editor's note Hey Texas FBLA! My name is Lynn Nie and I will be the one composing this year's The Texan. I am extremely excited to be issuing my first issue this month and to share the amazing things that have happened around the state.
A lot has happened this year and it may feel overwhelming and surreal, but Texas FBLA as a community can band together to stand strong. Even though we were unable to host a State Leadership Conference this past March, many still competed and I am very proud of everyone's hard work!
Even though this year's events were unprecedented, I hope we can all keep our vigor and make this year the best that we can. With new challenges and obstacles coming our way, it also provides new opportunities for everyone to learn and grow from. This year will take some time to adjust to how everything is now, but we can all help one another and persevere through it together.
From this edition of The Texan, I hope there is something in here for you whether that be comfort, closure, or inspiration. Thank you for spending your time to read this issue and I hope to see y'all soon!
Happy reading,
Lynn Nie

mpvp's letter Hello Texas FBLA! My name is Kaylie Reese, and I am excited to be serving as the 2020-21 Mountain Plains Region Vice President. As a senior growing up in the small town of Wellsville, Kansas, my education has played a major factor in my life. Each year has had its own challenges, but this one will probably be the most “interesting”. However, if we all continue to lead and look at the positives that are still going on around us, we can ASPIRE to still make a difference as Future Business Leaders. As your Vice President, I would like to welcome each of you to this new membership year. The National Officer Team is ready to work together to develop each one of our members, while still making this a memorable experience. It is our goal to provide the tools necessary for Texas FBLA and our members to succeed. The National Officer Team will be continuing programs that have been previously established, as well as implementing new ideas and resources to benefit both members and advisers. As for the Mountain Plains Region, with the help of my council, I plan to increase our communication and social media presence by establishing a Mountain Plains Region Instagram account. For more personal communication, I will send out monthly emails to state advisers and officers to keep them up-to-date on information pertaining to the national level. Texas FBLA members—Continue your efforts to improve yourselves and your chapter, because it does not go unnoticed. My challenge to you: d ecide upon your ASPIRE statement. What is something you ASPIRE to do within this school year? There will be many obstacles that lie ahead but strive to turn those obstacles into accomplishments. Please feel free to reach out to me anytime this year via email (fblampvp@fbla.org) or Instagram (@fblampvp).
Sincerely,
Kaylie Reese MOUNTAINS PLAINS REGION VICE PRESIDENT FBLAMPVP@FBLA.ORG

A FINAL FAREWELL SOME GOODBYE MESSAGES FROM A FEW OF THE 2019-2020 TEXAS STATE OFFICERS
president's farewell It is rather strange to be offering a farewell after you have left with the transfer of power complete. Yet, it is incredible because you have the unique opportunity to take a step back and reflect. As many of y'all do not know, we film our farewells well in advance of the State Leadership Conference (SLC), so we have said our farewells, but it was never broadcasted at SLC. The state officers were available to access our own and we all set aside a night and watched them together in the confines of our Zoom box. That Zoom meeting really exemplified what is best about this organization: the people. If you asked me a couple of months before March, I would have said that the traveling and educational opportunities would probably be the best. However, my two years as a state officer has continually shown that the people of this great organization are what's best. It is likely that I will never see my fellow ex-state officers again, which made the pandemic allthe-more devastating. It would have been my first SLC where I open the conference. It would have been first SLC to win first place in my event. What I find more saddening is the "lasts." It would have been my last SLC ever to attend as a student. It would have been my last time to see my state officer team. It would have been my last event as a member of my school's chapter. We all experienced moments of sadness because we lost the ability to do something this year, but we must never forget that the main reason why Future Business Leaders of America is great: the people.

reporter-historian's farewell F is for friends that do stuff together~ U is for you and meee~ N is for anywhere and anytime at all~ Here in the FBLA sea~ Though we didn’t quite reach the sea part this year (R.I.P. Galveston :’) ), FBLA, you’ve been one heck of a journey to embark on to say the least. Like how Patrick loves his rock, Sandy loves her karate, and Mr. Krabs loves his money, if I was Spongebob, you’d be the pineapple house. Because you are something I couldn’t have imagined my life without. Of course, there was the occasional Krabby Patty that didn’t live up to expectations. With each episode, the theme song seemed more and more repetitive, and as time passed, I got bored of chasing all the jellyfish swimming around. But despite this, you provided me a fun place where I could learn and grow. You gave me guidance on navigating the ocean waters and one of the best ever families to be a part of. From day one, the moments I experienced and people I’ve met are some that I’ll cherish for a lifetime, and for this, I remain forever grateful. I hope that in the future, when Plankton is finished with his shenanigans, we can somehow go one last adventure together, but for now, I wish you all the luck in searching for that secret formula.
SEA you soon,

area 4 vp's farewell Well Texas FBLA, the 2019-2020 year has come to an end, and with it my term serving as your Area 4 Vice President. This year has brought me so many memories and happiness that I will hold with me forever. This year was my first year serving on the Texas State Area team. Not only did I meet wonderful people, but I also gained useful skills. My state officer team, my friends, and my forever FBLA family gave me laughs and brought me to tears as the time came closer and closer to say goodbye. The entire year we bonded and became closer. I will forever hold our time together in my heart and remember all the good times we spent with each other. FBLA has taught me so many things from public speaking to networking. All those things I will use in aspects of my personal life and work life. Who knew that such a fun club could teach someone such important skills. Well I didn’t at first and now I’m a better person for what I have learned. FBLA has filled me with memories for a lifetime. And no, I’m not just talking about my time as a state officer, but also my time as a regular member. The trips to SLC and NLC was filled with fun adventures that I got to experience with my local chapter. Experiencing the new cities and experiences is something I could’ve never dreamed of. And looking back at the photos now, all I can do is smile at the memories. Even though we didn’t have an SLC, and I didn’t get to say goodbye in the traditional way, I'm so thankful for this opportunity and couldn't have asked for anything more. Thank you Texas FBLA for bringing me happiness, memories, skills, and smiles. You are forever in my heart. This is goodbye from your former Area 4 Vice President, Amina Rose. Goodbye!

area 5 vp's farewell Dear Texas FBLA, Who wrote the book on goodbye? SLC was supposed to happen. We would all be on stage one last time saying our final goodbyes. I can not thank my state officer team enough and what FBLA has given to me all these years in high school. It has truly been a blessing and pleasure to have served this past year as your Area 5 Vice President, and through all the stressful nights, frustrating conferences, and late night shenanigans, I would not trade it for anything else in the world. Area 5, you have inspired me to become more than what I am today, and for that I will forever be grateful. When I look back at it, I will miss the experiences and my state officer team very much. While I know that this is not the ending anyone expected, I am proud to have been given the opportunity to represent such an amazing region. Best of luck to you all this year, and may Area 5 continue to show its unparalleled excellence in the state of Texas.
Until next time, FBLA!

area 7 vp's farewell Although this is not the end for me, it is for some of the most incredible people I’ve ever met. I would like to thank all of my fellow officers for the great experiences we’ve shared that have shaped me into a better me, and for just being my friends.
I thank Mrs. Crook, Mrs. Matlock, and Mrs. Clayton for teaching me things I couldn’t have learned anywhere else. And I thank my friends and family who have supported me along the way.
As for what’s ahead, I look forward to embarking on an amazing journey through my next two years.
This organization has done so much for me in just my first two and I trust that the next won’t cease to blow me away. See you soon FBLA!

SECRETARY Lisa Liu Hi Texas FBLA! My name is Lisa Liu. I’m a senior at Cinco Ranch High School in Katy, TX. I’ve been a member and officer of my local chapter of FBLA for three years, and it is my honor to be apart of and serve on the State Officer Team. Little did I know when I joined FBLA in freshman year that FBLA would shape my high school life so dramatically. FBLA has provided my with numerous opportunities to find confidence in myself and put my energy and time to good use. I’ve learned so many lessons in FBLA, not only business related ones, but lessons in working effectively as a team and proper communication, skills that are vital in the professional world. Through FBLA, I have also met so many ambitious, kind, and hardworking people who inspire me to be the best I can be. Many of who I have become best friends with. This year, I hope to give members the same experience as a state officer. I look forward to working with the state action team this year. Please feel free to contact me about any questions; I’d be more than happy to help.

PARLIAMENTARIAN Kharma Haltom Hi Texas FBLA! Hi! My name is Kharma Haltom and I am your 2020-2021 Texas FBLA Parliamentarian. I have been involved with FBLA since freshman year, and it has already been such a surreal experience. Since I go to a small school, it’s really great to be involved in such a highly populated organization. I got into FBLA after hearing about the various national trips; however, I stayed for the amazing leadership and growth opportunities that FBLA has to offer. Competing at local, state and national levels and running for area and state officer positions has definitely helped me grow into who I am today. I am also involved in other extracurriculars such as FFA where I serve as the McGee Bend District Reporter, Leo Club, National Honor Society, softball, and cross country. I love all of these organizations and sports very much as they take up most of time along with FBLA. I can’t wait for the upcoming year and to serve you as your state parliamentarian! If you have any questions or just want to chat, feel free to contact me and I will be happy to help.

REPORTER-HISTORIAN Lynn Nie Hey Texas FBLA! My name is Lynn Nie and I’m so excited to serve as y'all's reporter-historian this year! FBLA has shaped my life and with the State Action Team, and I hope to make this year the best one yet! I got into FBLA my freshman year since some of my other friends had joined and it was one of my best decisions. Being able to compete and meet new people made me realize that I wanted to invest more of my time into this organization. I got to serve as a National Social Media Ambassador for the 2019-2020 year and got to work along with so many talented and passionate people across the nation. In addition to FBLA, I’m also involved with Key Club, SOAR, and National Honor Society. During my free time, I enjoy going on spontaneous trips with friends, listening to music, traveling to new places, and baking. I also make a ton of puns, dad jokes, and doodle cats whenever possible. Please do not hesitate to contact me whether they’re questions, concerns, or just wanting to say hi! I am more than happy to be of assistance in any way.

I have been doing FBLA since my sophomore year, and this will be my third year. AREA 2 VP Alexander Rodriguez Greetings Texas FBLA! My name is Alex Rodriguez and I will be serving as your Area 2 Vice President during the 2020-2021 year. Currently I am a senior at the heart of Area 2, Eastwood High School, and I've been in FBLA for three years. My sophomore year I held the office of Vice President and my Junior year I served as President. I'm also involved in Speech and Debate, National Honor Society, and I work at an insurance company part-time. My goal for this year as Area 2 Vice President is to hopefully spread the overwhelming success my local chapter has experienced throughout the Area via a three-part plan of expansion, enrichment, and unification. I strongly believe Area 2 can realize its destiny of becoming a true state powerhouse by improving in those three areas. Despite the challenges we will face this year, there is no reason why Area 2 cannot excel in any goals we may set for ourselves. It is up to us to persevere in the midst of these unique circumstances. I fully commit myself to being as helpful and proactive throughout this year as possible, and I urge anyone with questions or concerns to shoot me an email or contact the Area social media accounts. This is going to be a big year for Area 2, and I can't wait to see all we'll accomplish in the coming months.

AREA 3 VP Grayson Harris Hello Texas FBLA members! My name is Grayson Harris and I am thrilled to be serving as your 2020-2021 Area 3 State Vice President. This will be my fourth year in FBLA and my senior year at San Marcos High School. The State Action Team have exciting and new plans in place for this upcoming year. FBLA entered my life my freshman year. I was blessed to have been recruited by an upperclassman friend promising fun trips and competitions. At first, it was hard to come out of my comfort zone and speak up at even the local events. It was an exhilarating feeling when I finally gained the courage to speak up and have my voice heard. FBLA is an amazing organization that gives students the tools necessary to step out of their comfort zone and flourish. If you had told me four years ago that I would be in the position I am now, I would have laughed in your face. It was due to FBLA that I have met so many wonderful people, been to amazing places, and made memories that will last a lifetime. Outside of FBLA, I am a kayak instructor on the San Marcos River and treasurer of Leo's Club. I am also a member in Junior State of America, Robotics, and the Student Council. In my free time I love to be on the river, play with my dogs, hike, be with my family, listen to music, and be in nature. I look forward to a year of success for Texas FBLA and let's have a great year full of growth!

AREA 4 VP Amina Rose Hi Texas FBLA!
My name is Amina Rose and I’m your Area 4 VP, again! I’m very excited to serve as your Area 4 VP for my second year and can’t wait to see what this year brings. I got started in FBLA because my sister told me about the club and said I should join it. During my freshman year of high school, I was just a member of FBLA. But then in my sophomore year of high school I became my local chapter’s Historian. That position of power is what led me to run for Area 4 Vice President in my junior year, and I was so happy to be elected. And now in my senior and final year in high school, I’m blessed to be serving the amazing people of FBLA again and couldn’t be happier. FBLA isn’t the only club involved in. I’m also involved in Key Club, HOSA, and DoSomething. Outside of school, I’m a member of a club called Jack and Jill of America. Not only was I a member in all these clubs, but I have held leadership positions like: historian, member-at-large, editor, and co-president. These past experiences will help be the best Area 4 Vice President that I can be for you.I also play the piano. I’ve been playing the piano for nine years and still continuing. I want to continue my learning all the way into college. I started playing because I wanted to learn how to play the Keytar, but ended up sticking to the classical piano instrument. I love to play all genres of music, but mostly play classical.I’m a very hard-working, ambitious person who can’t wait to make this year amazing and special, and serve as your Area 4 VP.

AREA 5 VP Tabina Hassan Hi Texas FBLA! My name is Tabina Hassan and I am serving as your Area 5 Vice President for the 2020-2021 school year. FBLA means a number of things to me. It means staring starry-eyed at the presenter on stage feeling the world expand with an immeasurable number of possibilities, it means late nights staring at the ceiling of our hotel room pondering our existence, it means stopping in the hallway to share a jittery conversation with my friends as we prepare for our event. I look forward to taking part recreating this experience for you.

Aside from FBLA, I take part in National Beta Club and Destination Imagination. I also enjoy singing, writing, and drawing but mostly I like to listen to stories and I hope to have the chance to listen to yours. AREA 7 VP Monique Tran Hey Texas FBLA! My name is Monique Tran and I am honored to be serving as your 2020-2021 Area 7 Vice President! I am currently a senior at Keller Central High School and have been pursuing my goals and passions within FBLA since my freshman year! I am looking forward to this upcoming year as an opportunity for growth and leadership for all FBLA members. Many people have always had the impression that FBLA was for students with goals to pursue a career in business, but despite my interests in pursuing a career in children’s healthcare, I’ve learned an immense amount of valuable skills and lessons. In addition to FBLA, the other clubs I am a part of are the NHS and the National Spanish Honor Society. I am also the Social Media officer of my schools’ Associ-Asian club, which is a club that brings recognition to the different Asian cultures. This upcoming year will be my fourth year a part of the varsity tennis team at my high school as well as my leadership as Team Captain this upcoming year! Whether you find me on the courts or not, I am always spending time with family or exploring new places to travel and hang out with friends. I am so excited to be a part of the State Action team and can’t wait to be a part of your FBLA journey. See you soon!

The 2020 National Leadership Experience (NLE) was a virtual event replacing the traditional National Leadership Conference (NLC) due to the continued impact of COVID-19. This virtual event included general sessions, national officer elections, leadership workshops and content, and competitive events with cash awards to the top winners. With 1,239 registered attendees and 952 competitors, NLE empowered attendees with an inspirational keynote address by former FBLA National President J.J. chapter spotlight BY
KHARMA
HALTOM
As a small school with an FBLA chapter, my chapter at Newton High School has to be creative with how our meetings will be run, what activities we will be involved in, and how we engage with our members and advisors. My school has a total of around 300 students with about 30 of those students involved within our FBLA program. However, we see our small numbers as an advantage rather than a downfall. Our focus is based on each individual member’s experience versus the chapter’s development as a whole. Starting last year, my chapter implemented a “How are you?” survey that our members take after each meeting to gain perspective of how each member is doing and how we can better strengthen our chapter as a whole. This survey includes inquiries on how each member enjoyed certain activities, presentations and events, how they’re doing with the process of their competition, if they need any help studying for said competition, and any other questions, comments or concerns they might have. Using this method, more individual voices are heard and different ideas are seen more often, especially from members with more quiet and timid voices. Most members are too scared to voice their concerns due to fear or lack of opportunity; using this survey, we have eliminated that obstacle for these students. While my school has only been using this idea since last year, the Newton High School FBLA chapter has maintained membership numbers, even through the COVID-19 crisis, and has had overall happier members.

community service project MONIQUE
TRAN
Hello Texas FBLA! As members of the Future Business Leaders of America, we are each granted with opportunities to exceed our comfort zones and step foot into a career-driven and creative environment for us to learn, grow, and thrive under different environments. However, although we may be granted these opportunities, there is a generation out there full of creativity and knowledge that lacks the opportunity to thrive in classrooms and places where creativity is expressed. Texas FBLA’s community service project this year is Project Sunshine, a nonprofit organization that raises awareness for mentally ill pediatric patients that are isolated in hospitals. Through volunteering, Project Sunshine focuses on
creating
a
comfortable
environment
for
patients
to

be
accommodated by in-person volunteers who volunteer time to help mentor and tutor the patients. One of the ways of volunteering that Texas FBLA focuses on is the assembling of the Activity Kits that Project Sunshine provides to patients. Each activity kit can be varied amongst all careers, which focuses on STEM, healthcare, art, and so much more. The activity kits can be mailed to our chapters, assembled, and then sent back to the hospital to be given out to each patient. The activity kits grant each patient with a creative outlet to experience, and regardless of mental disabilities or isolation in the hospital, each

american enterprise day ALYAH CONDE
WHAT IS AMERICAN ENTERPRISE DAY
American Enterprise Day was first declared in 1980 as a way to promote the American Enterprise system. The idea of having a day dedicated to the enterprise system was thought of by President Jimmy Carter, and has been celebrated annually on November 15th for the past 40 years! WHY WE SHOULD CELEBRATE
We celebrate American Enterprise Day because it’s a day we can acknowledge the American free enterprise system. In our country, the American free enterprise system grants people, both individuals and groups, more freedom and liberty to construct and create their own businesses. With November 15th being the official date, we are able to celebrate the FBLA holiday with activities, projects, and enlighten other people with what American Enterprise Day is all about. American Enterprise Day is one of the most important days in the history of the Future Business Leaders of America. It is a day meant for us to remember the independence we as American Citizens were given to make our own choices in our free enterprise system. Not only is American Enterprise Day a day that is celebrated, but it is also a reminder to us that the enterprise system is a guide for us and our financial choices in our daily lives.

Texas FBLA, The 2020-2021 State Officer Team has been working tirelessly to ensure that the upcoming school year continues to be enriching and enjoyable for our members throughout Texas. This month, we have been working on our upcoming Fall Area Workshops. We are very excited about the virtual workshops as it will allow us to have a wider variety of amazing speakers from all over Texas attending. We will have more details coming in next month’s article. Our officers have also been working on Chapter Resources for our Local Chapters throughout Texas. The State Officer Team wishes to make the job of our School Club's Officer Teams as easy as possible. So far we have been working on social media information, and how to grow your club's social media presence. We have also reached out to homeschool groups and organizations throughout Texas to give homeschoolers the opportunity to take part in our amazing organization. We believe everyone should have access to our engaging club and take advantage of the opportunities and resources that we strive to provide for each and every one of our members. We are also continuing to work on recruitment materials for Local Clubs to use in these unique times. One of the best ways to recruit amidst the outbreak of COVID-19 is through social media, so be on the lookout for new social media posts and how to take utilize social media for your local recruitment efforts. Our State Officer Team hopes you are staying safe and making the most out of the crazy times that we are in. Just remember history is being written as we speak so now is the time to make your mark.

area workshops BY

Magic. That was the theme of last year’s Area 5 Workshop, and it truly lived up to its name. I watched small words make a large impact, connections being formed, and indifferent faces molding into a resolute sense of purpose. Oh, and I watched a cup float in mid-air. Fall workshop is an FBLA tradition that initiates a year of growth and learning, and no matter what the theme, it’s always magical. A place to make new friends and see the strength in succeeding together. To build teams and learn how to maximize a group’s productivity by listening to others and utilizing the individual strengths and differences of each member to create a powerful unit. Furthermore, the many impactful speakers - ranging from professionals who stand out in their fields to trailblazing students who can relate to their audience that take the stage at Fall Workshop have a longlasting impact on members that transcends the four hours spent there. Speakers in the past have included magicians, company CEO’s, and professional motivational orators. Occasionally, speakers from colleges provide scholarship opportunities for upperclassmen. There is also an abundance of student-led workshops that provide a unique opportunity for attendees to learn from others close to their age. Some workshop topics include job interview, team building, and communication - skills that students will require throughout their lives regardless of whether they pursue a career in business. These breakout sessions enable students to participate in fun, interactive activities while expanding their network and learning from other student leaders. Overall, Fall Workshop is an excellent way to kick-off the year with FBLA while getting acquainted with others in the area. Though this year’s fall workshop is going to look a little different, with many areas opting to go virtual for the safety of members, it will still be as magical as ever.
