Seminyak. A modern home sweet home with grey concrete floor & pure white walls, reflecting a fundamental aspect of her style: contrast. This year she’ll create an amazing new collection Haute-Couture that I had the chance to perceive sketches… Tell me a little about yourself. Where are you from? What’s your educational background? What are your general professional and non-professional interests? I was studying in Bali, until year 7 of my Junior High. I then went overseas at the age of 13. In Australia, I went to an Anglican Girl’s School, St. Mary’s, which was 40mins away by train from the city centre of Perth, Western Australia. I majored my high school year, studying fine arts and design, as I was very passionate about art histories and artistic techniques as well as the varieties of media used in art works, while also, knowing that I will definitely pursued my career in the artistic field, of course. After my High School graduation, I continued my studies in London at Central Saint Martin University of Arts & Design, graduated with (BA) Honors Degree in fashion Design & Marketing in 2007.

General professional Interest… Well career wise, I’d like to be able to develop further of my passed down family’s company and its renewed fashion brands and concept, which are IO/CO and sook, while at the same time, I am hoping to pursues my artistic path in the level of haute couture. General non-professional Interest… hmm…I love reading books on psychology and philosophy, then…., I’d love also to able to travel around the world, learning and appreciating different cultures , landscapes and their history or gastronomies. Life is so short, might as well see everything with your own eyes while you still can and enjoy what life has to offer, I believe. When did you realize you wanted to become a fashion designer? If my memory serves me right, I think I was already quite passionate about wanting to be a fashion designer, since , I knew how to draw a stick figure with a dress on….(lol)…I think I was still at the kinder garden then… What does fashion mean to you? I believe… Fashion is a reflection of someone’s confident in him/her self and persona. It took courage to be who you are and be confident to wear the things you find beautiful and expose your originality the way you are to the world. Ignoring of course…the world’s idea of “image” and the peer pressure of not being an outcast, etc..etc..., Fashion has to be you and your own personal trend. What matters to you most as a fashion designer? Developing a few mass production brands such as IO/CO and sook I came to realize the importance of your previous question “ what fashion means to me?” IO/CO is specifically design for certain niche in the market, where women’s comfort and confidence are the most essentials. To make them feel and look beautiful in the simplicity of the garments design yet able to expose their elegance when wearing my designs. As for sook, it is a mixture of designs, created also for a broader niche market, where we emphasizing our clients’ own self-confidence and identity. We carried specific design that let their minds to wander and to figure out their own trend for their own fashion. Not a global fashion trend! ..but, their own sense of trend!

Where do you get your inspiration? I take my inspiration from observing the world’s wonders and its contents as well as its people. They are so fascinating, so varies and so adventurous, and that….. somehow, allows me to squish something interesting out of it, either that for my creativity fuel or my life philosophy. Who are some of your favorite designers? My favourite designer are Comme des garcon; for its amazing concept in each theme of their collection, Yohji Yamamoto; for his intriguing cuts and simplicities; Martin Margiela; for its unique approach to a concept in its marketing as well as designing the garments; Anne Demeulemeester, for the collection I love to wear for my self. What are your favorite colors to work with and why? I love to wear black myself, but for my designs or collection, I really don’t have a preference, its usually always based on the mood I was inspired with during the process of creating the collection. Do you prefer sketching designs or actually constructing them? I like to do both. The sketching for me is a necessity process for developing a design, while, constructing the design for me is a process I have to go through after getting warmed up with the sketches. Most of the time ‘the constructing’ always became very interesting, like having to solve a jigsaw puzzle, it triggers me with more inspiration and creativity, because you touch and feel and you play around your way when trying to construct it, and sometimes even ended up with something more amazing than your initial sketches. Tell me about the process of sketching a design. What kind of paper and pencil/pen do you use? I don’t really have a process that I think I can logically explain when sketching my design, it just comes depending on which media I decide to use to complete my illustrations. But,…If you are that curious, you are welcomed to come to my studio and I will show you the steps, that will be easier for both of us I would presume…lol For my illustrations, I usually used different type of paper as it depends on the paint I used…but I used a lot of paper from ‘canson’ (a paper brand), I work with many different media, sometimes I will be using inks, or water colors, poster paint, or collages…it really is depending on the mood I’d like to project for that illustration I would say. How would you define your personal style? mm…I’m not sure how to explain it…hey!!...isn’t it s’pose to be yours to define me?…(lol)… Anyway, I think My designs are the representation of my beliefs of what fashion should be, therefore, that’s my style! If you are asking me about my personal style?... My style is my trend, and my reflection of me I believe. What do you think about Fauve magazine and blog? Very intriguing blog and magazine, …it has the most amazing fashion spreads, which shows so much creativities and inspiration… and its contents is as interesting as those big magazine. It’s the way to go FAUVE!!! It’s just great!

MUSIC

KARMA TRIO three times the charm

Indra Gupta

Erik Sondhy

Sandy Winarta

by RACHEL Karma Trio is a musical project that came about when 3 veterens of the local jazz scene: Erik Sondhy (Keys), Indra Gupta (Bass) and Sandy Winarta (Drums) decided to whip up a fusion album combining Jazz and the traditional balinese style music. The album was produced by the trio themselves and was officially launched in September. I had the pleasure of chatting with the band members about this project during their album launch in OAZIA Spavodka. Share with us the process of the creation of the album? Erik came up the musical idea of fusing balinese music with jazz. He called us up to jam at antida studio. And from there we improvised all together, none of these tracks were composed and rehearsed beforehand. We wanted a natural vibe, thats why this kind of style cant be rehearsed, it’ll loose its meaning. So what’s the genre of music in this album? The style of music is traditional balinese mixed with modern jazz. The idea was to not use traditional instruments like the gamelan, but to utilize modern instruments and play it in the style traditional Balinese musicians play… of course fusing in the jazz elements. since its improvisation did you manage to play the same songs in the CD live? Hahaha yes…. well we try to! as close as possible! But it’s improvised so whatever comes it comes. Did you enjoy playing live? Definetly! we especially like the crowd tonight… its not a lot but the audience really listens. Instead of having large crowd with many people, because this kind of music takes a lot of concentration to play and can’t be enjoyed in a noisy environment. It makes us happy to see the crowd listen.

LOOK AFTER

bumi sehat “Every mother counts and healthcare is a human right.” ~ Ibu Robin Lim (cnn hero of the year 2011)

BY YONI In 1994, our founder, Ibu Robin Lim, began providing health services for pregnant women and children under five for free in the area of Ubud, Bali based out of her home in Nyuh Kuning village Over the next decade as demand grew and knowledge of her services became widespread, others joined together with Ibu Robin to support the iniative of providing care for women and children of need. The original Bumi Sehat clinic is located in the village of Nyuh Kuning, outside of Ubud, Bali in Indonesia. The community health center has 2 birthing rooms, a postpartum recovery area, and 3 general health treatment areas. Through a variety of weekly clinics, ongoing birth services and 24-hour a day emergency health services, the Bali clinic provides approximately 9,000 consultations and more than 550 births per year. As a popular tourist destination, Bali was economically devastated by the 2002 and 2004 Bali bombings (due to the resulting decline in tourism). Currently, Bali’s economy is also suffering from the worldwide economic crisis that further restricts local tourism. The majority of families living in Bali are economically dependent on local tourism and therefore, the numbers of families living in poverty has subsequently increased over the past 7 years. Many families are unable to pay for health services, and without access to affordable health services, many individuals would not be able to receive treatment for health problems. In addition, Bumi Sehat is currently raising funds to build a larger, purpose-built facility that will allow us to see more patients. Safe, Gentle Birthing Services At Bumi Sehat we provide prenatal care, labor and birth support, postpartum care and breastfeeding education. Our midwives are skilled at providing gentle birthing techniques intended to offer women a place of dignity to give birth, reduce pain, decrease interventions and cesarean sections, and to imporve the baby’s health. Our gentle birthing practices put mothers and families at the center of the birthing process by supporting their labor in safe and empowering ways. This gives women the capacity to give birth naturallly without the use of medical intervention, which can cause more risk for the mother and baby. Safe, gentle, birthing practices such as water birthing, early skinto-skin contact between mother and baby, delayed cord cutting

54

and the use of herbs and homeopathic alternatives instead of pharmaceuticals, all contribute to healthier births, healthier mothers and babies. To ensure babies are well-nourished and less likely to suffer from illness or malnutrition, we support breastfeeding at Bumi Sehat. Moments after birth new mothers are encouraged to put baby to breast to enable them to receive the full benefits that mother’s milk can deliver. We also send mothers home with breastfeeding support pamphlets to answer any questions they may have once they return home. As part of our gentle birthing services, Bumi Sehat offers weekly yoga classes for all expectant mothers in the community. Yoga, during pregnancy, can help prepare a woman’s body for a safe, natural birth by increasing flexibility and enhancing body-mind awareness. Our bi-weekly acupuncture clinic also is available for those in the community that may be experiencing infertility issues. Acupuncture has been shown to be successful in treating many infertility problems that both a man and woman may face. www.bumisehatbali.org

YOUTH CENTER OF BUMI SEHAT In 2006, discussions with village women led Robin to expand her focus from childbirth, and look at ways to help local youth, including some of the children she had delivered years before. BY YONI A Youth Center is Born In 2007, with the help of generous supporters who donated the use of a building and several computers, Bumi Sehat established a Youth Center in Ubud, giving young people valuable life skills, beginning with English language and computing. There are now over 240 enthusiastic young people from the Gianyar region attending the center; the students practice English in a conversational setting that helps increase their confidence. A team of Balinese staff, teachers and international volunteers work together to grow the center’s capability and capacity, with plans to extend into vocational training programs in 2012-2013. Until recently only English, computing and music were offered at the “center”, which doubles as a junior school classroom in the daytime. Environmental Awakening However, with the assistance of volunteering coordinators and volunteer teachers from countries all over the globe, the center is extending its facilities to incorporate programs such as Organic Gardening & Recycling. Australian volunteer, Jose Nunez, who has contributed his time and knowledge to other non-profit organisations such as Slukat Learning Center over the past three years, knows the power of providing the children of Bali with these environmental programs. “When the Balinese children are shown the devastating impact of bad waste management and disposal on their island, they are keen to help protect Bali. They want others in their villages to recognize the importance of recycling and environmental awareness, and gain the knowledge to have a positive impact on the modern world.”

In October 2011, one of Bumi Sehat’s AVID (Australian Volunteers International Development) volunteers, Jen Richardson, began discussions in post-tsunami Aceh with community representatives, and youth leaders themselves. “Many of these are the sole surviving members of their families. They know they are the leaders of the future and they are determined to give themselves and their peers the best possible future. The idea of the Youth Center appeals because it gives them a focal point, somewhere to call their own and somewhere to learn new skills”. Jen is now seeking international sponsorship and support, and making plans with those local leaders to build a second youth centre, on the grounds of the Aceh clinic in 2012. For further information on the Volunteering Programs at Yayasan Bumi Sehat Youth Center, please contact us through our website. www.youthcenterbali.org www.facebook.com/youthcenterbali

Volunteers are Invaluable Many of these centers, such as Bumi Sehat’s Youth Center, find the input from foreign volunteers invaluable. Their contribution helps the centers expand and the Indonesian students are stimulated by the interaction with people from other countries. Bumi Sehat Youth Center is currently expanding its volunteering programs, offering teaching positions to competent travelers and locals who wish to contribute to the classes offered by the center. Before they leave their own country and throughout their volunteer placement, International and Indonesian volunteer coordinators provide support to all the Center’s volunteers. This includes help with social visas, accommodation, and in-classroom teaching assistance. Post-Tsunami Impact At the same time, Bumi Sehat is also committed to extending its support in the devastated region of Aceh in western Indonesia; the health clinic there provides safe births for many local women, and also treats 1,500 local people who attend the clinic for help with general disease or accidents every month.

6. Correct eyeliner and finish it off with Long Lash Mascara or Sensitive Mascara is perfect for a natural look.

Cut the lashes to desired length if lashes are too long with Eyelash Scissor. Bend the lashes lightly to shape them then apply Adhesive Black on the back of the lashes and let the glue dry for a few seconds. Meanwhile curl your own lashes, this will allow your own lashes to blend in with the false one when applied. Start to fixate the lash in the outer corner of the eye then press it o sn gently, as close as you can to your own lashes. Hold still till dry.

7. Make a thin line underneath the eye with Gel Eyeliner Black using brush #102, working from the outer eye.

8. The points, where your brow starts and end, should be on the same level, as if you are looking at a straight line.

Blend the eyeliner with brush #110 and apply Microshadow Pollution to create a smokey look. Finish the look with Sensitive Mascara on the bottom lashes.

Once you know your basic brow shape, you can start trimming. Always define brows from the centre or nearer to the end where the hair is more scattered. Use an Angle Brush #210 and Tri Brow for a natural result. Apply Brow Set Fix, clear or tinted, to firm your brow.

PROFILE

lak kulnthomyotin FROM TOP MODEL TO TOP AGENT

BY YONI International model SiriLak Kulnthomyotin (Lak) is not difficult to miss. Her exotic beauty will catch your eye immediately. Hailing from Bangkok but spending a fair time a year in Bali she decided to pass on her experiences to other models by creating her own model agency; AREA Management. We sat down over a juice and this is what transpired. You stopped modeling a while ago but can you tell me how you got into it? When I was 18 I lived in Michigan to study at their University, a local agency scouted me and introduced me to an agency in Chicago. I decided to stay and study International Finance at the University of Michigan. I started modeling full time at the age of 20. At first I modeled in Ohio, Michigan and Chicago the so called ‘tri state’ but in 2002 I moved to New York for a year. I did a lot of casting but there was not much work for me. Modeling in New York is very competitive. Back in that day it was different, I am Asian and not many agencies had work for me. If they already had an Asian looking girl they wouldn’t take on another one, nowadays its different, there is more work for Asian looking girls. Being a model yourself you decided to start your own agency, what was the reason behind it? I partnered first with a different agency but didn’t like the way they work and in which direction they were going. Then I decided to start my own agency together with fellow model Shane, we were both modeling in Bangkok at that time. It was a year preparation but the final result is that we are one of the most successful agencies here. We specialize in commercials and as a model myself I think I can relate to my models and understand them better, how to deal with rejection, how to act at castings and how to present themselves in general. I can use my own experiences. Because of this my models feel closer to us, we are more like a family. When seeing your models in action, you never miss to be in front of the camera instead of being now behind the scenes? It’s nice to be behind the camera for a change and I am always proud of the result. I like to mingle and networking and during a shoot I have the time to do this.

What are you looking for when recruiting or scouting for new models? I always try to find models that have mixed blood in them, I think they have that unique look that I am looking for besides that I look for cute faces and not too skinny as that doesn’t look good on video. When I scout a model and she is too skinny, I ask to put on some weight which is in the modeling world a bit strange. Overall I look for healthy looking girls. Have you ever thought of bringing AREA Management to Bali? I have considered this but I think Bali is too small, there are already good agencies here so I don’t think that Bali needs another one. We did a couple of commercial shootings here for the Conrad Hotel and Skala but I like to keep Bali mainly as my holiday destination. So for now, we want to keep it only for direct booking as models would love to come to Bali. Can you describe yourself in one word? My friend said once that the word to describe me is ‘Vivacious’. I don’t have one word to describe all of me, I would say; energetic, hyper, easy going and low maintenance. When not working what is it that you do in your spare time? I love to cook for my boyfriend, especially healthy food other than that I like to go to the gym and hang out with my friends. Very simple but with loads of happiness. What do u think about Fauve Magazine & Blog? This magazine is good. Compact but full with goodies. Very nicely done. And this next issue is going to be the first published one, featuring everything Asian. It’s very unique. And our model, Justin will be on it too! so it is very exciting. I’m definitely looking forward to see more of Fauve!!!

Aries If you don’t feel particularly inspired by the new season’s fashions hitting the shops, it’s less about them and more about you. You’re just not that into it yet but you will be, especially once Venus returns to a more playful and creative part of your chart, early September. However, from later this month a sense of passion will set it, which is when the concept of change will start making an impact. Taurus This is a month for really challenging your excuses, especially when it comes to all those ‘one day’ promises. As the Moon makes his last visit to your sector of travel, adventure, learning and discovery while Pluto, planet of change and revolution is in retrograde motion; Venus is challenging them. From her position in a smart and intellectually savvy part of your chart, Venus is asking the tough questions as to why not? Gemini From his position in your financial sector, where he’s sharpening your financial instincts and giving you a nose for money, the Moon finds herself in opposition with Venus over in your income sector. This may create some financial tension but as this is the only wakeup call Venus will get during her 4 week visit to your income sector, this comes when you can least afford to fall asleep at the wheel. On both the financial and income fronts you’re able to turn tension into motivation. Cancer Just 2 weeks ago and in her early days in your sign Venus, planet of love moved into opposition with Pluto, in your relationship sector. At that time the Moon was aligned with Venus and on the side of your heart and needs, putting pressure on your relationships. Just 2 weeks on the Moon has returned to your relationship sector to look at things from the opposite perspective, putting pressure on your heart to take your relationship needs seriously, while the door is still open to second chances. Leo Just few weeks to the day before Pluto is due to turn direct in your work sector the Moon has returned to give things a nudge and to provide the clues and hunches needed to make these final weeks in retrograde motion count. With Pluto slowing down and the doors to the past about to close, keeping your finger on the pulse and your ear to the ground is essential. With new doors already opening on the income front, next month’s turnaround on the work front will come just in time. Virgo As the Moon makes his last visit to a romantic, creative and playful part of your chart, for the last time before Pluto turns direct here in few weeks, he’s being challenged by none other than Venus, planet of love. With the door open to second chances or a chance to revisit the past with a different perspective, Venus is challenging you to both keep it real but also to listen to your heart. You can’t change the past but you can change how you let it affect you now.

70

Libra With Venus leaving your career sector in the next couple of weeks and especially as she’s the last planet to move through for the year and especially with a Full Moon in your work sector later in the month, it’s important to take any work/life balance issues that surface today seriously. It’s an opposition between the Moon, moving through your home and family sector and Venus that temporarily puts your home and professional lives into conflict, revealing where there is still work to do. Scorpio The Moon’s monthly visits to your communication sector and his monthly encounter with Pluto, planet of change and revolution and your ruling planet always provide an opportunity to get the communication lines open. But as the Moon makes his last visit while Pluto is in retrograde motion this gives you one last chance to really focus on unsaid words, using the gift of hindsight to say now what couldn’t be said then. Sagittarius As the Moon makes his monthly visit to your income sector this will present as a bit of a mixed bag, but with a need to take it all on board and treated as valuable. As the last visit before Pluto turns direct, the nose for money this gives you will allow you to sniff out any second chances or where there are still stones left unturned. However, this puts the Moon in opposition with Venus in your financial sector, creating some financial tension but also the right wakeup calls at the right time. Capricorn Don’t be surprised if there is some personal and/or relationship tension this month, for it’s just the Moon’s return to your sign putting her in opposition with Venus, planet of love over in your relationship sector. On both fronts this is an important wake up call, at what is an important time on both the personal and relationship fronts and especially when it comes to balance between knowing what you need from your relationships and what they need from you. Aquarius The Moon is not only in an intuitive part of your chart today there is a strong sense of nostalgia and hindsight in the air. This makes it not only important to listen to and trust your intuition today, but to give yourself permission to let your mind wander, especially when it or your daydreams feel the urge to take a trip down memory lane. This is not about what this is trying to tell you, with over thinking cutting this valuable process short. Pisces With the North Node due to leave your career sector, you’re about to lose all your professional focus. Yet instead of compensating for that by remaining as professionally focused as possible there’s a call to ease back. So long as you continue to trust your professional instincts and sense of direction and continue to work smarter, there is nothing to be gained by over doing things.
