Letter From The Publisher Greetings, Are you ready to say goodbye to 2014? It is hard to believe 2015 will be here in 31 days (or less). A new year always makes me pause and reflect on the year that just passed by. In 2014, I saw a lot of changes personally in my life. I am thankful for that journey and where it has taken me as a person. I want to thank my friends and family for their support and love. This issue will wrap up our 3rd year of publishing. Heading into our 4th year, I want to thank all our readers and advertisers for your continued support. We have grown quite a lot in the past year and this couldn’t have happened without you. Behind the scenes each month, I am thankful for my amazing team. Each month, Jennifer Preville keeps the advertising sales side of our publication running like a well oiled machine. Also a special thank you to my team of distributors. Stephanie, Steven, Liz, Arlene and Angela are out there each month driving all over in the rain and heat making sure issues arrive to your favorite places to pick them up! 7 Ways to Ring In the New Year with Your Kids BY JUDY M. MILLER

C

elebrating the New Year was an adults-only evening, until I had kids. Upon becoming a parent I had no desire to leave my kids at home with a babysitter (if I could get one) so I decided to make New Year’s Eve family friendly and still have a good time. Here are some ways in which we have rung in the New Year:

cuisine, for example Indian, and cooked a multi-course meal. We have appetizers, vegetables, meats, starches, desserts, etc.

Get Gussied Up or Dress in Theme Why wear holiday clothes only once or a few times? Growing kids quickly sprout through them. Put the special clothing on, along with some added bling for the evening. Our sons have worn suit coats and bowties; our daughters have been bedazzled with sequins, boas, and laces in addition to their dresses.

Have a Progressive Feast We love a movable meal. Each course is served in a particular room of our house. Some years we get the china out; other years we mix it up. My kids love to picnic all over the house, so we have beach blankets set up in the rooms we will eat in.

Tired of the holiday clothes? Decide on a theme. Perhaps it will relate to your dinner cuisine, perhaps not. It does not matter since it is your party. One year we ate Italian food and wore Halloween costumes. Be sure to take pictures. Make a Special Meal, Together We have created our New Year’s Eve dinner in two ways. We have chosen a

We have also asked our children what they want for each course, their favorite, and then put it to a vote. There are six of us so we always have at least six options during the meal.

Candles are an “always.” They add ambience and specialness to this last evening of the year. They are lit throughout the house. My kids help shop, prepare and cook since they are older. Younger kids can assist you by setting tables or getting our ingredients. Be sure to go over the recipes ahead of time. Some ingredients may prove challenging to find.

Bubbles and Glow for Everyone! My husband and I celebrate the New Year with a glass or two of champagne. Our kids get glasses of sparking apple or grape juice in champagne flutes. Glow stick necklaces, along with whatever else you decide to dress up in, are fun. We buy glow stick necklaces in bulk, something we began doing when our kids were very young. They still love to wear them, even fashioning crowns and bracelets out of them. We fill balloons and hang them in each of the rooms we are dining in. Some years we go with specific colors; other years we fill what leftovers we have. Play Games We are passionate about our card and board games. Any night home is an excuse to sit down and play games. Consider getting a new game or two to

play or teaching your kids how to play Bridge or Euchre if they are old enough. Dance and Sing Create a playlist of party songs to listen to or go with music that resonates with the theme you have chosen. One year we listened to NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys; that music unearthed a lot of memories and reminiscing. Cheat on the Time Zone Do you have younger kids? Why not celebrate New Year’s as it happens in another time zone? This is something I did when my kids were young. Staying up through midnight was difficult for them, and us - their exhausted parents. Do you live in the Pacific Zone? Try celebrating the New Year when it happens in the Eastern Zone. Do you live in the Eastern Zone? Perhaps you might celebrate with England. (See the sidebar on next page for a country countdown.).

Ringing in the New Year with your kids can be enjoyable. You also generate a new family tradition in the process of creating a memorable evening, one sure to be passed down by your kids to theirs. Judy M. Miller is a freelance writer living in the Midwest with her husband and four children. She looks forward to celebrating another New Year with her family. Christmas Tree Safety BY BETH N. DAVIS

During the holidays, it is especially important with children in the house to take precautions to prevent tree related fires and injuries. Follow the steps below to ensure safety during this holiday season. Pick the Right Tree Choosing the right tree can help you avoid many of the most common problems that contribute to Christmas tree fires. If you have an artificial tree, be sure it is labeled by the manufacturer as fire retardant. These trees are made of flame resistant materials that will be less likely to start or contribute to a fire. If you prefer to purchase a fresh tree, choose one with fresh, green needles that are hard to pull from branches and when bent between your fingers do not break. Do not buy a dry or dying Christmas tree. No matter how appealing the idea of a “Charlie Brown” tree may be, if the tree is brown or dropping a lot of needles, it is not safe to keep in your home. The trunk butt of a fresh tree will be sticky with resin, and, when tapped on the ground, the tree should not lose many needles. Place the Tree Carefully Once you have selected your tree and 28 December 2014 | PB Parenting |

bring it home, find the right place for it to sit. Place your tree securely in a tree stand that is designed to reduce tipping. Make sure your tree stands upright securely. If it shakes at all, fasten the base of the tree more firmly into the stand so that it does not fall over. Before placing a fresh tree in the stand, cut 1-2” from the base of the trunk and add an ample supply of water. Be sure to add water daily to fresh trees. The tree should be placed at least three feet away from heat sources such as fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights and should not block any exits. Trees themselves do not often cause fires. Surrounding debris such as newspapers and magazines, boxes or bags and curtains and drapes are much more likely to catch fire. Decorate the Tree Responsibly Use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both. Make certain you are using the right lights for your application. Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections and do not connect more

Providing Academic Excellence in South Florida for over 20 years.

than three strands of mini string lights to one extension cord. Be sure to review manufacturer’s instructions for the maximum number of LED strands to connect. Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed. Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.

Give your child the building blocks of their future,

CAMBRIDGE STYLE.

Dispose of Your Tree Promptly After Christmas, a well-watered tree may survive 6 to 8 weeks, after which it will rapidly dry out. Be sure to dispose of your fresh tree as soon as needles begin to drop. Artificial trees should be inspected for any needed repairs before they are stored away for the year.

Christmas trees are a wonderful addition to the holiday season and by caring for them properly you can avoid the dangers that they may pose. Beth N. Davis writes from Silver Spring, MD where she and her husband are raising their four children.

Meal Planning Made Easy BY STEPHANIE VOZZA

I

used to daydream that I was married to Jerry Seinfeld. Not because he’s funny, or even because he’s famous. No, it was because Jerry seems to embrace cereal as a culinary dining option. Oh, I could just imagine it: Me: Here is your dinner, honey, a delicious bowl of Grape Nuts! Jerry: What is the deal with Grape Nuts? You open the box— Me: I know, dear, “no grapes, no nuts.” So do you want skim or 1 percent? Alas, I didn’t marry Jerry. I married a nice Italian boy whose nice Italian mom can cook up a storm. And meal planning isn’t my thing. So, every day around 6:00 p.m., I used to have a little bit of a panic attack.

30 December 2014 | PB Parenting |

And I wasn’t alone: 37 percent of families admit that they don’t know what they’re having for dinner until they start cooking. This is like loading your family in the car for an outing and having no idea where you’re going until you start driving. Do you know how to get there? Do you have enough gas? Will everyone enjoy the destination? This situation can cause stress and frustration. If deciding what to have for dinner is a task that causes you stress too, consider creating a weekly meal plan. It can be as involved or as simple as you want. The Five-Minute Mom’s Club approach to any task that causes you stress is to look at it through 3-D glasses, asking yourself these three questions: What would happen if I don’t do it? Can I delegate this task? How can I do this task in the shortest possible amount of time?

Before you roll your eyes and chant BORING!, humor me. Here’s why it works for us: I don’t enjoy cooking, and my family is more meat and potatoes than gourmet cuisine—they prefer the predictable. Dinewithoutwhine.com and Dinnerplanner.com are two meal-planning services that cater to families with small children. Free meal plans are available at Monthlymenuplanner.com. You can also visit Organizing Junkie’s website at Orgjunkie.com, where she posts her Menu Plan Monday. You can peruse other families’ meal plans. Or grab a copy of Woman’s Day magazine and take advantage of the month of meals they plan for you. You can find the menus at Womansday.com under the Recipes tab. Click on Month of Menus, which brings up the menus with printable grocery lists that correspond with the week’s meals. Engage the Family in Meal Planning Since everyone eats, ask everyone in your home to make a list of your family’s favorite meals, including entrées as well as side dishes such as soups, salads, potatoes, pasta, and vegetables. Put each dish on an index card and select a meal for each night of the week. Or have your tech-savvy child or partner computerize menus with Plantoeat. com, a fee-based website that creates a spreadsheet for you. It allows you to enter recipes or import them from websites or blogs. Then you drag recipes from your virtual recipe box to your week. It coordinates your grocery list, too. You can

32 December 2014 | PB Parenting |

Our week goes like this: On Mondays we have Mexican, Tuesday it’s chicken in the crock pot, Wednesdays we have soup and sandwiches (soup and salad in the summer), Thursdays we have pasta, Fridays we have pizza, Saturdays we grill, and on Sundays we have Sunday dinner. The key to making the same dishes on the same nights is to have a standard entrée and a few entrees in your arsenal that you create when you feel like it. For example, Sunday’s standard dish is spaghetti and meatballs (it was a tradition that my Nana started). But every so often I make a turkey or a roast. Monday’s no-brainer dish is beef tacos. But every so often, I make quesadillas or fajitas. On Tuesdays, we have chicken in the crock-pot over rice. But every so often, I make chicken and dumplings. You get the idea. The key is that standard meals create a standard grocery list and a standard item to take out of the freezer each night, which makes meal planning almost a no-brainer. Meal Planning with Friends Make meal planning fun by combining the mundane chore with a girl’s night out. You can simply bring recipes and your calendar and swap meal ideas, penciling them in together. Consider creating a Facebook Group, blog, or other online community for your recipe friends where you can post feedback. Or make it more of an adventure by visiting

a meal preparation kitchen such as Dream Dinners or Super Suppers. You’ll leave with a week’s worth of meals ready to go into your freezer. It’s not necessarily budget-friendly, but with a group of friends, it’s definitely fun. Alternatively, you can easily try this same concept at someone’s home. Gather four of your friends and have each person bring the ingredients for their favorite dinner recipe, enough to serve each friend’s family. Then have a large cook/ assemble party. Each person will leave with enough meals for a week. Be sure to package the meals so they can be frozen. And check out Hotby6.com, a cool new fee-based website that offers meal plans for pre-assemble freezable meals.

You can also organize an ongoing meal swap coop. Gather four friends (for a total of five including you) and ask each to cook a meal, making enough for five families. Swap meals and you’ve got your meals planned for a week. Have a Go-To Meal Always have a go-to dinner in the freezer for nights that just don’t go as planned or when you just don’t feel like cooking. For me, it’s Trader Joe’s Fried Rice, to which I add my own chicken. This cooks up quick, and my family loves it. I stock up and always have a few extra bags in my freezer. Is there a brand of frozen lasagna that your family loves? What about jarred spaghetti sauce? Stock up on these items so that you can turn them into your go-to meal. Road Trip Boredom Busters Do your holidays include a trip through the woods to grandmother’s house? The family road trip can be a time to bond and learn about each other’s interests and points of view — or an ordeal that makes you want to scream every time you hear “Are we there yet?” from your kids. A road trip can be a fun, educational, and sane experience with just a little planning, creativity, and preparation. Sure, electronic games, apps, and portable DVD players are great distractions. But don’t overlook these family-friendly games and activities that can keep everyone happy as the miles go by. Can-Do Cards Don’t underestimate the power of a deck of cards. It presents endless possibilities for all ages and can provide hours of entertainment and concentration. If your kids are sick of the standard Go Fish, Crazy Eights, and Rummy games, buy — or borrow from your local library — a kids’ card games book for new ideas. Or buy a deck of quiz or trivia cards to keep their brains busy. Contest Craze Hold an official family spelling bee or trivia contest using index cards to write down

words or questions. Winners can earn trinkets, stickers, activity or coloring books, trading cards, food treats, money (the younger the child, the smaller the amount), or extra minutes of hotel pool time or stayup-late time. Good Ol’ Games Use the fallback road-trip games — 20 Questions, the License Plate Game, and I Spy. Try the Alphabet Game. Pick a topic (for instance, animals) and a letter (A), then have everyone name animals that begin with that letter, like aardvark, antelope, ape. The best thing about this game is that kids can pick a topic of interest — cars, TV characters, countries, cities, foods, names, etc. — and there are 26 possibilities (one for each letter) for every topic. Make the games into marathons, awarding special treats or trinkets to whoever wins each round. Then have lightning rounds or finals for extra-special awards. Journal Jotting Buy cheap but sturdy journals (or use plain notebooks or create your own from construction paper, hole puncher, and yarn)

and have kids write down and describe what they see along the way. Have them collect something small (a stone, a seashell, a flower, etc.) or buy a super-small trinket from rest stops (buttons, stickers, postcards, etc.) to glue into their journal, describing each stop and each location or landmark they pass. Bring along a stack of old magazines and have kids cut out and paste pictures into their journals to illustrate some of what they’ve seen (cows, fire trucks, palm trees, deer, cars, etc.). Give each kid a disposable camera to capture their own memories and keep the pictures in their personal road-trip journals. Make It Magnetic Stock up on a few super-cheap magnetic games (like tic-tac-toe, checkers, etc.) at the local dollar store or at gift shops along the way. Map Quest Bring a large map (or smaller map book that little hands can better handle) just for the kids. Have them use stickers and highlighters to mark each road you take on your journey. Silence Is Golden When all else fails, use the standby game “See Who Can Be the Quietest.” After hours of singing and crafting, your little ones just might appreciate the challenge of not saying a peep. Make prizes worth

their while, with incentives such as money (quarters, a dollar), gift-shop trinkets or games, or staying up a few minutes longer that night. Team Storytelling Ask each family member to create a line for a story (e.g.,”There once was a boy name Hugh...”), then have everyone add a line until you’re all stumped (“who lived in the town’s biggest zoo” ... “he often had nothing to do” ... “so he decided to make an igloo” ... “with a big polar bear named Sue”...). Wordplay Have kids write down various words they see as you drive along (from billboards, bumper stickers, roadside attractions and stores, license plates, signs, the sides of trucks, etc.). Ask them to write a story, poem, or song grouping all of the words they see together. Have them read, perform, or sing their creation for everyone when they’re done. A little creativity and planning can cut down on the fighting and fussing and leave fond family memories of your time together — on the road and off.
