Get Meditating In 5 Minutes. Easy And Free! With the Stop, Breathe & Think app, you can develop and apply kindness and compassion in your daily life through a process called STOP, BREATHE & THINK: STOP: Stop what you are doing. Check in with what you are thinking, and how you are feeling. BREATHE: Practice mindful breathing to create space between your thoughts, emotions and reactions. THINK: Learn to broaden your perspective and strengthen your force field of peace and calm by practicing one of the meditations. What Is Mindfulness And Meditation? Mindfulness is a way of paying attention to what is happening right now, by observing what’s going on inside (your thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations) and outside (your interactions and surroundings) with an open mind and without judging. Mindfulness helps us stay focused and present when we practice the two kinds of meditation offered in SB&T: Active Thinking, where we intentionally direct our thoughts and imagination to think positive thoughts and feel positive feelings (like kindness and compassion) - and - Resting the Mind, where we let it all go. Stop, Breathe, & Think is available on Apple iOS, Android and on the web. For more information go to www.stopbreathethink.org.

Stay Healthy as a Family in the New Year BY BARBARA L. BALDWIN, DO, FACOP
It’s that time of the year to commit to your New Year’s resolution. One of the most common resolutions is a promise to exercise more and stay fit -- and it is often one we fail to keep! Try these tips to help you and your family stay healthy in the New Year and all year long. Choose an activity you can easily convert into exercise. If you live close to your child’s school, don’t carpool. Instead, walk or ride a bicycle. With mom or dad walking or riding along, this simple activity can be turned into both a fun event as well as exercise. Mix it up: walk one day, then ride a bike the next. Save the car for rainy days. Take different routes to make it interesting. Stop off at a park on the way home. Spice up the time when you perform routine activities. If you set aside an hour every Saturday for the family to dust, vacuum, straighten the kids’ rooms, etc., make it fun. Be silly. Turn on music and dance while dusting. The child with the best dance

routine -- and who completes their chores -- gets a prize! Get the family involved in a new activity. Sign up the kids to learn martial arts: they will get a kick out of sparring with dad. Have family swim meets at the pool with prizes for swimming across the pool the most times or for the first time a small child splashes into the water. Get involved in ‘geocaching’ – finding hidden treasures and planting some as well. Get a dog. Walking the dog, running with the dog and throwing balls with the dog are all ways to get you and your family moving. Find out which school activities you can participate in. Many schools have walks and mini-races for special causes. Get the family involved, and get into ‘training’ mode by practicing the activity in the weeks ahead. Or, join in a club’s carwash to raise money for a trip. Plan ahead. Everyone will be hungry after family exercise sessions. Prepare healthy
snacks, such as fruits and veggies -- not chips and cookies. Drink water, not soda.

How to Eat Like the French BY SARAH LYONS
I currently have three toddlers in my house. One loves veggies and fruit and rejects meat, one eats everything except bread, and one maintains a not so healthy diet of chicken nuggets and Goldfish crackers. Studies show that French children are more likely to eat a variety of foods and maintain a healthier weight. What makes French kids so different than their American counterparts? No snacks - Americans love their snacks. We bring snacks to soccer games, work snack time into our elementary school days, and provide snacks at play dates. The French do not snack in between meals, making them hungry when it is time to sit down for lunch. Imagine how hungry your child would be if there were no crackers, fruit, or cookies to snack on before dinner. They might even be hungry enough to sample some new foods at their next meal. Portion control - French people do allow generous portions of food because they are hungry, however they do not eat gigantic portions like we do in the United States. Consider giving a generous portion that will be satisfying rather than a portion that will make you so full you are uncomfortable. Learn to stop eating when you are full, not when the plate is clean and teach your children to do the same.
10 January 2017 | PB Parenting |
No eating on the go - Many American families eat on the go. Fast food, snacks in the car, and rushing through meals is becoming the norm. In France, meals are to be savored and enjoyed. The French sit down at the kitchen table to eat a meal and this is their focus. They do not watch television or work while they eat, a meal is to simply be enjoyed. When they are done eating they clean up and go on to the next thing. In other words, no fast food, no snacks, and no standing at the counter to eat. Slow down and enjoy meal time, both the food and the company. Eat real food - The French avoid processed foods that are full of chemicals and wasted calories. They focus on real whole foods such as cheese, yogurt, bread, fish, meat, and even dessert. Instead of filling up on juice or soda, they drink water with their meal. Full fat foods are offered rather than low calorie or fat free foods because they are more filling and healthier overall. Meals usually have three courses - salad, a main dish, and always dessert. Enjoyment is strongly encouraged over guilt. Eat less at night - The largest meal of the day is typically dinner in America. In France, a full breakfast is always served and lunch is the largest meal of the day. Dinner will
typically be a lighter meal. Once the kitchen is closed after dinner, there are no bedtime snacks. A lighter meal in the evening will help with healthy sleep habits and maintaining a healthy weight.. Enjoy cooking - The French culture enjoys food and therefore enjoys cooking. Get the kids involved in the food preparation process. Let them experiment with different flavors and spices in the kitchen. Getting kids involved in the preparation of a meal encourages them to try new foods and might reduce the battle to try new things. Making all these changes at once is not realistic for most families. Apply these tips for an overall healthier mindset and make small lifestyle changes that will make a big impact on your family’s health long term. Sarah Lyons is a mom of six children, including 2 year old triplets.

Tips for Staying in Shape on the Road Family reunions, annual conventions, or just in need of a getaway —there are infinite reasons for traveling and numerous ways to forget healthy eating and exercise habits when on the road. Whether it’s a weeklong stay at a five-star resort or a two-day meeting at an airport hotel, the American Council on Exercise (ACE) has tips for keeping fit and healthy.
a small fee. If you are strapped for time or no facility is available, most hotel rooms have enough floor space to allow you to do some push-ups, crunches, lunges, and stretching before starting your day. Plan a specific time each day or every other day to do your strengthening and cardiovascular routines (a good plan is to alternate days between the two).
Big City Fitness There is no excuse for not finding places to exercise when every city has a great staircase, stadium, or tall buildings where you can master the stairs without a machine. If stairs aren’t your thing, cities have lots of places—such as parks, malls, or walking paths—ideal for walking or jogging. (Walking will increase your fitness and decrease your taxi fares.)
Fitness on Vacation If you are planning your next vacation, why not make fitness a theme. With some good logistics, you can get in a daily workout without it feeling like a chore. Skiing and backpacking are both activities that get you outside and get your heart pumping. If you aren’t into scheduling your own events, check with local environmental organizations, recreation clubs or university programs to see what group vacations they offer. Kayaking, trekking, and scuba vacations are all very popular, and will incorporate fitness, fun, and adventure. Just make sure you plan ahead so that you are in the proper shape, and properly trained, to take on these
Prior to departure, find out if your hotel has a workout facility and a pool, and remember to pack your bathing suit and workout clothes. If they don’t have a facility, they may be affiliated with a local gym where you can get a one-day pass for

activities. So hiking the Himalayas isn’t your thing. Even if you choose to relax at a resort or on a tropical beach, you’re still steps from a good workout. Hit the pool or the ocean for a swim, walk the golf course instead of renting a cart, or challenge your travel partner to a jog down the beach (save the strolling for sunset). Indulge, But Don’t Bulge Traveling often means eating what is available, and what’s available isn’t always healthy. A vacation is a time for indulgence, but keep these simple tips in mind, and you will be able to enjoy your meals without taking home extra baggage: • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water, particularly if you are flying or are on long road trips. • Eat at least three times per day to keep from feeling famished and overindulging. This will also give you energy for all of your vacation (or work) activities. • Visit the local market to pick up healthy snacks to carry with you during the day. • Go ahead and splurge on regional dishes or local cuisine, even if they might be higher in fat and calories than you are used to. Just maintain a balance. If you splurge one night, make sure you add some extra activity and eat healthier the next day. The American Council on Exercise (ACE) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the benefits of physical activity and protecting consumers against unsafe and ineffective fitness products and instruction. For more information on ACE and its programs, call (800) 825-3636 or log onto the ACE Web site at www. acefitness.org.
