10 Ways to Celebrate Mom on Mother’s Day

According to the National Retail Federation, Mother’s Day spending is expected to be a total of $35.7 billion this year, nearly $4 billion more than last year’s record high of $31.7 billion. A total 84 percent of Americans will celebrate Mother’s Day and spend an average of $274.92 per person. Of those celebrating Mother’s Day, most (57%) are purchasing gifts for a mother or stepmother, followed by a wife (23%) or daughter (12%). As seen in previous years, the most popular gifts to give are flowers (74%), greeting cards (74%) and special outings such as dinner or brunch (60%). Consumers will spend a total of $7.8 billion on jewelry, $5.6 billion on special outings and $4 billion on electronics.

Still, consumers continue to prioritize thoughtful gifts. Respondents said the most important factors in purchasing a Mother’s Day gift include finding items that are unique or different (47%)

or those that create a special memory (42%).

Below are some simple and thoughtful ways to celebrate Mom. Maybe you can subtly leave this list out for someone to find...give them a little hint!

1. Give Mom a Break: Nothing says, “I love you,” like walking into the house and finding your partner has already cleaned it. I love when my son or daughter does chores without being asked. This Mother’s Day, relieve mom of her usual to-do’s by making it your responsibility. Are you too busy to do it yourself? Maybe hire a cleaning service to come in and do a deep clean or gift her a few cleanings for the next couple of months. Help Mom organize the clutter and pick up your toys! Maybe have the kids go through some items to donate. Less items less to clean!

2. Let Mom Sleep: It doesn’t matter if you have a newborn or a 10 year old, or if you are a stay at home mom or a working mom, I am guessing you are sleep deprived. Let mom sleep in, offer to take the children out so she can have a quiet house to rest in. While you are out, pick up some coffee or pastries and come home and surprise her. In the afternoon, let her take a nap. Is the baby still getting up in the middle of the night? Instead of her getting up give her a break and do the nighttime routine.

3. Brunchin’ it: How many times does Mom make pancakes and eggs for everyone? Now it is your turn! Make her favorite items for breakfast. Surprise her with coffee or tea in bed. If cooking isn’t in your skill set, take her somewhere nice to enjoy their cooking or let her have some alone time brunching with her friends. Bonus points if bottomless mimosas are included.

4. Pamper Mom: Moms take care of everyone else’s needs but what about hers? Pampering can fit many gift giving budgets from a full day at the spa (We love Eau Palm) to something as

simple as a manicure at her favorite nail salon. You can even pamper her at home with a nice foot rub or run her a bath, light some aroma therapy candles and give her some undisturbed time in the tub. I assure you any thoughtful gesture of some much needed pampering won’t go unnoticed.

5. A Day Together: Set aside all other plans, grab the whole family and head to mom’s favorite park or the beach. Spending the time together (preferably outdoors) is what really counts, so have a picnic, go for a bike ride, take a hike. Enjoy the outdoors together as a family. If mom isn’t the outdoorsy type, take her to the movies or a museum. Just spend the day with her doing something she WANTS to do.

6. Keep the Peace: If you have more than one child you know about the ‘sibling squabbles” and how mom is often a referee in her own home. Talk to your children about a “peace treaty” for the day to give mom a break from the constant back and forth bickering.

7. Plant some flowers. Instead of buying flowers that will die in a week use some extra space in the yard to plant a flower garden for mom. Maybe even look at plants that attract butterflies and make a butterfly garden. An extra bonus present would be to have the kids paint and decorate some rocks (don’t forget to seal them). There are also plaster kits the kids can use to make “stepping stones” with their feet or hand prints that would make some memorable garden keepsakes.

8. Take Mom to the Theatre! There are some great shows coming in May and June including the Broadway musical, Legally Blonde, Comedian Nikki Glaser, and musician Tori Amos. Take her out for a nice night on the town maybe make reservations for a nice dinner at Chef Lindsay Autry's restaurant The Regional (right next door). Check out www.kravis.org for upcoming shows.

9. Put Mom Back in the picture and schedule a Family Portrait session! Mom takes a lot of photos of the kids but where is she? Make her feel glamorous and schedule a family photo

session. Check out Lynn Studios, Inc www. lynnstudios1.com. When the photo session is finished make sure to frame them nicely or have canvases made to display in your home.

10. Create a piece of treasured art or a craft. If you’re not super creative, the experts can help! Head over to Picasso’s Creative Workshop in Lake Worth and give mom a handmade painted pottery piece (They even have funtional pottery pieces such as cute candle votive holders, jewelry holders and more) or sign the kids up for a fun art class at artNEST in Delray Beach and Boca Raton where they can create mom something special that she can treasure for many years. If mom is a creative herself sign her up for classes and workshops at Lighthouse Arts Center or Armory Arts Center.

No matter how you celebrate your Mother’s Day, PB Parenting wishes the best to all the moms out there! We hope you have a relaxing day filled with love and surrounded by your loved ones!

What Is Therapy?

Many children and teens have problems that affect how they feel, act, or learn. Therapy is a type of treatment for these problems. It is a way to get help for your child.

How Does Therapy Help Kids?

Therapy can help kids get through tough times and build resilience.

In therapy, kids talk and learn how to work out their problems. Going to therapy helps them cope better, communicate better, and do better.

What Problems Do Therapists Help With?

Therapists are trained to help with all kinds of problems. For example, they help kids and teens going through tough times like: family problems, school problems, bullying, and health problems. They help with feelings like: sadness, anger, stress and worry, low selfesteem and grief. They help kids and teens with conditions like: ADHD, depression, OCD and anxiety, eating disorders, self-injury, disruptive behavior disorders and trauma-related disorders.

Why Do Kids and Teens Need Therapy?

Kids and teens need therapy when they have problems they can't cope with alone. Or they need help when problems affect how well they do, feel, or act. If things don't get better on their own, kids may need therapy so things

can improve. Sometimes, entire families need support while trying to communicate, learn, and create boundaries.

How Does Therapy Work?

In therapy, kids learn by doing. With younger kids, this means working with the whole family, drawing, playing, and talking. For older kids and teens, therapists share activities and ideas that focus on learning the skills they need. They talk through feelings and solve problems.

Therapists give praise and support as kids learn. They help kids believe in themselves and find their strengths. Therapy builds helpful thinking patterns and healthy behavioral habits.

A therapist might meet with the child and parent together or meet with the child alone. It depends on the child's age. A therapist might also meet with a parent to give tips and ideas

for how to help their child at home.

What Happens in Therapy?

At first, the therapist will meet with you and your child to talk. They will ask questions and listen. This helps them learn more about your child and about the problem. The therapist will tell you how they can help.

After that, your child will go to more therapy visits. At these visits, your child might:

• Talk. Talking is a healthy way to express feelings. When kids put feelings into words instead of actions, they can act their best. When someone listens and knows how they feel, kids are more ready to learn.

• Do activities. Therapists use activities to teach about feelings and coping skills. They may have kids draw or play as a way to learn. They may teach mindfulness and calm breathing as a way to lower stress.

• Practice new skills. Therapists help kids

Tues - Fri: 12pm-4pm Sat: 10am-4pm Sun: 12pm-4pm

• Solve problems. With older kids and teens, therapists ask how problems affect them at home, at school. They talk over how to solve these problems.

How Long Do Kids Do Therapy?

How long therapy lasts depends on the goals you and your child's therapist have. Most of the time, a therapist will want to meet with your child once a week for a few months.

How Can Parents Help?

You can do things to help your child get the most from therapy. Here are some of them:

• Find a therapist you and your child feel comfortable with. Your child's health care team can help you find someone.

• Take your child to all the appointments. Change takes time. It takes many therapy visits for your child to learn new skills and keep them up.

• Meet with your child's therapist. Ask what to do when your child shows problems at home. Ask how to help your child do well.

• Spend time with your child. Play, cook, read, or laugh together. Do this every day, even if it's only for a few minutes.

• Parent with patience and warmth. Use kind words, even when you need to correct your child. Show love. Give praise when your child is doing well or trying hard.

Tips for a Successful Day Camp Experience

• Apply sunscreen before leaving home - send a bottle for reapplication and pack a hat.

ª Bring two water bottles one that is frozen to enjoy later as it melts.

• Label items brought to camp so they don't get lost

• Do not bring valuable items like electronics

Warmer months are likely to have the whole family eager to dive into outdoor activities. This year, as you tackle the garden, find ways to get the youngest family members in on the action, too.

Not only is gardening an activity you can enjoy together, there are numerous ways to incorporate age-appropriate, teachable moments from counting and colors to responsible care of living things.

Creating a positive first experience with gardening can start with this simple advice:

• Dedicate a spot for a junior garden, which allows you to instill a sense of pride and ownership in the little gardener while protecting your own garden areas from ambitious young hands.

• Provide appropriate tools in child sizes. Just as you would teach a child the finer points of baseball using a bat and glove, demonstrate the joys of gardening with tools such as a rake, hoe and trowel, all of which can be found in sizes more

Fun Advice to Introduce Kids to Gardening

manageable for little helpers.

• Let the kids choose what to plant. Whether flowers or food plants, allow children to make their own decisions (within reason) about what they would like to grow. This can help them engage in the magic of watching items they selected emerge from the ground and grow into their finished forms.

• Encourage exposure to unfamiliar plants that entice the senses with appealing smells and flavors. Herbs such as chives, mint and basil are good choices, or consider edible flowers such as pansies or violets.

• Set an example for your child to imitate by giving regular and proper care to your own garden.

Remember to bring the lesson full circle by enjoying the bounty of your garden together, whether it’s a small hand-cut bouquet or a meal featuring your child’s fresh-grown produce. Find more tips for gardening with your kids at eLivingtoday.com. (Family Features)

What to plant in South Florida?

South Florida has a unique climate - it is best to choose herbs, plants and veggies that can tolerate the heat!

Here are suggestions on what to plant in the next upcoming months from Environmental Horticulture Department, UF/IFAS Extension

May: Plant heat-loving herbs like basil, Mexican tarragon, ginger, cumin, rosemary. Vegetables - sweet potatoes, boniato, hot peppers and tropical "spinach" such as Sisso, Malabar and New Zealand.

June: Flowering plants that can take full sun during the increasingly hot summer months include celosia, portulaca, vinca, pentas, and some coleus. Plant heat-loving herbs, including basil, ginger, summer savory, cumin, Mexican tarragon, and rosemary. Summer's warm, rainy months are the perfect time to plant palms. Make sure not to cover the trunk with soil.

July: While summer is too hot to start herbs from seeds, many, such as oregano and mint, do well if started from small plants. Bulbs: Butterfly lily and gladiolus are bulbs that can be planted during the middle of summer. Plant tropical vegetables, such as boniato, calabaza, and chayote this month. Continue planting palms while the rainy season is in full swing. Support large palms with braces for 6–8 months after planting. Do not drive nails directly into a palm trunk.

August: Start planting eggplant, okra, peppers, pumpkin, squashes, and tomatoes for the fall garden. Herbs that can be planted from plants (not seeds) include bay laurel, ginger, Mexican tarragon, and rosemary.

According to AAA booking data, international travel is up more than 200% compared to 2022. Hotel bookings are seeing the biggest jump, up more than 300% over last year. The spike in demand is driving up airfares. Ticket prices for international trips are up more than 30%. “Travelers are making up for lost time and willing to spend more to see the world,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of Travel at AAA.

“If you do your homework and rely on travel experts, like AAA travel advisors, there are deals to be had. But the key is giving yourself plenty of time to plan ahead.” Europe and Canada are the most popular international destinations, per AAA’s data. London tops the list, with a nearly 350% increase over last year. Rome, Paris, Dublin, and Barcelona are other European hot spots. Vancouver, Toronto, and Calgary are the most popular Canadian destinations.

From Globetrotters to First Timers, Travelers are Seeing the World in 2023

AAA shares booking data, top destinations, and travel advice

International trips are on the rise

“There’s nothing like going abroad. Personally, I just renewed my passport for a long overdue trip to see family in the United Kingdom,” Twidale added. “There’s excitement this year for international travel but also a lot of questions about everything from passports to travel insurance.”

10 Ways to Prepare for International Travel

Prioritize Your Passport

You can’t travel internationally without a passport. If you don’t have one, apply ASAP! The U.S. Department of State issues passports, and routine service normally takes 8 to 11 weeks. But pandemic-related application backlogs coupled with a surge in travel demand are leading to longer wait times, anywhere from 10 to 13 weeks. Even some expedited services are seeing delays of about 7 to 9 weeks. If you already have a passport, check the expiration date. Some countries require

34 May 2023| PB Parenting |

passports be valid for six months beyond your departure date from the United States. Your destination might also require a travel visa.

Follow The Leader

First-time travelers – or people who haven’t been abroad in years – greatly benefit from guided tours, where an expert is the one leading the way. Guided tours are a great way to explore the world without the stress of planning daily itineraries. According to AAA Member Choice Vacations, the most popular tours for new travelers are London & Paris, British Landscapes, and Ireland.

rising in popularity. Club Adventures by AAA, says Antarctica, Costa Rica, Iceland, Peru, Morocco, and Vietnam are destinations in high demand. They say more travelers are seeking authenticity and connection on their international trips. “Today’s travelers are reshaping what it means to connect with a destination. They are seeking authenticity and understanding, they long to see the world through a local lens,” said Allison Villasenor, Club Adventures Managing Director.

Unpack Once, See The World

Travelers wanting to experience multiple destinations without staying at multiple hotels are booking cruises. This year, cruising is in high demand. AAA booking data shows cruises departing from international destinations are up 30% compared to 2022. Cruises sailing in Nothern Europe, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean are among the most popular.

Renting A Car? You’ll Need This

Many countries require an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive legally. An IDP is a valid form of identification that includes your name, photo, and driver information. Even if a country doesn’t require an IDP, your rental car company might. An IDP must be issued in the same country as the driver’s license of the traveler and may not be issued more than six months before the desired effective date. AAA is one of only two private entities in the U.S. authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue an IDP.

Protect Your Investment

Travel insurance is always a good idea but even more so if you’re traveling internationally.

Protecting your trip is highly recommended in case of trip delay, expenses incurred from missed flights, lost luggage, or medical expenses due to illness or injury. The best way to determine what type of coverage you need is by reaching out to a trusted travel advisor, like a AAA Travel Agent. That person will help you choose the right plan to gain a clear understanding as to which policy (your personal health coverage or your travel insurance company’s coverage) is primary or secondary. It’s important to know how much coverage the policy offers and what is and is not covered.

Ways to save

One of the best ways to save money on international travel is to be flexible with your dates. Traveling during the off-season can mean better deals and fewer crowds. For example, going to Europe in October or February can save you money on airfare and lodging. Another way to spend less is flying on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Mid-week flights tend to be cheaper, as many airlines add weekend surcharges. When booking a hotel, try to avoid properties in the city center, which tend to be pricier. Also, find out how much the hotel charges in resort fees, parking, and internet — all of that adds up!

Enroll In Step

Download the State Department’s Smart Traveler app for detailed information regarding countries around the world and up-to-date travel advisories. While you’re on the app or on the State Department website, enroll in STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) to notify the State Department of your trip, so they can alert you of any unrest or advisories at your destination.

Take It From The Pros

AAA Diamonds Inspectors know a thing or two about travel. They log thousands of miles every year, inspecting hotels and restaurants, verifying the 4Cs of AAA Diamonds: Cleanliness, Comfort, Cuisine, and Consistency. Here are some pro tips from AAA Inspectors on international travel.

“Notify your credit card company of your trip and check foreign transaction fees. Use ATMs instead of exchange houses and always choose local currency if given the choice with credit card transactions.”

“Take a photo or make a copy of your passport and keep that with you. Secure your physical passport in the hotel safe while you’re sightseeing.”

“If traveling with a significant other or close friend, split your clothes into two bags, so if one suitcase is delayed or lost, you both have clothing. If traveling alone, put a few clothing items in your carry-on.”

”If you’re checking a suitcase and carrying on a roller bag, put the heaviest items in your carry-

on. That way, you avoid paying an overweight fee on your suitcase, and if the airline forces you to check your carry-on anyway because there’s no overhead bin space, you won’t have to pay a checked bag fee either.”

“Compression socks for the flight!”

“Divide your cash into separate purses or pockets. In the unlikely event you are robbed, all your money won’t be taken.”

“To help with jet lag: Avoid caffeine and alcohol on the flight. If it’s daylight when you arrive, stay outside as much as possible to get natural light exposure. Avoid naps and try to stay awake until a normal sleeping hour at your destination.”

The month of May ushers in a whole lot of “occasions”—Mother’s Day, graduations, Father’s Day, weddings, etc. Now is the perfect time to make sure your gift giving supplies are organized and easily accessible.

Below are 5 easy ways to get your supplies organized now and save you lots of time and energy all season long.

1. One of my favorite ways to organize and store gift bags and boxes is vertically in a large basket.  You can easily see how many you have and quickly find and grab the one you want without having to sort through piles.

2. For small to medium bags and boxes, magazine holders are a fast and easy solution.

3. If you don’t keep a lot of gift-wrapping supplies on hand and prefer an all-in-one option, a gift wrap bag from Ikea is a great and affordable option.  It keeps all your supplies in one convenient, easy-tocarry storage bag which can fit under a bed. If you have space in a closet, perhaps a hanging organizer would be better for you.

4. Laundry hampers aren't just for laundry anymore. If you live in a small space and don't have a whole closet to devote to wrapping supplies, a laundry basket tucked somewhere discrete will still

do the trick. Choose one that doesn’t taper towards the bottom to maximize capacity. A large umbrella stand can also be a gift wrap holder.

5. Are you a maximalist when it comes to gift giving and have LOTS of gift wrapping supplies? Then maybe it’s time to splurge and invest in a gift wrap station from The Container Store.

Here’s a bonus organization hack to stop gift wrap rolls from unravelling. Gift wrap rolls are long, awkward and tend to unwind and tear. Use an inexpensive slap bracelet (found at a Dollar Store or online) around the roll. For a free option, cut a slit in a toilet paper roll and use it as a cuff.

Happy gift giving, Amy
