An Unshakeable Faith Hebrews 12:28-29 states, “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us hold on to grace. By it, we may serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.” I have been walking through Hebrews with a men’s group that meets at the Sugar Shack each week. Hebrews is a letter of encouragement to Christians who have suffered persecution in the past and seem to be facing imminent persecution in the future. One distinctive of the letter is the ethnicity of the readers. It does not take a Bible scholar to make the connection that they are ethnic Jews. They had grown up worshipping God through the Old Covenant. The covenant that was ratified at Sinai. The people were set apart by the law they were to follow, and were to worship through the sacrifices. His readers were being tempted to go back to the Old Covenant because belief in Jesus Christ had become dangerous. The author wrote this letter to remind them that there was nothing to go back to. The New Covenant perfectly fulfilled the old. What was old had become obsolete. Jesus was the Prophet who fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament, He was the sacrifice the blood of lambs foreshadowed, He was the great
Unfortunately, turning back is a possibility as long as we live in this world. The writer of Hebrews makes it clear to us, as do the Apostles John, Peter, Paul, and Jesus Himself that those who turn back are not truly part of the Kingdom of God. One of my favorite passages of scripture is found in Luke 9:62 “No one who puts His hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the Kingdom of God.” We know that God is the One who saves and perseveres us, yet there is continual calling to the believer to keep the faith, to run the race, to finish the course. In the Hebrews passage referenced above, the church is commanded to “hold on to grace.” If we are justified, sanctified, and will ultimately be glorified through the sovereign work of the Lord, why do WE have to hold on to anything? Is not God holding on to me? God does hold on to those who are truly His, but those who are truly His have saving faith. We are told in the Hebrews 11:6 that without faith it is impossible to please God. We know from Ephesians 2:8-9 that we are saved by grace through faith. Faith believes the promise of God and acts accordingly.
The promise of the Old Covenant was one of blessing, protection, provision, and fellowship with God if His commands were obeyed. The nation of Israel demonstrated faith in this promise when High Priest that made the Levitical one they served and obeyed God faithfully obsolete, and He was the Lord and King and with loyalty. God’s judgment came enthroned forever. In light of these truths, how could they turn back?
upon them when they rebelled and tested His patience. What about those who are partakers in the New Covenant? Our faith is not in a promise that is conditional, but one that is wholly dependent upon the righteousness of God found in Christ Jesus our Lord. We have a better covenant not based on the law, our ability to keep it, or our good works. The New Covenant is entered by faith in the GRACE of God seen in the atoning sacrifice of Christ. Real saving faith is seen and brings glory to God as we repent of our love for all that is “shakable” and pursue that which is unshakable. The call of Christ is to turn from the affections of the world and to follow Him. This means that Christ and His glory become our first, all-permeating affection. Everything in this world is “shakable.” It is all fading away. The persecutions, hurts, tribulations, and deprivations that may come our way are temporary in nature. We may suffer some things throughout our entire pilgrimage on this earth, but deliverance will come! We are receiving an unshakable kingdom! It is becoming evident in me as the rule and reign of Christ exert greater dominion in my life and character, it will be realized fully in my death and ultimately at the return of Christ. Hold on to grace!

Adult Fellowship Ministry
Rev. Joey Miller Associate Pastor of Pastoral Care fbc.joeymiller@gmail.com Not that I have already reached the goal or am already fully mature, but I make every effort to take hold of it because I also have been taken hold of by Christ Jesus. Brothers, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:12-14
It has been a great month for our Adults 55+ Ministries. Our senior adults are an active group in ministry. We had a great turnout for our September Fellowship Luncheon. These monthly fellowship luncheons are the anchor of our ministry when we get together in fellowship and talk about our ministries for the Lord. Please put these first Friday luncheons on your calendar and invite others to join us. Ministry events, day trips, and other events will be planned as well as luncheon programs that will be a blessing. For our September luncheon, Robbie and Josette Stringfield prepared an excellent meal and members of the Senior Adult Committee helped to put together a fun time of fellowship. Tommy Thiebaud, Director of the Washington Parish Office of Homeland Security and Disaster Relief, gave an informative presentation on hurricane preparedness.
It was a blessing for our FBC staff and volunteers to host the September birthday party at Heritage Manor. Thanks to our great folks who ministered to these sweet people. We will be adding a monthly worship at Good Samaritan to our Senior Adult Ministry schedule. The date and time will be announced soon. We will now be leading worship at both our nursing homes each month. Volunteers are welcome to join either or both ministry times. OCTOBER LUNCHEON: The October luncheon will be held Friday, October 6th, at Sugar Shack. We will leave the church at 10:30 a.m. and travel by bus. Our program guests will be Kaye Ladner and Wayne Kuhn with the Washington Parish Fair. The luncheon meal will be $9.00.
By the time you read this, we will have begun rehearsals of our Christmas presentation: Come, Let Us Adore. We certainly have room for new choir members to join us as we prepare to celebrate our Savior’s birth.

Allow me just a quick word of appreciation to all our worship teams. Mrs. Jerry Dick still leads our Senior Singers and Bell Choir. We welcome back Mrs. Jerry after a brief illness and look forward to a Fall filled with singing and ringing. The Senior Choir and the hand bells will participate in the Piano Praise, which is returning in November. The date of this performance will be Sunday, November 26th. A big “thank you” to our Sanctuary Choir for your presentation of The Church Triumphant; we were all reminded of Jesus declaration, “…I will build my church and the gates of Hell will not prevail against it.” (Matt. 16:18).
One Voice has grown over the past couple of years with new singers and musicians. This worship leader is immensely grateful for all the work you guys do to lead in worship every week of the year. You have sacrificed in ways most will never be aware, and your dedication to using your gifts to honor our Lord helps all of us become engaged with His Presence as we worship each week. We need many of our church family to join us at the Fair on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Half Moon Bluff Church for some hymn singing. Everyone knows the routine, so sing with us. And by the way, you will want to stay to hear Guy Penrod on the Fair Stage afterward. Remember always that it is not about the music and it is not about us. It is all about Him. Indeed, “it is all about You, Jesus.” May it ever be so!
REACHing In and REACHing Out in Student Ministry
Rev. Cody Thomas Student Pastor fbc.codythomas@gmail.com
October is historically one of the unique months in the life of FBC Student Ministry for one reason … The Great Red Pumpkin Hunt! Many church youth groups have tried to duplicate such event, but none have succeeded because there is only ONE Great Red Pumpkin Hunt. I do not know how long the Great Red Pumpkin Hunt has been going on at FBC, but it is a tradition, a rite of passage, a trophy to be desired. In my tenure as Student Pastor, no student has won the Great Red Pumpkin Hunt more than once. However, some adults have won multiple times. In case you are unaware of the Great Red Pumpkin Hunt, let me give you a little insight. The Student Ministry breaks off into teams in vehicles, (I am looking for adult volunteers to drive, let me know if you are willing.)
and each team is given clues that take them on a journey around Franklinton. At the end of the clues, there is The Great Red Pumpkin. (It is a pumpkin that I spray paint red.) The first team to solve all of the clues and arrive at the pumpkin wins! The winning team gets their picture taken and is forever immortalized on the wall in the Student Ministry Room. Check out the wall to see past winners! While the Great Red Pumpkin Hunt is something we do, it is NOT who we are as a Student Ministry. Our identity is wrapped up in and shaped by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Pray for our Student Ministry. Pray for the students to follow Jesus, and make His glory known wherever they go. Pray for the Great Red Pumpkin Hunt as many students who do not come to church will be at our church that night.
Student Ministry Upcoming Events: •

•
5th Sunday Dinner Sunday, October 29th the Student Ministry would like to say “thank you for your support” by providing the church with dinner that evening.

May we be the church that reaches out to the lost and the hurting and points them to Jesus. Thank you for all you do as the church.
Not long ago, a tree came crashing down in the front of our yard during all of the rain we had been having. It was a tall tree and landed right across a section of our fence. The tree was not unhealthy. There wasn’t anything that would have made me think it was in danger of falling, but there it was, completely horizontal, roots upended. As we walked down to look at the damage, I wondered why a perfectly fine- looking tree would fall over. Then I walked down to the roots. There wasn’t much to them. It all looked great up top, but when the storms came there just wasn’t enough depth to keep it from crashing down (right across my fence!).

Several people have asked about our recent switch to Bible Drills. If I am completely honest, it is because I feel like a total failure watching kids, many of whom have grown up in this church, have to look up Exodus and Acts in the concordance of the Bible. I want them to look at the Bible as not just God’s Holy Word, but as a helpful tool when the storms of life come, as a valuable weapon when the enemy begins to attack. I want them to have deep roots— to know what the Bible says, how to find it, and how to stand, well rooted, in defense of their faith. For my part, when I have to watch these children grow and begin to experience storms, I want to watch them stand and know that I have done all I can to help them grow deep roots.

WASHINGTON PARISH FOOD BANK UPDATE
COVENANT MINISTRIES OF FRANKLINTON
Do not grow weary in doing good. ~ 2 Thessalonians 3:13 The Food Bank continues to be very busy with more than fifty new clients enrolling in the last month alone. There have also been more homeless or displaced individuals that have come in seeking assistance. These present a unique challenge since it is more difficult to find nutritional food options when they have limited if any, means of preparing the food. I look for food on our shelves in pop-top cans or boxes and then must limit that to food that can be eaten cold or heated over an open fire if they even have that as an option. We need to count our blessings every day for what God has provided us. We also should remember that many of the people we serve at the food bank are not there because of their laziness or lack of wanting to do better. They have found themselves in circumstances beyond their control, such as overwhelming medical expenses or grandchildren to feed.
Such situations remind us daily of why this is truly a ministry. Thank you for being a partner with us. Thanks also for the food we have been receiving from the Sunday night collections. It is all being used to serve those in need. We were also blessed by the American Heritage Girls who came to volunteer on their National Day of Service, September 16th. They cleaned so much of our building-floors, bathrooms, refrigerators, and shelves. It was amazing what they accomplished in a few short hours, and it was so appreciated. We still need people to volunteer to help in the Food Bank and the Thrift Shop, so I hope some of you will consider coming one day a week or even two a month. It is important to have those we can count on to be there on a regular basis. Please consider giving me a call for more details.
