A Monthly Newsletter of First Baptist Church
Becoming an interim pastor in a vibrant church is like boarding a fast-moving train. It is exciting but needs to be done carefully! While this is the start of a new journey for me, you are moving ahead rapidly. Your invitation to “jump on board” humbles and excites me. I am confident that being part of you for a while will bless and strengthen my life. Much grace has already been shown to me! Charles Spurgeon, the great English preacher, declared he would “not step down from being a pastor to be a king.” While I will serve only as your Interim Pastor, Spurgeon’s words vibrate inside me as I come to be with you. All those privileged and charged with spiritual oversight of some part of the people of God must, in the words of scripture, “walk circumspectly.” (Ephesians 5:15) Thus, I am called to be with you in humility, with a quiet heart, responsive to the voice of the Spirit in all things, and always ready to receive you and encourage your faith in Jesus.
You, as a church, enter this interim period – the time between one beloved and Godly pastor until the arrival of the next beloved and Godly pastor - well-prepared for the journey. Jesus has blessed you with strong, committed ministers, staff, and lay leaders. He has, because of your faithfulness, added many to your fellowship in recent years.
One of my primary and most delightful tasks will be to walk around among you and applaud all the wonderful things I see God doing in your lives and through you in the community. I don’t look much like it, but I love to be a cheerleader in the kingdom! Beginning the first Sunday in August in morning and evening worship we will look at how Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount describes the kind of church He blesses and that will hear His encouragement to grow personally and as a church in keeping with His words.
The fellowship of the church My wife Janice and I live in overflows with joy and Bogalusa, have two daughters grace. (one in Eunice, LA and one with the Lord), and four fabulous You are committed to grandchildren. I have pastored prayer and the Word. Baptist churches for more than fifty years. We are excited to meet you You experience these blessings because God has poured Himself and hear about your lives (even though it may take a while to out toward you. Certainly, He remember your names). desires to continue doing great things in and through you. He has Grace to you! no desire for His presence, His strength, nor His blessing to be less in coming months than it has been in the last few years. Following Him, you will experience even more of His power to save, restore, and bless. I believe this will happen, and I am humbled by the invitation to be part of this incredible time.

Student Ministry Update
REACHing In and REACHing Out in Student Ministry
Rev. Cody Thomas Student Pastor fbc.codythomas@gmail.com
Upcoming Student Ministry Events: Paintball Thursday, August 2nd leaving from FBC at 8:00 a.m. •
New 7th graders, as well as “old” 12 graders, are invited •
Pancake Promotion Sunday Sunday, August 5th at 9:30 am th 7 grade – 12th grade
The month of August is always bittersweet; on the one hand, it’s the end of summer, and on the other hand, it’s the beginning of school. If any students are reading this, they may be thinking, “Bro. Cody, there is nothing sweet about the end of summer, only bitterness.” August is bittersweet for me because it’s the end of summer (bitter), BUT it’s also the beginning of the school year (sweet). The beginning of the new school year is sweet because of all the new 7th graders moving up into the Student Ministry! For all those moving up into the Student Ministry (New 7th Graders), we have an annual Pancake Promotion Sunday. This year’s Pancake Promotion Sunday will be Sunday, August 5th during Sunday morning Bible Study, 9:30 a.m. in the upstairs Student Ministry Building.
The Student Ministry will also be going to play PAINTBALL during the month of August. Thursday, August 2nd we are leaving FBC Franklinton at 8:00 a.m. and going to Paintball Command in Mandeville and playing PAINTBALL. All new upcoming 7th graders are invited to play PAINTBALL as well as those who just graduated. Of course, all parents are encouraged to attend. The price for PAINTBALL is $35 per person this includes all rentals and lunch. Come play some PAINTBALL; It will be epic.
Pastor Search Committee Update
PASTOR SEARCH COMMITTEE WILL BE SEEKING NOMINATIONS In the next several weeks you will be asked to nominate persons to serve on the Pastor Search Committee. The established procedure calls for the committee to consist of nine persons - five nominated by the church and four deacons chosen by the Deacon Board. To make the Committee more representative of the entire church, you are encouraged to remember the need for people from the various age groups and church ministries. The work of the Pastor Search Committee will impact God’s work in and through this church for many years. With this in mind, please remember the purpose of the Pastor Search Committee is not to “hire a pastor.” The pastor is to be called by God to this work, with that calling expressed through the work of the Pastor Search Committee, church, and his own prayers. The true head of the Pastor Search Committee is not the person serving as chair but Jesus Himself as Head of the church. The heart of their work will be listening for God’s direction and obeying Him. Because this is, above all, a spiritual work, you are encouraged to nominate people who 1) are effective in prayer 2) walk humbly before the Lord 3) carry no pre-set personal agendas 4) can absolutely keep confidences 5) have the trust of the congregation 6) will make a priority to commitment to this work. Thank you for being part of this process. Please pray for the deacons as they administer this process and pray for those who will be asked to serve.

Upcoming Events
NURSING HOME MINISTRY Thursday, August 9th at 3:00 p.m. Worship at Good Samaritan
Monday, August 20th at 3:00 p.m. Worship at Heritage Manor
When He (Jesus) saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” – Matthew 9:36-38
Sunday School class discussing who may be missing and what we need to do about it. Together we can heed the words of Jesus as we love and minister to OTHERS. If you know someone who needs ministry or outreach contact outside the bounds of your Sunday School class, please call the church office.
Salvation Army founder William Booth, in his later years, was asked to speak at a church conference. When he responded that he could not, they asked if he could send a message to the conference. On the day of the conference, with anticipation high as to the possibility of messages from Booth, a young man came running in with a note. Booth had sent a one-word message – “OTHERS.”
We appreciate the concerted effort our deacons are making to come alongside our staff in making hospital ministry and other ministry visits. Together as staff, deacons, and Sunday School classes, we will show the love of Christ to our members and to our community.
Sometimes in the flow of church life, we lose track of others who may be “missing in action.” These are fellow believers who have been an active part of the fellowship. Before we know it, it has been a few Sundays since we have seen them. During this time in the life of our church, it will be important that we follow the example of our Lord and be intentional about others. This intentionality involves paying attention to others as our Savior did. It also includes feelings of love and compassion for others, expressing concern for them. Finally comes the command of Jesus that we pray for them and ask the Lord to bring someone into their lives can encourage them in the Lord. That someone may be us, so we need to be attentive to the leadership of the Holy Spirit each day asking God to point us in the direction of someone for whom He is concerned. Our deacons and Sunday School classes will hopefully be intentional to work together so that no one “falls through the cracks” of our church fellowship. Spend some time in each meeting or

“It was the best of times; it was the worst of times…” You recognize those words as being the beginning of the introductory paragraph in the famous novel entitled The Tale of Two Cities. To say this moment in time for First Baptist Church, Franklinton is “the worst of times” is a gigantic overstatement of the emotion associated with the departure of our pastor and his family. It is, however, simply to say that we have grown to love and appreciate Pastor Paul, Christina, Titus, Lydia, and Lucas and that we will miss them and also miss the spiritual leadership that was ours through Bro. Paul’s ministry here. We have been (and continue to be!) a very blessed congregation. Nevertheless, there is that certain sense of loss along with a profound “where-do-we-go-from-here.” While we will continue to know Bro. Paul and his family as our friends, our brothers and sisters in Christ, our fellow witnesses to the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ and certainly will pray for them and their new church family, we still have a calling right here in our assigned part of the world; and we are already in the journey of moving forward for God’s glory. You understand, of course, my use of the word “worst”; but, you may ask, how
in the world could this also be “the best of times” for our church? Well, I’ve always been a rather pragmatic kind of individual, finding it fairly easy to close one chapter and move on to the next. Here’s what I see (or I think I see)…I’m no prophet! The unity we have known as a church will intensify and grow stronger as we navigate all the circumstances associated with the search for a new pastor. That new pastor will be an amazing man of God with a certain calling to this place and a Spirit-led vision for the future of FBC. In the meantime, we will continue to worship with desire for God’s glory to be manifested among us and in our community. We will be patient with the process and with each other as we adjust to our new normal, whatever that may eventually look like. We will pray diligently for and with each other. We will rejoice in the arrival of our interim pastor, a godly man of wisdom and discernment. Welcome aboard, Bro. Bob! We’ll be grateful for the many capable leaders among us, men and women who will faithfully continue to fulfill their commitments to their Lord and all of us. I could go on, but space does not permit. Suffice to say that the next chapter in the life of our church, building on the preceding, can be an exciting time of anticipation about what God will do with us and through us in the months and years ahead until Jesus comes. As the song based on the Scripture admonishes: We press on! ATTENTION: SENIOR SINGERS Our weekly get-togethers for fellowship and praising the Lord through singing will resume on Monday, August 20th (8:30 a.m. in the choir room). This is a great time to encourage other senior adults to join the senior adult choir. Any adult who enjoys singing and is free on Monday mornings will be welcomed. Make it your mission in your Sunday School classes, especially, to invite others to become a part of this ministry. Also, pray for Mrs. Jerry as she prepares music for us to sing, for her health and ours, too, and for those who might decide to join us. ATTENTION: BELL CHOIR This rowdy bunch (just kidding!) will resume rehearsals on Wednesday, August 22nd. We assume that all of our current ringers will continue, so put the date on your calendar; and, of course, be on the look-out for anyone who might potentially become a part of this unique ministry. Mrs. Jerry is eager to get us back to making music for the glory of God. “To God be the glory, great things He has done.” And let us be assured that He wants to do much more in and through each one of us, the family of God, assembled at the corner of Self and Cleveland, and sent to the world. “Praise the Lord!”
SANCTUARY FUNDING COMMITTEE UPDATE & SANCTUARY DESIGN COMMITTEE REPORT If you were unable to be with us on Pledge Sunday or if you have not yet turned your Pledge Card in, please know that it is not too late. You may return your Pledge Card in the offering plate or to the church office. Pledge boxes are located in the foyer of the Sanctuary and on the Praying Hands table. Please continue to consider prayerfully how God would have you give.

In the midst of this hot summer, we have experienced some tremendously powerful storms. Recently, one of these storms blew up very suddenly. Because I’m not one to watch the news very often, I had no idea there was a chance of rain, and I ran outside just in time to see a huge flash of lightning. Before I could scarcely process what happened, and how incredibly unsafe that had just been, the lightning was gone. As quickly as it had come, it was gone. And that’s just how I feel about this summer!

Sunday School continues to be important and relevant in the discipleship of children. Children are given the opportunity to improve their Bible knowledge, a powerful tool in knowing and defending their faith. Women in God’s Service
Suffering is real. But so is hope. Kristen and Sarah have walked through, and are walking in, difficult times. So these thirty biblical reflections are full of realism about the hurts of life yet overwhelmingly full of hope about the God who gives life.

This beautiful, cloth-bound book will gently encourage and greatly help any woman who is struggling with suffering whether physical, emotional or psychological, and whether for a season or for longer. For anyone who is hurting, this book will give hope, not just for life beyond the suffering, but for life in the suffering.
With a foreword by Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life, this life-changing book helps you find true happiness? If you choose to accept it. LIFE HAPPENS. Happiness and Healing are yours for the choosing. We’ve all been hurt by other people, we’ve hurt ourselves, and we’ve hurt others. And as a result, every single one of us ends up with some sort of hurt, hang-up, or habit. But the question we all face is, Where do we go from here? Life’s Healing Choices offers freedom from our hurts, hang-ups, and habits through eight healing choices that promise true happiness and life transformation. Using the Beatitudes of Jesus as a foundation, Senior Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church and John Baker, who is also a pastor at Saddleback, developed the eight choices shared in this book.

WASHINGTON PARISH FOOD BANK UPDATE Do not grow weary in doing good. ~ 2 Thessalonians 3:13 Annual recertification of our families has been completed, and we have begun once again to take applications. Any new applicants can now apply at the food bank but only on Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Food shortages have continued, and what we can order from Second Harvest is still very limited. However, some scheduled food drives from various local churches during their Vacation Bible Schools has helped us to survive during these lean months. A Lion’s Club in Metairie, which read about our food bank on our Facebook page, also contacted us and is now giving us their supply of canned goods every couple of weeks. God is certainly providing us with helping hands to do His ministry, and for that, we are truly thankful.
I would also like to share a few pictures of some of our youth groups who have volunteered with us this summer. They include youth from our church, some from Bowling Green who participate in a Bible study with our own Johnna Creel, and youth from St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Covington.
