Letter From The Publisher Greetings, Ready or not! You only have a couple weeks before school starts! This year is an exciting year for me as my daughter starts Kindergarten. I couldn’t imagine when Abby was born that the day would come that she would head off to Elementary school. My youngest son is also starting his first year of pre-school. My first challenge for this school year will be getting two lunches packed, and two children dressed, fed and out the door! Check out page 8 “Back to School 101” for some great suggestions on how to transition from Summertime to School time. I will definitely be doing some practice runs the week before! If you need some lunch ideas to keep lunch lively, turn to page 30 for some creative bento boxes. This issue is our biggest yet and it is packed with information to get you ready for the school year! Don’t miss our cut out school calendar on page 11 with all the holiday and early release dates. Perhaps you are still uncertain where your child will be going in August or maybe you are planning ahead for next year - Check out our 2nd annual School Spotlight. We have a lot of information about pre-schools, private and charter schools available in our area. PB Parenting hopes you have a great first day of school and a great school year!

BACK TO SCHOOL 101: 6 Tips for Making the Transition from Summertime to School Time BY RHONDA FRANZ Children don’t want to think about it, parents have to: the first day of school is on its way. This year, plan ahead, and make the switch from a laid-back summer to a scheduled school day as smooth as possible for you and your family. 1. Double-check supplies. Does your child have everything listed on her school’s supply list? What about accessories needed for lockers or clothing and equipment for extra-curricular activities? Make sure supplies are ready and working before the first day. • Sharpen pencils. • Check ink pens. • Check zippers on gym bags and backpacks. • Look over bags and backpacks for rips, tears, or holes. • Make sure calculators and other technology devices work. • Label everything with your child’s name. 2. Start the school schedule before starting school. • Start the school schedule at least a week before the first day. Go through the routine: When do kids need to get out of bed? What needs to be added to the routine that is different

from summer mornings? Get the whole family to bed earlier— every night. Have things ready the night before. Make sure clothes are washed and laid out for the morning. Put backpacks and books in the car. If possible, have lunches packed and ready.
3. Take your routine for a test drive. If you drive your kids, can you make it to school with time to spare? Is the wakeup time adequate for getting to the bus stop? If your child is in a new school, this can be especially helpful in making sure your morning routine works for everyone. 4. Pack lunch. If your kids are taking their lunch, you can start preparation the week leading up to their first day. • Section serving portions of foods like crackers, chips, cut veggies and fruits into small, reusable containers or zipper storage bags. • Stock up on sandwich ingredients for those mornings when a last-minute lunch needs packing. • Make up cookies in double batches and store them in the freezer. • Put utensils and napkins in lunch sacks or lunch boxes the night before.

marked in advance will help avoid confusion and help you make decisions about how to plan for, and around, school events.
5. Mark school functions on the family calendar, and your mobile device. School districts, and individual schools often have major events on their calendar for the whole nine months. Whether you use a paper calendar, a software program, or a web-based organizer, make sure everything from the first parent meeting to the prom is marked for the school year. Having as many school events as possible
6. Size up your kids. And if necessary, overhaul their wardrobe. Summer t-shirts and swim trunks won’t pass for class, and it’s likely your child is a different size and shape since last fall. Go through school clothes and make sure everything fits. If not, pass it on and replace with appropriate attire. Rhonda Franz is an educator and writer. She lives in northwest Arkansas with her husband, three children, a kitchen calendar, and a daily organizer.

THE HEAT IS ON:
How to Protect Your Young Athletes BY ELIZABETH BRENNAN, MD, FACEP
As school commences, so does the
fall sports season, putting many young athletes back on the field or in the gym. Heat and humidity are at their peak, leaving children vulnerable to heat-related illness. Extreme heat can cause children to become sick from dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Here is what you need to know to protect your young athletes from the potential health effects of extreme heat. What are heat cramps and how do you treat them? Heat cramps are muscle pain or spasms that may occur in the arms, legs or abdomen during strenuous activity. They occur as a result of dehydration from perspiration. Treatment for heat cramps includes: • Bring the athlete to a cool place, either indoors in the AC or outdoors in the shade. • Encourage the child to drink water or a sports beverage. • Massage the affected muscle to bring relief. • Wait several hours after cramping subsides before allowing the athlete to resume physical activity as further exertion may lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. • Seek medical attention if cramping continues after one hour.
12 August 2014 | PB Parenting |
How can I tell if my child has symptoms of heat exhaustion? Heat exhaustion results from excessive loss of water and salt through sweat. Warning signs include profuse perspiration; cold, clammy, pale skin; cramping; fatigue; weakness; headache; nausea; vomiting; dizziness; or fainting. Treatment includes: • Take a core body temperature, preferably rectal; and if > 103 degrees, seek medical attention. • Follow the same instructions for heat cramps, such as bringing the child to a cool place and giving them a drink. • Prepare a bath, shower or sponge bath with cool water. • Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, so consider seeking medical attention, especially if the temperature is > 103 degrees. How is heat stroke different from heat exhaustion? Heat stroke is a potentially deadly condition in which the body’s thermostat malfunctions and body temperatures can reach 104 degrees or higher within 10-15 minutes. This is a very different problem than fever of 104 degrees because external factors are driving up the body temperature. Compounding the problem is the person is unable to perspire adequately so body heat is retained rather than released. Symptoms include: red, hot, dry skin; throbbing headache; nausea; Continued on page 14
dizziness; confusion; seizures; or even unconsciousness.
•
It is imperative to seek emergency medical assistance while cooling the person. Move the child to a cool place, remove clothing that might be trapping heat, and get cool water on the skin. DO NOT try to give anyone in this state something to drink; if they are delirious or confused, they might aspirate. How do I protect my child from heatrelated illness? • Avoid exercise during the hottest parts of the day. • Make sure your child stays hydrated. PREHYDRATE before activity and every 15 minutes during activity. • Dress your child in clothing that wicks moisture and don’t forget to apply sunscreen! • Provide frequent breaks from strenuous physical activity when heat

and humidity are high. Plan for areas where your child can cool down in shade or air conditioning. Provide water misting bottles to cool down.

Family Fitness and Nutrition for the Back-to-School Season Healthy Tips for Busy Families during the Busy Back-toSchool Season Going back to school in good health is a great way for a family to start the year. The average family has more commitments than time to meet them, from homework to basketball practice to piano lessons. As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler, it often seems impossible to fit one more thing into the schedule, no matter how good it is for you.
of healthy meals and your regular exercise routine. In addition to having healthy habits, explain why you do things the way you do. •

According to a study by the University of Illinois, sitting around a table together at mealtime, passing bowls and encouraging children to serve themselves, helps kids hone their developmental and cognitive skills. Family-style dining helps children develop fine motor skills, it also enables reciprocal/reflective conversation engagement, selfregulation, sharing and palate development.

Neil McNerney, a counselor and author of Homework: A Parent’s Guide to Helping Out Without Freaking Out, strongly encourages parents to attend their school’s “back to school night.” He says, “Learn as much as you can about each subject, homework policies, tests, etc. Then review this information with your kids to make sure you are all on the same page.” Discuss homework expectations with your child either before school starts or on a weekend when there isn’t any homework to be done. Avoid introducing the topic in the midst of a homework session. Share what you and the teacher will be asking of him and how that may have changed from the previous school year. Make sure to also ask your child what he expects. Open the lines of communication right from the start. Establish a routine Teacher and mom, Gwen Stephens, believes in the value of routine. “Establish a time every day that
homework is to be done,” she says. “For some kids it works best to get it done right away. Other kids need time to chill out.” The key involves ironing out what works best for your family and then sticking with it. When there’s a rhythm in place, kids learn to roll with it. Routine alone can smooth out problems with homework, particularly in assuring a prompt start. For Jung-Kim the routine involves a quiet environment. Usually she picks Isabella up from school two hours before she retrieves her son from daycare. The two enjoy some one-on-one time at first. Then it’s time for distraction-free homework. No television, no computer, no music. JungKim has learned keeping her daughter calm allows a more trouble-free process. And with no distractions for herself, JungKim is free to step in when Isabella has questions or needs help.

once you’ve created an acceptable space, maintain it. Michele Smith’s three children work together at one table. “They have dedicated space on our dining room table all week so they can keep their supplies out.”
In Stephens’s home the routine is similar: her girls walk in the door and grab a bite to eat. Then they start on homework as they snack. Stephens keeps the same schedule every day, including Friday, unless one of the girls has an after-school activity. Mom, Christa Hines, implements a timer in her routine to keep the schedule on track. “I give my son 30 minutes to chill out and play,” says Hines. “We set the timer so there’s no argument at the end of the 30 minutes.” Finding a good homework routine may take some trial and error. And it may not be the same for all the kids in your house. One may do best getting right to the homework, while another requires downtime first. And afterschool lessons and sports may require shifts in the routine for a season. But once you find what works, be consistent. Create a space Like a routine, workspace needs may vary between children. Some work best where there are few visual distractions, such as at a desk facing a wall. Others may prefer company while working, or need to be near mom for help. Again, don’t be afraid to switch around for the first few weeks to find a suitable spot for your child. But

As Smith notes, it’s important for children to have homework supplies available. There’s nothing more frustrating than starting a worksheet on measurements, only to find you don’t have a ruler. Double-check your stash of pencils, erasers, and other supplies. Then store them near where your child will be working. If you’re ambitious, you can set out supplies at their workspace before they return from school. The subtle message encourages them to get to work sooner. Provide support with boundaries Be encouraging. Give your child concrete observations about themselves that demonstrate you believe they can succeed at homework. Note past successes, as well as tools and skills they’ve gained. And when it comes to completing homework, be accessible without hovering. “It’s good to check for completion, but not a good idea to make your child re-do assignments due to sloppiness or a poor job,” says McNerney. Above all, avoid the desire to do the work for your child. Both Stephens and McNerney are firm on this point. “Some parents don’t know when to let the child do homework without interfering.” Stephens explains. “(Homework) should
be something the teacher checks, not the parent. Otherwise that’s not the child’s homework any more. It’s the parent’s.”

Groups and individualized services for children, adolescents, and young adults commonly with ADHD, Asperger’s/high functioning autism, learning disabilities, language impairments, NVLD, and/or symptoms of anxiety, depression, shyness, obsessive-compulsiveness, etc.
Stephens also advocates for parents practicing memorization of spelling and math facts. Given their limited time during the school day, teachers rely on parents to supplement with work at home. “Take flash cards in the van,” Stephens urges.
Using these tools, you can ease your child back into the routine of schoolwork at home. The results should be encouraging to everyone. While homework isn’t always her family’s favorite part of the day, Jung-Kim is pleased with her setup, especially having personal time with her daughter. “It let’s her know I am here,” she explains. Sometimes that’s the best thing parents can do for their kids when it comes to homework. Lara Krupicka is a freelance writer who reevaluates the homework routine for her three daughters every school year.

Model a firm but positive attitude Remember that learning to complete independent work is a life skill. When your child complains about having to do homework, acknowledge their frustration. Then encourage them to get to work. “I expect every year homework will increase,” says Stephens. “I say, ‘It’s not going to get easier as you get older.’” McNerney encourages parents to watch their semantics, particularly with children who would rather skip the work.“Stop calling it homework! When we ask our kids: ‘Did you do your homework?’ they will usually only think of actual homework and not studying, reading, practicing, and working on long-term projects. Instead ask: “What work do you have tonight?”

Firsthand Savings on Secondhand Goods BY LARA KRUPICKA
ISniffing ’ve been a thrift diva since childhood. out a bargain brings me a thrill,
so I’ve never shied away from buying other people’s cast-offs. Not so with many of my peers. In recent years, however, the stigma of buying used has faded thanks to sites like eBay, Craigslist and Bookoo.com. Economic necessity and the green movement may give thrift a chance to become trendy. Want to get in on the savings? Check out these possibilities before you pay full price: Sporting Goods. With kids’ sizes and interests changing often, it makes sense to spend less by getting used equipment. Communities have long been holding athletic equipment resales and you can usually find outgrown gear at garage sales. But if you need a sportsrelated item right away, used sporting goods retailers, like Play It Again Sports, have new and used stock available yearround.
parts. Somerville also cautions buyers of things like lacrosse pads to “make sure that all of the Velcro and elastic works well, and that nothing is torn or missing (or too smelly!)”. Better off new: Personal items like mouth guards and jock shorts. Ski goggles, which usually only last a season or two before getting too scratched to see through. And for hockey sticks, Somerville points out that “it’s difficult to know if there is a micro-crack inside a used hockey stock that is ready to break on your first shot”.
Clothing. As toddlers, your kids may have been fine with hand-me-downs, but most grade-schoolers like to make their own choices. You can still save on clothes by shopping at secondhand stores and clothing resale events. Linda Smith, a mother of two fashionconscious girls appreciates the value of getting name brand clothes at bargain Watch for: Ian Somerville, owner of Play It prices through buying at resale shops. One benefit Smith notes is that “they’ve Again Sports store, suggests looking for defects that would affect the function of already shrunk. The clothes’ size and the item. lot and just get one or two things.” Watch for: Worn spots on elbows and knees, broken zippers, and fatigued elastic. Better off new: Athletic shoes for daily use where quality affects physical comfort, and underwear (for obvious reasons). Furniture. One category where buying used costs less, but also nets potentially better quality is furniture. Fun, unusual, and well-built desks, bunk beds, and bookcases don’t have to cost a fortune. Check out neighborhood yard sale listings, and estate sales to find that piece you’re looking for. Watch for: Signs of mold or deeper-thansurface water damage on wood, and upholstered pieces with funky smells. Better off new: Cribs, due to safety standards, and mattresses, particularly with the rise in bedbug infestations. Instruments. Particularly when your child is just starting out learning an instrument, it’s a good idea not to buy them a new instrument. In many cases, you can rent through your child’s school or a local music shop. And once your child has decided to stick with an instrument, you can save up to 30% or 40% by buying used. The key is buying a quality instrument. As Carla Ulbrich, a musician and former music store staffer, points out, “You can find cheaply-made instruments that don’t play in tune. Then your child will think they have no talent. This can be very frustrating.”

for trumpets, Ludwig for drums). Make sure all moving parts work smoothly, pads aren’t worn down, and any corks are in good condition. Remember that dents are generally cosmetic. It also helps to have a music shop inspect the instrument and advise you of any work needed before buying from a third party. Ulbrich also strongly advises against purchasing an instrument through eBay or Craigslist where you’re buying sight unseen from an unvetted seller. Better off new: Instruments beyond student level. Is Your Tween Ready to be Home Alone? BY JUDY M. MILLER
N
eed to run a few errands? Get out of the house for a while for some mental health time or exercise? Around the time your child reaches the pre-tween (tween) years, staying home alone may be an option. But, how do you know if your child is ready? The following points will help you determine if your child is equipped to do so: Your tween indicates they want to stay home alone. Your child is seeking more independence and has asked you to leave him by himself. He is not anxious when you are gone and he can keep himself occupied safely. Your tween follows your directions and rules. Your child has shown you that he can follow your expectations, even when you are not present. You’ve witnessed your child making good choices without your input. He adheres to the guidelines you have set in place about having a friend over, watching TV or a movie, playing video games, and time spent outdoors. Your tween is reliable and selfsufficient. Daily chores are done with

little to no reminders. Your child can safely prepare simple snacks when he is hungry. He knows how to properly use the microwave and toaster. You can rely on him to use only the appliances you’ve agreed to let him use. Your tween uses the phone properly. Your child answers the phone appropriately. He recognizes why it is all right to fib in this instance-when you are away from the house-saying you are unavailable, and how to take a message correctly. Your tween understands safety. He is familiar with basic first-aid and knows what to do in case of a fire or other emergency. He knows to call 911 and other emergency numbers if necessary. He knows what he can and cannot do when you are not at home. He understands that knives cannot be used without your supervision. He knows not to open the door while you are gone and what neighbors to call or go to if he needs help. He knows the “safe” meeting spot, and how to find you or be found, in case anything should happen. He knows where the flashlights and extra batteries are.
Although your child may know the emergency numbers, keep a list of emergency contacts and numbers in an easy to view place. Make sure all of your Pediatric Dentistry numbers are there as well. Give him something to do to structure his time. This helps alone time pass quickly. Check in with your tween while you are gone. Call to see if he is comfortable, see if he has any questions, and also to keep him updated on when you will arrive back home. This is an exciting time for your tween as he establishes more independence, with your confidence that he will do well. Judy M. Miller is a freelance writer living in the Midwest with her husband and four children, who are comfortable being home alone. She is the author of What To Expect From Your Adopted Tween. According to the Florida Department of Children and Family, children left unsupervised or in the care of young siblings are at increased risk for accidental injury and behavioral and academic problems. Florida law does not have a hard and fast rule about when children can be left home alone, but instead expects parents to take all of the circumstances into account when deciding what level of supervision is needed. Because children mature at different rates, there is no single, pre-set age at which children are considered “old enough” to stay home by themselves for short periods. Parents must evaluate their child’s individual development and physical capabilities. The National SAFE KIDS Campaign recommends that children not be left alone before the age of 12. Many other children will not be ready until later than that. Also, experts caution that older siblings are generally not ready for the responsibility of supervising younger children until the age of 15 or older. The following are some questions families should answer before making this important decision: • Is my child comfortable, confident and

willing to stay home alone? Does my child consistently follow my rules and guidelines? Has my child demonstrated good independent judgment and problemsolving skills in the past? Is my child able to stay calm when confronted with unexpected events? Have I brainstormed with my child about what unexpected situations could possibly come up while he or she is alone, and how to handle them? Is my child consistently truthful with me? Does he or she readily come to me with problems and concerns? Does my child understand the importance of safety and know basic safety procedures? Will my child make decisions to stay safe, even at the risk of seeming rude or overly cautious to other children or adults? Does my child have the ability to calmly provide his/her name, address, phone number and directions to our home in an emergency? Can my child lock and unlock the doors and windows of our home? Can my child tell time? Is my child able to work independently on homework? Have my child and I established a clearly structured routine for when he or she is home alone, with defined responsibilities and privileges? If I have more than one child staying home, have the children demonstrated the ability to get along well and solve conflicts without physical fighting or adult intervention? Have my child and I had some “dry runs” to allow him or her to practice self-care skills while I am at home, but purposefully “not available”? Is our neighborhood safe? Do we have neighbors that my child and I know and trust?
After reviewing this list of questions, you’ll have a better idea of how ready your child is to stay home alone. These are only general guidelines. Parents and other caregivers must also consider other factors specific to their individual child and family circumstances in order to make the best decision. Parents and caregivers should begin leaving children home alone progressively—for only a short time, at first, and stay relatively close to home. To help ensure a child’s safety when staying at home alone, follow these safety tips: • Place all emergency numbers and the phone number of a friend or neighbor in a visible place near all phones. • Make sure your child knows your fire escape plans. Remind your child to get out of the house immediately if the smoke alarm sounds and to call the fire department from a neighbor’s house. • Show your child where the first-aid kit is and how to use the items in it. • Prepare a snack or meal for your child in advance, preferably one that does not need to be heated. • Tell the child where you will be, how you can be reached, and when you will return home. • If possible, leave your cellular phone number. Knowing your child can reach you in an instant will help you, and your child, feel more at ease. • If your child arrives home to an empty house, have him or her call you to check-in. Set ground rules for: • leaving the house • having friends over • cooking • answering the phone/door • using the Internet If self-care is not appropriate for your child at this time, you may want to consider your child care options.
