Surrogacy Motherhood is a journey that, for some mothers, isn’t always an easy path. In today’s society, every woman knows someone who has struggled to become pregnant, 1 in 7 women will suffer with fertility issues and 1 in 4 women will experience a miscarriage. Teresa Rockey and Leila Rodriguez know that journey well. Teresa had her own challenging journey but now is the mother of 3 boys via an egg donor and two surrogates. She met Leila 10 years ago, with two boys via IVF. These personal experiences and challenges led Teresa to found Family Formers, a personalized boutique Surrogacy and Egg Donation agency. Together they have helped hundreds of intended parents throughout their IVF, Surrogacy, and Egg Donation journeys. Surrogates and egg donors are essential for those who cannot create a family on their own. Right now, across the country, there is a critical shortage for caring and compassionate gestational carriers. Intended parents are waiting on average a year to find their 8 May 2022| PB Parenting |

gestational carrier match. In addition to helping women achieve their dreams of creating a family, a first-time gestational carrier can expect to earn a minimum of $45,000 and an experienced carrier can earn up to $100,000. This compassion for helping other women allows for surrogates to be stay at home moms and contribute financially to their household. Stephanie’s Story – “I Will Never Have a Baby without a Gestational Carrier” “You’re meant to be a mother; it just takes time.” “Just take care of yourself and your health and you’ll get pregnant when the time is right.” “Try not to stress out about it and it’ll happen.” The amount of times I heard these phrases or variations of has become tiring. My husband and I have been trying to conceive since 2018. In 2019 we had our first miscarriage. One of four women experience a miscarriage, so I believed it just wasn’t meant to be and I was the one out of four. After trying for 8 months, we finally were pregnant again. I had symptoms

months and no pregnancy, I finally decided to see a fertility specialist. This is when I learned that I had a congenital malformation of my uterus, a unicornuate uterus. It’s half the size of a normal uterus with only one Fallopian tube. Meaning less blood flow and not enough room for the baby to grow and fully develop. My chances of carrying a baby to full term was 50/50, a flip of a coin. After meeting with multiple doctors the consensus was that it was not safe for me to carry, in my case the risks outweighed the benefits.

and was sure this one was going to stick. I couldn’t possibly have another miscarriage back-to-back. I was wrong. We were back to square one tracking my ovulations and timing our intercourse. After 10

Why me? How could this happen to me? I was meant to be a mother. It’s not fair all of my friends who didn’t even want to get pregnant are able to experience it with ease. What did I do to deserve this? It became so hard to be happy for my friends and family who were all having their babies. All I wanted was for us to have ours. Then I fell into a darkness. My husband deserved to be a father more than anyone I knew. I first

myself. I was hurt. I was lost. Thankfully my husband didn’t see it that way. He assured me that I was his family and all that he needed. He pulled me out of the darkness and helped me realize we will be parents it just may not be the traditional way I expected. This was our journey and I had to learn to accept it and find positives rather then dwell on the negatives.

We came to the realization that with IVF and a gestational carrier we could have our baby who will hopefully have his sense of humor and my smile. A very tough idea to swallow for the both of us but we thank God for science and the women out there that are willing to make this possible for us. 10 Ways to Celebrate Mom on Mother’s Day According to the National Retail Federation, Mother’s Day spending is expected to total a record breaking $31.7 billion this year up 3.6 billion from last year. A total 84 percent of Americans will celebrate Mother’s Day and spend an average of $245.76 per person. While traditional gifts such as flowers are up, consumers are also splurging on jewelry and special outings for the women in their lives. Now that pandemic-induced restrictions have loosened, consumers are looking forward to taking moms out for Mother’s Day: 57 percent plan to gift a brunch, dinner or other special outing this Mother’s Day, up from last year’s 49 percent. Others are giving moms the gift of rest and relaxation, with a record 30 percent planning to gift a personal service such as a spa day or massage. Whether it’s a special meal, a day of self-care, a wine tasting or an art class, 12 May 2022| PB Parenting |

consumers are treating moms this Mother’s Day in ways they couldn’t over the last few years. Below are some simple and thoughtful ways to celebrate Mom. Maybe you can subtly leave this list out for someone to find...give them a little hint! 1. Give Mom a Break: Nothing says, “I love you,” like walking into the house and finding your partner has already cleaned it. I love when my son or daughter does chores without being asked. This Mother’s Day, relieve mom of her usual to-do’s by making it your responsibility. Are you too busy to do it yourself? Maybe hire a cleaning service to come in and do a deep clean or gift her a few cleanings for the next couple of months. Help Mom organize the clutter and pick up your toys! Maybe have the kids go through some items to donate. Less items less to clean!

2. Let Mom Sleep: It doesn’t matter if you have a newborn or a 10 year old, or if you are a stay at home mom or a working mom, I am guessing you are sleep deprived. Let mom sleep in, offer to take the children out so she can have a quiet house to rest in. While you are out, pick up some coffee or pastries and come home and surprise her. In the afternoon, let her take a nap. Is the baby still getting up in the middle of the night? Instead of her getting up give her a break and do the nighttime routine. 3. Brunchin’ it: How many times does Mom make pancakes and eggs for everyone? Now it is your turn! Make her favorite items for breakfast. Surprise her with coffee or tea in bed. If cooking isn’t in your skill set, take her somewhere nice to enjoy their cooking or let her have some alone time brunching with her friends. Bonus points if bottomless mimosas are included. 4. Pamper Mom: Moms take care of everyone else’s needs but what about hers? Pampering can fit many gift giving budgets from a full day at the spa (We love Eau Palm) to something as

e m i t r e Su -time si fun

simple as a manicure at her favorite nail salon. You can even pamper her at home with a nice foot rub or run her a bath, light some aroma therapy candles and give her some undisturbed time in the tub. I assure you any thoughtful gesture of some much needed pampering won’t go unnoticed. 5. A Day Together: Set aside all other plans, grab the whole family and head to mom’s favorite park or the beach. Spending the time together (preferably outdoors) is what really counts, so have a picnic, go for a bike ride, take a hike. Enjoy the outdoors together as a family. If mom isn’t the outdoorsy type, take her to the movies or a museum. Just spend the day with her doing something she WANTS to do. 6. Keep the Peace: If you have more than one child you know about the ‘sibling squabbles” and how mom is often a referee in her own home. Talk to your children about a “peace treaty” for the day to give mom a break from the constant back and forth bickering.

7. Plant some flowers. Instead of buying flowers that will die in a week use some extra space in the yard to plant a flower garden for mom. Maybe even look at plants that attract butterflies and make a butterfly garden. An extra bonus present would be to have the kids paint and decorate some rocks (don’t forget to seal them). There are also plaster kits the kids can use to make “stepping stones” with their feet or hand prints that would make some memorable garden keepsakes. 8. Take Mom to the Theatre! There are still a few shows left in the Kravis Broadway Season! Upcoming shows include An Officer and a Gentleman and Summer: The Donna Summer Musical. Take her out for a nice night on the town. Check out www.kravis.org for upcoming shows. 9. Put Mom Back in the picture and schedule a Family Portrait session! Mom takes a lot of photos of the kids but where is she? Make her feel glamorous and schedule a family photo

session. Check out Lynn Studios, Inc www. lynnstudios1.com. When the photo session is finished make sure to frame them nicely or have canvases made to display in your home. 10. Create a piece of treasured art or a craft. If you’re not super creative, the experts can help! Head over to Picasso’s Creative Workshop in Lake Worth and give mom a handmade painted pottery piece (They even have funtional pottery pieces such as cute candle votive holders, jewelry holders and more) or sign the kids up for a fun art class at artNEST in Delray Beach and Boca Raton where they can create mom something special that she can treasure for many years. If mom is a creative herself sign her up for classes and workshops at Lighthouse Arts Center or Armory Arts Center. No matter how you celebrate your Mother’s Day, PB Parenting wishes the best to all the moms out there! We hope you have a relaxing day filled with love and surrounded by your loved ones!

Five Questions to Ask Your Pediatrician at Your Child’s Next Wellness Visit BY STEPHANIE HARIDOPOLOS, M.D., FLORIDA HEALTHY KIDS CORPORATION CHAIR AND BOARD-CERTIFIED FAMILY MEDICINE PRACTITIONER As a parent, ensuring your child’s health and wellness is a top priority and, as a mother of three myself, I understand the stress that can go along with that. Scheduling and keeping routine appointments with a trusted health care provider – like your child’s pediatrician – is one way to make sure your child stays on track and is healthy and happy. Getting your child the best care at an affordable price is a priority from infancy to adolescence. Fortunately, Florida KidCare provides low-cost, high-quality health care coverage options to make sure children throughout the state have access to the necessary health services they need 16 May 2022| PB Parenting |

to grow strong and healthy, both physically and mentally. Beyond the regular childhood concerns like catching a common cold or falling off a bike, children’s mental health also must be examined and treated. Early research has shown the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have impacted children and many are experiencing heightened levels of anxiety and depression that must not be ignored. Talking to your child about mental health provides an opportunity to share important information and guidance. Having an open

dialogue helps decrease the stigma that often surrounds this sensitive topic. Children who are more comfortable talking about mental health concerns are able to better recognize the signs and symptoms in themselves and others, and are more likely to seek earlier treatment and extend more compassion to their peers. In addition to talking to your child about mental health, kids need a regular routine and consistency in their lives to ensure they have a healthy mind. Yet, the typical forms of socialization, like in-person school, still may not be available to everyone. Wellness visits are the perfect opportunity to speak with your child’s pediatrician about their mental health and any concerns you may have that could be affecting their overall well-being. These appointments also give your child the opportunity to check in with a trusted professional and provide additional stability and consistency.

Most parents consider the many questions to ask a pediatrician during a wellness visit about their child’s physical health, yet few consider addressing mental health concerns. Here are five essential questions to ask your pediatrician at your child’s next wellness visit: How do I know if my child is experiencing an anxiety and/or depression disorder? Anxiety and depression disorders refers to multiple mental illnesses with specific symptoms. A child suffering from anxiety or depression may experience chronic symptoms that interfere with daily life — feeling distressed and avoiding certain situations. If you notice your child has had a change in behavior, appetite, loss of concentration or interest in activities, they may be facing an anxiety or depression disorder. What do the behavioral changes my child has been going through mean? During a wellness visit, take time to list your child’s symptoms –

such as mood swings, social skills impairment, restlessness or problematic behaviors like tantrums – so they can be discussed with a pediatrician. Notifying your child’s pediatrician of changes in behavior may help diagnose anxiety disorders sooner. Having an open line of communication with your child’s pediatrician is the first step to learning more about their mental health. Is there treatment available for my child? Finding help from a doctor who makes your child feel comfortable is an important component in receiving effective treatment. It is vital to find a permanent medical home for your child so they receive consistent, trusted care. In addition to prescription medications, effective forms

of therapy may aid in helping your child cope with anxiety or depression disorder. Ask your pediatrician if they have training and experience in treating anxiety disorders or if they can refer you to another health care professional. How will this diagnosis affect my child in school or other social settings? If untreated, anxiety and depression disorders often lead to poor performance in school and underdeveloped social skills. If your child is struggling, acknowledge their disorder with school administrators so accommodations can be made and teachers can monitor your child to keep you informed. How can I help my child at home? If your

child has been diagnosed with an anxiety or depression disorder, it can be worrisome for you as a parent. Rather than tread lightly around your child and avoid their mental health disorder, work toward helping them manage it. Implementing structure is a great way to support your child, through such things as a bedtime routine. When addressing your child’s health, it is just as important to seek mental health treatment as it is to treat physical health problems. It is critical to find a pediatrician who makes you and your child feel comfortable, especially when there’s a need for mental health guidance. Florida KidCare offers affordable health care coverage for children with a network of high-quality providers across the state where your child can establish a consistent

medical home for necessary care. To learn more about Florida KidCare’s benefits and service and the importance of caring for children’s mental health, visit floridakidcare.org. DAY CAMP CHECKLIST • Mask (with it being hot for summer pack a couple so your child can swap them out if they get wet or sweat) Check the camp's mask policy. • Hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes

• Extra set of clothes (especially a pair of socks and shirt if they get wet from the rain) • Rain poncho (rolls up small) • Medication: All camps should have your child’s medical information on file. Having an extra note with details in their backpack and attached to their Prescription medication and/or Epi-Pen is helpful.

• Sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 45 • Insect repellant wipes and/or insect repellent wristband (do not send an aerosol can of insect repellant–the spray will sting if it gets in your child’s eyes.) • Bathing suit and towel • Water bottle filled with ice-cold water • Hat and Sunglasses • Comfortable running shoes or closed-toe sports sandals WITH socks

• Food: Some day camps will provide lunch and snacks. If you pack a lunch it should be easy to eat on the ground. A sandwich (avoid peanut butter since most camps are nut-free), fruit and a juice box or water makes for a healthy lunch. Granola bars make an excellent snack. Some camps may have snack bars or vending machines. Notify the camp of any food allergies your child may have.

TRAVELS & Places to go 6 Popular Hotel Amenities for 2022 How travelers' preferences changed over the years If you haven't planned a trip in a while, you aren't alone. Many Americans haven't taken a proper vacation in almost three years. In that time, many travelers' preferences have changed. "The pandemic impacted nearly every aspect of our lives, including how we search for our next hotel stay," said Mel Dohmen, senior brand manager at Hotels.com. "The amenities we love and are looking for in 2022 reflect everything we've felt and experienced over the past few years." To identify some of the most in-demand (and out of touch) amenities so far this year, Hotels.com analyzed searches on its site and mobile app from the past three years as part of its 2022 Amenity Report. When booking your next stay, be on the lookout for hotels with these amenities: Stress-Free Soaking Hotels with bathtubs were the most-searched amenity during the peak of the pandemic. As 34 May 2022| PB Parenting |

travelers are looking for self-care options while on the go, searches for hotels with bathtubs and spas have grown more than 25%, compared with 2019. Prioritizing Time Off the Clock While travelers prioritized properties with remote work amenities pre-pandemic, searches for hotels with free Wi-Fi and business facilities have fallen 40% or more so far this year compared with 2019. Focusing on Family Time Many families missed out on quality vacation time together the past several years. Looking to make up for lost time, searches for hotels with cribs, child care and connecting rooms have increased by double-digit percentages compared with 2019. Four-legged family members are also included, as interest in pet-friendly stays is up 35% this year. Bringing Back Breakfast Once one of the top amenities, free breakfast

buffets fell a few pegs amid the pandemic in favor of pre-packaged grab-and-go items. This year, however, searches for hotels with free breakfast are up 75%. Working Out While on the Go Working out really wasn't a top priority for many travelers during the height of the pandemic. In 2021, searches for hotels with gyms were down more than 30% compared with 2019. However, in 2022, year-over-year searches for gyms increased by 65% as travelers are getting back into their wellness routines.

Top Destinations For Memorial Day Weekend include Big Cities and Beaches Travelers are targeting big cities and beaches for their Memorial Day getaways this year. These are the top 10 domestic destinations according to AAA bookings for flights, tours, car rentals and hotels: 1. Orlando, FL 2. Seattle, WA 3. Miami, FL 4. Las Vegas, NV

Parking for Free As travelers continue to favor destinations within driving distance, searches for free parking are up 70% this year. For those who are taking to the skies, properties with free airport transfers are up 105%, as well.
