“Remembering Mothers”

Mother’s Day Celebrations and Gifts She’ll Treasure BY KIMBERLY BLAKER

No influence is so powerful as that of the mother. --Sarah Josepha Hale The role of mothers in shaping daughters and sons lives is unsurpassed. Mothers teach us to love, to be strong, to be confident, to persist, to live life to its fullest and be the best that we can be. Mother’s Day is just around the corner. So, this year give her the gift of your heart and time and make it a special day for mothers and children alike. Mother’s Day Brunch – Serve your mother a scrumptious breakfast or take her out for Mother’s Day brunch. If you prepare it yourself, the following menu will be sure to please: fruit salad, juice, waffles or pancakes with her favorite blueberry or strawberry topping, Canadian bacon and fresh sausage, omelets or eggs benedict, homemade hash browns, and coffee cake or Danishes. Also, don’t forget the fresh cut flowers for the table centerpiece. Say it with Music – Give a gift of music that speaks to the importance of mothers. Look for Songs Celebrating Mothers & Motherhood by Susan McKeown, Cathie Ryan, and Robin Spielberg, or other meaningful music for the occasion. Spring Blooms - What better way to spend a spring day than together in your

mother’s garden? Pick up her favorite annuals and perennials: begonias, petunias, violets, morning glories, poppies, marigolds, snapdragons, or mums. Then enjoy a relaxing day together planting and sprucing up her flower garden and catching up on old times. Mother/Child Memories – Give your mother a keepsake that’ll be dear to her heart. Purchase Mothers & Daughters: A Record Book About Us to fill out and share with her. Or create your own memory book with a scrapbook or journal and include photos and memories about special times the two of you have had together, the most important things you remember about your mother from your childhood, the ways in which they have inspired you, and the times you look forward to in the future. The Main Event – Surprise your mother with tickets to an event she’s been dying to see: the ballet, a concert, play, or musical, the opera, a favorite sporting event, a comedy show, or dinner theatre. Be sure to tell her in advance that you have something planned (but not what) so she’ll be all yours for the day. Family Portrait – If your family is like most, you’re well overdue for an updated family portrait. What better time to have it done than on Mother’s Day? Schedule to have your portrait taken at a studio or hire a photographer for a photo shoot in the

park. Coordinate with family members in advance on the formality and color scheme so outfits don’t clash. Inform your mother how to dress for her special day, but keep it a surprise, and don’t disclose your plans. A Little Pampering – Mothers spend many years pampering their children giving bubble baths, washing hair, and caring for them when they’re ill. Give your mother a special treat, a gift certificate to be pampered at the spa where she can enjoy a Swedish massage, hair design, a sea spa manicure and pedicure, or soothing facial. Weekend Getaway – Put together a weekend package designed especially for your mother. Choose a city that offers great shopping, art museums and culture centers, or even a quaint historic town with neat shops, cafes, and parks. Leave the dates for the getaway open so she can make the trip at her convenience, or so the two of you can make plans together. Keep it Simple – Plan a relaxing day together enjoying the outdoors and head to a nearby park where you can meander along nature trails, take a scenic pedal, and reminisce. Especially for Mothers - Select from one of many poetry books for mothers and about mothers that expresses what you’d like her to know. Try one of the following: • Mother, I Will Always Love You by Susan Polis Schultz • Mothersongs: Poems For, By, and About Mothers by Sandra M. Gilbert, et al. • Thoughts to Share with a Wonderful Mother: A Collection of Poems by Blue Mountain. Kimberly Blaker, of Arizona, is an author and freelance writer. Her articles have appeared in nearly 200 parenting and women’s magazines throughout the United States.

Mother’s Day Dilemmas Solved BY KERRIE MCLOUGHLIN

Remember Mother’s Day before

you were married? The day probably revolved around your own mom, stepmom or other mother figure. Then your mother-in-law came into the picture, and you had to really split your time every second Sunday in May. Once YOU became a mother you probably realized that juggling Mother’s Day visits (as well as your own “selfish” needs and wants) should be an Olympic event. While it’s true you can’t make everyone happy all of the time, I believe you CAN honor all the moms in your life — including yourself — every year. Here are some ideas: Dilemma: So many moms, so little time. Solution: Change it up. Who says Mother’s Day should only be celebrated on that specific Sunday in May? I like to have my stepmom over for dinner one night during the week leading up to Mother’s Day. Then maybe we take my mother-in-law out to dinner the night before. When Sunday rolls around, I have my mom over to hang out with us at our house for part of the day, and we make sure to serve her a special meal and shower her with cards and flowers. I get the best of both worlds on Mother’s Day:

being with my own mom and being with the little ones who made ME a mom. Dilemma: A long-distance relationship with your mom or mother-in-law. Solution: Skype! It’s free and fun — you just need an Internet connection and a camera hook-up for your computer. You could also make different plans every now and then (e.g., have an out-of-town Mother’s Day one year, then the next year stay put; or have one of the moms come for a weekend and stay at your place). Dilemma: You feel selfish and guilty for wanting it to be about you. Solution: I believe it’s your choice as to how you want to spend your day or weekend once you become a mom yourself. You might want to get away for a Saturday spa day or sit around at a coffeehouse on Sunday leisurely reading or chatting with a friend for a few hours. Other years you might want to hang out around the house all day letting the kids pamper you. Dilemma: My inboxes (laundry hamper, kitchen sink, etc.) are always full. Solution: Of all days, take TODAY off, which means no housework! Close your eyes as you walk by the sink full of

Ever been abandoned in the jungle, adopted by wolves, taught by a bear, befriended by a panther and chased by a tiger? In the Missoula Children’s Theatre musical adaptation of THE JUNGLE BOOK, Mowgli the man-cub has all these adventures and more. Following the 11:00 am performance, enjoy refreshments and lots of fun activities sponsored by the Bank of Belle Glade and Glades Area Branches of the Palm Beach County Library System. There will also be a book-signing with Tracie Gold and her book, “Bonnie the Bunny”. Parents, bring your cameras for this event which is included in the price of admission.

Dilemma: My child is a baby, and my husband can’t cook. Solution: If your husband and kids aren’t quite able to make you dinner on Mother’s Day, let them take you to a restaurant. If you aren’t up for wrestling with the kids at a restaurant, consider take-out. Don’t forget to grab something sweet that you love on the way home, like ice cream. This is the day you get to indulge and not feel one bit guilty! Dilemma: You’re a single mom. Solution: If you’re parenting alone, I’m hoping your kids will take over or that some trusted adult will assist them in making your day special. If your ex has the kids for the weekend, focus on yourself. The “no housework” rule applies to you, too, sister … believe me, it’ll still all be there tomorrow. Do what you love to do all day long. Go for a walk, read a juicy novel, go to a movie, soak in the tub, hang out with your own mom if you like. Mother’s Day is, of course, about mothers! Whatever situation you’re in mom-wise, try to make today out of the ordinary in some way. Just as you always want your children to have the best time on their birthday and other holidays, consider that you also deserve to have a good time on Mother’s Day. It’s all about balance, and it CAN be done! Kerrie McLoughlin is the homeschooling mom of five. Join in the fun at TheKerrieShow.com. /PBParenting

WHAT'’S EATING YOU? South Florida Science Center and Aquarium announces interactive summer traveling exhibition The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium invites the public to step right up and enter a carnival of creatures! Eww! What’s Eating You?, is a parade of parasites, including preserved and live specimens – specifically those that enjoy feasting on humans. The highly-interactive summer exhibit will dig into the history of human and parasite interaction from ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt, leading up to a more modern tale of sinister and saint critters that live to hitch a ride on human hosts – for the good or the bad. The exhibit will be on display Sunday, May 3 through Sunday, September 27. “Parasites are a natural and important part of our ecosystem and they are everywhere and worth exploring,” said Lew Crampton, Science Center CEO. “Eww! What’s Eating You? will explore the good, the bad and the ugly, of course behind the safety of glass

enclosures. The must-see exhibit is perfect for our high-traffic summers, where kids and families flood the Science Center for educational fun and an opportunity to beat the heat.” Famed comedian Carrot Top serves as a remote tour guide throughout the exhibit, which features a variety of bugs that swirl and twirl, including body morphing Guinea worms, rash causing Hookworms, kid-loving Pinworms, eye-invading Toxocara worms, malaria-causing mosquitoes, blood-sucking leeches and more. Although presented with colorful and dramatic backdrops with a circus-like feel, the exhibit takes entomology, the study of insects, seriously. The exhibit is curated by Dr. M. Lee Goff, who has been involved in forensic entomology for more than 25 years, and whose career highlights include consulting for CBS crime dramas CSI and CSI: Miami; serving as a member of the instructional staff for the FBI academy; and involvement in the recovery efforts at the World Trade Center. The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium features more than 50 hands-on educational exhibits, an 8,000 gallon fresh and salt water aquarium- featuring both local and exotic marine life, a digital planetarium,

conservation research station, Florida exhibit hall and an interactive Everglades exhibit. During Eww! What’s Eating You? admission to the Science Center is $15.00 for adults, $11.00 for children ages 3 to 12, and $13.00 for seniors over the age of 60. Children under 3 and Science Center members are free. The Science Center is located at 4801 Dreher Trail North, West Palm Beach, FL. Community cares New Nicklaus Children’s Name for Miami Children’s Health System Flagship Hospital and Outpatient Centers The Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation and Miami Children’s Health System have announced a $60 million pledge to support the sustained growth and advancement of the health system’s acclaimed Miami-based children’s hospital. In recognition, the hospital and network of outpatient centers now bear the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital name. “The health and well-being of children have always been a primary focus for us,” golf icon Jack Nicklaus and his wife Barbara said in a shared statement. “The hospital has been a wonderful partner. Our collaboration with Miami Children’s Health System in serving children in Palm Beach County has led us to seek additional opportunities to make a difference. We are proud and incredibly humbled by the decision to place our family name on the hospital. To us, there is no higher calling than to help children in need of medical care, hope and healing.” Dr. Narendra Kini, President and CEO of Miami Children’s Health System, said, “Jack and Barbara Nicklaus— through their Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation—are exceptional

philanthropists whose generosity is legendary. This transition marks the cornerstone of a legacy that will have an enduring impact on children and families for generations to come, supporting the hospital in its mission as a world-class pediatric acute-care hospital. It is only fitting that our flagship hospital and growing network of outpatient centers now bear the Nicklaus name and honor the family mission to impact children and families throughout South Florida.” Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, which was founded in 1950 as Variety Children’s Hospital, celebrates its 65th anniversary this year. It has a long and distinguished tradition of serving children. The 289-bed private, non-profit freestanding hospital receives children from throughout Florida, the U.S. and more than 75 countries. It is renowned for excellence in all pediatric specialties and has more pediatric programs ranked among “America’s Best” by U.S. News & World Report than any other hospital in Florida. Miami Children’s Health System also features a network of eight outpatient centers extending from southern

Miami-Dade County to Palm Beach Gardens. Along with the hospital, these now incorporate the Nicklaus name. The $60 million pledge will make possible many enhancements for the hospital, including supporting construction of the planned 212,000-square-foot Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion, now in progress. This new facility will include provisions for three new family-centered intensive care units. Funds will also support emergency and trauma preparedness, and enhance globally recognized centers for excellence at the hospital, including the Heart Program, Cancer Center and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Brain Institute. Miami Children’s Hospital began collaborating with the Nicklaus Health Care Foundation in 2010, with the announcement of the creation

of the Miami Children’s Hospital Nicklaus Care Center in western Palm Beach County, offering pediatric subspecialty consultations. In 2012, the two organizations celebrated the opening of the Miami Children’s Hospital Nicklaus Outpatient Center in Legacy Place in Palm Beach Gardens, which offers pediatric urgent care, rehabilitation services, imaging services and subspecialty appointments. In 2014, all Palm Beach County services were consolidated at the Palm Beach Gardens facility.
