A Monthly Newsletter of First Baptist Church
From your Interim Pastor . . . Another NEW Year!!! While no one really knows what 2019 holds, it is exciting to consider what might take place in the next twelve months. This is true in our personal lives, and surely in the life of First Baptist of Franklinton. The church can look forward to many “grace acts of God” in 2019. To name just a few . . . •

The arrival of your next God-appointed pastor and his family! The Pastor Search Committee is diligently at work. Their meetings are filled with prayer, unity, and careful work. While we cannot know when your new pastor will arrive, it is reasonable to think it will be this year. Are you ready? Another reverent, powerful walk through Holy Week. This year Holy Week, from Palm Sunday through Resurrection Day, takes place April 14th through 21st. Mark your calendar now so you can set this week aside for worship and prayer. The established walk with the Cross will once again sweep across the community. Another great Vacation Bible School! This annual week of ministry to children remains a powerful tool for evangelism and discipleship in children’s lives. Leaders are already at work planning for this time. In this coming year, we can believe God for the salvation of many sacred lives. This is at the heart of the mission of the church. Each year the church witnesses multiple people coming to know Jesus as Savior and Lord. May 2019 hold many baptisms! Believers, like you and me, growing in the Lord and serving Him more humbly and faithfully. First Baptist is blessed with many great teachers and small discipleship groups. Most of the growth in discipleship will not be seen by us, but heaven will not miss it! I pray each of us will experience this kind of growth.
Surely the church can look forward to an endless flow of God’s mercy and grace filling the year with both old and new experiences in the kingdom of God. As is true each year, there is work to be done in 2019. Our Lord calls each of us to worship and serve Him faithfully, and our faithfulness to Him is lived out through His body, the church. As we enter this new year let us make a renewed commitment to the basics in our lives in His church: •
Gather faithfully. None of us are sufficient by ourselves. God has made us a part of His body, the church. We are not complete in our faith without being knitted to other believers.
•
Live unselfishly. Jesus calls us to “take up our cross daily.” Most of the time this call is not lived out in great, heroic acts of unselfishness, but in daily acts of putting others ahead of ourselves. In the church, this means not seeing the church as a body to serve and please me, but an opportunity to give myself away for the sake of Jesus.
•
Give generously. Our giving to the church is both an act of obedience and an expression of love. We find great joy in giving to people we love, but how do we give to Jesus? By giving to His church.
•
Above all . . . To pray. To pray from a heart of love for Jesus, for the church, and for the lost. To pray humbly and faithfully for the kingdom of God to grow in this place!
It is going to be a great year! What a joy to share some of it with you!

In 2004, country singer Tim McGraw recorded a song entitled “Live Like You Were Dying.” The song tells the story of a man who gets the news that his father has a life-threatening illness. His dad's message is to live life to the fullest while embracing the deeper life values of love, kindness, and forgiveness. When the demo was played to McGraw, it struck a chord with him as his own father, former Major League baseball pitcher Tug McGraw, was dying from cancer at the time.

Upcoming Events
I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. -- Philippians
3:13-14
The song also struck a chord with listeners across the country. “Live Like You Were Dying” reached number one on the U.S. Billboard country music charts. It was named as the number one country song of 2004 by Billboard. It also won a Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance for Tim McGraw and was named Song of the Year during the 11th annual Inspirational Country Music Awards Show. As we face another New Year, we probably don’t have skydiving, mountain climbing, or bull riding on our to-do list. But the song, as well as Scripture, challenges us to live with intensity, intentionality, and intimacy. The Apostle Paul encourages us in Philippians 2 to press on with passion and purpose to reach the goals God has for us. In Ephesians 4, he teaches us to value our relationships and to be kind and tenderhearted forgiving one another just as God has forgiven us.
The father in the song encourages us to live with intentionally with our time and to value our relationships with intimacy. He said… “And I loved deeper, and I spoke sweeter, and I gave forgiveness I’ve been denying… I hope you get the chance, to live like you were dyin’… I was finally the husband that most the time I wasn’t and I became a friend a friend would like to have.” The son gets the message as he says, “And all the sudden goin’ fishing wasn’t such an imposition, and I went three times that year I lost my dad. Well, I finally read the good book, and I took a good long hard look at what I’d do If I could do it all again.” The New Year gives us a chance to take a long hard look at how life is going for us and how we can make it more like what it was designed to be. It offers us the opportunity to reevaluate our priorities and to decide to value our time and our relationships focusing on the things that are really important and the things which are of eternal value. Hopefully, it challenges us to realign our lives so that we capture the value of every relationship, every God-given opportunity, and every life moment. As the plaque on the wall says, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths that we take but by the moments that take our breath away.” We have a lot of life to live and a lot of life to give. May we, in this New Year, be intentional with our time and loving in our relationships; living our lives with passion and purpose. Praying for a great New Year and abundance of blessing for all of you.

Student Ministry January Memory Verse: “I have hidden Your Word in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” – Psalm 119:11
2019 … a new year and a new you! According to usa.gov, here are some of the top new year’s resolutions: lose weight, volunteer to help others, quit smoking, get a better education, get a better job, save money, get fit, eat healthy food, manage stress, manage debt, take a trip, and recycle. Now if you are anything like me, you read that list and thought, “yeah, I should probably make that my new year’s resolution.” The New Year brings about a new beginning, right? The New Year is a clean slate, a fresh start; just forget about last year; that’s in the past and this year is a new year. I find it interesting how people (including myself) always want to change something about themselves and the best time to do it is the New Year. Why is it we all want to change something about ourselves? As sinners, we desire to appease the flesh; we desire to live out our sinful desires; we indulge; we give in to temptations; we mess up, we choose the wrong thing. By our very nature, we are all children of wrath, and so we want to change that. Christians and non-Christians know that there is something within them that is just wrong and so we try to change. One of the differences between a non-Christian and Christian is, the Christian knows that we can not change ourselves. Only by the grace of God will I ever have a real clean slate and a fresh start. Only by the grace of God will I ever overcome this sin that is within me. Only by the grace of God will I change from a sinner
to a saint, one that is in the flesh to one that is in Christ. Only by the grace of God will He make me into His masterpiece. Only by the grace of God will I be what God has created me to be, HOLY. As Christians, God begins to change us when we confess Him as Lord of our life. In that moment of submission our hearts are forever changed, but also at that moment we are not fully changed. As Christians we are still sinners, we still desire the flesh, we still fall into temptation, and so we must change. This change happens we when continually submit to the Lordship of Christ and follow Him in obedience. For example: as Christians, we submit to the Lordship of Christ and allow Him to guide us through the stresses of this world. We can place all our anxieties and fears on Jesus as our Lord, and He is faithful to fill us with His joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, and self-control. God calls us as Christians to be about continual change to be more like Jesus. The only way we can continually change to be more like Christ is by submission and obedience. We submit and then follow that submission with obedience. Let us be about change this new year but let us remember our real eternal change only happens when we submit and obey to Jesus Christ.

Always appropriate for the beginning of a new year is a churchwide expression of very sincere gratitude for those who led us through the previous year. Thank you…to our ministry staff (Cody, Kelly, Joey, Paul, and most recently, Bro. Bob) for holding the standard high for faithfulness to our Lord in his calling on all of us to minister the Gospel to our community and beyond and to live “set apart” for the glory of God. Thank you…to our support staff (Natasha, Kaitlyn, Cathy, Linda, and Ted) for your daily labors to faithfully carry out the “nuts-andbolts” service that assures that it all gets done! Thank you…to Kelly and our Playschool teachers, who each day invest in the leaders of tomorrow, imparting a Christian world-view to all the things the kids are learning (eternally more than just “ baby-sitting”). Thank you…to our Deacon body for giving timely, practical, and, most of all, spiritual leadership to all the ministries of First Baptist Church. Sometimes the issues are difficult, but you speak to them in unity with peace and grace. Thank you…to Karen Spears for leading our Sunday School and to all of you who serve on various committees. To name you all would be to name a huge number of our church family; though it’s not possible here, just know that you are vital and very much appreciated. Thank you…to all of our worship leaders (sanctuary choir, senior singers, bell choir, praise team, sound and projection team, musicians). Your faithfulness will be rewarded in eternity!
Please everyone, allow me to express for all of us our gratitude to one very special lady…Mrs. Jerry Dick. As you may know, the last few months have been very difficult for her as she battles the inevitabilities of aging. For many years she has served as director of our Senior Singers and Bell Choir; before that she served as Music Director here at FBC for decades; before that and during, she taught music to generations of young musicians in the public school system. Mrs. Jerry, as you begin your 92nd year on planet earth, be assured that your church is and forever will be grateful for how you have given your gift of music to so many for so long. We love you and continue to pray for you and Mr. Carl. Don’t know where, when, or from whom I acquired the following; but I offer it again as a challenge to all of us in the year of our Lord, 2019: I will, like Paul, forget those things which are behind and press forward. I will, like David, lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence comes help. I will, like Abraham, trust implicitly in my God. I will, like Enoch, walk in daily fellowship with my Heavenly Father. I will, like Jehoshophat, prepare my heart to seek God. I will, like Moses, choose rather to suffer than enjoy the pleasures of sin. I will, like Daniel, commune with my God at all times. I will, like Job, be patient under all circumstances. I will, like Gideon, stand firm even though my friends be few. I will, like Isaiah, consecrate myself to God’s work. I will, like Andrew, strive to lead my brother to a closer walk with Christ. I will, like John, lean upon the bosom of the Master. I will, like Stephen, manifest a forgiving spirit toward all who hurt me. I will, like the Heavenly Host, proclaim the message of peace and good will.

WASHINGTON PARISH FOOD BANK UPDATE Do not grow weary in doing good. ~ 2 Thessalonians 3:13 It is hard to believe that 2018 is over and done and a new year is beginning. I pray your holidays were happy and blessed. We at the food bank and thrift shop were extremely happy to be closed for the first week of the new year. Our volunteers are all dedicated helpers and deserve this time off to rest and relax before we start again on January 7th. For all of you who have supported this ministry, whether with prayer, money, food, or other donations, I again give a sincere thank you. To those of you who regularly volunteer, thank you for your dedication to the task. I know that it’s not always easy but knowing that I can always count on you to be there when you say you will truly makes my job easier. I love and appreciate you so very much. As we start the new year, the food available from Second Harvest is still limited, but we are told it will get better. Please pray that this will indeed become a fact so that we will not have to reduce the amount of food we can give to our families. Donations are needed each month to supplement what we do not receive from Second
Harvest. Please pray that donations will increase, both food and money so that our 400 plus families can continue to receive this support. You just cannot imagine the hardships some of our families are struggling to survive within. Any monetary contributions designated for food and any extra available after rent and utilities are paid is used to purchase items needed, but not received. Our needs in the new year include continued food drives and any financial support available for food purchases. Food donations needed this month include carbohydrates such as rice, spaghetti, noodles, pasta sides, macaroni and cheese, and mashed potatoes, and also any canned vegetables or tuna. Please prayerfully consider supporting this important ministry in any of the ways mentioned. Also, volunteers who can commit to a regular day or days in the food bank or thrift shop would be a blessing to us…and to them.
HONDURAS MISSION I remember as a boy that one of my grandmothers loved to put jigsaw puzzles together. Whenever we visited her there was always a puzzle in some stage of completion on a card table in her living room. She would work at the puzzle for an hour or so and leave it for a while. But then she would come back to it, and the piece she had been searching for would appear and fit right into place. Eventually, over time, the puzzle would come together, piece by piece. Now you might be wondering what this has to do with a mission to Honduras. This past week Margie, her cousin, and I went to Dallas, Texas to work in the Operation Christmas Child processing center. Her cousin, who attends a small rural church, who had never been on a mission trip before, was a Honduras mission team member the second year we went to Buena Vista and Guayabo. Her part of the ministry was to relate the story of Daniel and the lion’s den. And she did a wonderful job. But as we were traveling to Dallas, it dawned on me how much a mission is like a jigsaw puzzle. Each piece has its own place, and fits into that place at the proper time. Whereas it may seem insignificant at the time, eventually it becomes part of the larger picture. Many of you who are reading this have gone with us to Honduras in person. Many have stayed behind and lifted up the mission in prayer. Many have supported the mission financially. Each of you are a part of the greater portrait that God is fusing together for His glory.
Beverly Cooke In the picture, the church in Buena Vista has gathered at 4 A.M. to pray and worship. Pastor David says in his comments, “We meet at four in the morning to worship God. I love the attitude of every church member are always ready to serve in the church.” Thank you all for being a part of this. Love in Christ,

First, let me express a heartfelt thank you to every individual and Sunday School class who packed shoe boxes, contributed supplies, or donated funding for shipping of the boxes in 2018. Also, many thanks to the 20 volunteers who helped at our drop off location during Collection Week. Volunteers from FBC, Briarwood Baptist, Hays Creek Baptist, and Holy Family Catholic Church received and packed 2210 shoebox gifts into cartons to begin their journey into the hands of children around the globe. The shoebox gifts we received came from 24 area churches and 3 schools. After Collection Week the cartons of shoebox gifts travel to one of the 8 processing centers around the U. S. where thousands of volunteers process millions of boxes for shipping to their final destination. First Baptist Church packed and sent 540 shoebox gifts this year, (down from 1,146 in 2017.) Our boxes are sent to the Dallas processing center where Dale and I, and my cousin Sylvia Graves volunteered to work on December 6 and 7. What a joy it was to see hundreds of people happily inspecting, adding donated filler items, removing items not allowed, taping and packing the cartons for final shipment to receiving countries, and praying together for the shoeboxes! Franklin Graham of Samaritans Purse Operation Christmas Child stated that his purpose for OCC is to “Raise up an army of evangelists” and to “see kids leading kids to Christ.” Shoebox gifts are fun, but what comes out of them is eternal. How is the Lord leading you to participate in this ministry in 2019? Watch The Bridge and bulletins for plans concerning Operation Christmas Child 2019. Thank you again, and God bless, Margie Parker
