Homestead
4 The ever-growing appeal of Modern Farmhouse decor is it’s versatile fusion of the rustic and the refined. Utilitarian, natural and appealingly eclectic, Modern Farmhouse takes the pastoral motifs of the traditional farmstead and blends them with the comforts of a modern home. Our Homestead collection takes a fresh look at this engaging style and discovers decorative vintage treasures from country markets but updates them with a contemporary twist. We rediscover the simpler things that connect us to the land including: farm animals; wholesome food and wild flowers. There’s a new look for typography on seed packets and old schoolhouse chalkboards, expressive abstracts and transitional landscapes where winding country tracks invite you home.

We’ve chosen a predominantly neutral palette to enable you to freely mix the collection with your existing styles. You’ll find that all our art in Homestead is versatile and eclectic and will work effortlessly in many different interiors from suburban homes to urban loft apartments. We may not all have country roots but deep down many of us connect deeply with the idea of country living and the balance and sense of belonging it brings to us, wherever we may call home.

Artist in focus SARAH HART MORGAN Sarah Hart Morgan was born in Virginia and has spent most of her life in Virginia. After studying Design in college, she and her husband did a small stint in the big city before realising they needed to be back home and never far from the mountains. With her photography she is drawn towards the smaller details found in nature, playing with natural light, texture, pattern and movement. Her motto in life is to “Live Inspired”.
Who inspires you? Photographer, Artist or otherwise? GCL: RX85820
Mother Nature is my biggest and most constant source of inspiration. I also love Monet for his use of color and texture, and other period impressionist artists.
(Ratio 2:3)
How would you describe your photography? I like to try different photography techniques, however, the common theme is always nature. I love pushing the ‘rules’ and boundaries in photography to pull out hidden colors, textures, and shapes that may not be first visible when looking at the scene in front of you.

Are you trying to communicate through your photography? I think nature has more to tell us than what first meets the eye. So many details can go unnoticed until you slow down and pay attention. My intention and what I hope to do, is to pull those details out for others to view and enjoy.
GCL: RX85814 (Ratio 3:2)
GCL: RX85818 (Ratio 2:3)
What helps you focus? I consider my studio time to be out and about in nature. I love to walk and hike in our state and national parks and most of my work happens during these walks. I tend to let myself wander, physically and mentally. I am in more of a flow state during these times, my head kind of takes a backseat and I am able to just be in more of a flow state. When something catches my eye-sometimes it’s the shape of a branch, the color of a flower, or beautiful light coming from the tree canopy- I stop and work with it. Shooting different angles, trying the different in-camera techniques I like to work with. Once I am back home at the computer to edit, I like to listen to instrumental music to help me focus on editing. I have several different playlists on Spotify I like to rotate through.

With regards to the lockdown, how are you feeling? This probably goes against the mainstream, but being forced to slow down has been a blessing, creatively. My family and I live on a beautiful piece of property that has been a safe haven during this time of isolation. I know not everyone has that and I don’t take it for granted. Being given the gift of time to focus, make changes, release what hasn’t been working, has given me space to create and explore which has been very fulfilling as an artist which again, goes against a lot of what others are facing during this time, and it’s not something I ever want to take for granted.
On a lighter note, what has been a highlight for you over this last week? This past weekend was a good one. My sister and I hiked in a Virginia State Park we hadn’t been to yet. The next day we had friends come over for the first time since quarantine and the kids got to hang out and play with the dogs in the creek on our property.

Do you have other outlets/hobbies outside of photography? I am forever a student of nature. I am a surface pattern designer as well, and that body of work also explores the hidden patterns found in nature. I make my own soap and skin care products from local and foraged ingredients found around my area. My family and I live in the beautiful mountains of Virginia and we love to hike in our many state and national parks as well as kayak the Shenandoah River, which we are lucky enough to have in our backyard. I love to garden and decorate our home with thrifted and found treasures we find on our travels. GCL: RX85097 (Ratio 3:2) GCL: RX85309 (Ratio 3:2)

Do you have a favourite piece of your own? Sunsets and water have always been very special to me and the memories they hold. ‘Vevang’ holds those such memories. Pictured above RX85614
