December 2016 A Monthly Newsletter of First Baptist Church
Senior Adult Sunday and our associational Senior Adult Revival will quickly be upon us. Sometimes it seems this Sunday and the events of the week are lost in the hectic schedule of events surrounding the end of school, graduations, and preparations for Mother’s Day. We want to affirm and encourage our senior adults to greater Christian maturity and ministry. Our church is blessed to have so many who have served the Lord faithfully for many years! I lead a men’s Bible study on Thursday mornings that has been a reliable source of blessing for me over the past several years. A few weeks ago, we were studying Titus 2.this study, we read: Older men are to be level headed, worthy of respect, sensible, and sound in faith, love, and endurance (Titus 2:2). As we spoke about the high standard Paul set for the older men under Titus’ authority in Crete, we discussed the need for older men to set an example for holiness and sound doctrine in the church. One of the men in the group who has only recently been saved asked, “If this is true and we are to set an example and teach the younger men, why are all of our Sunday school classes specific to a certain age span?” What a great question! When we look at the Titus 2:2 passage referenced above, the implication is clear. The older men and women are to be serious about setting an example and teaching others that they might grow in Christian maturity. For this to occur we need to remove a few barri-
ers. I would like to identify a few and make Sunday school class once a month simply to some suggestions for removing them. encourage and be encouraged by them? Older Comfort: We might as well admit it; we like to woman, why not begin to pray and look for a be comfortable. We like to sit in the same young lady who is bringing her family to place each Sunday, surround ourselves with church alone. Commit yourself to sit near her the same people, and for things to generally and look for ways to connect. Ask her for her go according to plan. We do not generally like children’s names, pray for them daily, and for things to change or to upset our estab- acknowledge their birthdays with a card. You lished routine.is one of the main barriers to would be amazed at how the Lord would bless developing cross generational relationships in this selfless ministry. the church. We want to sit with the people like us, and we want to engage in conversations that are comfortable. This is not the way of Christ, nor should it be the goal of our church experience. We are to be the servant of all. Our fellowship times on Sunday and Wednesday evenings ought to be a celebration of discomfort for some of us! We should seek out those we do not know and sit with them, seeking to engage and cultivate meaningful relationships. We ought to do it for the glory of Christ! Fear: How many times have you seen a young mother struggling with her children at church? You wanted to help and encourage her, but something held you back. Maybe you have observed someone younger in the faith truly seeking the Lord? You wanted to encourage them to press forward and to compliment them on their progress, but you remained silent? Why? We have irrational fear that somehow these things will be misconstrued or wrongly received. Our fear of rejection overwhelms us and we neglect the ministry of encouragement. Older Christian, why not attend a younger
Spiritual Immaturity: We could dress it many ways, but this is the real problem. Everyone should look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others, Philippians 2:4. If I am unwilling to be made uncomfortable for the sake of Christ and His church or I let fear hinder my willingness to encourage and engage, I am being selfish and disobedient. We do not wait for our children to come to us for instruction. We show our maturity and love by instructing and disciplining them for their own good. The young adult sitting two pews in front of you with their family may not know they need your love, encouragement, and example. Don’t let that stop you. Be obedient to the Word of God and reach out for the sake of Christ and for the building up of His Body, the Church.
A Note to Senior Adults: Senior Adult Sunday – Sunday, May 7th here at First Baptist Church. 2 Corinthians 4:18, “So we do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen; for what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” Too often we as human beings focus on what is seen, rather than the unseen. We are more concerned with what people think, (the seen) rather than what God thinks (the unseen). Our attention is drawn to material possessions, (the seen) rather than the gloriousness of God (the unseen). Things of this world (the seen) are temporary, but things of God (the unseen) are eternal. If we are truly followers of Jesus, we ought to follow the unseen rather than what is seen. As summer approaches and brings with it all the craziness and stress, let us not get bogged down with what is seen, but rather let us, as followers of Jesus, focus on the unseen.

SANCTUARY FUNDING COMMITTEE A few months ago the church voted to accept the Long-Range Planning Committee’s recommendation to begin moving toward the construction of a new sanctuary. Part of that recommendation was to create a fund-raising committee that is charged with raising money for that construction and doing so without incurring any debt, if possible. That committee has now been formed and is working toward a fast start on this project. So far, the committee has held a couple of very productive meetings. Our first task was to define our goals, and any obstacles that would impede our progress. Some may think that our goal would deal with dollars and cents, but our only agreement in that regard was that the number is very large…even intimidating. So our first goal is this: Place our faith in God’s provision, for He alone is able to know and accomplish His purposes. “But Jesus looked at them and said to them, ‘With men

HONDURAS UPDATE God is so good! In 2010 when Margie and I started taking teams to Honduras we hoped then that one day we would have a church in our villages. Thanks to God's provision and the faithful support of folks like you, this is now a reality. In the village of Buena Vista, Pastor David and his family now have a house to live in with a living room large enough for about 35 people. The house church's name is Iglesia Bautista Palabra de Vida, Word of Truth Baptist Church.
Our food pantry has been open almost a year now, and
This year our mission team’s focus is to build the body of Christ in the village of Buena Vista. Please be in prayer for us as we do Vacation Bible School, some construction projects, and teach the true doctrines of our faith. We would like to see the disciples there making disciples for Christ. Our team dates are June 26th-July 2nd, 2017. God Bless,
Bro. Dale
GUEST MUSICIAN -JEFF BATES - MAY 21ST AT 6 P.M.
Bates’ current secular project titled “Me and Conway” includes six original tunes and six Conway Twitty classics, one of which is a duet with the legendary Mrs. Loretta Lynn. “My fans have requested for years for me to record some Conway Twitty songs. Me and Conway is the answer to that request ,” Bates says. However, his life and career have not always been on
such a positive path. Bates took a dark detour from life in the late 90s where drugs and alcohol overtook his world and landed him in jail. The day Bates woke up from behind the cold, metal bars, he knew that only one person could help him turn things around. “A lot of times you get trapped in a situation like that and you want to make a deal with God – get me out of here and I’ll be a better person,” Bates says. “I didn’t want that and I didn’t ask for that deal. I simply said I don’t want to be this person anymore … please help me be a better person. That was all I was after, no matter how long I had to stay in jail to do it.” Some are not nearly as fortunate as Bates when they find themselves in that kind of
situation, but he is one of the few who stayed strong in his choice to change. Just two years after being released from jail, Bates inked his first record deal with RCA Records and released his debut album, Rainbow Man. Three more albums would follow for Bates, including Leave the Light On (also on RCA), and his self-titled project and One Day Closer, both on Black River Entertainment. While continuing to work on his own musical projects, his book, working with other artists, and being a full-time daddy, Bates also maintains a busy touring schedule each year, as well as speaking engagements to share his story with those to help prevent them making the wrong decisions in life as he did
some 20-years ago. “I share it all through song and story,” says Bates, who won the ICM Faith, Family & Country Awards title for Mainstream Country Artist in 2011. “I share the trials and tribulations to drug addiction, going to jail, finding Jesus in jail, and what He’s done in my life the past 15 years. I’ve been clean and sober now for 16 years.” Not a single day goes by for Bates that he doesn’t count his life’s blessings. Bates is humbled by the fact that he is an inspiration to others and is honored to give back in any way he can, especially through music.

Principle 2 Earnestly believe that God exists, that I matter to Him, and that He has the power to help me recover. “Happy are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Romans 5:4 Step 2 We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. “For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” Philippians 2:13 Wow!! Two great years of ministry are behind us and lives are being changed because of Jesus. Praise the Lord for His provisions and constant work in CR! COVENANT MINISTRIES First, I want to start by saying how grateful I am to FBC for the prayer, support, and encouragement you have given to Covenant Ministries. Just six months ago eight people started coming together and praying for this ministry. We had only a desire that God had laid on our hearts and wanted to see how God was going to work all pf this out. We have come a long way in a short time because of God’s grace. The construction phase will begin as soon as we get an approved set of plans back from the Fire Marshal. We are currently doing remodeling work such as dry wall, flooring, painting, etc.… The work that is being done would not be possible if
not for the efforts of some great volunteers. If anyone is interested in joining in and helping make this ministry a success please contact me. We will have an ongoing need as this transition home gets up and running. We at Covenant Ministries are very excited to see God at work already in this ministry and look forward to seeing men’s lives restored through the work of Christ. Once again, thank you so much for the support you have given as brothers and sisters in Christ. God bless! In Christ Alone, Bro Mike Drury

Sunday, May 21st @ 7 p.m.: MANDATORY Parent Meeting in the A. W. Robbins Room for all children that are attending either Tall Timbers camp or CentriKid. A notary will be on hand for CentriKid forms (signer must be present). This meeting is VERY IMPORTANT, especially if you have a first-time camper!
Please do not leave your child unattended. This is also when their Missions Offerings will be collected. All pickups will be in the Family Life Center (gym) beginning at 12 noon. Because of a large number of children in this area, once you have collected your child from their class group, please keep them with you. It is a high traffic area, and we do not want any children running around. Unattended children will be returned to their class group. Team Colors: We will be doing team colors again this year & children will have the opportunity to earn tickets for an endless amount of things (including wearing your team color)! Team colors go by the grade your child just completed (not the grade they will be going into). All of our PK3, PK4, and Kindergarteners will be wearing YELLOW; 1st and 2nd Graders will be wearing GREEN; 3rd and 4th Graders will be wearing BLUE; and, 5th and 6th Graders will be wearing RED. Our Youth helpers will be on Team ORANGE, and all of the adult leaders will be Team PURPLE!
Mission Projects: Everyone that is attending VBS, including Youth and adults, will be participating in two mission projects. The first way you can participate in a mission project (and kids will earn tickets for participating) is to donate money to help cover the cost of shipping for Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes. Each dollar brought is worth 1 ticket for kids and 1 point for your team...don't forget, this year adults and youth have their own teams! The second mission project will benefit our Washington Parish Food Bank. We will be collecting packages of dried beans and boxes of macaroni and cheese. Each item is worth 1 ticket for kids and one Sunday, June 4th @ 5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.: point for your team. Mission projects winVBS Kick-off!
