SLC WRAP UP By Kyra Rose

Blanca Antolin

"FBLA's SLC was an amazing experience!"

Were you at Texas FBLA's State Leadership Conference? No? Well here is what went down. On Thursday, March 7th welcome day commenced. Chapters from schools all over Texas began to arrive at the hotel. I was an exciting time to be alive. Later that night seniors were able to socialize and network to the senior social. It was an amazing opportunity that I was glad I took advantage of. The last event of the night, and the most exciting, was opening ceremony. The ceremony was full of fun music and awards! The next day and everyone's favorite, was competition day. Although the day is stressful, there were many activities to soothe some of it, including exhibition booths and informational workshops. The last day (**tear**) was the award ceremony. The morning brought on feelings of accomplishment and happiness. Congratulations to all of our Texas winner moving on to nationals! On behalf of all the former officer, I want to tank everyone who attended SLC! We worked very hard to organize everything for you guys. Hope you loved it! See you at nationals!

REVIEWS

BLANCA ANTOLIN The thrill and excitement was inevitable for students who qualified to attend this years Texas FBLA State Leadership Conference in “space city”, Houston, Texas. MPHS’s Erica Salazar, says she “participated in the digital video production” event. Salazar speaks about her “unforgettable experience” she states, “The speaker at the State Leadership Conference made [her] realize that [she] wants to worry about what [she] can do now to further [her] education and career. Whilst competing in [her] event [she] also learned about how vital it is to give back to others who are less fortunate” As she competed this year in digital video production her topic about Giving Tuesday enabled her teammates and self to branch out to her community by becoming more aware of her surroundings. I asked Salazar what was her favorite thing that occurred while in Houston, she says it “was getting to listen to speakers and what they had to say as well as exploring the city of Houston with friends.” Finally, Salazar explains that the most interesting thing she found at the SLC was “the amount of ark work there was in Downtown Houston and how many professional people there were around the city which made [her] reason how one day [she] could be just like them.” Though Salazar, did not advance to the National Leadership Conference she is “happy for everyone who will be attending!” FBLA will be hosting their annual National Leadership Conference in San Antonio, Texas starting June 29th through July 2nd. Hope to see you there!

NORA EL SHERIF From influential workshops to exceptional ceremonies, this year’s Texas State Leadership Conference was full of refreshing experiences! By far, my favorite part of the SLC was the keynote speaker, and this year’s speaker completely blew me away. Chris was incredibly memorable, and his stories genuinely inspired me, leaving me as a changed person at heart. His mindset struck deep within me and allowed me to view the world from a different perspective. He helped us realize that by envisioning the impact one can have on their community, it makes changing the world much more tangible. Finally, I enjoyed helping my fellow officer campaign for State ReporterHistorian. Being a voting delegate, I was able to experience the complexity of the voting process as well as the caucus that came before it. Overall, it was quite an enlightening experience.

ANGELA LOPEZ The 2019 state competition was my very first state competition for fbla ever. It began with a trip from the city of El Paso to the beautiful city of Houston. We were able to stay at a nice hotel in the city which made the trip feel like home. Once at the hotel and attending workshops and opening ceremonies I got to see all the different students from all over Texas. All with different perspectives and knowledge. I was excited to be able to interact with some of them as we went up in the elevator. This interaction here and there gave me a different perspective in Fbla. I got to learn a lot from all the speakers, competitors and judges that helped me better myself for future competitions and to bring a little something home for my chapter. I could say that to be my very first SLC it was extraordinary full of learning and fun experiences.

events. Then we followed up to have some fun activities. Fbla fundraiser to attend the fall National leadership conference at Albuquerque New Mexico where the Fbla members learned a lot of ideas to bring back to our chapter and shared friendships with other chapters. We began to have our small socials which the first one was the Halloween social where we watched spooky movies and had some snacks. This social was meant to give back to our chapter and to bond with one another. After this the hard work began for our city Fbla competition where we had workshops for anyone that wanted some help with their project. And lastly we had our State leadership Conference where the hard work paid of and the outcome came out to 10 qualifying national competitors. From this whole year of fun adventures with my valle verde Fbla chapter I got to see some awesome thing I’ll like to keep for next year but also some things I would like to implement. For example I would like to implement community service within our Fbla chapter so we can learn as leaders to give back to our community. I am very thankful for this 2018-2019 Valle Verde Echs Fbla chapter. THE TEXAN | 4

VOLUNTEERING WITH...

CINCO RANCH HS By Alice Liang Photographs by Alice Liang Volunteering. Each second we devote towards volunteering not only has the potential to make a difference in our community but make a difference in ourselves as well. As cheesy as it sounds, the influence we can bring to society simply by donating our time is phenomenal, and it’s an even better feeling when you witness the impact of your work. And sometimes you especially feel it if you are assigned a laborious task like moving dozens of crates of canned food because you’ll be sore for the next half week or so. But honestly, it’s so worth it to know you’re helping so many people. Throughout my three years in FBLA, event after event, I have been fortunate enough to feel this satisfaction, and it has left an everlasting impression upon me. Personally, the most memorable volunteering events would be assisting in local races and where I’ve met others not just involved with FBLA but with different organizations as well. Each year our chapter partakes in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and Turkey Dash, both of which are events to help fundraise towards improving the community. Facilitating the success of these functions have not only educated me about the world we live in but have generated a sense of appreciation within myself for the efforts that are dedicated towards the betterment of our people. I’ve had the opportunity to form closer bonds with members in my own chapter and even establish connections with other chapters while working towards a common goal. This is why I keep signing up to volunteer, as the memories created and experience received is often intangible elsewhere. As well, I wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity of taking photos for my lovely chapter members and getting free food (often bananas - lots of them) and other random items (including, but not limited to, shirts, stickers, bubbles, and the occasional cowbell) during the event. In regards to Cinco Ranch specifically, we were so inspired by these races that we decided to host our own last year after witnessing the detrimental effects of Hurricane Harvey on our community. We called it “Color for a Cause”, and it was a fun color run (wow, look at that rhyming) to raise money for the Arc of Katy, a local organization which provides opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, whos facility was flooded earlier that fall. After months of planning, preparation, and discovering the potential of rain on race day to be likely just days before the event, (fortunately, it didn’t) the color run was a huge success. We had hundreds of participants, whether they were runners, volunteers, or sponsors, and raised over $6000 for the Arc of Katy. It was a happy ending to the story, and the impact we made on our community left an everlasting impression on us. To continue this legacy, we’re holding Color for a Cause once again this year (you can visit our website at www.colorforacause.weebly.com). The influence of volunteering at these races not only challenged our members to make a difference in our community but inspired our chapter to take action as well.

How to write a Resume The truth behind impressing future employers

BY: ELENA GIL

Many jobs, internships, scholarships, and college applications require a resume. Often, a resume is the first thing the selection committee will look at. For this reason, your resume is important, but don't worry here are some tips to make your resume the best. The easiest way to make a resume is to start with a template. Microsoft word and Google Docs have customizable templates with many sections to insert your own information. The sections you should have are header, education, work experience, and extracurricular activities. Awards, honors, and skills are optional.

The header of your resume should include your full name and your contact information, such as: phone number, home address, and email. Make sure your name is large and easy to see. The education portion should include the name of your high school, your expected date of graduation, and your GPA. The work experience section can be taken a couple of ways. For each job you've had, include the company or employer, your position, the dates you worked there, and your responsibilities. If you have not worked, then you can replace this section with volunteer work.

The extracurricular activities section of your resume is going to be where selection committees will get the best look at who you are as an individual and as a student. Here is where you should pay the most attention to and include every activity you have been involved in since your freshman year. Although the awards and honors and skills sections are optional, the can highlight important accomplishments that you want selection committees to be aware of. In this section you may include FBLA or other school awards you have received. In skills make sure you include any bilingualism or computer programing skills. I hope that these tips will help you build a resume that will show any selection committee all your accomplishments and that it will help you land any job, internship, or get into a college that you desire!

DID YOU KNOW? On average, each corporate job offer attracts 250 resumes,. Of those candidates, 4 to 6 will get called back for an interview, and only one will get the job. SOURCE: ZETY.COM

The Global Day of Giving GIVING TUESDAY

By Blanca Antolin

Giving Tuesday is the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to reach out to our communities and kick off the charitable season. This day is fueled through the power of social media and collaboration. This year, Mount Pleasant High School’s (MPHS) FBLA chapter decided to partner with local charity, Grace Case. Grace case is a non-profit organization that allocates resources such as school supplies, comfort and toiletry items to children in the CASA program, or foster care system. Our chapter’s Digital Video Production competing team created an inspiring video explaining how FBLA is impacting our communities starting with one at a time. The Texan | 7

FROM THE FORMER OFFICER TEAM...

FAREWELL TEXAS FBLA! AREA 1 VP

AREA 2 VP Thank you so much for the past 5 years. These experiences and memories are invaluable. Although my time as a member and a state officer has come to an end, I will forever be indebted to this organization for making me who I am today. I hope every single member in the state of Texas is able to immerse themselves in every single opportunity that is presented. Lead in FBLA with an open mind and full heart, I promise it will be the best decision you’ve made. I hope you will encounter amazing people and learn so many valuable

imagine. I’ve learned so many new and life progressing things. You’ve taught me what it means to be ethical in a business environment. To my state officer team, I love you all so much. You all will never leave my heart and the vast memories that we made will be stuck deep in my heart and soul forever. To Mrs. Crook and Mrs. Matlock, I couldn’t have asked for better mentors and this long but very short journey. You guys are the definition of hard working, both of you did so much for me and our team and I couldn’t thank you enough times. I love y’all. To my parents, thanks for putting up with me and all the crazy, busy things I do. To my advisor, thank you, for being a mother away from home, a true leader in the minds of a young generation and most of

ELENA GIL

From my first SLC in San Antonio, I knew that I has fallen in love with that amazing organization and the people in it. Thank you so much for allowing me to meet such wonderful people, travel to amazing places, and experience the great career and skill building opportunities that FBLA has to offer. My high school experience would not have been nearly as busy, rewarding, and especially fun without FBLA. Although my time in FBLA has come to an end, for many of you, it is either just the beginning or you at least still have a year or two left. with that in mind, I have a few pieces of advice. First, take advantage of every opportunity that is placed in front of you. Whether this is meeting a guest speaker at one of your chapter meetings or running for an officer position in your chapter, area, or for the state, be sure to take the opportunity. Even if you think you may not succeed or that it isn't worth it, every opportunity that is presented to you through FBLA has the potential to be a pivotal moment.

This brings me to my second piece of advice: don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Although doing a speaking event or running for an officer position may seem intimidating, these are both extremely rewarding experiences that can provide you with valuable skills for college and the workplace. And lastly, don't forget to have fun! Competitive events and the stress of SLC can seem daunting and at times is very serious, but going to conferences and being a part of this amazing organization is also lots of fun! Take advantage of making new friendships and and getting to experience new places! My Texas FBLA experience is now behind me, but the memories and friendships I've made will last a lifetime. Thank you FBLA for an incredible journey that I will cherish forever.

all, one of my very best friends. Thank you Texas FBLA, thank you so much for all the memories. Keep up the good work and never forget where you came from! The Texan | Issue 3 | Page 8

AREA 4 VP

AREA 5 VP From my first conference to our final SLC, FBLA has been one of the highlights of my time in high school. Being a part of this year’s State action team has shown me the power of amazing organization. I have been able to grow and thrive with Texas FBLA, and I will never forget all that I have been able to accomplish. I want to thank my fellow state officers because each of you have helped me become a stronger leader and better person. I will forever cherish the time we spent together. I want to thank my advisers for mentoring me throughout this wild ride, and my chapter for standing behind me and supporting me at every step.

school, I have grown to be someone who I would have never imagined to be. That boy who said, "I do," at my induction ceremony changed throughout this year. The people around me have guided me to success. FBLA isn't just an organization that prepares me for the future now is it jus an organization that allows me to network, but it is an organization that provides me with a family. My farewell to you all is quite different from those leaving for good from our astounding family, because I'll be back next year leading our state towards success in everything we do as your 2019-2020 state president. To those who are leaving, thank you, and to those who are coming

MATTHEW ARMSTRONG

My time to say goodbye has come. From 10th grade until now, you have been my home away from home. From San Antonio to Dallas to Houston, each conference has molded me into a better leader than I was before. Leaving this organization has been the hardest goodbye, but all good things must come to an end. Walking into my first meeting, I did not think this was an organization that would adequately represent me. I joint hesitantly, and quickly realized how much more their was to offer than just business events. I found my niche, and excelled. From competing in a presentation event to a test, I learned what my strong suits were and where my weaknesses resided.

In three short years, FBLA taught me how to be a leader, how to care for others, and how to set goals and achieve them. FBLA has taught me so much more than just how to compete and win awards. Joining was the greatest decision I have made throughout my time in high school, and I wish I would have done it sooner. The members have empowered me to become a leader, and my fellow officers have pushed me to achieve things I never thought possible This year would

Board of Directors, our State Advisor, State Officer Coordinator, and parents. I cannot thank each of them enough for entrusting us to lead this esteemed organization over the past year. Texas FBLA, it is time that we say our final goodbye. You have taught me so much, and I cherish every memory that came from out time together. I hope others find the success I found within this organization. Thank you for taking me in and molding me into the person I am today. The Texan | Issue 3 | Page 9

PARIMENTARIAN

ISABEL CHAPA

Words cannot even begin to express how much gratitude I feel for FBLA. This organization is beyond ordinary. It changes you into a person beyond imaginable. This organization changes every member into the extraordinary. This past year I was given the opportunity to serve as your Texas state Parliamentarian. This whole experience was lifechanging. FBLA has provided me with an amazing group of individuals to work along side for the year. We all become close and watched each other grow. From officer training all the way to SLC, the few times spent together were cherished down to the second. I can't wait to see all my fellow officers' accomplishments for the years to come. Thank you FBLA for granting me the pleasure to serve as the 2018-2019 Texas state Parliamentarian. Besides the amazing experience of serving on the Texas state action team, FBLA helped me grow as a person.

I never thought for a second that I would be capable of talking to a group of 10 students let alone 2000 people. FBLA has built confidence and strength into the young timid freshman and now I am proud to be who I am today. FBLA has prepared me for the world ahead wherever it takes me. FBLA is amazing nd it pains me to say goodbye. I hope y'all can get the same from FBLA as I have. Thank you again!

years in this organization have been a blast and I wish I didn't have to say goodbye. All the lessons I've learned, memories I've made, and bonds I've created will forever stay with me. To my fellow seniors: good luck on the next step of your life, whatever it may be, I wish you all the best. To everyone else: stick with FBLA. It has so much to offer its members and it's an amazing experience to be a part of. Finally, from none other than the wise Dr. Seuss, "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." Thank you all!

KYRA ROSE

This is it! This year has been a rollercoaster, with many high and many lows, but it is one I would never stop riding. First I would like to thank Ms. Crook, Ms. Matlock, and Ms. Clayton. Together, they have mad me into the officer I am today. Over this year I have learned so much from them that not only helped me grow as a officer, but will help me grow as a person as well. Ms. Turner - Gray where do I begin. You are my supporter, my friend, and my confidant. Without you I would have not achieved nor attempted half of what I have. I will sorely miss you when I graduate high school and have no doubt that I am leaving my sister in great hands. I cannot thank you enough for all you have done for me. To my family, my main support system, Thank you! you guys never fail to provide me guidance and endless love as I do the things that make me happy. You guys always have my back, even when I fail. Thank you. Finally, to Texas FBLA thank you. You guys have truly made this year the best. I was driven to be the best officer I could be for you guys' sake. I'm leaving you guys in the hands of yet another amazing officer team. Good Luck! I love this organization and I'm torn to be leaving it, but now it's time for college. Wish me Luck!

SECRETARY I joined FBLA as an eager freshman, just looking to make some friends and learn more about the business world. Little did I know how much this organization would come to mean to me. Over the past four years, FBLA has become my family. From my local officer team at Seven Lakes to the Texas State Action Team, I have created a plethora of laughter-filled memories, and I will always cherish them deeply. Through the late nights planning events, the debates over how to accomplish our goals, and the frantic mornings rushing to get things done, work with them didn’t feel like work, and if I had the chance, I’d do it all over again. Additionally, FBLA has pushed me to grow in ways like no other. I’m no longer the freshman who turned red from just reciting the pledge at a chapter meeting. Now, I can speak in front of thousands of people (although I still get nervous, I can hide it a little better now)! All jokes aside, I’ve branched out to meet people from all over the state, the nation, the world, and my life has become so much more meaningful because of the people in it. I’ve developed assurance in who I am as a leader and as a person, and because of FBLA, I’m ready for

ALICE WANG

whatever the future throws at me.

I knew this day was coming, but I still never thought it actually would. If I have one thing to say, it’s this: put effort into everything you do, and make the most of your time in FBLA. Challenge yourself to take different events, explore the cities you travel to, and talk to new people wherever you go, trust me, the outcomes are worth it. In FBLA, I’ve found myself and my family, and I hope you do the same. Texas FBLA, thank you for everything. It has truly been an honor serving as your 2018-2019 Secretary.

PRESIDENT

QUYEN NGUYEN

With a few months left in high school, I am left to reflect on the past four years. I’ll be the first to admit that I hate cliché’s and it may be due to memory loss, but it has truly felt like high school has gone by in the blink of an eye, with the days and weeks all blending together in an indistinct jumble of memories. But the experiences that stick out to me most, and I hope to hold onto forever are the experiences I have had with FBLA. FBLA, I can say without a doubt in my mind, has been the pinnacle of my high school experience.

I couldn’t have travelled to the places I fell in love with, met the amazing people that I have the pleasure to know, learned the essential business knowledge that I will carry with me into my career, and attained the leadership skills that have built the confidence I have today, without this organization. To all of those who allowed me to serve: thank you from the bottom of my heart, for entrusting in me to lead Texas FBLA, and to those who still have time left in this organization, take advantage of every moment and seize every opportunity, because before long, you’ll be looking back, like me on one of the greatest adventures of your life. Goodbye Texas FBLA, I love you and will miss you from the bottom of my heart. The Texan | Issue 3 | Page 11
