Letter From

Publisher

Greetings, Happy November! I can't believe the holidays are fast approaching. I am not ready and feel very unorganized - Luckily, local professional organizer Amy Bergman has some handy tips to help me get my home and life ready. I also have done ZERO holiday shopping. If you are like me, don't panic; check out our Local Holiday Gift Guide with some fun gift ideas and a great way to support local businesses.

Let's not skip over Thanksgiving, though. It is a great time to reflect on what we are thankful for and help our children learn to express thankfulness. For tips on how to instill these values, check out page 8.

The holiday season also means germ season! RSV cases are up in the community, and our friends at After Hours Pediatrics have tips about RSV to help if your child becomes sick. Hopefully, everyone will stay healthy!

The staff here at PB Parenting hopes you have a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday! We are thankful for all our readers, community partners, and supporters; without you, we would not be entering our 12th year of being your trusted local parenting resource! Thank you again!

Happy Parenting,

Ways to be Thankful

• For Children (and Adults) of All Ages

Thankful: adjective thank·ful : glad that something has happened or not happened, that something or someone exists, etc. : of, relating to, or expressing thanks

Does it seem that children today don’t know the meaning of being thankful? We live in a consumer based, technology driven world and sometimes life flashes by so quick. We are in such a hurry that we often don’t have to stop and be polite and thankful for the world around us.

Here are some tips on how to help your child show thankfulness and maybe a refresher for adults too!

1. Just say thank you: Practice using role-play using good manners and saying “thank you” using stuffed animals and action figures.

2. Start a tradition: Not just for Thanksgiving Day but every week. At dinner time ask everyone to share at least one thing they are grateful for.

3. Be an example to younger children. You may not know it but they are watching you. Adults and older children can set a good example.

4. Hug Someone! Tell them that you are thankful for them being in your life.

5. Say thank-you with cookies. Prepare and deliver a homemade “thank you” to your local fire or police department, or your pediatrician’s or dentist’s office.

6. Help out without being asked. Make it a goal to do so once a day — and for any member of the family.

7. Thank a teacher or coach. Send a handwritten note to let him know how much his efforts make a difference.

8. Volunteer a Saturday. Think food pantry or animal shelter, and try to make it a regular commitment.

9. Pay it forward in the drive-thru lane. Use your own money to pay for someone else’s meal.

10. Create a Thanksgiving scrapbook. Ask everyone to jot down their thoughts or contribute a photo on Thanksgiving day. Be sure to update it and add to it each year.

11. Encourage generosity. Together donate toys and clothes to the less fortunate.

12. Thank your children when they do something kind or good. Show thankfulness to the ones closest to you (spouse, friends, relatives) so they know gratitude isn’t just for strangers.

At Thanksgiving, we often reflect on what we are thankful for; some families may even go around the dinner table and share. Paula and Felipe have much to be thankful for, as they now have a child to share their home. Here is the story of their journey and how thankful they are to those who helped them on the way.

As a young lady, at the age of 18, I found out that I couldn’t have children because of vaginal agenesis due to Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome. Since that moment, I knew that my journey to become a mother was going to be different from other women.

When I met Felipe, I found the ideal partner to join me on this journey. We got married and guided by our dream to start our family, we immediately initiated the process to understand what the best option for us would be to have children. The first step we took was creating our embryos with a fertility clinic while we evaluated the options of having a uterus transplant or looking for a gestational surrogate. We are a Colombian family, and in Colombia, this process is very complex given that there’s a gray area in the law that parentage via surrogacy is difficult to prove, which is why we looked into doing the surrogacy process in the United States.

Thanks to the contact Boca Fertility gave us, we had the pleasure of meeting Family Formers. Leila, Teresa, and all of their team guided us throughout the whole process so that we could have our dear Matilde in our arms today. Their openness and readiness to do things differently, along with their involvement in the process, was inarguably the reason for all of our success in this process. Emotionally, it was not an easy journey since we suffered the loss of Matilde’s twin sister along the way, and Matilde was born prematurely. However, Family Formers’ support was vital, not only because of their human warmth throughout the difficult moments but also their assistance in all decisionmaking.

Today, Matilde is a completely healthy and happy little girl. We, as parents, thank God for putting Family Formers in our path. Now, we once again are beginning the process of having Matilde’s little brother along with them.

Thank you, Leila, Teresa, Gerardo, and the rest of the team, because today, our dreams have become a reality with your genuine and loving help.

Forever grateful, Paula, Felipe & Matilde

Happy November! The holidays are upon us--- no need to get overwhelmed. Here are five things you can do now before things get crazy. By organizing and decluttering these few categories, your holiday season can be enjoyable for everyone, even you!

1. Common Areas & Guest Spaces: Declutter these areas in your home now in anticipation of guests for gatherings or visiting. Pair down all the accessories and decor in your home to make way for your holiday decorations. Store any extra random coffee table books, knickknacks, and picture frames in a box that you can access after the holidays to reset. Will you be expecting overnight guests? Start clearing out that extra bedroom (and its closet or a bureau) for your guests. Check on the state of your guest towels and sheets, and assess whether or not you need to buy some new ones or freshen up with what you have in the laundry.

2. Toys and Games: We all know that gifts are coming and this includes lots of toys and games. Now is the time to go through everything that you already have in your house. Include your kids in the process of deciding what is not really cherished and being used, and what could go to someone else who may appreciate it more. This will help make way for all the new and fun things.

3. Dates and Lists: This is the time when you need to finalize any of your holiday gift-giving lists (don’t

Let’s Get Organized for the Holidays!

forget teachers, letter carriers, service people, etc.). Here are some templates for holiday gift lists. Go through your family calendar and make sure important dates are there, including holiday gettogethers, school concerts, performances, visits from relatives, trips, etc. Make sure everyone knows where to view this calendar with all of the special occasions you plan on attending for the next two months. If sending holiday cards, update your address or email list now. Decide on a photo or stock image to use and order your cards or design your e-card now. Check on your stock of wrapping paper tape and holiday cards, buy what you need now.

4. Closets and Cars: Celebrating the holidays means attending lots of different special meals and occasions. Look at your closet now, as well as your kids’ closets, and decide what fits and what needs to be cleaned or mended. Also, make sure that there are appropriate shoes and accessories for these outfits. This will help you decide what items need to be purchased. Take any outgrown clothes, or those that are no longer wanted, to a donation site now to clear up space. Next, let’s talk about cars. There will be lots of traveling and road trips in the next two months. Let’s clear out all the trash now and make sure that your car is stocked with what you will need to so everyone is happy on the road this holiday season. This includes snacks, empty trash bags, hand wipes, hand sanitizer,

14 November 2022| PB Parenting |

waters, blankets/pillows, electronic chargers, games, and even some basic gift wrap for lastminute gifts (think a gift bag and a bow). Here’s a great list of how to stock your car.

5. Pets: Make arrangements for your pets now if you plan on going away or traveling during the holiday season. Amyzing Spaces provides professional organization for your home & office! RSV: What You Should Know

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced increased activity of respiratory syncytial virus, known as RSV, across parts of the Southern U.S. Here is what parents and caregivers should know.

What is RSV?

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) causes symptoms of a cold in school-aged children and adults, but can also cause bronchospasm (wheezing, wheezy cough) in infants through toddlers.

When does RSV commonly occur?

RSV is typically a fall and winter virus, but it can occur at any time of the year. Another name for this type of “super-cold” in infants and young children is bronchiolitis, which can also be caused by several other viruses. Testing for RSV is available, but the diagnosis of bronchiolitis does not require the identification of the virus, as the type of virus does not really influence treatment.

How is RSV treated?

Because RSV is a virus, there is no medication to make the infection go away faster. Antibiotics

do not work against viruses. For infants and children, you can use nonprescription medications such as acetaminophen or, for kids over 6 months, ibuprofen for fever or apparent discomfort. You can use a humidifier or vaporizer where the child sleeps and encourage them to drink extra fluids. Cold and cough medications are not recommended for children under 5 years of age, but you can use saline nose drops or spray and nasal suctioning to help temporarily with nasal congestion. You can also give ½ -1 tsp of honey a few times a day to help with the cough, but only for children over 1 year of age. Infants are at risk of developing potentially life-threatening botulism if they ingest honey that contains the spores of the bacterium that causes botulism. You can try nonprescription cough and cold medications for children over 5 years of age, but they frequently do not work.

Will breathing treatments help my child?

Unless your child has a history of wheezing in the past or if there is a very strong family history of asthma, nebulizer treatments with albuterol and oral or inhaled steroids are NOT recommended for young children with

RSV and wheezing. Children and adults who have asthma or Reactive Airways Disease use albuterol to combat the contraction of the muscles that line the small airways in the lungs, causing a narrowing of those airways and partial obstruction to the flow of air. Infants and young children do not have much of that type of muscle in their airways, so albuterol has been proven not to work. Likewise, steroids have been documented not to work for RSV infections. The wheezing heard in infants and young children with RSV and other types of viral bronchiolitis is thought to occur because of excess mucus production in the lungs, which causes some partial obstruction of the small airways. There is no medication available to treat this mucus production.

When do I need to see a doctor for RSV?

If your child with RSV is not having labored breathing, is not vomiting frequently due to hard coughing and is drinking plenty of

fluids, there’s usually no need for emergency treatment. Please have your child evaluated immediately if they exhibit any of these symptoms:

• Your child appears to be focusing only on getting air in and out of their lungs and is not interacting with you.

• You see the muscles below, between or above the ribs sucking in with each breath (retractions).

• Your child is vomiting frequently with or without coughing.

• Your child appears exhausted or is not drinking well.

How long does RSV last?

The acute phase of RSV generally lasts for about a week, with the worst symptoms coming at around the third and fourth days, then gradually improving. The cough may last for weeks. Children are thought to be contagious for 5-8 days, but some children can infect others for as

long as a month. There is no way to tell if your child is still contagious. A good rule of thumb is that they can return to daycare/school once they have had no fever for at least 24 hours (without fever medicine), they are eating and drinking well, and the cough may be present but is no longer very frequent or distressing.

Is RSV contagious?

RSV is very contagious! Please do not send your child to daycare or school with a cold unless they have been cleared by a healthcare provider. People of any age can catch RSV. In older kids and adults, it usually just causes cold symptoms, but the elderly and anyone with immune system problems may get very sick, so please keep your child away from these vulnerable people.

Young Singers of the Palm Beaches (YSPB) is an award-winning, inclusive, children’s community choir, comprised of young voices from public, private and home schools. As these children join together in song, they are building a strong foundation for the future by developing teamwork and leadership skills, forming cooperative and supportive friendships, and serving others in our community.

If you know a child who loves to sing, encourage them to audition for Young Singers. Their next auditions are December 17, 2022 and January 7, 2023. Audition requirements and registration for various grade levels can be found on their website at www.yspb.org/ audition.
