The Mysterious Church FREE, BUT NOT CHEAP! When Janice and I first arrived in Bogalusa in April seventeen years ago, the congregation said, “Wait until the week before the Washington Parish Free Fair. The whole parish moves to Franklinton. Not much happens anywhere else.” I listened and thought, “O.K. We had big fairs in South Florida with hundreds of thousands of people attending. I got this.” Then the week before the fair arrived. With one great whoosh, all the energy of Bogalusa went to the Washington Parish Fair Grounds for the grand Washington Parish Free Fair. I thought, “What is this? How can it be this way?” So we entered that first experience of the fair, and I came away a believer!
THE LORD’S SUPPER
Sunday, October 7th, in both morning worship services we will observe the Lord’s Supper, also known as Communion. In the long history of the church, the taking of the bread and the cup is the highest form of worship. When we observe Communion, we follow the instructions of Jesus when He said, “Do this in remembrance of Me.” He told us to DO THIS! This means it is not optional, something we can share in or skip. He told us to do this in REMEMBRANCE OF HIM. The focus of communion is not us, not our need or our blessing, but a time to remember Does this remind you of something the glory of Jesus poured out else that is also free but not cheap through the cross. When I say that is far greater than the fair? Welcome to the free gift of eternal “Please join us”, I almost feel as if life! Jesus paid the price in His I am offending the words of Jesus Through the years I have grown death and resurrection! Many of you are part of this heart and not of the world, give “legion of volunteers.” Thank you! thanks – and then spend your life opening the way for those around you to enter. If you have not said “yes” to the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ, the way is open. Today may be the day! The fair is, indeed, free – meaning there is no charge for entering. It is also “free of.” Free of the sale of alcohol, free of massive political activity, free of any official lewd or base programming. For this, too, I am grateful. The fair is free, but it is not cheap. Those who enter are not charged, but there is a massive cost in both dollars and work. For most of the people who enjoy the fair, someone else has paid for their experience. (I do realize that once inside the fair you can spend lots and lots of money – but you don’t have to.)

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” – Ephesians 2:8-10
I see these verses being played out in so many of the people within our church family. Consider the framework and flow of the Apostle Paul’s words in Ephesians. “For by grace you have been saved,” we come to know Jesus and are given eternal life not by anything we did or will do, but by His grace. The gift of salvation is made available for all because of the Gospel. When we come to know Jesus and receive His salvation, we are His “workmanship, created in Christ Jesus.” We have a new identity, for the old is gone, and the new has come. In this newness, that is only found in Jesus, we are “created in Christ Jesus for good works”. These “good works” God has prepared for us beforehand. These “good works” that God has prepared for us are given to us so that “we should walk in them.” Here is the overall flow of this passage: - We are saved through Jesus alone - We are declared His workmanship - We are created for good works - We are to walk in those good works
I see these verses being played out in so many of the people within our church family, and it’s a blessing to see and be a part of this ministry. A few weeks ago, I was blessed to see a group of men who are saved through Jesus and declared His workmanship, build several handicap ramps for a
family in need. Every Sunday and Wednesday are blessings to see people of all ages step up in various roles and serve within the body of Christ; these are real people who are saved through Jesus and who are walking in the good works that God prepared beforehand. Every week is a blessing to see so many people serving our community at the Food Bank; these are people whose identity is in Christ living out their workmanship. Every Tuesday is a blessing to hear about people taking seriously the call to be created for good works and reach out to people with hurts, habits, and hang-ups at Celebrate Recovery. My list of people who are walking in those good works could keep going and fill up this entire monthly newsletter. What about YOU? Where are YOU walking in those good works? As a child of God, declared His workmanship, are you walking in those good works that God prepared specifically for YOU beforehand? Our Nominating Committee is praying and working on the new church year’s committees. A person from that committee may call YOU, pray about it and seek guidance from the Lord. Even if the Nominating Committee doesn’t call, how will YOU walk in the gifts the Lord prepared for YOU? Seek the Lord … Serve the Lord Thanks for Reading,

Finding Balance Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Simon and his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!” Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” – Mark 1:35-38

It was the big game of the year. The stadium was full. As the football teams came onto the field, the crowd roared in anticipation. But one man was looking for a better seat from which to watch the game. As he studied the crowd, he saw one such seat beside an elderly lady. He asked her, “Ma’am, is that seat available?” to which she replied, “Yes, it is. It was my husband’s seat. We have enjoyed many games together through the years, but he passed away.” Feeling sympathy, he reacted, “Oh I’m so sorry. I didn’t know. But didn’t some of your family want to come and use his seat.” “No,” she answered, “They all went to the funeral.” It’s that time of year when all football fans come alive with zeal and excitement. Those who love football, really LOVE their football. But there are others who are overly fanatical about the game. Clearly, any of us can get out of balance when it comes to the things we love. Our Christian lives can get out of balance. Not that we love God more than we should, but we find it hard to balance our lives as a mom, wife, teacher, church member, civic person, soccer mom, etc., etc. Jesus was really busy with a lot of good things, but He demonstrated a balance in His life that we need. He ministered to crowds until He was exhausted, but then He found the time to rest and take His disciples to a place of retreat. He preached, taught, and healed among the crowds; but Mark 1 finds Him seeking a solitary place in which to pray and spend time in the presence of the Father. When we study the life of Jesus, we are better able to maintain a healthy balance in our lives:
We need to know our purpose in life. Jesus said, “For this purpose, I came.” He knew why He was on earth and could say “No” to lesser things so that He could be about the greater things of the Father that fulfilled His purpose. We must determine to please God rather than please others. Jesus had a commitment to the Father that empowered Him to say “No” to the crowds that wanted to control Him. Many times, we’re so busy pleasing others that we can’t please God. We should frame our day in prayer. Jesus who had all knowledge and power began His day in prayer. How much more should we begin our day with the Father? When we lose balance, we look like Martha. Jesus said that she was so worried and upset about many things that she couldn’t focus on the important things. She had lost balance and thus had lost her joy in the Lord. Maybe we would be better to emulate Mary who found joy in simplicity – simply sitting at the feet of Jesus. I pray this Fall season will find us discovering balance by sitting at the feet of Jesus and serving Him. Our October Adult 55+ Luncheon will be held in the Family Life Center on Friday, October 5th, at 10:30 a.m. The luncheon will feature “fair food” and our guest speaker will be Bro. Joe Baugh. Opportunities to serve the Lord include the Worship Service at Good Samaritan – Thursday, October 11th at 3:00 p.m. and Worship at Heritage Manor – Monday, October 15th at 3:00 p.m. Pray for our group that will leave for Pigeon Forge on Monday, October 29th. As of this writing, we have a couple of spots available if anyone is interested. This will be a great time of worship and fellowship in the Lord.
Happy Birthday to our
that. Jesus knew the secret and demonstrated it. As difficult as it was for Him, the Gospels recount many times when He departed from the crowds to be alone with His Father. You and I must do the same, though the battle to do so can be intense at times. Jesus went to the mountain, to the seashore, to the garden; we should find that place where we cannot only be reenergized but also grow deeper into a relationship with the Lover of our souls.

Let me begin by stating a recurring and obvious reality for active church-goers. We exit one very busy month and enter another one! Is there ever a time in the 21st century, western culture when almost everyone is not consumed with, and sometimes exhausted by, “busyness.” Among the church’s many activities is that hallowed time set aside for corporate worship. We should pray for and be in pursuit of those times, private and corporate, when our lives, often depleted of energy and motivation, encounter the Living God, the Exalted One, the Great Refresher of Souls. These are times when our spirit and the Holy Spirit unite together to push aside all the stuff of this life that crowds our minds, burdens our souls, and stifles our ability to live life the way our Father intended. If our “worship” is not renewing our awareness of His presence and refueling our desire to be with Him more, perhaps we should consider: why not? Consider Isaiah 40:31: “But those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Wow, what a promise. I don’t know about you, but I definitely need some of
On Tuesday, October 9th, our Senior Adult Choir will be traveling to First Baptist Church, Ponchatoula, to participate in a fellowship of senior choirs. Pray for us a safe trip to this unique event of worship and praise. Then comes the Washington Parish Fair and all that accompanies it, including our change of schedule on Wednesday evening and Sunday evening. On that Wednesday evening, you’ll want to join us at Mile Branch for singing at Half Moon Bluff Baptist Church as our men serve at the coffee booth and then later hear the Triumphant Quartet at the big stage. As always, we’ll be at the water booth on Saturday; and check the various programs for other opportunities to hear some good, gospel music. Our Sanctuary Choir and Children’s Choir have begun work on Christmas musical presentations. Adults, it’s not too late to join the choir and sing with us of the peace that is ours in the Christ of Christmas; and parents, I know that our dedicated leaders could use some help on Wednesday evenings to help your (and our!) kids prepare to celebrate the coming of our Lord. With all of this, there are the on-going gatherings for worship, Bible study, planning, and fellowship. Stay faithful, pray without ceasing, and walk humbly with your Lord. One last comment: Our Pastor Search Committee is now at work! Lift them to the Lord daily in prayer as they and we wait on the perfect will of our Father and the introduction of our next pastor. To God be the glory; great things He has done…and is doing!
SANCTUARY FUNDING COMMITTEE UPDATE & SANCTUARY DESIGN COMMITTEE REPORT If you were unable to be with us on Pledge Sunday or if you have not yet turned your Pledge Card in, please know that it is not too late. You may return your Pledge Card in the offering plate or to the church office. Pledge boxes are located in the foyer of the Sanctuary and on the Praying Hands table. Please continue to consider prayerfully how God would have you give.

If your child is not singing with us, they will need to remain with you until our classes begin at 6:00 pm. This is especially important with our Joyful Noise choir, as we have many children in attendance and quite a few that would prefer to chat with their friends instead of sing. Please help our 1-2 volunteers by explaining your expectations before they arrive. If you can host a spot (and we need 55 spot hosts), please sign up on the FBC Kids bulletin board by the Coke machine. We are planning for 250 children and would love to have a lot of our church family to greet them! If you aren’t familiar with the idea of Trunk-or-Treat, imagine the trunk of your car opened and decorated, perhaps how you would like your front door. If your trunk is like mine, you may prefer to use a pop-up tent and host a game underneath it! Trunk-or-Treat, by way of registering when you arrive, provides our Children’s ministry and our church with some excellent outreach and prayer opportunities. In addition to being an excellent outreach and prayer opportunity, FBC Trunk-or-Treat will also be encouraging attendees to bring a food donation to the Washington Parish Food Bank. They are critically low on canned vegetables so that we will be asking (but not requiring) Trunk-or-Treaters to bring one to two cans of vegetables of any kind as a donation. My prayer is that this special event draws in many and that each child that attends will walk away with more than a bag of candy, but with a tangible encounter with the love of Christ.

WASHINGTON PARISH FOOD BANK UPDATE Do not grow weary in doing good. ~ 2 Thessalonians 3:13 Because of the amount of food needed each month for our families, I thought I would give you a breakdown of how this applies to a recent food drive done for us by Bowling Green School. Emily Phelps asked me about doing a food drive at Bowling Green to benefit the food bank. Of course, I was thrilled. In fact, I think I hugged her on the spot. We have been having so much trouble getting enough food each month. What we can order from Second Harvest continues to be greatly reduced, and we still have not been able to get an explanation as to why. Other food resources are really needed right now.
the eight shopping days. The Bowling Green collection of vegetables provided for 4 ½ days, or 225 families. The other 25%, or 40 cases, of tomato products, fruit, and soup provided for almost four days, or about 200 families. This means that about half of one month of four categories of food items were provided by one food drive.
Thank you to Principal Beverly Young for allowing the food drive, to Emily for all her hard work, and to the Bowling Green teachers, students, and their parents who helped to make the drive a huge success. Be reminded, however, that the need for food continues every Emily did an awesome job week. Food drives can make a organizing the drive, and over big difference.
