A Monthly Newsletter of First Baptist Church
Beyond the Superficial One of the difficulties of our present culture is nurturing depth in relationships. We have 1000 friends on Facebook, yet we know so few of them beyond the superficial or the surface knowledge of who they are, where they live and work, names of their kids, hobbies, etc.… Every once in a while we come across someone that is, to use a very trite term, a “kindred spirit.” They are easy to talk to, we enjoy spending time with one another, and we form deep connections relatively quickly. Our personalities are compatible, and most often we are in the same stage of life. We have a great many shared interests and activities. We enjoy this deep friendship for a time, but often the rigors of life or changes in circumstances cause us to drift apart. These relationships come and go over the course of our lives. I believe deep relationships are part of God’s grace given to His human creation. Christians and pagans alike share the benefits of these relationships, but I believe there is a possibility for deep relationships among brothers and sisters in Christ that are beyond the closeness we may enjoy in earthly friendships. Jesus told His disciples on numerous occasions that the world would know they were His disciples due to their love for one another. This assumes a love that is deeper and more constant that the run of the mill or even the exceptional human friendship.
The tragedy is that many Christians never experience the deep relationships within the Body of Christ that Jesus was talking about. They attend worship or maybe even a small group Bible study, yet this type of relationship eludes them. Why? They never come alongside their fellow believers as disciples on a mission for Christ. They may attend worship or Sunday school, yet they do not see themselves involved and responsible in the common struggle to grow in Christlikeness and glorify Christ. We are equipped for this type of relationship, yet we do not resource the source. The source is the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. He is present in the heart of every redeemed believer. He is whom we have in common. We do not have a kindred spirit. We have the same Spirit. This means you and I may have nothing in common from a worldly perspective yet still be able to love one another in a way that is deeper and different than worldly friendship due to the presence of the Spirit in our lives. How is this accomplished? This morning I was in a small group Bible study with a group of men. I have seen men is this group grow closer to the Lord and in fellowship with one another. After our meeting, a few guys hung around to listen to one of our brothers who is struggling through an issue, gave him Godly counsel and encouragement, and prayed for him. There was a depth and richness to this time that I do not
experience nearly often enough within the body of Christ. I have seen this happen in other small group Bible studies when brothers were willing to hold one another accountable in certain areas of life. I have seen it happen on mission trips when Christians were stretched beyond their areas of comfort and learned anew and afresh their need for dependence on the Holy Spirit and one another. There is depth and love in these relationships that is not of this world. I believe it is a foretaste of the relationships we will enjoy in Heaven. Philippians 1:3-11 is a record of Paul’s greeting to the Philippian church. This was a church that the Lord had brought about through some miraculous circumstances (Acts 16). Paul enjoyed a relationship with the believers there that was not limited by proximity, circumstances, or hardship. It was a relationship forged through spiritual travail and suffering. It was a relationship empowered by the Holy Spirit. Are we willing to seek that which is beyond the superficial? We don’t seek these relationships for their own sake. When we seek first the Glory of God in the community, these relationships will be the natural outcome.
God Bless…

In John 15, Jesus gives this beautiful illustration of a vine and the branches. Within the illustration, Jesus identifies Himself as the vine and identifies His followers as branches. In John 15:4, Jesus illustrates the mark of a true follower of Him. “Remain in Me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me.” The mark of a true follower of Jesus – Remain. We must be careful not to take this verse out of context. We must understand what Jesus means by “remain.” There are several definitions for the word “remain,” but this one seems to go along best with what Jesus is saying: “Continue to possess a particular quality or fulfill a particular role.” Jesus Christ, fully man and fully God, came to this Earth, born of a virgin, and lived a perfect life. Perfect Jesus perfected lived out the Law in His actions, His attitude and even down to His very nature. In His perfection, He died on a cross, not because He did anything, but God made Him, Jesus, who knew no sin, to be sin on our behalf so that we might have the righteousness of God. Jesus did not stay dead; He was resurrected! When we place our faith in Jesus and confess Him as
Lord, He forgives us of our sin and makes us a new creation. Our role as new creatures is to remain in that newness by producing fruit. John 15:4 gives the impression that a person (branch) who remains in Christ will produce fruit (because they are connected to the vine). What kind of fruit should a person who remains in Christ produce? Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, self-control. Against such things, there is no law.” As we remain faithful to Jesus even in the most difficult of circumstances, the Spirit inside of us ought to be producing the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Remain in Jesus and produce fruit for His Glory!
MISSION TRIP UPDATES Dear Church Family, For many years, the mission field of Africa has been a deep and consistent calling that the Lord has placed in my heart. Recently, He opened the doors of opportunity which allowed me to join Bethany World Ministries, Inc. on an adventure beginning this summer. On July 5th, I will fly out to meet missionary Sherrie Avery in Lusaka, Zambia. There I will be working with the dental needs of adults and children. This will include many duties which I have been learning but have never done, such as extractions and fillings. I will also have the enormous blessing and honor of working with nine orphaned children. This includes transferring them into a new orphanage facility, setting up and decorating their new rooms. How exciting is that! My hope and prayer is that we can make it a warm and loving place as every child deserves this in a home. Many of you have expressed a desire to help by sending gifts to the children. When asked about this, Sherrie stressed that survival is their primary goal. Thus, items such as socks and school supplies are essential. I have been asked to pack dental supplies as the needs have exceeded her supplies this year. For this, I am depending on the guidance and assistance of local dentists. Additionally, the children have expressed an interest in soccer balls with pumps and board games. Their exposure to games has been limited to checkers and chess. It will be fun to teach and play a new variety of games with them. Mailing these items is not an option as it would take around six months for them to be delivered if at all. So, I will be taking as much as I can with me. I have set up a wish list on Amazon in my name. If you wish to help, you can order school supplies, soccer balls, stuffed bears, and games through this means, and the orders can be delivered directly to me. If you wish to buy socks, the children, both boys and girls, vary in size and age from toddler to preteen. You can deliver these to the church office or directly to me. Please be in prayer this month as I gather items and as I learn more about the skills I will need and prepare to embark on this much-anticipated journey. I will return on July 28th with many stories to share of God’s faithfulness. Next year, I hope to go to Zambia again establishing deeper relationships and Christian fellowship with these people. Pray fervently that God’s will is revealed in all of this that we might follow only where He leads and that you might know if you have a place in these endeavors. I hope that some of you will join me in the coming years. Blessings,
Denise Gatewood
Greetings to you all, Every time I get ready to take a team of people to Honduras, I am always amazed at how the Lord puts together our team. This past April we had a team of 12 (including 4 teens, and one pre-teen) go to Honduras during spring break to do Vacation Bible School, and to frame up a new dormitory on the Ignite mission property. Out of the 12 of us that went, only 4 had been before. I love to take new people to Honduras and to watch how the Lord works in their lives and to hear their comments at the end of the week sharing time of how what they expected and what they experienced differed. Vacation Bible School in Honduras is not like here in the U.S. There are language and cultural barriers that can seem daunting, and this year we ministered to over 170 children in two different schools. In the U.S. people new to teaching/leading VBS may have someone else to lean on to help them. However, in Honduras, our newbies have to “jump into the deep end and learn how to swim.” It’s always a great time of spiritual growth as we all learn to trust the Lord more and more. Our construction crew ministered to Sam and Peggy as we framed up the second dormitory on the mission property. The two mission teams coming after us will put on the roof and siding and do the electrical and plumbing work. We also attended two worship services at Word of Truth Baptist Church in Buena Vista and shared the gospel with a group of local teens near the mission house in Linaca. However, perhaps the greatest news out of Honduras is that 16 members of our little fledgling church in Buena Vista have gone on their first mission trip to the Island of Amapala! They went to encourage the Baptist Church there, to do street evangelism, and make contact with people; and they had a huge church service where one man repented of his sin and gave his life to Christ. To me, this is what missions is all about: sharing the gospel, planting churches, then equipping and encouraging the local congregations to be missional themselves. So I want to send a big Thank You to all of you who are reading this, especially if you have prayed for us all these years, given to the mission all these years, provided support for David and Nellie and Ignite Missions for all these years. The fruit of your labors is beginning to bear, and God is getting the increase. God’s blessings to you all,
Bro. Dale Parker

Over the last few weeks, those of us going south to Covington or to the New Orleans area on Highway 25 have had to take a detour because of the road construction. Detours take us on a different path and usually take longer. Nobody wants to have to detour. However, when it comes to our spiritual lives, many of us find ourselves on perpetual detours. Some of these detours are due to circumstances, but many are due to the choices we make in life. If you read Deuteronomy 2, you find that after years of wilderness wandering, God told His people that they had circled long enough, and it was time to move on with His plan for them. When God called them to have faith and to take the promised land, they chose unbelief. What they got was a 40-year detour. God calls us to an abundant life of following Him by faith and in obedience to His Word. When we choose unbelief, disobedience, neglect of our relationship with God, or a multitude of similar responses, we take a detour from the walk that God has for us. We also miss the abundant victorious life that God has for us. If you find yourself detouring off the path that God has for you to walk, just remember that the shortest way to get where God wants you to go is by simply following Jesus. He is our way, our truth, and our life. He called us to deny self, take up our cross daily and follow Him. We were encouraged through the Senior Adult Revival to follow the Lord and walk in revival. It was a great event, and we were blessed to visit other churches and to fellowship with believers from churches across this side of Washington Parish. The attendance was good, and there was a spirit of revival in each of
the services. Thanks to our members who helped us host the Friday revival meeting. Special thanks to Mrs. Linda Richardson and the senior adult committee for organizing and serving in such a wonderful way. Thanks also to our deacons and wives for hosting the meal for our Senior Adult Day here at First Baptist on the Sunday before the revival. UPCOMING LUNCHEONS Our next Adult 55+ Fellowship Luncheon will be this Friday, June 1, at 10:30 am. Wayne Kuhn will be our guest speaker and will bring a bit of humor and legal wisdom to the fellowship. Senator Beth Mizell will be our speaker for the July luncheon. DAY TRIPS Your Senior Adult Committee is planning some day trips for the coming months. If you read this by May 31st, you’re not too late to see Palestine Gardens in Lucedale. Other trips on the horizon include the World War II Museum, the movies, and others, including simply a day out to eat lunch at a favorite restaurant. FALL PIGEON FORGE TRIP By now you hopefully know that we have a Pigeon Forge trip planned for October 29thNovember 2nd. We are receiving deposits for the trip now, and several have already reserved their spot. Brochures of the shows and attractions that we plan to visit as well as the trip flyer are available at the church office. The cost of the trip is $575, and a $150 deposit is required to reserve your place on the trip. After June, we will open registration churchwide and to those outside First Baptist Church, so be sure to reserve your place during June.
premise, but the real question is not whether the older generation should inform the younger, but what should they teach? You and I know that the world has only questions and no answers. The referenced song was written during the turbulent 1960s, when song writers and other philosophers, just as now, shared their versions of the truth. Truth is relative and subjective, they would say. You and I know that is a recipe for disaster, leaving one in bondage to sin, without Truth, and headed for a confrontation with Holy God and eternal judgment.

The verses from Proverbs and Deuteronomy are two familiar ones that remind us how eternally important it is to teach our children the Truth, that which has come to us in the Holy Scriptures, written by men appointed by God and inspired by the Holy Spirit. I’m preaching to the choir here, for sure, but also I am reminding us all that we have no greater ministry than that of teaching our kids the Word of God, which is the only trustworthy code by which to live life (see the opening line of the song).
All of the preceding is a somewhat verbose way of encouraging you to make sure your kids are in Sunday School every week and enrolled in Vacation Bible School, the details of which you will find elsewhere in The Bridge. Someone has said that if we don’t teach our children to love God, the world will teach them not to. Kelly and Cody “Train up a child in the way he should have invested themselves in ministries that go, and when he is old, he will not depart teach kids about the love of God through from it.” Proverbs 22:6 Jesus. It’s finally here! June means Vacation Bible School and Vacation Bible School means kids! I certainly hope you have been in prayer for those of us that are involved in the day to day ministry of VBS and the children that it brings into our church and in touch with the gospel. We can’t wait to share the love of Jesus with the children that God will send our way! If you aren’t available or able to help with the daily work of VBS, please know that having a strong church family praying for us is so very important!

Pack-A-Purse Project. It is a sad reality that thousands of women and children flee their homes due to unthinkable abuse, neglect, and violence. Most will flee with nothing more than the clothes on their backs and without warning. Have a purse at home that you no longer want? Fill it with items that would be a much needed blessing for a woman in that situation. The purses will be donated to the Southeast Spouse Abuse Program. Here are suggested ideas for your purse: Travel size shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, body wash, hairspray, toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, feminine products, hair brush, barrettes, ponytail holder, or gift cards to fast food places, Wal-Mart, CVS, or Walgreens.

WASHINGTON PARISH FOOD BANK UPDATE Do not grow weary in doing good. ~ 2 Thessalonians 3:13
Annual recertification, as required by Second Harvest, is now in progress at the food bank and will continue through this month. It started off slowly the first week but will really increase by week two. With the extra paperwork required for recertification, it takes a little longer for each person coming in to sign up and shop, but there have been no real problems so far. Our food items available through Second Harvest continue to be very limited, and we have again had to buy some canned vegetables to meet the needs for this month. We were fortunate enough to order and receive rice in May, which was the first time it was available since October 2017, and enough meat has also been obtained to meet the needs for this month.
fruit, and dried beans. I want to thank once again those of you who are putting food items in the food bank container at church or are bringing them to the food bank itself. All items are greatly appreciated and do so much to help us meet the needs of our families each month. We could not do what we do without your support. The items most needed for this month would be canned protein (such as spaghetti and meatballs and ravioli) dried beans, canned vegetables, and macaroni and cheese.
Please continue to pray for the food bank and our families. With school out for the summer, many of the families will be having a difficult time trying to feed children who have been having two meals at school. Most of us are so blessed that we do not even think about friends and classmates of our children and We were also fortunate that grandchildren having to go this was our year to receive hungry. Unfortunately, this the food from the annual will be a reality for many of mail carriers’ food drive our families. The Power of Prayer Prayer is the core foundation of Operation Christmas Child. One volunteer from Ohio has stated that we must send our prayers up to the Lord before we can be effective in reaching out with the gospel horizontally. Shoebox gifts are prayed over as they are packed by individuals and churches, when they are taken to a drop-off location like FBC Franklinton, at the processing centers, and before they are distributed to children. Join us in prayer: All 11+ million shoebox gifts cannot be delivered by December 25th, so they are being distributed all year long, and children are participating in the 12 lesson discipleship course The Greatest Journey. Pray for the distributions, the Bible lessons, and the receiving children. For the hundreds of thousands of volunteers in the U.S. and receiving countries as we encourage people to pack shoeboxes and coordinate their distribution in over 100 countries worldwide so that the gospel can be heard. May God will continue to bless OCC in 2018.
