Prayer is This is faith at its simplest. We believe the one of the most talked about yet most neglected of the Christian disciplines. If Word of the Lord. God has made many precious and glorious promises. Faith is we were to take a poll of our church seen when we believe those promises members, hardly any would state they and act upon them or allow them to shape pray enough. Even those amongst us our lives. We are saved when we believe that we consider to be prayer warriors would admit they still have room to grow on the promise of salvation through the atonement of our Savior, Jesus Christ. in this area. Corporate prayer is one of Genuine saving faith is observed through the easiest practices to neglect in our the repenting of sin and calling upon worship gatherings. It would be Jesus as Lord. We see faith working in effortless to go through a service with salvation, but do we observe it in the way only a few prayers voiced by selected individuals at preselected moments, and we pray? most of us would go home without Jesus stated in Matthew 21:21-22 that if noticing what we had missed. Why is His disciples had faith and did not doubt, this? We come to worship longing for a they would receive whatever they asked “word” from the Lord. We want a in prayer. This is not a “name it claim it” “feeling” that comes from being in His type of praying Jesus is talking about. presence, but do we long for personal We do not manipulate the Lord, yet the transformation and to see the Kingdom obedient disciple’s prayer of faith is of God and His Christ advance? If we powerful and effective. This begs two do, then faith-filled, Spirit led, Bible questions: are we obedient disciples and informed prayer is what we need! are we praying in faith? The remedy for the first part of that question is simple, We have a faith problem. I see this in my life, and in the larger life of the Body repent and move forward in obedience, but the remedy for faithless prayer may of Christ. Hebrews 11:6 is a passage I seem more elusive. According to the memorized many years ago, “Now words of the Apostle Paul in Romans without faith it is impossible to please 10:17 it is not. There He said, “So faith God, since the one who draws near to comes from what is heard, and what is Him must believe that He exists and heard comes through the message about that He rewards those who seek Christ.” While Paul is speaking in the Him,” (CSB). Hebrews 11 defines faith context of saving faith, Jesus seemed to and records what we call the Hall of Faith. We read account after account of mirror this idea in John 15:7, “If you remain in Me and My words remain in

Got Faith?

you, ask whatever you want, and it will be done for you.” The prayer of faith is a prayer based on the promise of God, and the person of prayer prays powerfully when they have been renewed in the Word of God! You may say, “Brother Paul, my prayers go unanswered and they seem to get nowhere.” According to the Word of God, I would ask, “are you filled with faith and abiding in Christ?” If we are abiding in Christ, we are seeking to see Him exalted in all we do, and we are consciously pursuing His glory and obeying His instructions. We are filled with faith as we meditate on His revealed promises. The members of the Hall of Faith in Hebrews 11 look like spiritual giants to us, but they were sinful men and women. We were all sinful men and women before the Lord saved us. They were men and women who received promises from God and were willing to believe and put faith in the God who made those promises. I took the time to skim through Matthew pulling out the promises of Christ. I found 27 in chapters 6-28. As I read and meditated on those my faith was renewed. I was strengthened in prayer. I challenge you to take any New Testament book and do the same. What if we all prayed the promises of God for the glory of God? I believe the Lord would hear and send a great revival! I am looking forward to the Sunday evening prayer times we have left. I am praying this is just a taste of the awakening the Lord is planning to send in the prayer life of First Baptist Church!

know Who will make a difference. Just think of all the people in whose lives Jesus can make a difference when we decide to commit our lives to make a difference. It is an honor to serve alongside all of you. Thanks for all you do for the Lord. SENIOR ADULT MINISTRIES

Rev. Joey Miller Associate Pastor fbc.joeymiller@gmail.com “When Jesus saw their faith…” -- Mark 2:6 When He saw their faith, He brought spiritual salvation and

physical healing to the paralytic.

Making a Difference I love the story in Mark 2 about the guys who made a difference in the life of a paralyzed man. Jesus was in town, and the crowd had gathered at a house to be with Him. However, at least one man could not make it into the house where Jesus was. Hindered by paralysis, he would miss out on Jesus and the miracle that would change his life forever. However, along come some guys who seemed to have gotten the message that Jesus was teaching. They thought not of themselves, but of others. They left their comfort zone so they could bring the man to Jesus. They brought him because they knew Jesus could make a difference in his life. They came by faith not knowing how the task would be accomplished, but that God had called them to make a difference by doing what they could and trusting God for the results. Around First Baptist Church, you see many people like that-people who give of themselves to make a difference in others. They are people who leave their comfort zone to serve others. People who know the power of uniting together to accomplish a task that none of us could accomplish alone. They step out in faith because they may not know how, but they

In a relay race, there is always a person who runs the anchor leg of the race. This runner or swimmer is the most dependable athlete to make up the difference needed to win the race. We thank God for our Senior Adults who anchor for us in the ministry of the Lord. All of us stand on the shoulders of their faith and faithfulness. Their theme song seems to be, “May Those Who Come Behind Us Find Us Faithful.” It is my privilege to work with these Anchor Adults in our Senior Adult Ministries. They are a busy group on a mission for the Lord. This ministry is entering a new season led by our Senior Adult Committee and volunteers. They will have some ideas and plans to bring to our September Senior Adult Luncheon. We plan to hold regular monthly luncheons where we enjoy fellowship, encouragement, and where we do some planning for the ministry. At these luncheons, our committee will bring ideas and plans for days out as well as potential trips and ministry opportunities. It will also be a great way to catch up on what’s going on and how we can pray for one another HOMEBOUND MINISTRY We have some wonderful people in our fellowship that cannot come to church. Hindered by health or aging issues, they probably won’t be in church physically this Sunday – or next. However, they are very much a part of our church. They pray for it, give to it, and they keep up with it through the newsletter and friends. One of them reported recently that they are planning to give to the Sanctuary Fund monthly from their Social Security check. Yes, they are very much a part of the church. So how do we bridge the gap when they cannot come? We have a group of people who make a difference by “taking the church to them.” These volunteers are a part of our Homebound Team who visit the homebound praying for them and encouraging them. They will soon also open God’s Word and do a Sunday School Bible Study with them. If you would like to make a difference in their lives, there’s still room for more volunteers who will visit once a month and make a big difference. May He see our faith in action.

We are privileged to host the OneWay Quartet in concert on Sat., September 30th. They come to us highly recommended by churches where they have ministered and by my friend, Toby Hughes, Minister of Music at New Zion Baptist Church in Covington, where they will be leading in worship on the 1st. Consider the following quotes: “…We truly had a worship experience. Instantly, you could tell these men had a spirit of humility and led our congregation to see Jesus and not themselves.” …Junior Davis, Pastor, Williamsville Baptist Church, Kosciusko, MS “...As a pastor for over 25 years, I have had a standing rule to never release our entire Sunday morning worship time to an outside group. However, there are exceptions to every rule. OneWay Quartet is that exception! Their blend of Southern Gospel music and testimonials were inspired and uplifting. The Holy

Spirit used this group of dedicated, talented, believers to lead our congregation from heights of praise to an awe of worship. Many of our people commented that this time was one of the most worshipful events in recent history at our church. I heartily recommend to any church OneWay Quartet.”…Chester Carlisle, Pastor, Grace Baptist Church, Philadelphia, MS “...I was assured by them that God’s Word would be spoken along with great worship in song. So I gave them the entire service. The results of this service will speak for themselves. The power of God fell upon His people, and we had a time of decision that I cannot tell you how many individuals made decisions for God. God used these men on this day to speak to the hearts and lives of His people. I can tell you that ONEWAY honored what they told to me. I want you to know that they are ministry driven (Jesus first), very attentive to the Holy Spirit and obedient to God’s movement. I recommend them to your church and its needs. You and your congregation will be blessed.”

My prayer is that they soak in the truth found in God’s Word, that they will hide it in their hearts, that they will learn to use it as a tool to learn more about God, and that it would comfort them for all the days of their lives.

WASHINGTON PARISH FOOD BANK UPDATE Last month, I began explaining the Washington Parish Food Bank and its unique format as a Choice Pantry. Studies have shown that food that is chosen by a person is more likely to be eaten than food that is just handed out in a previously prepared box. Once a month we receive a preordered food shipment from Second Harvest in New Orleans. Our order is limited to only what is available at Second Harvest at the time the order is placed. The most of any one item that can be ordered is 30 cases which can range from as little as six items per case to 24 items per case. This equates to enough of one item for between 180 to 240 families depending on the amount of the item the family can choose. A few items, such as rice, come in larger quantities but may not be available but every three to four months. We also pick up from Winn Dixie here in Franklinton

and Walmart in Bogalusa two to three times a week, and this is where we receive most of the produce, bakery, and smaller amounts of other assorted food items.

needed most at that particular time. Some food items that we can use are never available from Second Harvest and never come from stores in sufficient amounts to meet the need.

We have almost 500 families coming to shop for food each month, and we also meet emergency food needs of those who come in because they are hungry or have been referred by churches or other agencies, such as the Red Cross. If it were not for food donations by individuals, clubs, schools, churches, or other organizations, we would never be able to meet the immense need that exists in our parish.

The purpose of the Thrift Shop continues to be to help support the ministry of the Food Bank. The bargains are great and we have some quality items. Come check us out on Wednesdays and Fridays. Take the leap and meet a need. Do a food drive or call to volunteer. You will receive the greater blessing! Beverly Cooke

That is why food drives are so important. If your club, school, organization, or family is interested in doing a food drive for us, just call us at 985-322-2017, and I will be happy to offer suggestions of what items are

Do not grow weary in doing good. ~ 2 Thessalonians 3:13

Join us Tuesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. It is the beginning of a new season and with the start of a new school year. Summer is over now and I am anxious for fall to get here. The changing of seasons has always been a time to clean out closets! Things just seem to pile up over a busy summer. It is easy to get busy and shove things in a closet with the intention to take care of it later. The thought of dealing with the mess gets to be a little overwhelming, and it is just easier to forget about it. Sad to say, but the mess made is not going away until I deal with it. Recently, I decided to tackle that mess; however, upon opening the closet door I was overwhelmed and promptly decided to leave that job for another day. The truth of the closet fiasco was staring me in the face, and it was my responsibility. Sorting through the mess took quite a bit of time. I dealt with the things at the front of the closet easily, but the back of the closet was a different story. Several boxes had been there for years that I did not want to deal with. Boxes I called the “big, bad boxes.” I finally had the gumption to deal with them. As I

sorted through the boxes, I wondered, “Why have I been hanging on to this stuff for so long? It has not benefited me or anyone else!” It has been a thorn in my side, calling to me every time I opened the closet as I neglected to resolve it for so long. There is a bright side to the story as there was some good stuff in the boxes! Treasures thought to be lost forever. These are treasures to keep and share with others. These were the things to remember and be thankful for them. In Celebrate Recovery, Step 4 says “we made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves” “Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord” - Lamentations 3:40 (NIV) Just like I needed to clean and sort through my closet, I need to sort through the things in my heart I have neglected resolve. I need to fearlessly search my heart and see if my ways are pleasing to God. I need to fearlessly examine my actions, confess, and return to the Lord. Our heavenly Father is gracious and loving and will forgive and cleanse us when we return to Him. Sherry Sylvest

COVENANT MINISTRIES OF FRANKLINTON UPDATE Forging Ahead By Bro. Mike Drury

Construction on the Men’s Covenant House is making steady progress. God has moved many men and women in the church to help give their time and resources to keep the renovation of the old daycare going. The fire marshal approved the plans in June. Electric work is complete. The walls of the bathrooms are up. The new plumbing is being laid in. All the paint for inside and out has been donated. Two-thirds of the laminate floor needed to cover the building have been donated. The men of FBC Franklinton have worked diligently to move construction forward by offering their capable carpentry skills. Praise God for His church and His provision!

To support Covenant Ministries of Franklinton financially go to www.covenantministriesoffranklinton.org and click on the “Support Our Ministry” button or you can designate your offering to Covenant Ministries through the church. Thank you for your prayers and any other support God leads you in.

Moving forward, there are still needs to pray the Lord furnishes. The flooring that has already has been donated is laminate. If you have leftover laminate flooring, please consider donating it. Any color, any amount of laminate flooring is desired to finish the 1,200 square feet that are left. In September, the Youth will assemble to paint. Other specific needs you can pray for this ministry are: a sprinkler system, a glass top stove, central heat and AC, money for start-up, more churches to partner, and approval by the Louisiana Baptist Convention for the grant that has been applied for. Unless the Lord builds a house, its builders labor over it in vain; unless the Lord watches over a city, the watchman stays alert in vain.
