A Monthly Newsletter of First Baptist Church

The How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony! (Psalm 133:1, HCSB)

Washington Baptist Association Annual Meeting The cooperation of Southern Baptist churches for Great Commission work has been one of the mainstays of our denomination. We are independent, autonomous local churches who have chosen, as led by the Holy Spirit, to come together to work globally through the Southern Baptist Convention, statewide through the Louisiana Baptist Convention, and locally through the Washington Baptist Association. Each level of cooperation is vital to fulfilling the Acts 1:8 Challenge to bear witness to Christ in our Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. I am so pleased our church has been selected to host our Annual Meeting of the WBA on Sunday night, October 4th at 5:30 p.m. This year’s Annual Meeting will be informative, worshipful, and inspiring. It will begin with a Ministry Missions Fair at 5:00 p.m. in our Family Life Center. There will be displays detailing different ministries within our Association and how churches can get involved. There will also be refreshments and a great time of fellowship. The Annual Meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. Worship will be led by the Seminarians

Mission India 2015 of the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. The sermon will be preached by Dr. Chuck Kelley, President of NOBTS. Dr. Kelley has a heart for evangelism and missions. Under his leadership, the seminary has reached out to the city of New Orleans, planting churches and reaching people for Christ. New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary has become one of the leading seminaries in preparing ministers for the Gospel ministry and the mission field. I look forward to being inspired and encouraged to greater service through Dr. Kelley’s message. It has been a blessing and a privilege to serve as the moderator for WBA for the past two years. I look forward to turning the gavel over to Bro. Chad Jenkins at the end of our Annual Meeting. He will serve as our moderator for the next year. Please make every effort to attend and encourage those from our sister churches to be in attendance as well.

You will find a prayer guide in The Bridge on Page 8 for the Darzi Muslim people of India. We have a team that will be working in India October 19th-31st, seeking to identify and engage Darzi Muslims and any others the Lord may put in their path with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The International Mission Board has identified the Darzi Muslims as an unreached, unengaged people group. We have only recently heard of the first Darzi to profess Jesus Christ.

Please pray for our team heading to India. We covet your prayers for safe travel, but our prayer should be for the Lord to be glorified in this nation of more than 1.2 billion people. Pray the light of Jesus Christ would shine brightly through the darkness of Hinduism and Islam. Pray for the approximately 5 million Darzi scattered through northern India, Pakistan, and Nepal. Pray they would turn to the Way, the Truth and the Life, Jesus Christ.

The first time I went on a mission trip to Honduras was in 2005. I remember the impression of seeing tin shanties scattered up a roadside hill. It seemed to me that the better off a person was, the higher they could live on the hill. I was moved by the sight of such poverty, and I prayed, “Lord, please give me Your passion and compassion for these people.” It’s a prayer that He has answered. I think the poverty of the country is one of the things that grips most of the team members that I take down to Honduras. We have so much here, and they have so little down there. Our poorest people in the U.S. have access to all kinds of aid from the government and various organizations, whereas the people of Honduras have virtually nothing at all. And sometimes this creates in us a desire to “fix” it all, to relieve the poor from their impoverished conditions, and leave them better off financially and physically than when we first arrived. There is a verse of Scripture that I adopted as our mission team theme verse: “But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.” (Matt. 9:36) Serving God by meeting physical or monetary needs is a noble thing, and I do believe that God is pleased with our efforts. Jesus said, “For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name, because you belong to Christ, assuredly I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.” (Mark 9:42). Physical and financial needs are visible, and meeting those needs makes us feel good because we see the improvement in people’s lives. But was meeting physical needs what moved Jesus’s heart with compassion? Actually no. He saw beyond their physical needs to their deepest

need, to know the Father as He knew the Father. That should be our motivation too. When we read the gospels of how Jesus traveled around, it may sometimes seem like He was just wandering about. But Jesus was purposeful in His travels. His ultimate goal was Jerusalem and the cross. He didn’t let things distract Him from that mission. The driving force behind His ministry was to do His Father’s will. Sure people were healed and restored along the way, but that was a side benefit of Jesus’s love for the Father and His desire to do His will. Oswald Chambers writes in My Utmost for His Highest (Sept. 23), “In the natural life our ambitions alter

life the goal is given at the beginning, the beginning and the end are the same, viz., our Lord Himself. We as we develop; in the Christian

start with Christ and we end with Him...The aim of the missionary is to do God’s will, not to be useful, not to win the heathen; he is useful and he does win the heathen, but that is not his aim. His aim is to do the will of his Lord...The disciple is not above his Master.” Many folks at FBC are active serving the Lord, and it’s wonderful to be around so many who do. If you’re one of those folks (wherever you are) then let me encourage you to keep on serving, but to always keep your focus beyond the immediate needs around you and focus on the glory of the Lord. But if you haven’t found your place of service, then let me encourage you to start today. Ask the Lord to show you His will for the people around you, then follow Him.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” These words were given to the disciples by Jesus right before He ascended to heaven to take His rightful seat next to the Father. He left the His disciples with a mission. The chances are that many of you have heard this passage preached numerous times as well as read it and studied it for yourself, but the truth of the passage as well as the application remains … GO. We are called, by Christ to “Go and make disciples …” This month a small group from our church will be leaving and going to India. While our mission team is in India, our number one goal is to “Go and make disciples.” This task of making disciples in a nation where only about 5% of the population are Christian will not be easy. This task is difficult on so many different levels, but thanks be to God for the promise He gives us, “and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Even though the task will not be easy, our God and Savior will be with us the entire time. Our team will be sharing the gospel with anyone willing to listen as well as reaching out specifically to the Darzi Muslim people group. The Darzi Muslim people group is considered to be unreached and unengaged by the International Mission Board. The Darzi consist of about 1.1 million Urdu-speaking Muslims scattered around India. How will a team of 5 from First Baptist Church in Franklinton Louisiana reach out to 1.1 million Urduspeaking Muslims scattered around India? Through the power of the Holy Spirit. This task of reaching the Darzi for Christ seems nearly impossible, but our

God does the impossible. Our God does the impossible! In a country with over 1.2 billion people with the vast majority being Hindu and Muslims, our God can bring about salvation in people’s lives. “How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless someone goes? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!’ God can do a mighty work among the people of India; our role is to be obedient to Him and take on the task to “Go and make disciples.”

How you can pray for the team going to India: 1. Pray for the people we will encounter that their hearts will be softened to the gospel. 2. Pray that the IMB no longer has to label the Darzi Muslim people group as unreached and unengaged, due to the fact that men and women who were dead in their trespasses have been made alive in Christ – our prayer is that salvation comes to the Darzi people. 3. Pray for the team’s obedience to Christ that even though the trip is difficult, we are obedient to follow the Holy Spirit’s leading in our lives. 4. Pray for safe travel to India, while we are in India, and coming back home from India. 5. Pray for our families who will be home while we will be in India.

“The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” – James 5:16

The dictionary defines “ambition” as “having a strong desire to achieve.” Therefore, an “ambitious” person would be one who wants to achieve the desired goal. “To achieve” is to “do what one sets out to do” or to complete a task or endeavor that one has begun. Most people think of ambition in the context of career or athletics or politics or some other realm where a person desires to excel and to be known as successful. Seemingly these days, too many have no more ambition than to make it through the week, get paid, spend what they’ve earned over the weekend, and then do it all over again…week after week, month after month, and year after year, with little thought as to what life is really all about. Others set their sights high but are aiming for what may seem a great achievement, but that will pass away with this life. As someone once wrote in a song, “Is that all there is?” Most folks chase the temporal while ignoring the eternal. Consider 2 Corinthians 5:9: “We have as our aim (or ambition)… to be well pleasing to Him.” The Apostle Paul’s perspective was one which focused beyond this world, saw everything through the lens of eternity, was motivated by love and gratitude for God, and was totally engulfed in the realization of what Jesus had done on the cross for all of humanity. In verse 14 of that same chapter he declares himself and the other disciples to be “compelled by the love of Christ,” not just because they had received that love but also because they were committed to announcing that love to the world. Jesus had given his life to all humanity (Romans 5:8); Paul and the first disciples had determined to do no less for Jesus. Like Paul, how could we desire any less than to be pleasing to the One Who shed his blood for us on the cross and before Whom we will one day stand at the judgment seat of Christ. However, while most of us would say that is our desire (or ambition), we find it difficult sometimes to live it out on a daily basis. My thoughts, my words, my behavior, my reaction to circumstances (good or not -so-good), my goals for life, my dreams and aspirations: are they pleasing to my Lord? Do I even care

or give a thought to whether they are pleasing to Him? Later in that same chapter of the Bible, we find the verse that was our memory verse a couple of weeks ago: “and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again (verse 15).” It’s very straight forward, don’t you think? There are those who live for Jesus, and there are those, too often among them professing Christians, who live for themselves. All of us, of course, have families and jobs and other responsibilities from day to day; but what is the underlying foundation and motivation for our approach to living life. Is it all for me, or the kids, or the grandkids, or whomever, or whatever? Or are we living our lives every day that God would be glorified by our lives, that Jesus’s character would be seen in us, and that someone might be persuaded toward Jesus as they see our approach to maximizing the potential of this one life with which we have been entrusted? Will we look back one day on a life of wasted years or one of the years invested in the Kingdom of God? The question might be asked in other ways: is your life wrapped up in the things of this world or Jesus? Do you live for personal success with a large measure of “what’s-in-it-for-me”, or is your desire for Jesus to be seen in and exalted through every aspect of your life? One caution: we are not just trying to be “good” Christians or “active” church members. Our motivation should not be so shallow. While involvement in and worshipping with one’s local church is very important, we are yearning every day for the shed blood of Jesus to be honored by the way we live our lives; and we are hungering to see others come to know our Savior. So, what is our ambition? If it is to please God rather than men or self, then let us release all of who we are to the Holy Spirit so that He can live the “Christ life” through us to the glory of God, the Father. The reward is a blessed life, and the retirement benefits are “out of this world!”

A new season is upon us, and as most of the rest of the country welcomes cooler weather, sweaters, and hot chocolate, we are just trying to survive the hot summer days that linger far longer than the calendar says they should. Even the grocery stores are making displays of pumpkins and colorful fall vegetables in 100Âş heat! Despite our unseasonably warm and humid weather, it is a season that causes us to reflect on abundance and thanksgiving.

Mark Your October Calendars for... Sunday, October 18th - Our Preschool Choir (PK3-Kindergarten), led by Mrs. Christina Watts, will share in our time of worship during the 6:00 p.m. evening service. They will practice beginning at 5:30 p.m. that afternoon in the Preschool Department. Please wear your blue or green Follower shirt and blue jeans or capris (no shorts, please). The Preschool Choir meets each Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Preschool Department.

In our Preschool and Children's Departments, especially since we have returned to school, we have been blessed with abundance (and I am so very thankful for it). On Wednesday nights, there are not many more beautiful sounds than the sound of chairs being dragged into the room because we have run out of seating. I count every child that fills each chair as a blessing from God. And I am so very thankful for the 11 other adults who join me in leading on Wednesday nights. But do not be mistaken that the goal of the Preschool and Children's Ministries is to run out of chairs. It is to pour the love of God and His Son Jesus into our children. A full calendar of activities at church for them may seem like an attempt just to give them things to do. I am so thankful to be at a church that understands that real change happens in the lives of children--change in their hearts that can change the world, opinions and ideas that will shape the decisions they make during their teenage years, decisions that they make that direct their paths and affect their eternity.

Saturday, October 24th - Our 4th, 5th, and 6th graders will be serving water at the Baptist Association Water Booth in the Commercial Building of the Washington Parish Free Fairgrounds from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 a.m. There will be two 45 minute shifts. The first shift will be from 11 a.m. until 11:45 a.m., and the second shift will be from 11:45 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Because there is limited space, I only have six spots per shift. There is a sign-up sheet on the FBC Kids bulletin board. It is not necessary for a parent to stay with the child during the shift, but it is necessary that a parent pick him up at the end of his shift. Children will NOT be dismissed to anyone besides a parent or guardian at the end of the shift unless prior arrangements are made with me. We will wear our blue or green Follower shirt.

So, is there a lot going on in the Preschool and Children's Ministry? YES! God is moving in the abundance of young lives that we have all been blessed with. Each activity that is scheduled is a time to pour into the next generation of moms and dads, business men and women, town leaders, church leaders, and missionaries...not because God is only interested in their future, but because we know that their lives are being shaped and used by God now. He loves us where we are and where we are going. Thank you for letting me be a part of their journey!

Children in the 4th - 6th Grades will be serving water in the

Baptist Association Water Booth in the Commercial Building on Sat (Oct 24th) of the Fair from

11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in 45 minute shifts.

See the FBC Kids bulletin board. (By the Coke Machine) to sign-up. It will be limited to the first 12 children (6 per shift).

The first month of the 20152016 year is in the books, and it was a wonderful one! So many new friends, so many new faces, so many blessings! It is our most sincere desire for our church family to join us in prayer over all of these new children. Each year I pray a very specific prayer over the children in PlaySchool. Each year, please join me as I pray that these children will receive an extra measure of compassion throughout their lives. Compassion allows us to show Christ's love as He would, and it can be radically culture-changing. So, in addition to praying for their health and well-being, for their families, and for their hearts to hide away the truths they learn during this year, please also pray that they would be a part of a generation whose compassion for others shapes the world that they will one day lead. In His Service, Mrs. Kelly, Mrs. Debbie & Mrs. Elizabeth Mrs. Sara & Mrs. Angela
