FCE Project Bulletin
2008 The Foundation for Cross-Cultural Education (FCE) was established in 1991 and is called to make disciples of Jesus Christ by means of education and training. It is an international, non-denominational, and non-profit making Christian mission organization. “The content of our training is “to know Christ” and the practical implementation of our training is “to live Christ.”
“God’s work done in God’s way never lacks God’s supply.” - Hudson Taylor, Missionary to China Faith is a journey with God and as I look back at where FCE started, that place of humble beginnings, the point where God invited us to join with Him in His work, I marvel at the distance we have journeyed together. As I trace the path God started us on, I see lush valleys of calm, deserts of drudgery, mountains of struggle, muddy marshes of testing, and peaks of perspective. I see the many people that have held our hands on this journey of faith, those faithful ones who have strengthened and enabled us to remove the boulders, to make a level way where we have walked. I see the path broadening, growing, becoming a road, a highway, accessing and serving many landscapes and peoples. I see God’s faithfulness in every step. And now I turn to look ahead and to the way God is opening up before us and I see that we have just begun. The need is great. I feel small. But our God is big. It is together that we move on from here. It is together as the Body of Christ that we will continue to “prepare the way for the people; build up, build up the highway; clear it of stones; [and] lift up a signal over the peoples.” (Isa 62:10) FCE cannot function in isolation and it is because of the wider body of Christ that we are able to be effective. This work is impossible without the support of communities, church bodies, Christian schools, mission organisations, exstudents and other individuals around the globe who prayerfully and practically contribute to the continuation and growth of the ministry. As we respond to God’s leading and to the task of transforming communities, we are continually faced with new needs and challenges. We cannot do it alone. I invite you to join us, to be a part of this journey of faith. That may involve joining with us physically, prayerfully, and financially. It may involve mobilising others to do the same. Whatever the case; it is a journey of faith that I invite you to walk with us. Just like you, we know there is a world full of hurt and bondage out there. We can make the difference. Let’s do it! This 2008 Project Bulletin highlights some of the urgent projects we are currently involved with. Neels de Jager International Director
All training is missions focused and its aim is: To lead people to the person Jesus Christ, to a relationship which is not characterized by religious rituals and keeping of laws, but a life grounded in Him. To make them followers of Jesus Christ; To encourage them to make a difference where they live and work, by sharing Jesus Christ; To give them skills which can be used to bring transformation to their
FCE has
permanent training centres in Southern and Central Africa. Staff members live and work among the people they are training. There are currently 92 full-time staff members who work in the following Training Centres: Wolseley, South Africa (Head quarters) Pretoria, South Africa (Academic and Administrative Centre) Namibia Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe Masaiti/Kotini Eden, Zambia Kalungu, Zambia Livingstonia, Malawi Goli, Yei County, South Sudan India Through relationships and friendship evangelism the communities around the FCE Training Centres are ministered to. This opens doors for the whole community to receive different forms of training. FCE works according to this model at all its training centres in Africa, to bring people to the Lord, showing them how to be self-sufficient, to live a worthy life, to serve one another and to care for the widows and orphans in their own communities.
FCE Training and Equipping Courses Disciple Equipping Course
Duration: 7 weeks
This course is foundational and is a pre-requisite for any further training with FCE. Course goers from around the world and from all walks of life come to attend this course, allowing the Lord to transform and renew their minds, as described in Romans 12:2.
Mission Foundation Year
Duration: 1 year
This includes the Disciple Equipping Course, which provides foundational training in and exposure to missions in a cross-cultural setting at our Training Centres in Central Africa. The training includes both theoretical and practical aspects of missions such as: cross-cultural communication; community transformation; history of the Gospel; pioneer missions; evangelism; etc. This kind of training is essential for anyone considering becoming a missionary in any part of the world. Upon completion students either return to their sending church or organisation, continue with their studies, or apply for further training with FCE.
Further Training Certificate in Community Training

This training equips the student to live and work as a facilitator in disadvantaged communities. They are trained in adult literacy, children’s ministry, school readiness programmes, agriculture, building skills, carpentry, general health care, mechanics, hospitality, art, needle craft, etc. Practical discipleship and the integration of biblical principles is emphasized throughout.
Certificate in Hospitality and Tourism

Diploma in Primary Education
Duration: 3 years
Since the opening of the first Teacher Training College on January 1997, FCE has been training missionary teachers from around the world. Throughout their training students are involved in surrounding communities with children’s ministry, school readiness programmes and adult literacy. After 3 years of academic and professional training, the students receive a Diploma in Primary Education. They are equipped to teach ages 5 – 13 in various conditions and circumstances, even establishing new schools in remote areas. They are trained to be the “living curriculum”, interpreting all subjects from a biblical perspective and following a biblically integrated teaching model, to have a heart for the lost and to make their classroom their mission field.
FCE Businesses FCE has established businesses, including guesthouses in South Africa, Namibia and Zambia and a “Biltong shop selling specially treated dried meat. The aim is to generate income to help meet the needs of the Training Centres and the local communities, where they are situated.
FCE Schools A pre-school and primary school were established for the children of staff and students at the Training Centres in Zambia. All the teachers have been trained by FCE. This has helped to alleviate some of the pressure on parents to provide education for their own children, whilst on the mission field. It also means that children do not have to be sent away to study.
When FCE started working in the communities surrounding Masaiti Training Centre (Zambia) in 1997, it was noticeable that very few village children actually went to school, either because the parents could not afford it, or because there were no schools in the vicinity. In 2002, FCE started with a school for these children, consisting of grass roofs supported by wooden poles. All the teachers are trained by FCE and are providing a Christ-centred, high quality education, which is in turn changing lives and communities. Today, by the grace of God and through generous contributions from supporters all over the world, we are building a school complex next to the original site. With the involvement of local parents, 8 brick classrooms have now been built.
PROJECT 1 Sponsorship of Student Teachers and Community Developers Project Description What we believe and the way we think shapes the way we live. Teachers shape the mindsets of the next generation. Education is a powerful tool and FCE has witnessed how well trained, Christ-centred teachers have been significant in bringing transformation to poverty stricken areas. Some of the problems facing the communities that FCE is working with are: Destructive family life due to immorality; alcohol abuse and poor management; famine and malnutrition due to a lack of planning and effective farming; inadequate leadership; poverty and poor economy; lack of education. The heartbeat of FCE is the transformation of whole communities where Jesus Christ is at the centre of every aspect of society. At the FCE College, students from South Africa, Zambia, Namibia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Kenya and India are trained as teachers and community development workers. Young men and women from different tribal areas are trained and equipped to bring transformation to their own communities. Because of the great need, these trainers and educators are in high demand. Most of the students are unable to cover the full cost of their training. At present there are 35 students who are able to pay only 20% of their fees. FCE has in faith committed to subsidise the remainder and has initiated the Student Sponsorship Bursary Fund.
Project Needs To train one student for a year costs ZAR14000 (US$ 1750).
Subsidised students pay ZAR2800 (US$350) per year
The Student Sponsorship Bursary Fund requires ZAR11200 (US$1400) per year to cover the basic costs of accommodation, lodging, training material, stationary and research resources per student.
“ Young men and women from different tribal areas are trained and equipped to bring transformation to their own communities ”
The heartbeat of FCE is the transformation of whole communities where Jesus Christ is at the centre of every aspect of society.
PROJECT 2 Community Training Centres (CTC) Project Description The schooling of children in rural areas has been neglected for many years. Because of economic hardships and a scarcity of schools, many children are unable to receive even a basic education. In order to provide schooling for children in remote areas, FCE initiated a community based project where parents assist with the building of a Community Training Centre, consisting of classrooms and other facilities. FCE in turn provides training material and teachers. More than 160 children are presently receiving excellent training because of this joint venture. Another 250 children are involved in child stimulation programmes, preparing them for school. FCE are looking for partners who can help with this immense task. Most children that attend the CTC have a poor diet. Hunger is a reality for them. A feeding programme has been initiated to see that there is adequate nourishment for the children. At the moment FCE is committed to provide one meal a day. The CTC is also used to train the parents: Men are trained in agriculture, brick-making, thatching, building and carpentry. Women are trained in primary health care, cookery and sewing. Adult literacy is also presented to both men and women. Project Needs A church group from Australia helped FCE to build 8 classrooms. There is need for a further 8 classrooms. 5 classrooms are also required for Child Stimulation programmes. At present activities are conducted in makeshift shelters, but sun, wind and rain make this task immensely difficult.
Building of 1 classroom: ZAR40000 (US$5000) To feed a child monthly (1 meal/day) : ZAR80 (US10) Text books, stationary ( 1 child / year) : ZAR 200 (US$20)
PROJECT 3 Transport Project Description Most Training Centres are located in rural areas, away from the towns and cities. Access is often difficult and a heavy demand is placed on the vehicles in use. These are mainly personal vehicles being used to meet the needs of the various Training Centres. Staff and students need to cover long distances, often in rain and heat, as they serve in the different communities. Supplies are only found in the towns and cities and vehicles are needed to transport these goods to the centres. This is an urgent need. Project Needs
2 x 15-seater buses: ZAR200000 (US$ 25000) (Each) 1 x Vehicle for College: ZAR80000 (US$ 10000) 1 x Vehicle for Base School : ZAR70000 (US$ 8750) 5 x Motor bikes for Community workers: ZAR20000 (US$ 2500) (Each)
PROJECT 4 Carpentry Project Description FCE has 2 small carpentry shops and building projects place a heavy demand on them. They are responsible for felling, drying and cutting timber. Everything from roof trusses to cabinets come out of the workshop. Local men are also trained here in valuable skills. At the moment, however, one missionary must manage two workshops, 900km apart, to meet the demand.
Project Needs ď‚ˇď€ 50 x Logs: ZAR100 (US$15 per log) Skilled tradesman (Builders, carpenters, plumbers, painters) who can help with the building projects for one month or more. Short term groups are also very welcome
PROJECT 5 New Campus Building Project Project Description FCE’s main Training Centre is in Masaiti, Central Zambia. At present the buildings of a former Agricultural College are being rented from the Government. Our contract expired in July 2006 and it is by God’s grace that we are still on the site. The new campus, Kotini Eden (“like Eden”) is 8km away. FCE urgently need to finish the new buildings at Kotini Eden so that we can move over. So far an ablution block, kitchen, dining hall, administration offices, student accommodation and four classrooms have been built. The interior of these buildings still need completion. Staff accommodation is urgently needed and need to be build. Staff accommodation is still remaining to be built. As the work in and around Kalungu (North East Zambia) has developed, FCE also need to built 6 more staff units and 4 classrooms there.

PROJECT 6 Kitchen Dining Hall Interior, Kotini Eden College Campus Project Description The rented kitchen facilities at Masaiti are being used to their limit. Over 150 staff members and students are fed every day from the kitchen. This is a mammoth task when you consider that it is all done on two charcoal burners. With the help of a German mission organisation, FCE was able to build a beautiful dining hall and kitchen at the new campus site. This can accommodate and serve 300 people. The structure was finished in 2007. Now the interior needs to be completed so that the kitchen can start to operate. PROJECT 7 New Training Centre, Malawi FCE has through the years trained about 200 Malawians. Some of the courses were conducted in Malawi, by renting different training centres. Other courses took place at the FCE Training College in Masaiti, Zambia. A beautiful piece of land in the North of the country has been acquired ideally situated next to the Malawi Lake. Relationships have been developed with local families and leaders and the need for training, equipping and development is huge. Building plans for the new FCE Training Centre have been drawn up and we trust that the building can start as soon as possible. The Training Centre will be well equipped to accommodate and train 50 students and house10 staff members. The area along the lake will be developed with 5 beautiful self- catering beach huts for tourism. The aim is to generate income through tourism, which in turn will provide funds for the training. Estimated costs to build this training centre: ZAR3 000 000 (US$ 380 000)

PROJECT 8 “ 90% of teachers are unqualified and only have a primary education. New Training Centre, South Sudan Years of civil war have devastated Sudan and the recent time of peace has revealed the extent of the damage. The schooling and education of young people has suffered greatly. 90% of teachers are unqualified and many of them only have a primary education. FCE has developed a short term training programme for teachers. More than 80 teachers have completed this programme to date. Eight of these student teachers have been sent to the FCE campus in Zambia for further training but ,there is a need for a permanent training centre in Sudan Different possibilities have been investigated and a piece of land in Eastern Sudan has been found suitable for a training centre. This training centre will focus on discipleship training, missionary training, teacher training, training in community development and agricultural training and development. The proposed plan will include college and school classrooms, accommodation for students and staff and development of infrastructure and agriculture. The building conditions are extremely difficult, but if funding is available the training centre can be completed within 3 years.
Estimated costs to build this training centre: ZAR6m (US$ 750 000)
