Letter From The Publisher Greetings, Goodbye 2015 and Hello 2016! The new year is almost here! I say this every year but I don’t know where that time has gone. In just a year’s time my little man turned 3 and is getting so big and thinks he can do anything the older kids do! My daughter started 1st grade and is discovering her interests and passions in life like art. It seems like yesterday they were both little babies. I look forward to where 2016 takes me as a mom to a soon to be 4 and 7 year old! This issue will wrap up our 4th year of publishing. Heading into our 5th year, I want to thank all our readers and advertisers for your continued support. Please remember we are a free resource to you that wouldn’t be possible without the support of our local advertisers. When I do my holiday shopping, I think LOCAL first! Starting on page 10 we have compiled our 4th annual Holiday Gift Guide filled with local shopping suggestions for just about everyone on your list. Happy Holidays & Best Wishes for 2016 from the PB Parenting family!

Rocket Toys from GeoSpace The new AIR ARCHER, with its flexible, bow-like arm, dramatically increases the power of the PUMP ROCKET® launcher. You won’t believe how fast and far these foam rockets will travel. To operate, simply pull back the launcher piston, stretching the elastic bow string attached to the ends of the bow. When it’s fully drawn back, let go and…WHOOOSH!!!, the rocket goes screaming off into space. New LED-lit version, Night Shotz, lights up the night like a miniature NASA space launch! Nestled inside the soft rubber nose of each rocket is a rugged LED light, activated by an on/off switch. Launch the rocket with a simple foot stomp, and watch in awe as the rocket ascends up to 100’! Each set includes Jump Pump, Launch Pad and 3 LED Rockets with soft, safe foam nose cones. LEDs are powered by built-in nonreplaceable batteries that store enough power for hundreds of lighted flights. The whole Geospace rocket line is available on amazon.com.

The Art of Dr. Seuss Exhibition to Present at The Gardens Mall in Palm Beach Gardens. The First-of-Its-Kind Public Art Installation to Make Florida Debut. For over 60 years, Dr. Seuss’ illustrations have brought a visual realization to his fantastic and imaginary worlds. However, his artistic talent went far beyond the printed page. The Gardens Mall is honored to present, in conjunction with the venerable Ann Jackson Gallery of Atlanta, Georgia, “The Art of Dr. Seuss Collection.” This collaborative, museum-quality exhibition features compelling selections of artworks and sculptures from The Art of Dr. Seuss, works from Dr. Seuss’ best-known children’s books, and The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss, a mind-expanding collection based on decades of artwork that Dr. Seuss created at night for his own personal pleasure. Perhaps the wackiest and most wonderful elements of the collection are Dr. Seuss’ three-dimensional “Unorthodox Taxidermy” sculptures with names like The Carbonic Walrus, The Two-Horned Drouberhannis, and the Goo-Goo-Eyed Tasmanian Wolghast. This carefully curated collection also includes bronze sculptures. The Art of Dr. Seuss exhibit is open to the public, with no cost of admission.

Parents are invited to bring their children to hear one of Dr. Seuss’ beloved books read while surrounded by a colorful, Seuss-themed set designed by Broadway scenic designer Paul Tate dePoo III (created in partnership with the Maltz Jupiter Theatre).

Making the Holidays Safe Family gatherings, special traditions, delicious treats — the holiday season may be the most wonderful time of the year, especially for kids. Unfortunately, for emergency room doctors it's also one of the busiest. Learn how to protect your little ones from some common holiday dangers, so you and your family can enjoy a season that's happy and healthy. Poisoning •

Mistletoe, holly, poinsettias, Jerusalem cherry plants, and other plants are commonly used as decorations during the holidays. Like many plants, these are considered potentially poisonous and should be kept out of the reach of kids. Symptoms of plant poisoning can include rashes, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. If you suspect that your child has eaten any part of a plant, immediately call your doctor or the National Poison Center: (800) 222-1222. "Bubble lights" containing methylene chloride can be

poisonous if a child drinks the fluid from more than one light (even if labeled nontoxic). Snow sprays may be harmful if the aerosol propellants are used improperly. •

Alcohol poisoning is a common risk for children during the holiday season. Many parents host holiday parties where alcohol is served. Take care to remove all empty and partially empty cups as soon as possible. Because kids imitate adults, many may drink the beverages they see adults drinking. Children become "drunk" much more quickly than adults, so even small amounts of alcohol can be dangerous.

Food poisoning is another potential holiday hazard. Practice food safety by washing hands, utensils, dishes, and anything else that comes in contact with raw meat, including poultry and fish, and raw eggs before and after use. Don't contaminate a serving dish with raw meat. Store leftovers properly and heat them thoroughly before serving.

Kids’ Tickets Start at $10! Ages 2-12. Limit of four (4) kids’ tickets with purchase of a full-price adult ticket. Restrictions, exclusions and additional charges may apply. Subject to availability.

Choking and Swallowing •

Tree ornaments, light bulbs, icicles, tinsel, and small toys are potential choking hazards for small children because they may block the airway. The general rule of thumb is that if it's small enough to fit in the mouths of babies and toddlers, it's too small to play with.

Common holiday foods such as peanuts or popcorn are potential choking hazards and should not be given to children under age 4.

The needles of holiday trees can cause painful cuts in the mouth and throat of a child who swallows them.

Angel hair (made from finely spun glass) and ornament hangers may cause cuts, skin irritation, or eye damage if touched or swallowed by children.

decorations when decking your halls. •

Circuits that are overloaded with lights, decorations, and accessories can start a fire. Don't overload indoor or outdoor electrical outlets.

Have your fireplace inspected before you light your first fire of the season. A chimney professional can clean your fireplace and ensure that it is safe to use. You can protect your family by using a sturdy fireplace screen when burning fires. Never burn paper or pine boughs, since those materials can float out of the chimney and ignite a nearby home or your own roof.

Practice fire safety, have a family emergency plan in the event of a fire, and check smoke detectors before you put up your holiday decorations. These steps will ensure that your family can celebrate many holiday seasons to come.

Fire •

Keep your tree secured in a sturdy stand so that it doesn't tip over (or isn't knocked over by kids or pets) and keep it away from all heat sources, such as electrical outlets, radiators, and portable space heaters. If you buy an artificial tree, be sure it's labeled "fire-retardant." Unplug all lights, both indoor and outdoor, and extinguish all candles every night before you go to bed. Avoid using real candles on a tree because if the needles are dry, they can easily catch fire. Never leave the room with taper candles or menorah candles burning — it only takes a minute for a spark from a candle to burst into flames. Keep lit candles away from windowsills and mantles and use only flame-retardant

Accidents A lot of cooking goes on during the holiday season, so there are many opportunities for burns and scaldings. •

Keep pot handles turned away from the front of the stove and always keep the oven door closed. To prevent accidents, watch your kids while you bake or cook. Kitchen appliances should be clean to prevent potential fires.

Keep breakable ornaments out of young kids' reach — or keep them off the tree until your children are older. If one does break, clean up the pieces quickly.

Car accidents and injuries to children increase during the holiday season.

Prevent a holiday ER visit by making sure that kids are buckled up securely during car rides and don't drive after drinking alcohol. And be extra cautious when traveling at night on holidays such as Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, when there is a higher incidence of impaired driving This information was provided by KidsHealth®, one of the largest resources online for medically reviewed health information written for parents, kids, and teens. Prepping the Perfect Ham A baked ham is the perfect centerpiece to any holiday celebration. Follow these tips to ensure your seasonal meal's main course is a sensation with your guests: •

• •

Never thaw meat on the kitchen counter as the external temperature can rise above 40 F while the inside remains frozen. Thaw in either the refrigerator or in cold water. Plan ahead to clean up; line your pan with aluminum foil. To avoid dried out ham, cook at 325F

allowing 20-30 minutes per pound. Place fat side up. The melting fat will baste your ham. Turn over halfway through baking to avoid uneven salting. Do not use sharp utensils when turning the ham. Valuable juices may escape if the ham is pierced. Use proper cooking times and temperatures. Cooking to at least 145F will result in juicy, tender meat. Let ham stand for 15 minutes after roasting before slicing. Completely cook ham until done. Avoid partial cooking and storing in refrigerator for later use, which can contaminate the meat.

8 Tools for Restaurant Survival BY SARA MARCHESSAULT

Going out to eat with young kids can be a downright fiasco. If your kids tend to lean toward the not-so-desirable side of appropriate restaurant behavior, then between the bread and the salad you may have opened sugar packets, had someone running laps around the table, and perhaps even had a kid smacking the nearest fish tank or playing with the décor. The idea of taking the kids out to eat is a nice one. Who doesn’t want a night where they don’t have to cook or clean and can just sit and be with the family? Besides, don’t we need to expose our kids to social situations so they can learn how to behave? Yes and yes. But, sometimes even our bestintended decisions as parents can backfire into an experience that is more stress than it’s worth. How can we make taking our kids out to eat more enjoyable? Is it possible to have an entire meal at a restaurant with young kids without screaming, running away, or throwing Cheerios over the booth into a strangers lap? Absolutely. Practice at home. It’s hard for children to understand they have to stay seated in a restaurant when they are permitted to get down from the table and run

30 December 2015 | PB Parenting |

around at home. Try implementing a few rules around dinnertime in your house. Two simple rules to get started could be stay seated in your chair during dinner and say “may I please be excused” when you’re ready to get down. Implementing the same rules at home that you expect when out of the house will set the tone so your kids won’t be shocked when they are expected to behave differently at a restaurant. Choose kid-friendly restaurants to practice. These are places where there is so much background noise that it doesn’t really matter if your kid is loud. Often these are grills or pizza places with TV’s and a relatively busy scene. If you don’t want your kids to watch television you can always position them to not see the screen or distract them with an activity. Bring cool activities. Most restaurants will have menus and crayons for the kids. This usually keeps them occupied for just enough time to order drinks and decide on dinner. The younger they are, the shorter the attention span. This is where a well-planned bag of activities is your treasure chest of success. Include one or two items your kids love. Maybe markers instead of crayons and a special notebook. Or special treats you only get when you are out to eat, like a sticker book, a new

book of Mad Libs, or even a favorite to read. If you’re a little more daring, bring scissors and paper to keep them still and in their seats (just be prepared to pick up scraps of paper). Screen time. For many families this is the emergency back-up plan if a meal out is going particularly sour. Netflix on a smartphone or playing a game on a tablet can be an extra special treat – or it can serve as the ultimate bargaining chip as in, “you need to sit and behave right now and if you do I will let you have the tablet.” Not always desirable, but it works in an emergency. Bring snacks. Food can take awhile to come from a restaurant kitchen and if it’s already your kid’s normal dinnertime, hunger can make them even crankier than they might normally be. Having a snack handy can prevent a tantrum or overly emotional outburst.

Ask to be moved if your table will not work. You are taking your family out to dinner and spending money in this establishment. If you’re not happy with your table, you may ask to be moved. If you’re seated at a table where your kid will be tempted to throw food out a window or a spot where its easy for him or her to run away, you can request to be relocated. Let your kids make choices. Read the menu with your kids and talk about what they will order and eat for dinner. Let them have some ownership of the experience and learn that one of the fun things about going out to eat is that everyone can order whatever they want from the menu. If your kids can read, have him or her read the menu for you.

Use what’s in front of you to reinforce lessons. Talk about the way the table is set. Where is the fork and knife? What are they used for? If there are cloth napkins, discuss with your kids why a place would use cloth instead of paper. Talk about putting your napkin in your lap and discuss that if you want it to stay there, you have to sit still. What else can you think of for making the restaurant experience a fun one for your kids? This will likely take some practice, but once your kids are able to sit at the table and behave, you will get to enjoy the fruits of your labor and going out to eat will be the pleasant experience you crave. One where you don’t have to cook or clean and you can enjoy an evening of being together with your family. Sara Marchessault is a writer, life coach, and lifelong diarist. 7 Ways to Explore Your Town Like a Tourist BY LISA A. BEACH

Are you in a “fun rut”? You know the signs: your weekends start to all look the same, your date nights stay within a two-mile radius of your house and you’ve got a “been there, done that” attitude about things to do in your community. The upcoming winter break is the perfect time to explore your own backyard! Maybe it’s time to start thinking like a tourist. When you go on vacation, you probably research the area to discover local activities, restaurants, special events, cultural happenings, must-see places to visit and fun-but-affordable things to do. In other words, you think like a tourist. Why not apply the same “tourist strategy” to your hometown? You’ll uncover new restaurants, community festivals, concerts, cultural events and more to keep your family busy for months.

“Start thinking like a tourist to explore your hometown from a fresh perspective.” 34 December 2015 | PB Parenting |

Jump-start your fun with these ideas: 1. Unusual Tourist Attractions. If you’ve already visited most of the popular tourist attractions in your own community, you don’t necessarily need to leave town to see something new. Check out http:// www.roadsideamerica.com/ or http:// roadsidetourist.com/ for quirky roadside attractions and off-the-beaten path tourist sites that might be your community’s bestkept secret for a fun family outing. 2. Farmer’s Market. What better way to taste what’s in season than to visit your local farmer’s market. Depending on the market, you can watch food prep/ cooking demonstrations, sit in on nutrition seminars, visit a barnyard animal petting area, take a market or farm tour, gather ingredients to cook a healthy meal at home, pick up a jar of local honey or freshly canned preserves, and support your local farmers and small businesses in the process. To find a farmer’s market in your area, visit http://www.localharvest. org/farmers-markets/. 3. Colleges and Universities. You don’t need to wait until your kids are college-bound to take advantage of all

the happenings on your local college campus. Of course, cheering on your local college football team might already be on your radar. But you might also want to check out many of the other college events open to the community, such as plays, A cappella performances, concerts, art exhibits, gardening workshops, guest lectures, planetarium shows, fitness challenges, book fairs, improv comedy shows and more. For details about college events open to the public, contact your local community college as well as public and private state colleges and universities in your area. 4. County Extension Office. According to the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture website, local extension offices bring vital, practical information to consumers, families and young people. Offerings reflect the community’s needs, such as budget-friendly meal planning and food preparation classes, butterfly gardening, county fairs, rain barrel and composting workshops, 4-H Clubs, and eco-friendly landscaping classes taught by master gardeners. Contact your county extension office or search here to find yours: http://www. extension.org/. 5. Public Library. Think beyond summer reading programs and toddler story times (although those are both great options if you have younger kids). Did you know that many libraries offer book clubs, computer classes, small business workshops, teen clubs and special events such as health seminars, book signings, puppet shows, speaker presentations and arts-and-crafts classes? Public libraries offer most, if not all, of these events for free or very low cost to the community. To find your local public library, as well as academic, national, school and specialty libraries,
