A Monthly Newsletter of First Baptist Church
Christmas Reflection and Response Christmas and Easter are the two most significant holidays on our calendar. This is observed not only in the glorious events they commemorate, but also the way so many events in the church surround them and seek to help us regard their significance. The Christian life is to be a continual reflection on the person, nature, instructions, and activities of our Heavenly Father and His perfect expression, Jesus Christ. These reflections are not just academic. They are to illicit a response. They are to help us see how to please God and glorify Him by living according to His revealed ethic and purpose for us. Ultimately, our reflections on God help us please God and to make us more like Him as we follow and obey Him by faith over a lifetime. This month I would like to help you reflect on the Incarnation (God becoming a man) and how we should respond to this glorious truth. Reflect God gave the greatest gift. When my grandfather passed away, we found dress shirts he had been given many years ago, still in the plastic wrapping, stacked in his closet. Every year, he was given gifts he did not need. He set them aside thinking he might use them at some point, but he never did.
The Gift God gave of His precious Son, Jesus Christ was one humanity desperately needed then and still needs today! Often we think of the gifts the wise men brought to the Christ child, but these gifts were temporary, finite, and eventually exhausted by Jesus’ parents. The incarnation accomplished what we never could. The Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary and the child born to her was the Son of God. He was not conceived and born with a fallen sin nature as we are. No son of Adam could deliver Adam’s children. The Son of God, born of a woman, was the only one who could live without sin, fulfill the law, and therefore die a substitutionary atoning death for the sins of the world. God’s gift was planned. I love reading Matthew’s account of the nativity. It is shorter than Luke’s but it includes the genealogy of Jesus, and it is filled with prophetic quotes. As Matthew wrote to a primarily Hebrew audience, it was vital for him to demonstrate that Jesus was born into the right family. The readers needed to know that His ancestry and the circumstances of His birth fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament. Our God was able to look through time and speak through His prophets regarding this glorious gift He would give us. How? All of these things happened according to His foreknowledge and His predetermined
plan to reveal His grace, mercy, and love through this glorious gift who would be, God with us, Emanuel. God’s gift is available. Commercials and advertisements usually have a disclaimer: “supplies are limited” or “available for a limited time.” The Incarnate Son of God, Jesus, our Lord and Savior, is still saving those who come to Him in faith. The One who became God with us is, “always able to save those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them,” Hebrews 7:25, HCSB. He is available to everyone, everywhere, regardless of class or background. The angels told the shepherds in Luke 2:10, “I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” Thank God He made it available to all! Respond How will you reflect the glory of God seen in the Christmas message this Christmas season? Are you willing to share the GREATEST gift that has ever been given, Jesus Christ? Are you planning how you will give gifts that will glorify God and show His grace to others? Are you giving gifts that reflect the availability of God’s gift even to those that the world might see as undeserving or insignificant? After all, It was God’s plan to extend this greatest of all gifts to sinful Gentiles like you and me.

Good News
Rev. Joey Miller Associate Pastor of Pastoral Care fbc.joeymiller@gmail.com
Join us!
Have you ever been in the place where you really needed some good news? Maybe it was a critical financial need in your life or an appointment with the doctor that had you worried. You could fill in the blank with a hundred different scenarios. We have all been there. That is where the shepherds were. They were the lowliest of all classes of citizens. Unable to worship like everyone else, they found themselves on the backside of the hills of Judea watching the sheep. And, to top it off, they are on the graveyard shift in the wee hours of the night. Then it happened… “Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. However, the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: Today a Savior, who is Messiah the Lord, was born for you in the city of David.” – Luke 2:9-11
Good news! Everyone needs it. The shepherds needed it, and so do we. We live in a fallen world full of the results of sin’s decay. We are reminded daily of our human nature, the power of the flesh, and the struggles of life. So we love to hear good news, whether it is the birth of a newborn baby, the healing of someone’s disease, or the excitement of a job promotion. Good news blesses us with the opportunity to look beyond our situation to see hope and blessing. The shepherds heard the news of the Christ and were able to look beyond their hopelessness to the hope of seeing and celebrating the Christ.
So what do we do with good news? We do what the shepherds did… We receive it – they soaked in the herald of the angels. We celebrate it – they headed off to Bethlehem to join the worship scene. We share it – they went away telling everyone what they had seen and heard. You and I have heard the “good news of great joy.” Consequently, we are compelled to receive it as God’s message of love, celebrate it with every possible means at this Christmas season, and share it with others in need of good news. May your season of celebrating the coming of the Christ child be filled with peace and joy in knowing and sharing the love of Jesus. Note the Bridge calendar for the many ways to celebrate and share the good news during this blessed season. I pray that this month will find you and your family receiving good news in the worship of the Lord, celebrating good news in the ministry of caring for others, and in sharing the good news of Jesus with people who could really stand to hear some good news.
Happy Birthday
We return, once again this Christmas, to the scene of a humble manger where the great Light of the world was born. We join with the shepherds and angels—in awe of God’s Love come to earth. Amidst the noise and distractions of the season, we still our hearts as we bow before Him and worship the one true King.

“On Sunday evening, December 17th, our Sanctuary Choir will present a Christmas musical entitled Come Let Us Adore. It is filled with songs to draw the heart closer to the true hope and joy that is ours in Christ and is a blend of new seasonal anthems and traditional carols that will awaken different perspectives of the Christmas story. We hope you will join us that evening as we lift up choruses of worship and relive the miraculous story of Christ’s birth.” Also…do not miss our children’s presentation of What a Beautiful Name on Sunday evening, December 10th. Kelly and Emily have taken a musical written for youth and adapted it for children, and the kids are singing with their usual enthusiasm. You will exalt our Savior in worship, receive the personal blessing of worship, and encourage our children and leaders all at the same time! “For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. The dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from now on and forever. The zeal of the Lord of Armies will accomplish this.” Isaiah 9:6-7 (CSB)

The Gospel and Christmas Jesus. Although fully dead, Jesus fully man, and fully God defeated the grave and resurrected, concurring sin and death in a four-day period.
As the holiday season approaches, we all have the tendency to get wrapped up in the traditional American Christmas holiday festivities, and thus lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas … The Gospel. The Gospel is why we celebrate Christmas. The Gospel is why we sing Christmas songs. The Gospel is why we give. The Gospel is why we receive. The Gospel is why we live our lives for God’s glory. The Gospel! Over two thousand years ago, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into this dark, evil, sinful world to be a gift for humanity. God sent His Son into the world not to condemn the world, but in order to save the world. This world is full of sinners, people who go against God in their actions, their thoughts, and even their very nature. By nature, human beings are children of wrath, and as children of wrath, the people of this world are separated from a holy loving God and thus needs God to save them. God, seeing just how much humanity needed Him, sends His Son as a gift. Born of a virgin, Jesus fully man, and fully God, grew up just like a normal Jewish man except He never once sinned. Jesus never once sinned through His actions, He never once had a bad thought about anybody, and even His nature is perfect. In order to save humanity from the wrath they deserve, Jesus gave up Himself, His perfection, on a cross. God made Him, Jesus, who knew no sin to be sin for humanity’s sake so that humanity might have the righteousness of God in Christ
God’s grace is poured out on all who admit that they are a sinner, believe in Jesus as the one and only sacrifice for their sins, and confess Jesus as Lord. God’s grace does not end at the day of salvation. For the follower of Jesus, God’s grace is a daily experience. For the follower of Jesus, the depravity of their sinful state is made clear like never before because the follower of Jesus is called to live a life holy unto the Lord. For the follower of Jesus, the need for God’s grace is daily. Because God’s grace not only saves us on the day of our salvation but continues to save us as we seek Him and seek to be obedient to Him. Obedience is the key. For the follower of Jesus, obedience is a way of life, obedience to their Lord, their King, their God, their Everything, Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God. Christmas is the time Christians remember the birth of Christ; we remember that God saw our depravity and sent His Son to this Earth to die on our behalf. This remembrance should lead us to worship. Worship of the God that saw our depravity and did something about it. When we truly worship our God and King, our worship leads straight into obedience. Through obedience, we experience God’s grace in our lives. This Christmas, let us not merely remember the birth of Christ, let us worship Him and as we worship let us seek the Lord in obedience so that He who is faithful will do a mighty work in us, and through us because He is a gracious loving God and King. “Put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” – Ephesians 4:24
Merry Christmas! I hope this month brings you all the peace and joy that comes along with the celebration of Christ our Savior! Please take note of the following things going on in the life of our Preschool and Children’s Ministry…
The CentriKid Giving Tree will be up through the end of the year.

Wee Worship Four more volunteers are needed to complete the 2018 Wee Worship calendar. We currently have a need for two volunteers that will lead one Sunday in both the 8:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. services on the same day (dates are May 20th and May 27th) and two volunteers that will lead in the 10:45 a.m. service only for two consecutive Sundays (dates are Sept. 2nd & 9th and Sept. 16th & 23rd). If you can help, please let Kelly know. Also, if you would like to volunteer for a service time that is not listed, we have extra 8:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. spots available! CentriKid Giving Tree Through the end of the year, the CentriKid Giving Tree will be up by the FBC Kids bulletin board. Ornaments on the tree are in different giving amounts and help sponsor a child to go to camp. Please prayerfully consider how you can help send one of the forty-two children that will attend to camp in 2018. The total cost for a single camper is $318 ($250 after the $68 deposit) and several families have two or three children going. To help sponsor a child, simply choose an ornament that reflects the giving level you would like ($25-$250), take a specially printed envelope from the cart beside the tree, put the ornament and your donation inside the envelope, and place the envelope in the offering plate or drop it by the church office.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
SANCTUARY FUNDING COMMITTEE UPDATE Spiritual Growth through Sacrificial Giving
Operation Christmas Child boxes are packed for another year. We would like to thank all of the church members and others that helped with the operation this year. We had a total of 1175 (as of 11/14/17) boxes that First Baptist Church members packed. Thanks to the Sunday School classes that donated items for the boxes and the groups that packed boxes for their classes. Just think of the people that can be impacted by these boxes.
Once again, thank you for all you did for Operation Christmas Child this year and be praying for this mission throughout the year. Not all of the boxes will be delivered by Christmas, so it is important to keep this mission in your prayers.
I have enjoyed working with the Church and the Sunday School classes in getting the items ready for the packing party, but I think it is time someone younger took over this opportunity. Pray about We had a nice turnout at our this, and if you feel this is packing party, and we want something you would like to to thank all of you that helped do, please talk to Margie or get the boxes packed and put me, and we will get you the into the cartons. When we all information you need. It is a work together as a team, we wonderful mission, and I plan can really get things done. to continue to participate -just not in the capacity I have We asked that you all be in in the past. prayer for the shoeboxes as they make their way to the Merry Christmas and God children that will be Bless, recipients. We know that God will put the right box in Sandra the hands of the right child, so let's pray that the child and the parents will be open to the teaching and they will come to know Christ.
Our Pledge Campaign is well underway. Over 80 families committed to a specific monthly (or, in a few cases, annual) contribution to the New Sanctuary Fund. Are you in that number? If not, it is not too late. We will continue receiving pledge cards throughout the duration of this Campaign. Pledge cards and boxes will continue to be located in the church foyer, at the Praying Hands table, and in the church office. Our pledges and the contributions that have followed the pledge campaign are providing a foundation on which other campaigns can be built.
The idea is to have several of our small groups—Sunday School classes, Bible Study groups, Brotherhood, youth, children’s departments, and so forth—sponsor and host at least one special event each year. It is well within reason that we could have one or two special events each month.
It was mentioned in previous articles that the funding committee has several different campaigns that will be developed during this fundraising effort. In both the September and November editions of “The Bridge” we announced the next campaign. This is a “Special Events” campaign that will allow our members to get involved in raising funds for the new sanctuary.
In the coming weeks, the Funding Committee will be contacting several small groups to discuss special events possibilities and to begin to develop a Special Events calendar for 2018 and beyond. Please consider what your group can do to help transform the vision of a new sanctuary into a reality.
We have an opportunity for a special event at the end of December. One of our members has graciously offered to match new sanctuary contributions (up to $15,000) for one Sunday only. We are designating December 31st as “Match Sunday.” We encourage all members to give an extra amount on that date to achieve a total contribution of at least $30,000.
SANCTUARY FUNDING COMMITTEE UPDATE & SANCTUARY DESIGN COMMITTEE REPORT If you were unable to be with us on Pledge Sunday or if you have not yet turned your Pledge Card in, please know that it is not too late. You may return your Pledge Card in the offering plate or to the church office. Pledge boxes are located in the foyer of the Sanctuary and on the Praying Hands table. Please continue to consider prayerfully how God would have you give.

WASHINGTON PARISH FOOD BANK UPDATE
COVENANT MINISTRIES OF FRANKLINTON
Do not grow weary in doing good. ~ 2 Thessalonians 3:13 The food bank continues to be very busy with ten or more new people signing up each week. The food we were able to order this month from Second Harvest remains much less than usual, so it is much harder to keep up with the need for our families. It is difficult for me to have to reduce the number of choices our families can have in each food category, but unfortunately, that is what has had to be done in several areas so that everyone can have something.
and to those who responded and came to the food bank with your gifts of food. Most of the food items are now on the shelves ready for our families to be able to choose next week. Your donations have truly been a blessing.
As the holiday season begins, please remember to pray for our families, many of whom will not be able to have the kind of celebration that most of us will. Also, pray for the wonderful group of volunteers we now have. They work very hard At the same time, it has been each week and give so much awesome to see God’s hand at of themselves to make the work. People in this church lives of our families a little bit and elsewhere have stepped better. Many of our families tell up when they learned of less us each month what a blessing food on the shelves and in our the food bank and its warehouse. A lady we did not volunteers are to them. In the book of James the first verse of the second chapter says this “My brothers, do not show favoritism as you hold on to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ.” James then gives an example of favoritism in an illustration of how the rich are treated verses the poor. Then in verses eight and nine he gives a contrast of what is right and wrong but also gives the result for doing each. Verse eight reads “Indeed, if you keep the royal law prescribed in Scripture, love your neighbor as yourself, you are doing well.” What James is saying to his reader is if you strive to live by God’s word you will do well against sin. In contrast to that in verse nine he writes “But if you show favoritism, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.” I am so grateful to God for this local body of Christ at FBC Franklinton and the desire to live in accordance with His word. The desire of this church to reach the lost and minister to all walks of life is very encouraging to your fellow brother in Christ. I want to say thank you for all the support that has been given to Covenant
Ministries thus far. We just received a grant from the Louisiana Baptist Convention that will cover the rest of the construction cost to finish the building. As we complete the construction in the next couple of months the reality of being able to house men for the glory of God is in view. This would not be possible without the support and sponsorship of you the church! Thank you once again for the love you have for Jesus and your neighbor. God bless!
