Passing the Test

Paul Watts, Pastor

fbc.paulwatts@gmail.com

Plans are being made to start new groups in June. May we accept the challenge to prepare in faith for the tests we are assured will come. If you are interested, please contact me directly through the church office or my email, fbc.paulwatts@gmail.com. 2

Last month, many of our students were engaged in prolonged, intense testing. I can remember enduring spring testing as an elementary and junior high student. While these tests were a real drag, the pressure did not seem nearly as great. The difference in felt pressure was directly related to the difference in the consequences of the results. I was never told one of those tests would keep me from passing to the next grade or cause me to have to attend summer school. I was never told my performance would affect my teachers’ rating or the rating (grade) of my school. It is easy to see the rationale for these types of tests. Right or wrong, there has to be some way of measuring the progress of students and the quality of our educational system. There may be other, even better ways to evaluate this progress, but testing seems to be the present reality for our students. Followers of Jesus Christ are assured that tests will come. Jesus urged His disciples to be prepared for the trials, tribulations, and persecutions they would face. The Apostles wrote many of the letters of the New Testament in order to urge the believers to be strong and persevere in the midst of trials that would test their faith in Jesus. When we read of the persecutions and trials suffered by the apostles and the early church fathers, the testing of our faith may seem insignificant by comparison, yet our present tests are just as real and revealing. We do not run the risk of imprisonment, torture, or death simply because we are willing to confess Jesus as Lord, but we are put on display before a watching world. The world is watching and our test scores are on display for the world to see. They will either glorify our Teacher, Lord, and Master, or they will show the weakness and immaturity of our Christian life. If we know these tests are coming, how do we prepare? Unfortunately, many of us live our lives as if these tests will never come. We are like the student who is busy about many things, distracted, and procrastinating until only moments before the exam, hurriedly scanning over the material at the last minute. It is no wonder that type of student rarely passes the test. How much better would it have been for that student to read a little each day, to make preparing a part of his regular routine, and to truly commit the lessons to memory that he might recall them when the time of testing comes? What a picture of the life of the committed disciple of Jesus Christ! God is not in heaven receiving any type of sick joy by creating tests for us that will leave us defeated, exhausted, and overwhelmed. It is His desire to receive glory as we overcome the tests of this world by faith. He has given us His own Holy Spirit to empower us and fill us, His word to inform us and prepare us, His church to support and encourage us, and prayer to give us opportunity to converse and commune with Him. If we want to pass the tests of this life, we cannot wait until we find ourselves face to face with the trial or temptation to pray, open our Bibles, call on the church, and ask for the filling of the Holy Spirit. We need to live these things daily, that we will be ready when test day arrives. The test may be difficult, long, and painful, but the results will leave no doubt that we serve the King of Glory, and the passing of the test was accomplished through His power and not our own. Discipleship Essentials is an intense, high accountability, discipleship group with a six month commitment. It is designed to challenge you to grow in your faith as you become well-grounded in some of the basic doctrines of the faith. More than thirty of our church members have gone through this study. If you are interested, please contact me directly through the church office or my email, fbc.paulwatts@gmail.com. Plans are being made to start new groups in June. May we accept the challenge to prepare in faith for the tests we are assured will come.

Dale Parker, Minister to Senior Adults & Discipleship Training

fbc.daleparker@gmail.com

There’s a story about a kindergarten teacher who asked one of her students what he was drawing. Without pausing to look up, he said, “A picture of God.” The teacher smiled and responded, “But nobody knows what God looks like.” The boy carefully put down his crayon, looked her squarely in the eye, and declared, “They will when I’m finished.” It’s true, no one has ever seen God, yet His glory is displayed all around us every day. But is it seeing God Himself in person, or is it His character that we long for? Some would say both. But God has shown us Himself in His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. In Colossians 1:15- 19, the apostle Paul gave nine ways that Christ displayed God’s character. He wrote that Jesus, “...is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that were created that are in heaven and that are on the earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in Him all things should dwell...” This is a wonderful list of characteristics that explain God’s character found in His Son, but an unapplied Christ is no Christ at all to us. So how do we apply these truths to our lives? Re-read

Scripture Verses for May:

May 3 - “Examine yourselves as to whether

you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you?unless indeed you are disqualified.” 2 Corinthians 13:5

May 10 - “Do you not know that you are the

temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” 1 Corinthians 3:16

May 17 - “Most assuredly, I say to you, he

who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” John 5:24

the passage in your favorite Bible and ask yourself these five questions. Write down your answers: 1. Considering Jesus. What is this passage telling me about my Lord? 2. Adoring Jesus. What do I see here that is worthy of my adoration, and how can I express that to Him? 3. Depending on Jesus. What do I see in Jesus that is worthy of my trust, and how can I express or live out my trust in Him? 4. Calling upon Jesus. How do the things I see to be true of Jesus affect the way I call upon Him in prayer? 5. Obeying Jesus. Even where there are not commands or principles for me to follow, how do the things that I learned about Jesus affect my obedience to Him? Jesus was enough for Paul in a prison cell. Is He enough for you in your present circumstances? What in your lifestyle gives proof to the world that you live with this fact? God Bless, Brother Dale

Student Ministry Upcoming Events

Here recently there has been one verse on my heart, Luke 9:23, “And Jesus said to all, If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” These words spoken by Jesus were to the potential disciples thousands of years ago, and they are still relevant and active today. The same call that Jesus gave the people of His day is the very same call He gives us today…deny self, take up your cross, and follow. Our very nature as human beings is sin. A child does not have to be taught how to sin. Their instinct/nature is to sin. This is why the Apostle Paul wrote Ephesians 2:3, “We all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.” We are sinners by our nature. “For all have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God,” Romans 3:23. When Christ calls us to deny self, He is calling us to deny our sinful nature. Deny our sin, deny the urge to sin (temptation), deny sinful thoughts, deny our self. Then Jesus says to take up your cross. When Jesus said to take up your cross, He was foreshadowing His death on the cross as well as calling His disciples to identify completely with Him and His message, even if it meant death. Jesus calls us first to deny our sinful nature and then to identify completely with Him and His message. This takes humility. To deny self and one’s own

self-ambition in life takes total surrender; but Jesus does not simply leave us in a denial state, he calls us to identify with him. He changes us and gives us a new identity when and only when we deny ourselves and identify with him. Deny self, take-up your cross, and follow. How are we to completely identify with Christ and His message? By following. All three of Jesus’s requirements to be His disciple work together, and all three require humility. What does it mean to follow Jesus? 1 John 2:6, “Whoever says He abides in Jesus ought to walk in the same way in which He walked.” Following requires obedience, obedience to the call to live life the way Jesus lived. When we follow Jesus, we live for His glory, not our own (deny self ); we identify with his message, not our own (take-up your cross); and we simply live as He lived (follow). One keyword I want to point out in Luke 9:23, is “daily.” Being a follower of Christ requires a daily commitment to deny self to, identify with His message and purpose, and to follow Him. The Apostle Paul talks about our nature in Ephesians 2, and then he speaks of our change in the following verses, “For we (followers of Christ) are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” We as followers of Christ are His workmanship. Let us daily die to self and identify ourselves with Jesus.

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER MAY 7, 2015 The National Day of Prayer is an

annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. The NDP Task Force is a privately funded organization whose purpose is to encourage participation on the National Day of Prayer. It exists to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer, to create appropriate materials, and to mobilize the Christian community to intercede for America’s leaders and its families. The Task Force represents a Judeo Christian expression of the national observance, based on our understanding that this country was birthed in prayer and in reverence for the God of the Bible. Since the first call to prayer in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation, the call to prayer has continued through our history, including President Lincoln’s proclamation of a day of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer” in 1863. This year’s honorary chairman is Dr. Jack Graham, pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, TX. The follow

ing is the prayer, penned by Dr. Graham, which churches, other groups, and individuals are encouraged to pray on May 7th: “Heavenly Father, we come to You in the Name that is above every name—Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Our hearts cry out to You. Knowing that You are a prayeranswering, faithful God—the One we trust in times like these—we ask that You renew our spirits, revive our churches, and heal our land. We repent of our sins and ask for Your grace and power to save us. Hear our cry, oh God, and pour out Your Spirit upon us, that we may walk in obedience to Your Word. We are desperate for Your tender mercies. We are broken and humbled before You. Forgive us, and in the power of Your great love, lift us up to live in Your righteousness. We pray for our beloved nation. May we repent and return to You and be a light to the nations. And we pray for our leaders and ask that You give them wisdom and faith to follow You. Preserve and protect us, for You are our refuge and only hope. Deliver us from all fears except to fear You, and may we courageously stand in the Truth that sets us free. We pray with expectant faith and grateful hearts.

In Jesus’ name, our Savior. Amen.” www.nationaldayofprayer.org

Seven-Fourteen Prayer Ministry In preparation for the National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 7th, you are encouraged to be a part of the “Seven-Fourteen Prayer Ministry from March 7th to May 7th, simply by praying for at least 21 minutes each day. When you pray, focus in two directions. First: Praise and Thanksgiving for What He is Doing. Spend about 7 minutes

Second: Intercessory Prayers, Prayers for our church, our school, our community, our nation and leaders, and others that God brings to your mind and heart. Spend about 14 minutes. You may find that designating either 7:14 a.m. or 7:14 p.m. as your prayer time helps you to be faithful to pray.

Select the best time of day for you to spend in prayer with God and commit those 21 minutes to prayer. Can you imagine what God can do in our hearts and lives, in our church and schools, in our commuity and nation, if we obey 2 Chronicles 7:14?

Let’s Pray!

“If my people who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. - 2nd Chronicles 7:14
