Letter From

The Publisher

Greetings,

I hope you had a fun spring break! My kids were living their best lives enjoying sports camp and theatre camp. It was a great practice run for this summer which will be here before you know it! I am working on my summer plans right now, as some camps already have full weeks!

Check out our freshly UPDATED Summer Camp Directory starting on page 18. Last month, we talked about how beneficial camp is for kids, but do you know it is good for parents too? Check out the article by Tanni Haas, Ph.D. about how a little time apart this summer can help you too! Read it on page 32.

April is also our baby and maternity issue; my babies are so big now, but I remember getting my oldest child ready for their brother to come home. There are some great tips on preparing your child for a new sibling on page 12. Expectant parents don't plan on their baby visiting the NICU, but it does happen and can be very stressful. On page 8, we have a great article from the March of Dimes on what to expect, how to cope with stress, and how to support someone with a baby in the NICU.

Remember, we are your LOCAL parenting resource and a wealth of information. We are here 24/7 online at www.pbparenting.com or connect to our Facebook Group, Palm Beach County Moms! We are over 16,000 LOCAL moms strong. It is so easy to reach out to such a resource of savvy moms. Our group is over 12 years old, so we have veteran moms (and even some grandmothers) down to expectant moms looking for their first pediatrician. Request to join on Facebook at Palm Beach County Moms.

How do you feel when your baby is in the NICU? When your baby’s in the NICU, you’re probably pretty stressed. Stress is worry, strain or pressure that you feel in response to things that happen in your life. You may be worried about your baby’s condition and when you’ll be able to take him home. Your relationship with your partner may be strained because this situation is new to both of you. You may feel pressure to be with your baby in the NICU instead of at work or home with other children. All these things cause stress.

When your baby’s in the NICU, you may have a lot of different feelings. You may feel:

• Scared about your baby’s medical condition and what may happen to her in the future

• Sad about your baby being in the hospital and not at home like you planned

• Overwhelmed by responsibilities outside the NICU, like going to work, paying bills, taking care of other children and taking care of things at home

• Angry about the changes that the NICU makes in your life and the loss of not just giving birth and taking your healthy baby home

What to Expect When Your Newborn Needs NICU Care

• Guilty that your baby’s in the NICU

• Helpless and frustrated because you can’t do more to help your baby

• Love and pride in your new baby

• Happy about the progress your baby makes and the problems she overcomes

When your baby’s in the NICU, there’s no “normal” way to feel. You and your partner may feel differently. Know that many families who have had a baby born early or sick share the same kinds of feelings that you and your partner have.

How can you take care of yourself when your baby is in the NICU? When your baby’s in the NICU, it may be hard to think about taking care of yourself because you’re so focused on your baby’s needs. But taking care of yourself can help you stay well and have more energy to spend time with your baby.

Here’s what you can do to help take care of yourself when your baby’s in the NICU:

• Stick to a daily routine. Every day, take a shower, eat healthy foods and regular meals, drink plenty of water, and get a good night’s sleep. As part of your routine, decide when

you want to be with your baby in the NICU.

• Connect with other NICU families at NICU classes, in the family lounge or in the NICU hallway. They may understand how you’re feeling better than friends and family who don’t have the same experience. You can meet and talk with other NICU families on shareyourstory.org, the March of Dimes online community for families.

• Take breaks from the NICU. It’s OK to make time for yourself and your family.

• Talk to a counselor. This may be someone from the NICU staff or a social worker or your religious or spiritual leader. Sometimes it’s helpful to talk to someone other than your family and friends.

What can you do if you need to go back to work when your baby’s in the NICU? If you need to go back to work while your baby is still in the NICU, tell the NICU staff. Let them know your work schedule and when you plan to be with your baby. Before going back to work, talk about your schedule with your supervisor. Ask how you can get time off from work if you need to get to the NICU. Ask if you can work different hours so you can be with your baby when it’s best for her.

How can friends and family members help when your baby’s in the NICU? It’s OK to ask for help from your friends and family. Many of them want to help, but they don’t always know how. Tell them exactly what they can do for you. For

example, ask them to:

• Bring a meal or snacks to you and your family at the hospital or at home

• Do your grocery shopping or laundry or clean your home

• Help with your older children

• With your OK, share updates about your baby through blogs, email or social media

• Drive you to and from the hospital

• Go with you to meetings with your baby’s providers at the hospital and take notes to help you remember what was said

• Sit with your baby in the NICU so you can take a break if the NICU allows visitors to be with your baby without you). Or if you have more than one baby in different rooms in the NICU, they can sit with one while you’re with the other.

What if you feel sad and overwhelmed when your baby’s in the NICU? You may be extra emotional when your baby’s in the NICU. But

there may be other reasons you feel sad. For example, you may have the baby blues. Baby blues are feelings of sadness many women have 3 to 5 days after having a baby. The feelings most likely are caused by all the hormones in your body right after pregnancy. You may feel sad or cranky, and you may cry a lot. These feelings usually go away about 10 days after your baby’s birth. If they don’t, tell your provider.

If you have more intense feelings of sadness or worry that last for a long time, you may have postpartum depression (also called PPD). PPD is different from the baby blues. It’s a serious medical condition that needs treatment to get better. PPD often starts 1 to 3 weeks after having your baby, but it can happen any time in the first year of giving birth. Having a baby in the NICU can increase your risk for PPD. If you think you have PPD, tell your health care provider.

Preparing Kids

The arrival of a new baby can bring many changes to a family. Parents spend a lot of energy on preparations, and after the baby arrives, much of the family’s attention involves caring for the newborn.

All this change can be hard for older siblings to handle. It’s common for them to feel jealousy toward the newborn and to react to the upheaval by acting out.

But parents can prepare kids for an addition to the family. Discussing the pregnancy in terms that make sense to kids, making some arrangements, and including kids in the care of the newborn can make things easier for everyone.

During Pregnancy

To tell a child about an impending sibling, consider your own comfort level and your child’s maturity level. Preschoolers, for example, may not grasp concepts of time, so it might not mean much if you say that the baby will arrive in a few months. It may be more useful to explain that the baby will arrive in a particular season, such as winter or when it’s

cold outside. How much detail should you provide? Let your child’s questions be your guide. For example, a 4-year-old child may ask: “Where do babies come from?” Despite how it sounds, the child isn’t asking you to explain sex but probably wants to know where, literally, they come from. It may be enough to explain: “The baby comes from the uterus, which is inside the mother’s belly.” A child who wants to know more will ask.

If your child shows more interest in the baby, you can encourage that by:

• going through your child’s baby pictures

• reading books about childbirth (make sure they’re age-appropriate)

• visiting friends who have infants

• packing a bag for the hospital

• thinking of potential baby names

• going to the doctor to hear the baby’s heartbeat

Also look into sibling birth classes, which many hospitals offer to provide orientation for soon-to-be brothers and sisters. These classes can include lessons on how to hold a

baby, explanations of how a baby is born, and opportunities for kids to discuss their feelings about having a new brother or sister.

Planning for Childbirth

As your due date draws near, make arrangements for older kids for the time when you’re in the hospital. Discuss these plans so kids know what to expect when the day arrives.

Consider letting your child visit you in the hospital as soon as possible after the baby is born, ideally when no other visitors are around — this helps reinforce the birth as an intimate family event.

Try to keep routines as regular as possible in the days and weeks around the baby’s arrival. If you plan to make any room shifts to accommodate the baby, do it a few weeks before your due date.

If your child is approaching a major milestone, like potty training or moving from a crib to a bed, try to make those changes well before your due date or put them off until after the baby has been home for a while.

Bringing the New Baby Home

Once the baby is home, you can help your other kids adjust to the changes. Include them as much as possible in the daily activities involving the baby so that they don’t feel left

out.

Many kids want to help take care of a new baby. Though that “help” may mean that each task takes longer, it can give an older child a chance to interact with the baby in a positive way. Depending on their age, a big brother or sister may want to entertain the baby during a diaper change, help push the carriage, talk to the baby, or help dress, bathe, or burp the baby.

If your child expresses no interest in the baby, don’t be alarmed and don’t force it. It can take time.

Some occasions, like breastfeeding, excludes older kids. For these times, try to have toys on hand so that you can feed the baby without being interrupted or worrying about an older child feeling left out.

Take advantage of chances for one-on-one time with older kids. Spend time together

while the baby is sleeping and, if possible, set aside time each day for older kids to get one parent’s undivided attention. Knowing that there’s special time just for them may help ease any resentment or anger about the new baby. Also remind relatives and friends that your older child might want to talk about something other than the new baby. If relatives or friends ask how they can help, suggest a fun activity or something special for the older child.

Continue to send your older child to childcare or to school, if you’re able. It’s normal to feel guilty about sending your older child away since now you’re home with the new baby (and if you’re home, you might feel that everyone should be). But keeping normal routines is helpful for siblings. And this time can give you precious one-on-one time with the baby that you might not otherwise have. When your older child comes home from childcare or school, plan for some quality family time.

Dealing With Feelings

With all of the changes that a new baby can

bring, some older kids might struggle as they try to adjust.

Encourage older kids to talk about their feelings about the new baby. If a child cannot express those feelings, don’t be surprised if he or she tests limits or reverts to speaking in baby talk.

If your child acts up, don’t bend the rules, but understand what feelings may be motivating that behavior. It could be a sign that your child needs more one-on-one time with you, but make it clear that although his or her feelings are important, they have to be expressed in appropriate ways.

Most parents know that kids benefit tremendously from going to summer camp. But have you ever thought about how sending your kids to camp can benefit you - the parent? Based on my own experiences as a seasoned parent of summer campers as well as conversations with other parents, I can assure you that camp is great for you too.

Parents are used to always putting their kids first. From the moment they wake up in the morning until the time they go to bed at night, they’re constantly on our minds. What do they need? What can we do for them? Imagine what happens when they go off to summer camp and the house is suddenly quiet. Here’s what happens: slowly but surely you begin to relax in a whole different way. Suddenly, you can hear your own thoughts, and that’ll give you the mental space to reflect on what YOU would like to do - to put yourself first for once.

Use that mental space to do things you’ve been wanting and meaning to do all year. Perhaps there’s a hobby you'd like to pursue. While the kids are at camp, you have the time to take that yoga or painting class, and you get to choose - all by yourself - whether you’d like to do it

Why Summer Camp Is Great For… Parents

after work or on the weekend. Get together with some friends you haven’t seen for a while. If they’ve kids at camp, too, chances are that they’re available and eager to spend some time with you. Go on a romantic date or two with your partner. The possibilities are endless.

Being able to focus on yourself, your partner, and other people in your life who mean a lot to you is no small matter. As parents, we’re used to being responsible providers and caregivers.

However, there’s so much more to a person: we’re also partners and friends. These are important parts of our identities that we need to remember to cultivate. Sending your kids to summer camp may bring out your more playful side that you haven’t shown for a while.

Another great thing about sending your kids to summer camp is that it’ll give them an opportunity to develop and reach important developmental milestones without you being there every step of the way. They’ll become more independent, more mature, and much better at solving problems on their own. Trust me: Every time my now-teenage son came home from camp, I could tell that he’d grown in

32 April 2023| PB Parenting |

leaps and bounds. Seeing how your kids grow also makes you trust them more: you realize that they’re able to develop new skills and take care of themselves even when they’re not under your watchful eye.

Ultimately, summer camp is great preparation for the day that all parents will face: the day when their kids move out and they become empty-nesters. You will miss them - a lot - and they’ll miss you too. But, if you’ve done your job well and you have developed deep and meaningful relationships with them, your kids will always come back to visit. Just like they will each year after summer camp.

Tanni Haas, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Communication Arts, Sciences, and Disorders at The City University of New York – Brooklyn College.

Give your child the opportunity to learn everything they ever wanted to know about the performing arts during this special three-week camp. They will explore acting, dance, technical theater and vocal music skills— while creating an original showcase performance!

“I don’t like that.” “I don’t want to eat that!” For parents and caregivers, the struggle of dealing with a picky eater is real. If you’ve ever found yourself negotiating with a child to try one tiny bite of broccoli, you know. The problem with picky eaters is they can miss out on important nutrients found in foods on the so called “I-Don’tEat” list. And, according to the American Heart Association, foods like green vegetables, fruit, skinless poultry and fish, beans, legumes, and nuts, low-fat dairy and whole grains are important for a healthy well-balanced diet.

If you feel like you’ve exhausted all your efforts and want to throw in the towel, don’t give up quite yet. Here are 5 tips to help you deal with even the pickiest eater:

No Short-Order Cooking - Plan meals to include at least one thing that everyone likes and serve one meal for everyone in the family; and try to avoid bending the rules. Preparing different foods for everyone is exhausting and it can take much longer for children to learn to like new foods.

Remember It Takes Eleven Tries to Accept

What About My Picky Eater?

Something - Research has shown it sometimes takes eleven tries for a child to decide if they like a new food. So, keep serving broccoli – and even allow a child to touch it or play with it to learn about how it might feel in their mouth. Always request that they take one bite.

No Clean Plate Club - Help kids focus on eating until they are full rather than finishing every last bite on their plate. Sometimes adults forget that small children have small bellies; a good rule to remember is: one tablespoon of food per age of the child for each dish (about 2 or 3 dishes). So a three-year-old child should receive three tablespoons each of peas, noodles and chicken.

Shop and Cook with the Kids - Kids are more likely to taste a dish if they helped plan or prepare it. Letting kids choose veggies in the supermarket produce section or even in the frozen food aisle will empower them. Involve them with age-appropriate tasks such as in stirring, chopping or measuring ingredients; this will allow them to contribute to a project in which they are proud to share and eat!

Serve Smart Snacks - One of the very best ways to get kids accustomed to eating fruits and

34 April 2023| PB Parenting |
Health & Wellness

veggies is to serve them when they are really hungry at snack time. Veggies and hummus are a simple way to nourish children for play or homework – but not overfill their bellies so they aren’t hungry for a wholesome dinner.

In addition to these tips, the American Heart Association has a wide variety of kid-friendly recipes and nutrition tips which can be found on www.heart.org/kids. But, the resources don’t stop there. Schools that participate in the American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge and American Heart Challenge program, gain access to valuable tools to help teach kids how to be healthy. Ask your kids if their school participates in these programs and if not, visit heart.org/khc to get them signed up.

As I sit here on the official "First Day of Spring" to write this Spring Cleaning article, the irony is not lost on me that we live in a place with no real spring. And while the weather this time of year is milder and less humid than a hot day in July, it is decidedly not that different from the rest of the year. Being a native Floridian gives me the advantage of understanding what "Spring in South Florida" really looks and feels like and what we need to do at this time of year to tidy up and do a spring cleaning (of sorts). So, this month I offer six things you can do to tidy up for Spring in South Florida.

Give Some Love to Your Air Conditioning Unit. Our air-conditioning units typically run all year long, but Spring is a great time to replace your filters before the even hotter and more humid weather returns. While you are at it, set a reminder on your calendar to do this frequently, every month if you have someone with allergies at home or pets, or less often if not, check your manufacturer's guidelines. Also, when was the last time you had you're A/C unit serviced or had regular maintenance? If you need help remembering, April is a great time to schedule one BEFORE you have a system meltdown.

Reorganize Your Car - By now, you may have taken out some of the key essentials in your car that you will need in South Florida as we transition to Spring and Summer. Let's reload and tidy up a

bit. After getting your vehicle cleaned or doing it yourself, here are a few things to add back in: an umbrella (no one here actually wears a raincoat), a pair of waterproof flip-flops or sandals for when you don't want to ruin your shoes in the rain, a windshield shade to keep the inside of your car cool when parked, some towels to dry off with in case you get soaked, and some insect repellent and sunscreen to apply to the backs of your hands and other places because #skincare.

Outgrown Kids Clothes & Shoes - Even though we don't have a specific change of seasons that requires seasonal clothing, this is still a great time to get rid of outgrown clothes and shoes for your kids, especially swimsuits and shorts, and t-shirts. If you've got a younger sibling at home who could later wear some of these clothes, you can put some of the outgrown clothes into storage, but otherwise, bring clothes that don't fit out of your kids' drawers and closets to allow room for the stuff that does fit. Make a shopping list of what you need to purchase to get the kids through the next 3-6 months.

Reorganize One or More Utility Drawers (aka junk drawers) - We've all got one drawer that becomes a catch-all for tiny items. Let's clean one out now. Once you empty out your drawer, vacuum the inside and wipe out any dust and crumbs. Toss or relocate any items you no longer need or that

36 April 2023| PB Parenting |

don't belong there. Everything else goes back, but this time in an organized manner. Repurpose old small boxes or containers or purchase drawer dividers and inserts to store cords, stamps, and other odds and ends. A nonslip liner would help keep everything in place.

Empty, Organize, and Clean Travel Bags, Work Totes & Purses - It's also a great time to organize our on-the-go bags. Whether you carry a briefcase, backpack, tote, or purse, here are the steps to follow:

• Take everything out, toss trash, and organize items by category.

• Sort smaller items, like pens and clips or lipsticks, into little pouches or purse organizers before you put them back inside.

• Wipe down the exterior with a disinfecting wipe if the purse is made with durable, waterresistant material.

Clean the Garage before Hurricane Season- If you still need to tackle a trouble spot in your garage (or the whole thing) by now, do it! Post-April is no time to try to reorganize your garage in South

Florida. Hurricane season begins June1st, and wouldn't it be nice to be able to pull your car (or two) in for protection and safety. Set up a garage sale to get rid of unwanted items and to make some cash. Sell items online or donate things (there's always someone in need). Let this be your wake-up call. Break it down into sections; if it is too daunting, ask a neighbor for help and, in turn, help them. Hire a professional organizer If you want help.

While Spring may be just a word on the calendar for most of here, it is still a great time of year to tidy up and get ready for the months ahead.
