Greetings,
As we dive into the April issue of PB Parenting, I hope you are refreshed from a wonderful spring break. You may have traveled, had beach or pool time, or had to work, and the kids were off living their best lives at spring break camp!
Spring Break was a great trial run for what is ahead. With summer peeking around the corner, now is the perfect moment to start gearing up for the upcoming long break and booking summer camps. Flip to pages 14-33 for some invaluable tips to make the most out of summer including our 13th annual summer camp directory, which is a treasure trove of options for keeping your little ones engaged and entertained.
April also marks our baby and maternity issue, as a parent myself, I reminisce about the days when mine were little. On page 8, you'll find expert advice from local professional organizer Amy Bergman on getting your home baby-ready, going beyond just the nursery. Speaking of babies, one of the highlights for me each year is updating the list of the most popular baby names and discovering the latest trends. It's fascinating to see how naming trends evolve over time. While my own children's names may have been booted off the list, I still find joy in exploring the newest additions.
At PB Parenting, we pride ourselves on being your go-to local parenting resource, offering a wealth of information and support. Whether you're a seasoned parent or an expectant mom navigating the journey for the first time, we're here for you. Don't forget, our online community is just a click away at www.pbparenting.com, and you can also connect with fellow parents on our active Facebook Group, Palm Beach County Moms.

Are you or someone you love about to welcome a new baby? Congratulations! It can be such an exciting time; and it can be a bit daunting. There’s so much to do and to get ready for. If you are wondering what you can do now to help them or yourself prepare for baby, I’ve got you covered. Now is the perfect time to get set up in the best way possible, and I don’t just mean preparing a nursery. Below are ALL the other spaces that you can prep before the new baby to help make post-baby life less stressful and more organized.
Adjust Your Lights
Lights and noise can easily disturb a sleeping baby, and everyone loves a sleeping baby. Now might be a good time to change some of your
light switches in key areas, like the nursery, to a dimmer switch. Also, consider adding night lights in your bedroom, the nursery and the hallways so you can navigate the house at all hours of the night. You definitely don’t want to have to flip on a bright overhead light with a sleeping baby in your arms!
Clean The Car
Clean your car, remove any unnecessary items and install a car seat. You can even make an appointment to have it check at the Florida Department of Transportation to make sure it’s installed properly. Cleaning out your car will also mean that you can easily toss in hospital bags in a hurry and you will have room for your baby plus all of your bags, flowers and gifts when you
leave the hospital. Now is also a good time to stock your trunk with baby supplies. Use a bin or basket to make up a kit of baby essentials that you can keep stashed away in your trunk. If you want a fancy trunk organizer for all these items, try this one. A few spare diapers, wipes, clean towel, extra baby clothes and an extra shirt for you will come in so handy one day down the road.
Prep The Kitchen & Pantry
Even if you are planning to breast feed, you will need to set things up in your kitchen. Clear out a shelf or a cabinet, designating it for baby only. Purchase a special drying rack for baby related food items (I like this one from OXO) and designate a place on your counter top near the sink where this will live. Stock bottles, measuring cups and spoons for formula, and anything else baby might need. You can even get a jump on the solid foods and sippy cup years by packing away a few child-sized plates
and other eating utensils. You may already get some of these items at a baby shower prior to the baby’s arrival. Unpack them now and set up space for them.
Set Up “Baby Stations” In Key Areas Of Your Home
Just like in your car, you will need small baby care kits throughout your home, especially if you live in a multi-level house. If you plan for your baby to sleep in your primary bedroom near you for a while, make sure you have all the necessities you will need there (changing pad, wipes, diapers, feeding supplies, etc.). Other key areas might be your family room or home office if you will be working from home post-baby. You can get creative with these stations by utilizing exiting bureaus and adding a padded top, decorative baskets with lids to hide supplies, etc. Don’t want multiple changing stations throughout the house, consider getting a portable one that can be easily wheeled from

room-to-room. This also makes a fantastic baby shower gift!
Welcoming Guests
Everyone wants to see the new baby and you may also get some congratulatory gifts delivered. In order to be prepared for these “guests”, take a moment now to refresh your entry area. How and where do guests come in your home? Maybe you don’t want an automatic doorbell or chime to go off when you have a new baby at home sleeping throughout the day. Do you want to establish another way people can come into your home and visit? Do you want to put up a sign at your front door for visitors or even delivery people with instructions (i.e. “Please don’t ring doorbell”). Once visitors enter, have the items they will need to be ready to handle your baby in ways you are comfortable. Do you want to provide hand sanitizer? Face masks? Burp cloths so their clothes don’t get soiled? Thinking about these
things now will alleviate a lot of stress later.
I hope these ideas help you organize and prepare your whole home for your new little one. By doing some prep work now, you can alleviate lots of stress down the road. And of course, if you or someone you love needs help getting things “baby ready”, I am here to help!

FOUR TIPS FOR A SAFE, STUPENDOUS SUMMER!
BY MOLLY HIETAPELTOSummer is a time to spend with family and friends having fun, enjoying the outdoor activities, pool time, and the beach!
Here are a few tips that can help your family have an entertaining, safe and healthy summer.
1. Drink plenty of water! A good rule of thumb is to drink one bottle of cold water for every hour you’re spending in the heat and humidity. Keep an eye out for dehydration symptoms, including a dry or sticky mouth, dry, cool skin, headache, muscle cramps and even dizziness.
2. Protect your skin from the sun. Use and SPF of 30 or higher when you’re outside. It’s also a good idea to wear a hat and UVA and UVBblocking sunglasses, as well as to seek shade as much as possible between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
3. Swim with a buddy. Drowning can happen quickly and silently, so always swim with a friend and be aware of water conditions and potential obstacles that you might not see in murky or dark water.
4.Speaking of swimming, you can’t be “summer safe” without CPR! CPR can save someone’s life when their heart stops beating,
and kids as young as nine years-old can learn this skill. When someone’s heart stops, performing immediate CPR can double or triple their chance of survival. In most cases, performing Hands-Only CPR can be just as effective as CPR with rescue breaths. But in instances where someone may have drowned, the American Heart Association recommends using rescue breaths along with compressions.
The American Heart Association is dedicated to training the next generation of lifesavers through its CPR in Schools program. Thanks to American Heart Association advocates and volunteers across the nation, 40 states and Washington, DC have passed state laws that will assure all students are trained in life-saving CPR before they graduate from high school. For information on CPR courses near you, visit www.cpr.heart.org.

DAY CAMP CHECKLIST
• Hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes
• Sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 45
• Insect repellant wipes and/or insect repellent wristband (do not send an aerosol can of insect repellant–the spray will sting if it gets in your child’s eyes.)
• Bathing suit and towel
• Water bottle filled with ice-cold water
• Hat and Sunglasses
• Comfortable running shoes or closed-toe sports sandals WITH socks
• Extra set of clothes (especially a pair of socks
and shirt if they get wet from the rain)
• Rain poncho (rolls up small)
• Medication: All camps should have your child’s medical information on file. Having an extra note with details in their backpack and attached to their Prescription medication and/or Epi-Pen is helpful.
• Food: Some day camps will provide lunch and snacks. If you pack a lunch it should be easy to eat on the ground. A sandwich (avoid peanut butter since most camps are nut-free), fruit and a juice box or water makes for a healthy lunch. Granola bars make an excellent snack. Some camps may have snack bars or vending machines. Notify the camp of any food allergies your child may have.

to Plan a Road Trip for the Eclipse
TRAVELS & Places to go
Even though many eclipse enthusiasts have had April 8, 2024 marked on their calendars for years, there are some people who are just now deciding they want to experience this natural phenomenon in person. If this is you, it’s not too late.
Decide which city you want to visit. According to AAA booking data, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio are the most popular cities along the path of totality. Indianapolis, Cleveland, and Buffalo are also top eclipse-viewing destinations. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Dallas is currently seeing six times more reservations than last year at this same time.
Figure out how you will get there and where you will stay. Driving may be your best option, if flights are too expensive or sold out. AAA members get a discount with Hertz, which has increased staffing ahead of the eclipse and repositioned cars to highdemand areas. To save money, stay with family and friends who live nearby. AAA booking data show hotels in the most popular cities along the path of
totality are 48% more expensive during the eclipse weekend than they were that same time last year. Reach out to a AAA travel agent or visit Trip Canvas to plan a larger vacation around your eclipse trip. Determine timing. The eclipse falls on a Monday, so decide which day you want to depart. Many travelers will make a long weekend out of the event. Saturday, April 6 is expected to be a busy travel day. Hertz reports a 3,000% increase over last year in advance bookings for eclipse path cities for that Saturday. Remember, this is also Spring Break for many families, so there will be extra travelers moving about that weekend. Safety first. Expect heavier than normal traffic before and after the eclipse. AAA recommends:
• Keep your vehicle’s headlights on.
• Put the sun visor down to block your view of the sun.
• Don’t wear eclipse glasses while driving.
• Don’t try to photograph or video the eclipse while driving.
• Don’t pull over to the side of the road, highway, or interstate to view the eclipse.
• Exit the roadway and park in a safe area away from traffic to view the eclipse.
• Be mindful of pedestrians who may be walking around with their eyes on the sky!
