THE BIRTHPLACE OF TRUE HOLINESS Message from the Interim Pastor Bro. Bob Adams In these days when some unholy acts by Baptist leaders are spelled out in the headlines, it might be well for us to dig beyond the surface of the ugliness and think Biblically about the meaning of true holiness – in spiritual leaders as well as ourselves. Holiness may be born of either fear or love. Fear-Birthed holiness is often motivated by self-centeredness. A person refrains from certain sins because those sins keep him from achieving his goals. A pastor may long to be seen as successful but knows adultery would destroy his chance for success. This kind of holiness may also come from a concept of God that terrifies the believer and spends his life waiting for God’s judgment to fall. The illustrations of this fear-born holiness are manifold. Much of a person’s respectful behavior may be rooted in selfishness. Holiness birthed by fear expresses itself in ministry that is legalistic and often angry. The spiritual leader demands conformity to certain behaviors and enforces this with threats of disaster and judgment.
4 / The Br idg e
It IS better to be holy from fear than to be unholy! However, there is a better way! The holiness that grows from love expresses the heart of God. A believer (spiritual leader or not) purifies his life because he wants to delight the person he loves. Out of love for God, the pastor desires his life to be a joy to God. This pastor abhors the unholy, not just because it will injure him, but because it will grieve the heart of the Lord, whom he loves. Such a person is as holy on a deserted island as in a great crowd. The church whose pastor is motivated by love for Jesus does not need to fret over the pastor’s behavior when he is behind closed doors or at a distant meeting. Love for God controls and, thus, purifies his life. The pastor or spiritual leader whose holiness comes from fear promotes lists of acceptable and unacceptable behaviors and checks you off on the items. The pastor whose holiness flows from love shows you the heart of God and calls you to live worthy of such a One.
In these days with its headlines, and as the church seeks a pastor, pray for a pastor who is holy, but look beyond the moral uprightness of his life (although that must be there) and discover the motivations for his uprightness. The reason for his holiness makes all the difference! In the meantime, let us remember that the call to holiness was given equally to all believers, including you and me. Let us grow more and more in love with Jesus. As we do, the purity of our life will increase, and that purity will be all set about with loveliness and wonder!
Memory Verses for March 2019 Sunday March 3rd, 2019 “If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.” John 13:14
Sunday March 10th, 2019
“Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.” Acts 2:46-47
Sunday March 24th, 2019
“But Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.” Luke 23:34
Sunday March 31st, 2019
“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21
Sunday March 17th, 2019 “And with great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was upon them all.” Acts 4:33

The little boy was having a hard time getting to sleep. Only minutes after being tucked in, he called to his parents for a drink of water. After being settled in again, not much time had passed before he called for his mom. Knowing he needed reassurance, his mom spent a moment with him and assured him that she and dad were just down the hall. She tucked him in again and went to bed. After a while, he called out again. Mom sent Dad. Although nothing was really wrong, the little fellow was having some uncomfortable moments about sleeping by himself. The dad reminded his son that he was not alone; that God was with Him. “But Dad,” replied the son, “I want a God with skin on him.” Aren’t we all like that at times? God has given us great promises of His love and faithfulness. He has given us His Word where He promises to be with us. He walks with us through the person of the Holy Spirit. We are assured that Christ is within us. But when times of uncertainty, fear, doubt, etc. come against us, we want “a God with skin 6 / The Br idg e
on Him.” We yearn for a God that we can see and touch. We want one who will sit beside us and reassure us and hold our hand through the tough time and tell us what to do and help us do it. In reality, God has promised to do all of that. We have the power of His presence. We have the weight of His Word and His promises that are real to us. He reminds us of His love and grace, His favor and delight toward us. But to realize it and receive it, we must walk by faith and not by sight. We are called to trust God and walk in the reality of His presence when we can’t see Him with physical eyes. Life is filled with challenges and difficulties. During these trying times, we often call out to God in our need thinking that He is distant and that He doesn’t see or know what is going on with us. Rest assured that He sees, He knows, and He is with us. He promised to never leave us or forsake us. We must simply thank Him for His presence and in faith celebrate His goodness knowing that with His presence comes His peace and provision.

With summer quickly approaching, I feel it necessary to write about our upcoming summer camp. You may not have any teenagers in the Student Ministry, but you can share this information with the teenagers you know. Feel free to invite teenagers you know to be a part of this summer’s summer camp! The dates for this year’s Camp Fuego is June 17th – 21st for grades 7th-12th in Eunice, La at Acadian Baptist Center. Camp Fuego began in 1998 in an attempt to provide student ministries with a quality camp at a reasonable price. Fuego desires to provide the experience of a big camp at a small camp price. The total cost for the camp is $210, which includes the deposit. To secure your teenager’s spot for Camp Fuego a deposit needs to be paid. Once your deposit is paid, your name is written down in Bro. Cody’s book of who is going to Camp Fuego. Notice the deposit price at the side of this article. For more information on Camp Fuego, you can visit their website at www.campfuego.com. In an attempt to raise the money needed for camp, the church is allowing the Student Ministry to conduct Youth Sunday, where the money will be donated towards the youth attending summer camp. Any youth who would like the church to support him/her going to summer camp needs to participate in Youth Sunday. If an individual does not participate in Youth Sunday, he/ she will have to pay the full amount for camp. Youth Sunday will take place on Sunday, April 28th (Both Services and
Sunday School). Any youth helping with Youth Sunday will be asked to teach an adult Sunday School class (9:30 a.m.) AND participate in the worship services (8:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.). There are two Sunday School training days that are geared towards teaching the youth the material. These will take place on Sunday, April 14th and/or Sunday, April 21st. Your teenager needs to attend at least one of those. Wednesday, April 24th at 6:00 p.m. the youth will practice for the Youth Sunday worship service. Those attending Camp Fuego are required to attend a youth AND parent meeting on Sunday, May 19th at 5:00 p.m. in the upstairs Youth Room. Summer camp is a great opportunity for students to grow in their relationship with Christ as well as grow in their relationships with others. My prayer is that all the youth are excited about summer camp as I am and are willing and able to go to this year’s summer camp. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me and/or email me. My email is fbc.codythomas@gmail.com. Thank you!
A Note from Bro. Butch Reviere While many plants are showing new
growth already, including various blooming weeds that offer misery to us allergy sufferers, Spring doesn’t officially begin until March 20th. Many people think of January each year as the time to begin anew. For me, however, and for many of you, Spring is the time when “new beginnings” are seen all around us as our part of the world begins to warm, and signs of new life are all around us. Think about it for a moment. Every day, every week, every hour, every minute, every month, every year, every decade, every event, every relationship, every activity, every book, every chapter, every planet, every star, every one of the us… the list could go on and on! Almost anything you could think of has one, except for God Himself. So what do they all have in common? They all have a beginning, a starting point, a moment when something that was not, suddenly is. Yes, but what is the point, you may ask? Everybody who knows anything at all about the Bible could quote Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” “In the beginning, God” is a phrase that should have significant meaning for every Believer. What if every Christian considered all of the “beginnings” in his or her life and determined that all of them would
begin with an invitation for God not only to be involved, but also to be in control? Would our days and all the activities within them gain new purpose? Would our relationships be different and better? Would our world-view be impacted? Would the entirety of our lives be more in tune with God’s will and His specific calling on each of us? Would we be aware of and enjoy His Presence more profoundly?
“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
Anita will verify that I am not what you call a “morning” person. I’m more like a bear emerging from hibernation. I try to be cordial, but it comes with difficulty! Awaking from sleep is more of a process than a moment in time for me. However, one of the most important goals of my life is to begin every day with a fresh commitment to God and to express that to Him with a prayer of desire that my life honor and glorify Him all throughout the day. Many of our mentors have suggested that as we awaken or put our feet on the floor, we should train ourselves to think first of Jesus and our relationship with Him. I confess this to be a struggle for me very often, not only because of my slowness to wake up, but also because the pressing issues of daily living are unrelenting and can easily crowd Him out of my thoughts. As I said, it’s a goal. It’s a work in progress with failures and successes, but with determined intent to fully implement Psalm 118:25:
If we can develop the discipline of beginning each day this way, just maybe there will be a sanctifying impact on every other aspect of our daily lives. “Father God, may our lofty ideals become our daily reality as we allow the Holy Spirit to work out Your purpose in us, and as we commit all our “beginnings” to You, may we be salt and light to everyone we encounter, today and every day. Amen.”
Perhaps you would join me in renewing a desire to invite God into our consciousness every day at its very beginning. There can be no doubt that a day beginning with prayer, praise, thanksgiving and focus on Him will be better than one begun without prayer, praise, thanksgiving, and focus on Him!

FBC Kids News I’ve had the joy of spending a large part of the last month in prayer and preparation for our VBS this summer! If you haven’t already done so, please spend some time in prayer about how God can use you to help out for this year’s VBS. Much help is needed in the week leading up to VBS, as well as during the week of our Vacation Bible School. If you are interested in helping, please check out our FBC Kids bulletin board where you can sign up to be a part of our wonderful VBS Team. We will be hosting an informational meeting and luncheon following the 10:45 a.m. service on Sunday, March 10th and ask that anyone who is interested, please sign up by March 3rd so we can have an accurate count for food. Because we will be discussing curriculum, we respectfully ask that volunteers make other arrangements for their children so that we don’t spoil the surprise for what’s coming up! Here’s what to look forward to in March: March Madness Food Drive: During the entire month of March, our Preschoolers and Children will begin their competition for this summer’s VBS by participating in a food drive for the Washington Parish Food Bank. Their shelves are a bit bare, and they specifically need cans of tuna fish and boxes of macaroni and cheese. On Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings, children can bring a food item and put it in their team can. All totals from the month will be added
1 0 / The Br idg e
to the totals for their team during VBS, the winning team for the month will be treated to a special treat on the first Sunday and Wednesday in April. You may wonder what team your child is on. Here are our team colors: Nursery, Preschool & Kindergarten are TEAM YELLOW! First and Second Grades are TEAM GREEN! Third and Fourth Grades are TEAM BLUE! Fifth and Sixth Grades are TEAM RED! Let’s get a jump on our missions offering and show our friends at the Washington Parish Food Bank how much we love them! Sunday, March 3rd: Deadline to sign up for the VBS Team luncheon. See the FBC Kids bulletin board for the sign-up sheet. Sunday, March 10th: VBS Team Training & Luncheon. We will begin handing out curriculum on this date as well. Sunday, March 17th: Sign-ups begin for Children’s Honor Choir & Worship Weekend. Information for the revamped program has just been received. This year’s program will take place on Friday and Saturday, April 12th and 13th. It is for children currently in grades 4-6. The cost is $50 and includes all food
and lodging. Children will have the opportunity to choose to participate in Honor Choir, Trashcan Drumline, Praise in Motion, Puppets, or Hand Chimes. It will be held at Tall Timbers in Woodworth, LA. Due to the distance we have to travel, we expect to leave around noon on Friday, April 12th and will be back on the evening of Saturday, April 13th. The deadline to sign your child up for this event is Wednesday, March 27th. Areas in need of volunteers: We are currently in need of at least two nursery volunteers for our toddlers. Please email Kelly if you would like to volunteer. Our nursery volunteers serve approximately 3-4 times per calendar year. Volunteers must be church members, at least 21 years of age, and willing to have a criminal background check on file. Wee Worship has an immediate need for two Wee Worship leaders, for services during the 10:45 a.m. on April 28th & May 5th, and one for both the 8:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. services on May 19th, one for both and one for both the 8:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. services on May 26th. These can be split into two consecuttive 8:15 a.m. services for one volunteer and two consecutive 10:45 a.m. services for one volunteer. Please email Kelly if you would like to volunteer. Volunteers must be church members, at least 21 years of age, and willing to have a criminal background check on file.

We have a new Bible Study starting March 6th, 2019 at 5:45 pm in the Circle Joy classroom. We Saved you a Seat by Lisa Jo Baker.
Book Cost $13
In this 7-session Bible study, Lisa-Jo Baker and friends from (in)courage explore our relationship with Jesus as the ultimate model for authentic friendship. Nothing shapes us like the impact of a friend - it’s how Jesus radically and intimately connects with us. So instead of chasing perfection, overcome your fear of being known and find the courage to connect.
The Ruth Sunday School class provided our muffins and other refreshments. Thank you again, Mrs. Janice Adams, for sharing with us.

Local Missions Ministries Sponsored by FBC Franklinton
Washington Parish Food Bank & Thrift Store The month of February continued with increased numbers coming to certify for the food bank each week. By mid-month, there were 524 families on our roll. With two more Tuesdays left to certify in, there were already 1,140 people to serve which included 314 children through the age of 17, 590 adults ages 18 through 64, and 246 senior adults age 65 and above. With eight (8) food choice shopping days each month, this means that 65 plus families would be coming to us for food each of those eight days. This amount makes for a long and exhausting day for our volunteers. Serving that many families each month also puts a severe strain on our ability to have enough amounts of food to just provide for their basic needs. Therefore, it has become necessary to temporarily stop taking any new food bank applications effective March 1st. We will, however, continue to meet any emergency needs. While ceasing to certify new people, we will still have to strive to serve those households we currently have properly. Food drives and
donations will still be vital to meet these needs. We were fortunate to have just received a wonderful food drive from Franklinton High School which will certainly help. Thanks to all the students who participated and to Toni Tageant for organizing the drive.

Operation Christmas Child
Items most needed this month are tuna, spaghetti pasta, macaroni and cheese, rice sides, soups, and any kind of noodles. We currently have 34 awesome volunteers, 10 in the Thrift Shop and 24 in the food bank. Most only work one day so more is required to cover all four days of operation. While I love them all, some are unable to stay the whole time on the day they do work. Therefore, we really could use some more, particularly in the Thrift Shop. Won’t you think about being one of those volunteers? The pay is low (as in zero), but the reward is HUGE! Pray for our ministry and see if you might be the next volunteer we need. Thank you.

Mission Opportunities Greetings to you all, I’d like to begin by thanking all of you who attended our fundraiser for Ignite Missions back in January. And thank you for your support of Sam and Peggy and all of Ignite Missions. If any of you are following Sam and Peggy on Facebook, you know by now that they are back in Honduras and getting ready for the team season. The goal of missions is to proclaim the gospel with the aim of planting churches. Mission work is different from ministry and yet both are alike. Missions seeks to address the spiritual need of people, whereas ministry seeks to meet their physical needs. As Christians we often meet the physical needs of people, it’s a spiritual act of service unto the Lord. Everyone who is a child of God should endeavor to do this. As I read and study Scripture I find that missions is different from ministry. A missionary is, by definition, someone who is called out and set apart by the church to go and proclaim the gospel with the aim of planting a church. Where they go may be local or afar. And so, a missional church is a church that is aware of the lostness of a group of people in an area due to a lack of Christ’s presence by the proclamation of the true gospel; that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, according to Scripture alone, to the glory of God alone (Ephesians 2: 1-10), and by and under the leading of the Holy Spirit they set apart people to do the mission work of the church. (Acts 13:1-3) This year there are eight folks from Louisiana traveling down to Honduras May 20th – 26th to work in the village of Montanita where there is no evangelical church. Last year we began a work there, and we hope to continue proclaiming the gospel again this year with the aim of one day planting a local evangelical church. As we prepare to go to Honduras, we covet your prayers for the people of Montanita, that the Lord is already drawing and preparing people to hear His gospel proclaimed. Pray for the church that He will plant in that village. Also, pray for us, that we would be faithful to this task for His glory. Thanks and God bless, Bro. Dale
