NO LIFE PLACES: ABANDONED VILLAGES IN CRETE (4 PARTS)

Research paper on the abandoned villages of Crete. Historical data, causes of desolation, elements of folk architecture and examples of existing villages are presented. A journey is made to six villages from one end of Crete, almost to the other. The aim was to discover the Cretan traditional landscape through observations, photographs and the analysis and recording of elements of Cretan folk architecture. A topic that has not been sufficiently studied is the abandonment of villages, settlements, neighbourhoods and metochia. It has always existed as a positioning in surveys, articles, discussions but never as a question. Why do people abandon villages? What reasons influence them? In a piece of research below, architecture is analysed in relation to the different types of abandonment that exist depending on the location.
