10 Ways To Keep Cool When It’s Hot Wow it is hot out! It is hard to keep your cool in South Florida when temperatures reach the mid 90s for the next few months. It is important to stay cool not only for your comfort but your safety. Dangerously high temperatures can result in heat-related illnesses ranging from heat cramps to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The following tips can help you keep cool all summer long. 1. Beat the sun and heat with an early morning or evening activity or workout. 2. Try to stay in the shade when outdoors during peak sunlight. 3. Wear loose-fitting clothing, preferably of a light color. Also cotton clothing will keep you cooler than many synthetics. 4. Fill a spray bottle with water and keep it in the refrigerator for a quick refreshing spray to your face after being outdoors or take it on the go with you! 5. Fans can help circulate air and make you feel cooler even in an air-conditioned house. 6. Try storing lotions or cosmetic toners in the refrigerator to use on hot, overtired feet. 8 July 2022| PB Parenting |

7. Keep plastic bottles of water in the freezer; grab one when you’re ready to go outside. As the ice melts, you’ll have a supply of cold water with you. 8. Take frequent baths or showers with cool or tepid water. 9. Combat dehydration by drinking plenty of water along with sports drinks or other sources of electrolytes. Avoid caffeine and alcohol as these will promote dehydration. 10. Instead of hot foods, try lighter summer fare including frequent small meals or snacks containing cold fruit or low fat dairy products. As an added benefit, you won’t have to cook next to a hot stove. Finally, use common sense. If the heat is intolerable, stay indoors when you can and avoid activities in direct sunlight or on hot asphalt surfaces. Pay special attention to the elderly, infants, and anyone with a chronic illness, as they may dehydrate easily and be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Don’t forget that pets also need protection from dehydration and heat-related illnesses too.

Give The Slide The Slip: Fun Ways To Engage Kids’ Minds In the Summer BY TANNI HAAS, PH.D. Do your kids seem a little less ready for school after each summer break? If the answer is yes, don’t worry. They’re far from alone. It’s a common experience known as the “summer learning slide.” Research shows that kids typically lose the equivalent of a month’s worth of learning over the summer break - and it gets worse the older they get! So, what can parents do to give the slide the slip? Here are seven fun activities that have worked for our teenage son, and I bet they’ll help your kids, too. Read A Fiction and A Non-Fiction Book Every Other Week -Since our son learned to read, we’ve had him read one fiction and one non-fiction book every other week to keep his reading and comprehension skills at grade level. It’s summer after all, so instead of assigning him books like he’s used to from school, we let him choose what to read. 10 July 2022| PB Parenting |

Keep A Vacation Journal - We take at least one big family vacation trip every summer, and since our son was very young we’ve had him keep a daily journal where he writes about what we did that day. It’s been a great way to keep his writing skills up-to-date and document his childhood. Email Family and Friends - To strengthen our son’s writing skills, we also have him email family and friends, especially those people we don’t get to see that much during the year. Teenagers prefer texting, but we insist that he emails them because texts are usually full of broken sentences, odd grammar, and spelling mistakes. Play Math-Based Board Games - In the evening, whether we’re on a family vacation trip or at home, we play math games like Monopoly or spelling games like Scrabble. The key is to focus on the fun part - the competition - rather than the learning. If you do that, the learning will happen automatically.

Watch Feature and Documentary Movies Aside from playing a board game or two, we also watch movies in the evening. With all the streaming services available, it’s not that hard to find a documentary or feature film, which also happens to be educational. Movies are some of the most fun ways to learn about other time periods, cultures, and current events.

history, and natural science. It doesn’t matter whether you live in a big or a small city. Even the smallest town often has a museum Download Educational Apps - Although we try nearby. Going to make our son’s summer activities as social as to the local possible, we also indulge his interest in anything town museum technological, like letting him download all the and learning educational apps he wants. He really likes quiz about your own apps, which like the board game Trivial Pursuit, history can be is great for developing kids’ general knowledge. surprisingly fun. Visit Arts, History, and Natural Science Museums - Museum visits are another great way to keep your kids up-to-date with the arts,

Preparing Kids for Hurricanes Hurricane season is already gearing up. Here are some tips from KidsHealth® on how to help prepare your family and help your kids deal with the stress and emotions of an impending and possible storm. ______________________________________ Hurricanes can be scary — for grown-ups and kids alike. Kids learn how to respond to situations based on the behaviors and attitudes of those around them. Here are some tips to help them — and you — be ready during hurricane season. Talk About Hurricanes Kids might be confused about what a hurricane is, so use simple age-appropriate descriptions of what to expect if one is coming your way. For a younger child, you might say, “A hurricane is a tropical storm with very strong winds and lots of rain, lightning, and thunder.” It’s also important to tell kids that grown-ups will do their best to keep them safe. Try to Remain Calm Yourself Kids can easily sense the emotions of those around them. When a parent seems overly upset or worried, this can make a child’s own fears or worries worse. 14 July 2022| PB Parenting |

Let Kids Help With Pre-storm Preparations Keeping them busy can help keep kids’ minds off of their worries. Helping prepare in ageappropriate ways also can increase a child’s sense of control over the situation. To involve your kids Prepare a family disaster emergency kit. Kids can help collect canned goods and get flashlights ready. Have your kids help bring outdoor items inside. Discuss your family’s disaster plan together. Will you need to evacuate — and what would that look like? Which grown-ups will do what? This will help kids know what to expect. During the Storm Let kids pick a few comfort items, nonelectronic games, and toys in case of power outages. Try to keep as normal a routine as possible. This can help children feel calm and safe. Encourage kids to talk about their feelings or thoughts about what’s happening. Some kids might prefer not to talk right away — and that’s OK too. Spend time together and let them know that you’re there when they’re ready.

After the Storm Monitor media exposure. There can be “too much coverage” leading up to and especially after a hurricane hits. These images might be too much for young eyes and sensitive hearts. Let children help with clean-up. Pay attention to signs of stress, including nightmares, regressive behavior/acting younger than their age, and extra clinginess. These are common in children who’ve gone through a traumatic event. If you see any of these signs, talk to your doctor and know that trained counselors can help. © 1995-2022. Sweet Summer Treats that Beat the Heat

Whether your family’s ideal summer day consists of swimming, hiking, biking or simply enjoying the sunshine, all that time in the heat calls for a sweet way to cool off. It’s hard to beat a homemade treat loaded with favorite summertime flavors that’s as cold and creamy as it is sweet and delicious. For a lighter, better-for-you solution, this Watermelon Gelato has about half the fat and fewer calories than traditional ice cream but with equally mouthwatering flavor. In fact, the word “gelato” means “ice cream” in Italian, and while the two frozen desserts have much in common, gelato is typically lower in fat with more density.

When a summer weekend offers opportunities for morning kitchen lessons with the kiddos, they can help measure ingredients for Watermelon Ice Cream Bars and watch the magic happen as you mix up a watermelon curd, homemade crust and whipped cream. Once your creation freezes completely throughout the day, turn out and cut into bars for a cold afternoon treat following all that fun in the sun.

While sweet and tasty, these desserts also provide a bite of hydration with the power of watermelon, which is 92% water for a delicious way to rehydrate. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, daily fluid intake is defined as the amount of water If you’re looking for an added touch of tastiness, consumed from foods, plain drinking water and try adding a few chocolate chips to the mix in the other beverages, meaning you don’t have to last few minutes of churning in your ice cream rely only on what you drink to meet your fluid maker, or simply add some on top before serving. needs. 24 July 2022| PB Parenting |
