The Foundation for Cross-Cultural Education Where does FCE operate? FCE: International Director, Neels de Jager

Who is FCE?

FCE is a mission organisation that was established in 1991 and is called to make disciples of Jesus Christ by means of education and training. All training is missions focused and its aim is: •

• • •

to lead people to the person Jesus Christ, to make them followers of Jesus Christ, to encourage them to make a difference where they live and work, by sharing Jesus Christ and to give them skills which can be used to bring transformation to their communities

What is FCE’s vision?

Jesus Christ, making disciples through us worldwide, by building a Highway of Holiness, through education and training.

How does FCE operate?

FCE has permanent training centers in Southern and Central Africa. Staff members live and work among the people they are training. There are currently 82 full-time staff members who work in the following Training Centers: • Wolseley, South Africa (Headquarters) • Pretoria, South Africa (Academic and Administrative Centre) • Namibia • Koti ni Eden, Zambia • Kalungu, Zambia • Livingstonia, Malawi • India

The villages around our training centres are our areas of ministry. By means of friendship evangelism, we minister to the whole village: • men are trained in agriculture, brick-making, thatching, building and carpentry • women are trained in primary health care, cookery, sewing, adult literacy • children are prepared for formal schooling by means of games, stories and large and small motor skills and through children’s evange lism programmes they are led to Jesus This opens doors for the whole community to receive different forms of training. FCE works according to this model at all its training centers in Africa, to bring people to the Lord, showing them how to be self-sufficient, to live a worthy life, to serve one another and to care for the widows and orphans in their own communities.

Proposals for projects FCE works in and through relationships. It is therefore important that each person involved in FCE can testify to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. FCE trains and equips missionaries, missionaries teachers and community workers to function from a truly Biblical perspective and to make a difference for the Kingdom of God. The content of our training is ‘to know Christ’ and the practical implementation of our training is ‘to live” Christ. FCE organises outreaches to expose and involve the wider Body of Christ in the work and projects of FCE.FCE creates opportunities for volunteers to serve and gain experience in cross-cultural enviroment which functions from a Christ-centred perspective.

As we respond to God’s leading and to the task of transforming communities, we are continually faced with new needs and challenges. We cannot do it alone. We need the support of the wider body of Christ around the globe who prayerfully and practically contribute to the continuation and growth of the ministry.

Koti ni Eden - Staff Houses/Accommodation

I

n December 2010 FCE moved from Masaiti to Koti ni Eden in Zambia. This move to our own buildings and own land was a spiritual experience. This is a NEW BEGINNING. The Lord confirmed that to us from Ezekiel 37:14: “I will put My Spirit in you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken it and performed it.” We praise the Lord for what He has established during the years at Koti ni Eden and we are deeply thankful

towards supporters from many parts of the world who provided finances, prayed and came to help physically to set up the buildings. The staff of FCE needs to have proper housing, as most of them are married and have children of their won. Staff members are currently living in the student dorms and more that one are living together in the single homes. FCE is looking for partners who can help with the following: 9 Single quarters for staff 4 Two-bedroom houses for staff

Koti ni Eden - Kitchen Project

T

he nature of food preparation in Africa is mostly women’s work. It involves cultivating small patches of vegetables and grains by hand, pounding grains with a pestle, fetching wood and chipping it down for cooking, balancing large buckets of water on one’s head and carrying it from water source to home, bending over the open fires outside a tiny hut. The daily menus consist of Nshima(a porridge made with corn flour) the basis of life in Zambia and a relish, a second dish which is always served with Nshima. Westerners find it difficult to adapt to this menu. The diners sit around the table or on the floor. The customary procedure is to take a lump of Nshima and then slowly shape it into a round ball using the palm and the fingers of the right hand. The

nshima is then dipped into the relish before it is eaten. The men eat first and the leftovers are for the women and children. At Koti ni Eden, our training centre in Zambia, it is not possible for us to adapt only to the traditional way of cooking and eating, mainly because we are a crosscultural group and because we have to feed over 300 staff members, students and workers every day from the kitchen. Our menu includes Nshima and relish, but we find it necessary to include a variety of nutritious food and fruit that builds the immune system against malaria and other ailments. Therefore we use our kitchen also as a training area to expose the people to diversity and to train them in healthy eating and thinking.

in 2007. Now the interior needs to be completed so that the kitchen can start to operate. We do not only feed FCE’s staff, students and workers from the kitchen, but during the hunger season we also cook for the children at the CTC and trust the Lord for ample supplies to take care of the less privilege in the communities surrounding us.

With the help of a German Mission Organization, FCE was able to build a beautiful dining hall and kitchen at the campus. The structure was finished

Kalungu Training Centre Zambia

F

CE has permanent training centers in Southern and Central Africa. Kalungu is FCE’s most Northern training centre. Strategically situated 60km from the Tanzanian border and close to the Malawian border. It is about one day’s travel from our Training Centre Koti ni Eden near Ndola in Zambia and 5 hours drive from our training centre at the lake of Malawi. Work at this Training Centre started in September 2000. A conference centre, kitchen and dining hall have been erected. There is also a house for the staff and two dormitories for students. Kalungu also boasts with a King’s Highway Camping site and chalets for tourists. Funds generated from this venture are used to help with the running costs of the training centre. The training that takes place includes: The Discipleship Mission Training, Mission Training, Community Development and Agricultural training. All training is focused on serving the people in the villages. FCE workers are involved in the community by means of friendship evangelism: we minister to the whole village and we train the men in agriculture, making of bricks, thatching of roofs, building and carpentry. The women are trained in primary health care, cookery and sewing. Adult literacy is also presented to both men and women. Children are prepared for formal schooling by means of games, stories and large and small motor skills, and through children’s evangelism programmes they are led to Jesus. A vegetable garden has been established and it is developed not only to provide food for the staff, but also serves as an example and an incentive for the local peoKalungu: Solar Power Estimate Solar Power System

ple to grow a variety of vegetables for their own consumption. The Firm Foundation teachings prepare the people to receive Christ as their savior and to be set free from the bondage and fear of witchcraft that is practiced in most of the villages. The heartbeat of FCE is the transformation of whole communities where Jesus Christ is at the centre of every aspect of society. Luke Sichone and Amick Phiri are two young men who grew up in Kalungu village. They obeyed God’s call and were trained by FCE. Today Luke is the principal of FCE’s Village Training Centre at Koti ni Eden and Amick is the Training Centre Leader of Kalungu. Joseph is a farmer in a village in Kalungu. He went through the training and today he serves the people in his village, runs the vegetable project and is a leading figure in the community. For all these years we have managed without electricity and we made use of lamps, candles and a generator. The need for electricity has become a major priority to continue effectively with our training. Much time was spent in research to try to find the best option and solution. We gained advice far and wide in regards to solar energy and believes this is the most effective way to go. With help we can set up solar power which will provide for our needs for the next 8 years.

Solar Power System A professional solar system engineering company in Namibia, HPS Engineering, was contacted with above needs. The following system was suggested to meet the above needs. It is also possible to expand (by increasing the size of the inverter, the size of the solar regulator the number/capacity of batteries and the number/capacity of solar panels) the system, within limits, if the need for more power should arise later on. The cost below excludes the cost of: • Transportation from Namibia to Zambia; • A small building (3m by 4m) to house the system. It must be well ventilated. The batteries must be stacked on a steel frame to save space and isolated from cold surfaces like concrete floors. Doors and windows must be strong to stop burglars from stealing components. • Digging trenches for cabling; • Cabling (about R50 per meter) for the solar panels if the panels cannot be installed close to the batteries.
